Abstract. Introduction: The most common complication following transcutaneous osseointegration for amputees is infection. Although an obvious source of contamination is the permanent stoma, operative site contamination at the time of implantation may be an additional source. This study investigates the impact of unexpected positive intraoperative cultures (UPIC) on postoperative infection. Methods: Charts were reviewed for 8 patients with UPIC and 22 patients with negative intraoperative cultures (NIC) who had at least 1 year of post-osseointegration follow-up. All patients had 24 h of routine postoperative antibiotic prophylaxis, with UPIC receiving additional antibiotics guided by culture results. The main outcome measure was postoperative infection intervention, which was graded as (0) none, (1) antibiotics unrelated to the initial surgery, (2) operative debridement with implant retention, or (3) implant removal. Results: The UPIC vs. NIC rate of infection management was as follows: Grade 0, 6/8 = 75 % vs. 14/22 = 64 %, p = 0.682; Grade 1, 2/8 = 25 % vs. 8/22 = 36.4 % (Fisher's p = 0.682); Grade 2, 1/8 = 12.5 % vs. 0/22 = 0 % (Fisher's p = 0.267); Grade 3, 0/8 = 0 % vs. 1/22 = 4.5 % (Fisher's p = 1.000). No differences were statistically significant. Conclusions: UPIC at index osseointegration, managed with directed postoperative antibiotics, does not appear to increase the risk of additional infection management. The therapeutic benefit of providing additional directed antibiotics versus no additional antibiotics following UPIC is unknown and did not appear to increase the risk of other adverse outcomes in our cohort.

Abstract (sommario):
The conceptual basis of the UPIC system is described and discussed, in particular its relation to the work of its orginator, Iannis Xenakis, to the science of acoustics and to the development of an intuitive graphic imagery. A possible pedagogical approac h to musical creation using the resources of the UPIC is developed, and the particular pedagogical ethos of the system is emphasised. There follows a detailed description of the practical arrangements for a number of different workshop situations using the UPIC system in which the author has participated, and an evaluation of the outcomes of using the system in this way.

AimsThe aim of this study was to assess the incidence the microbiological spectrum and clinical outcome of hip and knee revision arthroplasties with unexpected-positive-intraoperative-cultures (UPIC) at a single center with minimum follow up of 2 years.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed our prospectively maintained institutional arthroplasty registry. Between 2011 and 2020 we performed presumably aseptic rTHA (n=939) and rTKA (n= 1,058). Clinical outcome, re-revision rates and causes as well as the microbiological spectrum were evaluated.ResultsIn total, 219/939 (23.3%) rTHA and 114/ 1,058 (10.8%) rTKA had a UPIC (p<0.001). Single positive intraoperative cultures were found in 173/219 (78.9%) in rTHA and 99/114 (86.8%) in rTKA, whereas 46/219 (21.0%) rTHA and 15/114 (13.2%) rTKA had positive results in ≥2 intraoperative cultures. A total of 390 microorganisms were found among the 333 cases. Staphylococcus epidermidis 30.9%, CoNS (21.9%), Cutibacterium acnes 21.1%, and Bacillus spp. 7.3% were the most common microorganisms. Overall, detected microorganisms showed high sensitivity to daptomycin (96.6%), vancomycin (97.3%) and linezolid (98.0%).After a minimum follow up of 2 years (rTHA 1,470 (735; 3,738) days; rTKA 1,474 (749; 4,055) days). During the 2-year follow-up, 8 patients died and 5 were lost to follow-up. There were 54/219 (24.7%) re-revision in rTHa and 20/114 (17.5%) in rTKA. Overall, there were 23 (10.5%) septic re-rTHA and 9 (7.9%) septic re-rTKA as well as 31 (14.2%) aseptic re-rTHA and 11 (9.6%) aseptic re-rTKA.Patients with previous septic revisions bevor UPIC procedure showed a significant higher risk for septic re-revision (p<0.05). Moreover, there were less septic re-revisions after single culture positive UPIC (rTHA: 16/173 (9.2%); rTKA 6/99 (6.1%)) compared to ≥2 positive intraoperative cultures UPIC (rTHA: 7/46 (15.2%); rTKA 3/15 (20.0%)).The most common reason for re-revision in the rTHA-group was aseptic loosening of the cup (34.2%) or of the stem (23.3%), dislocation (18.3%) and periprosthetic-fractures (7.8%). In the rTKA-group it was aseptic loosening (40.4%), instability (24.6%) and secondary patella resurfacing (7.9%). There was a higher septic re-revision rate in consecutive revisions than in planned revisions 17.3% vs. 8.5% in the rTHA-group and 14.3% vs. 7.5% in the rTKA-group, p<0.001.ConclusionUPICs are common in rTJA. The rate was higher in hips which may partly explained by the easier pre op joint aspiration in the knee. UPIC may lead to an increase in subsequent re-revisions.

Originally designed by Xenakis to free him from traditional music notation while allowing a faithful execution of his musical thought, UPIC (Unité Polyagogique Informatique du CEMAMu) was quickly diverted from its original functions. Even if Xenakis recommended to apprentice composers who came to study with him ‘listen to a lot of music and write’ (Serrou 2003: 20), this machine, since its inception, has enabled a large number of people to access music composition, because it does not require any preliminary theoretical training. Based on this observation we ask how UPIC, capable of converting a drawing into sound in real-time, upset the perception of musical pedagogy not only in Europe but also worldwide, through the many workshops/concerts offered to a wide audience. Exchanges and emulation around this invention are discussed as well.After describing the technical development of this tool and, by extension, Xenakis's pedagogical thinking, we will highlight some of the most significant encounters between the machine and the public thanks to many unpublished sources found in the archives of the Centre Iannis Xenakis (CIX) recently deposited at the University of Rouen. We will highlight the pedagogical correlation between sound theory, gesture and image involved in the composition of a UPIC score. We will also approach other software applications that combine drawing and sound.

Student-athletes are burdened with demands, expectations, and stressors that pose challenges to their personal development, rendering many student-athletes ill-prepared for career choices outside the sports milieu. Internships are vital to the skill development for all students. Clemson’s University Professional Internship and Co-op Program (UPIC) offers on-campus internship opportunities for qualifying students. Informed by student involvement theory (Astin, 1984), the purpose of this case study was to examine Clemson student-athlete’s perceptions of participating in the UPIC program. Although the student-athletes experienced challenges during their internships, the data revealed that the internship was instrumental in the professional development of the participants, specifically in the areas of communication, collaboration, and work ethic. Overall, 88.89% of student-athletes felt their internship was very relevant to their career goals. This case study provides an example of cross-campus collaborative programming that assisted in the career development of student-athletes and should be implemented at other colleges and universities.

Abstract (sommario):
With the invention of UPIC by Iannis Xenakis in 1977, for the first time one could achieve the sonic realisation of drawn musical ideas by a computer. Since then, no one seems to have proposed an equivalent tool, providing usability for both beginners and professionals. We will discuss how lively the UPIC idea can still be today, and why we should pay attention to this approach. Indeed, there has been a relative quietness in the domain of computer music specifically regarding how we arrange graphical curves to describe the evolution of sound parameters and create a musical form. This ascertainment led to the birth of our project UPISketch, which aims at the same goal, using today’s technology. We hope that this first version can reintroduce the concept of a ‘computer-assisted tool for sound composition, assisted by drawing’ to a global audience. The program being available since June 2018, we will evaluate the results of the first workshops with various publics and take a glimpse at the next developments.

The Editors are delighted to welcome this contribution from a venerable pioneer of algorithmic composition who is also a member of Organised Sound’s Advisory Board. In this article, edited from notes for a series of lectures delivered in Poland, and not previously published, Xenakis tackles first the questions arising from determinacy and indeterminacy, repetition and variation, symmetry and structure, and multidimensional musical space. He later describes his computer drawing interface, UPIC, and ends with a discussion of some of his statistical compositional methods employing a variety of probability distributions. Much of the article is illuminated by insights drawn from a lifetime’s work in the arts and sciences.

The apical surfaces of urothelial cells are almost entirely covered with plaques consisting of crystalline, hexagonal arrays of 16nm uroplakin particles. Although all four uroplakins, when SDS-denatured, can be digested by chymotrypsin, most uroplakin domains in native urothelial plaques are resistant to the enzyme, suggesting a tightly packed structure. The only exception is the C-terminal, cytoplasmic tail of UPIII (UPIII) which is highly susceptible to proteolysis, suggesting a loose configuration. When uroplakins are solubilized with 2% octylglucoside and fractionated with ion exchangers, UPIa and UPII were bound as a complex by a cation exchanger, whereas UPIb and UPIII were bound by an anion exchanger. This result is consistent with the fact that UPIa and UPIb are cross-linked to UPII and UPIII, respectively, and suggests that the four uroplakins form two pairs consisting of UPIa/II and UPIb/III. Immunogold labelling using a new mouse monoclonal antibody, AU1, revealed that UPIII is present in all urothelial plaques, indicating that the two uroplakin pairs are not segregated into two different types of urothelial plaque and that all plaques must have a similar uroplakin composition. Taken together, these results indicate that uroplakins form a tightly packed structure, that the four uroplakins interact specifically forming two pairs, and that both uroplakin pairs are required for normal urothelial plaque formation.

The apical surface of mouse urothelium is covered by two-dimensional crystals (plaques) of uroplakin (UP) particles. To study uroplakin function, we ablated the mouse UPII gene. A comparison of the phenotypes of UPII- and UPIII-deficient mice yielded new insights into the mechanism of plaque formation and some fundamental features of urothelial differentiation. Although UPIII knockout yielded small plaques, UPII knockout abolished plaque formation, indicating that both uroplakin heterodimers (UPIa/II and UPIb/III or IIIb) are required for plaque assembly. Both knockouts had elevated UPIb gene expression, suggesting that this is a general response to defective plaque assembly. Both knockouts also had small superficial cells, suggesting that continued fusion of uroplakin-delivering vesicles with the apical surface may contribute to umbrella cell enlargement. Both knockouts experienced vesicoureteral reflux, hydronephrosis, renal dysfunction, and, in the offspring of some breeding pairs, renal failure and neonatal death. These results highlight the functional importance of uroplakins and establish uroplakin defects as a possible cause of major urinary tract anomalies and death.

The apical surface of mammalian urothelium is covered by 16-nm protein particles packed hexagonally to form 2D crystals of asymmetric unit membranes (AUM) that contribute to the remarkable permeability barrier function of the urinary bladder. We have shown previously that bovine AUMs contain four major integral membrane proteins, i.e., uroplakins Ia, Ib, II, and IIIa, and that UPIa and Ib (both tetraspanins) form heterodimers with UPII and IIIa, respectively. Using a panel of antibodies recognizing different conformational states of uroplakins, we demonstrate that the UPIa-dependent, furin-mediated cleavage of the prosequence of UPII leads to global conformational changes in mature UPII and that UPIb also induces conformational changes in its partner UPIIIa. We further demonstrate that tetraspanins CD9, CD81, and CD82 can stabilize their partner protein CD4. These results indicate that tetraspanin uroplakins, and some other tetraspanin proteins, can induce conformational changes leading to the ER-exit, stabilization, and cell surface expression of their associated, single-transmembrane-domained partner proteins and thus can function as “maturation-facilitators.” We propose a model of AUM assembly in which conformational changes in integral membrane proteins induced by uroplakin interactions, differentiation-dependent glycosylation, and the removal of the prosequence of UPII play roles in regulating the assembly of uroplakins to form AUM.

In the case of music, various attempts have been made from time to time to translate non-visual ideas into visual codes (see Walters 1997 for a collection of graphic scores from the late computer music pioneer Iannis Xenakis, John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and others). In computer music research, most current sound design tools allow the direct manipulation of visual representations of sound such as time-domain and frequency-domain representations, with the most notable examples being the UPIC system (Xenakis 1992), Phonogramme (Lesbros 1996), Lemur (Fitz and Haken 1997), and MetaSynth (Wenger 1998), among others. Associations between auditory and visual dimensions have also been extensively studied in other scientific domains such as visual perception and cognitive psychology, as well as inspired new forms of artistic expression (see, for example, Wells 1980; Goldberg and Schrack 1986; Whitney 1991).

Abstract Planets in young star clusters could shed light on planet formation and evolution since star clusters can provide accurate age estimation. However, the number of transiting planets detected in clusters was only ∼30, too small for statistical analysis. Thanks to the unprecedented high-precision astrometric data provided by Gaia DR2 and Gaia DR3, many new open clusters (OCs) and comoving groups have been identified. The Understanding Planetary Formation and Evolution in Star Clusters project aims to find observational evidence and interpret how planets form and evolve in cluster environments. In this work, we cross match the stellar catalogs of new OCs and comoving groups with confirmed planets and candidates. We carefully remove false positives and obtain the biggest catalog of planets in star clusters up to now, which consists of 73 confirmed planets and 84 planet candidates. After age validation, we obtain the radius–age diagram of these planets/candidates. We find an increment in the fraction of hot Jupiters (HJs) around 100 Myr and attribute the increment to the flyby-induced high-e migration in star clusters. An additional small bump of the fraction of HJs after 1 Gyr is detected, which indicates the formation timescale of HJ around field stars is much larger than that in star clusters. Thus, stellar environments play important roles in the formation of HJs. The hot Neptune desert occurs around 100 Myr in our sample. A combination of photoevaporation and high-e migration may sculpt the hot Neptune desert in clusters.

The article regards two versions of the work "The Starry Wind of Cassiopeia" by composer Viktor Ulyanich. The first is an eponymous composition, written in 1990 on a UPIC musical computer in the Paris studio of Iannis Xenakis, the second is an audiovisual work "Cassiopeia", which was the result of creative collaboration between Viktor Ulyanich and the artist Olga Kumeger. Compositions are presented as fundamentally synesthetic phenomena, since in both cases the graphical and musical components are inextricably linked. In the first case, timbres are synthesized through the lines; in the second, they participate in the formation of a new artistic unit. The stage of pre-composition work is a very important phase in the creative process for Viktor Ulyanich. This is the period of ideas defining the formation of the artistic image and the organization of the musical fabric. Here, such an idea was the recognizable w-shaped arrangement of the five brightest stars in the constellation of Cassiopeia. It became the basis of the work's dramaturgy, its dynamic and register plan, and was reflected in the color-graphic matrix and graphic timbre-themed elements, thereby determining the fractal nature of the computer composition.

Much of the lower urinary tract, including the bladder, is lined by a stratified urothelium forming a highly differentiated, superficial umbrella cell layer. The apical plasma membrane as well as abundant cytoplasmic fusiform vesicles of the umbrella cells is covered by two-dimensional crystals that are formed by four membrane proteins named uroplakins (UPs) Ia, Ib, II, and III. UPs are synthesized on membrane-bound polysomes, and after several co- and posttranslational modifications they assemble into planar crystals in a post-Golgi vesicular compartment. Distension of the bladder may cause fusiform vesicles to fuse with the apical plasma membrane. We have investigated the early stages of uroplakin assembly by expressing the four uroplakins in 293T cells. Transfection experiments showed that, when expressed individually, only UPIb can exit from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and move to the plasma membrane, whereas UPII and UPIII reach the plasma membrane only when they form heterodimeric complexes with UPIa and UPIb, respectively. Heterodimer formation in the ER was confirmed by pulse-chase experiment followed by coimmunoprecipitation. Our results indicate that the initial building blocks for the assembly of crystalline uroplakin plaques are heterodimeric uroplakin complexes that form in the ER.

The genus Chionanthus (Oleaceae Hoffmans. & Link) includes deciduous or evergreen trees and shrubs distributed widely in tropical and sub-tropical areas, including a few temperate species. Although Chionanthus species are planted as ornamental garden plants and commercialized for natural products, genetic information for Chionanthus spp. is lacking. We created microsatellite-enriched libraries of Chionanthus retusus Lindl. & Paxton, assembled 1072 contigs, and detected 1010 repeats. The frequency of the repeats decreased with the increase in repeat length, and the most abundant motifs were: AG, AC, AAG, ACC, AT, and ACTC. We screened 384 markers on 12 accessions of four related taxa that included C. retusus, Chionanthus virginicus L., Chionanthus pygmaeus Small, and Osmanthus americanus (L.) Benth. & Hook. A total of 195 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers amplified and discriminated six accessions of C. retusus and 57 SSR markers amplified and discriminated across the four Oleaceae species screened. To identify the best markers to use in future experiments, the “Unique Pattern Informative Combination” (UPIC) values were calculated for all the markers and the 100 markers that were most effective are reported here. The percentage of heterozygous loci across the 384 markers was lowest for C. retusus (29.3%) and highest for O. americanus (68.9%). The SSR markers developed here could assist in taxonomy and hybridization investigations for breeding programs and authentication of varieties used as medicinal plants.

The paper deals with two philosophical postulates that although at first sight both do not have a direct link, it is my hypothesis that there may be a connection between them since in each one imagination plays an important role in the process of scientific discovery. On the one hand, it deals with the abductive reasoning by Charles Sanders Pierce (1839–1914), focusing on the problem related with abduction and scientific imagination, graphicacy or the ability to represent ideas through images, beelddenken or “pictorial thinking” as a form of communicating ideas without the use of any verbal form, and synthetic topology responsible for studying the qualitative relations of any 3-D geometrical structure. On the other hand, the author presents the philosophical postulates of the Theory of Composition: discontinuum-continuum by Julio Estrada (*1941), where reality and imagination play an important role in the process of musical creation, presenting a two-fold methodology of creation, (1) the macro timbre where the homogenization of the components of the rhythmsound takes place, and (2) the chronography, a graphic representation of the rhythmsound in movement. The latter is exemplified in this paper with the three examples of Estrada’s musical compositions, (1) the graphical score of eua’on UPIC (1980), (2) graphical recording for the series yuunohui’ (1983–2020), and (3) the topological variations included in the ishini’ioni String Quartet (1984–1990).

The mammalian bladder epithelium elaborates, as a terminal differentiation product, a specialized plasma membrane called asymmetric unit membrane (AUM) which is believed to play a role in strengthening and stabilizing the urothelial apical surface through its interactions with an underlying cytoskeleton. Previous studies indicate that the outer leaflet of AUM is composed of crystalline patches of 12-nm protein particles, and that bovine AUMs contain three major proteins: the 27- to 28-kD uroplakin I, the 15-kD uroplakin II and the 47-kD uroplakin III. As a step towards elucidating the AUM structure and function, we have cloned the cDNAs of bovine uroplakin I (UPI). Our results established the existence of two isoforms of bovine uroplakin I: a 27-kD uroplakin Ia and a 28-kD uroplakin Ib. These two glycoproteins are closely related with 39% identity in their amino acid sequences. Hydropathy plot revealed that both have four potential transmembrane domains (TMDs) with connecting loops of similar length. Proteolytic digestion of UPIa inserted in vitro into microsomal vesicles suggested that its two main hydrophilic loops are exposed to the luminal space, possibly involved in interacting with the luminal domains of other uroplakins to form the 12-nm protein particles. The larger loop connecting TMD3 and TMD4 of both UPIa and UPIb contains six highly conserved cysteine residues; at least one centrally located cysteine doublet in UPIa is involved in forming intramolecular disulfide bridges. The sequences of UPIa and UPIb (the latter is almost identical to a hypothetical, TGF beta-inducible, TI-1 protein of mink lung epithelial cells) are homologous to members of a recently described family all possessing four transmembrane domains (the "4TM family"); members of this family include many important leukocyte differentiation markers such as CD9, CD37, CD53, and CD63. The tissue-specific and differentiation-dependent expression as well as the naturally occurring crystalline state of uroplakin I molecules make them uniquely suitable, as prototype members of the 4TM family, for studying the structure and function of these integral membrane proteins.

AbstractThe massively parallel, nonlinear, three-dimensional (3D), toroidal, electrostatic, gyrokinetic, particle-in-cell (PIC), Cartesian geometry UCAN code, with particle ions and adiabatic electrons, has been successfully exercised to identify non-diffusive transport characteristics in present day tokamak discharges. The limitation in applying UCAN to larger scale discharges is the 1D domain decomposition in the toroidal (or z-) direction for massively parallel implementation using MPI which has restricted the calculations to a few hundred ion Larmor radii or gyroradii per plasma minor radius. To exceed these sizes, we have implemented 2D domain decomposition in UCAN with the addition of the y-direction to the processor mix. This has been facilitated by use of relevant components in the P2LIB library of field and particle management routines developed for UCLA's UPIC Framework of conventional PIC codes. The gyro-averaging specific to gyrokinetic codes is simplified by the use of replicated arrays for efficient charge accumulation and force deposition. The 2D domain-decomposed UCAN2 code reproduces the original 1D domain nonlinear results within round-off. Benchmarks of UCAN2 on the Cray XC30 Edison at NERSC demonstrate ideal scaling when problem size is increased along with processor number up to the largest power of 2 available, namely 131,072 processors. These particle weak scaling benchmarks also indicate that the 1 nanosecond per particle per time step and 1 TFlops barriers are easily broken by UCAN2 with 1 billion particles or more and 2000 or more processors.

Abstract The relative efficiencies of 2 Bacteriological Analytical Manual (BAM) pre-enrichments, lactose broth (LAC) and brilliant green water (BGW), were compared with Universal Pre-enrichment (UP) broth for the recovery of individual Salmonella serovars from instant nonfat dry milk (NFDM), dry whole milk (DWM), lactic casein (LC), and liquid whole milk (LWM). BGW was compared with UP broth for the analysis of NFDM and DWM but not with the other 2 matrixes. LAC was compared with UP broth for the analysis of LC and LWM. UP broth was made both from a commercial dehydrated preparation (UPC) and from individual ingredients (UPI). Bulk quantities of the selected dairy foods were inoculated with Salmonella serovars at levels intended to produce fractionally positive results, where at least half of the test portions analyzed, with one of the methods being evaluated, would be shown to be Salmonella-positive. For NFDM, in 6 of 9 experiments, with 2 different Salmonella serovars, BGW was significantly more productive than either UPI or UPC broth (p &lt; 0.05). Salmonella was recovered from 118 of 180 test portions with BGW, from 25 of 180 test portions with UPC, and from 14 of 180 test portions with UPI. For DWM, in 2 of 4 experiments, with 2 different Salmonella serovars, BGW was significantly more productive than either UPI or UPC broth (p &lt; 0.05). Salmonella was recovered from 67 of 80 test portions with BGW, from 36 of 80 test portions with UPC, and from 37 of 80 test portions with UPI. For LWM, in 9 of 9 experiments, with 3 different Salmonella serovars, there were no significant differences among the broths. Salmonella was recovered from 120 of 180 test portions with LAC, from 135 of 180 test portions with UPC, and from 129 of 180 test portions with UPI. For LC, in 5 of 7 experiments, with 2 different Salmonella serovars, both UPI and UPC broth were significantly more productive than LAC (p &lt; 0.05). Salmonella was recovered from 42 of 140 test portions with LAC, from 114 of 140 test portions with UPC, and from 114 of 140 test portions with UPI. In addition, overall results showed that UPC and UPI broths were equivalent for the recovery of Salmonella from the foods tested, without regard to their performance in comparison with either LAC or BGW.

The apical surface of the mammalian urothelium is almost completely covered by two-dimensional protein crystals (known as urothelial plaques) of hexagonally packed 16 nm particles consisting of two UP (uroplakin) heterodimers, i.e. UPs Ia/II and Ib/III pairs. UPs are functionally important as they contribute to the urothelial permeability barrier function, and UPIa may serve as the receptor for the uropathogenic Escherichia coli that causes over 90% of urinary tract infections. We study here how the UP proteins are assembled and targeted to the urothelial apical surface, paying special attention to the roles of the prosequence of UPII in UP oligomerization. We show that (i) the formation of the UPIa/UPII heterodimer, necessary for ER (endoplasmic reticulum) exit, requires disulfide formation in the prosequence domain of proUPII (the immature form of UPII still containing its prosequence); (ii) differentiation-dependent N-glycosylation of the prosequence leads to UP stabilization; (iii) a failure to form tetramers in cultured urothelial cells, in part due to altered glycosylation of the prosequence, may block two-dimensional crystal formation; and (iv) the prosequence of UPII remains attached to the mature protein complex on the urothelial apical surface even after it has been cleaved by the trans-Golgi-network-associated furin. Our results indicate that proper secondary modifications of the prosequence of UPII play important roles in regulating the oligomerization and function of the UP protein complex.

The simulation results indicate that the model shows a good dynamic performance of UPFC.

The main objective of power flow control for unified power flow controller (UPFC) is to increase the transmission capacity over the existing transmission corridor or line. This paper presents a practical engineering methodology of embedding the power flow control model of UPFC into the commercial software -- power system analysis software package (PSASP) based on its user program interface (UPI) function. In the proposed methodology, the interface currents of UPFC series side and UPFC shunt side between the UPFC device and the network are used to control the transmission line power flow and UPFC bus voltage, respectively. In UPFC series side, the current of UPFC series branch is calculated from the power target equation of the controlled line. In UPFC shunt side, the shunt reactive current of UPFC is used to control the bus voltage. Simulation results on a practical power system show that the proposed methodology can be efficiently applied to the engineering research and analysis of the real power grid with UPFC with good convergence and only one control parameter needed to be prescribed.

Abstract Background Regulatory T cells (Treg) are essential for normal pregnancy outcome. In vivo, Treg depletion during pregnancy leads to autoimmunity that results in total pregnancy loss. The paucity of Treg and effector cells in normal pregnancy uteroplacental interfaces (UPI) renders the mechanism unclear. Methods Low-dose (0.1ug) diphtheria toxin was given on GD11 to female C57-Bl6 FoxP3-DTR under a syngeneic pregnancy. On day 17, pup weight and gender was determined and UPI were removed and subject to FACS and confocal immunofluorescence. Results Subtle Treg depletion during pregnancy resulted in effector T cell influx preferentially to UPIs of antigenic (male) fetuses resulting in a reduction of fetal weights. Surprisingly, we also observed an increase of Treg numbers in the antigenic UPIs. Preliminary results indicate a local interaction between antigen-presenting cells, T cells and Treg in the previously depleted UPI. Conclusions Systemic interruption of Treg tolerance during pregnancy allows for maternal attack on antigenic fetuses. In the unperturbed UPI, the absence of Treg suggests that maternal tolerance is mediated elsewhere. In disrupted maternal tolerance, the repopulation of Treg to the UPI provides insight into Treg cellular interactions that may contribute to the re-establishment of tolerance under physiologic conditions.

The major factors associated with virulence of UPEC are fimbrial adhesins, which mediate specific attachment to host receptors and trigger innate host responses. Another group of adhesins is represented by the autotransporter (AT) subgroup of proteins. The genome-sequenced prototype UPEC strain CFT073 contains 11 putative AT-encoding genes. In this study, we have performed a detailed molecular characterization of two closely related AT adhesins from CFT073: UpaB (c0426) and UpaC (c0478). PCR screening revealed that theupaBandupaCAT-encoding genes are common inE. coli. TheupaBandupaCgenes were cloned and characterized in a recombinantE. coliK-12 strain background. This revealed that they encode proteins located at the cell surface but possess different functional properties: UpaB mediates adherence to several ECM proteins, while UpaC expression is associated with increased biofilm formation. In CFT073,upaBis expressed whileupaCis transcriptionally repressed by the global regulator H-NS. In competitive colonization experiments employing the mouse UTI model, CFT073 significantly outcompeted itsupaB(but notupaC) isogenic mutant strain in the bladder. This attenuated phenotype was also observed in single-challenge experiments, where deletion of theupaBgene in CFT073 significantly reduced early colonization of the bladder.

UPEC strains utilize autotransporter (AT) proteins for pathogenesis, especially the development of biofilm in the urinary tract. Objective: There is no general data about the frequency of ATs among the UPECs, thus we decided to assess the frequency and AT patterns in patients with UPEC recovered from UTI, as well as to find the possible correlation between the ATs and biofilm. Materials and Methods: Totally, 200 Escherichia coli were recovered from the urine of outpatients and inpatients with UTIs in Iran. Biofilm production was assessed by a phenotypic method. Extraction of DNA was done using the boiling method, and the extracted products were used for polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Amplification of AT genes was done by PCR with an optimized program in a thermal cycler apparatus. Then, the amplified genes were evaluated by electrophoresis. Results: Among the UPEC isolates, 63.5% and 36.5% were isolated from cystitis and pyelonephritis patients, respectively. In addition, the majority of UPECs (66.5%) were associated with hospitalized patients. Totally, 92% of isolates produced biofilm, of which 53.5%, 21.5%, and 17% were weak, moderate, and strong biofilm producers, respectively. Among investigated ATs, the most frequent genes were upaH (89%), upaB (87%), upaG (79%), vat (78%), sat (69%), upaC (67%), and ag43 (37%). There were 37 AT patterns among UPECs, and pattern 1 with the presence of all AT genes was the most common. It was found that the prevalence of upaB and upaG was significantly higher among the cystitis isolates compared to pyelonephritis isolates. Further, no significant difference was observed between the AT genes, except for upaC (P=0.003), and the intensity of biofilm formation in UPEC isolates. Conclusion: According to the high prevalence of AT genes among UPECs isolated from inpatients and outpatients, these factors can be ideal vaccine candidates for designing effective vaccines against the isolates. Evaluation of the efficacy of these ATs against UPECs is under investigation.

In order to study user-producer interaction (UPI) in emerging pharmaceutical and food innovation processes, a classification of user involvement has been developed, including a contextualised view on UPIs. Case studies are performed on two types of UPI: demand articulation in intermediary organisations and interactive learning in consortia, in the pharmaceutical and food sector, respectively.Regarding demand articulation processes, articulation of problems, needs, demands and expectations through agenda-setting practices is important. Expression and evaluation of demands with other factors leads to moblization of creative potential of prospective users and facilitation of emerging innovation processes.Regarding interactive learning, geographical, organisational, regulatory and cognitive proximity conditions could facilitate structures for emerging technology development, and codes and networks for frequent interaction between complementary stakeholders. Demands, concerns and opportunities are articulated by shared visions. Organised UPIs via intermediary user organisations or consortia seem to be the important tools for demand articulation and interactive learning involving patient organisations, researchers and private and public organisations.

The increased usage of power-sensitive electronic devices has prompted interest in power conditioning solutions, which is no surprise. As a result, some type of compensation must be supplied if power output remains below the standards' prescribed limitations. The UPQC (Unified Power Quality Controller) is one of numerous AC Transmission System families that can control voltage, impedance, and phase angle among other factors (FACTS). This study focuses on modern UPFC systems that have increased power quality efficiency to help utilities reduce voltage concerns. One of the FACTS controls for lowering stress sales effects is a unified power quality conditioner (UPQC). The quadrature voltage is specified using the UPQC series compensator. As a result, the compensator series never utilizes active power in a continuous scenario. As mentioned in the approach, a low power rating compensator injects voltage to remedy the system's power quality problem. The voltage is decreased and the power factor is raised when the fluid logic controller is used in conjunction with traditional UPQC. Furthermore, the load factor has been improved. The circuit is then imitated in MATLAB / SIMULINK using a fluctuating logo controller.

Abstract The Bacteriological Analytical Manual (BAM) Salmonella culture method did not detect Salmonella Typhi in mamey, the tropical fruit that was implicated in a 1999 typhoid outbreak. The relative effectiveness of BAM's nonselective preenrichment and selective media for the recovery of S. Typhi from mamey was examined to determine if the BAM's preenrichment/selective enrichment strategy was the cause of the method's failure with this food. The preenrichment media were lactose broth, buffered peptone water (BPW), and universal preenrichment (UP) broth. The selective enrichment media were selenite cystine (SC) broth, tetrathionate (TT) broth, and Rappaport-Vassiliadis (RV) medium. UP broth was significantly more effective (P &lt; 0.05) than either lactose broth or BPW for the recovery of 2 different S. Typhi strains from mamey. Of 120 test portions tested, 105 S. Typhi-positive test portions were recovered using UP broth, whereas only 1 S. Typhi-positive test portion was recovered using BPW, and no S. Typhi-positive test portions were recovered using lactose broth. SC and TT broths were both significantly more effective (P &lt; 0.05) than RV medium. Of 105 S. Typhi-positive test portions, SC broth recovered 80, TT broth recovered 67, and RV medium recovered 9. After the above comparison, an incomplete UP (UPI) broth formulation was found to be significantly more effective (P &lt; 0.05) than the complete formulation (UPC). Of 80 total positive test portions, UPI recovered 71, whereas UPC recovered only 48. The following UP broth formulations were compared to determine if any of the components of the UP broth formulation were inhibitory to S. Typhi: UPC, UP broth without sodium pyruvate (UPS), UP broth without ferric ammonium citrate (UPF), UP broth without MgSO4 (UPM), and UPI. It was found that none of the ingredients were inhibitory to S. Typhi and that, out of 140 total test portions, UPI and UPF, with 108 and 103 positive test portions, respectively, were significantly more effective (P &lt; 0.05) than the other UP broth formulations (82 for UPC, 74 for UPS, and 60 for UPM). Rather than being inhibitory to the growth of S. Typhi, it appears that ferric ammonium citrate enhanced the growth of competitors which suppressed the growth of S. Typhi. These results demonstrate that UPI and UPF are effective for the recovery of S. Typhi from mamey.

Rapid urbanization has posed numerous negative impacts on the environment, including fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution. However, quantitative investigations of the PM2.5 concentration trends over an urban-rural gradient at the local level are still lacking. The urban particulate matter island (UPI) effect, representing the phenomenon that high particle concentrations in urban areas are gradually attenuated to surrounding areas, was adopted and modified in this paper to study the Hangzhou Bay area from 2000 to 2015. We found the following: (1) every urban area in the Hangzhou Bay area experienced rapid expansion, especially during 2000–2005; (2) more than half of the urban areas suffered UPI problems, and these urban areas had relatively high and stable UPI intensity (UPII) values, although the UPI footprint (UPIFP) values decreased with urban expansion; and (3) urban areas could be divided into three categories: plain areas, hilly areas and the junction of plains and hills, and the probability of the UPI effect varied significantly for different categories. This paper can compensate for the lack of research on the UPI effect at the local level and provide scientific evidence for air pollution control during urban agglomeration planning.

This study highlights the recent developments in the use of Polyvinyl-chloride (PVC) in the construction technology. The PVC is a very versatile plastic, resistant to fire (prevents the spread of fire) wear and rupture, with excellent anti-chemicals and anti-corrosion characteristics. The material could be produced with plasticizers (PVC, more flexible) or without (uPVC, more rigid). The thermoplastic polymer is the most widely used polymer for structural concrete applications; either as a simple tube for pour-in concrete or the more complicated Stay-in-place formwork (SIPF) systems. In this study, the structural performance of uPVC-encased concrete (uPEC) used as a compression member is reviewed, for the period start-end of 2020, with emphases on the resistance of these members to the applied axial load. The study is extended to cover the seismic behavior of these confining devices when used in combination with the brittle concrete. Several strength models have been proposed for evaluating the bearing capacity of uPEC columns under monotonic axial compression load. Most of these models are based on limited number of test results and might yield unsatisfactory predictions. On the other hand, the number of models for predicting the strain at peak stress are limited. The main features of these models were reviewed and recommendations presented for future research.

In our proposed work we find the power level in distribution network using optimization algorithm. The optimization algorithm is used to optimization the power and find which place is suitable for place the STATCOM or DSTATCOM. This is used to maintain the reactive power in distribution network.

With rapid urbanization and industrialization, PM2.5 pollution exerts a significant negative impact on the urban eco-environment and on residents’ health. Previous studies have demonstrated that cities in China are characterized by urban particulate matter island (UPI) phenomena, i.e., higher PM2.5 concentrations are observed in urban areas than in rural settings. How, though, nature and socioeconomic environments interact to influence UPI intensities is a question that still awaits a general explanation. To fill this knowledge gap, this study investigates spatiotemporal variations in UPI effects with respect to different climatic settings and city sizes in 240 cities in China from 2000 to 2015 using remotely sensed data and explores the effective mechanism of human–environmental factors on UPI dynamics based upon the Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) model. In particular, a conceptual framework that considers natural environments, technology, population, and economics is proposed to explore the factors influencing UPIs. The results show (1) that about 70% of the cities in China selected exhibited UPI effects from 2000 to 2015. In addition, UPI intensities and the number of UPI-related cities decreased over time. It is noteworthy that PM2.5 pollution shifted from urban to rural areas. (2) Elevation was the most efficient driving factor of UPI variations, followed by precipitation, population density, NDVI, per capita GDP, and PM2.5 emission per unit GDP. (3) Climatic backgrounds and city sizes influenced the compositions and performance of dominant factors regarding UPI phenomena. This study provides valuable a reference for PM2.5 pollution mitigation in cities experiencing global climate change and rapid urbanization and thus can help sustainable urban developments.

En el Estado de México, existe una gran diversidad de productores de maíz, desde los más tecnificados hasta los de subsistencia, estos últimos, están relacionados con pequeñas unidades de producción, las cuales frecuentemente tienen problemas por no alcanzar precios competitivos en insumos y servicios derivado del bajo volumen requerido por unidad, incrementando sus costos por arriba de la escala productiva promedio. El presente trabajo se centra en la eficiencia económica de los productores a partir de comparar los costos unitarios promedio, para lo cual, se propone de forma documentada un análisis que optimiza dichos costos (movilización de insumos, producción, costos de servicios de labores agrícolas y maquinaria). Se propone la agrupación y asociación de productores que permitirá dicha optimización de costos. En el caso de la movilización de insumos y producción se partió de la capacidad de carga de diferentes unidades de transporte mientras que, la adquisición de maquinaria partió de reducir los costos de servicios de labranza y el tamaño de la agrupación de los productores. Los resultados indican que la agrupación para movilización de semilla mejorada (UPISM) sea 33-40 ha o de 6-27 UP reduciendo el costo en 55%, para el caso de fertilizante (UPIF) de 15-25 ha o de 3 a 14 UP que permite reducir el costo en 27%, la adquisición de maquinaria (UPITR) es rentable a partir de 40 ha e implica la integración de 6 a 27 UP y una reducción de costos en 10%; mientras que, para la movilización de la producción (UPICM) implica 4-10 ha o 1 y 3 UP que reduce costos en 38%. Por último, la UPI Integral sugiere la agrupación de 40 ha lo que permitiría reducir los costos en 55, 38, 10 y 48%, respectivamente.

A simple and efficient algorithm is proposed for solving the economic dispatch problem of power system with valve point discontinuities employing a particle swarm optimization based approach. Evolutionary methods such as GA and PSO are known to perform better than conventional gradient based optimization methods for non convex optimization problems. This reactive power management in economic load dispatches plays a vital role in improving power quality of the system. The power compensation and economic load dispatches is major problem in distribution network. The power is maintain the state of the UPQC (Unified power quality conditioner). The UPAC controlled by the STATCOM or DSTATCOM. The performance of the proposed method has been compared with conventional PSO. The effectiveness of the algorithm has been tested on a test system having three generating units.

Untuk mendapatkan bahan baku udang yang sesuai, seluruh anggota rantai pasok harus menerapkan persyaratan jaminan mutu dan keamanan hasil perikanan sesuai Kepmen KP Nomor: 52A/KEPMEN-KP/2013. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengevaluasi penerapan persyaratan jaminan mutu dan keamanan hasil perikanan sepanjang rantai pasok bahan baku udang untuk unit pengolahan ikan (UPI) di Jakarta Utara. Dua UPI telah dipilih menjadi responden untuk dirunut ke hulu mengenai pemenuhan persyaratan dimaksud. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui survei, observasi dan wawancara kepada UPI, pengumpul/pemasok, pembudidaya dan pembenih. Analisis kesenjangan dan uji korelasi berganda digunakan untuk menilai kesesuaian penerapan persyaratan jaminan mutu dan keamanan hasil perikanan. Hasil identifikasi menunjukkan masih terdapat kesenjangan penerapan yang dilakukan oleh pembudidaya dan pengumpul/pemasok dengan standar yang ada. Tingkat kesesuaian pada pembudidaya 58% (kurang sesuai) dan pemasok 48% (tidak sesuai). Apresiasi UPI terhadap mutu dan keamanan hasil perikanan masih belum memadai, diduga karena permintaan di pasar global sangat tinggi sedangkan pasokannya tidak sesuai. Penerbitan sertifikat yang terpisah-pisah di antara rantai pasok diduga menjadi salah satu penyebab. Diperlukan perubahan strategi kebijakan dalam pelaksanaan sistem sertifikasi udang budidaya untuk ekspor yang terintegrasi dalam satu sertifikat.Shrimp is Indonesia's leading export commodity that requires quality and safe raw materials. To get appropriate shrimp raw materials, all members of the supply chain must apply the quality assurance and safety requirements of fishery products in accordance with Ministerial Decree KP Number: 52A/KEPMEN-KP/2013. This study aimed to evaluate the implementation of quality assurance and safety requirements for fishery products along the supply chain of cultured shrimp raw material suppliers for fish processing units (UPI) in North Jakarta. Two UPIs have been selected as respondents whose suppliers were evaluated regarding the fulfillment of the specified requirements. Data collection was carried out through surveys, observations, and interviews with UPI, collectors/suppliers, farmers, and breeders. Gap analysis and multiple correlation tests were used to assess the appropriateness of the implementation of quality assurance and fishery product safety requirements. The results show that gaps existed between the implementation of the requirement by farmers and suppliers compared with existing standards. The implementation level for farmers is 58% (less according) and the supplier 48% (not according). It was observed that UPI's appreciation of the quality and safety of fishery products was inadequate, allegedly because demand in the global market is very high while the supply does not meet the demand. Issuance of separate quality and safety certificates along the supply chain are believed to be one of the causes. There is a need to change the policy strategy in implementing the shrimp culture certification system for export which can be integrated into one certificate.
