Abstract (sommario):
The use of spatial analysis tools is on the rise in many academic fields and practical applications. These tools enhance the ability to examine data from spatial perspectives. Though the study of place and space has traditionally been the domain of the field of geography, growing numbers of researchers are turning to these tools in the social sciences and beyond. The University of Toledo has established a unique Ph.D. granting program to encompass the theories, tools, and applications of spatially integrated social science. In the first couple of years of its inception the program has attracted students from different places and diverse backgrounds. It is expected that the program will continue to thrive in attracting diverse students, securing external grants, and positively impacting on the economy of Northwest Ohio. This paper is a personal reflection of the views of the authors on the Ph.D. program in Spatially Integrated Social Science at the University of Toledo two years after its inception in fall 2009. The views, by no means, are of the University of Toledo, its SISS program, or any of the participating departments and faculty members.

Abstract (sommario):
As medical education has become something of a buyer's market, a Midwest medical school and a Texas university are resorting to advertising for students. The Medical College of Ohio in Toledo has taken out ads in 23 Ohio college newspapers urging premed students to consider applying. Meanwhile, the University of Texas System, in a broader appeal, is running TV ads urging young Texans to choose health careers. University of Texas officials hope their ad campaign will help stem a decline in enrollments in the state's medical and related schools, the same trend observed nationally for the past 15 years. Medical-school enrollments declined 37% nationwide between 1974 and 1988, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Abstract (sommario):
• Objective: Several pressure ulcer (PU) risk factors including paralysis and age greater than 70 have been identified, while others such as nutrition are debated. The object of this study is to identify perioperative risk factors that may predict improved outcomes and reduced complications in primary and recurrent PU reconstructions. • Method: A retrospective chart review of patients treated surgically for PUs from 2004 to 2013 at the University of Toledo Medical Center, Toledo, Ohio, US, was completed. Data collected included ulcer and medical history, as well as risk factors, complications and postoperative outcome. Data were statistically analysed for perioperative variances between primary and recurrent ulcers and closure status. • Results: A total of 49 patients with 102 reconstructions were reviewed. Spinal cord injured patients accounted for 90% receiving flap coverage of ulcers. Numerous differences between primary and recurrent ulcers were identified, including ulcer location, patient nutritional status, wound infection, postoperative course and recurrence. Multivariate analysis revealed a flap reconstruction prediction model using creatinine, haematocrit, haemoglobin, and prealbumin that is able to successfully predict closure outcome in 83.6% of cases. • Conclusion: Many factors play a role in the development, course and treatment of PUs. It is vital to understand the role of patient risk factors in the development of PUs, to direct subsequent management and reconstruction, and to prevent future recurrences.

Abstract (sommario):
Based on joint efforts by the Williams County Historical Society and the Laboratories of Ethnoarchaeology at the University of Toledo, thirty-six new sites, including six Western Basin Tradition ceramic sites, have been documented in the tri-state region of northeastern Indiana, northwestern Ohio, and south-central Michigan. Also, data collected from throughout the Western Lake Erie region since 1984 has necessitated several revisions in the 1984 settlement-subsistence model proposed for the Late Woodland Western Basin Tradition populations, ca. 1000–1300 A.D. (Stothers, Graves, and Redmond, 1984). Key changes involve the relative sizes of functionally different site types that form component parts of a larger settlement system, a lack of formal village life, and a new perspective on seasonal patterns of population coalescence and dispersal.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: Ohio remains one of the most afflicted states nationally with 46.3 per 100 000 deaths due to drug overdose. Opioids are commonly administered in emergency departments for the management of pain. Given the high volume of patients presenting with pain, emergency clinicians must be cognizant of responsible opioid dispensing practices. Ohio established guidelines in April 2012 to provide a general approach for responsible opioid prescribing practices in the emergency setting. The purpose of this study assesses clinician opioid dispensing before and after the implementation of the Ohio Opioid Prescribing Guidelines. Methods: The study design used retrospective data analysis of opioid medications ordered by emergency clinicians to be administered in the emergency room between January 1, 2007, to December 31, 2017, at the University of Toledo Medical Center. A segmented regression analysis with an interrupted time series was used to determine impact. Results: All opioid medication usage showed a significant decrease after guideline implementation except for morphine and fentanyl which showed statistically significant increases in administration over time (P < 0.05). Conclusion: There was a significant decrease in the use of opioids since the implementation of the Ohio Opioid Prescribing Guidelines, yet morphine and fentanyl use has generally increased across all age groups. Age demographics frequently receiving opioids in the emergency room have seemed to shift over time as well as specific opioid drugs dispensed for the management of pain in certain age groups. Further study is needed to evaluate the use of opioids prescribed by emergency physicians after discharge from the emergency department.

Abstract (sommario):
One of the leading theoretical astrophysicists of the twentieth century, Lyman Spitzer showed a renaissance or even a classical figure in both his character and personal style. I once speculated that a biographer would some day remark on the importance of Spitzer's early exposure to ancient literature, and his family assured me that he had in fact been strongly influenced throughout his life by classical, especially Latin, models. If ever I have known an individual who fitted the renaissance ideal of the gentleman scholar (based, of course, on earlier Latin archetypes), it was Lyman. The upright bearing, courteous speech, clarity, and total independence of mind were the dress of a person seemingly dropped into our midst from another age. Born in 1914 into a prosperous Toledo, Ohio, commercial family, he later married into the local, still wealthier clan of the Canadays. After attending Scott High School in Toledo and then Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts, he received his BA at Yale in 1935 and then went to Cambridge University for a year (1935–36), where he was influenced by Sir Arthur Eddington FRS and Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar (FRS 1944), who was an almost exact contemporary. Returning to the USA, he received his PhD in 1938 at Princeton, under the legendary Henry Norris Russell ForMemRS. Spitzer then went briefly to Harvard as a postdoctoral fellow, followed by a move to Yale, where he was appointed as instructor in 1939. It was shortly after moving to Yale that he married Doreen D. Canaday, herself a Bryn Mawr graduate, a totally charming and strong-willed woman with whom he raised a family of four children born between 1942 and 1954: Nicholas C., Dionis C., Sarah L. and Lydia S.

Abstract (sommario):
The present research aimed to conduct a genre analysis of native (English) and non-native (Iranian) English speakers’ M.A theses of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) students to find any significant differences in their Discussion section structures according to the constitutive moves and steps. It also aimed to explore and compare the distribution of obligatory, conventional and optional moves and steps in the two corpuses. To this aim, 20 theses were randomly selected from well-known English Speaking Universities (Portland State University, University of Toledo, Ohio State University and University of Birmingham) to compare with 20 theses from Iran. The move analysis model by Yang and Allison (2003) was employed, which was specifically used in Applied Linguistics. Chi-squared test was run to make the comparison. The results revealed statistically significant differences between the genre followed in the Discussion sections of Iranian and non-Iranian TEFL M.A. theses. The most significant divergence was found in summarizing the study. English-speaking TEFL thesis writers tended to summarize the study in Discussion section significantly more than Iranian writers. Statistically significant differences were also found in the distribution of obligatory, conventional and optional moves. English-speaking writers indicated limitations in the Discussion section significantly more than Iranian writers. This shows Iranian TEFL M.A. writers are more reserved to discuss limitations. These results can be used effectively in M.A. courses of TEFL to raise students’ awareness and prevent them from overstating or understating certain constituent parts of the Discussion section in theses.

Abstract (sommario):
Liberato J. A. DiDio (1920?2004) was one of the most prominent figures of anatomy belonging to the 20th century?s second half and an open-minded man. In 1984, during the era of communism in Yugoslavia, he opened the doors of the Medical College of Ohio (MCO) in Toledo, OH, USA, to a Serbian doctor. During the troubled times for people and anatomists in Serbia in 1994, he saved their association from being expelled from the International Federation of Anatomical Associations. In 1999, only a few months after the bombing of Yugoslavia, he helped them to get the organization of the XVIII International Symposium on Morphological Sciences in 2005, the meeting of the leaders in the field. Serbian anatomists and clinicians proved that he was right when considering them on a par with their peers in the international anatomical and medical community. Professor DiDio first showed talent with Gold Medal ? top graduate at his high school, and La Royale Award (Graduation Golden Ring) ? top graduate MD. He was trained in Brazil, Italy, and the US. He was the Founding Chairman ? Department of Topographical Anatomy, Faculdade de Ciencias Medicas, Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil; Head of Gross and Surgical Anatomy, Northwestern University Medical, Dental, and Graduate Schools; Founding Chairman, Department of Anatomy, MCO; Professor Emeritus at the age of 70 (1990), Assistant to the President of the MCO, Consultant to the President and the Emeritus Dean (1992?2004). Abstract (sommario):
Background: In 2016, Ohio was home to 2 of the top 10 cities with opioid overdoses in the United States. Dayton ranked first, and Toledo held the tenth slot. In response to the opioid epidemic, the Toledo Naloxone Outreach Program (TNOP) was developed to provide naloxone to underserved patients at a student-run free clinic. Methods: The TNOP takes place weekly at 2 locations in the greater Toledo area. Patients are asked to fill out an anonymous survey and given a brief training session by a health care professional student. Patients are then sent home with a free naloxone kit. Additionally, health care professional students were surveyed on their confidence of acquiring a substance use history and knowledge of local services for patients and family members of those experiencing addiction during the "train the trainer" event. The health care professional student survey utilized a 1-5 Likert scale and was analyzed using paired student t tests. Results: Survey results from patients indicate that a majority had not received nalox one prior to the training, indicating the service was expanding access to an otherwise underserved population. Results from the survey administered before and after health care professional student training sessions reflect a significant increase in confidence eliciting a substance abuse history and providing patients and/or family members with addiction resources in the community. Conclusion: The TNOP has provided the community of Toledo with 2 additional outreach locations for receiving free naloxone kits with proper education. Currently, TNOP is in the process of expanding the outreach program to additional student-run free clinics in Ohio.

Abstract (sommario):
Toledo, Ohio, U.S. residents on four streets in an area with mature street trees, including ash, scheduled for removal as a result of attack by emerald ash borer were surveyed to determine their attitudes toward their street trees. Toledo is in the process of removing some 5,000 trees. Large trees with a variety of summer and fall foliar characteristics were highly valued suggesting that residents would be satisfied with a mix of species rather than planting each street to a single species. The fact that their trees canopied the street was also important to residents and is characteristic of larger urban trees. Residents would be pleased if replacements were planted before removing existing trees. Flowers were not a significant concern for residents. In Toledo, as it is in many communities, the primary maintenance concern regarding trees in this survey is the potential damage to sidewalks.

Abstract (sommario):
Human trafficking is a multibillion-dollar industry and Toledo, Ohio has been identified as a hub of human trafficking activity. Current literature identified that healthcare providers working in emergency departments, urgent care centers, and physician offices (nurses, physician assistants, and physicians) are in positions to identify victims of human trafficking and help with rescue. Current curricular guidance for healthcare education did not include specific information on indicators of human trafficking and resources to assist with rescue and recovery. The human trafficking awareness study was completed to determine if healthcare providers working in nine Toledo, Ohio area emergency departments had knowledge of the indicators of human trafficking and of the resources to help victims. The study design also afforded the opportunity to provide healthcare workers in these organizations’ information about indicators of human trafficking and local, state and national resources to help victims with rescue and recovery.

Abstract (sommario):
Child sex trafficking and adult women involved in street-based prostitution are two problems affecting the city of Toledo, Ohio. While various agencies worked independently to address these problems, there was no collaborative effort. We decided to organize a year-long roundtable that included people from Toledo-based social service, criminal justice, and health care systems, as well as concerned citizens, church groups, and survivors of prostitution. Our intent was to develop responses that were specific and sensitive not only to the needs of prostituted women and trafficked teens, but also to service providers and members of the community. In this article, we report on our project, its accomplishments, and lessons learned.

Abstract (sommario):
Streptococcus pneumonia is a gram-positive bacteria most commonly associated with respiratory tract infections such as acute otitis media, sinusitis, and pneumonia. While a common cause of upper respiratory infections, the current Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) guidelines on Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) do not cite S. pneumoniae as a cause for UTIs in children. In addition, previous research associating S. pneumonia with UTIs has been scarce. We report the case of a three-year-old girl presenting to the emergency room with abdominal pain, vomiting, and fever. Her clinical picture was consistent with right sided pyelonephritis. A urine analysis (UA) was conducted which showed trace leukocyte esterase, 150mg/dL ketones, 21-50 WBCs, and negative nitrites. A blood culture returned positive for Streptococcus pneumoniae along with right kidney hydronephrosis on ultrasound. This patient presented with a full clinical picture of pyelonephritis, fever, leukocytosis, elevated CRP and Procalcitonin levels, and later found to be S. pneumoniae positive. Although the urine culture did not grow any definitive single bacteria as a causative agent, due to the presentation of pyelonephritis along with CVA tenderness, dysuria, and a positive blood culture, we conclude the patient was exhibiting urosepsis due to S. pneumoniae. Upon discovering previous case reports noting S. pneumoniae as a possible agent for UTIs, we believed this bacterium to be contributing to the patient’s symptoms. While S. pneumoniae has only been a rarely reported cause of UTIs, we believe there is sufficient evidence that demonstrates S. pneumoniae to at least be considered a possible contributing cause of UTIs, especially if the patient has a coinciding septic picture. Abstract (sommario):
Wind speed is the principal climatic element that drives the Marmaton season in West African sub region. It drives the season by conveying huge amount of dust across the Northeastern Nigeria. The presence of dust in the atmosphere brought by the Northeast trade winds during the Harmattan season plays a vital role in absorbing and scattering solar radiation. The study examines the spatial and temporal variations of wind speed in Northeastern Nigeria during the Harmattan season with the sole aim of ascertaining its variability, patterns and trends from1984 to 2014. Descriptive and statistics such as mean, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, and time series analysis with ArcGIS 10.3 was used in examine the temporal and spatial variations of wind speed from 1984–2014 in six synoptic stations of Northeastern Nigeria. The findings show that wind speed varied both temporally and spatially in the last three decades. The pattern of variations in the six synoptic stations shows rising trends within the study years. It was also found that latitude playing a crucial role in determining the speed of the wind in the study area and as the speed of the wind increases with increasing latitude. Abstract (sommario):
AbstractEarly on August 2, 2014, in the city of Toledo, Ohio, a media alert informed the public that traces of microcystin, a hazardous toxin, had been detected in the drinking water. The warning stated that residents should not drink, boil, or even touch the contaminated water. A water crisis of this magnitude was recognized to pose a potentially serious and significant impact on patient care and safety in health care environments. ProMedica Toledo Hospital’s Emergency Operation Plan addressed 3 critical issues: safe water availability, alternate cleaning solutions, and preparations for a prolonged crisis. This report details some of the lessons learned throughout the response to the crisis: particularly, because the impact was county-wide which affected other hospitals who used the same vendors, alternate water sources should have been secured in advance; the courier service was vital to delivery of supplies and moving equipment to alternate areas for sterilization processes; and finally, communication with staff and patients was jeopardized by external media outlets. Changes to the emergency plan considering these unanticipated aspects proved useful in a later incident and should be considered by all health care facilities as water emergency policies and procedures are created and reviewed.
Archaeological researches developed by the University of Alcalá de Henares in Huecas (Toledo) have provided interesting conclusions about the population sequence and socioeconomic transformations in the inner zone of Iberian Peninsula during Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods. Burial mounds, artificial caves and spectaculars archaeological materials have been recupered in succesive seasons of excavation. The construction of a collector and a puryfing plant for the village of Huecas allowed the intensification of the investigations and the drawing of several pictures to present some relevant archaeological data. This paper shows the 3D interpretation of some archaeological data from Huecas.

Abstract (sommario):
Research indicates that kinship care in the child welfare system is increasing each year. Most child welfare agencies, however, do not provide adequate services to relative caregivers. The needs assessment presented here analyzed the service needs of a representative sample of relative caregivers at Lucas County Children Services in Toledo, Ohio. Field interviews were used to gather qualitative data. Results indicated that relatives needed tangible items such as beds, food, and clothing in the initial stages of placement. Ongoing needs included information regarding case progress and system procedures, respite, day care, and counseling for the child. The relatives recommended developing a kinship advisory council to assist the agency in policymaking and a respite program for relative caregivers.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This article presents the Responsio in quaestione de muliere sarracena transeunte ad statum et ritum iudaicum (1451) by Alonso Fernández de Madrigal, “El Tostado” (1410–55), as a rich source for the study of conversion across minority groups. A trial conducted before the archbishop of Toledo concerning a Muslim woman turned Jew by her lover in Talavera de la Reina (Spain) caused a scandal in Christian society. As one of the most outstanding legal scholars at the University of Salamanca, Madrigal established the right of the archbishop of Toledo to judge an issue involving the two minorities and decided in favor of the woman returning to her faith of origin, instead of imposing the death penalty. While conversion superseded issues of illicit sexual relations, gender acted as a mitigating circumstance. This article will also consider how the three communities contributed to the survival of “cohabitation,” defined by Madrigal as social peace, and the preservation of the status of the different religions living together in Castile.
