Abstract (sommario):
Shield tunneling is becoming the preferred construction scheme for metro construction because of its advantages of fast construction speed and small disturbance. However, limited by process defects, the stratum movements induced by the construction of shield tunnels still affects the safety of nearby underground structures and aboveground buildings. Therefore, the reliable prediction of stratum movements is important. Described in this paper is an analysis method of the Greenfield stratum movements (Greenfield is an area of land that has not yet had buildings on it, stratum movements means the movement of various soil layers) caused by shield tunnel construction combining an elastic half-space model of mirror source–sink method with the use of modified analytical method. Based on the theoretical formula in this paper, not only can the curve of surface settlement trough be calculated, but also the three-dimensional displacement field of deep soil can be obtained. By comparing vertical and horizontal contour maps of Greenfield stratum movements, good consistency between theoretical formula results and centrifugal test results are shown. This solves the defects and limitations of existing two-dimensional formulas; furthermore, based on this, it is convenient to evaluate the effect on the other skewed underground structures through the elastic foundation beam and other similar methods; therefore, this paper can provide a wide guidance and service for the design and construction of underground engineering in the future.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper examines creation and application history of cave space in catacomb movement of the Russian Orthodox Church on the territory of the Don and the Volga Region in 1920-1940s. Development of cave digging on these territories was promoted by the fact of their frontier position, allowing searching for a hiding place for the ideas, differing from the mainstream society. The caves use as shelters and places of worship in the Don Region is exemplified by the territory of Voronezh Region, where in the revolution period caves were dug in the chalk mass near the village of Karayashnik, and traditionally honored by the people loci of sacred space were used like caves in Divnogorye and on Shatrishche Mount. Caves near the village of Karayashnik were used as a place of worship by a conservative part of peasants being supporters of both the Patriarchal Church and the Fedorovtsy sect. Caves in Divnogorye were used by Joanites sect, caves on Shatrishche Mount were used by so-called True Orthodox Church. In addition to the chalk caves in the Don Region people used underground of houses as secret places of worship. Examples of such undergrounds are hidden caves in the villages of Troitskoe and Novopokrovka, equipped by one of communities of so-called True Orthodox Christians. The paper considers caves use in the Volga Region through the example of the territory of the Republic of Tatarstan, where communities of the True Orthodox Church acted, creating cult undergrounds under houses in the town of Bugulma and villages of Akkireevo, Zabugorovka, Crym-Saray Naumovka and Novoe Ilmovo. Together with territories of personal farmsteads, caves were created outside villages, usually in a forest zone. For example, near the village of Novosheshminsk there was an underground monastery, near villages of Volchya Sloboda and Elantovo there were underground temples. Activities of the underground religious communities referred to in the paper were ceased due to state punitive measures.

Abstract (sommario):
This article discusses the underground cinema of the German Democratic Republic during the 1980s in regard to its contributions to the arts and the avant-garde. While scholars including Claus Löser and Katrin Frietzsche have contributed greatly to the remembrance of the East German underground cinema, its influences have been disregarded by film studies, not least within the anglophone field. As a result, little to no research has been conducted regarding its contributions to the avant-garde or through the scope of other art movements as the political aspect continues to be emphasized. This article draws upon multiple art developments such as dada, surrealism, performance and body art as well as Eastern European-specific movements. Therefore, it evaluates how the East German underground interprets those influences and further contributes to them. Significant works by Cornelia Schleime, Gabriele Stötzer, Thomas Frydetzki and Tohm di Roes are subject to analyses to reveal anarchist feminist tendencies and surrealism with anarchist aspects. It concludes that the East German underground must be seen as a contribution to the less-researched necrorealism as an art movement paralleling the constitutional socialist realism. As such, political implications cannot be subtracted altogether but shall rather be viewed alongside the emergence of anarchist surrealism during the Cold War.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. The surface movement in an area of about 22 km2 above the underground coal mine of Houthalen was analyzed based on Interferometry with Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) measurements. After its closure in 1992, a residual subsidence was observed over a period of several years, followed by an uplift of the surface above and around the past longwall panels, whereby the rate of movement was, in absolute terms, of the same order for the two types of movements. The processes behind these movements are different. The process of subsidence is caused by the caving of the roof above the mined-out area and is mainly a mechanical stress-deformation process, including time-dependent aspects. However, the process of uplift is most probably caused by the swelling of the clay minerals in the argillaceous rocks in the coal strata after the flooding of the underground workings. Hence, the areas in which there is the greatest risk of damage to the surface infrastructure are not the same for the hazards linked to subsidence and uplift. For example, the zone in which the maximum uplift occurs clearly is at a different location from that of the zone with the maximum residual subsidence. There is no clear sign that the amount of mining underneath affects the residual subsidence, and there is no indication that the process of uplift is linked directly to the mining characteristics. It is more likely that uplift as the result of flooding is initiated at, or close to, the vertical shafts.

Abstract (sommario):
The “Three Under Mining” (mining under the buildings, the railways, and the waters) coal resources are stored in the central and eastern China. Many large-scale mine disasters occurred due to overburden strata movement and surface subsidence. Longwall mining with superhigh-water material backfilling technology has been improved efficiently to prevent the underground disasters and protect the surface ecological environment. Since underground mine pressure behavior and overlying strata movement are influenced by the backfilling strength and backfilling rates, rational design of backfilling parameters is key to realize the green mining of deep buried coal seams. Based on the combination of geological and production conditions of a deep buried coal seam with composite beam theory, the roof fracture distance was analyzed. The software of UDEC was used to simulate the overlying strata movement laws affected by the different backfilling strength and backfilling rates. With the comparative analysis of the vertical displacement movements and the vertical stress distributions, the reasonable filling rate and water volume fraction were determined to be 90% and 95%, respectively. According to the field experiments, the underground dynamic load was low enough for the safe mining, and the village building can be kept in a stable state with the application of the backfilling technology. The research results in a scientific basis for the coordinated development between the safe and efficient mining of deep buried coal resources and protection of the surface ecological environment.

The pursuit of quality through quality assurance/control programs has been augmented in the recent past by implementing an organization-wide Total Quality Leadership (TQL) program at the Repair Division, Marine Corps Logistics Base, Albany, Georgia. Most TQL concepts have been successfully integrated into the culture of the Repair Division. One concept yet to be integrated deals with capturing the costs related to achieving quality. This TQL concept known as 'Cost of Quality' is the subject of this thesis. This study evaluates the TQL program, quality control program,- and the cost accounting systems to determine if implementing a quality cost measurement system would provide benefits for better managing quality related costs. From this evaluation, a model of the Repair Division's cost of quality was derived. Also outlined in the study were procedures which guide the implementation of a quality cost measurement system. The analysis revealed that the implementation of a quality cost measurement system would be a beneficial tool for management. This system would allow management to plan and control the allocation of funds used to achieve goals related to quality. The need to improve the cost accounting systems and better tracking of detailed production costs are recommended.

Jobst, Marko. "The movement-image of the movement-machine : Deleuze, cinema and the London Underground". Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2005. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1444758/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis addresses the London Underground in the light of Gilles Deleuze's philosophy of cinema. The first chapter gives an overview of the aspects of Deleuze's philosophy, which are of particular interest in the context of architectural theory. The main postulates of transcendental empiricism are explained, followed by the four major concepts: space, time, image and event. The second chapter deals with Deleuze's understanding of the cinematic frame. The relationship between the frame and the content of framing is shown as possibly inherently dynamic. A description of the major points regarding the Underground corridor follows, with the explanation of the condition of the walking body and its relation to the surrounds. Finally, the notion of the cinematic frame and acts of framing are utilised for the conceptualisation of the Underground corridor, showing the notion of movement to be of crucial importance. Chapter three regards the platform event in relation to the cinematic shot, which is explained to be a matter of conversion of movement. The specificity of the Underground platform is related, and the relationship between the body and the moving object of the train explained. The conjunction between the platform and the shot is then proposed, to show that the platform stands at a point of conversion of movement, transforming body's relationship to its environment. Chapter four is the discussion of the Underground carriage, and its understanding in the light of Deleuze's conceptualisation of the cinematic close-up. The close-up is shown to represent a specific, qualitative transformation, which marks the shift of movement in the direction of expression. The concept of any-space-whatever is then related as an example of Deleuze's transformation of the close-up of the face to the object and then to a spatial figure. The specifics of the Underground carriage are related, introducing the notion of the motionless body inside a moving confinement, as well as the presentation of 'facialisation.' The third part of the chapter sees the explanation of the carriage event in the light of the close-up/affection-image, and it pays special attention to the transformation of movement into expression. Finally, Chapter Five sees the discussion of the Underground in general, and its relation to the city. Deleuze's understanding of the concept of montage is explained in particular its relationship to time and construction of continuities and wholes across ruptures. The Underground is discussed as an urban system and its relation to the city that harbours it addressed. Finally, a particular understanding of urban montage is proposed, one wholly dependent on the presence of the Underground system.

Schilizzi, Paul P. G. "Monitoring and prediction of surface movements above underground mines in the eastern U.S. coalfields". Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/53658.

Abstract (sommario):
The increased impact on mine subsidence during the recent years led to the development of two semi-empirical prediction methods for the eastern United States coalfields. The methods are based on an extensive data bank, which includes a total of twenty three panels, from nine case studies, which were instrumented during this research effort. An extensive field monitoring program, utilizing a digital computer tacheometer, was developed and implemented for this purpose. The first prediction method using a profile function, provides a fast and convenient method for prediction of vertical movements above mine panels of uniform geometry. More specifically the hyperbolic tangent function is utilized, as adapted to regional data. The developed model is capable of accurate general predictions for the Eastem U.S. coalfields. The second method is based on the Budryk-Knothe influence function. The parameters used in this method were mainly determined from the monitored case studies. The use of such a method requires primarily a computer, however, it can negotiate mine sections of complex conditions and can calculate subsidence as well as any other mode of deformation on the surface. For the prediction of the parameters required for the application of both methods a number of relationships between mining and subsidence factors were established through the analysis of the collected data. Computer software were developed for the analysis of the data as well as for the application of the prediction methods.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Translating and reading western modernist literature played a vital role in forging contemporary Chinese literature and China’s mode of subjectivity, but little has been written about them, and even less about the interconnections between them. My PhD thesis aims to offer a comprehensive interpretation of the phenomenon of translating and reading modernist literature in Mao’s China, focusing particularly on translators’ and readers’ agency, and their collective construction of a multifaceted discourse of subjectivity. The central questions I try to answer in my thesis are: For what “practical” purposes or needs did the Chinese Communist Party order the translation and publication of these modernist texts which are clearly against the ideology of Mao’s China? What mark did translators from state controlled institutions leave in the intellectual history of China? Why did western modernist literature of 1950s cause such a strong response from the intellectual youth in the 1970s? In Mao’s China, there were a number of modernist literature texts that were translated and published. They were only intended to be available for a very limited readership consisting of high ranking party officials, but ended up being leaked, and eventually became extremely popular in the underground reading movement. I decided to focus on the three most widely read texts, which are On the Road (first translated into Chinese in 1962), Catcher in the Rye (first translated into Chinese in 1963), and Waiting for Godot (first translated into Chinese in 1965). By mapping the translation process and the underground reading of these texts into the context of the politics of China from the early 1960s to the late 1970s, my study provides three arguments which attempt to answer the three questions raised above: 1) Mao’s China encountered similar modernity situations so that western modernist literature after World War II was translated for internal circulation and criticism; 2) Thanks to the subjectivity of translators from state controlled institutions, their translations paved the way for the rising of the self, the end of revolution, and the individualization of Chinese society; 3) As early as in the 1960s to 1970s, the conscious reading of modernist literature brought alternative understandings of self and ways of being, and the sent-down Chinese youth have new self-projection by reading these texts. Few researchers have studied translation beyond analysis of target language text (TLT), while my methodological innovation is to connect three traditionally isolated subjects into a single continuing process of meaning giving activity: the source text and their role in forging western subjectivity; translators and their translations in Mao’s context; and Chinese underground reading of western literature from late 1960s to 1970s. This is a comparative and theoretical study of the three chosen texts in their historical contexts in order to reconsider the cultural significance of translating and reading modernist literature in Mao’s China. I hope it will modify our view of translation and reading history in Mao’s China, contributing to theories of subjectivity and the plurality of Chinese modernity discourse.

Abstract (sommario):
William Devonshire Saull was a financial kingpin of the political underworld. His wine-trade profits were as essential to the deist-cum-atheist Richard Carlile’s anti-clerical movement in the 1820s as to Robert Owen’s socialism in the 1830s. And Saull’s museum of fossils—forgotten today—was designed to glorify an evolutionary world with its promise of earthly salvation for the downtrodden. This opening section explains why the new understandings of earth history were paramount in the blasphemy/socialist movements, as it sought to shrug off clerical and capitalist control. It details some of the new, untapped sources for dealing with the subject at street level: police spy reports, the newly-digitized London newspapers, and satirical magazines, which left a wide class of readers laughing at Saull’s belief in a monkey ancestry for mankind. The introduction also touches on Victorian sensitivities to explain why Saull, his bankrolling activities and criminal enormities (atheism, socialism, evolution), are so little known. It gives a preview of Saull’s political activities: in London’s first Labour Exchange, in rational schooling experiments, in his materialism as a seditious, anti-theological weapon, and in his help for the emerging working-class activists resisting tithes and clerical oppression. ‘Atheism’ was never a stationary concept, and we track its changes as activists developed new vectors of attack. Science’s multiplicity of meanings for the underclass is also explored. The theme of this section is Saull’s gigantic, free-to-all museum and why it has escaped attention, and how we have to refocus to see it in its true dissident context.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractOne essential element of the Barcelona School of Ecological Economics is that it is entirely trans-disciplinary. It is a school nestled in the political activism of its intellectuals that has gestated in dictatorial times, connected with the anti-Franco Catalan movement, in the several underground social movements, and remotely connected to the Spanish Republic and the anarchist experiment in Barcelona. These are events that Joan has so often remembered to all of us, and that can be well documented in the book of one of his doctoral students (Masjuan, La Ecología Humana en el Anarquismo Ibérico. Urbanismo “orgánico”, neomalthusianismo y naturismo social. Icaria Editorial, Barcelona, 2002). For an understanding of Joan Martinez-Alier and the Barcelona school, one needs to know where they are grounded, that is, in the fertile “soil” of Iberian social movements for alternative livelihoods. The argument is that livelihoods are relevant for ecological economics, as the concept of a good life can prove. The latter is an Aristotelian oikonomic goal – remembered by Georgescu-Roegen’s joie de vivre – with its connection to substantive economics as opposed to formal, neoclassical economics. The good life is a degrowth objective too, inspired by conviviality – as formulated by Ivan Illich – and by the pluriversal notion of “buen vivir”, so well-known on the other side of el charco where Joan is just as much known and beloved.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT The prediction of ground movements due to underground coal mining and their impacts on the surface are important considerations that have been studied by numerous researchers around the world. The majority of these studies have focused on the development of different analytical and empirical models for the prediction and calculation of ground deformation indices for either flat or gently dipping seams under variable topography. However, a few studies are available with respect to the prediction of ground movements under dipping seam conditions. Dipping seam conditions have been encountered in some cases in the US, where the inclination (dip) may be in the range of 10 degrees or greater. Ground movements under such conditions are evaluated using methodologies which assume horizontal seams for their calculations. In order to accurately predict subsidence under these conditions it is necessary to develop an appropriate methodology that builds on the existing infrastructure. This paper presents a methodology that can be used to model subsidence under dipping seam conditions. The methodology has been validated with two case studies that are available in the literature. INTRODUCTION Although new alternative energy sources are being developed, non-renewable carbon-based resources still constitute the base energy supply for many countries in the world. Coal production, 69% of which corresponds to electricity and heat generation (Çelik, & Özçelik, 2023), still plays an essential role in meeting the worldwide demand. The reduction of open-pit coal reserves has raised the need for underground coal mining, and, consequently, the need to enhance underground mining methods and technologies. Although horizontal or near-horizontal coal seams constitute the majority of coal deposits currently extracted using underground mining methods, inclined seams are also being mined and will be mined even more in the future. Some countries, such as China, India, and Spain, classify high-quality reserves of coal as inclined strata (Afsari,1998).

Abstract (sommario):
<p>The current mega cities such as Kolkata, Mumbai developed over centuries from even before colonial times and they now consist of old parts and new parts. Though underground construction even in the new parts is not an easy task, in the highly built-up old areas with narrow lanes, going underground while saving what exists above ground is a daunting task. Such a situation arose while taking one of the lines of Delhi Metro through the area of “Old Delhi”. Monitoring the ground features, including old building and monuments during construction became essential. Underground construction, as carried out for East-West metro Kolkata or Mumbai metro line 3, demanded extensive monitoring to assess ground movement and displacement depending upon depth and volume of works underground, soil conditions and foundations of existing buildings and utilities. The paper highlights geology, protecting existing structures, ground movement, construction method, and safety aspects in planning and construction.</p>

Abstract (sommario):
Landslides are one of the main threats in maintaining pipeline integrity and depend directly on natural geological and geotechnical conditions. External factors such as weather, rainfall, and others, can trigger land movements and displace the pipeline. The Ecuadorian OCP (Heavy Crude Oil Pipeline) is a buried pipeline going in an East to West direction, crossing 485 kilometers of the Ecuadorian territory. It starts in the Amazon Region (approximately 300 meters above sea level), and then climbs the Andes Mountains (4060 meters above sea level in its tallest portion), to then descend to the shores of the Pacific Ocean. The OCP pipeline crosses many regions with varying climates, varying rainfall patterns, variable morphologies, diversity of soils, and areas affected by tectonic faults, among others. In order to prevent pipeline failures, OCP Ecuador has instituted programs to perform preventive and corrective actions in order to handle the following geological concerns: • Intervention of a specialized geotechnical team to identify and monitor critical points along the pipeline route. This team identifies unstable sites based on the observations of cracks, land movements, or other visual deformations of the pipeline route and its surroundings. • Upkeep of the preventive program. • Execution of third-level studies required to understand specific unstable zones in detail: nature of the subsoil, underground water level, geo-mechanic characteristics, stability factor, and stabilization works. • Geotechnical instrumentation used: inclinometers to search the spread of movement, shifting direction, speed, (landslide location); strain gauges for preventive control of pipeline strain, alert levels, efficiency of stabilization works; and topographic surveys to monitor superficial movements. • Data processing and mapping on GIS Software. • Annual over-flights to detect massive landslides. • Internal inspectors (online-ILI) providing a wide range of information: geometry measurements, curvature monitoring, pipeline displacement, etc. In addition, it allows detection of probable zones depicting soil movement. The purpose of this technical paper is to present the methodology applied by OCP Ecuador to prevent failure of the pipeline along its route.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Long-distance underground pipelines are inexorably constructed over harsh geological fields exposing them to geohazards resulting in both transient and permanent ground movement. The permanent ground movements caused by landslides, liquefaction, ground subsidence, slope failures, fault movement, etc., can result in large deformation threatening the safety and integrity of the pipelines. Therefore, evaluation of the structural response, i.e., displacement and strain fields of the buried pipelines exposed to the permanent ground displacement is a major concern for the industry. The mechanical and physical behavior of the pipelines subjected to ground movement can be described mathematically using nonlinear Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) by adopting the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory with large deformation. The model takes into account the nonlinearities caused by the pipe-soil interaction and pipe geometry. Various methods, including the Finite Element Method (FEM) and Finite Difference Method (FDM), can be used to solve the nonlinear PDEs and thus predict the structural response. However, the FEM usually requires complicated simulation using costly commercial software. Also, both the FE and FD methods are mesh-dependent. On this basis, this research endeavor proposes and utilizes an inexpensive, novel, easy-to-implemented, simulation-free, and meshless method to get the response. As a result, Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs), deep-learning neural networks that consider the underlying law of physics in PDEs, can be a potential strategy to deal with PDEs with high complexity. To this end, the neural networks thoroughly learn based on the incorporated physical laws together with the boundary and/or initial conditions, eliminating the need for large training datasets. The obtained structural response, applicability, and accuracy of the predicted results of the proposed method are assessed by comparison with the obtained results from FEM.
