Abstract (sommario):
There are several types of truths. In this paper I focus on semantic truths, and within these on factual truths. These truths are attributed to statements. I review the theory of the truth proposed by Bunge and discuss some problems that it presents. I suggest that a theory of truth of factual statements should be complemented by a theory of relevance, and propose the basic tenets of it. Finally, I briefly discuss the nature of propositions and the problem of scientific truth in the light of the presented semantic theory.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Truth-makers are the dark matter of metaphysics. On the one hand, truth-makers seem obvious and necessary: if there are truths then there must be something that makes these truths true. On the other hand, it’s proven difficult to say exactly what these truth-makers are. Even defenders disagree about what sort of entity truth-makers are or whether all truths have truth-makers. Skeptics have questioned whether truth-makers are actually so obvious and necessary, or even whether they exist at all. Here I offer an account of this unhappy state of affairs and a modest proposal. First, I argue that not only are there no good arguments for truth-makers but it’s unlikely that there ever will be. Second I point to how much can be done without resorting to truth-makers in the first place: they are not as essential as often assumed. Finally, I conclude that we needn’t jettison the concept of truth-makers entirely. Understood in a modest and pragmatic spirit we can hold on to truth-makers while recognizing their inherent limitations.

Abstract (sommario):
Veritism is the thesis that the truth is the fundamental epistemic good. According to Duncan Pritchard, the most pressing objections to veritism are the trivial truths objection and the trivial inquiry problem. The former states that veritism entails that trivial truths are as important as deep and important truths. The latter is a problem that a veritist must prefer trivial inquiry that generates many trivial truths to the serious inquiry with the hope but no guarantee to discover some deep and important truth. Both objections arise from the inability of veritism prima facie to properly rate the different types of truths. Pritchard's solution is to approach the truth from the perspective of the intellectually virtuous inquirer who would prefer weighty truth over trivial truth. In my commentary, I criticise the proposed solution as circular reasoning. The necessary virtue for an intellectually virtuous inquirer is that they would prefer the weighty truth over the trivial one and at the same time, the weighty truth is superior because it is the goal for intellectually virtuous inquirer. I suggest another path to substantiate veritism in the face of the two sibling objections. I argue that truth is the fundamental epistemic good as it makes the epistemic realm practically valuable more than any other epistemic good. The weighty truths are preferable to the trivial ones because the practical value of the deep and important truths is usually higher. The suggested path goes away from the attempts to prove the epistemic value of truth only within the epistemic realm, yet I argue it does not compel the intellectually virtuous inquirer to seek the truth only for the sake of practical reasons.

Abstract (sommario):
This essay shows that truth cannot be divorced from human experience and an individual’s world view, his or her weltanschauung. There exist different weltanschauungen that favour alternative truths. Thus, loosely speaking, truth is determined by context. It may be socially acceptable to prefer one among the alternative truths as truly true, but this goal necessarily involves taking an ideological perspective on what is perceived and accepted as the sole truth. In other words, it is prejudiced. The truth value assigned to the proposition God exists starkly illustrates this claim, but in the course of this essay I demonstrate that alternative truths are widespread and that conflicting truths can co-exist within a community even when they create dissension. A hegemonic group will assert a preference for one truth over its alternatives, but that does not eliminate the existence of alternative truths. Alternative weltanschauungen need to be managed somehow, and the recognition that alternative truths exist is one step in their management.

Abstract (sommario):
Both the concept of “post-truth” and ancient scepticism link a plurality of irreconcilable “truths” to a certain disregard for truth. Post-truth phenomena are often deemed politically detrimental. This paper discusses how Georg W. F. Hegel rethinks ancient scepticism to avert similar detrimental effects, shows that Hegel’s thought suggests that a plurality of irreconcilable “truths” needs not exclude faith in truth, and that the modern state rests on both.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis comprises three main chapters-each comprising one relatively standalone paper. The unifying theme is fragmentalism about truth, which is the view that the predicate 'true' either expresses distinct concepts or expresses distinct properties. In Chapter 1, I provide a formal development of alethic pluralism. Pluralism is the view that there are distinct truth properties associated with distinct domains of subject matter, where a truth property satisfies certain truth-characterizing principles. On behalf of pluralists, I propose an account of logic and semantics that shows how they can answer central conceptual and logical challenges for their view. In Chapter 2, I motivate and develop a modal account of propositions on the basis of an iterative conception of propositions, where the modality is logico-mathematical. The modal account of propositions takes the conception to motivate an inherently potential hierarchy of propositions. I show that the account helps provide satisfying solutions to the intensional paradoxes of Russell-Myhill, Kaplan, and Prior. In Chapter 3, I propose that 'true' is polysemous. I suggest that 'true' is initially polysemous between correspondence truth and disquotational truth, and further polysemous between the meanings corresponding to the subconcepts of the concept truth generated by the indefinite extensibility of that concept. I show that the proposal provides satisfying solutions to the semantic paradoxes.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (PhD)--University of Stellenbosch, 2003.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this thesis an attempt is made to sketch the outlines of a cognitive theory of ethics, i.e. a theory in which ethical statements are a subset of descriptive statements. It is argued that the good is a quale, and that this quale roughly corresponds to what is often referred to as "pleasure". If this conceptualisation of the good is correct, then the resulting ethical theory is a cognitive, egoist version of ethical hedonism. The thesis proceeds by relating this conceptualisation of the good to economic phenomena. An investigation is then made of the conditions under which the following of a boundedly rational rule is preferable to calculating which one of the possible options available to the actor to follow. It is argued that one such rule is that "truth" should serve as a norm of inquiry. Next the issue of "altruism" is considered. It is argued that our intuitions regarding what egoist action should be are radically untrustworthy. Considerations from evolutionary biology and game theory make it clear that an egoist actor might well be best advised to perform a number of actions that would normally be termed altruistic. The next topic concerns the relation between fact and value. Arguments that claim to undermine the distinction between fact and value are argued to be fallacious. It is also argued that the correct view of the relation between fact and value can help to clarify some of the problems surrounding the conceptualisation of "objectivity". The thesis ends by considering the gains that arise from adopting the position argued for.

By observing the political transition in countries that have experienced an authoritarian regime or civil conflict during the years 1980-90, to be interpreted under the paradigm of truth, it is intended to determine how truth and power are articulated in the truth commission. This paradigm assigns to the truth notions such as human suffering, democracy, reconciliation and human rights, and it seems to privilege the truth commission as a transition model for reconciliation and healing of society. Based on restorative principles and justified by the discourse of trauma, the committee establishes an inquiry that has the confession of victims and perpetrators as a means to affirm a truth. This inquiry is assumed as a ritual of transition from a violent past to a future of democracy. In this ritual the act of confession sets new social roles of victims and perpetrators and, consequently, new power relations, necessary for the restoration of social relations and political reconstruction of the country. In order to better interpret this articulation, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa, an emblematic case in the development of this paradigm, truth/reconciliation and healing, is examined. It is intended to contribute to a critical analysis of this transition model: what it imposes and what alternatives it excludes. This study is based on Foucault s perspective, according to which the production of truth is a way of governing subjects, and the avowal is a technique of producing true.

Bullman, Lee. "Nothing but the truth? : truth, true-crime, genre and 'Blowback'". Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2016. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/34159/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Blowback, my biography of the international drug smuggler Michael Forwell, has, since its publication, been marketed within two commercially and culturally recognised categories, namely true crime and biography. In a commercial sense these titles act as signifiers of content, communicating in broad strokes what the reader can expect from the work, where it might lie within their own view of the cultural landscape and therefore whether or not they find engagement with the work appealing. In a practical sense (i.e. from the point of view of the practitioner, the writer), these categorisations bring with them expectations of both form and content, which influence the work produced within that category to varying degrees, either by their inclusion or their absence. I intend to look at these generic and cultural expectations in relation to my own book Blowback, as well as true crime’s most consistently popular, influential and lauded texts, Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood and Vincent Bugliosi and Curt Gentry’s Helter Skelter, in order to examine the extent to which these expectations shape the work. I will also engage with the work of relevant theorists, including Christian Metz, Steve Neale and Mark Seltzer. I also intend to provide context for both my own creative practice prior to writing Blowback and the extent to which the fiction I wrote went on to influence the ‘true’ crime described within the book. Any study of true crime must wrestle with the genre’s relationship with truth, a relationship I will contextualise via a history of the genre which examines its long, complex and symbiotic relationship with fiction. The true crime shelves are where we store our monsters, and I aim to investigate how those monsters’ brushes with true crime (and with fiction) alter our relationship with them. Interesting notions of truth exist within the study of biography too, and I will look at these where they apply to my portrayal of Michael and his world and where I, the writer of somebody else’s story, might be located within that world.

Abstract (sommario):
The article describes the theoretical understanding of the fact from the point of view of the main theories of truth, and also shows a different understanding of the facts and its consequences in real life using a real example. The theoretical part analyzes the correspondence, coherent, conventional and pragmatic theories of truth and what each of them defines as truth (fact) and as untruth (fake). The result is that truth (fact) is defined differently in each of the theories of truth, and therefore the same thing will vary depending on the system we will use. Correspondent “What is” can become “what is not” in another system, because “it is not considered or accepted” (in the conventional system), “not to give the desired result” in the pragmatic system and “violate” the established (coherent) system. The main object of the practical part was to understand the fact of the Budapest Memorandum, which was signed by Ukraine, the Russian Federation, the USA and Great Britain in 1994 as a guarantee of Ukraine’s security in exchange for its relinquishment of its nuclear weapons. The research methodology was a search in open sources of publications, news and statements of the leaders of the signatory countries, analysis of these statements, comparison and classification of facts. The result was that each of the signatory countries created its own reality (based on what it considered to be a fact) that differed from the reality of the others. This was shown even more clearly by the situation after the second, large-scale military attack of the Russian Federation on Ukraine. At the same time, the Russian Federation insists that it did not violate the agreement, and the USA and Britain still had to provide assistance to Ukraine to protect and return its territory, an obligation they previously denied. The significant conclusions of the study are that the understanding of truth and deception, fact and fake and the system in which they are applied is important because it allows in information wars to classify the created realities, and therefore to identify the main fakes or denied facts in order to fight against them. , aiming to destroy the constructed reality itself, and not only its signs in the form of separate, multiplying fakes. Keywords: Social communications, fact, theories of truth, constructed realities, factcheking, information wars.
