Abstract (sommario):
TitleUniversity of Wollongong in Dubai: creating a private university in the public interest.Subject areaHigher education leadership and planning.Study level/applicabilityPostgraduate/higher education.Case overviewProfessor Rob Whelan was appointed President of the University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) from the University of Wollongong in Australia (UOW). Professor Whelan brought to the job in Dubai the perspective that public‐good benefits flow from a comprehensive institution engaged with the larger community and these are led by academic staff members who produce research that serves the national interest. To apply this model to UOWD meant a thorough analysis of the organization in terms of both its culture and its broader environment. This case explores the various processes through which a new leader takes stock of an existing institution, identifies the potential for development in a particular direction, draws upon a range of stakeholders to refine the vision and develop it into a strategic plan, gains support for the plan, and then implements change through close collaboration with the institution's constituents.Expected learning outcomesThis case can be used to explore a number of issues in leadership and management including: identifying the various internal and external stakeholders in a complex organization; analysing strategies for mobilization for change, including the assessment of inclusive versus exclusive approaches; reviewing the opportunity costs of change; and assessing types of leadership.Supplementary materialsTeaching notes.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide an update of Resource Sharing services at the University of Wollongong (UOW) Library two years after a complete review was undertaken to provide a financially viable service relevant to the research support needs of University clients. This paper provides an update of the service two years on. Design/methodology/approach – The UOW Library has been attentive to global changes in the resource sharing industry and document supply services. Unmediated resource sharing options are growing and assuming an increasing portion of requests received from clients. UOW’s involvement in new services has focused attention on the value of its collection, particularly the last national copy of a publication. By ensuring these unique titles remain in the collection indefinitely, they can be shared with other libraries through resource sharing arrangements. Ensuring staff workplace health and safety during the ongoing transformation in the delivery of services is an important element in the continued viability of resource sharing at UOW. Findings – The 2011-2013 review of UOW Library Resource Sharing services has resulted in a viable and relevant service that is adaptable to the changing needs of UOW clients and institutional directions into the near future. Unmediated requesting continues to assume a greater share of the requesting workload, though staff expertise is equally important in supporting this service. A future challenge for the UOW Library is the rising cost of postage for the sharing of loans across institutions. Originality/value – This case study demonstrates how an academic library can transform its resource sharing service for ongoing relevance and cost-effectiveness. Taking a holistic view of the service, in terms of people, costs and services, is important to ensure the overall viability of the service.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of the areas of the four-year undergraduate course in Civil Engineering at the University of Wollongong that are relevant to the teaching of material related to space structures. The Civil Engineering course at Wollongong is a general course in civil engineering leading to a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) Degree. The areas covered in this paper refer only to those parts of the undergraduate course with a structural bias, and particularly those areas relevant to pin-jointed space truss behaviour, mechanics and design. Brief mention is made to the early year teaching that is of relevance, and then the attention is given to the basic structural mechanics that forms the basis for project work in the final year. This latter work forms the principal part of the paper.

Abstract (sommario):
In 1998, Burton Clark published his seminal work, 'Creating Entrepreneurial Universities: Organizational Pathways of Transformation' (1998) arising out of an international study of five European Universities: Warwick, Twente, Strathclyde, Chalmers and Joensuu. His study explored the significant research question 'How do universities, by means of entrepreneurial action, go about transforming themselves?' The major findings of the research gave rise to what Clark describes as pathways of transformation and in his view, 'five elements constitute an irreducible minimum'. (Clark 1998, p.5) These are defined as: • A strengthened steering core; • An expanded developmental periphery; • A diversified funding base; • A stimulated academic heartland; and • An integrated entrepreneurial culture. The key research question for this study was defined as follows: Using Clark's (1998) five pathways of transformation, is the UOW an entrepreneurial university? The research, both quantitative and qualitative, was conducted as a case study. The quantitative study involved the use of an online survey and the findings of the sample group represent the totality of staff perception. The qualitative study, using a semi-structured interview program, again focused on the UOW and the extent to which a sample of its senior executive and management staff, perceive the UOW to be an entrepreneurial university. The findings of the research, based upon the case study, supported by the views and perceptions of its staff, support the contention that the UOW is an entrepreneurial university, as characterized by Clark's (1998) five pathways of transformation. However, they also provide insights into the extent to which the UOW adheres to the five pathways of transformation, the critical nature of the leadership role of the Vice-Chancellor, and how different staff constituencies, including gender, perceive the entrepreneurial culture of the UOW.

Abstract (sommario):

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study explores the perspectives of teachers and learners in flexible learning environments in relation to information and learning, and the implications of these perspectives for the design of effective library and information services. It adopted a case study methodology to investigate three flexible learning academic subjects offered at the University of Wollongong in Autumn Semester (March to June) 2000. Using a contextual and document review, teacher and student questionnaires, and in-depth interviews, data were gathered on participant perspectives on the following key areas of research interest: concepts of flexible learning; the flexible learning environment; the role of the teacher; the role of the learner; methods of communication; concepts of information; methods of presenting information; using information resources and services; the role of the librarian; concepts of learning; the learning process; and the relationships between information, learning and knowledge. Interview data were analysed using the constant comparative method to identify conceptual categories and higher-level themes within individual cases as well as collectively across all three cases. The main conclusions of the study were that: (1) the ways in which information and learning are conceived are central to understanding information use as part of the learning process; (2) there are a number of identifiable processes or phases involved in using information to learn; (3) the integration of information resources and communication mechanisms is a major benefit of the online learning environment; and (4) the design of the flexible learning environment influences student approaches to learning and the use of information and learning resources. The implications of the study conclusions for library and information services include the need for librarians to develop an understanding of the relationship between information and learning; the need to encourage active engagement with information, qualitative/deep approaches to learning, and critical and interpretative thinking; the need to integrate library resources, services and communication systems into online learning environments; and the need for librarians to develop their roles as collaborative partners with teachers, as guides and facilitators of student learning, as designers of information environments, and as advocates for the incorporation of information resources and services into flexible learning environments. Suggestions for further research include ongoing studies on information conceptualisation and use within flexible learning environments, and a larger scale phenomenographic study of conceptions of information.

Abstract (sommario):
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the most important long-lived anthropogenic greenhouse gases. Ocean, land and biosphere contribute to take up CO2 emissions, but approximately half of fossil fuel CO2 accumulates in the atmosphere. The study of isotopic composition of CO2 can give useful information for assessing and quantifying the uptake of CO2 in the environmental compartments, as well as for distinguishing natural from anthropogenic carbon in the atmosphere. In this work, an activity for the development of a Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) based method for δ13C-CO2 determination in CO2 in air mixtures is presented. The FTIR can be calibrated by a classical approach based on primary calibration gas standards, but an alternative calibration can be based on the generation of synthetic spectra, by means of radiative transfer calculation codes such as the Multiple Atmospheric Layer Transmission (MALT University of Wollongong, Australia). Another software (B-FOS) developed at the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) allows to interface MALT and the FTIR management software. This calibration approach is fast and reliable and can be used when the classical calibration based on reference gas mixtures might be demanding. The uncertainty obtained for δ13C-CO2 measurements is around 0.1 ‰, at a nominal CO2 mole fraction of 400 μmol mol-1 in air.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The phenomenon of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) for elastically restrained cylindrical structures in cross-flows is relatively well investigated. The utility of this mechanism in harvesting energy from marine current and tidal flows is however arguably still in its infancy. With relatively few moving components, a flow-induced vibration based energy conversion device augers low complexity compared to the commonly employed turbine design. Despite the interest in this concept, a practical device has yet to emerge. It is desirable for optimal system performance to design for a very low mass or mass moment of inertia ratio. The device operating range in particular is maximised below the vortex-induced vibration critical point where an infinite resonant response region is realised. An unfortunate consequence of this requirement is large buoyancy forces that need to be mitigated by gravity-based, suction-caisson or anchor mooring systems. The focus of this paper is the testing of a novel VIV marine current energy-harvesting configuration that utilises a centrally-pivoted horizontal cylinder. The results of experimental investigations, utilising the University of Wollongong fluid mechanics laboratory towing tank, are analysed and presented. A reduced velocity test range of 0 to 27 was covered. Power take-off (PTO) damping ratios spanning from 0.041 to 0.392 were examined in order to determine the optimal conditions and hence the maximum device energy conversion efficiency.

Abstract (sommario):
Co-curricular engagement is an essential a part of the student experience in Australian higher education institutions. Whilst there is wide acknowledgement of the benefits of students participating in co-curricular activities, formally recognising students for the knowledge, skills and experiences that they have gained through co-curricular learning has only recently emerged in the Australian context. This practice paper will describe one Australian university’s approach in developing and implementing a co-curricular recognition framework. UOWx sits at the core of University of Wollongong’s (UOW) student experience, providing holistic and transformational personal development of students. The distinctive features of UOW’s approach include developing a whole of institution approach; embedding the student voice into continuous improvement cycles; and developing an active strategy to embed UOWx with employers and community organisations. This approach has transformed student co-curricular learning at UOW, by increasing the breadth of student engagement and deepening student understanding of the knowledge, skills and experiences students have gained through their co-curricular engagement. Keywords: Co-curricular framework; designing co-curricular recognition; reflection.

Abstract (sommario):
Wollongong’s geographic proximity to the southern sprawl of Sydney, accessible transport and cultural diversity have been an attractor for many inward bound creative migrants, helping it diversify away from its industrial past. Wollongong City Council, understanding the importance of the creative industries, has been very proactive in ensuring that the heart of the city has been well and truly activated by sectors of these industries, while the University of Wollongong and its Innovation Campus have also proved a boon to both specialist and embedded creatives. Wollongong maintains a balance between traditional creatives and newer tech-oriented operatives, most with local, national and international suppliers and clients.
