Emrani, Mahdieh Sadat. "Relationships Between Motor Unit Anatomical Characteristics and Motor Unit Potential Statistics in Healthy Muscles". Thesis, University of Waterloo, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/897.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The main goal of this thesis was to discover the relationships between MU characteristics and MUP features. To reach this goal, several features explaining the anatomical structure of the muscle were introduced. Additionally, features representing specific properties of the EMG signal detected from that muscle, were defined. Since information regarding the underlying anatomy was not available from real data, a physiologically based muscle model was used to extract the required features. This muscle model stands out from others, by providing similar acquisition schemes as the ones utilized by physicians in real clinical settings and by modelling the interactions among different volume conductor factors and the collection of MUs in the muscle in a realistic way. Having the features ready, several relationship discovery techniques were used, to reveal relationships between MU features and MUP features. To interpret the results obtained from the correlation analysis and pattern discovery techniques properly, several algorithms and new statistics were defined. The results obtained from correlation analysis and pattern discovery technique were similar to each other, and suggested that to maximize the inter-relationships between MUP features and MU features, MUPs could be filtered based on their slope values, specifically MUPs with slopes lower than 0. 6 v/s could be excluded. Additionally PDT results showed that high slope MUPs were not as informative about the underlying MU and could be excluded to maximize the relationships between MUP features and MU characteristics. Certain MUP features were determined to be highly related to certain MU characteristics. MUP area and duration were shown to be the best representative feature for the MU size and average fiber density, respectively. For the distribution of fiber diameter in the MU, duration and number of turns were determined to reflect mean fiber diameter and stdv of fiber diameter the best, correspondingly.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis was developed as an assignment from Atlas Copco where the goal was to develop software that could simulate an OU (Operator Unit) in a PC environment. Atlas Copco’s proprietary radio-control system for mining vehicles consists of a transmitter, called OU, and a receiver, called MU (Machine Unit). An OU is a controller with controls in the form of buttons, joysticks and switches and with indicators in the form of LEDs and display. To ensure that an OU only can communicate with a specific MU and vice versa the units’ radio modules must be paired together through a process called “learn link”, that is performed by connecting the units with a CAN-cable.   By using an OU simulator for MU production tests it would be easier to perform some tests, such as internal errors and warnings, and it would be possible to include tests that are impossible to do with OU hardware, such as intentionally send a miscalculated checksum, to examine the MU’s response. The OU simulator should have a graphical user interface and by connecting a radio card to the PC it should be able to send and receive data from an MU. It should also be able to perform “learn link”. The final product was developed using C# together with an XP-inspired development method.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
The main aim of this master thesis was to design and build an Audio Effects Unit (AEU), whose function is to process, a particular audio signal in real time. The objective was to develop a general purpose audio processing unit where the processing function, implemented in the digital domain, can be easily specified by the user by means of a software application running on a computer. The first stage of this project consisted on the full design and implementation of the hardware that constitutes the AEU. It is worth adding that such design also considered that the layout could be placed in an enclosure. Such way of designing was a great new experience. The next stage was to prepare the mathematical algorithms to be implemented in the AEU microcontroller which create the sound effects by processing the original audio signal. These algorithms were first tested in MatLab. To control the produced sound effects a computer program was created which allows the user intervention in a straightforward way. This program ensures communication between the AEU microcontroller and PC software using an USB connection. The completed device was tested in laboratory and with Matlab. The individual blocks of the AEU, and the whole device, were tested. On the basis of these tests frequency characteristics were drawn and the quality of the audio device was analyzed. Besides acquiring expertise in hardware design, this project has broadened my knowledge on microcontroller programming and code optimization, a requirement for real time signal processing. It also gave me the opportunity to use the commercial MPLAB programming environment.
Oprócz zdobywania doświadczenia w projektowaniu sprzętu, udział w projekcie poszerzył moją wiedzę o programowaniu mikrokontrolerów i optymalizacji kodu, potrzebną dla przetwarzania sygnału w czasie rzeczywistym. Ponadto miałem możliwość zapoznania się z komercyjnym środowiskiem programistycznym MPLAB.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis addresses the challenges with unit testing of embedded software. Embedded software uses peripheral devices that are not available during testing, which results in higher barriers to use unit testing, compared to normal software. But even with these barriers there are no problems with unit testing of embedded software. The study looks at challenges with unit testing of Energy Micros software library, and solutions to the problems with automated testing of embedded software. Use of automated testing will reduce the number of errors when code is refactored. Use of unit testing will also make it possible to take advantage of agile methods like test-driven development. The main goals for the study is to see if CMock is suitable for generation of mock modules and if testing with mock modules can reduce the number of errors in software.Unity is a test harness that supports the needed assertions for testing of embedded software. CMock is able to automatic generate mock modules, but has a few problems with inline functions and custom types, but it is possible to solve these problems. Even with these problems CMock is able to generate mock modules that is working, and supports the testing of embedded software. An experiment was performed to see if testing of embedded software with mock modules could reduce the number of errors. The result was significant and showed that the number of errors was reduced by using mock modules, compared development without testing. Observations were also done during the experiment, which found some problems with use of mock modules during testing. The experiment was done by undergraduate students in computer science.Use of unit test and mock modules as a substitute for hardware during automated testing on a native computer, it is possible to reduce the numbers of errors and refactor code without breaking the existing functionality.

Abstract (sommario):

Turnaround time is a metric most often used to determine a laboratory?s performance. This business project discusses the proposal of a mobile laboratory company called the Mobile Laboratory Unit. The focus of this project is the implementation of a mobile laboratory company that can reduce turnaround time on laboratory results and deliver services at a competitive rate while keeping the integrity and reliability of laboratory results that health care providers are accustomed to receiving. North Orange County businesses are the demographic target and currently does not have an organization such as this, therefore, a company that offers a service such as the Mobile Laboratory Unit would fill a void that is present within this market. Organizations outside of health care companies would be able to use the services of the Mobile Laboratory as well to conduct onsite health screenings and drug tests for students and employees.

Abstract (sommario):
The topic of unit commitment has been and continues to be of interest to many researchers and is a primary operation for most utilities. Past research has utilized integer programming, dynamic programming, linear programming, gradient, and heuristic techniques. This research combines both linear programming and dynamic programming for unit commitment decisions within a weekly time frame. The result provides most of the advantages of linear programming and dynamic programming with less stringent requirements on the pre solution information needed for unit transition sequences. Further, the research yields a new tool for the solution of the Transaction Evaluation problem.

Cattell, David William. "Component unit pricing theory". Thesis, University of Cape Town, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/5072.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Building contractors are often commissioned using unit price based contracts. They, nevertheless, often compete on the basis of their overall project bids and yet are paid on the basis of these projectsâ constituent item prices. If a contractor decides these prices by way of applying an uneven mark-up to their estimates of their costs, this is known as unbalanced bidding. This research provides proof and explanation that different item pricing scenarios produce different levels of reward for a contractor, whilst exposing them to different degrees of risk. The theory describes the three identified sources of these rewards as well as provides the first explanation of the risks. It has identified the three types of risk involved and provides a model by which both the rewards as well as these risks can now be measured given any item pricing scenario. The research has included a study of the mainstream microeconomic techniques of Modern Portfolio Theory, Value-at-Risk, as well as Cumulative Prospect Theory that are all suited to making decisions that involve trading-off prospective rewards against risk. These techniques are then incorporated into a model that serves to identify the one item pricing combination that will produce the optimum value of utility as will be best suited to a contractorâs risk profile. The research has included the development of software written especially for this purpose in Java so that this theory could be tested on a hypothetical project. A test produced an improvement of more than 150% on the present-value worth of the contractorâs profit from this project, if they apply this model compared to if they instead price the project in a balanced manner.

Abstract (sommario):
Background Midwifery units (MUs) provide midwife-led care for women at low risk of complications. They may be located on the same site as an obstetric unit (OU), in a hospital without obstetric services or separate from any hospital. In MUs, if unforeseen complications arise, transfer to an OU may be necessary. Aim To provide evidence to contribute to the improvement of the transfer process, help make transfer safer and less distressing for women, thereby improving the care and experience of women planning to give birth in MUs. Methods A structured literature review of existing evidence was followed by three integrated component studies using different methods. The content and quality of local NHS transfer guidelines were evaluated. Data from the Birthplace national prospective cohort study were analysed to estimate transfer rates, describe the transfer process and identify factors associated with transfer. The experiences of women transferred were explored in qualitative interviews. Findings Transfer is a common event, affecting around 25% of women planning birth in MUs, although rates in different units vary. Primiparous women are more likely to be transferred than women having a second or subsequent baby. The risk of transfer for primiparous women increases with increasing age; around 50% of women having their first baby aged 40 years or over are transferred. Local NHS transfer guidelines are generally of poor quality and pay little attention to women’s experience. Women interviewed after transfer report feeling unprepared for transfer. Sensitive care and clear communication from midwives during labour facilitate feelings of control in women and help women accept transfer as the right decision and not a 'negative' event. Transfer that is perceived by women as “too late” can have potentially serious and long-lasting negative effects. Women’s experience of the transfer journey could be improved by the offer of choice in a number of areas which would help women feel 'cared for' rather than 'transported'. Having the MU midwife continue to care for the woman after transfer should be considered 'best practice'; where this is not possible a good handover is essential. Women who have experienced transfer should be offered the opportunity to talk to a midwife about their experience.

A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics
This project studies how variations in the measurement unit of unit price affect consumers’ preference and choice. Particularly, we contend that consumers’ relative preference for the same two option is different when options’ unit price is presented in a large measurement unit – per kg; than when options’ unit price is presented in a small measurement unit – per 100g. Moreover, consumers’ choice will shift more to lower unit price options when options’ unit price is presented in larger measurement unit – per kg. Two experiments confirmed our hypotheses. Implications and future research on the topic are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis deals with a general investigation and comparison of methods of solution of the unit commitment problem for thermal generating units. An intensive mathematical model for this problem has been developed and presented. The most commonly implemented methods for solving the problem of unit commitment were reviewed and discussed. Every reviewed method had been coded in FORTRAN 77 on a VAX11/785 machine. On the basis of the results obtained, a comprehensive comparison of the different methods ha; been carried out. For the comparison to be realistic and practical, each method was tested on three power systems of different sizes. As a result of the comparison, the unit commitment problem for a case study system has been solved by using the most appropriate method(s) from those discussed in the thesis. A new approach for solving the problem has also been proposed and tested.

McMillan, Anne Sinclair. "Human masseter motor unit behaviour". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/30673.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
There is a dearth of knowledge on the functional organization of the anatomically complex human masseter muscle. Limited physiological studies suggest a functional organization which may differ significantly from human limb muscles. The present studies aimed to examine the putative relationship between structure and function in the human masseter muscle as a basis for understanding function and dysfunction in human jaw muscles. In the first experiment single motor unit (SMU) activity was recorded from pairs of recording sites distributed throughout the masseter muscle. In each case SMU activity at a chosen location was used as a reference to search for synchronized SMU activity at another selected site. The locations of the needle tips were estimated in 3-dimensions (3-D) by means of an optical system, then transferred to 3-D reconstructions derived from Magnetic Resonance images. This approach permitted calculation of the linear distances between verified muscle recording sites. The mean separation of the sites from which synchronous SMU activity could be recorded was 8.8±3.4mm. The putative territories had a preferred orientation in the antero-posterior axis. Motor unit territories were larger than described previously, and appeared to be related to anatomical compartments. The second experiment involved recording activity from stereotactically mapped masseter SMUs. In each case, the lowest sustainable firing frequency (LSFF) was reached by slow increases and decreases in voluntary firing rate, followed by sustained firing at the lowest possible rate. Pulse-discrimination and digital sampling of consecutive inter-spike intervals (ISIs) were then used to measure LSFF for 2-6 separate occlusal and postural tasks to which each unit contributed. There were significant differences between mean ISIs for the tasks performed by most units, which suggests descending drive to masseter units is highly task-dependent. There were also regional differences in unit task specificities. In the third paradigm, reflex SMU activity was recorded from units in the masseter muscle and the inferior head of the lateral pterygoid muscle. Bipolar electrodes fixed to the gingiva near the maxillary canine delivered single pulses of 1ms duration at sub-noxious levels of intensity. At constrained firing frequencies (10, 15Hz), pulses were injected sequentially, with increasing delays, after preselected spikes. More profound inhibition occurred in units firing at 10 than 15Hz. There were significant differences in masseter inhibitory responses when the unit task varied. Reflex inhibition in masseter and lateral pterygoid SMUs is highly frequency-dependent, and also task-dependent in masseter units. The fourth study involved recording activity from SMUs in the masseter muscle. A midline load cell was fixed to the incisor teeth and aligned either perpendicular (P) or 30 degrees anterior (A) to the occlusal plane, without altering jaw position. A rigid spike-triggered averaging (STA) paradigm was used to extract the contribution of individual SMUs to the overall force at load cell orientations P and A. Spikes preceded or followed by an interval of less than 100ms were rejected prior to averaging. At background bite forces from 0.06-8N, the isometric forces apparently developed by individual units varied randomly with load cell orientations, (P range 36.2±19.6mN; A range 38.2±28.4mN). All units could be fired slowly with varying degrees of muscle coactivation, in some instances without contact on the load cell. The use of STA as a method for determining SMU tension in the masseter muscle appears to be task-dependent and in the presence of coactivation may be inappropriate. The findings collectively indicate the heterogeneous nature of SMU behaviour in the human masseter muscle which is consistent with internal muscle compartments based on anatomical features and functional behaviour. There thus appear to be both physiological and anatomical substrates for differential motor control of selected regions of the human masseter muscle.

Abstract (sommario):
We consider the use of a sieve bootstrap based on moving average (MA) and autoregressive moving average (ARMA) approximations to test the unit root hypothesis when the true Data Generating Process (DGP) is a general linear process. We provide invariance principles for these bootstrap DGPs and we prove that the resulting ADF tests are asymptotically valid. Our simulations indicate that these tests sometimes outperform those based on the usual autoregressive (AR) sieve bootstrap. We study the reasons for the failure of the AR sieve bootstrap tests and propose some solutions, including a modified version of the fast double bootstrap.
We also argue that using biased estimators to build bootstrap DGPs may result in less accurate inference. Some simulations confirm this in the case of ADF tests. We show that one can use the GLS transformation matrix to obtain equations that can be used to estimate bias in general ARMA(p,q) models. We compare the resulting bias reduced estimator to a widely used bootstrap based bias corrected estimator. Our simulations indicate that the former has better finite sample properties then the latter in the case of MA models. Finally, our simulations show that using bias corrected or bias reduced estimators to build bootstrap DGP sometimes provides accuracy gains.

Abstract (sommario):
Despite having the numerous evolved heart rate measuring devices and progress in their development over the years, there always remain the challenges of modern signal processing implementation by a comparatively small size wearable device. This thesis paper presents a wearable reflectance photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor system for measuring the heart rate of a user both in steady and moving states. The size and, power consumption of the device are considered while developing, to ensure an easy deployment of the unit at the measuring site and the ability to power the entire unit with a battery .The selection of both the electronic circuits and signal processing techniques is based on their sensitivity to PPG signals, robustness against noise inducing artifacts and miniaturization of the entire measuring unit. The entire signal chain operates in the discrete-time, which allows the entire signal processing to be implemented in firmware on an embedded microprocessor. The PPG sensor system is implemented on a single PCB that consumes around 7.5mW of power. Benchmarking tests with standard heart rate measuring devices reveal that the developed measurement unit (combination of the PPG sensor system, and inertial measurement unit (IMU) developed in-house at Acreo Swedish ICT, and a battery) is comparable to the devices in detecting heart rate even in motion artifacts environment. This thesis work is carried out in Acreo Swedish ICT, Gothenburg, Sweden in collaboration with MidSweden University, Sundsvall, Department of Electronics Design. This report can be used as ground work for future development of wearable heart rate measuring units at Acreo Swedish ICT.

Smith, Lynette Vanessa. "Essays in unit root testing". Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2003. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11152/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is a collection of four essays with main focus on testing for a unit root under structural change, and on the behaviour of power-enhancing unit root tests that have recently emerged as a solution to the well-known power deficiency of traditional such tests. New tests and variants of commonly applied ones are introduced in response to the need for reliable statistical techniques in modelling economic series over time. The first essay explores the possibility that a time series may change structure from trend-stationarity to difference-stationarity, or vice versa as has been recognised by economists for several years. Taking difference-stationarity as the null hypothesis, tests are developed for this possibility, where neither the location nor direction of any possible change under the alternative hypothesis need be specified. Application of these tests to series on consumer price inflation in the G7 countries reveals evidence of a change from trend-stationarity to difference-stationarity in the majority of these countries. In the second essay we apply two elaboration principles of standard unit root tests in the more flexible setting of testing for a unit root against the alternative of stationarity around a smooth transition in linear trend. In comparison to the standard case, the modified tests within this context generate only moderate additional power, a phenomenon which appears to be related to the elaborate nature of the trend function under the alternative. An empirical application of the modified smooth transition tests to common macroeconomic time series in the US economy leads to stronger evidence in favour of the smooth transition alternative than do the unmodified tests. In the third essay we show that more powerful variants of commonly applied unit root tests to panel data, seeking mean or trend reversion, are readily available. Moreover, power gains persist when the modifications are applied to bootstrap procedures that may be employed when cross-correlation of a rather general sort among individual panel members is suspected. That such an approach can strongly influence inference is demonstrated through an application to a panel of real exchange rates against the US dollar. The final essay explores the behaviour of the power-enhancing unit root test most widely applied in the empirical literature. The principle issue is that such a test can have very low power for certain parameter configurations and sample sizes relative to conventional unit root tests. A theoretical attempt is made to identify these unsatisfactory cases relying on local to unity asymptotics, through investigation of the relative efficiencies in the case of an unknown mean. Extensive Monte Carlo results highlight the shortcomings of such a test under higher order autoregressive processes and indicate preference for its existing rivals.

Lin, Zhiyuan. "Passenger train unit scheduling optimisation". Thesis, University of Leeds, 2014. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/8607/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis deals with optimisation approaches for the train unit scheduling problem (TUSP). Given a train operator’s fixed timetables and a fleet of train units of different types, the TUSP aims at determining an assignment plan such that each train trip in the timetable is appropriately covered by a single or coupled units, with certain objectives achieved and certain constraints respected. From the perspective of a train unit, scheduling assigns a sequence of trains to it as its daily workload. The TUSP also includes some auxiliary activities such as empty-running generation, coupling/decoupling control, platform assignment, platform/siding/depot capacity control, re-platforming, reverse, shunting movements from/to sidings or depots and unit blockage resolution. It is also relevant with activities like unit overnight balance, maintenance provision and unit rostering. In general, it is a very complex planning process involving various aspects. Current literature on optimisation methods for the TUSP is very scarce, and for those existing ones they are generally unsuitable for the UK railway industry, either due to different problem settings and operational regulations or simplifications on some critical factors in practice. Moreover, there is no known successful commercial software for automatically optimising train unit scheduling in the world as far as the author is aware, in contrast with bus vehicle scheduling, crew scheduling and flight scheduling. This research aims at taking an initial step for filling the above gaps. A two-level framework for solving the TUSP has been proposed based on the connection-arc graph representation. The network-level as an integer multicommodity flow model captures the essence of the rail network and allocates the optimum amount of train unit resources to each train globally to ensure the overall optimality, and the station-level process (post-processing) resolves the remaining local issues like unit blockage. Several ILP formulations are presented to solve the network-level model. A local convex hull method is particularly used to realise difficult requirements and tighten LP relaxation and some further discussions over this method is also given. Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition is used to convert an arc formulation to a path formulation. A customised branch-and-price solver is designed to solve the path formulation. Extensive computational experiments have been conducted based on real-world problem instances from ScotRail. The results are satisfied by rail practitioners from ScotRail and are generally competitive or better than the manual ones. Experiments for fine-tuning the branch-and-price solver, solution quality analysis, demand estimation and post-processing have also been carried out and the results are reported. This research has laid a promising foundation leading to a continuation EPSRC funded project (EP/M007243/1) in collaboration with FirstGroup and Tracsis plc.

The BEAU is an electric-assist bicycle system that is completely self-contained within the rear wheel. The purpose of approaching a electric-assist bicycle in this manner is two-fold: simplifying the device and opening the method of implementation to more creative uses. The project requires a large amount of knowledge from many fields. Based on the limits of research, the project will show the aspects of the BEAU's design and how they meet the overall design goals of the project. The BEAU is made up of several parts, none of which include a bicycle. The design of the BEAU takes the bicycle and rider into account only for aesthetic and control reasons. Inside the BEAU reside a custom motor, closed loop controller with power electronic drive elements for the motor, battery pack with custom battery management circuitry, and torque and rotary position encoders. The simplification of both the device required to electrify a bicycle and the user input required to control such a device is intended to make the BEAU a very attractive electric bicycle conversion alternative that can be used not only for consumer uses, but also in situations of mass utilization, such as a bike sharing program. This research was completed entirely within the Smart Cities group by the author. The original concept of the BEAU was arrived at during a meeting with the late William J. Mitchell as the "GreenWheel" and the project was begun as a team effort with Michael T. Lin, also of Smart Cities. The BEAU manifestation is entirely of the authors design with the purpose of investigating some of the more theoretical aspects of the GreenWheel concept.

Optical trackers are often used at the Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC) and at other Department of Defense (DoD) ranges to collect video and trajectory data for real-time display and postflight processing. When optical trackers are used in remote areas, pointing data from radar is utilized to enable the trackers to initially acquire targets. To enable the trackers to use radar-pointing data, offsets to true north must first be known. This offset is taken into account given the current position of the optical tracker. During postflight processing, when determining the trajectory of the target, the offsets are also taken into account to produce an accurate trajectory solution. Current methods of determining offsets to true north are time consuming and involve a lot of guesswork. Typically, a map and a known landmark are used to determine the offsets to true north. Another method is to look for the North Star (Polaris) and input an estimated offset. This paper will describe an inexpensive, stand-alone system that utilizes the Global Positioning System (GPS) to determine these offsets. This device may be modified and integrated with other systems that may need to point accurately. For example, a gun barrel on a tank may need to point accurately to within a degree. This device may also be used to accurately position telemetry antennas.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In order to make a profit in any earthmoving operation it is important to plan the operation, select the appropriate equipment and use the haul units efficiently in order to obtain the maximum productivity. Maximizing productivity is one of construction project management personnel's primary objectives, but can also be one of their greatest challenges. The need for effective productivity planning is obvious since productivity ultimately translates into profit. In order to plan an earthmoving operation it is important to understand the travel times of the hauling equipment. Travel time is a variable that, in turn, depends upon other variables associated with the haul unit, and the haul road conditions. Presently there is no travel time model that appropriately considers these factors and simulates the interactions among them such that more detailed analysis could be performed. Such a model needs to be developed. The objective of this research is to develop a detailed model to simulate the travel time considering, in the amount of detail needed, the variables upon which travel time is dependent. The key in the development of the model is the calculation of acceleration. The simulation of how instantaneous acceleration varies may be a complex procedure because instantaneous acceleration is a function of numerous variables, many of which are in turn functions of the velocity and position, which are themselves integral functions of acceleration. The acceleration of a vehicle is dependent on the vehicle characteristics, road conditions, and operator. It is very difficult to consider changes in instantaneous acceleration by using analytical procedures. A numerical method should be used in order to analyze the complex system and determine the travel time or velocity profile of the vehicle. MATLAB software was used to analyze and solve the complex system numerically. A model that considers that the machine is working at full capacity was developed. It considers the variables that affect travel time in the amount of detail needed. The impact that the operator has in the machine performance can be highlighted after a comparison of the results obtained with actual field data, once the model is calibrated.

Abstract (sommario):
This Thesis report addresses some of the modifications implemented on a pre-existing project in aim to satisfy the 'Australian and New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 2535.1:2007' for a Solar Collector Efficiency Testing Unit. The prime objective of this assignment was to further improve on the performance of the testing unit by constricting the process parameter readings within the accuracy bounds quoted by the standard. Successful delivery of the project task will permit the testing unit to fulfil its intended purpose of allowing several tests to be conducted on the Solar Collector on a daily basis rather than the traditional one test per day arrangement. The scope of this text provides careful analysis and adjustment procedures to certain aspects of concern that were believed to be potentially responsible for the existing accuracy failures. Thorough tests and experiments were conducted on all suspected factors of the setup as an empirical elimination process to ultimately identify which factors were causing the main concern in relation to accuracy. Significant progress has been made on the accuracy limitation; however the results obtained suggest that it still marginally fails to abide within the bounds declared by the AS/NZS standard.

Abstract (sommario):
This project concentrates on the development and testing of the solar efficiency unit. This was achieved by defining the capabilities of the system, and developing a control strategy to control the temperature and flow rate of the fluid leaving the unit. The prime objective was to develop the unit’s control performance to fulfil the ‘Australian and New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 2535.1.2007’ for testing the efficiency of solar collectors. This will enable the system to perform multiple tests a day, with a high level of accuracy. The AS/NZS 2535.1.2007 standard suggests that the fluid’s flow-rate and temperature at the outlet of the unit should have an accuracy of ±1% and ±1°C respectively throughout the duration of the test, which is 15 minutes. The text outlines the test procedures, along with the instrument and software modifications that were implemented in order to achieve the project’s goal. The report provides analysis of the steady-state performance of the system, and highlights how the system was able to achieve accurate flow-rate control, and how the unit’s capabilities denied the system from achieving a temperature control performance that complies with the accuracy specified by the standard. Major progress was achieved in developing the unit’s control performance, and yet the unit failed to achieve the requirements by the standard, still the report highlights some important factors that will produce more accurate control.

Abstract (sommario):
This project focuses on the development of the time-efficient Solar Collector Testing Unit in compliance with ‘Australian and New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 2535.1:2007’. The prime objective was to modify the existing unit’s control and data acquisition system such that experimental parameters were constricted within the bounds quoted by the standard. It is required that the inlet temperature and flow-rate to the solar collector be constrained to an accuracy of ±0.1⁰C and ±1%, respectively throughout the 15 minute measurement period. Successful completion of the project objective will allow Solar Collector testing to be conducted in a less time-consuming manner. The text discusses analysis of factors preventing compliance with the standard, and adjustments to the system responsible for further improving the unit’s performance. Steady-state analysis is provided, determining that the violation rate of the flow-rate and temperature outside of the required accuracy bounds has been substantially reduced in comparison to previous iterations of this project. Significant progress has been made in regard to inlet temperature accuracy, and greater insight has been gained in regard to the inadequacy of domestic water heaters used in the project. It is concluded that without major changes to instrumentation, the unit will not be capable of achieving the bounds set by the standard.

Recent advances in acoustic navigation methodologies are enabling the way for AUVs to extend their submerged mission time and maintain a bounded XY position error. Additionally, advances in inertial sensor technology have drastically lowered the size, power consumption, and cost of these sensors. Nonetheless, these sensors are still noisy and accrue error over time. This thesis builds on the research and recent developments in single beacon one-way-travel- time (OWTT) acoustic navigation and investigates the degree of bounding position error for small AUVs with a minimal navigation strap-down sensor suite, relying mostly on a consumer grade microelectromechanical system (MEMS) inertial measurement unit (IMU) and a vehicle's dynamic model velocity. An implementation of an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) that includes IMU bias estimation and coupled with a range filter, is obtained in the field on two OceanServer Technology, Inc. Abstract (sommario):
Sensitive devices are affected by extreme vibration excitations during operation so require isolation from high levels of vibration excitations. When these excitation characteristics of the devices are well known, the vibration isolation can be achieved accurately. However, it is possible to have expected profile information of the excitations with respect to frequency. Therefore, it is practical and useful to implement this information in the design process for vibration isolation. In this thesis, passive vibration isolation technique is examined and a computer code is developed which would assist the isolator selection process. Several sample cases in six degree of freedom are designed for a sample excitation and for sample assumptions defined for an inertial measurement unit. Different optimization methods for design optimizations are initially compared and then different designs are arranged according to the optimization results using isolators from catalogues for these sample cases. In the next step, the probable designs are compared according to their isolator characteristics. Finally, one of these designs are selected for each case, taking into account both the probable location deviations and property deviations of isolators.

JavaScript has gained increased usage and attention the last years, but development and testing methods is still lagging behind. To mitigate some of these issues, this thesis brings together unit testing and JavaScript, using test-driven development as a methodology. Through exploration of these topics, the differentiators in a unit testing framework are considered. Existing frameworks are also discussed and how the terminology in JavaScript differs from traditional xUnit family frameworks.By creating and running a set of four test cases, both the general and unique features of JavaScript are tested in hand-picked frameworks, which were decided through an evaluation process. One of the contributions is based on this; a recommendation for a minimum set of test library features for a JavaScript unit testing framework.Various factors were found to differentiate the frameworks, and so the thesis also provides a Discovery test case to emphasize some of these aspects. This test case provides practitioners with a quick option for learning a new framework. The set of test cases can be applied to new frameworks to assess their functionality. As the thesis explores an area with little current research, suggestions for further work present several topics, ranging from system level JavaScript testing to quantitative studies building on the set of test cases.

Abstract (sommario):
The development of swimming was investigated in zebrafish aged 1.5 to 5 days postfertilization by examining both the swimming behavior and its generation by the nervous system. Upon hatching (at day 2), swimming is undirected and occurs in sustained bursts of high frequency (mean = 67 Hz) tail undulations. By 4 days, the swimming pattern matures to a more directed, less erratic, beat-and-glide pattern where slower (mean = 35 Hz) tail undulations, lasting ∼200 ms, alternate with longer gliding rest periods. Swimming is powered by two classes of embryonic muscles (embryonic red, ER and white, EW) that are electrically coupled within (but not between) classes and have physiological properties similar to vertebrate tonic and twitch muscle, respectively. ER fibers have a lower chloride ion permeability than EW fibers and do not have sodium dependent action potentials. In paralyzed preparations, motoneurons and muscle fibers received coordinated excitatory synaptic activity (with left to right alternation and head to tail propagation) corresponding to either burst or beat-and-glide swimming. ER muscle was de-recruited at the fastest swimming rates and EW fibers dropped out at the slowest swimming rates. Rhythmic motoneuron output was generated by a phasic glutamatergic and a largely tonic glycinergic synaptic drive. Glutamatergic synapses had either or both AMPA/kainate and NMDA receptors and the kinetics of these synaptic currents were fixed throughout the developmental period examined. When depolarized, motoneurons fired high frequency (up to 800 Hz) bursts of action potentials that rapidly accommodated (within ∼20 ms) due to voltage and calcium dependent outwardly rectifying conductances. These intrinsic motoneuron properties are hypothesized to interact with the rhythmic synaptic drive to pattern motor output (at ∼25--75 Hz) to locomotor muscles. The neural generation of swimming in developing zebrafish is thus fundamentally similar to locomotion in adu
