Abstract (sommario):
AbstractAs a continuation of developing multiscale method for the transport phenomena, a unified gas kinetic scheme (UGKS) for multi-scale and multi-component plasma simulation is constructed. The current scheme is a direct modeling method, where the time evolution solutions from the Vlasov-BGK equations of electron and ion and the Maxwell equations are used to construct a scale-dependent plasma simulation model. The modeling scale used in the UGKS is the mesh size scale, which can be comparable to or much larger than the local mean free path. As a result, with the variation of modeling scales in space and time through the so-called cell's Knudsen number and normalized Larmor radius, the discretized governing equations can recover a wide range of plasma evolution from the Vlasov equation in the kinetic scale to different-type of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations in the hydrodynamic scale. The UGKS provides a general evolution model, which goes to the Vlasov equation in the kinetic scale and many types of MHD equations in the hydrodynamic scale, such as the two fluids model, the Hall, the resistive, and the ideal MHD equations. All current existing governing equations become the subsets of the UGKS, and the UGKS bridges these distinguishable governing equations seamlessly. The construction of UGKS is based on the implementation of physical conservation laws and the un-splitting treatment of particle collision, acceleration, and transport in the construction of a scale-dependent numerical flux across a cell interface. At the same time, the discretized plasma evolution equations are coupled with the Maxwell equations for electro-magnetic fields, which also cover a scale-dependent transition between the Ampére's law and the Ohm's law for the calculation of electric field. The time step of UGKS is not limited by the relaxation time, the cyclotron period, and the speed of light in the ideal-MHD regime. Our scheme is able to give a physically accurate solution for plasma simulation with a wide range of Knudsen number and normalized Larmor radius. It can be used to study the phenomena from the Vlasov limit to the scale of plasma skin depth for the capturing of two-fluid effect, and the phenomena in the plasma transition regime with a modest Knudsen number and Larmor radius. The UGKS is validated by numerical test cases, such as the Landau damping and two stream instability in the kinetic regime, and the Brio-Wu shock tube problem, and the Orszag-Tang MHD turbulence problem in the hydrodynamic regime. The scheme is also used to study the geospace environment modeling (GEM), such as the challenging magnetic reconnection problem in the transition regime. At the same time, the magnetic reconnection mechanism of the Sweet-Parker model and the Hall effect model can be connected smoothly through the variation of Larmor radius in the UGKS simulations. Overall, the UGKS is a physically reliable multi-scale plasma simulation method, and it provides a powerful and unified approach for the study of plasma physics.

Abstract (sommario):
The gas-kinetic scheme (GKS) and the unified gas-kinetic scheme (UGKS) are numerical methods based on the gas-kinetic theory, which have been widely used in the numerical simulations of high-speed and non-equilibrium flows. Both methods employ a multiscale flux function constructed from the integral solutions of kinetic equations to describe the local evolution process of particles’ free transport and collision. The accumulating effect of particles’ collision during transport process within a time step is used in the construction of the schemes, and the intrinsic simulating flow physics in the schemes depends on the ratio of the particle collision time and the time step, i.e., the so-called cell’s Knudsen number. With the initial distribution function reconstructed from the Chapman–Enskog expansion, the GKS can recover the Navier–Stokes solutions in the continuum regime at a small Knudsen number, and gain multi-dimensional properties by taking into account both normal and tangential flow variations in the flux function. By employing a discrete velocity distribution function, the UGKS can capture highly non-equilibrium physics, and is capable of simulating continuum and rarefied flow in all Knudsen number regimes. For high-speed non-equilibrium flow simulation, the real gas effects should be considered, and the computational efficiency and robustness of the schemes are the great challenges. Therefore, many efforts have been made to improve the validity and reliability of the GKS and UGKS in both the physical modeling and numerical techniques. In this paper, we give a review of the development of the GKS and UGKS in the past decades, such as physical modeling of a diatomic gas with molecular rotation and vibration at high temperature, plasma physics, computational techniques including implicit and multigrid acceleration, memory reduction methods, and wave–particle adaptation.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractAccurate simulations of high-speed rarefied flows present many physical and computational challenges. Toward this end, the present work extends the Unified Gas Kinetic Scheme (UGKS) to a wider range of Mach and Knudsen numbers by implementing WENO (Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory) interpolation. Then the UGKS is employed to simulate the canonical problem of lid-driven cavity flow at high speeds. Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) computations are also performed when appropriate for comparison. The effect of aspect ratio, Knudsen number and Mach number on cavity flow physics is examined leading to important insight.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractDue to the rapid advances in micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), the study of microflows becomes increasingly important. Currently, the molecular-based simulation techniques are the most reliable methods for rarefied flow computation, even though these methods face statistical scattering problem in the low speed limit. With discretized particle velocity space, a unified gas-kinetic scheme (UGKS) for entire Knudsen number flow has been constructed recently for flow computation. Contrary to the particle-based direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method, the unified scheme is a partial differential equation-based modeling method, where the statistical noise is totally removed. But, the common point between the DSMC and UGKS is that both methods are constructed through direct modeling in the discretized space. Due to the multiscale modeling in the unified method, i.e., the update of both macroscopic flow variables and microscopic gas distribution function, the conventional constraint of time step being less than the particle collision time in many direct Boltzmann solvers is released here. The numerical tests show that the unified scheme is more efficient than the particle-based methods in the low speed rarefied flow computation. The main purpose of the current study is to validate the accuracy of the unified scheme in the capturing of non-equilibrium flow phenomena. In the continuum and free molecular limits, the gas distribution function used in the unified scheme for the flux evaluation at a cell interface goes to the corresponding Navier-Stokes and free molecular solutions. In the transition regime, the DSMC solution will be used for the validation of UGKS results. This study shows that the unified scheme is indeed a reliable and accurate flow solver for low speed non-equilibrium flows. It not only recovers the DSMC results whenever available, but also provides high resolution results in cases where the DSMC can hardly afford the computational cost. In thermal creep flow simulation, surprising solution, such as the gas flowing from hot to cold regions along the wall surface, is observed for the first time by the unified scheme, which is confirmed later through intensive DSMC computation.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis paper is about the construction of a unified gas-kinetic scheme (UGKS) for a coupled system of radiative transport and material heat conduction with different diffusive limits. Different from the previous approach, instead of including absorption/emission only, the current method takes both scattering and absorption/emission mechanism into account in the radiative transport process. As a result, two asymptotic limiting solutions will appear in the diffusive regime. In the strong absorption/emission case, an equilibrium diffusion limit is obtained, where the system is mainly driven by a nonlinear diffusion equation for the equilibrium radiation and material temperature. However, in the strong scattering case, a non-equilibrium limit can be obtained, where coupled nonlinear diffusion system with different radiation and material temperature is obtained. In addition to including the scattering term in the transport equation, an implicit UGKS (IUGKS) will be developed in this paper as well. In the IUGKS, the numerical flux for the radiation intensity is constructed implicitly. Therefore, the conventional CFL constraint for the time step is released. With the use of a large time step for the radiative transport, it becomes possible to couple the IUGKS with the gas dynamic equations to develop an efficient numerical method for radiative hydrodynamics. The IUGKS is a valid method for all radiative transfer regimes. A few numerical examples will be presented to validate the current implicit method for both optical thin to optical thick cases.

Abstract (sommario):
The study of the evolution of the atmosphere requires careful consideration of multicomponent gaseous flows under gravity. The gas dynamics under an external force field is usually associated with an intrinsic multiscale nature due to large particle density variation along the direction of force. A wonderfully diverse set of behaviors of fluids can be observed in different flow regimes. This poses a great challenge for numerical algorithms to accurately and efficiently capture the scale-dependent flow physics. In this paper, a well-balanced unified gas-kinetic scheme (UGKS) for a gas mixture is developed, which can be used for the study of cross-scale multicomponent flows under an external force field. The well-balanced scheme here indicates the capability of a numerical method to evolve a gravitational system under any initial condition to the hydrostatic equilibrium and to keep such a solution. Such a property is crucial for an accurate description of multicomponent gas evolution under an external force field, especially for long-term evolving systems such as galaxy formation. Based on the Boltzmann model equation for gas mixtures, the UGKS leverages the space–time integral solution to construct numerical flux functions and, thus, provides a self-conditioned mechanism to recover typical flow dynamics in various flow regimes. We prove the well-balanced property of the current scheme formally through theoretical analysis and numerical validations. New physical phenomena, including the decoupled transport of different gas components in the transition regime, are presented and studied.

Abstract (sommario):
Strong viscous interaction and multiple flow regimes exist when vehicles fly at high altitude and high Mach number conditions. The Navier–Stokes(NS) solver is no longer applicable in the above situation. Instead, the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method or Boltzmann model equation solvers are usually needed. However, they are computationally more expensive than the NS solver. Therefore, it is of great engineering value to establish the aerodynamic prediction model of vehicles at high altitude and high Mach number conditions. In this paper, the hypersonic aerodynamic characteristics of an X38-like vehicle in typical conditions from 70 km to 110 km are simulated using the unified gas kinetic scheme (UGKS), which is applicable for all flow regimes. The contributions of pressure and viscous stress on the force coefficients are analyzed. The viscous interaction parameters, Mach number, and angle of attack are used as independent variables, and the difference between the force coefficients calculated by UGKS and the Euler solver is used as a dependent variable to establish a nonlinear viscous interaction model between them in the range of 70–110 km. The evaluation of the model is completed using the correlation coefficient and the relative orthogonal distance. The conventional viscous interaction effect and rarefied effect are both taken into account in the model. The model can be used to quickly obtain the hypersonic aerodynamic characteristics of X38-like vehicle in a wide range, which is meaningful for engineering design.

Abstract (sommario):
As part of the research on energy production through inertial confinement fusion, the development of new numerical methods is crucial. Indeed, simulations not only allow to refine the understanding of complex physical phenomena occurring under the extreme thermodynamic conditions necessary for fusion but also permit to assist in the design of new experimental devices. Within numerical simulations for fusion, the calculation of the electron heat flux is a central issue. Due to the extreme conditions of matter, the conventional Spitzer-Härm theory becomes insufficient to describe thermal conduction. Thus, to capture kinetic effects at a lower computational cost, moment models at the mesoscopic scale are used instead to describe the electron behaviour. This thesis manuscript focuses on the numerical resolution of these moment models, first in the simplified framework of linear transport and then in the context of electronic transport. The multi-scale nature of these models complicates the development of numerical schemes, which must accurately resolve all regimes : to do this, a particular class of methods, known as asymptoticpreserving methods, has emerged. One of the most recent and promising one is the Unified Gas Kinetic Scheme (UGKS) : this finite volume scheme for relaxation-type kinetic equations relies on the integral solution obtained from the method of characteristics. In this manuscript, a method is proposed to derive asymptotic-preserving kinetic schemes for moment models based on UGKS. The main idea which is introduced is to apply a closure at the numerical scale in the UGKS fluxes. In the two studied application cases, this new method reveals to be particularly effective and continuing its development seems relevant in order to solve more complex physical models. Moreover, its generic nature and flexibility make it a pertinent alternative to conventional asymptotic-preserving schemes. Moreover, some stability results are also demonstrated for this new scheme, and an extension to unstructured meshes is proposed

Abstract (sommario):
Artificial intelligence and machine learning have seen great progress in recent years. In this work, we will look at the application of machine learning in visual navigational systems for unmanned vehicles in natural environments. Previous works have focused on navigational systems with deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In this work, we evaluate the robustness and applicability of these methods for unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs). To evaluate the robustness and applicability of this machine learning approach for UGV two experiments where performed. In the first, data from Swiss trails and photos collected in Swedish forests where used to train deep CNNs. Several models are trained using data collected in different environments at different heights. By cross evaluating the trained models on the other datasets the impact of changing camera position and switching environment can be evaluated. In the second experiment, a navigational system using the trained CNN models were constructed. By evaluating the ability of the system to autonomously follow a forest path an understanding of the applicability of these methods for UGVs in general can be obtained. There where several results from the experiments. When comparing models trained on different datasets, we could see that the environment has an effect on the performance of the navigation, but even more so, the approach is sensitive to the camera position. Finally, an online test to evaluate the applicability of this approach as an end-to-end navigation system for UGVs is done. This experiment showed that these methods, on their own, are not a viable option for an end-to-end navigational system for UGVs in forest environments.

Abstract (sommario):

The goal of this thesis is to make an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) follow a given reference trajectory, without colliding with obstacles in its way. This thesis will especially focus on modeling and controlling the UGV, which is based on the power wheelchair Trax from Permobil.

In order to make the UGV follow a given reference trajectory without colliding, it is crucial to know the position of the UGV at all times. Odometry is used to estimate the position of the UGV relative a starting point. For the odometry to work in a satisfying way, parameters such as wheel radii and wheel base have to be calibrated. Two control signals are used to control the motion of the UGV, one to control the speed and one to control the steering angles of the two front wheels. By modeling the motion of the UGV as a function of the control signals, the motion can be predicted. A path following algorithm is developed in order to make the UGV navigate by maps. The maps are given in advance and do not contain any obstacles. A method to handle obstacles that comes in the way is presented.

Abstract (sommario):
Fusarium head blight (FHB) caused by fungi of the Fusarium genus is a widespread disease of wheat (Triticum aestivum) and other small-grain cereal crops. The main causal agent of FHB, Fusarium graminearum, can produce mycotoxins mainly belonging to type B trichothecenes, such as deoxynivalenol (DON) that can negatively affect humans, animals and plants. Several quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for resistance to FHB have been identified some of which have been correlated with efficient DON detoxification, mainly through the conjugation of DON into DON-3-O-glucose (D3G), a reaction catalyzedby UDP-glucosyltransferases (UGTs). Nevertheless, only few studies have conducted functional analyses to directly correlate DON glucosylation and resistance in planta and none were performed on wheat UGT gene(s). Our team, using the model cereal species Brachypodium distachyon, has recently demonstrated that the Bradi5g03300 UGT is able to confer tolerance to DON following glucosylation of DON into DON 3-O-glucose and is involved in the early establishment of quantitative resistance to FHB. In the present work, we transferred the functional analyses conducted on the model species Brachypodium distachyon to bread wheat. In a first approach the B. distachyon Bradi5g03300 gene has been introduced through biolistic-mediated transformation in the wheat variety Apogee, susceptible to FHB. The phenotypic analyses conducted on homozygous transgenic wheat constitutively expressing the Bradi5g03300 gene showed that they exhibit higher resistance to FHB as well as increased root tolerance to DON compared to the control line. In parallel, using a synteny approach between B. distachyon and bread wheat genomes we identified a wheat candidate gene orthologous to the B. distachyon Bradi5g03300 gene. This wheat gene after validation through gene expression pattern during wheat infection, was introduced by transformation into B. distachyon to rapidly determine its ability to conjugate DON into D3G in planta and its involvement in FHB resistance. In conclusion, this project contributes to increase the knowledge concerning the functional relationship between DON glucosylation and FHB resistance in wheat and provide candidate genes to include in selection processes

Abstract (sommario):
The basic aim of this mini-dissertation was to explore the prospects of digitisation at the University of Ghana Library System (UGLS). The research followed a qualitative approach and a case study research design was adopted. A thorough literature study was conducted. The primary purpose of the literature was to inform the research on the questions and objectives raised on the aspects of digitisation to understand the dynamics and complexity of digitisation. Six staff from the UGLS digitisation programme were purposively sampled for in-depth interviews for their direct involvement in the UGLS digitisation programme. Semi-structured interviews were then conducted with UGLS digitisation managers and the current IT and digitisation operations staff to collect data. During the interviews, the following issues associated with digitisation were addressed: policy, planning, goals and priorities, selection criteria, skills and expertise, digital preservation and long-term access, issues and challenges; solutions and recommendations to digitisation constraints of the UGLS. These issues were used to identify and develop themes where thematic analyses of research data were done. Specific recommendations were also develop to share with UGLS to address the digitisation policy and planning issues, selection issues, human resource and skills requirements; the critical challenges, resource requirements, long-term preservation and access of digitised content and the sustainability of digitisation programme. Final recommendations were made based on the findings and conclusions of the research to advise on the sustainability of the UGLS digitisation programme.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractUrban Green Spaces (UGS) have several positive effects on Public Health, environmental quality, and cities’ resilience to climate change; UGS are crucial in urban regeneration actions and urban health purposes. Moreover, to better define the UGS’ health impacts, it is important to define and guarantee UGS’ proximity, accessibility, and quality. Aim of the research is a quali-quantitative assessment of the UGS in Italian metropolitan cities, taking Milan, Turin, Florence, and Bologna as preliminary case studies. One of the 1st phases was to draw up dynamic and descriptive GIS-based maps of the relationships between density of population and of urban fabric, UGS’ availability, and their accessibility. Only the areas with a size greater than 15,000 square meters were considered; three buffer zones of proximity were defined: 250, 500, and 750 m. By combining the UGS’ availability with the population’s density, it was possible to quantify the citizens included in the three buffer zones. From the 1st analysis, it is observed that about 90% of the population is served by a quality green area within a buffer area of 750 m; 78% by the buffer zone of 500 m; 49% by the buffer zone of 250 m. Both the elaborated maps and graphs obtained show how population is not equally served by close and accessible UGS. Their geo-localization it’s a preliminary quantitative step (process started in Italy with the introduction of regulations like green areas’ census, mapping, maintenance legislation, and strategic plans), but it’s even more crucial to evaluate the UGS’ quality in terms of accessibility, safety and security features, provision of services and paths.

Abstract (sommario):
Inspired from the idea of developing lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), a discrete ordinate method (DOM) with streaming and collision processes is presented for simulation of microflows in this work. The current method is quite different from the conventional discrete ordinate method (DOM), unified gas kinetic scheme (UGKS) and discrete unified gas kinetic scheme (DUGKS), in which the finite volume method (FVM) or the finite difference method (FDM) is usually utilized to discretize the discrete velocity Boltzmann equation (DVBE). Due to the application of FVM or FDM, the evaluation of the flux of distribution function at the cell interface becomes an essential step for these approaches. Besides that, for the UGKS and DUGKS, not only the flux of distribution functions but also the conservative variables at the cell interface are needed to be computed. These processes require a lot of computational efforts. In contrast, for the developed method, it only needs interpolations within the cell to perform the streaming process. Thus, the computational efficiency can be improved accordingly. To compare the accuracy and efficiency of present scheme with those of DSMC and/or UGKS, several numerical examples including the Couette flow, pressure driven Poiseuille flow and thermal transpiration flow are simulated. Numerical results showed that the solution accuracy of current scheme is comparable to that of DSMC and UGKS. However, as far as the computational efficiency is concerned, the present scheme is more efficient than UGKS.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract As the Maxwell-type boundary treatment can automatically capture temperature jump on boundary, it is widely used in gas flow simulation like Lattice Boltzmann method and Direct simulation Monte Carlo method. In present study, diffuse-specular Maxwell-type boundary with a diffusive fraction (a), which decides the mechanism of interaction between gas molecules and boundary, is realized in UGKS simulation. This diffuse-specular boundary can recover diffuse Maxwell boundary when a = 1.0, which proves the reliability of present boundary treatment. The influence of diffusive fraction on wall temperature jump under Knudsen number ranging from 0.001 to 1.0 is tested. The test cases are steady and unsteady state conditions of heat conduction and Couette flow between two infinite plates setting at specified temperatures. It is found that: 1) for cases of Knudsen number ranging from 0.01 to 1.0, owing to the loss of influence from equilibrium part on evolution of boundary gas distribution, the relative temperature jump increases when diffusive fraction varies from 1.0 to 0.25, this phenomenon is especially obvious on extreme point part in unsteady state cases; 2) for cases of Knudsen number equaling to 0.001, diffusive fraction has no significance influence on temperature jump as the temperature jump is less noticeable for such condition. Present study will help the further researches of heat transfer in rarefied gas.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Throughout its history, the Utah Geological Survey (UGS) has strived to produce reports of the highest technical and editorial quality. To achieve that end and establish the basis for a certain degree of uniformity among the various publication series of the UGS, the first edition of the Guide for the Preparation of Reports for the Utah Geological Survey (the Guide) was published as UGS Circular 85 in 1992. The Guide was updated, revised, and published as a second edition (Miscellaneous Publication 03-7) and third edition (Circular 105) in 2003 and 2012, respectively. This fourth edition of the Guide retains much of the original text of the previous editions but incorporates revisions and additional text to address moving the technical review process into the digital age. Hardcopy review was not feasible during the COVID-19 pandemic and new review procedures regarding digital documents have since been adopted. Additionally, in 2021 the Data Management Program was created to address the increase in web applications and therefore the Website section has been substantially revised. Appendix B, Disclaimers for Use in UGS Publications, has also been revised by consolidating disclaimers having similar text and function, reducing the number from 11 to 7 disclaimers. Finally, various minor revisions reflect the ongoing evolution of English grammar and style.
