This research is a qualitative study through the descriptive methodology. The researchers selected 30 dissertations randomly from the Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Language, the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka and analysed them. The review of the documents focuses on students’ abilities to write dissertations. Also, 25 students who submitted their dissertations were selected randomly to fill the questionnaire to reveal the challenges they faced. Writing a dissertation in a foreign or second language is difficult than writing in a native language. As pointed out in the previous sections, there are challenges in writing dissertations such as the influence of the Tamil language, Lack of knowledge in research writing, Selecting a new topic, Lack of reading, Experience of using the software. At the same time, findings of the review of the dissertations reveal that language fluency and data analysis are the common errors observed in the dissertations.

Abstract (sommario):
Acknowledgements in students’ dissertations are considered a socially anticipated illocutionary response and act. This article aims to contribute to our knowledge about graduates’ gratitude expression in dissertations. A content analysis was conducted on the acknowledgement section of 60 Psychology dissertations submitted to the Department of Psychology, University of Ghana (DoP-UoG), and the School of Psychology, University of Leeds (SoP-UoL). The findings showed that acknowledgements in Psychology dissertations submitted to the DoP-UoG are framed as a religio-scientific script (i.e., religion-and-science bound script), whereas acknowledgements in dissertations submitted to the SoP-UoL can be described as a scientific script (i.e., science-bound scripts). Cross-cultural explanations of this observation are discussed.

Abstract The Centre for Aboriginal Studies in Music (CASM) at the University of Adelaide was founded in 1972 and is the world’s only dedicated university centre for Australian Indigenous music studies. This article investigates the making of the CASM Archive through collaboration between CASM academics and students and professional archivists in the University of Adelaide Library. It demonstrates how this unusual approach, originally intended to provide students with an understanding of CASM’s history, resulted in a collaborative process of slow appraisal that enabled CASM students to make greatly useful contributions to appraising and communicating the significance of the CASM Archive.

AbstractCharles Todd, who established the Adelaide Observatory on West Terrace in 1860, retired as Government Astronomer at the end of 1906. In 1908 the meteorological duties of the Observatory were taken over by the Commonwealth, and the Observatory lost most of its staff. Following the promotion of George Dodwell to the position of Government Astronomer in 1909, the Observatory was slowly re-established and undertook a range of astronomical and other work, which is described in detail in this paper. The Observatory was transferred to the University of Adelaide in 1940 and this is often taken as the closure of the Observatory. Dodwell finished working as Government Astronomer in 1952.

Abstract (sommario):
This study examined the methodological consistency of Master of Educationdissertations defended at Eduardo Mondlane University (EMU) from 2013 to2018 using the typology of educational research proposed by Postlethwaite(2005), Norman et al. (2002), and Creswell (2012). The qualitative, comparativestudy employed a grounded theory design. Data were gathered from apurposive sample of 33 dissertations, available on the university’s OpenInstitutional Repository. Coding and anonymous analysis were performedof the dissertations’ title, research methodology, and findings. The findingsreveal that a large number of these dissertations are not methodologicallyconsistent and thus do not lay the foundation for further research and otherinterventions for school improvement. They thus point to the need to improve the quality of supervision and research in postgraduate studies in Education at EMU.Key words: EMU, Master’s dissertations, educational research, methodologicalconsistency, supervision

Abstract (sommario):
The study aims to examine postgraduate dissertations in the areas of social entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship in tourism and entrepreneurship in tourism published in Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States through bibliometric analysis. In the study, a total of 126 doctoral dissertations published between 2015-2020 were reached through Proquest Dissertations, YÖK National Dissertations Center, EThOS British Library and EBSCO Dissertations databases. Theses published since 2015 are included in the scope since social entrepreneurship has started to be recognized in doctoral dissertations. The obtained dissertations were discussed in line with parameters of country where the dissertations were prepared, type of the dissertations, publication year of the dissertations, university where the dissertations were prepared, field of study of the dissertations, and research method used in the dissertations. In conclusion, it was found that Turkey was behind the United Kingdom and the United States in terms of quantity of doctoral dissertations published about social entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship in tourism. Social entrepreneurship in tourism has been found to be a current issue that needs to be researched and has a literature gap for all three countries.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine two research questions: first, How do users in different locations find Auburn University Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)? Second, do users in different locations interact differently with the collection and, if so, how? Design/methodology/approach – Google Analytics data for user visits, landing pages, and page views were separated into groups based on user location. Visits data were also correlated with source (referring web site), and landing pages and page views were grouped by type. Findings – Most local users came to the repository via Auburn University web pages. This group usually landed on the collection home page and used internal navigation pages to find what they needed. Submission page views showed that most ETD depositors were local. Most out-of-state users came to the repository via web search engines. This group usually landed directly on bibliographic information pages for individual ETDs. They used internal navigation pages less frequently than local users. Users located within the state but outside of the local area interacted with the collection in a way that was intermediate between these two groups. Practical implications – Institutions interested in improving repository access for depositors will probably find it helpful to focus on in-state usage reports, while institutions seeking to improve access for end-users should exclude in-state users from their assessments. Originality/value – This is the first detailed examination of ETDs usage published since 2001 and shows how filtering tools available in Google Analytics allow comparisons of user behavior based on location and source (referring web site).

Abstract (sommario):
Ralph Tate (1840–1901), the foundation Professor of Natural Science at the University of Adelaide, proved to be a remarkable scientist and naturalist with outstanding achievements in several fields. Tate was selected for the Chair in Adelaide, despite having no previous university experience, mainly on the recommendation of T. H. Huxley. This paper examines Tate's background in some detail and establishes that, in fact, as a respected geologist and palaeontologist with interests in conchology and botany, he was particularly well qualified to fill the post. He had had years of teaching practice, a long list of research publications and even experience in exploring new territories.

The European aristocratic imaginary and the Eastern paradise: Europe, Islam andChina 1100-1780. Batchelor. Robert Kinnaird, Jr. Ph.D. University of California, LosAngeles, 1999.218~A~d.v isers: John Brewer and David Sabean. The disseaion investigates changes in the social imaginary of the European aristocracy, which centered on the garden as a space of social and cultural production, to argue that firstIslam and later China played an integral role in the formation of conceptions of both aristocraticsociety and later the nation in Europe. The nineteenth century institution ofOrientalism as a scholarly and literary form of writing about the East cannot be understoodwithout an historical understanding of its basis in earlier aristocratic attempts to define andmaintain their class status in emerging nation states by drawing upon cultural models perceivedas external and superior to Europe. An interest in the unique combination of sensualityand emtic love with formal geometry and a strict ordering of nature in the Islamic gardendrove this process during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, while in the seventeenthand eighteenth centuries, especially in England, the “irregular” nature of the Chinese gardenwith its “management of contrasts” and “concealment of the bounds’’ captivated the attentionof a “patriotic” and nationally oriented aristocracy and gentry. These exchanges cameout of, and were in turn shaped by, a formal commerce in writings and images that developedfirst locally in the Meditemean and then globally between Europe and China.Bayazid Bistami an analysis of early Persian mysticism (ninth century, Islam). In-depth, semistructured interviews were conductedto explore how Rabbis, Priests, and Imams/Sheiks from three monotheistic religionsdefine and justify terrorism in the name of religion. Also addressed are what functions, ifany, religious leaders can or should play in fostering better understanding of terrorism in theU.S.A. or elsewhere. A stratified, purposive sample of 24 participants was drawn from anavailable population of religious leaders (representing their major sects) from the Northeastregion of the United States. Following traditions appropriate to qualitative research, datawas collected, sorted and analyzed. Findings of this study confiied the difficulty of definingterrorism. All participants agree that terrorism cannot be justified in their religions.Nevertheless, many of them gave some justifications of certain terrorist acts without specificallyconsidering these acts as terrorism. Abstract (sommario):
The preparation and publication of dissertations can be viewed as a subsystem of scholarly communication, and the treatment of data that support doctoral research can be mapped in a very controlled manner to the data curation lifecycle. Dissertation datasets represent “low-hanging fruit” for universities who are developing institutional data collections. The current workflow for processing electronic theses and dissertations (ETD) at a typical American university is presented, and a new practice is proposed that includes datasets in the process of formulating, awarding, and disseminating dissertations in a way that enables them to be linked and curated together. The value proposition and new roles for the university and its student-authors, faculty, graduate programs and librarians are explored.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper describes three exemplars of practice inspired by emerging evidence that student-staff partnerships have the potential to significantly enhance many areas of higher education. Students and academics at the University of Adelaide have successfully implemented this collaborative approach across a range of learning and teaching contexts. The Design Thinking Framework, developed by the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford University, was utilised at a faculty, program, and course level to frame each of the exemplars, due to its implicit approach to creativity, collaborative development, and achievement of solutions. The iterative nature of the framework facilitated a review cycle for continuous improvement in each Students-as-Partners’ initiative. Analysing the outcomes of each exemplar has identified common hallmarks of successful partnership, and these indicators have the potential to contribute to the growing body of evidence that defines best practice in this pedagogy

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. South Australia is the driest state in the driest inhabited country in the world, Australia. Consequently, water is one of South Australia's highest priorities. Focus on water research and sources of water in the state became more critical during the Millenium drought that occurred between 1997 and 2011. In response to increased concern about water sources the South Australian government established The Goyder Institute for Water Research – a partnership between the South Australian State Government, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Flinders University, University of Adelaide and University of South Australia. The Goyder Institute undertakes cutting-edge science to inform the development of innovative integrated water management strategies to ensure South Australia's ongoing water security and enhance the South Australian Government's capacity to develop and deliver science-based policy solutions in water management. This paper focuses on the integrated water resource assessment of the northern Adelaide region, including the key research investments in water and climate, and how this information is being utilised by decision makers in the region.

Abstract (sommario):
Bill Elliott graduated in Biochemistry at Cambridge and gained his PhD with enzymologist Malcolm Dixon in the Biochemical Laboratories. Following research appointments at Harvard, Oxford and the Australian National University, he became Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Adelaide in 1965. He was an outstanding scholar and stimulating teacher who profoundly influenced the lives of students and staff of his Adelaide department. Early in his career he made important contributions to the understanding of enzyme reactions driven by phosphoryl group transfer from adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and discovered the glutamine synthetase enzymes in plant and animal tissues that utilize that mechanism. He later worked on mechanisms of enzyme secretion by certain microorganisms, before turning to the biochemical mechanisms of porphyrin synthesis that lead to the formation of haem and thence haemoglobin, research that he pursued for the rest of his academic life.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Changes in forest resources expertise from 1978 to 2017, as measured by annual number of doctoral dissertations published on twenty topics, were examined. Using the ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global database, titles and abstracts from 11,530 dissertations produced by fifty-six universities in the United States were selected. Automated content analysis and latent Dirichlet allocation were used to identify the optimal number of topic groupings among 7,742 dissertations that met selection criteria. Substantial differences were found in the pattern of publication among the twenty topics over time. The number of dissertations related to forest growth and silviculture; tree seedling propagation, physiology, and regeneration; and forest soil nutrients, ecology, and management declined over the past two decades. Dissertations related to forest wildlife management, including terrestrial wildlife ecology and management; wildlife food and nutrition; and fish ecology and management also declined during the same period. The number of dissertations in the fields of forest policy, politics, and social science; forest modeling, biometrics, and statistics; wood science; forest vegetation ecology; and avian ecology increased during the four decades. Dissertations published in the fields of forest economics, and forest entomology and pathology, remained relatively stable. Study Implications: We found decreasing production of doctoral dissertations focused on applied forest and wildlife management topics in recent decades. Declining doctoral-level expertise in applied fields after the early 2000s suggest that there may be reduced capacity to address practical problems facing both forest and wildlife managers. This decline also suggests that finding university instructors qualified to teach more applied forest and wildlife courses may have been more difficult over the past decade and possibly into the future. Our analysis indicated that the increased number of dissertations in adjacent sciences supporting forest resources has substantially increased capacity in these areas.

Abstract (sommario):
The article consists of a literature review by surveying publications of theses and dissertations filed in the database of the Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD) of (MCTI). In the first part, we present a theoretical framework on university, educational policy and social emancipation. In the second part, we catalog and analyze the productions by reading the summary and keywords. In this section, we make a brief analysis of the surveys grouping them by emerging categories and subcategories, that is, which emerged during the analysis. For the construction of the text, we opted for a documentary research, in an exploratory perspective and with a qualitative approach of getting to know the field of production through theses and dissertations. Among the themes found, we identified: institutional evaluation, University, Educational policy, School management, Professional training, School as rights, Itinerant School. Finally, we believe that the research contributions are timely and reinforce that we have achieved our objective.
