Johan, Irni Rahmayani. "Financial capability among university students in Indonesia". Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2018. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/8171/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The main aim of this study was to measure financial capability among university students in Indonesia. However, the study also contributes to: an understanding of the concept of financial capability and how it varies across countries and between groups. The main empirical part of the study was based on a major mixed method design which involved six focus groups followed by a large-scale representative survey of 521 face-to-face structured interviews with students, from Bogor Agricultural University, Bogor, Indonesia. The empirical study provides a wealth of important findings on financial capability among students. Most importantly, it shows that there are different drivers of financial knowledge, attitudes, and behaviour. In particular, the study reveals that a financial education course had an impact on knowledge but not on attitudes and behaviour, once other factors were controlled for. Other factors showed a stronger effect on financial attitudes and behaviour. These were: financial socialisation by family; year of study; and work experiences; and for financial behaviour, the level of income was also a stronger determinant factor. Given that experience was shown as a determinant factor of knowledge, attitudes and behaviour, it is recommended that the financial education courses use experiential learning as a method of delivery to enhance their impact. However, even enhanced financial education courses, on their own, are unlikely to significantly improve financial behaviour. Appropriate provision and regulation of financial services, alongside maintaining adequate income levels are also vital.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this project was to compare the financial management habits of Ball State University first-year students and seniors living on campus.A stratified, systematic sample of 100 first-year students and 100 seniors were surveyed during December 2000. Data were collected on 25 variables, 4 describing personal characteristics, and 21 describing personal financial management habits. It was determined that Ball State University first-year students and seniors have similar financial management habits. Statistically significant differences between first-year students and seniors existed on the following variables: having a student loan, knowing when the loan must be repaid, having one or more credit cards, carrying a balance on one or more credit cards, having a savings account, and recording expenditures in a check register.Financial management is an area that Student Affairs practitioners may want to consider investing more time educating students. Current financial management programs may need to be evaluated for their effectiveness. Using current research, new programs may be developed and implemented.

Ducie, Gregory Justin. "Financial viability of sustainable infrastructural development at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University". Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1015063.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Sustainable environmental practices need to be integrated into a university's infrastructural operations. Universities are entities that function within financial constraints with varying priorities across both administrative and educational functions. Unfortunately, these financial constraints often imply that a university's potential leadership role can only be realised should the viability (business case) of a proposed intervention be determined. This study focuses on the determination of a relational sustainable indicator and a relational cost factor. A relational sustainable indicator demonstrates how a university can collectively determine the contribution made to sustainability by various sectors of infrastructure. This is developed by means of a secondary study. Two components are important for calculating the relational sustainability indicator, namely, green infrastructure attributes and the basic elements of sustainability systems, namely, the environmental, economic and social dimensions of sustainability. The determination of a relational cost factor involves the quantification of the costs associated with alternative infrastructure provision. In particular, attention is paid to demand-side management costs, rationalising spatial growth costs, green building development costs, operation and maintenance of existing buildings costs, wastewater infrastructure costs, water infrastructure costs, energy infrastructure costs and transport infrastructure costs. Once the actual costs of each intervention category are determined, a relational sustainable cost factor can be calculated. Utilising the costs in the eight categories identified, a relational sustainable cost factor is determined. A resultant relational cost benefit as per the eight defined categories of sustainable infrastructure provision is derived from the relevant costs of sustainable infrastructure provision, the resultant relational cost factors and, finally, the relational sustainability indicators. It is proposed that that the determination of a budget split between the various interventions based on the resultant relational cost factor occur as follows: - Demand side management interventions: 15.97percent - Rationalising spatial growth: 6.72percent - Construction of green buildings: 24.37percent - Operations and maintenance: 21.85percent - Wastewater: 7.56percent - Water: 1.68percent - Energy: 12.61percent - Transport: 9.24percent. This study provides a platform to guide how and where to invest in sustainable infrastructure and provide direction in determining a budget split between various categories of sustainable infrastructure development.

Casarin, Veronica. "Controlling innovation, innovating control : accounting for innovation in the field of university-industry interrelations in the UK". Thesis, Cardiff University, 2016. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/92517/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The thesis examines the role of accounting in configuring innovation as the driver of economic progress in modern Britain. Set against a context of changing governmental rationalities and greater attention of economic theory upon issues of R&D productivity, University-Industry interrelations have come to represent, since the 1980s, a laboratory where British government has experimented with programmes for both promoting and decentralising innovation, while maintaining at a distance control through mandated calculations and calculative devices. The thesis brings accounting into the discussion of how private and public agencies of governance steer innovation by exploring the paradoxical phrase: “controlling innovation, innovating control”. The phrase questions the extent to which accounting discipline and practices have changed in order to keep pace with the progressive economic and social agenda of innovation. By means of an in-depth study of accounting practices, corroborated by forty semi-structured interviews, the thesis explores the action of controlling innovation across three main sites where university-industry interrelations are enacted, namely technology transfer, technology incubation, and corporate R&D. Drawing on the concept of socio-technical agencement (Callon 2005) the thesis seeks to identify and analyse the economic agencies that configure and assemble innovation as an actor capable of influencing government policies, corporate strategies, and universities’ mission. The thesis shows that controlling innovation involves calculative action that is mainly distributed across accounting devices (e.g. Discounted Cash Flow, R&D budget, and input-output performance indicators), non-accounting devices, and human entities. Drawing on, and expanding, the work of Beunza & Garud (2007) on calculative frames, the thesis finds patterns of regularity occurring in the mechanisms through which economic action within innovation is organized and distributed. The thesis also accounts for the tensions arising in the negotiation of different versions of the value of innovation. Finally, while controlling innovation is performed through a variety of accounting devices, the thesis shows that such devices are not new to the accounting discipline and practice, but rather are traditional accounting tools that adapted to the innovation rationale in virtue of their fluid and combinable properties.

Bartlett, Jessica. "A Compensation Comparison: Determinants of Compensation for Chief Executive Officers and University Presidents". Scholarship @ Claremont, 2012. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/525.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The compensation of chief executive officers has long been an alluring and controversial topic, especially in light of the rapid rise in CEO earnings over the past several decades, which has provoked discussion on the manner in which CEOs are monetarily rewarded. Recently, university presidents have joined company CEOs in the public spotlight, as increasing levels of compensation for college presidents have also sparked scrutiny and debate. This paper examines the determinants behind CEO compensation and investigates the extent to which insights on these factors compare to the compensation determinants of chief executives at universities. Ultimately, this study finds similarities between the determinants of compensation for these two executive groups, specifically in the significance of organization size, type, and performance, as well as personal executive characteristics such as gender and tenure. The findings therefore suggest that these executives have similar job responsibilities, and the results also possess important insights and applications to relevant issues regarding executive compensation.

Stelljes, Scott. "Applications of Stochastic Calculus to Finance". UNF Digital Commons, 2004. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/267.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Stochastic Calculus has been applied to the problem of pricing financial derivatives since 1973 when Black and Scholes published their famous paper "The Pricing of Options and Corporate Liabilities" in the Joumal of Political Economy. The purpose of this thesis is to show the mathematical principles underlying the methods applied to finance and to present a new model of the stock price process. As part of this paper, we present proofs of Ito's Formula and Girsanov's Theorem which are frequently used in financial applications. We demonstrate the application of these theorems to calculating the fair price of a European call option. There are two methods that result in the same price: the risk neutral valuation and the Black-Scholes partial differential equation. A new model of the stock price process is presented in Section 4. This model was inspired by the model of Cox and Ross published in 1976. We develop the model such that a martingale measure will exist for the present value of the stock price. We fit data to the traditional geometric Brownian motion model and the new model and compare the resulting prices. The data fit some stocks well, but in some cases the new model provided a better fit. The price of a European call is calculated for both models for several different stocks.

Kheovichai, Baramee. "Marketization in the language of UK university recruitment : a critical discourse analysis and corpus comparison of university and finance industry job advertisements". Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2014. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/4706/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis investigates the marketization of universities’ recruitment discourse, using critical discourse analysis and corpus linguistic methodology. University and financial job advertisements were compared synchronically and diachronically. Synchronic corpus linguistic analyses were executed on 3,000 online university and 3,000 financial job advertisements from the present day. In addition, 60 university and financial job advertisements from newspaper in the 1970s were analysed manually for the diachronic comparison. The results indicate that while 1970s university and financial job advertisements are strikingly different, 2010s university job advertisements are fundamentally aligned with those from businesses. 2010s university job advertisements and financial job advertisements seek to establish the credentials of the employer but this move is rare in 1970s university job advertisements. Universities in 2010s are construed as performing activities that are inherently promotional. Applicants in 2010s university job advertisements are construed as more equal and as benefiting from the job. The evaluative adjectives in university and financial job advertisements are largely similar. Business oriented discourse and ideologies have become conventionalized in the phraseology of university discourse. However, universities do not always adopt business discursive practices and should indeed be more selective about the in-take of business discourse.

Odendal, Marta W. "Students' university choice". Thesis, University of Stirling, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/23039.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis addresses UK students’ university choice using discrete choice methods and micro-data obtained from Higher Education Statistical Agency for graduates between 2006 and 2010. The thesis consists of three chapters with each addressing a different aspect of students’ choice. The studies are intended to provide policy-makers and other decision-makers with valuable information that will help them to implement strategies and policies for better higher education. Some work in the literature has been dedicated to students’ university choice. This thesis explores this body of work and builds on it, extends it and improves what is previously known in the literature. The aim of the first chapter is to investigate what affects students’ university choice. It contributes to the literature by establishing the best method to do so. Two models are used: the standard conditional logit and conditional logit with, what is called in this paper, alternative specific constants. Conditional logit with alternative specific constants improves on conditional logit twofold: it deals with unobserved university characteristics and improves the model fit. The results show that the probability of attending a university decreases with an increase in tuition fees and distance between students’ home and the university, and decreases in students’ socio-economic status. The second chapter further investigates the importance of distance on students’ university choice and it contributes to the literature by calculating the willingness to pay of students for distance to university. The chosen models are estimated for different socio-economic group of students separately. This methodology allows for meaningful comparison between socio-economic groups and produces more reliable estimates due to the fact that it accommodates for different unobserved characteristics of universities for different groups of students. The results show that students with the highest socio-economic status are not affected or have a positive utility of distance. The willingness to pay of other socio-economic groups are mixed and depend on the university characteristics used in the model. The third chapter focuses on students’ attitudes towards costs and benefits of university degree by calculating the discount rate of future income using marginal utility of graduate income and tuition fees. In addition, the chapter shows how use of consideration sets of universities for each student improves the model fit. The results show that students have a normal discount rate around 1% without consideration sets. The discount rate becomes negative in all models apart from one, when consideration sets are used.

Tyagi, Rajesh. "A computer-based DSS for funds management in a large state university environment". Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77782.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The comprehensive computerized decision support system developed in this research employs two techniques, computer modeling and goal programming, to assist top university financial officers in assessing the current status of funds sources and uses. The purpose of the DSS is to aid in reaching decisions concerning proposed projects, and to allocate funds from sources to uses on an aggregate basis according to a rational set of prescribed procedures. The computer model provides fast and easy access to the database and it permits the administrator to update the database as new information is received. Goal programming is used for modeling the allocation process since it provides a framework for the inclusion of multiple goals that may be conflicting and incommensurable. The goal programming model allocates funds from sources to uses based on a priority structure associated with the goals. The DSS, which runs interactively, performs a number of tasks that include: selection of model parameters, formulating goals and priority structure, and solving the GP model. It also provides on-line access to the database so that it may be updated as necessary. In addition, the DSS generates reports regarding funds allocation and goal achievements to allow analysis of the model results. The decision support system also provides a framework for experimentation with various goal and priority structures, thus facilitating what-if analyses. The user can also perform a sensitivity analysis by observing the effect of assigning different relative importance to a goal or set of goals.

Hannah, Charles Russell. "The leadership orientations of public college and university chief financial officers| A frame analysis". Thesis, Arkansas State University, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3557708.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

The role of the chief financial officer (CFO) is critical to the effective leadership of U.S. four-year public colleges and universities. Self-awareness and the capacity to view situations simultaneously in multiple ways and from different perspectives are essential elements of CFO effectiveness and success in the higher education environment.

The relationship of the chief financial officer and the chief academic officer (CAO) is a key component of effective higher education leadership and a critical element of CFO success. Information about the self-perceptions of chief financial officers and perceptions of chief financial officers by chief academic officers will: (1) enhance CFO self-awareness and effectiveness, (2) broaden their ability to apply multi-frame thinking and formulate adaptive approaches, and (3) deepen their understanding of and appreciation for the CFO/CAO relationship.

The purpose of this study was to examine the predominant leadership orientations of CFOs at U.S. four-year public colleges and universities as self-perceived and as perceived by CAOs.

The study employed survey methodology to gather information about CFOs’ self-perception of their leadership orientations and the perception of CFOs’ leadership orientations by CAOs. Information on demographic characteristics was gathered to determine if they explained variations in the responses. The Bolman and Deal Leadership Orientation Questionnaires for SELF and OTHERS were employed to gather the information.

Three general findings emerged from the study. First, both CFOs and their CAO colleagues perceive that CFOs employ the structural frame as their predominant leadership orientation. Second, the demographic characteristics considered did not account for any significant difference in the responses received from either group. Third, there is no significant difference in how CFOs and CAOs perceive the CFO’s predominant leadership orientation, the structural frame.

This will be done based on a framework consisting of previous studies and research concerning financial literacy, utility and rationality. A quantitative study was made by gathering data through an online survey. Two comparisons were made between the reference group Business Administration students, and each of the four faculties. The first comparison concerned financial literacy and the second one concerned rational financial decision making. The results show that the reference group have a higher financial literacy but at the same time, they are not different concerning rational financial decision making. The study further investigated the relationship between financial literacy and rational financial decision making. A correlation test was carried out on these two variables and the results showed that they were independent of each other.
