Abstract (sommario):
This work concerns with the analysis of transit service quality on the basis of the perceptions directly expressed by the passengers of the services. The transit services supporting the research are offered by rail operators of the Northern Italy, and particularly by regional and suburban lines connecting different towns of the hinterland of the city of Milan, and express lines connecting Milan with the Malpensa airport. The experimental data were collected in a survey conducted in May 2012, and addressed to a sample of more than 16,000 passengers. Passengers expressed their opinions about service characteristics such as safety, cleanliness, comfort, information, personnel. The tool chosen for evaluating service quality is a Classification and Regression Tree Approach (CART), useful for identifying the characteristics mostly influencing the overall service quality. We found that service characteristics like ‘Windows and Doors Working’, ‘Courtesy and Competence on Board’, ‘Information at Stations’, ‘Punctuality of Runs’, ‘Courtesy and Competence in Station’ and ‘Regularity of Runs’ mainly influence service quality.

Abstract (sommario):
In the last few years, the technology re-evolution has deeply transformed several aspects of everyday life. For sure, one technology with a strong impact is the so-called Internet of Things (IoT). The IoT paradigm made it possible to break down the data barrier between the vertical domains on which the traditional information and communication technology (ICT) world was organized. Recently, the designers of home automation systems have begun looking to the IoT paradigm to ease the deployment of systems that are able to collect data from different plants. Such a situation has driven further evolution from the traditional automation system, where logic is defined by the programmer or by the user, to a cognitive system that is able to learn from the user’ habits regarding what should be the best configuration of plants. Several countries are funding renovations of public and private buildings for improving energy efficiency. Generally, such renovations are only focusing on the structure of the building and of its energy performance (e.g., the thermal envelope, window units, air-conditioning plants, and renewable generators) and largely ignoring the use of intelligent devices. On the contrary, scientific literature and practice have demonstrated that the wider use of IoT sensors, as well as distributed and remote intelligence, is fundamental to optimize energy consumption. This research work aimed to identify issues due the application of cognitive solutions during the renovation phase of buildings. In particular, the paper presents a cognitive architecture to support the operation and management phases of buildings, thanks to the massive digitalization of the entire supply chain of the construction sector from the single building element to the entire construction process. Such an architecture is capable of combining data from the IoT sensors and actuators of smart objects installed during the renovation phase, as well as legacy building automation systems. As an indication of the capability of the proposed solution, an intelligent window device was developed and validated. Within the Energy, Life Styled, and Seismic Innovation for Regenerated Buildings (ELISIR) project, window units are equipped with sensors to monitor indoor and outdoor condition behaviours of users. In addition, windows are able to react to changes in the environment by means of actuators that enable motorized opening and shading. Thanks to the cognitive layer designed in the project, the window is able to automatically define the best rules for opening and shading by using the local controller to satisfy user’s habits and energy efficiency targets. The cognitive layer defines the appropriate rules for opening and shading using the decision tree algorithm applied to the data generated by the sensors in order to infer users’ preferences. For this research, two prototypes of the window units were installed in two offices of Politecnico di Milano, Italy. The accuracy of this algorithm to classify the users’ behaviour and preferences was found to be around 90%, considering an observation interval of two months.

Abstract (sommario):
In this article we comparatively explore experiences and notions of retirement in two ethnographic sites of Milan, Italy, and Yaoundé, Cameroon, by paying attention to how grandparenting is perceived and practiced in relation to kinship roles and responsibilities. The paper draws on comparative insights from the ASSA project and focuses on Walton’s research in Milan and Awondo’s in Yaoundé, carried out between 2018–2019. The paper explores how both retirement and grandparenting can be embedded in social and moral narratives, gendered distinctions, and various idealisations, while also reflecting individual positionalities and economic roles and responsibilities. Our discussion moves beyond the family context as a unit for analysis, considering how grandparents enact care in urban communities and related online environments such as WhatsApp groups. After a brief introduction to the two field sites, the first section of the paper addresses retirement in Milan and Yaoundé, before turning to consider how grandparenting and retirement is linked to wider conceptions of obligation and freedom in these two different urban neighbourhood contexts.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Music historians are certainly familiar with the figure of Cardinal Carlo Borromeo. Important research has illuminated his association with the composer Vincenzo Ruffo, his reform of female convents, and, more generally, his influence over the musical life of Milan, including local churches and confraternities; more recently, Borromeo’s relationship with the musician Tomás Luis de Victoria has been closely examined. However, our knowledge of his role as a promoter of the so-called ‘Counter-Reformation’ in music is fragmentary. In particular, a comprehensive investigation of Borromeo’s private correspondence is lacking. In order to fill this lacuna, this article uses newly discovered letters (housed in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana, Milan) to illuminate several interrelated aspects of Borromeo’s activity as a patron and reformer in the aftermath of the Council of Trent: firstly, his support for musicians and the much discussed issue of textual intelligibility, and secondly, the prohibition of musical instruments in church and his directives against public musical entertainments.

Abstract (sommario):
The expansion of urban agglomerates is causing significant environmental changes, while the demand and need for sustainability keep on growing. In this context, urban and peri-urban agriculture can play a crucial role, mainly if associated with an agroecological approach. Indeed, the extensive use of living fences and tree rows can improve the environmental quality, assuring ecosystem services (ES), developing a sustainable urban food system and increasing local productions and the related socio-economic improvements. This study aims to assess the benefits of an agroecological requalification of a dismissed peri-urban area in the South Milan Agricultural Regional Park (Italy), by evaluating two possible scenarios, both involving planting trees and shrubs in that area. The software I-Tree Eco simulates the ecosystem services provision of planting new hedgerows, evaluating the benefits over 30 years. The study underlines the difference between the two scenarios and how the planted area becomes an essential supplier of regulating ecosystem services for the neighbourhoods, increasing carbon storage and air pollution removal. Results were then analysed with a treemap, to better investigate and understand the relationship between the different ecosystem services, showing a notable increase in carbon sequestration at the end of the simulation (at year 30). The study shows a replicable example of a methodology and techniques that can be used to assess the ES in urban and peri-urban environments.

Abstract (sommario):
A large part of the Italian population doesn’t receive adequate information and support on how to maintain oral health. In this observational, cross-sectional, pilot study, we investigated how some lifestyle-related variables affect oral diseases and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of children attending public-school summer services in Milan. A survey that included questions on children’s oral disease, OHRQoL and lifestyle-related factors (feeding habits, oral hygiene protective behaviors, dental coaching and socio-economic and educational status), was administered to the children’s caregivers. Data from 296 surveys were analyzed to assess the protective/negative effect of each variable on oral disease and OHRQoL. With respect to disease, the “never” consumption of fruit juice, the use of fluoride toothpaste, higher educational qualification and ISEE (equivalent family income) of those who filled out the form, resulted protective factors. Regarding OHRQoL, the “never” assumption/use of tea bottle, sugared pacifier and fruit juice as well as the use of fluoride toothpaste, a higher educational qualification and ISEE of those who filled out the form, resulted to have protective effects. In conclusion, protective behaviors and socio-economic status affect oral disease and OHRQoL in children of Milan.

Abstract (sommario):
A Life for the Tsar by Michail Glinka was staged on 20 May 1874 at the Teatro dal Verme in Milan. The paper discusses the impact this opera had on the Italian public, including some of the echoes in the foreign press. The style and dramaturgical content of Glinka’s masterpiece sparked off an authentic querelle which was similar to — indeed perhaps even more violent than — the one caused by Wagner’s operas, which were also receiving their first hearings in Italy. The increasingly frequent staging of operas from the Slavic repertoire brought to the fore a fundamental problem in this transition period. The insinuation of an extraneous element — which in the case of Italy immediately found a casus belli in Glinka’s A Life for the Tsar — necessarily meant acknowledging the inescapable crisis of everything which had heretofore been confined within national borders or had relied on a substantially Euro-centric viewpoint.

Abstract (sommario):
The city has become a space of diversity. To be sustainable, inclusive and less unequal, urban policy and policies must therefore take these differences into account. In this moving film, the female component represents a fundamental aspect. For a heavy cultural question, in Italy there has been a delay in society with respect to the idea of equal opportunities between men and women. Italy remains far from the watchword - mainstreaming - which Europe, on the other hand, has begun to develop and disseminate. And it is a European document that for the first time introduces the theme of the “right to the city for women”. There is certainly no shortage of innovative cases also promoted by female figures in Italian local administrations. In practice, however, a systematic overview is lacking. Apart from the issue of sustainable mobility, temporal policies are particularly important for a gender sensitive territorial planning. The interesting and innovative aspect is the transversality of the temporal dimension, both in the lives of individuals and in the social organization of urban space. The lockdown canceled the diversification of the times of daily life and the use of urban space: “time” considered a certain fact, never questioned, has become a precious, quality asset; through new rhythms for a new urban livability and mostly for a better life of women. For this to happen, however, the city must change its skin, it must change its thinking and above all its rhythms. And this is precisely the perspective recalled in a document drawn up by the Municipality of Milan: “Milan 2020 - Adaptation strategy” (Municipality of Milan, 2020). Therefore, a new Territorial Schedule Plan, whose specificity is the transversality of the temporal dimension. A new city management tool through the organization of time, from timetables to accessibility with particolar attention to the prospect of a “city 15 minutes away”. Promoting women’s well-being satisfies collective and community interests and improves the quality of all: women and men.

Abstract (sommario):
Evidence on comparative quality of life and housing of Italians at origin, and emigrants in two destinations was gathered from field research, and from three surveys: one, of residents of the town of origin (n = 153), Larino, in the province of Campobasso, and the other two, of residents of major destinations of Larinesi emigrants--Montreal (n = 118), and Milano (n = 73). The main working hypothesis was tested that the best quality of life is found among emigrants living in Montreal. The research also explicated the historical connection between policies of migration and housing concerns in Canada and in Italy.
Quality of life was measured using a battery of structural, objective and subjective indicators that were calibrated for relative comparisons between the two cities of destination by the re-analysis of two large surveys (Milano n = 966; Montreal n = 461), and by the use of of official statistics.
Multivariate analysis results showed that in comparison to the town of origin, Montreal produced the best and most distinguishable socio-demographic context and Milano the best geographic context. The objective indicators based on the ratios of income to need and those based on income relative to each city, are most influential in Montreal. Subjective indicators such as attitudes and lifestyles are more consistently related to levels of education than to place of residence.
High rates of house ownership among the Larinesi in Montreal, and changes in their patterns of use of space which accompany permanent resettlement--especially those regarding the use of an extra kitchen--were found to be explainable in terms of the "housing culture" of the town of origin.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis investigates the weapons and combatants depicted in the vascular and parietal funerary paintings of Campania and Lucania, whose production began in the second half of the fifth century and died out at the beginning of the third century BC. We intend to show that we can identify a particular military ideology visible through the paintings, which is situated at the confluence of the religious (eschatological), military and social spheres. The individual military exploit is celebrated through the composition called the "Return of the Warrior", depicting a horseman bringing back the spoils (spolia) of his defeated enemy, a key element allowing the deceased combatant to attain immortality. We will also see that the fighting techniques are focused on dueling. Single combat is the most likely to allow the victor to seize the spoils of his defeated opponent. The specifics of the battle as it is represented is characteristic of archaic warfare, which differs in substance from modern warfare. The paintings studied thus reveal a particular structure of the battle, characteristic of archaic warfare, which differs in substance from modern warfare. We will also be able to confirm the military, social and institutional upheavals known from ancient sources that took place in central and southern Italy during the last third of the fourth century, such as the Roman-Campanian rapprochement, the reform of Appius Claudius and the Samnite wars

ORTOLJA-BAIRD, Alexandra. "Where philosophy meets bureaucracy : Cesare Beccaria's social contract from page to practice". Doctoral thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1814/49327.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Defence date: 14 December 2017
Examining Board: Prof. Ann Thomson, European University Institute (Supervisor); Prof. Pavel Kolář, European University Institute; Prof. Clorinda Donato, California State University; Prof. Richard Whatmore University of St. Andrews
Cesare Beccaria, renowned author of the 1764 Enlightenment treatise Dei delitti e delle pene, has long been celebrated as the voice of the abolitionist movement against the death penalty, the founding father of modern criminology, and the go-to source on penal reform. These personalities have been fuelled by the instant global success of Beccaria’s text, however this celebrity trajectory has clouded many of his less sensational identities in its wake: Beccaria, reluctant man of letters, enlightened Habsburg bureaucrat and practical philosopher. This thesis recovers these entangled personas and, in so doing, provides an intellectual history of Cesare Beccaria that emphasises his substantial contribution as a philosopher, not just on the page, but in practice. Beccaria envisioned an ambitious social project. Proposing a vision of society in which the social contract served to protect “the greatest happiness divided between the greater number” and which was based upon a hedonistic calculation of human nature, Beccaria concluded that individuals had the equal right to pursue pleasure and that government was obliged to provide this opportunity. Interpreting this in economic terms, Beccaria presented a case for the removal of all institutionalised obstacles to the pursuit of wealth: while not everyone could achieve riches, all had the equal chance at improving their lot. His philosophy was the product of both a rich reading culture and intellectual network, which were simultaneously patriotic and cosmopolitan. On the one hand, local, specialised and concerned with matters of public utility, on the other, internationally, intellectually and socially diverse. However, the social contract was no utopian vision, but rather a blueprint for the political classes. In the field of public health in particular, Beccaria demonstrated his commitment to providing equal access to the pursuit of pleasure, abiding by the tenets of his contract at all costs. It is this practically inclined philosophy that the thesis argues is Beccaria’s most important contribution to the Enlightenment.

Abstract (sommario):
The Specchio interiore (Interior Mirror) is a work by the dominican Fra' Battista da Crema partly dedicated to the theme of mystical union. Written close to the foundation, in 1522, of the Hospital of the Incurables in Venice, it remained unpublished for almost two decades and it was first published in 1540 thanks to Ludovica Torelli, countess of Guastalla (1499-1569), alias Paola Maria. Widow, for the second time at age twenty-eight, Ludovica Torelli enjoyed an unusually powerful position for a women. Forced to sell her small state to Ferrante Gonzaga, she spent the second part of her life founding religious institutions and hospitals in Milan and other cities in northern Italy.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractIntroduction: The goal of this survey is to investigate the indications for preoperative digital subtraction angiography (DSA) before clipping of ruptured and unruptured intracranial aneurysms in an international panel of neurovascular specialists. Methods: An anonymous survey of 23 multiple-choice questions relating to indications for DSA before clipping of an intracranial aneurysm was distributed to the international panel of attendees of the European-Japanese Cerebrovascular Congress (EJCVC), which took place in Milan, Italy on 7–9 June 2018. The survey was collected during the same conference. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. Results: A total of 93 surveys were distributed, and 67 (72%) completed surveys were returned by responders from 13 different countries. Eighty-five percent of all responders were neurosurgeons. For unruptured and ruptured middle cerebral artery (MCA) aneurysms without life-threatening hematoma, approximately 60% of responders perform surgery without preoperative DSA. For aneurysms in other locations than MCA, microsurgery is done without preoperative DSA in 68% of unruptured and in 73% of ruptured cases. In cases of ruptured MCA or ruptured non-MCA aneurysms with life-threatening hematoma, surgery is performed without DSA in 97% and 96% of patients, respectively. Factors which lead to preoperative DSA being performed were: aneurysmal shape (fusiform, dissecting), etiology (infectious), size (>25 mm), possible presence of perforators or efferent vessels arising from the aneurysm, intra-aneurysmal thrombus, previous treatment, location (posterior circulation and paraclinoid aneurysm) and flow-replacement bypass contemplated for final aneurysm treatment. These are all factors that qualify an aneurysm as a complex aneurysm. Conclusion: There is still a high variability in the surgeons’ preoperative workup regarding the indication for DSA before clipping of ruptured and unruptured intracranial aneurysms, except for ruptured aneurysms with life-threatening hematoma. There is a general consensus among cerebrovascular specialists that any angioanatomical feature indicating a complex aneurysm should lead to a more detailed workup including preoperative DSA.

Abstract (sommario):
The chapter describes the incidence and features of poverty in the ten largest Italian cities. Exploiting the bulk of existing research, the chapter discusses how poverty is produced in each city, stressing the connection between the social organization of the urban life – including the economy, the social dynamics, the social fabric, the local politics – and the triggering of individual and household trajectories of impoverishment. Following an analysis based on maps that show how the disadvantaged population is more or less concentrated is some areas of each city, the situation of the three largest ones – Milan, Naples and Rome – is described in more detail. These three cities are very different from each other: Milan is the wealthiest city of the country, and here poverty transforms typically in social exclusion, while Naples is the ideal-typical case of Mediterranean city with a large diffusion of “integrated poverty”, but also of disqualified poverty and urban segregation. Rome is an immense territory with large dispersed and often isolated peripheries (the so-called borgate) where a highly vulnerable and variegated population live often in conflict with each other.

Abstract The subject for Poulenc’s only full-length opera was suggested to him in 1953 by the director of the Ricordi publishing house, while the composer was in Milan on a tour of Italy; it was Georges Bernanos’s posthumously published scenario for a film, itself based on prior literary treatments of a true episode of the French Revolution: the martyrdom of sixteen Carmelite nuns who were guillotined on 17 July 1794, going to their death while singing the Veni Creator. Poulenc, who had been searching for a libretto, took to the suggestion eagerly and set Bernanos’s words directly to music, after shaping them to his purpose. He worked with great enthusiasm, though not without interruptions due to personal as well as legal, copyright problems. The premiere, in Italian, took place at La Scala on 26 January 1957 and was hailed by Le Monde in Paris as “A great international event. A great French victory.” The first performance in French took place on 21 June, after which Poulenc’s Carmelites was on its way to a notable international career. Massimo Mila (1910-88), Italy’s most distinguished music critic at the time, covered the Scala premiere for the weekly L’Espresso. His is by no means a rave review, but it helps to recreate for us admirably the effect Poulenc’s opera had on sophisticated European ears, inured to the problematic musical scene of the late 1950s. The Darmstadt avant-garde was in full cry. How to account for a major work by a retrospective composer like Poulenc?

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract During the fourth century, the increasing importance of north Italy as an administrative and military centre had been accompanied, as at Trier and the Rhineland, and in parts of Pannonia, by a transformation of the social and economic life of the region. The solid agricultural opulence familiar from the time of the early empire had given place to—or rather had now to coexist with—a society which was to a high degree mobile and cosmopolitan. The imperial administration offered its opportunities to men of talent and education, who came to the area from all parts of the Roman empire to work as functionaries and officials; new industrial occupations had been brought into the region, for instance by the foundation of mints and armament factories (with all that this implies for supply and transport facilities); and the soldiers stationed in the area made their own contribution to the new population, their diverse nationalities often adding to it a distinctly exotic flavour. At Vercellae, for instance, was a garrison of Armenian troops; by the early fifth century, Sarmatian detachments were posted at Patavium, Cremona, Vercellae, Bononia, Pollentia, and half a dozen other places across north Italy; while a Christian cemetery at Concordia produced numerous inscribed sarcophagi from the fourth and early fifth centuries, showing the coexistence of the civilian population with soldiers, officials, and immigrants from many regions of the empire, even from outside its borders—from Syrians to Batavians, Heruli and Ostrogoths.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter focuses on interculturalism in the context of emerging national and local models of incorporating international migrants in Italy, and the city of Milan more specifically. Italy is a latecomer in the debate on immigrant policies, but it is nevertheless an interesting case because (1) it has no policy legacy in this field and does not have an explicit and consistent immigrant policy; (2) it is at the forefront of localising migration policy in Europe; and (3) it explicitly uses an intercultural approach that is not based on a retreat from multiculturalism. Although interculturalism is often presented as a consistent policy approach, which seeks a middle ground between assimilationist and multiculturalist models, in Italy, interculturalism is a form of assimilationism that works through an implicit subordination of immigrant rights and life chances to the goal of social cohesion.

Abstract (sommario):
Carlo Cattaneo (1801–69), who belonged to Mazzini's generation, took an active part in the Risorgimento, wrote important works in many fields, and became a leader of the national rising in his native Milan in 1848. Like Mazzini he had to flee, and settled in Lugano in Italian Switzerland. Unlike Mazzini, Cattaneo preferred to see a federal, not a unitary Italy. A principled republican, no less pure in his belief in democracy than Mazzini, he thought a federal and decentralized structure more appropriate for Italy, and opposed Mazzini's vision of a centralized democracy of individual citizens. Though Cattaneo lived the rest of his life in Switzerland and in 1858 was granted honorary Swiss nationality, this chapter argues that he never accepted the Swiss concept of liberty, Gemeindefreiheit (communal liberty). This communal democracy frustrated his reform schemes and exasperated him personally.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter summarises other long-period weather observations from both the British Isles and Europe. The Radcliffe Observatory possesses the longest continuous series of weather records in Britain for one site: the first observations date from the mid-1760s, with unbroken daily temperature records since November 1813. It includes references to Gordon Manley’s Central England Temperature series. There are brief descriptions of the longest-running weather stations in Europe, including Uppsala and Stockholm in Sweden, Padua and Milan in Italy, Hohenpeissenberg in Germany, and the British observatories at Kew, Armagh and Durham, many (like Oxford) starting life as astronomical observatories in the eighteenth or early nineteenth centuries. The chapter ends with a brief comment as to why such long weather records remain important in the present day.

Abstract (sommario):
In the last years, a new phase of economic crisis, which is concerning sectors of manufacturing industries, is affecting Europe. Focusing on Italy, sectors which have strongly characterized our country, such as textile and accessories, are facing with an fluctuating period of crisis. Also in this case, as it happened from late ‘80s, the urban structures and identities are seriously affected and need interventions of regeneration in order to gain new life both from social, productive and commercial point of views. Having in mind the Italian case, while the first phase identified had the characteristics of a disruptive macro-phenomenon, the second phase is more subtle and gradual. In this paper we are going to focus on changes of design culture in light of these urban phenomena. While we can already make a first evaluation of regeneration projects developed after the crisis of heavy industry sectors, the most recent events of industrial recession and the consequent regeneration of the correspondent empty areas are still ongoing. In order to analyze and, where it is possible, compare these two phases, we are going to look at two Italian case studies. The first is Bicocca, an area of Milan, which in the ‘90s was interested by a massive plan of regeneration and transformation after the closure of Breda and Pirelli industries. The second is Biella, a Piedmont Province city, which has been one of the most important centers for the textile and wool industry; the crisis of this sector strongly emerged in the first years on 2000 even if it had already begun between ‘80s and ‘90s when the biggest textile factories closed down. The differences between these two examples are not merely physical and dimensional but are clearly influenced by a different timing in the regeneration processes, which occurred in these areas (or, in the case of Biella, is still occurring). The analysis proposed in this paper will be focus on the action-research developed within two didactic experiences. Notwithstanding the distinctions in terms of objectives and actors involved, in this paper we are going to delineate a systemic approach to study and design for the regeneration, improvement and innovation of places. We will try to understand if, through strategic design, it is possible to identify those soft levers and interventions able to rejoin the pieces of places, which lost their functionality and identity.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/IFDP.2016.3284
