Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Background Although never directly compared, structured interviews are reported as being more reliable than unstructured interviews. This study compared the reliability of both types of interview when applied to a common pool of applicants for positions in an emergency medicine residency program. Methods In 2008, one structured interview was added to the two unstructured interviews traditionally used in our resident selection process. A formal job analysis using the critical incident technique guided the development of the structured interview tool. This tool consisted of 7 scenarios assessing 4 of the domains deemed essential for success as a resident in this program. The traditional interview tool assessed 5 general criteria. In addition to these criteria, the unstructured panel members were asked to rate each candidate on the same 4 essential domains rated by the structured panel members. All 3 panels interviewed all candidates. Main outcomes were the overall, interitem, and interrater reliabilities, the correlations between interview panels, and the dimensionality of each interview tool. Results Thirty candidates were interviewed. The overall reliability reached 0.43 for the structured interview, and 0.81 and 0.71 for the unstructured interviews. Analyses of the variance components showed a high interrater, low interitem reliability for the structured interview, and a high interrater, high interitem reliability for the unstructured interviews. The summary measures from the 2 unstructured interviews were significantly correlated, but neither was correlated with the structured interview. Only the structured interview was multidimensional. Conclusions A structured interview did not yield a higher overall reliability than both unstructured interviews. The lower reliability is explained by a lower interitem reliability, which in turn is due to the multidimensionality of the interview tool. Both unstructured panels consistently rated a single dimension, even when prompted to assess the 4 specific domains established as essential to succeed in this residency program.

Abstract (sommario):
In the early 1980s, Ray Pahl, a sociologist at the University of Kent, and PhD student Claire Wallace conducted interviews examining young people’s experiences of growing up, work, and unemployment on the Isle of Sheppey; these interviews are now deposited at the University of Essex, and this article examines how historians and others might reuse them to interrogate other subjects. The article examines one working-class young woman’s ideas about gender and sexuality in the early 1980s, using the Listening Guide method developed by psychologist Carol Gilligan to probe the individual subjectivity and emotion, as well as the cultural discourses at play in this interview. The interviewee was a young woman who was involved in a culture of casual sex with men “on the ships,” and the article focuses on how she saw the exchanges of money, drink, and gifts between them and herself, and how she avoided seeing her actions as “prostitution.” The analysis shows how in a particular locality in the early 1980s, a particular subculture could allow some young women to sidestep the dominant codes governing young, working-class women’s sexuality and go “on the ships” without seeing this as marking them as “prostitutes”’ or any related category. Thus, the article troubles the ontology of “prostitution” as a category. It also suggests how we can use a single individual’s narrative to offer a broader account of cultures or subcultures, by starting with the individual and examining how one subjectivity navigated and interacted with broader cultural discourses. Finally, this article also offers suggestions about some of the methodological and ethical issues with reusing archived sociological data but argues that it holds rich possibilities.

Abstract (sommario):
Because the researcher is the instrument in semistructured or unstructured qualitative interviews, unique researcher characteristics have the potential to influence the collection of empirical materials. This concept, although widely acknowledged, has garnered little systematic investigation. This article discusses the interviewer characteristics of three different interviewers who are part of a qualitative research team. The researcher/interviewers – and authors of this article – reflect on their own and each other’s interviews and explore the ways in which individual interview practices create unique conversational spaces. The results suggest that certain interviewer characteristics may be more effective than others in eliciting detailed narratives from respondents depending on the perceived sensitivity of the topic, but that variation in interviewer characteristics may benefit rather than detract from the goals of team-based qualitative inquiry. The authors call for the inclusion of enhanced self-reflexivity in interviewer training and development activities and argue against standardization of interviewer practices in qualitative research teams.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper I reflect on a series of informal or ‘unstructured’ interviews with people experiencing chronic job insecurity. I show that far from being merely a source of data these interviews are dynamic social interactions wherein multiple dialogues are conducted between multiple selves. I argue that because interviews are epistemologically ambiguous, morally ambivalent and emotionally charged they cannot be seen simply as repositories of ‘objective facts’ but should also be understood as mutually constructed social events with an existential quality sui generis.

Abstract (sommario):
Siblings' constructive and unstructured shared activities were examined as moderators of the links between first- and second-born siblings' adjustment across a two-year period in adolescence. Siblings ( N = 189 dyads) reported on their depression, peer competency, self worth during home interviews, and their time together in constructive (e.g., sports, hobbies) and unstructured (e.g., hanging out) activities during seven nightly phone interviews. Siblings spent an average of 10 hours together across seven days, about 12% in constructive and 25% in unstructured activities. Regression analyses revealed that, controlling for adjustment at Time 1, associations between siblings' adjustment scores were moderated by siblings' constructive and unstructured shared time. These patterns were most evident in mixed-sex dyads.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the perceived wellbeing benefits of the unstructured camping experience for young adults. Design/methodology/approach This is a cross-sectional descriptive phenomenological study. Young adults between the ages of 21 and 30 years with recent experiences of camping were invited to participate in the study. A descriptive phenomenological approach was taken, involving photograph-guided semi-structured interviews and Colaizzi’s seven-stage analysis framework. Ethical approval was granted by the university where the study was managed. Findings Four female participants were interviewed; each interview lasted approximately 60 minutes in duration. Unstructured camping holidays were perceived to heighten general perceptions of health and wellbeing. Five themes emerged: “Getting away”, “Appreciation of the Natural Environment”, “Relationship Maintenance”, “Tranquility and Relaxation” and “Freedom and Adventure/Exploration”. The unstructured nature of the activity encouraged participant’s freewill to appreciate the natural environment and to engage in physical activity. Escape from everyday stressors to a tranquil environment provided the space and time to think and talk, relax and be active. Originality/value Green care initiatives could use the unstructured camping experience, or what the authors have framed as the “back to basics” model of camping, as a tool to promote general health and wellbeing in clinical and non-clinical young adult populations. Further research is needed to substantiate the evidence base, especially to probe further around the benefits of the spontaneity of the “back to basics” camping experience, in contrast to the structured group camp experiences the authors advocate in the UK and overseas for children’s leisure or health purposes.

Abstract (sommario):
The newest iteration of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual–fifth edition (DSM-5), is the first to include the diagnosis of disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD). The assessment and diagnosis of psychopathology in children are complicated, particularly for mood disorders. Practice can be guided by the use of well-validated instruments. However, as this is a new diagnosis existing instruments have not yet been evaluated for the diagnosis of DMDD. This study seeks to provide a method for using existing structured interview instruments to assess for this contemporary diagnosis. The Children’s Interview for Psychiatric Syndromes (ChIPS) and the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview for Children and Adolescents (MINI-KID) are reviewed and existing items consistent with a diagnosis of DMDD are identified. Finally, a case is presented using both measures and applying the theoretical items identified to illustrate how one might use these measures to assess DMDD. Limitations and future directions are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose This paper aims to identify the expressions and flows of tacit knowledge in the unstructured decision process. In this type of process, decision-makers use not only the explicit knowledge but also aspects such as intuition, experience and other forms of tacit knowledge. The research developed a qualitative approach, through a study of multiple cases, and applied semi-structured interviews to ten executives. The analysis of data was carried out according to Flores (1994) interpretative analysis of text technique. Results indicated that there was the insertion of tacit knowledge in all unstructured decision-making routines. It was also detected the need to explicitly add the routine of evaluation to the Mintzberg et al.’s (1976) model as elements of tacit knowledge were also identified at this stage of the decision-making process. Design/methodology/approach The research has taken a qualitative approach, through a study of multiple cases, applying semi-structured interviews to ten executives. The analysis of data was carried out according to technique for interpretative analysis of the text. Findings Results indicated that there was tacit knowledge in all unstructured decision-making routines. Also detected was the need to explicitly add the routine of evaluation to the model. Research limitations/implications It was unable to perform psychological studies to investigate the deepest cognitive and emotional aspects of managers, and it does not address, in depth, some issues that are related to tacit knowledge in decisions and that would be considered relevant. Practical implications Although this research was unable to dissect the composition of tacit knowledge in unstructured decision process, a better understanding of the aspects that make up the knowledge in question has been developed, providing some decision-making guidelines to managers. Social implications The language between communications actors can share decision-making rules to assist in the production and process of arguments necessary for the debate, evaluation and attribution of institutionally recurrent decisions. Originality/value The original contribution is present in a detailed description of the expressions of flows of tacit knowledge in unstructured decision-making processes, based on the model of Mintzberg et al. (1976). From the influence of tacit knowledge, it was found that the model in question needs to consider the relevance of the evaluation phase, as a stage equivalent to the other described by Mintzberg et al. (1976). These aspects have been better explained in the introduction and conclusion. Participant observation was not possible because the decision had already been taken by the informant at the moment of the interviews.

Abstract (sommario):
In the last several years there has been an increase in the amount of qualitative research using in-depth interviews and comprehensive content analyses in sport psychology. However, no explicit method has been provided to deal with the large amount of unstructured data. This article provides common guidelines for organizing and interpreting unstructured data. Two main operations are suggested and discussed: first, coding meaningful text segments, or creating tags, and second, regrouping similar text segments, or creating categories. Furthermore, software programs for the microcomputer are presented as a way to facilitate the organization and interpretation of qualitative data.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper looks at the academic staff selection practices at the Colleges of Technology in Oman. An inductive reasoning or bottom up approach was used in this research project. The main method of data collection used was semi-structured interviews conducted with selected government officials whose position and experience would enable them to provide useful data on the issues being explore. Some of the main findings of the research was that the interviewers predominantly conducted unstructured interviews and the interviewers had not received any training on how to conduct interviews and carryout the selection process. In addition, the interviewers did not have any standard selection criteria when recruiting academic staff to the college of technology. The research findings will help administrators in Oman to improve the recruitment and selection process of academic Staff.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: The potential for the secondary use of electronic health records (EHRs) is underused due to restrictions in national legislation. For privacy purposes, legislative restrictions limit the availability and content of EHR data provided to secondary users. These limitations do not encourage healthcare organisations to develop procedures to promote the secondary use of EHRs. Objective: The objective of this study is to identify factors that restrict the secondary use of unstructured EHRs in academic research in Finland and Sweden. Method: A study was conducted to identify these availability-restricting issues that pertain to the academic secondary use of unstructured EHRs. Using semi-structured interviews, 14 domain experts in science, hospital management and business were interviewed to evaluate the efficiency of procedures and technologies that are implemented in secondary use processes. Results: The results demonstrate three aspects that restrict the availability of unstructured EHRs for secondary purposes: (i) the management and (ii) privacy preservation of such data as well as (iii) potential secondary users. Conclusion: Based on these categories, two approaches for the secondary use of unstructured EHRs are identified: the protected processing environment and altered data. Implications: The protected processing environment ensures patient privacy by providing unstructured EHRs for exclusive user groups that have preferred use intentions. Compared to the use of such processing environments, data alteration enables the secondary use of unstructured EHRs for a larger user group with various use intentions but that yield less valuable content.

Discussed in this paper are experiences with leadership and power from the points of view of four women elementary school principals and the teachers with whom they work. Focused on the concepts of leadership, communication, decisionmaking, and conflict resolution, data were collected through semi-structured and unstructured interviews with principals, and surveys and structured interviews with teachers. Interview data were analyzed by transcription to determine emergent themes; survey data were analyzed statistically. Findings included descriptions of principals’ uses of facilitative power from their self reports and the reports of those teachers with whom they worked. The paper also provides examples of power as both a multi-dimensional and multi-directional concept.

Abstract (sommario):
Many professionals, like journalists, writers, or consultants, need to acquire information from various sources, make sense of this unstructured evidence, structure their observations, and finally create and deliver their product, such as a report or a presentation. In formative interviews, we found that tools allowing structuring of observations are often disconnected from the corresponding evidence. Therefore, we designed a sensemaking environment with a flexible observation graph that visually ties together evidence in unstructured documents with the user’s structured knowledge. This is achieved through bi-directional deep links between highlighted document portions and nodes in the observation graph. In a controlled study, we compared users’ sensemaking strategies using either the observation graph or a simple text editor on a large display. Results show that the observation graph represents a holistic, compact representation of users’ observations, which can be linked to unstructured evidence on demand. In contrast, users taking textual notes required much more display space to spatially organize source documents containing unstructured evidence. This implies that spatial organization is a powerful strategy to structure observations even if the available space is limited.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper a model of teachers’ attitudes to integrating children with moderate learning difficulties into ordinary classrooms is described. The basis of this model is an AID analysis described in a previous paper (Thomas, 1986) and an analysis of the spontaneous comments of teachers in unstructured interviews. The sample consisted of 550 teachers in Tucson, Arizona and Devon, U.K. drawn from primary, secondary and special schools and advisory services. From the data of the unstructured interviews, four factors, not mentioned in the earlier paper, are included in the model. These are: traumatic experiences with the handicapped, class size, the what-happened-yesterday factor and leadership. Some implications of the model, the generality of the findings and suggestions for future are included in the discussion.

Abstract (sommario):
Structured interviews are much more valid than unstructured ones. An important prerequisite for structured interviews is the use of an interview guide of high quality. Hints for the construction of interview guides are widespread in the literature, but there is no systematic collection of generally applicable rules for the evaluation and construction of interview guides. We, therefore, systematically collected the relevant rules concerning structure, contents, and question formulation in the Requirement-profile for In-depth-Interviews in Psychological Assessment (RIPA). By applying RIPA, we get indications of the strengths and weaknesses of interview guides. In our study the following questions are answered: How well can novices understand these rules, and are they able to evaluate a part of an interview guide correctly? Fifty-five students of psychology evaluated a part of an interview guide using RIPA. The mean percentage of correct decisions varied between 63% and 89%. This shows the comprehensibility and applicability of RIPA when used for the evaluation of a part of an in-depth interview guide. It seems plausible that RIPA may also be useful for the construction of in-depth interview guides.

Abstract (sommario):
Interviews conducted in situ—literally at “the scene of the crime”1—can elicit more nuanced data than interviews conducted in locations removed from where the activity in question occurred. This is particularly true when conducting research on and with members of spatially conscious, “deviant,” and vulnerable communities who may for the sake of social and existential survival defer to rehearsed narratives and formula stories about their actions and perspectives when interviewed in “safe” spaces. In this article, which is based on participant observation and structured, semi-structured, and unstructured interviews with 108 graffiti writers, I contend that place-based elicitation can provide researchers with greater exposure to extradiscursive expression, reflection, and affective narratives about transgressive and illicit subcultural activity. The method of place-based elicitation has implications for where and how ethnographers and other qualitative researchers conduct interviews and seek to extract nuanced data from respondents.

This paper represents an attempt to position the in-depth interview through the description of its main characteristics in relation to the existing classifications of the interview and the history of its use. Therefore, the argumentation begins with the description of the in-depth interview, and continues with systematic comparison in relation to the most widespread classification of interviews into structured, semistructured and unstructured. After relational determination, it goes deeper into the analysis of the specificity of the in-depth interview method, through its analytical advantages, theoretical grounding and general connection with the ethical dilemmas which researchers must be aware of. Abstract (sommario):
Psychological needs are present in all human beings, but are likely to be heightened for people with dementia because they are usually more vulnerable and less likely to be able to take action to satisfy these needs. The open, unstructured interviews of six patients with dementia were performed with the aim of clarifying their psychological needs in the social care institution. Key themes, derived from interviews: the need for emotional support; the need to maintain autonomy and independence; the need for dignified attitude; the need to participate in decision making and control their lives; the need to preserve the sense of identity; the need to engage in meaningful activities. One expert - social rehabilitator – was interviewed to find out, in which areas dementia patients need psychological support. The expert interview discovered the following themes: dignified attitude; emotional support; meaningful activities; the sense of identity. Increased competence of understanding psychological needs and how those needs can be met, are essential for delivering high-quality care for persons with dementia living in social care institutions.

Abstract (sommario):
In this article, we report on a web-based survey of 517 qualitative researchers' perceptions of the risks inherent in qualitative unstructured interviews. Although emotions manifest during these qualitative interviews may be viewed as “natural” in the context of the types of losses experienced by the interviewees, the emotional responses cannot be identified in an Institutional Review Board (IRB) review of the proposal. The mitigation of this emotional response is, however, the responsibility of the researcher, and ethics education and short courses must include such instruction. Psychological harm to the researcher, although rare, is a possibility for which researchers must be prepared. The authors conclude by suggesting six principles of ethical conduct for qualitative researchers. These principles should be useful to IRBs and included in ethics and qualitative methods courses.

This paper provides essential information for lecturers and educational institutions to think creatively in teaching English via online. The rapid development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and the Covid-19 emergency made lecturers and educational institutions think harder than usual. Higher education has used a powerful learning pattern and strategic policy to overcome the problem namely structure and unstructured online learning platform. The research aimed to find what platform is suitable in higher education and how lecturers create particular activity using HOTs to make students to think creatively. It also underlined that this new platform provides useful options that not only offers material delivery features but also an interactive communication feature. There were selected 10 lecturers of ELT in higher education level being interviewed and separated into two group users of structured and unstructured digital learning models. The distribution was based on their experience on teaching English using both models. This study analyzed interviews with lecturers who are experienced in usage of structured and unstructured online Learning platform. The findings were discussed by resuming and then drawing the conclusion through interpreting the findings. The findings from these data illustrated that these new learning patterns had a significant impact on students' cognitive and psychomotor abilities. Moreover, this model also significantly affected institution quality control.

The research objective was to find out and describe the traditions of the Chinese New Year celebrations in the Chinese ethnic community in Manado City and the meanings contained in these traditions. The problem in the research is that Chinese New Year celebrations are often just a celebration and not a few ethnic Chinese communities in the city of Manado just carry on without understanding the meaning behind the tradition of Chinese New Year celebrations that have been inherited from her generations. This research uses qualitative methods with techniques such as observation and interviews. Unstructured interviews are independent interviews where the researcher does not use interview guidelines that have been arranged systematically and completely for data collection Sugiyono (2011: 233). The results of research in the field show that behind the traditions of Chinese New Year celebrations carried out by the Chinese ethnic community there are meanings contained in these traditions both from a cultural and religious perspective.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractResearchers need to take data from the spoken text (structured, unstructured, or narrative interviews) to written form for analysis. Typically this is handled through deidentifying the participants and transcribing the data, and is considered the first step in analysis. The accuracy of the transcription plays a role in determining the accuracy of the data that are analyzed and with what degree of dependability. Analysis begins after reviewing the first interview to examine whether participants are responding to the research question related to your area of interest in diabetes, or whether your interview guide needs refining. As each interview is completed, the researcher examines its content to determine what has been learned and what still needs to be discovered or needs elaboration. Moving from raw interviews to evidence-based interpretations requires preparing transcripts so they will be ready to code. Before moving directing to analysis (or coding), it is important to recognize the task of handling the qualitative research data during and after the interview. This paper describes the process of transcription and handling the qualitative data related to diabetes research.

Abstract: Personnel selection is among the most significant decisions in human resource management and Public Administration is no excepection. One of the most frequent methods used in the selection selection is unstructured interviews. In this article, we propose that unstructured interviews not only have almost zero validity in predicting job performance over psychometric tests. We argue that, many times, their use can worsen the selection process. With this in mind, in this article we first review research regarding unstructured interviews, their prevalence in organizations, and the reasons for this prevalence. We also review research regarding some psychometric tests, based on important constructs from industrial and organizational psychology. We also review the results of a previous empirical study we conducted, in which we compared how the decisions of human resource management directors and professionals in organizations can change in the presence of information from unstructured interviews. We found that decisions based on unstructured interviews, when presented together with information from psychometric tests, are more inaccurate and at the same time generate more confidence, exacerbating an illusion of validity and overconfidence. Finally, we propose seven fundamental and practical principles for conducting interviews. Based on this, we conclude that the structured behavioral interview emerges as a clearly superior alternative in the context of Public Administration.

Abstract (sommario):
A great prevalence of psychiatric disorders in epilepsy is well demonstrated, although most studies have used unstructured psychiatric interviews for diagnosis. Here we present a study evaluating the prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities in a cohort of Southern Brazilian patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) using a structured clinical interview. We analyzed 166 patients with TLE regarding neuropsychiatric symptoms through the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV. One hundred-six patients (63.9%) presented psychiatric comorbidities. Mood disorders were observed in 80 patients (48.2%), anxiety disorders in 51 patients (30.7%), psychotic disorders in 14 (8.4%), and substance abuse in 8 patients (4.8%) respectively. Our results agree with literature data where most authors detected mental disorders in 10 to 60% of epileptic patients. This wide variation is probably attributable to different patient groups investigated and to the great variety of diagnostic methods. Structured psychiatric interviews might contribute to a better evaluation of prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities in TLE.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper presents a novel approach, which is based on integrated (automatic/interactive) knowledge acquisition, to rapidly develop knowledge-based systems. Linguistic rules compatible with heuristic expert knowledge are used to construct the knowledge base. A fuzzy inference mechanism is used to query the knowledge base for problem solving. Compared with the traditional interview-based knowledge acquisition, our approach is more flexible and requires a shorter development cycle. The traditional approach requires several rounds of interviews (both structured and unstructured). However, our method involves an optional initial interview, followed by data collection, automatic rule generation, and an optional final interview/rule verification process. The effectiveness of our approach is demonstrated through a benchmark case study and a real-life manufacturing application.

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction: Nurses should be committed to undertake continuing professional development (CPD) courses to advance nursing practice and guarantee lifelong learning. Online CPD programs may allow nurses to fulfil the demand for specialty competency. Aim: This study focuses on utilising online (CPD) activities to develop cardiac nurses’ ability to perform advanced clinical skills. Method: The study was conducted in one of the largest accredited teaching hospitals in South Australia. The department is staffed by a specialised multi-professional team, some of whom have completed specialised cardiac post-graduation diploma courses in order to meet the complex needs of cardiac patients. To keep the team abreast of the latest developments in practice, the in-service education department at local study setting runs several CPD programs for the cardiology department via varied learning modes, such as online CPD programs, classroom learning and bedside-based learning. The nursing team maintains advanced clinical skills through online CPD, orientation programs, and in-service classroom-based courses. Regarding online CPD courses, electrocardiography interpretation and underwater sealing draining management courses are mandatory courses which all registered nurses must complete while working in medical or surgical cardiac wards. Results: The interview process was conducted in five stages: 1. Determining the type of the interview where in such types of qualitative studies the researcher should focus on the fundamental question of the phenomenological inquiry throughout the unstructured, in-depth interview process. 2. Making initial contact where the researcher established a rapport with the participant and prepared them mentally by giving them the participant information sheet. 3. Context of the interview where interviews be conducted in a quiet room in the School of Nursing in order to maintain participant privacy and anonymity, participants requested to conduct the interviews in their work setting. Nonetheless, the researcher ensured that participant privacy and anonymity was upheld. 4. Selecting the lived experience where Each participant was interviewed once. Interview duration was 15 to 30 minutes. The interviews started with a grand tour question. Grand tour questions are very broad questions asked by the interviewer at the early stage of an interview to obtain a description of the event or experience. 5. All interviews were concluded by thanking the participant and offering them the choice to have a copy of their interview transcript to verify what they had said. The researcher wrote an interview summary after listening to the interviews on the same day. The summary was prepared to help the researcher evaluate the amount of data gathered and identify whether the point of data saturation was reached. In addition, writing the summary helped the researcher reflect on the interview and gain an understanding of the participant experience Conclusion This study explained the process of data collection, describing the setting, nature of participants and process of data collection using phenomenological interview. As the human experience is complex, gathering in-depth data should be systematic to ensure that the researcher has obtained the most sufficient data to explore the essence of the experience.
