Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this study is to improve the utilization of walk-in tutors at the University of Dayton. Design/methodology/approach This paper discusses the application of mixed methods participatory action research with the use of the lean six sigma (LSS) define-measure-analyze-improve-control (DMAIC) methodology combined with discrete event simulation to improve the tutoring processes at the University of Dayton. Findings The impact of these improvements provided a great balance between tutor utilization and student wait time, and as a result, an increase in pay was negotiated for tutors. Additionally, two schools within the University, Engineering and Business, have seen the value of the tutoring for their students and have provided additional financial support for tutoring services. Specifically, these schools now have dedicated by-appointment tutors for their students. Originality/value Incorporating simulation within the LSS methodology provides a “prototype” simulation of the potential solutions prior to changing the process in the real world. This approach can minimize the risk of implementing solutions that are costly or ineffective. The improvement of increased tutor pay helped to demonstrate the university’s commitment to tutors and tutoring. Through continuous improvement efforts, the tutoring department has tripled the number of courses that they support through these enhanced relationships, improved utilization and the overall culture and work environment. The LSS methodology and tools combined with discrete event simulation can be used as a guide for improving other repetitive processes within the university.

Abstract (sommario):
This article is dedicated to the use of the project method in musical and regional studies of the university students. The research was based on years of experience of teachers and students of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education "Vologda State University". Specifically, two types of student projects carried out in the course of studying the discipline "Musical culture of the Vologda region" were analysed: firstly, group projects related to the search for materials about musical life in periodicals of previous years, and secondly, individual projects based on verbal history methods. On the one hand, students’ projects are aimed at the development of the necessary professional competencies, and on the other hand, they contribute to the gradual filling of substantial gaps in the musical history of Vologda. Similarities are identified between the project method and the concept of learning by doing where each student is positioned as an active and creative subject of study. In addition, this research highlights a significant educational potential of music and local history work.

Abstract (sommario):
In 2014, the Marian Library at the University of Dayton completed a long overdue revision of its collection development policy. The new document more clearly defined the scope of the library’s collections, and was intended to guide new acquisition decisions. However, this new document had the unexpected benefit of providing a framework for deselection projects that enabled preservation and improved access to the collections. This paper will discuss and analyze two of these projects, and demonstrate how the revised collection development policy laid the foundation for successful deselection outcomes. In the first case study, legacy collections of genre-based ephemera were heavily weeded to remove photocopies, internet printouts, duplicates, and other out-of-scope materials. Both the challenges and benefits of weeding legacy reference files will be discussed. The second case study will examine a comprehensive review of the library’s inactive periodical holdings, consisting of over five hundred titles that were largely uncatalogued. Removing titles outside of the library’s collection scope transformed the collection into a manageable project for the cataloging staff to tackle. This formerly hidden collection, including rare periodicals not found elsewhere in the United States, is now in the process of being cataloged. Both projects transformed local practices and improved utilization of the library’s limited resources in staffing, time, space, and funding. Faced with legacy practices that compromised physical and intellectual control of materials, librarians leveraged a well-defined collection development policy to undertake two successful deselection projects. The policy was used to justify and guide deselection, ultimately improving both preservation and access.

Abstract (sommario):
After the fall of east orientated political system and coming of the pluralistic system in the Yugoslav federation, the nationalisms that claimed to dominate Yugoslavia, such as Serbian, Croatian and Slovenian nationalism came to the surface, which also led to the overthrow of Yugoslavia. Following the abolition of Kosovo's limited autonomy of 1974, in March 1989, the Milosevic Serb regime during the 1990s imposed violent measures in all Kosovo institutions by removing Albanian workers from their jobs. Thus, Kosovo, Albanians were expelled collectively from the education process in the Albanian language, and left school and university facilities. Efforts to reach an agreement between Albanians and Serbian representatives for education during 1992 were unsuccessful. In these difficult contexts, the parallel education system of Kosovo Albanians was organized. In these difficult circumstances, students and Albanian students continued learning outside school facilities. After ignoring the Kosovo problem in the peace agreement reached in Dayton for Bosnia, the dissatisfaction with the peace policy led by Dr. Ibrahim Rugova grew all over Kosovo. In these circumstances, professors and students with vision began to talk about the organization of peaceful protests against the Serbian regime. After a long process, a new student movement took place at the University of Prishtina, which marks the beginning of the great protest on 1 October 1997. In this paper, we analyse the attitudes of international diplomacy with a special emphasis on the West in relation to this movement following the 1 October 1997 peace protests in Kosovo.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper examines the schooling of foreign students, holders of the scholarships awarded by the Ministry of Education of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes/Yugoslavia, at the University of Belgrade between the two World Wars. The first competitions were opened mid 1920s, with those countries which aided the schooling of Yugoslav students at their respective universities being eligible to apply. During the 1930s student exchange continued, in an apparently more extensive and organized manner, only to be extended at the end of the period under review to include countries with which the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, in accordance with the change of foreign policy orientation, established close political and economic relations. Thus, in the beginning, students from France, Great Britain, Czechoslovakia and Poland came to study in Belgrade, whereas, during the years before World War II, students also came from Turkey, Germany and Italy. Scholarship holders most often worked on developing their knowledge of Serbo-Croatian-Slovenian, studied literature and Yugoslav culture in general. Many of them chose to study history, whether as part of their undergraduate or specialist studies. They are the particular focus of this study. The paper is based on unpublished archival sources, periodicals and relevant historiographic literature.

AbstractUsing the example of the contacts between The Netherlands and the university theologian and educationalist from Heidelberg, F. H. C. Schwarz (1766-1837), this article demonstrates that intensive personal academic exchange existed already in the early 19th century: It included the reading of scientific literature in foreign languages, book reviews in special periodicals, translation projects, visits across borders, membership of academic societies, scholarships for foreign students and sometimes even offers of chairmanships to scientists of other nations. Even though international research projects were not known at the time, academic contacts did exist and were mostly achieved through correspondence – despite the limitations – as well as travel.

Abstract (sommario):
The article analyzes Vasily Zhukovsky’s magazine Muraveynik (Anthill) and proves that it combines features of both an educational and a “circle” magazine. The starting point for Muraveynik was the educational context. But, unlike Sobiratel ’, Muraveynik had its educational nature smoothed and supplemented with “circle” features. The concept of the magazine implied cooperation between adult, eminent teachers of literature (Zhukovsky, who actually took over the duties of the editor-inchief of Muraveynik, and Pletnev, who became his assistant) and their very young students. The status of Muraveynik as a “circle” magazine was emphasized by its subtitle. Traditionally, researchers see this subtitle as a reference to the Arzamas circle. However, Muraveynik took the ideal of moral brotherhood from the Arzamas heritage, rather than game. In this sense, the conceptions of Muraveynik were closer to the “serious” circles originating in boarding schools, which also strongly influenced Zhukovsky: the Assembly of Noble Pupils of University Boarding School, the Friendly Literary Society. The Moscow Noble Boarding School strongly encouraged students’ literary creative works, their compositions and translations were constantly published in the school’s editions. In fact, when conceiving Muraveynik, Zhukovsky turned to this experience. He hoped to form around the magazine a friendly community uniting teachers and students in the field of literature. These hopes were not realized. Too young an age, a specific social affiliation and life priorities associated with it, and, finally, personal inclinations and abilities did not allow Zhukovsky’s students to respond to his life-building message. The students perceived Muraveynik more as part of the school routine than as an exciting intellectual adventure. Most of the “children’s” texts published in Muraveynik were not related to free creativity, but to the educational process and were often exercises performed as homework or class assignments. But in his own materials Zhukovsky actively tried to involve the “circle” context and even the life-building context. In this, he follows Mikhail Muravyov, who used the same strategy in Obitatel’ predmestiya (Suburban Dweller). As part of this “circle” strategy, Zhukovsky filled his texts in Muraveynik with motifs and allusions that build up two leading themes - idyllic and chivalrous. They were connected to each other in the life-building ideal of the chivalrous idyll. The author declares no conflicts of interests.

Abstract (sommario):
This publication continues a series of author's research devoted to periodicals that appeared at the dawn of the modern history of Ukraine, when, as a result of the destruction of the Russian Empire, the construction of the Ukrainian national state took place. The presented article raises the problem of the activities of leading higher educational institutions in the territory of the then Ukraine, in particular, the University of St. Vladimir in Kiev, the Technological Institute of Emperor Alexander III in Kharkov, the Katerinoslav Mining Institute, Kharkov University, Kiev and Kharkov Commercial Institutions, etc. The study used collections of scientific papers compiled in 1917—1919. scientists and employees of these institutions. Based on the author’s content analysis of periodicals published in the mentioned educational institutions, the author came to the following conclusions: the higher education system of revolutionary Ukraine at that time still remained under the ideological influence of Russia (either tsarist or republican); The faculty of these institutions actively resisted the policy of Ukrainization proclaimed by the Ukrainian Central Rada; in educational institutions founded during the imperial rule, even under conditions of radical revolutionary changes, the relevant university traditions continued to prevail (fraternity, charitable contributions, personal scholarships in support of various categories of students); Higher educational institutions have become a place of concentration of pro-Russian forces in Ukraine. Against the background of these politically dangerous and highly undesirable analytical statements for the Ukrainian national institutions, it should be emphasized that these higher educational institutions remained a powerful center for the development of science in Ukraine. The study was conducted on the materials of the Book Chamber of Ukraine.

Abstract (sommario):
The review is written on a 2019 book Samizdat in the USSR: Texts and Lives by Yu.A. Rusina. The author of the book discusses a relevant problem of the recent history of the country and analyses the phenomenon of samizdat (self-publishing) in the second part of the 20th c. Three main definitions in the conception of samizdat are given: samizdat as (1) a cultural phenomenon of “another”, “different” culture which supplements official culture; (2) a phenomenon of self-organization of society in the cultural sphere, self-reflection of society and its informational activity; (3) a historical source, which is very important for studying dissent and the dissident movement in the Soviet Union. Rusina is investigating the second and third definitions of samizdat. She consistently analyses samizdat: open letters and appeals, document digests, periodicals, court proceedings. The analysis shows figures and fates of people disagreeable with the regime, for instance, A. Ginzburg, Yu. Daniel, A. Sinyavsky, the disgraced General P.G. Grigorenko, V. Bukovsky, V. Rutminsky, and others. A separate section of the book is devoted to periodicals, journals which were particularly important for the development of opposition movements, dissemination of opinions and information, and for legal and humanitarian education. Rusina thoroughly examines Chronicle of Current Events, sociopolitical, national, and religious journals Political Diary, Obshchestvennye Problemy [Social Issues], Veche, Vestnik Spaseniya [Messenger of Salvation], Exodus, Herald of Exodus, The White Book of Exodus, and others. She analyses not only metropolitan manifestations of dissent but also samizdat in province: student literary and artistic-journalistic periodicals that published works of students of the Ural State University. The book is interesting and significant by itself and also as a source for the following historical and philological studies of the opposition movement in the USSR.

Abstract (sommario):
Over the past twenty years, nearly all job growth in the United States has emerged from new companies and organizations with assumedly innovative products, services, and practices. Yet, the nurturing of student creative thinking and problem solving is infrequent in engineering education. Inherent to developing these creativity skills and attributes is the need to be exposed to difference — in people and environment. Engineering education rarely offers such opportunities. Additionally, engineering students are rarely presented opportunities to develop designs responding to real human problems. This paper puts forth a new instructional model to address these needs by utilizing arts processes and practices as catalysts for both creativity development in students and transdisciplinary collaboration on problems addressing deep human needs. This model is premised on the substantiated role of the arts in developing creativity and growing understanding of the human condition. This art-based instructional model was piloted as exploratory pedagogical research during the summers of 2015 and 2016 as a partnership between the Arts Nexus (IAN) and the School of Engineering at the University of Dayton. In each year, this program supported twelve student interns from engineering, business, science, the arts, and the humanities to develop innovative technologies and services meeting client needs. Student growth in creative problem-solving and transdisciplinary collaboration, as well as the success of the completed innovation technology prototype were assessed by the project mentors and participating students via survey evaluations and narrative responses. The assessment results revealed substantial student growth in student creativity and transdisciplinary collaboration and a remarkably strong evaluation of the success of the students’ innovations. Also realized for all students was a transformation in their perception of their place in the world as professionals post-graduation.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Dropout in higher education is a matter of global interest, and several policies were created to encourage students to stay in universities. This article aimed to identify patterns of evaluation of student retention policies in higher education through a systematic literature review, selecting 39 documents from Scopus, Sage Journals, Web of Science, Google academic, and CAPES Periodicals. Regarding evaluation forms, the results indicated the predominance of analyses on the effects of policies on dropout. However, some studies evaluated students’ performance and time to graduation. Research works were mostly applied in public university environments, which indicates a scarcity of scientific production about private educational institutions. As for the formats of permanence policies, the literature pointed out four types of aid with different natures: financial, assistance, based on academic merit, and by criteria of students’ need/vulnerability. Based on the research, it was proposed that the evaluation of permanence policies should be threefold, considering permanence, performance, and time until graduation. Among the gaps in the literature, comparative studies between the types of policies were highlighted.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: Short version instruments are being developed to meet the needs of social sciences researchers who simulataneously use a number of instruments. The Approaches to Learning and Studying Inventory (ALSI) is a short version instrument to measure learning approaches used by students. This analysis is part of a study that is published in different medical education periodicals. The objective of this assessment was to validate the ALSI in a population of second year medical students of the Gadjah Mada University Faculty of Medicine (GMU FM), Yogyakarta.Method: 225 second year students in the regular program at the GMU FM were invited to complete the ALSI questionnaire. To suport construct validities of ALSI, an item’ validity, Crönbach alpha, factor analysis, convergent validity, and discriminant validity were measured. Results: A total of 160 students participated in this study (71,11% response rate). The data collected did not support the construct validities of ALSI.Conclusion: ALSI requires improvement, in particular the items of the surface approach subscale. Instead of the initial five subscales, it is probably more appropriate if the instrument is divided in only three subscales - surface approach, effort management-organized studying, and deep approach-monitoring studying.

The attitudes of midwifery students, who are being trained to perform the profession of midwifery in the future, toward doing scientific research are determining factors in increasing the quality of midwifery and strengthening evidence-based practices. Undergraduate education is an important stage in which basic research-related perspectives and skills are gained for health professions. This descriptive study aims to determine the anxiety and attitudes of midwifery students toward scientific research and to examine the variables that affect them. It was conducted at a public university in western Türkiye and included 246 undergraduate midwifery students. Midwifery students’ anxiety toward scientific research was found to be low and their attitudes toward scientific research were positive. The attitudes of students who have experience in doing scientific research, participated in scientific congresses/symposia, have the desire to do scientific research under the guidance of a consultant and follow periodicals, were found to be more positive. Anxiety and positive attitude toward scientific research were found to be negatively related. The results of the regression analysis showed that the students’ Research Anxiety affected their Attitude Toward Scientific Research. Students’ experiences of conducting scientific research reduce anxiety and affect attitudes positively. Therefore, undergraduate students should be actively involved in scientific research and activities. Keywords: Health professions education; midwifery student; research anxiety; research attitude

Abstract (sommario):
The article examines the early 20th century historical source base on the Siberian student community of the pre-revolutionary period. It argues that the sources complex of the period is heterogeneous in structure, nature, and content. It determines that the life of Siberian students, as depicted in the early 20th century sources from state archives, was recorded principally in the following aspects: approved and regulated university activities (admission, scholarships, training, participation in registered student organizations, fraternities, academic clubs, etc.) and oppositional, political, ideological activities of students prohibited by both central and local authorities and, in some cases, by university administration that followed the instructions. More details on pressing issues of student life (poverty, employment issues, etc.) unfold in the periodicals. There was a series of analytical and op-ed articles in the Sibirskii student (‘Siberian student’) and Sibirskie voprosy (‘Siberian issues’) magazines, in the Sibirskaya zhizn' (‘Siberian life’) and Utro Sibiri (‘The morning of Siberia’), and some others. The article shows that, apart from poverty and domestic issues, the informal student life, as lived outside educational institutions and politics (that is, love, friendship, attitude toward family, marriage, taste and theater preferences, fashion, and so on), went unreported. Some aspects of this life were pictured in fiction, published, for instance, in the Tomsk student press. But although they give some idea of the Siberian students’ view and ways of life, these sources don’t record facts of life.

Abstract (sommario):
Research by teachers and students at a university is closely related to the quality of the institution. Scientific journals in Indonesia at the international level are still low, including publications in periodicals (scientific journals) that are indexed in international reputable indexers. The management of scientific journals in order to achieve the target of becoming a nationally accredited scientific journal or even becoming a journal of international repute requires an effective and efficient journal management and management system based on the instruments and qualifications required by national journal accreditation institutions such as ARJUNA and reputable international indexing institutions. JPGT will try to meet the criteria for international journals, namely by having reviewers from at least 4 countries and papers published from at least 2 countries. The plan after obtaining national accreditation is to be indexed with international reputation.

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction. One of the goals of youth policy in the Russian Federation is the formation of a system of moral and semantic guidelines that can allow us to resist the ideology of extremism, nationalism, manifestations of xenophobia, discrimination and other negative social phenomena. Under the FSES university graduates are required to be able to navigate the socio-political environment, to have their own worldview, ideals and humanistic values, to have the ability to self-develop. Therefore, the active phase of youth education should be continued today beyond school education – in higher education. This requires the reanimation of the educational potential of universities. The main task of educating students at the university falls on the shoulders of curators of academic groups and tutors. The aim of the article is to compare the educational roles of curators and tutors in higher education.Material and methods. The material of the study was dissertations and articles in pedagogical periodicals devoted to the study of the activities of curators and tutors of universities, as well as the results of the practical organization of the work of a team of curators in a technical university. The study used the method of contextual analysis of publications and the setting of a pedagogical experiment to identify the effectiveness of the educational work of curators of student groups. Results and discussion. This article compares the educational roles of curators and tutors in higher education. It is noted that unlike tutors, the professionogram of curators of academic groups is not legally defined, their official duties are regulated by local acts established by universities independently. Comparing the functional responsibilities of tutors and curators shows the commonality of their educational roles, both categories are mentors of young people, implementing informal transfer of knowledge and social experience, providing assistance in personal and professional development. It is determined that the curator of the academic group is an employee of the educational organization from the teaching staff, who provides tutor support and academic guidance to the student group, organizes the educational and extracurricular activities of students with the aim of adaptation, harmonious development, personal and professional development of each student. It is concluded that the full implementation of the activities of academic groups’ curators requires the creation of an appropriate system of organizational and methodological support for this activity, including psychological and pedagogical training of academic groups’ curators.Conclusion. It is concluded that for the full implementation of the activities of curators of academic groups at a technical university, it is necessary to create an appropriate system of organizational and methodological support for this activity, including the psychological and pedagogical training of curators.

Abstract (sommario):
In the attempt of reconsidering and properly understanding the so-called Germanophile option of a part of the Romanian society during the Great War, knowing those who have placed themselves on the side of the Central Powers is a sine qua non condition. Apart from the personalities already recognized for this, one must also consider other names who, although not always in the foreground of the events or on the spotlights of the press, presented an unquestionable regional or institutional importance for the realities of those troubles years. One of these figures was Professor Ilie Bărbulescu from the University of Iaşi, well-known back then for his “unpatriotic” views which caused a lively opposition both from students and some of his colleagues. Within our text we refer to his collaboration to the “Seara” newspaper in Bucharest, one of the most important Germanophile periodicals in Romania during the neutrality (1914-1916).

Abstract (sommario):
Objective. The article is aimed to improve the understanding of university communities (teachers, students, librarians) concerning the development of distance learning, open educational resources, and the new role of university libraries in these processes. Methods. The main data on the development of distance learning, OER, and increasing the role of university libraries in these processes were obtained due to the analysis of professional publications in periodicals and on the university websites of around the world, the application of methods of method of participant and non-participant observation, a description of the authors’ own experience (the director of the scientific library, the associate professor of IT disciplines and the heads of the scientific library departments) who work at the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technology (Dnipro, Ukraine). Results. It has been established that the implementation of distance learning systems, the use and availability of open (preferably free) information sources on open access platforms or open educational resources (OER), exchange of scientific research in the digital scientific space, etc. – these components are closely interconnected and used among teachers, scientists, students. Distance education requires inclusion in the processes of both teachers – authors of open educational resources, and employees of certain services providing information and IT support for both teachers and the resources created by them. Such structures are university libraries, which were among the first to support the philosophy of openness and to join the processes of supporting open access, open science, and open education based on intellectual information systems and technologies. The experience of the scientific library of USUST is considered – a structure that enables online access to text and non-text OER as a necessary element while ensuring limited personal interaction between a teacher and a student. Conclusions. Today, during the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, the foundations are being actively laid to make the provision of educational services at universities, in particular distance education, dynamic and multidimensional. It is necessary to integrate electronic library resources with distance learning platforms to ensure unhindered access for students and teachers.

Abstract (sommario):
The article reveals previously unknown facts about the sinologist Sergei Alexandrovich Polevoy (1886—1971), who became famous due to his scientific, pedagogical and social activities in China. Being a native of dynasty that gave the world talented literary critics, writers and journalists, Polevoy from his youth was passionate about literature and collecting books alongside learning about China. His first academic work, prepared as a graduation paper at the Oriental Institute (Vladivostok), was devoted to periodicals in China; and his unique library composed of literature in many languages originated from the books on Oriental studies and linguistics. Living in China since 1917, Polevoy was a professor at Nankai University in Tianjin (since 1918) and then Peking University (since 1921), where he taught Chinese students the Russian language and literature. Using the introduction to Russian culture and literature as a new method of teaching, he brought up some famous Chinese writers and translators. His bookstore, opened in Beijing and having contacts with the International Book Company in Moscow, became a cultural bridge between Russia and China. Using the bookstore, Polevoy supplied Chinese students with textbooks and Russian classical literature, replenished the department of Slavic literature at the Beijing National Library, distributed Marxist literature and helped Chinese communist leaders establish contacts with the USSR. The authors also report the facts on the biography of Polevoyʼs son, Leonid, thanks to whom the Oriental Institute of the Far Eastern Federal University (Vladivostok) received the manuscript of S. Polevoy’s English-Chinese dictionary and his other materials on oriental studies. Leonid also presented his father’s book collection to Irkutsk, and these books served as the basis of the Humanitarian Centre — Library named after the Polevoys’ family. The article is based on materials from the Polevoys’ family archives and other private collections abroad.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of the paper is to present the modern possibilities for applying the digital form of comics in formal adult education. It is structurally divided into three logical units: the first presents domestic and foreign relevant literature on the application of comics in teaching, the second unit deals with the conceptual definition of comics and digital comics, and the third observes practical possibilities for using comics in adult education. The third unit is of particular importance because there are no papers in professional periodicals that previously dealt with that area. Comics as a teaching tool or method of work has a significant tradition in our primary school education. Professional literature presents numerous examples in which comics can be used at all levels of education, from school to university, and are particularly suitable for motivating students and adult learners or presenting teaching content that is considered difficult to understand. The digital literacy of adult learners and teachers can be significantly improved by applying ICT in the teaching process, where the creation of digital comics plays an increasingly important role.

Abstract (sommario):
The peculiarities of the development of organizational and academic autonomy of Kharkiv Imperial University in 1804–1835 are highlighted. It is shown that during the specified period the dynamics of the university autonomy process was characterized by a decrease in independence. It is proved that during 1804–1814 the institution was characterized by a high level of personnel autonomy. There were appointment and dismissal of teachers and officials, training of professors), managerial and educational autonomy (opening schools, finding teachers, writing textbooks, attracting local funds for educational needs), teaching autonomy ( teachers' free choice of sources for preparation for classes, high level of academic freedoms), publishing autonomy (printing in their own printing house) and student autonomy. The reasons for the change in attitudes towards the university and its independence after 1815 are analyzed (news of the murder of a history teacher by a German student, as a result - fears of youth free-thinking by the Ministry of Education, interference in university life, division of society into supporters and establishments of higher education). The events that became natural for that time are covered. They are the attack of the government and the most reactionary figures (O. Sturdza, M. Magnytskyi, D. Runich, I. Laval, etc.) on higher education and on university autonomy, ignoring the provisions of the democratic statute of 1804, publication in periodicals of articles directed against the independence of universities; dismissal of qualified teachers, reduction of the quality of higher education, etc. The level of organizational and academic autonomy in 1815–1835 is characterized (subordination of the university administration to the trustee, who now controlled all issues of the university; introduction of strict censorship; restriction of freedom of teaching; departure of foreign professors abroad; lack of teaching staff; superior treatment of students; loss of other privileges, etc.). The role of academic freedoms in the development of the student's personality is shown (self-preparation of higher education seekers, fundamental professional training, respect for academic virtues, gratitude of the university). Key words: organizational autonomy, academic autonomy, university, academic freedoms, higher education, student training.

Abstract (sommario):
To the 30th anniversary of Institute of Slavic Philology, СUL The essay offers an attempt to summarise the thirty years of Ukrainian studies within the Institute of Slavic Philology of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin. The beginnings of Slavic studies at the Catholic University of Lublin are related to the activities of the Interfaculty Department of Research on Byzantine-Slavic Culture, founded in 1981 thanks to the efforts of professor Ryszard Łużny, a philologist-Slavicist from the Jagiellonian University. The main purpose of this unit was to initiate research on ‘Ruthenian’ culture, derived from the Byzantine-Slavic root. The idea implemented by professor Łużny was innovative not only due to its profi led research program but also due to the curriculum, which offered students a wide range of knowledge on Eastern Slavs. From the very beginning of the unit’s functioning, its didactic structure was based on the three philologies: Belarusian, Russian and Ukrainian, and the academics pursued their research interests within the departments of Byzantine-Slavic Culture, Slavic Languages, and Slavic Literatures. Ukrainian studies at the Catholic University of Lublin have been shaped throughout this time by many eminent fi gures who determined the character of the unit by pointing out research directions to the next generations of linguists and historians of Ukrainian literature. These are professor Stefan Kozak, professor Stefaniia Andrusiv (literary studies), professor Michał Łesiуw, professor Dmytro Buchko, and professor Oleh Tyshchenko (linguistics). The essay discusses research and educational activities of the Institute of Slavic Philology. A series of regular research conferences, nationwide and international, focused on the issues of the Eastern Slavs, were organized during these thirty years. The author points out the most important academic publications and periodicals. Another direction of the Institute’s activity consisted in projects popularizing knowledge about the Polish-Ukrainian borderland, Ukrainian culture and language, with a special focus on the language spoken by the inhabitants of the Lublin region.

Abstract (sommario):
Contemporary information technology requires the reformulation of school routines aimed at optimizing student, teacher, and institutional performance. Concurrently, it necessitates the development and alignment of pedagogical and curricular strategies shaped by Web 3.0 platforms, which enable collective synchronous and asynchronous virtual interactions and the use of cognitive tools such as generative artifi cial intelligences. Such a scenario is natural for the contemporary generation of students, known as digital natives, while it can hinder the relationships, interactions, curricula, and didactic pedagogical performance of the preceding generation of teachers, referred to as digital migrants. This study aims to investigate how technologies are being applied in educational institutions and what their pedagogical and curricular contributions are. Google Scholar, Digital Library, and University Periodicals were used as support for the literature review and theoretical construction of this study. Additionally, other databases, books, theses, and articles from online journals were also explored. Finally, this article underscores the urgency for educational actors to master the new technologies that are emerging in educational spaces, considering that various activities previously carried out in non-virtual modalities are now taking place in digital environments, the native habitat of future generations.

Abstract (sommario):
The article presents an analysis of innovative teaching technologies as a way to increase students’ competitiveness. The author found that innovative technologies in education are information and communication technologies relying on computer-based learning. The structure, content of educational software, organization of Web-space are important when using innovative teaching technologies in English classes. We conducted the study in several stages: comparative analysis, synthesis, classification and systematization of the results of psychological and pedagogical, educational and methodological research; study of legislative acts, periodicals in order to identify the state of the research issue, and determining the directions of its solution, as well as subject, goal and objectives of the study. We used modelling to create situations of foreign language professional communication of future IT specialists. Empirical methods involved questionnaires used for identifying the motives of professional development and determining the features of the educational activities of future IT specialists in the process of training. The methods of mathematical statistics allowed to scientifically describe and systematize the obtained data, to identify the quantitative relationship between the studied phenomena, to analyse and summarize the results. We conducted a socio-psychological study during 2016 - 2019. It involved 255 first- and fourth-year students of National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.” Innovative information and communication technologies that improve the educational and cognitive activity of students, as well as increase the level of their knowledge have become important in teaching a foreign language in higher educational institutions. These technologies include MOODLE — Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment, business game, integrated pedagogical technology, case study technology. Thus, the information-rich learning process in combination with the use of innovative technologies, well-organized e-learning, interactive training courses, multimedia tools improves the program of teaching and learning foreign languages in general, and English in particular, improves the level of knowledge of future IT specialists and motivation to study and learn foreign languages, allows students to use a variety of authentic materials. We state that all these factors influence the process of individualization of learning and contribute to the successful mastery of a foreign language.

Abstract (sommario):
In the latter half of the 19th century, students of Eastern Galicia, who were destined to become scientists, engineers and cultural figures, had joined together in societies to advocate for their right to receive education in their native language. Additionally, they endeavored to advance the concept of developing a distinct «national science». The aim of the study is to analyze a new stage of nationally oriented, cultural, educational and scientific activities of Ukrainian student societies in Eastern Galicia from the late 19th century to 1939 which began due to active cooperation with Metropolitan A. Sheptytskyi. The author has used chronological, historical-comparative, retrospective, and interdisciplinary methods, including the structural method, to analyze historical evidence. The specificity of functioning of Ukrainian student societies in difficult and unfavorable conditions has investigated and has proved that the dominant direction of their activity was consolidation of society and realization of national and cultural aspirations of the Ukrainian people, catalyzing processes in the educational and scientific sphere through active interaction with A. Sheptytskyi. In the time period covered by this study, students collaborated with parties of various persuasions, took part in the fighting of the First World War and fought for the establishment of the Ukrainian University as a center of higher education and a Ukrainian scientific school. In the absence of opportunities and their own scientific institutions, student societies carried out their applied, fundamental, search and methodological research during participation in summer schools, applying their results in the publication of student periodicals, speeches at student congresses and studios, which were mostly organized and supported by intellectuals, including A. Sheptytskyi. To achieve this goal, Ukrainian student societies used a range of methods, from writing research papers and proclamations to boycotts. And the vision of the idea of state-building united Ukrainian students with well-known public and spiritual figures, scholars and artists of Eastern Galicia.

Abstract (sommario):
Objective – The research project sought to explore the value of data on publication patterns for decision-making regarding scholarly communications and collection development programs at a research-intensive post-secondary institution, the University of Utah in the United States. Methods – Publication data for prolific University of Utah authors were gathered from Scopus for the year 2009. The availability to University of Utah faculty, staff, and students of the journals in which University of Utah authors published was determined using the University of Utah Libraries’ catalogue; usage was estimated based on publisher-provided download statistics and requests through interlibrary loan; and costs were calculated from invoices, a periodicals directory, and publisher websites and communications. Indicators of value included the cost-per-use of journals to which the University of Utah Libraries subscribed, a comparison of interlibrary loan costs to subscription costs for journals to which the University of Utah Libraries did not subscribe, the relationship between publishing venue and usage, and the relationship between publishing venue and cost-per-use. Results – There were 22 University of Utah authors who published 10 or more articles in 2009. Collectively, these authors produced 275 articles in 162 journals. The University of Utah provided access through library subscriptions to 83% of the journals for which access, usage, and cost data were available, with widely varying usage and at widely varying costs. Cost-per-use and a comparison of interlibrary loan to subscription costs provided evidence of the effectiveness of collection development practices. However, at the individual journal title level, there was little overlap between the various indicators of journal value, with the highest ranked, or most valuable, journals differing depending on the indicator considered. Few of the articles studied appeared in open access journals, suggesting a possible focus area for the scholarly communications program. Conclusions – Knowledge of publication patterns provides an additional source of data to support collection development decisions and scholarly communications programming. As the estimated value of a journal is dependent on the factor being studied, gathering knowledge on a number of factors and from a variety of sources can lead to more informed decision-making. Efforts should be made to expand data considered in areas of scholarly communications and collection development beyond usage to incorporate publishing activities of institutionally affiliated authors.

Abstract (sommario):
At the beginning of 2020, a new coronavirus epidemic that swept the world completely changed all spheres of our public life. The epidemic of new coronary pneumonia had a certain impact and changed the thinking and behavior of students. The analysis of university students' activities from the point of view of moral qualities and life behavior showed that universities face such manifestations in the student environment as negative ideals and beliefs, ideological contradictions, low enthusiasm in learning, immersion in the Internet and obsession with computer games. After analyzing the experience of Chinese universities faced with the same problem, and summarizing the experience of teachers described in Chinese scientific periodicals, we came to the conclusion that the key factor in eliminating these shortcomings is the ideological training of students carried out in the process of teaching Russian as a Foreign Language. What should be the scientific and methodological support of the process of teaching Russian as a Foreign Language in order to help university students restore a scientific worldview and a scientific view of everyday learning? This has become the problem of the present study. The solution of the problem, as shown by the conducted research, is possible under the condition of scientific and methodological support of foreign language education, built in accordance with international standards of communication-oriented pedagogy and aimed at educating the norms of morality and morality, the ideals of patriotism in the process of daily teaching students a foreign language.

Abstract (sommario):
People living in food-insecure households may experience access-related barriers to preparing and consuming fresh produce, such as high cost and limited local availability. Nutrition interventions that incorporate improved access play a decisive role in overcoming these barriers. The urban bus hub fresh produce market was developed to address food insecurity in Dayton, Ohio. Over four months, dietetic students from a four-year, private, mid-western university provided cooking demonstrations and recipe distribution nutrition interventions at the market. We used a quasi-experimental study design to determine the effectiveness of the cooking demonstration and recipe distribution intervention on access-related barriers at the urban bus hub fresh produce market. A ten-item quantitative questionnaire, on a Likert-type scale from 1-10, with 10 as a more favorable response, and four open-ended questions were administered once to each consented participant (N=33) to examine the recipe effectives and explore the access-related barriers. T-tests were used to examine barriers from the questionnaire and determine differences between participants who made the recipe and participants who did not make the recipe. Results of the t-test indicate no significant difference between those who made the recipe and those who did not make the recipe (p>0.05). Mean scores for affordability, acceptability, accommodation, availability, and accessibility on the then ten-item questionnaire were 7.83, 8.44, 9.19, 9.38, and 8.44, respectively. Thematic analysis results were used to examine the barriers from the open-ended questions further and revealed that affordability and time barriers were present in the priority population. Lack of money, job loss, and unemployment were identified as contributing to affordability barriers and transportation and time to shop, prepare, or cook produce, and to find mealtimes were identified as contributing to time barriers. Nutrition professionals should continue developing appropriate interventions for affordability and time barriers in convenient locations for participants to encourage fruit and vegetable consumption and to establish evidence-based practices. KEYWORDS: Cooking demonstrations; food insecurity; produce consumption barriers; nutrition intervention; food stand; recipe distribution; bus hub

Abstract (sommario):
The article considers the development of academic literacy and intercultural communication in applicants of higher education institutions. In the context of the rapid development of modern information technologies, the European context of higher education sets a demand for qualitative changes in the training of competitive specialists, aimed at the requests of employers. The objective of the article is to analyse theoretical and methodological approaches to the development of academic literacy skills in students, which is the key to education quality, competitiveness in the professional environment and the field of international scientific communications. It has been determined that in modern conditions, with the increase of the use of digital communication technologies in the educational process and their availability, the blended learning model acquires large-scale significance and can stipulate the integration of educational activities and the introduction of digital communications for the development of communication competence in applicants. The basis of academic literacy is comprised of the following skills: operation of diverse languages, understanding of differences between these languages, and comprehension of the languages. Feedback allows students to realize and adjust their activity in accordance with the optimal activity strategy in an artificially created environment. Based on the communicative interaction, students and teachers discuss creative projects, use digital tools and web services to design multimedia electronic educational resources of Moodle system (an educational university portal). In order to improve professional training effectiveness of applicants and the quality of the higher education system, the educational environment should create a new academic community with academic literacy, academic integrity, and, in quarantine conditions, pay great attention to effective online communication. To do this, higher education institutions need to create a system of comprehensive development of academic literacy, academic integrity at all stages of education. That requires activation of discussion on these issues in foreign publications with an impact factor, professional periodicals, at scientific conferences, forums, seminars, webinars and trainings.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of the study is to review the representation of the local and temporal plane of the image of the city in the newspapers of Kharkiv higher education institutions in the 1960–1980s. Th e study uses printed publications of three higher education institutions of Kharkiv – Kharkiv State University and Kharkiv Polytechnic and Aviation Institutes. The research methodology. The study of the temporal dimension of the image of the city is performed following the principles of historical urbanism and imagology. Symbolic markers of urban space have been analyzed using the method of mental mapping. Th e method of oral history has also been used in the study. Th e concept of the outstanding linguist Yu. Shevelyov, who singled out several images of Kharkiv that existed in diff erent periods of its history has come to be the matrix of the study of the temporal image of the city. The scientifi c novelty of the study is that the article explores the image of Kharkiv through the prism of printed publications of higher educational institutions of the city for the fi rst time. The study has discovered that the history of Kharkiv was covered in a rather biased way in the Soviet print media, and some events that were inconvenient for the ruling regime were completely silenced. The presentation of the history of the imperial period of Kharkiv is fully adapted to the Soviet historical concept, in which the vision of the past passes through the prism of class struggle. There is no mention of the Cossack origin of the city and the era of Ukrainization. Instead, the importance of key moments in Soviet history for Kharkiv’s development is emphasized: the establishment of Bolshevik rule and the liberation of the city from the Nazi occupation in 1943. Kharkiv appears to newspaper readers as a largely industrial city and as a center of science and educationaft erwards. Th e brand of Kharkiv is much less mentioned as a city of students and youth. Kharkiv’s urban names are completely dominated by the names of Soviet party fi gures, participants in the struggle against the Nazi occupation, who were not always associated with the city’s past. In general, the mental map of Kharkiv in the pages of periodicals of Kharkiv higher education institutions depicts the city through the prism of Soviet fi gures, values, and symbols. Instead, there is almost no trace of urbanonyms that would be related to Kharkiv’s history. Conclusions. Th rough the prism of the Soviet view, the symbolic space of the city and the idea of its past, relevant to contemporaries, appear on the pages of periodicals of Kharkiv higher education institutions. Th e image of the city disseminated in periodicals served as a repeater of the Soviet vision of history and, in general, contributed to the education of Soviet values in thestudent environment. Modern for readers, Kharkiv looked like an industrial-scientifi c, purely Soviet, denationalized city, the names of objects and monuments of which refl ect mainly the Soviet worldview.

Abstract (sommario):
The article analyses the role of anthropomorphic monetary metaphors (AMMs) in interpreting professional English-language financial information by recipients (in our case, university students). The priority direction – English-language AMMs of unproductive capital – is but sparingly represented in modern Russian and foreign linguistic papers. The article aims to study the role of AMMs in qualifying financial concepts. The subject of the study is the functioning and implementation of figurative language units exposing the concept of the category of money in the semantics of idle funds. The object of the study is the adjective + money model, where the modifier (adjective) of unproductivity imparts a pejorative meaning to the figurative expression. The new epistemological strategy of humanitarian anthropomorphism places emphasis on the relevance of studying AMMs in the linguocultural context of English-language financial discourse due to their linguistic and cultural asymmetry in Russian and English, which reduces the level of learning intuitiveness. The research method applied here is a linguistic semiological analysis of the adjective + money model with an unproductivity modifier. The material included a corpus of periodicals, archives, financial encyclopaedias and dictionaries, as well as online media. The author draws an inference that an interweaving of the conceptual domains of idleness and finance generates a metaphorical transfer from human characteristics to monetary entities with an expressive negative connotation of cognitive models that metaphorically reflect the attitude towards idle capital. Moreover, finding their way into the lexical equipment of the professional continuum, AMMs activate students’ rhetorical thinking, simplifying concepts that are difficult for them to understand and increasing their level of learning intuitiveness. The results can be of interest to linguists and experts in cultural studies and be used in the field of discourse analysis.

Abstract (sommario):
The article presents an overview of the biography and scholarly heritage of a graduate of St. Petersburg University, a student of S.F.Platonov, and an outstanding Russian historian of the first half of the 20th century, P.G.Liubomirov. Based on the analysis of the works and materials of the personal archive of the scholar, the paper shows that the sphere of academic interests of P.G.Liubomirov comprised several directions. He made a great contribution to the study of the socio-economic history of the Low Volga region in the 17th–19th centuries, and to the history of social thought in Russia in the 18th century. A series of articles by P.G.Liubomirov on these topics appeared in the 1920–1930s in the regional academic periodicals. Many works of the scholar have never been published and are kept in his archive as manuscripts. In the 1930–1940s a group of his students and colleagues did a large amount of work with concerning publication of his works. However, due to the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War and ideological campaigns of the turn of the 1940–1950s this work has not been completed. Today, much of the scholarly heritage of P.G.Liubomirov remains unpublished and unknown to historians. The works of the historian has not lost their relevance. In this regard, it is necessary to resume work on the study and publication of the works of P.G.Liubomirov, which was interrupted in the 1950s.

Abstract (sommario):
The article summarizes the information obtained in the 1990s periodicals on the necessity to found a higher education institution in Rezekne and in this context analyses the narratives of readers and graduates of historical studies kept in the Oral History Archive of Rezekne Academy Technology (RAT), paying the greatest attention to the description of the study process, as well as the reflection of the students and university lecturers. Theoretical framework of the research consists of the theoretical insights of Paul Thomson (2000) and Alessandro Portelli (1991) that the oral history provides an opportunity to extend and even change the content of the history aimed at making it democratic and more personal. The publication is executed as a thematically descriptive account of qualitative analysis of content of the press articles and interviews. In the course of its elaboration the author concluded that the analyzed narratives, indirectly confirming the historical developments of the Third Awakening, inform about the participants of the process of historical studies in the new higher education institution in Latgale region, while themes of the press publications allows tracing down the awareness of society about the foundation of the higher education institution and the beginning of its operation. The results of the research prove that the community spirit and the emotional uplift, typical of society during the final stage of awakening is present in the individual experience of the readers and graduates, who were the participants of the initial stage of historical studies in the Rezekne Higher Education Institution, both as a context and stimulus for a purposeful cooperation and interaction.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to introduce the pilot project of collection assessment performed by an academic library for the Computer Information Science (CIS) Department specifically and share the experience involved in this assessment. Design/methodology/approach In this descriptive research, the library gathered and analyzed a set of evaluation reports for CIS-related print and electronic materials. This assessment includes analyses of physical items, periodicals, electronic resources, peers’ databases, faculty syllabi, as well as departmental allocation fund. Findings This project shows the importance of collaboration between the library and academic departments on collection evaluation and assessment. It demonstrates that the assessments of a department-specific collection can provide the library with insights into the quality of the collection and help librarians better understand the information requirements of the faculty and students in the department. By analyzing the data collected in the assessment, the library can spend the tight budget on the most needed core materials related to the curriculum and research of the department. This project provides a good example for future routine assessments. Practical implications The procedure, results and future work of this assessment provide other academic libraries with insights into and practical solutions to department-specific collection assessments. Originality/value The study describes a set of collection assessment activities specific to a disciplinary department undertaken by Spiva Library. Few studies have been conducted to study department-specific collection assessments. This type of study can assist a university library to develop a core collection in support of teaching, learning and research for individual academic departments.
