Abstract (sommario):

We investigated foodways at Real Alto, an early Formative (4400–1800 BC) Valdivia site in coastal Ecuador, using starch and phytoliths recovered from 50 stone tools from three residential and two ceremonial structures, as well as 46 human dental calculus samples, to explore how food reflects the social relationships and economy of the community. Maize was important in daily meals and ceremonial foods by the Middle Valdivia (2800–2400 BC), but it was only one component of an agricultural system that included yuca, arrowroot, llerén, canna, yam, jackbean, squash, gourd, chili, and cotton. Ceremonial and everyday foods at Real Alto did not differ: actions surrounding food were both domestic and ceremonial, depending on context. Households had equal access to annual crops and to root-tubers with longer growing seasons. Gelatinized starch was commonly recovered on tools, indicating the processing of cooked foods. Dental calculus residues confirmed common consumption of cooked foods, fruits, and root-tubers. Cultivating crops with different water and growing season requirements necessitated diverse practices, potentially including selection of short-season varieties, hand watering, and growing crops over multiple rainy seasons. The latter two practices required increased labor inputs: access to labor was likely a key element supporting the nascent social hierarchy that emerged by the Middle Valdivia.

Abstract (sommario):

We report a new locality record for the Mehuín Green Frog, Insuetophrynus acarpicus Barrio, 1970, a Critically Endangered species from southern Chile. The new locality is about 90 km southeast of the type locality and expands the known geographical distribution 40 km to the southeast. The new record confirms the presence of I. acarpicus south of the Lingue and Valdivia rivers. Our documentation demonstrates a discontinuous distribution of this frog in the Valdivian Coastal Range of Chile and intensifies the need to implement effective strategies for its conservation.

Abstract (sommario):

Two new endemic species of Anaulacodesmus Attems, 1898, a genus of millipede native to Chile, are described. Anaulacodesmus panterae sp. nov. and Anaulacodesmus picassovallebuonai sp. nov. were discovered in fragments of Valdivian temperate forest in southern Chile. These species can be separated from the rest of the congeners based on their larger size and gonopodal characters. A. panterae from Valdivia (Los Ríos Region), has distally swollen gonopods, a trait it shares with A. dahli Chamberlin, 1957 and a A. enkrates (Attems, 1898). Anaulacodesmus picassovallebuonai sp. nov., from Temuco and Lake Villarrica (La Araucanía Region), is morphologically similar to A. bifidus Golovatch, 2014 with which it shares the bifid structure of the telopodite. Detailed descriptions and character illustrations are provided for both species.

Se describe un nuevo género y una nueva especie de Spilopyrinae de Chile, propia del bosque templado valdiviano en la costa de las provincias de Valdivia y de Chiloé. Dorymolpus n. gen. se distingue por presentar proceso mesosternal proyectado sobre el prosterno como una espina corta y roma, cavidades coxales anteriores abiertas y uñas simples; incluye sólo a Dorymolpus elizabethae n. sp., especie de la que también se describe su larva, la que se ha encontrado asociada al follaje de Nothofagus dombeyi (Mirb.) Oerst. Se comenta sobre las subfamilias Eumolpinae y Spilopyrinae.

Abstract (sommario):

The objective of this research was to determine the occurrence of anisakid nematode larvae in hake ceviche sold in restaurants in Valdivia (39°48′S, 73°14′W) and Niebla (39°49′S, 73°22′W), Chile. Between August and November 2012, 78 portions of ceviche were collected (6 from each of the 13 restaurants that sell this product). Each portion was weighed and divided into approximately 30-g samples, which were placed in petri dishes with 0.15 M NaCl. All samples were manually shredded and then examined with a stereomicroscope. Muscles of 41 southern hake (Merluccius australis), a fish sold fresh in Valdivia, also were examined by candling to determine the presence of anisakid larvae. The presence of Pseudoterranova larvae in ceviche sold in Chile was identified for the first time. The pH of ceviche ranges from 4.1 to 4.8, which favors the presence of viable anisakid larvae that tolerate the acid pH similar to that found in the stomach of their mammalian host. No significant differences (P > 0.05) in the prevalence, mean abundance, and mean density of anisakid larvae in ceviche were found between localities. Larvae were detected in ceviche from 3 of 6 restaurants in Valdivia and 4 of 7 restaurants in Niebla. Of the 78 examined portions of ceviche, 21.8% had larvae. The prevalence of viable larvae was 16.7 and 7.1% in the examined portions from Valdivia and Niebla, respectively. In the 41 hake muscle samples from Valdivia, the prevalence (4.9%), mean abundance (0.1), and mean density (0.03) was the same for Pseudoterranova and Anisakis larvae. No inspection processes or pretreatments are currently in place for raw fish to achieve safe conditions for ceviche in restaurants from Valdivia and Niebla.

Abstract (sommario):

Gurltia paralysans and Aelurostrongylus abstrusus are neglected metastrongyloid nematode species which infect domestic and wild cats in South American countries and in Chile, but no epidemiological studies on concomitant infections have been conducted in Chile so far. The aim of this study was not only to evaluate the occurrence of concomitant infections, but also to identify epidemiological risk factors associated with of G. paralysans and A. abstrusus infections in urban domestic cats (Felis catus) from Southern Chile. Blood samples from clinically healthy domestic cats from three cities of Southern Chile—Temuco, Valdivia, and Puerto Montt—were analyzed by an experimental semi-nested PCR protocol. A total of 171 apparently healthy domestic cats in Temuco (n = 68), Valdivia (n = 50), and Puerto Montt (n = 53) were sampled and analyzed. A total of 93 domestic cats (54.4%) were positive for G. paralysans, and 34 (19.9%) were positive for A. abstrusus infections. From those animals, 34 (19.9%) were co-infected. Cats positive with G. paralysans were found in all three cities; 47.2% in Puerto Montt, 48% in Valdivia, and 64.7% in Temuco. Levels of infection for A. abstrusus in the population under study were 4% (Valdivia), 10% (Puerto Montt), and 32.4% (Temuco). The present large-scale epidemiological study confirmed the presence of these neglected nematodes in domestic cat populations in Southern Chile, and described the possible risk factors associated with feline gurltiosis and aelurostrongylosis.

Cette thèse explore le rapport entre les conflits environnementaux et la question de la citoyenneté, à différentes échelles et temporalités. Depuis une approche anthropologique, cette thèse a pour objet la saisie empirique des processus de citoyenneté à l’œuvre dans deux cas de conflits environnementaux qui se déroulent dans la ville de Valdivia et dans le village côtier de Mehuín, au sud du Chili, à cause de la construction et mise en fonctionnement d’une usine de cellulose. En reprenant l’historicité des conflits ainsi que les ruptures qu'ils ont traversées, cette thèse s'attache à analyser la manière dont différentes formes de citoyenneté se sont fabriquées, évoluent et se transforment lors des conflits.Dans cette recherche, les constructions de citoyenneté se jouent au moins en trois domaines d'analyse, lesquels rendent compte en même temps des différents niveaux, lieux et moments des conflits où elles prennent forme. Tout d’abord, l’analyse attire l'attention sur les constructions de citoyenneté qui se donnent à voir lors de la discussion publique qui s'ouvre à l'occasion des conflits. Ce faisant, l'analyse va porter une attention particulière aux registres de citoyenneté ou « registres de légitimité » (Fourniau, 1996 ; Carrel, 2007) mobilisés par les acteurs engagés pour à la fois renforcer leur position dans le conflit et entreprendre la défense des sites. En deuxième lieu, cette recherche s'attache à analyser les constructions de citoyenneté identifiées dans le domaine des formes d'action et d'organisation mises en place par les collectifs dans le cadre de la contestation. Le troisième et dernier domaine d'analyse des citoyennetés qui se donnent à voir au cours des conflits, est celui de l'engagement collectif. L'enquête pose ici la question des « trajectoires d’engagement » (Bertheleu et Neveu, 2005 ; Douat et al. 2012), c’est-à-dire, de savoir comment l'engagement collectif se construit et évolue au cours des conflits.Cette thèse essaie ainsi d'apporter à la compréhension de la fabrique de la citoyenneté, ou des « citoyennetés mouvantes », ainsi que du rôle que jouent les conflits environnementaux dans la construction democratique au Chili
This thesis explores the relationship between environmental conflicts and the issue of citizenship, at different scales and temporalities. From an anthropological approach, this thesis aims at the empirical capture of citizenship processes in action in two cases of environmental conflicts that take place in the city of Valdivia and in the coastal town of Mehuín, in southern Chile, due to the construction and commissioning of a cellulose factory. By taking up the historicity of conflicts, as well as the ruptures they have gone through, this thesis focuses on analyzing the way in which different forms of citizenship have been made, evolved and transformed during the conflicts.In this research, the constructions of citizenship are played out in at least three areas of analysis, which at the same time account for the different levels, places and moments of the conflicts in which they take shape. In this way, the analysis will pay special attention to the citizenship registers or “legitimacy registers” (Fourniau, 1996; Carrel, 2007) mobilized by the actors involved to strengthen their position in the conflict and undertake the defense of the sites. Second, this research focuses on analyzing the constructions of citizenship identified in the field of the forms of action and organization established by the collectives in the context of the protest. The third and final area of analysis of citizenships that emerge during conflicts is that of collective engagement. The research raises here the question of “engagement trajectories” (Bertheleu and Neveu, 2005; Douat et al. 2012), that is, to now how collective engagement is built and evolves during the conflicts. This thesis thus seeks to contribute to the understanding of the fabric of citizenship, or of “moving citizenships”, as well as the role played by environmental conflicts in the democratic construction in Chile

Tesis para optar al título de Magíster en Gestión para la Globalización
The Nature Conservancy (TNC), una Organización No Gubernamental (ONG) internacional, basada en Estados Unidos y centrada en la conservación de la naturaleza, es dueña de un predio ubicado en la comuna chilena de Corral. Su rol es el de proteger el paño de selva valdiviana que posee y atraer visitantes y recursos a esta reserva costera. Por diversos factores lo anterior es una difícil tarea, principalmente dado que TNC está dedicada a la conservación y no a la hotelería. El desafío propuesto es generar un Modelo de negocios para la atracción de turistas e Inversionistas a la Reserva Costera Valdiviana (RCV) centrado tanto en mejoras a la RCV en su conjunto, como también la propuesta de la generación de una propuesta hotelera. La metodología empleada, consiste en la revisión de información primaria de tipo cualitativo de la RCV y su entorno, con el fin de determinar sus principales intereses y forma de trabajo, así como una proyección, características de la industria turística y la factibilidad de efectuar un proyecto como el planteado dadas las condiciones existentes. Con tal información, se estructuró el modelo a través de la metodología denominada Business Model Canvas. El producto principal obtenido es un modelo de negocios básico para TNC y su RCV, el cual está planteado de forma tal que integra los objetivos de esta ONG con una propuesta de tipo infraestructura hotelera. Este documento analiza además algunos puntos críticos para la implementación del modelo y determina algunas brechas para conseguir buenos resultados. Junto a lo anterior este modelo considera también la definición del visitante-cliente objetivo, servicios mínimos a incluir en la iniciativa, programa arquitectónico mínimo, costos estimados basados en experiencias parecidas y análisis del entorno cercano al proyecto: población, gobierno local y servicios. Finalmente se concluye que un proyecto como el planteado es viable técnica y económicamente: incrementará las visitas de la RCV; mejorará la asociatividad de TNC con los diversos actores presentes en el ámbito turístico, empresarial, gubernamental y conservacionista; generará un polo de desarrollo económico local tanto propio como de servicios complementarios; aumentará la oferta hotelera en la región; y finalmente establecerá a la RCV como un destino turístico consolidado tanto a nivel nacional como internacional.

Abstract (sommario):

Actualmente existe en la región una tendencia hacía la ocupación hacía de zonas antes no consideradas, y entre ellas, humedales, sectores del sistema estuario, áreas de alto grado ecológico, etc. De esta forma, la expansión urbana y la demanda inmobiliaria ha obligado a replantear la perspectiva de la ciudad, buscando en estas zonas la solución a sus necesidades e intereses, generando conflictos entre grupos sociales, ecologistas, autoridades de gobierno e inversionistas privados. Mientras unos apuntan a la conservación, otros plantean su ocupación. La incorrecta intervención de estas áreas ha derivado en la perdida de grandes ecosistemas, la destrucción de flora y fauna, la contaminación de acuíferos y la generación de problemas colaterales como inundaciones a causa del relleno de humedales. Esta problemática incluye el campo de la Planificación Urbana y de la arquitectura, considerando que en la Región de los Ríos y especialmente en la provincia de Valdivia, capital regional, existen numerosas y extensas zonas húmedas compuestas por sistemas de humedales y el sitio RAMSAR colindante con el fundo Cau Cau, grupos y sistemas de acuíferos de una complejidad y vulnerabilidad hidrogeológica alta que constituyen un valioso patrimonio ambiental y un complejo sistema hidrológico que no pueden ser ignorados a la hora de generar proyectos.

Abstract The uncertain situation in which I found myself absolutely had to be resolved as soon as possible, because the attitude of the squatters on public lands was making it questionable whether Valdivia would be come the first immigrant settlement in Chile. I therefore set off for the interior without further delay, leaving the newly arrived immigrants lodged in the vaults of the old Corral castle, after having allotted to some of them the wretched lands of Cutipai and a few isolated stretches of the banks of the Valdivia River, banks that were so useless no one laid claim to them and that I took care to award free of charge, so that the recipients might more cheerfully await the appearance of those lands that they had been told were awaiting them.

Esta presentación fue generada teniendo como tema central el Afiche que anuncia el Congreso, las especies animales y vegetales que en este aparecen, sus nombres científicos y los autores que las describieron, o que primero hablaron de ellas en términos científicos. El otro eje organizador es el de la historia de Valdivia, y su emplazamiento. Hemos agregado un elemento que no estaba presente en el Afiche del Congreso, simbolizando así el conocimiento científico de una planta endémica de esta tierra, recolectada por Claudio Gay y descrita como Valdivia gayana por Rémy 1847. Amalgama perfecta del lugar de origen de la planta, en el género Valdivia, homenaje al recolector, en el epíteto específico gayana, y del conocimiento científico sin fronteras, el botánico francés Rémy, que la describió en el año que se indica. Los mapas de los lugares de avistamiento reciente(*) de Valdivia gayana y de Alsodes norae, ilustran el endemismo y el estrecho rango de distribución geográfica de muchas de la especies de la selva lluviosa Valdiviana, y, son una invitación a conocer y a trabajar por la preservación de este patrimonio natural único e irrepetible

This paper is a summary of cross-American experiences while researching and implementing a considerable energy reduction grant in three Latin American municipalities: Valdivia, Chile; Goiania, Brazil, and Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago. The project involves over 400 buildings in three different bioclimatic zones. The grant’s purpose is to demonstrate how no-cost or low-cost strategies could be deployed as efficient examples of energy savings and greenhouse gas reduction in municipal buildings. The program, conducted through pilot projects, has been designed to influence many other cities in the participating countries and beyond.
