Abstract (sommario):
Trust is necessary for human interactions. It provides the ability to participate in risky behaviors without engaging in a laborious risk-benefit analysis about the situation at hand. The introduction of information and communication technologies has brought about new ways of communicating (e.g., text messaging, video conferencing). Despite the benefits stemming from the ability to communicate through technology, the lower quality and quantity of communication cues exchanged during a technology-mediated interaction can hamper the development of trust. This study examined the relationship between interpersonal trust and trust in technology during a technology-mediated dyadic interaction and aimed to determine whether interpersonal trust and trust in technology had different relationships with outcomes of interest. The Mayer et al. (1995) interpersonal trust model was augmented by including trust in technology. To test the hypothesized relationships between interpersonal trust, trust in technology, collaboration and performance, an interchangeable member dyadic path model was fit to the data. Three alternative models were fit to the data. Results revealed that interpersonal trust impacted trust in technology, which in turn impacts collaboration behaviors. Both types of trust had an effect on intentions to continue the interpersonal interaction and intentions to use the technology in the future, however interpersonal trust had a stronger influence on both intentions. The results of the study help us understand how trust operates in technology-mediated environment. Future research should focus on examining how interpersonal trust and trust in technology unfold over time.

Almoaber, Basmah. "Bootstrapping Trust Evaluation Using a Trust Certificate Model". Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/32141.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Trust plays a vital role in the decision to initiate any interaction. Rational agents may use past experiences and other agents’ opinions to decide to trust, but due to the nature of open multi-agent systems, where agents can dynamically join and leave the system at any time, agents may find themselves dealing with complete strangers whom neither they nor their friends have encountered before. This situation forces the agents to choose partners randomly, which significantly increases the risk of encountering unreliable agents. For instance, service requesters may become reluctant to initiate communication with newly-joined service providers. And when the newcomers are service requesters, who are willing to exploit the environment, service providers may also hesitate to start any connection with them. As a result, newcomers are excluded from the competition and old agents lose the possibility of interacting with better agents. In this thesis, we address that issue by creating a Trust Certificate (TC) model in which each agent is equipped with a certificate that works as a reference by providing information about its holder. The information is obtained and stored by the agent itself and is available to other agents who request it to evaluate the holder’s trustworthiness for a potential interaction. The stored information is about the agent’s role in the society and its performance in past interactions. The TC model allows agents to retrieve reputation information and make initial trust evaluations when evidence is unavailable. It also helps agents to avoid the need to make random partner selection due to the information scarcity. We show how this model enhances the interaction process between agents by evaluating it in the context of a simulated multi-agent system.

Ali, Muneeb. "Trust-to-trust design of a new Internet". Thesis, Princeton University, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10284026.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

The internet's original design, guided by the end-to-end design principle, pushed all application-specific logic and complexity to the edges of the network and kept the core of the network focused on the simple task of delivering data. The original end-to-end principle, however, did not explicitly account for trust and security. There are several central points of trust and failure on the traditional internet. These include root servers for the Domain Name System (DNS) and public-key infrastructure like Certificate Authorities (CAs) that publish security certificates. Further, the success of cloud hosted services in the last decade means that most user data is stored on remote servers and end-users need to trust these remote servers for correct execution of their applications.

In this thesis, we present a new internet architecture that explicitly follows the trust-to-trust design principle, i.e., end-users don't need to trust the core of the network for anything, and end-users can use applications and services in a fully decentralized way. We make the observation that cryptocurrency blockchains, like Bitcoin, can be used to bootstrap trust for new nodes joining a network. We identify the various limitations, like high latency and limited bandwidth, of contemporary blockchains and discuss how our architecture can scale by moving most operations outside of the blockchain layer.

We detail our experience of running a large production system on top of a cryptocurrency blockchain and how that experience guided our design. We present the implementation of a new decentralized internet, called Blockstack, that takes the trust-to-trust architecture from a theoretical concept to a production system. Deploying new systems by modifying production blockchains is hard because it requires coordination and agreement from several parties. We introduce virtualchains, a virtual blockchain constructed by processing data from underlying blockchains, to enable the seamless introduction of new functionality on top of blockchains without requiring any consensus-breaking changes. Blockstack is already powering several fully decentralized applications, like OpenBazaar; it's released as open-source software and, to date, more than 70,000 domains have been registered on it.

Abstract (sommario):

This chapter seeks to clarify the definition of trust and its conceptualization specifically at the team or workgroup level, as well as discussing the similarities and differences between interpersonal and team level trust. Research on interpersonal trust has shown that individual perceptions of others trustworthiness and their willingness to engage in trusting behavior when interacting with them are largely history‐dependent processes. Thus, trust between two or more interdependent individuals develops as a function of their cumulative interaction. The chapter describes a multilevel framework with individual, team and organizational level determinants and outcomes of team trust. It aims to clarify core variables and processes underlying team trust and to develop a better understanding of how these phenomena operate in a system involving the individual team members, the team self and the organizational contexts in which the team operates. The chapter concludes by reviewing and proposing a number of directions for future research and future‐oriented methodological recommendations.

Abstract (sommario):

The quantitative correlational research study addressed the problem of a lack of knowledge on the predictive nature or strength of the independent variables; trust in immediate supervisor, trust in top management, and organizational trust precursors for producing organizational effectiveness (OE) that can also lead to a sustainable competitive advantage. The study was conducted on a research division of a federal government agency via electronic survey format. The study revealed that in addition to significant and positive correlations among the trust and OE variables, the results of a multiple regression analysis for the model as a whole showed an adjusted R2 value of .6630, indicating that 66.3% of the variation in the dependent variable, OE, was explained by the independent variables. An F-value of 134.8, significant at the .05 level (p-value < .0001), indicated that the overall regression model was a good fit. All three levels of trust experienced by subordinate employees were positive and significant predictors of OE. Hierarchical multiple regression also showed that organizational trust precursors (Ba = .379, βb = .573, t-value = 8.310, and p-value < .0001), and not trust in top management (Ba = .096, βb = .128, t-value = 1.970, and p-value = .0508) or trust in immediate supervisor (B a = .120, βb = .245, t-value = 5.370, and p-value < .0001) was a stronger positive predictor of OE. Managers and supervisors will be able to gain practical knowledge that will aid in positive and productive interactions with subordinate employees within organizations.

Abstract (sommario):
Communication has developed during the years and is discussed to have become a central part in marketing, since it can be seen as the process where a company try to communicate the value of a product or a service to an end consumer. A relatively new way of communication is through the use of technology and internet, which has given companies new opportunities to communicate. Today does more than 91 percent of the Swedish population have access to internet. Businesses sees the online space as an opportunity to capture customers attention, which has lead to an increase in online businesses, also called e-commerce. It is more common than ever to shop online but the phenomenon can be seen as relatively new and therefore with potential risks that can affect consumers trust towards shopping online. A few studies have been done within the field of trust in e-commerce, however are there a lack of studies that suggests what variables that contributes to trust before a purchase, during purchase and after purchase. This thesis do therefore attempt to describe what it is that contributes to the perception of trust in e-commerce and which trust variables that are important throughout the purchase process online. This thesis is a qualitative research with a descriptive design. Based on theory about trust in e- commerce and the three purchase phases was a focus group guide designed in order to obtain data from six focus groups. The sample frame consisted of three age groups, which are based on statistics of online shopping behaviour. The study showed that trust plays an essential part when shopping online and that there are several variables that contributes to trust. Before an online purchase was it shown that variables such as word of mouth, information search, web design and delivery information is important. During the online purchase was information regarding price, delivery, return and payment but also safe transaction of personal information important in order to feel trust, where the online payment seemed to matter the most. After an online purchase was confirmation of order, delivery information, warranty and repair contacts considered to be the most important variables that contributes to trust.

Clarke, Stephen William. "Trust* : extending the reach of trust in distributed systems". Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/4330.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Building trust is a common requirement in distributed environments especially since many transactions now occur on a person-to-person basis. Examples range from e-commerce on the Internet to peer-to-peer and grid resource sharing. Many solutions to the problem of requiring trust among unknown entities rely on the use of a reputation metric to assess the risk of a potential transaction. However, such reputation systems require (often implicitly) that trust is transitive which can be a problematic assumption. This dissertation proposes a novel mechanism which we call trust*. The trust* model uses guarantees to extend local trust between unknown end-points. Trust* can be used as a substitution for end-to-end trust. Principals provide guarantees within existing (local) trust relationships to build a chain of localised agreements between the unknown end-points. The guarantees are backed by local micropayments to provide deterrents and incentives. Trust* relationships can be composed transitively, and the guarantees reduce the risk for the trusting party when doing so. This is because a guarantee is only ever provided locally by a directly trusted principal. Thus, trust management can be reduced to a locally solved problem. This work aims to develop a new technique for assessing and reducing the risk involved in trusting others in a distributed environment. The thesis of this dissertation is that an electronic analogue of real-world guarantees, is a useful and interesting way to provide these assurances. We develop an extension of the notion of trust, which we call trust*, which is built upon local guarantees, and which provides a novel conceptual framework for analysing and reasoning about a wide variety of trust-related problems in distributed systems. We present the concept of trust* and apply it to a number of application scenarios where it would be beneficial. We simulate the trust* model in these environments for analysis. Also, we describe the key features and other issues related to the trust* model which became evident during its investigation and which are of wider interest.

Abstract (sommario):
In the last few years, a remarkable technological revolution has been taking place around the world. Such a technological revolution is not just a means to the end of improving efficiency, but an important end of social order. In this work, I show that blockchain is one important example. I discuss that the success of a disintermediated transaction is conditioned on the level of trust in the rules-of-code. In what follows, the dissertation is organized in three studies. Study 1 is a theoretical paper where I present and discuss a model of how blockchain-like technologies can automate and algorithmically dictate the nurturing of trust. Based on study 1, study 2 is aimed to develop and validate a quantitative scale to measure each component of the proposed trust model. Lastly, study 3 is intended to investigate how telematic equipment can affect individual trusting behavior under condition of information asymmetry. The introduction of black box in the Italian automobile insurance market is the set of this study. Overall, the dissertation offers some major contributions for theory and practice about the dynamics underlying the development of trust in the rising era of blockchain transactions.

Abstract (sommario):
The growth of eCommerce is being hampered by a lack of trust between providers and consumers of Web-based services. While Web trust issues have been addressed by researchers in many disciplines, a comprehensive approach has yet to be established. This thesis proposes a conceptual trust-profiling framework???W3TF???which addresses issues of trust and user confidence through a range of new user-centred trust measures???trust categories, trust domains, transitivity of trust, fading factor analysis, standalone assessment, hyperlinked assessment and relevance assessment. While others now use the concept of transitivity of trust, it was first introduced by this research in 1998. The thesis also illustrates how W3TF can narrow the gap/disconnection between the hierarchical PKI trust environment and the horizontal Web referral environment. The framework incorporates existing measures of trust (such as Public Key Infrastructure), takes account of consumer perceptions by identifying trust attributes, and utilises Web technology (in the form of metadata), to create a practical, flexible and comprehensive approach to trust assessment. The versatility of the W3TF is demonstrated by applying it to a variety of cases from trust literature and to the hypothetical case study that provided the initial stimulus for this research. It is shown that the framework can be expanded to accommodate new trust attributes, categories and domains, and that trust can be ???weighed??? (and therefore evaluated) by using various mathematical formulae based on different theories and policies. The W3TF addresses identified needs, narrows the gaps in existing approaches and provides a mechanism to embrace current and future efforts in trust management. The framework is a generic form of trust assessment that can help build user confidence in an eCommerce environment. For service providers, it offers an incentive to create websites with a high number of desired trust attributes. For consumers, it enables more reliable judgments to be made. Hence, Web trust can be enhanced.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis aims to address several issues emerging in the new digital world. Using Trusted Computing as the paradigmatic example of regulation though code that tries to address the cyber security problem that occurs, where the freedom of the user to reconfigure her machine is restricted in exchange for greater, yet not perfect, security. Trusted Computing is a technology that while it aims to protect the user, and the integrity of her machine and her privacy against third party users, it discloses more of her information to trusted third parties, exposing her to security risks in case of compromising occurring to that third party. It also intends to create a decentralized, bottom up solution to security where security follows along the arcs of an emergent “network of trust”, and if that was viable, to achieve a form of code based regulation. Through the analysis attempted in this thesis, we laid the groundwork for a refined assessment, considering the problems that Trusted Computing Initiative (TCI) faces and that are based in the intentional, systematic but sometimes misunderstood and miscommunicated difference (which as we reveal results directly in certain design choices for TC) between the conception of trust in informatics (“techno-trust”) and the common sociological concept of it. To reap the benefits of TCI and create the dynamic “network of trust”, we need the sociological concept of trust sharing the fundamental characteristics of transitivity and holism which are absent from techno-trust. This gives rise to our next visited problems which are: if TC shifts the power from the customer to the TC provider, who takes on roles previously reserved for the nation state, then how in a democratic state can users trust those that make the rules? The answer lies partly in constitutional and human rights law and we drill into those functions of TC that makes the TCI provider comparable to state-like and ask what minimal legal guarantees need to be in place to accept, trustingly, this shift of power. Secondly, traditional liberal contract law reduces complex social relations to binary exchange relations, which are not transitive and disrupt rather than create networks. Contract law, as we argue, plays a central role for the way in which the TC provider interacts with his customers and this thesis contributes in speculating of a contract law that does not result in atomism, rather “brings in” potentially affected third parties and results in holistic networks. In the same vein, this thesis looks mainly at specific ways in which law can correct or redefine the implicit and democratically not validated shift of power from customer to TC providers while enhancing the social environment and its social trust within which TC must operate.

Poole, Adam. "Trust and the financial adviser : an examination of environmental trust". Thesis, Cardiff University, 2017. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/111715/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
While research has called for investigating the drivers, antecedents, and predictors of trust (Grayson et al., 2008; Nienaber et al., 2014; Sekhon et al., 2014), no research has empirically identified and discussed the factors that drive environmental trust and the impact of such trust upon interpersonal trust. Guided by agency theory (Eisenhardt, 1989) and institutional theory (Grayson et al., 2008; Scott, 2014), the first goal of this research is to identify the role of the two sub-components of environmental trust (structural assurance and situational normality) in predicting interpersonal trust (trusting beliefs and the intention to use a particular financial adviser) in the context of the UK financial advice industry. The second goal is to identify the predictors of environmental trust, more specifically, those of structural assurance and situational normality. The third goal is to determine the impact that demographic factors like gender, age, income, and occupation may have on trust, including environmental trust, by developing a conceptual model for environmental trust that extends our knowledge about this subject and closes a gap in the academic literature. Finally, this research provides insights into the role that environmental trust and its predictors play in the development of consumer trust, thereby assisting managers and policy-makers in developing the business practices and policies that foster trust. The UK financial advice industry is the context for this research; trust has been shown to be central in the relationship between consumers and their financial advisers, as many consumers base their decisions about purchases on their trust in their financial advisers (McKechnie, 1992). The loss of consumer trust in the wider financial services industry that occurred after the events of 2008 and other scandals, such as PPI mis-selling, (Uslaner, 2010) is an additional motivation for this research. Two phases of empirical research are undertaken to achieve the goals of the research. Firstly,a qualitative phase of research used focus groups and in-depth interviews (n=23 participants in total) to identify and confirm the predictors of environmental trust. The predictors that emerged included regulation of consumer and data protection, self-regulation, the organisation’s size, guarantees and warranties, prior experience, and prior knowledge of the industry. Findings from the qualitative phase helped to refine the conceptual model. The second phase of the empirical research tested the conceptual model quantitatively using an online questionnaire (n=302). This mixed, two-phase approach is common in academic marketing research into a largely unresearched area (Harrison and Reilly, 2011). The effect that the demographic factors of gender, age, educational attainment, income, and occupation have on the predictors of environmental trust are also examined. This research contributes to theory and knowledge by providing a thorough analysis of environmental trust in the context of the financial advice industry. This research:  develops and tests a conceptual model of environmental trust in the context of the relationship between a UK consumer and his or her financial adviser that demonstrates the impact of such trust on consumer’s trusting beliefs and intentions; vi  identifies predictors of the two sub-components of environmental trust, structural assurance and situational normality; and  examines and identifies the impact of the demographic factors of gender, age, education, income, and occupation on environmental trust. Therefore, this research extends the limited research on environmental trust by developing it in the context of the relationship between UK consumers and their financial advisers. It is also the first study to identify the predictors of environmental trust empirically and to examine empirically the effect of demographic factors on environmental trust. Several findings can be drawn from this research, including:  that structural assurance has a greater impact on consumer trusting beliefs and intentions than situational normality does;  that, amongst other factors, statutory regulation and self-regulation play roles in fostering structural assurance;  that, amongst other factors, some consumers expect the presence of a well-known brand, so the presence of such a brand can foster situational normality;  that, among the demographic factors examined, only gender has a significant impact; and  that the design of financial service providers’ business premises should reflect consumers’ needs for privacy, confidentiality, and data security so trust can develop. This research also provides a theoretical underpinning for environmental trust by demonstrating that environmental trust is a product of an interaction between agency theory and institutional theory, thereby extending the academic literature. The findings of this research also lead to practical recommendations for managers in the financial advice industry and policy-makers who are charged with ensuring the effective regulation of the industry. For industry managers, these recommendations include taking steps to reassure consumers regarding confidentiality by providing private meeting rooms and implementing a strict clear-desk policy, and to reassure them of their commitment to protecting their best interests by communicating their adherence to consumer- and data protection-related regulation. For policy-makers, these recommendations include improving the effectiveness of communication, as many consumers lack knowledge about the safeguards regulations offer, and about the superior effect of solutions that are based on statutory regulation in reassuring consumers following a trust-related industry crisis, compared to a solution that is based on self-regulation, given the scepticism many consumers have about self-regulation.

Howe, A. Tyler. "Principal Trust: Factors that Influence Faculty Trust in the Principal". BYU ScholarsArchive, 2016. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6237.

Abstract (sommario):
Principals are held accountable for student achievement even though they only have an indirect influence on that achievement. Accountability raises the question about what should be the priority for the principal's attention. The literature supports the existence of a positive correlation between faculty trust in the principal and increased student achievement. Our study considered the appropriateness of representing trust as a two-factor model broken down into components related to how teachers view the skill and the will of the principal. Additionally, our study examined which demographic factors of the school and of the principal affect faculty trust in the principal. This study examined historical data acquired from a large suburban school district in the western United States between 2013 and 2014. The archival data included over 1,700 completed surveys from elementary, junior-high, and high-school teachers of the Omnibus T-Scale survey created by Wayne K. Hoy and Megan Tschannen-Moran (2003).Almost all principals in the study were evaluated higher in terms of skill (competence, reliability, honesty) than in terms of will (benevolence, openness, empathy of vulnerability), and the data set fits a two-factor model of trust. Our findings show no significant association between the principal or school demographics and overall faculty trust in the principal, with the exception of a negative correlation between the principal's level of education and faculty trust in the principal. These findings suggest principals are not at a disadvantage to achieve faculty trust based on principal and school demographic factors.

Abstract (sommario):
During the legislative works on a new Civil Code for the Czech Republic, it has been proposed that the concept of trust be introduced into Czech law, largely by transplanting the concept of fiducie contained in the Civil Code of Québec. The thesis, after introducing the principal concepts of trust as known around the world today, whether in common law jurisdictions, civil law jurisdictions or mixed jurisdictions, describes the principal commercial uses of trust in trust jurisdictions and analyses the possibilities of current Czech law to replicate the trust function not using the trust. The thesis argues that the classical civilist objections to the possibility to implant true trust into civil law jurisdictions are largely unfounded in respect of the Czech legal system. The thesis further performs a comparative assessment of the Czech Civil Code proposal. It is argued that the legal construct at hand in the proposal is actually not trust, but a mere trust-like arrangement, as it lacks one of the trust's most salient features -- transfer of the trust property by the settlor to the trustee. Apart from that, the thesis analyses specific provisions of the proposal and subjects them critique. Based on this analysis, it introduces a number of proposals for the enhancement of the proposed provisions.

Abstract (sommario):
Fundamental economic and social changes have strongly influenced the conditions under which companies have to operate during the last couple of years. The dynamics of the business environment, which are among other things increasingly forced by the globalization of markets, development of new technologies and subsequently growing competitive pressure, requires that companies adapt to their environment not only reactive, but rather act proactively to exist on the market permanently. This means, that in companies radical change processes are not even uncommon in addition to permanent changes. Regarding the success of any change process it is of vital importance that the concerned employees and departments are involved in the success of the project and cooperate closely. For this reason trust is becoming more and more important in business environment, especially against the backdrop of economic crisis, of mergers, outsourcing, short-time work and job loss. The setup and permanent care of a trustworthy corporate culture, the content of which includes the constructive handling through management of the anxieties and emotions of the employees concerning upcoming changes, finally provides the basis for successful cooperation. Currently there is no scientific consensus about what trust is, how it can be measured, evaluated and influenced. These issues are now being investigated by empirical studies. Thus, the meaning of "professional" trust was determined by means of a quantitative questionnaire. One aim of the empirical study was to investigate the existence of trust-promoting and trust-inhibitory factors in companies and to generate rankings regarding their importance for the employees. The perceptions should be the basis to build and maintain a reliable culture of trust in companies, especially during the implementation of change processes.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis seeks to contribute to the organisational trust literature by investigating the relevance of trust to organisations through executive self-reports, and exploring the potential congruities and incongruities of these self-reports with the existing trust literature. Further, the study allows for the participants to introduce unique conceptualisations of trust in organisations that may not appear in the literature but might be worthy of further consideration and research. The results of this study begin to fill an existing gap in the trust literature by considering the perceptions of the most senior executives in the corporate environment. A trust typology is proposed (Chapter 5) which distinguishes between characteristics of genuine trust and surrogate trust. Definitions widely cited in the literature are analysed against the typology, and the executives' definitions are compared to consider congruities and incongruities of definitions. The dynamics of trust are examined (Chapter 6), and an optimal trust path for transactions is proposed (Chapter 7). The possible economic impacts of trust in organisations are evaluated (Chapter 8) and new conceptualisations from executive reports are analysed. The extensive use of metaphors by the executives to convey trust is examined (Chapter 9). Alternative configurations of trust are examined (Chapter 10) and a model for optimal trust transactions based on the literature and executive reports are presented. The final chapter argues that future studies may benefit from the findings of this thesis, including key considerations in defining trust for research in organisations, recognising that executives may view trust as an asset that is strategically invested like any other corporate asset, expanding the scope of trust and its potential economic impacts on the organisation, and developing new models for building trust.

MOREAU, GILBERT. "Le national trust". Paris 3, 1991. http://www.theses.fr/1991PA030031.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The national trust was created at the end of the nineteenth century by liberal-minded and progressive philanthropists and intellectuals. Its purpose was to preserve the national heritage (open spaces, the coast, industrial archeology and built property, either vernacular or prestigious). The aim was the permanence of the flora and fauna and the beauty of the land. The culture and the history of the nation achieve permanence through property of value inherited and transferred to the future generations in-perpetuity. The evolution of the economic structure of the country, repsonsible for the transformation undergone by the rural and urban landscape, has enabled the trust to mobilize a significant membership. Public concern has made it possible for the trust to acquire many properties by loan, purchase, gifts by donors at death or in their lifetime. Legislation has tried to reconcile greater access for the many with long-term protection. Both the transferring of property and its maintenance have required strenuous efforts in the negotiations with private owners, the government and its agencies and other voluntary organisations. The trust boasts a satisfactory relationship with whichever party is in power. Decentralisation and the devolution of responsibilities have been implemented; however, the degree of democratic procedure to enforce remains a source of debate. Constant revisions of policy and new challenges, if they are not felt to compromise the future, convince the trust that there is no room for complacency

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
In the ongoing debates about the reasons and impacts of the financial crisis 2008, trust is supposed to play a relevant role. Unaware of this future happening the economic researchers Paul J. Zak and Stephen Knack published a paper in the late 90's, where they tried to find a correlation between economic growth and trust. Their applied model proved that there is a connection between the level of confidence and the economic wellbeing, represented by GDP growth. If this is still the case, after the dramatic damages of the worlds financial systems, and if the model is adoptable to prove again the correlation with today's data, is the content of this thesis. With the help of a regression calculation not all the findings of Zak and Knack could be confirmed. Some show an opposite development, some have still the same impact and others are not statistical significant. But nevertheless it demonstrates that trust, and its determinants, are correlated to the economic progress of a country. Moreover is proved that trust can be influenced - negatively, by high degree of inequality, and positively, with a low degree of bribery and economic discrimination.

Abstract (sommario):
This Doctoral Thesis is built around these insights and the main objective is to define a theoretical framework for the analysis of trust dynamics. It is constituted of three papers. The first one is a broad and deep overview of the research on the topic of trust. The objective is to demonstrate how pervasive the concept is in academic research, independent of disciplines. In the other two papers, two models are presented, one dealing with a dyadic interaction setting, and another dealing with a social setting. Both models investigate trust dynamics with a particular focus on its primitives. The aim is to demonstrate how beliefs and preferences play a fundamental role in shaping trust and its consequences. Attention is also given to the social and cultural dimensions of trust.

Abstract (sommario):
Citizens’ levels of trust in e-government, has been proposed as an important impediment to increased utilization of e-government. Although there is a large amount of literature on online trust, no study to date has examined the impact of felt trust - a person’s feeling of being trusted - on the adoption of electronic business in general, or online government services in particular. No study has examined how IT artifacts on websites make citizens feel that they are trusted by the government, and how that “felt trust” could affect citizens’ trust in websites and, subsequently, users’ adoption of these websites. This “felt trust” construct, which is new to the IS literature, has received the attention of scholars in other disciplines; their empirical works, framed in theories such as Social Exchange Theory, Leader-Member Exchange Theory, and Appropriateness Framework, have shown that perceptions of felt trust lead to trust-related behaviour and other considerations (e.g., satisfaction and loyalty). A series of qualitative studies, were conducted to identify the antecedents of trust and felt trust. Next, a model of e-government adoption was tested using data collected from 254 participants in an online survey. Felt trust was found to be the most important factor in building trust, and trust fully mediated felt trust’s impact on the antecedents of adoption (i.e., perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and perceived risk). The convergent and discriminant validities demonstrated not only the difference between felt trust and trust as constructs, but also the difference between these constructs in both online and offline environments. The Information Systems research community should focus more on the construct of felt trust by investigating its influence on other outcome variables such as satisfaction with trustees (e.g. e-vendors), the productivity of virtual teams, and success of outsourcing relationships. Existing IS research findings can also be re-evaluated in light of the importance of this new construct to determine whether existing IT artifacts used or systems implemented to build trust were successful, not because they improved trust directly, but because they triggered felt trust, which, in turn, improved trust.

Abstract (sommario):
The phenomenon of media trust has been on the agenda of researchers for a long time. Today, with the growing amount of information and sources of information in the era of post-truth, the issue of trust in the media is becoming even more relevant. The previous research in this regard was presented by case studies and comparative studies of democratic, most often European states and the USA. The goal of this study is to look at the phenomenon of trust in the media through the prism of political regimes, democratic and undemocratic. The study aims to answer two research questions: What is the relationship between trust in media and trust in social institutions in different regimes? What affects media trust in different regimes? The theoretical framework is built, first, on the individual-level characteristics of people and how they affect media trust. And second, on the institutional theories that claim that the system in which individuals live also affects their level of trust. The World Value Survey data is used in the analysis. There are several important findings that the research makes. There are no clear patterns regarding the variation of media trust depending on a political regime. Trust in media and trust in social institutions correlate in both regimes, but more strongly in non-democracies. The same individual-level characteristics affect trust differently depending on the regime. Out of all the macro-level variables only perception of corruption seems to influence media trust.

Abstract (sommario):
In this thesis I argue that epistemic trust in religious authorities is different from epistemic trust in other kinds of authorities because God disturbs the two-party relationship between trustee and truster. I reach this conclusion by first examining the nature of epistemic trust in authorities and how it is justifiable to practice this kind of trust. I then compare these findings to the nature of epistemic trust in religious authorities and see that the general justification for epistemic trust in authorities is not sufficient, instead, God’s relationship with the trusting party, the layperson, needs to be taken into consideration in order to justify epistemic trust in religious authorities.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Contracts and trust are two of the most important concepts impacting exchange relationships. Although there is a substantial amount of organizational literature scrutinizing contracts and trust as mechanisms of cooperation, very little of this scholarship has been empirical and, thus, our understanding is very limited. The two constructs have been cast as substitutes by some scholars and complements by others, but this body of research has largely ignored the potential for an interactive effect. One such effect has been postulated by select organizational scholars, entitled the “contract contrarian perspective” by this research, who tout that the introduction of written contracts has a negative effect on trust between the parties. The apex objective of this study was to examine how contracts affect the existence and development of trust between bargaining partners. This inquiry tested the contract contrarian perspective to determine if the introduction of a written contract into a negotiation damages trust or retards trust-building. In addition, this research offered an alternative explanation for the contract contrarian perspective and posited that any negative effect on trust that may occur during the contracting process might not be the result the introduction of a written contract but, rather, of the disparity in the parties’ relative bargaining power or the asymmetry of their legal sophistication. As trust is a complex construct, the present disquisition separated trust into two dependent variables: goodwill trust and competence trust. This allowed us to examine how the introduction of a contract affects different aspects of trust, thus, allowing for more precise indication of the effects. Consistent with the contract contrarian perspective, it was hypothesized that the introduction of a written contract into a negotiation would produce a negative effect on trust levels. It was also hypothesized that both bargaining power and legal sophistication would moderate the potential negative effect of introducing a contract into a negotiation. The study employed a vignette experimental design methodology and utilized a sample of 220 participants from a contracted data collection service and the data were analyzed with ANOVA and MANOVA. The results did not support the contract contrarian perspective’s claim and did not support the hypotheses regarding moderation; however, this study did find that both bargaining power and of legal sophistication had significant impacts on goodwill trust and competence trust.

Häll, Jerry, David Ozdoba e Matz Thunberg. "BLOGGING FOR TRUST? An Examination of Executive Blogs From A Trust Perspective". Thesis, Kristianstad University College, Department of Business Administration, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hkr:diva-4494.

Abstract (sommario):

In recent years, blogs, which can be described as online journals, have started to reach a broad audience. One type of blog emerging has been the executive blog, which is maintained by a person holding an executive position within a company. Theory suggests that one possible area of use for executive blogs is to build trust.

The purpose of this dissertation is to examine whether executive blogs are used for building trust and if trust is created. A deductive research approach, mixed with some characteristics of an inductive approach, is adopted for the research.

Based on trust theory, three executive blogs are examined to see if it is possible to find indications of executives signaling trustworthiness, site design characteristics signaling a trustworthy environment, and readers signaling perceived trustworthiness. By using a manual, qualitative data collection method, blogposts and comments are examined.

The findings indicate that it is possible to find indications of executives signaling trustworthiness, site design characteristics signaling a trustworthy environment, and readers signaling perceived trustworthiness. Findings of how this is done are visualized in models. Suggestions for further research include examining executive blogs from a knowledge management perspective.

Since no study found by the authors of this dissertation has examined executive blogs from a trust perspective, the results of this dissertation may be useful to shed light on this possible area of use. The results may also be useful for executives who are blogging as well as executives who plan to start blogging, with the aim of building trust on their blogs.

Ford, Nicole M. "Measuring Trust in Post-Communist States: Making the Case for Particularized Trust". Scholar Commons, 2017. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/7022.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
While the literature on democracy and its relationship to trust provides little consensus regarding the role of trust, researchers have emphasized the importance of generalized trust over particularized in relation to democracy. This research marks a departure from this consensus, and exposes the neglected role of personal relationships in fostering successful democracy. One of the key measurements of democracy in a country is social trust. There are three forms of trust: generalized, particularized and institutional. Previously, the measurement of social trust focused on the importance of generalized trust, that is, trust in those we do not know (Putnam, 1993; Fukuyama, 1995, et. al). Generalized trust is marked as having the greatest benefits for democracy. Those who are generalized trusters have the will to bridge across ethnicities and join civic groups in larger numbers. Institutional trust is society's trust in its institutions. Countries ranking high on institutional trust are also believed to have positive democratic outcomes. By contrast, particularized trust is often dismissed because it is seen as highly atomizing and, therefore, incapable of making bridges to ethnic others resulting in a bankruptcy of democratic values. Thus, the combination of institutional and generalized trust has been the main crux of measurement and understanding in relation to a country's ability to democratize. The problem with this approach is two fold: first, it assumes the unidimensionality of trust and ultimately resigns a country of trusters to one category or the other with often negative impacts. The reality is, we are not solely one truster or the other: we are a combination of each form of trust. Secondly, this approach is Western in focus and does not account for the differentiation within cultures and is therefore unable to truly account for trust in a society. Nor does it account for new forms of trust and civil society in the new digital age. Recently, some questions about the legitimacy of this approach have surfaced and new methods have been employed to ascertain the true nature of social trust, however these methods have also fallen short (Gibson 2001; Bhary, et. al. 2005). Because trust is one measure used to determine the amount of democracy in a nation or the ability for it, accurate description is vital. Here, the author will take a new approach and focus on the importance of the often overlooked particularized trust, as well as control for the importance of institutionalized trust. Using Khodyakov's (2007) research on trust and the Soviet case as the launching pad, the author will empirically examine trust in the former Soviet Union today. Using the most recent World Values Survey data, a new trust variable will be constructed that will be better able to capture the true, dynamic nature of trust. Placing this new trust variable in a Bayesian hierarchical linear model which will control for country level variables, it will be revealed that particularized trust can and does have positive impacts on support for democracy, debunking current notions to the contrary.

Abstract (sommario):
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.
Automated systems perform functions that were previously executed by a human. When using automation, the role of the human changes from operator to supervisor. For effective operation, the human must appropriately calibrate trust in the automated system. Improper trust leads to misuse and disuse of the system. The responsibilities of an automated system can be described by its level of automation. This study examined the effect of varying levels of automation and accuracy on trust calibration. Thirty participants were divided into three groups based on the system's level of automation and provided with an automated identification system. Within the Virtual Battlespace 2 environment, participants controlled the video feed of an unmanned aircraft while they identified friendly and enemy personnel on the ground. Results indicate a significant difference in the ability to correctly identify targets between levels of automation and accuracy. Participants exhibited better calibration at the management by consent level of automation and at the lower accuracy level. These findings demonstrate the necessity of continued research in the field of automation trust.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis investigates logical formalizations of Castelfranchi and Falcone's (C&F) theory of trust [9, 10, 11, 12]. The C&F theory of trust defines trust as an essentially mental notion, making the theory particularly well suited for formalizations in multi-modal logics of beliefs, goals, intentions, actions, and time. Three different multi-modal logical formalisms intended for multi-agent systems are compared and evaluated along two lines of inquiry. First, I propose formal definitions of key concepts of the C&F theory of trust and prove some important properties of these definitions. The proven properties are then compared to the informal characterisation of the C&F theory. Second, the logics are used to formalize a case study involving an Internet forum, and their performances in the case study constitute grounds for a comparison. The comparison indicates that an accurate modelling of time, and the interaction of time and goals in particular, is integral for formal reasoning about trust. Finally, I propose a Horn fragment of the logic of Herzig, Lorini, Hubner, and Vercouter [25]. The Horn fragment is shown to be too restrictive to accurately express the considered case study.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2006.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The last decade has seen a continuing erosion of trust in business. Companies inability to realise trust in practice has created public cynicism and mistrust. This eruption of mistrust compelled business to ask why trust has become as issue of concern and how one can re-establish trust in commerce. The study will investigate the functioning of the concept of trust in business. Our hypothesis is that a move from mistrust to trust in the current business environment is only possible through a change in our understanding of ethics. A mere change in business processes or a tightening of corporate governance and compliance will not help us to move away from the culture of suspicion that is negatively influencing our business environment. We will propose the work of Emmanuel Levinas as an ethical alternative to the de-ontological and teleological approaches that are currently dominating our understanding of business ethics. Using some of his key concepts we construct what we call an 'embodied trust'. This form of trust is grounded in responsibility towards the other, and not in the rational sentiments of the egotistical subject. We complement this more philosophical approach to trust by building a business case for it by looking at the way it functions in various business instances. We acknowledge that a lot of what we have discussed is already an implicit part of what is happing in the business community. By looking at issues such as integrity, transparency I leadership, corporate culture, stakeholders, corporate social responsibility, branding and corporate governance, we highlight the existing forms of trust that already adhere to the discussed ethical requirements, and indicate the direction that business needs to take to cultivate this kind of trust in all its business processes. We conclude our study by giving two examples that will serve as illustration of our argument. The first being Regal Bank as an example of 'embodied mistrust' and the second being Allan Gray as an illustration of 'embodied trust'.
