Abstract (sommario):
Many nursing schools and public schools are facing various challenges including a lack of resources. Schools of nursing strive to provide meaningful clinical experiences despite the challenge of a limited supply of quality placements. Similarly, public schools are expected to provide more nursing services at a time when many school nurses already are overloaded. For example, new state legislation placed additional responsibilities (regarding epinephrine auto-injectors and cardiac emergency response plans) on school nurses in Michigan. Establishing a partnership between the University of Michigan–Flint and the Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) allowed RN to BSN students in the community health nursing course to complete enriching clinical experiences at selected GISD schools. While gaining valuable clinical knowledge, these nursing students helped school nurses comply with the new legislation’s requirements. This partnership benefitted the nursing students, the school nurses, and the schools that served as clinical placement sites. Nursing school administrators and faculty members should consider pursuing similar clinical placement partnerships that could be advantageous for students and local communities.

Abstract (sommario):
The University of Michigan School of Nursing and the Health System partnered to develop an undergraduate clinical education model as part of a larger project to advance clinical education, practice, and scholarship with education serving as the clinical bridge that anchors all three areas. The clinical model includes clusters of clinical units as the clinical home for four years of a student's education, clinical instruction through team mentorship, clinical immersion, special skills preparation, and student portfolio. The model was examined during a one-year pilot with junior students. Stakeholders were largely positive. Findings showed that Clinical Faculty engaged in more role modeling of teaching strategies as Mentors assumed more direct teaching used more clinical reasoning strategies. Students reported increased confidence and competence in clinical care by being integrated into the team and the Mentor's assignment. Two new full time faculty roles in the Health System support education, practice, and research.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Objectives This study aims to investigate what factors correlate with osteopathic medical students’ preparedness to provide care for the LGBTQ+ community through a multi-institutional survey. Context This is one of the few formal research projects to assess the impact of LGBTQ+ medical education on osteopathic students’ comfort level with caring for the community. Methods This study was approved by the IRB at Western University of Health Sciences, Pomona, CA on 11/19/2020. An 18-question survey was created regarding the exposure to the LGBTQ+ population and healthcare education before and after attending osteopathic medical schools. The anonymous survey was electronically distributed at Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine Pacific and Pacific Northwest, Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine, Touro University, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine between 1/6/21 and 5/8/21. The survey information was statistically analyzed via SAS University edition. Results The survey had 441 responses: 63% were female, 34% were male, and 3% selected other gender identities. From 441 responses to the survey, 378 responses were analyzed using a logistics regression model to comprehensively model a binary-dependent variable for the students’ preparedness. Students knowing the meaning of the acronym LGBTQ+ (p =0.04) and actively engaging in extracurricular activities for the LGBTQ+ population (p =0.01) showed the strongest correlation based on the logistic regression analysis. Additionally, Chi-square results identified 6 independent variables associated with students’ preparedness to care for the LGBTQ+ population: being a second year or a third year osteopathic medical student (p <0.01), having opportunities to learn about the LGBTQ+ population in college (p <0.01), having a formal presentation about LGBTQ+ health in medical school (p <0.01), the medical school offering extracurricular activities about the LGBTQ+ population (p <0.01), knowing what the LGBTQ+ acronym stands for (p =0.01), and actively being involved in extracurricular activities concerning the LGBTQ+ community (p=0.03). Conclusions Our study indicates that medical students’ educational exposure through college and medical school is a more correlating influencing factor for their preparedness to care for the LGBTQ+ population in comparison with student’s gender, hometown size, or socioeconomic, geographical, and religious background. Future studies to objectively identify medical students’ preparedness and experience with LGBTQ+ patients, as well as studying effective curricula for filling in knowledge gaps, will be necessary.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Homebound older adults represent an understudied population who are at greater risk of losing hand strength and manipulation skills that, in turn, can lead to increased disability and cognitive declines (Dayanidhi and Valero-Cuevas, 2014). The Hands and Health at Home program was developed through a partnership with the University of Michigan’s School of Kinesiology and Michigan Medicine’s Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels program to demonstrate the feasibility of an intergenerational approach to address unmet needs of Meals on Wheels recipients. Undergraduate movement science student trainers were paired with a client who they visited twice weekly for 5 weeks. Students received training, including mock training scenarios, from an interprofessional team with backgrounds in social work, nursing, and neurorehabilitation. Home training protocols were developed using commercially available games and occupational therapy tools with the aim of improving hand function and facilitating socialization. Pre- and post-assessments included hand strength and dexterity, and client-reported measures of physical function and self-efficacy. Feedback from clients and students was overwhelmingly positive with several students indicating that the experience had stimulated interest in pursuing gerontology careers. Changes in quantitative assessments were variable across clients although pinch strength increased significantly in the non-dominant hand (p<0.02) and was predictive of measures of self-efficacy (r=.78, p<0.02). To our knowledge, this pilot program is the first of its kind and demonstrates the value of an intergenerational approach aimed at improving quality of life in Meals on Wheels clients, and may be of benefit for other underserved older members of the community.

Abstract (sommario):
OBJECTIVES/GOALS: The extent that Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) programs offer resources accessible online for training in community-engaged research (CEnR) core competencies is unknown. This study cataloged CEnR resources accessible online from CTSAs and mapped resources to CEnR core competencies. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: Eight domains of CEnR core competencies were identified: knowledge/perceptions of CEnR; personal traits necessary for CEnR; knowledge of/relationships with communities; training for performing CEnR; CEnR methods; program evaluation; resource sharing and communication; and dissemination and advocacy. A systematic review of CEnR resources accessible online from CTSAs was conducted between July 2018 and May 2019. Resource content was independently reviewed by two reviewers and scored for inclusion of each domain of CEnR core competencies. Domain scores across all resources and inter-rater reliability in scoring domains were assessed using descriptive statistics and Cohen’s kappa coefficients. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: Overall, 214 resources available from 24 CTSAs were eligible for full review. Scoring discrepancies for at least one domain within a resource initially occurred in 51% of resources. “CEnR methods” (50.5%; 108 of 214) and “Knowledge of/relationships with the community” (40.2%; 86 of 214) were most frequently addressed and “Program evaluation” (12.1%; 26 of 214) and “Dissemination and advocacy” (11.2%; 24 of 214) were least frequently addressed domains. Additionally, challenges were noted in navigating CTSA websites to access CEnR resources, and CEnR competency nomenclature was not standardized. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE OF IMPACT: Our findings guide CEnR stakeholders to identify CEnR resources accessible online and gaps to address in CEnR resource development. Standardized nomenclature for CEnR competencies is needed for effective CEnR resource classification. Uniform organization of CTSA websites may maximize navigability. CONFLICT OF INTEREST DESCRIPTION: In addition to the funding information listed previously (see above), within the last three years, R.J. Piasecki has been employed as: Project Coordinator, CEnR Online Learning Project, Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (Current) Temporary Employee (Doctoral Student Intern), Michigan State University Institute for Health Policy (Current) Clinical RN, Intrastaff at the Johns Hopkins Health System (Past) Research Data Analysis Assistant, Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services (Past - contracted)

Abstract (sommario):
The Mitchell Scarlett Teaching and Learning Collaborative (MSTLC) is a vigorous, six-year-old partnership between two Title I schools — Mitchell Elementary School and Scarlett Middle School in Ann Arbor, Mich. — and the teacher education program at the University of Michigan. MSTLC was formed between educators who had related but quite different problems to solve: As the schools began to collaborate in 2010, the Ann Arbor Public Schools needed to address the achievement gap in its two lowest SES and lowest-achieving schools relative to other district schools, and the University of Michigan needed a school site where teaching interns could learn to teach diverse students and where it could implement and refine its newly reformed, practice-based elementary teacher education curriculum.

Abstract (sommario):
A bit of background to set the stage, if you’ll indulge me. Growing up in West Bloomfield, Michigan, I was never overly ambitious, nor did I have any lofty academic goals. In particular, I never had any desire to go to law school or, for that matter, to become a lawyer. I come from a family of trial attorneys and it never interested me much. I was a numbers person and didn’t enjoy a lot of deep reading and essay writing (somewhat ironic as I’m writing this for a law journal). But when I started in public accounting and developed a strong interest in tax, I realized I could do much more with a law degree than only a CPA. At that point, with good but not great grades from Michigan undergraduate business school and good but not great LSAT scores, as well as a desire to go to law school in Michigan for cost reasons, I applied to Wayne State University Law School and was accepted. Much to my surprise, I really enjoyed law school and was very happy at Wayne. Also, I ended up with straight As and was tied for first in my class. It seemed like I had found my groove, so at that point, I decided I should apply to transfer to the University of Michigan Law School, and I was thrilled to be accepted. Straight off, I elected any tax and business courses that I could find. Which leads me, finally, to Professor Kahn. My first tax course was personal income tax with Professor Kahn. I was a bit intimidated, and for good reason. He had written numerous books that were essential to the study of tax law and he was somewhat of a legend in the history of the University of Michigan Law School. My best friend’s dad had Professor Kahn twenty plus years before I did, and I had heard a lot about him. As it turned out, Professor Kahn was also brilliant, funny and made what could be a dry topic very engaging. I remember the first time he called on me like it was yesterday. He seemed to like my thought process and my answer. It was a huge relief.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper reports the results of a 1997–98 survey designed to explore the careers of the University of Michigan Law School's minority graduates from the classes of 1970 through 1996, and of a random sample of Michigan Law School's white alumni who graduated during the same years. It is to date the most detailed quantitative exploration of how minority students fare after they graduate from law school and enter law practice or related careers. The results reveal that almost all of Michigan Law School's minority graduates pass a bar exam and go on to have careers that appear successful by conventional measures. In particular, the survey indicates that minority graduates (defined so as to include graduates with African American, Latino, and Native American backgrounds) are no less successful than white graduates, whether success is measured by the log of current income, self-reported satisfaction, or an index of service contributions. Also, although an admissions index that combines LSAT scores and undergraduate grade-point average is a significant predictor of law school grades, it does not predict career success on any of our three outcome measures. Michigan is a highly selective law school; our results may not generalize to people who have graduated from other law schools.

Abstract (sommario):
It is one of my great regrets that I never really got to know Professor Joseph Sax personally. I joined the faculty at the University of Michigan Law School well over a decade after Sax departed our halls for the University of California at Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law. I met him on one occasion several years ago, when he gave an engaging workshop at Michigan on governance issues around Colorado River water allocation, complete with a detailed map of the watershed. I am exceptionally fortunate, however, to occupy a chair named for him. This is not only because of his major contributions to the creation of environmental law, but because—even viewed at a distance—his career, accomplishments, and legacy are a model of what it can mean to realize one’s potential as a legal scholar. The numerous achievements in environmental law that made Sax a giant in his field have been widely recited elsewhere: his scholarship on the public trust doctrine and on citizen suits was path-breaking, and his scholarship on takings law was frequently cited in the Supreme Court. He was awarded the Blue Planet Prize, sometimes called the Nobel Prize for the environmental sciences, was named a Distinguished University Professor here at Michigan, and wrote an influential environmental protection statute for the State of Michigan. His contributions to law and the environment are legion; later in life he expanded his focus to cultural treasures as well as environmental ones.

Abstract (sommario):
Young adolescents, age 10–15 years, have increasing psychosocial and biomedical health care needs, yet are some of the lowest users of conventional health services. In eastern North Carolina, school-based health centers (SBHCs) provide primary health care to thousands of school-age children in the most rural, medically underserved areas. SBHCs receive reimbursement from local, state, and private funding sources and their viability depends on the demonstration of outcomes. Using the Guidelines for Adolescent Preventive Services (GAPS) assessment tool, an SBHC–university nursing partnership evaluated the use of preventive health services by fifth and sixth grade students ( n = 690). Findings suggest that the vast majority of early adolescents needed a referral for a physical exam, nutrition, mental health, or health education services. This article describes key components for a successful SBHC–university nursing partnership that can evaluate and improve existing school health programs.

Abstract (sommario):
One of the major contributing factors to the Black-White achievement gap is school context. While many factors can affect academic achievement amongst Black youth, school climate and inter-racial relations are among the root causes which impact Black students’ development. In this qualitative study, we conducted secondary analysis of existing data consisting of interview transcripts and focus group discussions held in 2013 with 21 Black students who attended a public charter high school in Michigan. Open access data were downloaded from the University of Michigan Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) database. We analyzed qualitative data for themes and constructs related to school context and such influences on Black youth development. The following three constructs were identified: racial identity of Black youth, the impact of teachers on Black students’ racial identity and development, and lastly, exploring the dominant culture of the U.S. education system. For researchers, this data highlights a need for more studies on the intersection of race, school environment, and youth development. For administrators and policy makers, the results emphasize the need for investment and engagement in the daily experiences of Black students, reducing racism, and increasing diversity of curriculum. Teachers and school administrators may benefit from specialized training to better address cultural, educational, and developmental needs of Black youth in the context of their role in school.

Abstract (sommario):
Lempert, Chambers, and Adams's superb new study of the careers of minority and white graduates of the University of Michigan Law School will come as welcome news to those who value diversity on this nation's college and professional school campuses. Alongside the Bowen-Box study (1998), to which the authors link their work, the Michigan data provide powerful evidence of the many benefits of affirmative action for both minority and majority students, as well as for a constituency that is often overlooked in the debate over affirmative action—namely, the people these aspiring professionals are intended to serve. More important, the authors' careful analysis reveals what many have long suspected. LSAT scores and undergraduate GPAs “seem to have no relationship to success after law school, whether success is measured by earned income, career satisfaction, or service contributions” (Lempert, Chambers, and Adams 2000, 401).

Abstract (sommario):
Lempert, Chambers, and Adams's study of the careers of three generations of students of color admitted to the University of Michigan Law School fills several important gaps in our knowledge about the consequences and implications of affirmative action protocols in law school admission. First, it provides empirical data for the argument that conventional test-based admission policies both mask and support deep flaws in the way we allocate opportunity and privilege.
