Abstract (sommario):
This article studies linguistic landscape (LL) from a translational perspective. It aims to examine the translation strategies adopted in translating texts on non-official public signs and assess the quality of their translations. For accomplishing this, the author analysed a corpus of one hundred photos of public signage representing bilingual (translational) content based on two criteria. Namely, the translation strategies employed in translating public signs and the appropriateness of public signage translations for their target readers. The study concludes that several translation strategies are used to convey the informative content of public signs, such as transference, word-for-word translation, generalisation, and omission. Furthermore, the study reveals cases of inaccurate translations that can be attributed to the translator’s linguistic incompetence, improper use of translation strategies, and linguistic incompatibilities between English and Arabic. Such mistranslations distort the informative content of the original text and give rise to different interpretations. The study’s implication is to draw attention to the importance of translational content of public signs as it serves as a medium of communication and reflects the image of linguistic cityscape.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper points on the use of design thinking in fundamental translation class. Design thinking is an approach to produce the best solution of a problem. This approach includes five steps, namely empathize, define (the problem), ideate, prototype, and test. The researchers focus on the translation’s acceptability of idioms since this topic is usually problematic to students. Therefore, a case study was conducted in this research. The participants of this research were 20 students of fundamental translation class in English Literature Study Program, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman. The students translated some idioms using design thinking and their translations were randomly selected. Observation was conducted to examine the students’ behaviours in translating idioms. After that, the researchers rated their translations’ acceptability. The results indicate that design thinking’s application in translating idioms produce acceptable translations. Furthermore, this study can be beneficial for translators and translation teachers to gain acceptability in translation.

Scott, Clive. "Rhythm in translation, with two accounts of Leconte de Lisle’s ‘Midi’". Journal of European Studies 50, n. 1 (26 febbraio 2020): 91–105. http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/0047244119892858.

Abstract (sommario):
This article explores the translation of poetic rhythm: not the rhythm of the source text, but the rhythm of the translational act itself. This re-conception of translation’s rhythmic task is enabled by a translation designed for the polyglot, rather than for the monoglot, reader. In this new understanding of translational process, rhythm not only embodies the perceptual and cognitive experience of the translating subject, it also makes more intimate the relationship between language and voice, the linguistic and the paralinguistic. Furthermore, it has as much to do with the space of translation, its distribution on the page, as with its changing temporal modes. The translator, then, does not translate the rhythm of a text so much as a text’s capacity for rhythm, and that capacity includes both espousing the perspective of a translating ‘I’ and releasing what is not linguistically manifest in the source text. These propositions are tested in two translations of Leconte de Lisle’s ‘Midi’.

Abstract The paper describes the process of a literary work’s perception from the perspective of transformations made in Polish translations of H.C. Andersens’s work. The author presents the historical perspective of translating Andersen into Polish in the 19th and 20th century and, based on selected examples, analyzes such essential issues within the realm of artistic translation as translation policy/publishing policy as well as the translator’s culture-formative role and tasks. The analyzed issues also include recent and older translations, the culture of translation and, last but not least, the role of translational and literary criticism in the reception process.

Abstract (sommario):
Secondary translations of Turkish literary works represent a unique translational chal- lenge, considering that the original text is written in a language that differs significantly in structure from the Indo-European languages, from which these translations are mostly made. By contrasting the Turkish onomastic words with their transcription into Serbian, the prob- lems of the translation appear when translating from a translation. Although in the transla- tion of Turkish works from English and German, the language of the mediator, a considerable number of correctly chosen solutions can be found in the transcription of anthroponyms and toponyms, the analysis carried out shows that the occurring errors are most often due to the nature of the language of the mediator or due to the negligence of the translator. This situation supports translators’ opinion that translating from a translation should be used only when direct translation is not possible.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractEarlier studies have corroborated that human translation exhibits unique linguistic features, usually referred to as translationese. However, research on machine translationese, in spite of some sparse efforts, is still in its infancy. By comparing machine translation with human translation and original target language texts, this study aims to investigate if machine translation has unique linguistic features of its own too, to what extent machine translations are different from human translations and target-language originals, and what characteristics are typical of machine translations. To this end, we collected a corpus containing English translations of modern Chinese literary texts produced by neural machine translation systems and human professional translators and comparable original texts in the target language. Based on the corpus, a quantitative study of discourse coherence was conducted by observing metrics in three dimensions borrowed from Coh-Metrix, including connectives, latent semantic analysis and the situation/mental model. The results support the existence of translationese in both human and machine translations when they are compared with original texts. However, machine translationese is not the same as human translationese in some metrics of discourse coherence. Additionally, machine translation systems, such as Google and DeepL, when compared with each other, show unique features in some coherence metrics, although on the whole they are not significantly different from each other in those coherence metrics.

Abstract: This article examines the English and Vietnamese translations of Calomnies and their attempts to make Linda Lê legible through paratextual elements and different translation approaches. Bearing in mind Lê's consistent refusal of identification according to her birth country or language choice, we use Lawrence Venuti's theories of foreignization and domestication to consider how the two translations, the media and publishing industries market Lê for cultural consumption – either as a foreign author or as a familiar figure. Attending to the different strategies of translating the term métèque , we reveal translation's underlying cultural untranslatability and textual resistance.

Abstract (sommario):
The study aims at filling the gap in the translation of Quranic verses concerning social etiquette[1]. Translating culture specific items (CSIs) can be challenging because certain elements have meanings particular to the culture and the language in which they appear. These meanings do not exist necessarily in other cultures. Translation strategies tend to solve translational problems by applying specific procedures to the translated text. The article at hand has studied the translation strategies used by seven translations of the Holy Quran relating to social etiquette, based on the selection of Quranic verses pertaining to social etiquette as followed by practicing Muslims through analyzing nine English translations from 1930 to 2009. It is found that the dominant translation strategy is the literal translation, with 89% of all strategies in preference to other strategies such as free translation, neutralization, paraphrasing, lexical creation, and adaptation.[1] Eittquette is defined as “a set of customs and rules for polite behaviour, especially among a particular class of people” Collins (2022).

Abstract (sommario):
This study explores the performance of machine translation of literary texts from English to Chinese. The study compares two machine translation systems, Bing Translator and Youdao Machine Translation, using selected texts from the novel “Nineteen eighty-four” by George Orwell. The data collection includes the original source texts, their machine-generated translations by Bing Translator and Youdao Machine Translation, and comparisons with human reference translations to assess the performance of these systems. The research’s focal point is to evaluate the accuracy, fluency, and appropriateness of translations generated by these two machine translation systems, while also analyzing the post-editing effort required to enhance the quality of the final machine-translated product. The study revealed that despite the presence of flaws in both machine translation systems, Youdao Machine Translation demonstrated superior performance, especially in accurately translating technical terms and idiomatic expressions, making it the more effective option overall. Nevertheless, the translations from Youdao Machine Translation required more substantial post-editing efforts to improve fluency and readability. Conversely, Bing Translator yielded more fluent and natural-sounding translations, albeit with a need for improved accuracy in translating technical terms and idiomatic expressions. The study concludes that while machine translation systems are capable of generating reasonable translations for literary texts, human post-editing remains essential to ensure the final output’s accuracy, fluency, and appropriateness. The study underscores the importance of selecting the appropriate machine translation system based on the nature of the text being translated. It also highlights the critical role of post-editing in refining the quality of machine-translated outputs, suggesting that while machine translation can provide a solid foundation, human intervention is indispensable for achieving optimal accuracy, fluency, and overall readability in literary translations.

The rapid development of novel translations causes shifts in the word structure such as idioms where the meaning cannot be translated literally; thus, some strategies are needed in translating these idioms from the source language to the target language. This study aimed at identifying and analyzing the strategies used in idiom translating and the most dominant strategy used in “Perahu Kertas” novel by Dee Lestari to the English translated version translated by Tiffany Tsao. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative where the collected data later be analyzed according to Baker’s idiom translation. The results showed that 9 translations using similar meaning and form strategy, 8 translations using similar meaning and dissimilar form, 23 translations by paraphrasing, and 8 translations by omission. The paraphrasing was the most used strategy in this translation with a percentage of 48%.

In this article, translation is approached as a reflection of translational, translatorial, and translation-theoretical myths in their different manifestations with varying truth value. Drawing on insights from the philosophy of science and semiotics, the mythical aspect of translating and translations is first discussed with respect to the role of myths in science and research and to the nature of translation-theoretical knowledge. The author then focuses on the following questions: is translating a case of action that conveys the general or the particular; is “myth” a type of speech even in Translation Studies and a building block in the cosmology of translation; what is the status of dichotomies in translating and translation strategies, in translation studies, and in the work of translation theorists; and finally, what makes a translation-theoretical myth a living myth.

The translation of Chinese medical books is characterized by language, cultural connotation and cognitive domain background, which makes the translators encounter different levels of difficulty in the process of translation and form different translations accordingly. This paper takes the construal theory in cognitive linguistics as a guide, analyzes the important role of four kinds of means of construal in the process of translating Chinese medical books, and analyzes the different English translations of JGL under the construal theory, analyzes that different translations reflect different cognitive mechanisms of the translators, and comes to the conclusion that the translations should maximally reflect the cognitive points of reference of the authors at that time, so as to maximize the translations. It is also concluded that the translation should maximally reflect the author's cognitive reference point so as to maximize the closeness of the translation to the original text, aiming to provide theoretical guidance and reference for the English translation of Chinese medical books.

Abstract: I argue that contemporary critical translation theories shed light on both Geoffrey chaucer's translational environment and a cluster of five translational actions: communication, transformation, transportation, hermeneutics, and liminality. Each translational cluster has its desired goals, and each leaves its traces. They infiltrate chaucer's writing practice in varying degrees, and they appear in various combinations — even in works that are not translations, do not contain translations, or do not pose as translations. I close with a case study of The Squire's Tale , a canterbury tale with no known analogues and only tangential sources. Abetted by the five translational actions, however, the tale takes the guise of a translation, one that stretches beyond the British Isles into the outer limits of the world as known and imagined in late-medieval England.

Abstract (sommario):
Translation Epistemology: Implied and Expressed The starting point for determining the nature of translation epistemology, which develops in parallel to the philosophical theory of cognition, is to distinguish an internal epistemology that permeates the field of translation communication – one of the varieties of verbal textual communication. Its goals are cognitive and exploratory. Cognition refers to the essence of translational communication, exploration refers to the forms differentiating this type of communication. I define translation as the interlingual re-editing of a ready text; and in the space of textual communication it generates seven fundamental components: 1. foreign-language originals or foreign-language translations, 2. mental translations (paratexts), 3. complete translations, 4. fragmentary translations, 5. translation-like structures, 6. translational reflections, and 7. translational fantasies. In this area the epistemology of translation is equivalent to the documentalist’s epistemology. For the translator, any textual structure, subjected to interlingual re-editing, becomes a document as well as a task. In the process of translation, cognitive activity is intertwined with praxeological one, the acquisition of knowledge is combined with the improvement of the craft of translation, the concurrence of cognition and skill prevails. The whole epistemological activity of translators and translation scholars, implicit and explicit, consists in the fact that the translator repeats the hypothetical path of the original author, while the translation scholar repeats bot the hypothetical path of the translator and the hypothetical path of the original author.

Abstract (sommario):
This research focuses upon how the translation of certain types of literature in China evolved historically: from ‘non-translations’ (i.e., ‘translations’ unmade as well as made and yet strictly forbidden under given censorship conditions) to ‘partial’ or ‘full/near-full’ translations set against the backdrop of changing practices required by the country’s censorship policies. My analysis begins with an overview of the multi-faceted interface between censorship and translation, followed by the conceptualization of a typology of translations under censorship. This initial discussion, in turn, allows me to resituate specific translations, including the once absented translations of earlier times (i.e., prior to the 1949 Revolution or prior to the Cultural Revolution), which were initially taken at face value as ‘non-translations’ and yet which, later on, became ‘partial’ or ‘full/near-full’ translations under the country’s subsequently more relaxed censorial operations. I attempt to illustrate such shifts by means of in-depth discussion of the dynamic nature of translational commitment in connection with the change-resistant properties and evolving priorities of censorship. In illustrating my arguments, I will draw specific examples from case studies of three well-known censorship-affected translations – i.e., On China (Kissinger 2011), Lolita (Nabokov 1991) and The Good Earth (Buck 1960), which, I argue, epitomise the shifting degrees of translational commitment (‘non-,’ ‘partial’ and ‘full/near-full’) as they occurred in the Chinese context.

Abstract (sommario):
The study aims to find out the reader-centred & author-centred translation of Ashtadhyayi of Panini, an Indian linguist of 5th century BC, who compiled the world oldest, shortest and ever first linguistic book in Sanskrit language focusing on all linguistic aspects, aiming at protecting the sounds of Vedas; the holy book of Hinduism. The linguistic importance of Sanskrit was firstly mentioned by William Jones during his famous address in India, whereas the linguistic phenomena were discussed by Ferdinand de Saussure in nineteenth century. The book is first translated into English in 1891by Sarisa Chandra Vasu with a large number of Sanskrit Words which gained a momentous fame in all the linguistic circles. Due to which Ashtadhyayi was studied widely by English professors and students illuminating their linguistic horizons by coining unique ambiguous precise 4000 rules under the name of ‘Sutra’. Just after this English translational creation of Ashtadhyayi a large number of translations were done by the native Hindu scholars and even by western Sanskritests. Therefore, a huge number of commentaries, studies and articles were written by European and native linguists and at the same time it was translated into other languages. The book and all its translations are available online. The purpose of this paper is to collect all the English translations of Ashtadhyayi throughout the history since 5th BC to the age of globalization and digitalization, then putting them into a translational categorization according to various kinds of translations finding out the most comprehensive and faithful translations among them and the types of translation strategies applied by the translators in translating this unique cryptic linguistic book.

The present publication expands the analysis of the Old Testament translations into different languages. This line of studies was initiated by the works of the late French scholar Philippe Cassuto and one of the authors of this publication. The purpose of the article is to look at the strategies applied in translating the Old Testament names of the Supreme Being into Latin (the Vulgate version) and modern Italian. This purpose is two-fold: by doing so, we also expand the data base of the Old Testament terms‘ renditions in different languages. The article provides the full nomenclature of the names of the Supreme God in the Old-Hebrew (Masoretic) text of the Old Testament, concentrates on their semantics and grammatical structure, and explains the contexts of their use. A canonical Russian-language translation is used as a reference base to illustrate the fate of the original names of the God in translation. The widely-accepted English-language translations of the Old Testament are included to provide a broader perspective on translation strategies applied to this particular aspect of the Old Testament texts. The analyzed Latin and six modern Italian-language translations demonstrate a considerable degree of uniformity in translating the names of God. The Latin and the Italian translations apply the philological strategy to translating the Holy Bible (as opposed to another option presented by the typology of the Bible translation – the ideological strategy). Notwithstanding the relative lexical uniformity of the translations, they demonstrate the differences between Catholic and Protestant versions. The analysis of the Italian translations of the Old Testament contributes to the typology of the Bible translation and ultimately makes an input to the general theory of translation.

Abstract Regardless of the approach one uses in the study of translating and translations, it remains necessary to delimit the legitimate field of concern. I.e. translations must be identified and described sui generis as the results of a text-processing activity. From the linguistic and text-theoretical perspective this objective is fulfilled by the concept of equivalence; a translation is defined as a secondary text that stands in an equivalence relation to a primary text. The range of the equivalence-oriented approach and the possibilities it offers for systematic description and explanation of translational phenomena are, however, limited. Its problems and limitations become apparent not only in the context of historical translation research, but also whenever interest focusses upon the text-productive—i.e. ultimately creative—aspect of translation, as opposed to its reproductive aspect, i.e. the linguistic-textual relationships between languages and texts as these are deduced from regularities.

Abstract (sommario):
Using a program written in python language to conduct a big-data statistical analysis of poetic form and vocabulary use of nine Chinese translations of Emily Dickinson's poetry, it is found that the current Chinese translations deviate significantly from the original in terms of poetic form in which deviation of punctuation is greater than that of stanzas and lines, and no translation completely retains formal characteristics of the original. Different characteristics in the use of vocabulary can be found in different translations. Some translations have too many additions and deletions, which makes language content deviate from the original too much. In translating Dickinson's poetry, the form and content of the original text should be faithfully translated. In particular, dashes of the original text should be kept completely, reduce the manifestation of the translator in the translation and avoid addition and deletion in translating.

Abstract (sommario):
The differences between the Arabic and English linguistic systems and legal cultures have long been a fundamental challenge in legal translation. Examining how the dissimilarities between the Saudi and English legal cultures affect the Arabic-English legal translation has received little attention from researchers. Therefore, this critical analysis aims to examine the Arabic-English translation of 12 Saudi legal articles to identify the linguistic and cultural factors involved in the translation process. Since research that addresses the difficulties and challenges of translating the legal discourse is of undeniable significance and studies that examined the Saudi legal discourse and its translation are scarce; therefore, this study attempts to contribute to the literature by analyzing several Saudi Legal Articles and their English translations to define the challenges of translating legal terms from Arabic into English. The study adopted Šarčević’s (2000) functional equivalence framework to study the Saudi Legal Articles and their official English translations. This framework was selected because it is well suited to examine the equivalent level of the legal terms and their translations, which is the main objective of this study. This study attempts to analyze different legal terms that characterize the selected Saudi legal articles and their official English translations. The investigated legal terms include religious, culture-specific, archaic, and doublets. This study revealed that translating Arabic religious and culture-specific terms and doublets is challenging, whereas translating Arabic archaic words is much easier.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis article compares several post-1950s translations of the Liezi, and examines the concept of originality, the degrees of closeness to the original text a modern translation can achieve, and how this “faithfulness” can be understood. I first discuss how the problem of the Liezi's originality has negatively influenced critics' and translators' perception of the text's significance, then compare its different translations to show their specific translational and interpretational problems. Finally, I reflect on the overarching methodological question that frames my comparisons of translations, namely, why compare? I argue that comparing translations cannot be a means to ascertain the best translation, because both concepts of originality and faithfulness are multiple in meaning rather than singularly defined. Instead of measuring translations in terms of “fidelity,” a more insightful practice would be discovering the insights different translations offer into the relationships between the original and translated texts, source and target languages, as well as questioning the construction of texts as “original source texts” through translation by recognizing the potential fluidity and multiplicity of the source text itself.

Abstract (sommario):
Translating Indonesian reduplications into English is not an easy matter due to the difference in morphological form, syntactic function and semantic meaning of reduplications in both languages. For example, the phrase ‘jauh-jauh hari’ cannot be translated into ‘far-far day’. This translation is not acceptable since it follows exactly the form of the original text, or only focusing on the morphological form, while the other two factors are disregarded. Thus, in assessing the acceptability of the translation, those three factors should be considered. However, the acceptability of the translation can also be checked by comparing the translations with the corpus. This article analyzes the translations of 3 Indonesian reduplications by 50 university students and compares their translations with similar expressions found in COCA and BNC to find out the degree of acceptability of the translations. The results show which translations are acceptable and which are not based on the frequency of usage.

Abstract (sommario):
Chinese poetry translation is currently dominated by the rhymed translations of poetry represented by Xu Yuanchong and the unrhymed translations of poetry represented by Weng Xianliang. Both of these poetry translation methods have provided us with valuable practical experience. However, volumes 1 to 3 of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China, as authoritative interpretations of Chinese wisdom, Chinese plans, and Chinese theories, contain a large number of ancient Chinese poems. However, in the English version of the three volumes, the English translations of the relevant verses do not copy the existing translations, of famous translators, but instead, use the paraphrasing method to render these verses. By collecting representative verses on different topics and comparing the similarities and differences between translators’ translations of the same poems in the three volumes, the author summarizes the different paths of poetry translation, explores the feasibility and merits of the paraphrasing method as the main path of translating poetry in political texts, and provides a practical basis for promoting the paraphrasing method of poetry translation.

Abstract (sommario):
Most African names have sociocultural identities, which convey thoughts, traditions, fortunes, conditions, histories, and other features. Translating African indigenous names from Yoruba into French and English transcends Saussure’s postulation of signified–signifier arbitrariness (Saussure,1975). Previous studies in African onomastic translation have concentrated mostly on Europhone translation, with insufficient scholarly attention paid to the Yoruba-French onomastic translation. Therefore, this work explores Yoruba names in a literary onomastic translation with a view to bringing to fore the connotative embodiments of African names. Establishing techniques to employ in translating African names into European languages like French and English. The study adapts Newmark (1988) and Moya (2000) approaches to name translation. The content analysis was employed in the investigation and interpretation of the data that were purposively selected from two D. O. Fagunwa’s Yoruba novels – Ògbójú Ọdẹ nínú Igbó Irúnmalẹ̀ (2005) and Ìrèké-Oníbùdó (2005) –and their French translations – Le preux chasseur dans la forêt infestée de démons (1989) and La fortune sourit aux audacieux(1989) – by Olaoye Abioye respectively; as well as Louis Camara’s, an Ivorian francophone, translation of Soyinka’s translation The Forest of a Thousand Daemons (1982); originally from Fagunwa’s Ogboju into French-- La Forêt aux Mille Demons (2010). The essay concludes that African names are embedded in ethnolinguistic and sociocultural connotations and specific translational techniques are imperative to their translations into European languages such as French and English

Abstract (sommario):
There was a long tradition of translating Buddhist texts from Indic languages into classical Chinese during the first millennium CE. There have been a number of new Chinese translations of Buddhist texts from Sanskrit and Pali in recent decades. This paper provides case studies that illustrate the various ways in which these modern translations were produced in light of the historical background of traditional translations. When traditional renderings do not suit modern readers for various reasons, translators can take different approaches to adapting their new translations to the readers, such as indirect translation, shifting from source-oriented norms to target-oriented norms, and reinterpreting words from the historical-philological viewpoint. A few instances are cited from the history of Bible translations in the hope of shedding more light on some issues of Buddhist translations, considering certain parallels between the two traditions of translating sacred texts.

Abstract (sommario):
Translation serves as a bridge for telling Chinese stories and promotes the exchange of Chinese and foreign civilizations. By translating Chinese classics into foreign languages, it facilitates the international dissemination of Chinese culture and deepens the exchange and mutual learning of civilizations. As the first of China's four great classical novels, A Dream of Red Mansions is widely recognized for its literary value and achievements by scholars worldwide. From the early 19th century to the present, there have been over 100 translations into more than 30 languages. A Dream of Red Mansions represents the pinnacle of classical Chinese literature, involving complex terminology from various fields. In addition to translating ancient titles and food in the text, there are also extensive translations of ancient poems, all of which pose focal points and challenges in translation. By comparing various translations, this paper takes Hawkes' translation as an example to analyze the differences between English and Chinese in the translation of A Dream of Red Mansions from the perspectives of hypotaxis and parataxis, and expound the translation strategies in this type of translation.

Machine translation (MT) have attracted many researchers’attention in various ways. Although the advanced of technology brings development to the result of MT, the quality are still criticized. One of the texts that has great challenges and translation problems is humorous text. Humorous texts that trigger a smile or laugh should have the same effect in another language. Humor uses linguistic, cultural, and universal aspects to create joke or humor. These raise questions how do machines translate humorous texts from English into Indonesian? This article aimed at comparing the translation result and error made by three prominent Machine Translations (Google Translate, Yandex Translate, and Bing Microsoft Translator) in translating humorous texts. This research applied qualitative descriptive method. The data were taken by comparing the translation results produced by 3 online Machine Translations in translating four humorous texts. The findings show that Google Translate produced better translation result. There are some errors related to lexical, syntaxis, semantics, and pragmatics errors in the. The implication of this finding shows that machine translation still need human in post editing to produce similar effect to preserve the humor.

Abstract (sommario):
Translating the Noble Qur’an into other languages requires a lot of effort by translators, and one major semantic phenomenon that requires even greater effort to translate is polysemy, due to the multiple meanings involved. Different translators render Qur’anic polysemy differently in an attempt to capture the specific meaning of the polysemous term. A few researches on translating Qur’anic polysemy have been conducted on selected polysemous words about some well-known translations like those of Yusuf Ali, Muhsin Khan & Hilali, J. Arberry, and Emily Assami, Marry Kennedy & Amatullah Bantley etc. This study focuses on the translation of a Qur’anic polysemy of the word “rijs” in four translations of the 21st century. The aim is to examine the selected translations and compare them to determine how each of them succeeds in capturing the specific meaning of the source text, or to what extent each translation attempts to avoid meaning loss in translating the investigated. The comparison is based on the interpretations of three famous commentators; Al-Qurtubi (2006), Ibn Kathir (1997) and At-Tabari (2001). The study applies the Qualitative Comparative Analysis approach in analyzing the four translations. The findings of the study reveal that translating Qur’anic polysemy is a difficult task and that all the selected translators are aware of that fact. It also reveals that in some instances, the translations succeed in conforming to the target meaning of either of the selected interpretations and that in most cases where specific meaning is not determined, the translations resort to the primary meaning of the lexeme under study.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract English Bible translations are often classified along two axes: (1) whether their translation approach pursues “formal correspondence” (prioritizing literalness) or “functional equivalence” (prioritizing meaning); and (2) whether their translation approach emphasizes “gender-traditionalism” (translating gendered language literally) or “gender-inclusivism” (minimizing unnecessarily gendered language). Leveraging insights from research on how religious subcultural capital shapes consumption patterns, we examine how indicators of conservative Protestant subcultural attachment potentially shape Christians’ choices of Bible translation along these axes. Compared with Catholics and “other Christians,” Conservative Protestants are more likely to read functional equivalence translations. Biblical literalists are more likely to read gender-traditionalist translations, but curiously no more likely than others to read formal correspondence translations. The link between conservative Protestant affiliation and reading a gender-traditionalist or inclusive Bible is heavily influenced by how we classify the New International Version. Importantly, we also find Bible reading and overall religiosity are positively associated with reading functional equivalence and gender-inclusive Bibles. Thus while conservative Bible beliefs seem to incline Christians toward translations that reflect conservative subcultural priorities (gender-traditionalism), consistent Bible practice is more prevalent among Christians who read more dynamic and inclusive translations.

Abstract (sommario):
The study is based on the translators’ respective cultural identities, and compares, evaluates and validates the translation strategies of the three translations in terms of dealing with reduplications and image words in the translations. This study proves that Lin Yutang believes that the most important thing in translating poetry is considering the context, and finally translate the beauty of poetry through the techniques of “using words to convey the spirit” and “using words to condense the poetry”. Xu Yuanchong insists on his own translation ideas: the “Three Beauties Theory”, which contains beauty in sound, beauty in form and beauty in sense. As a result, Xu’s translations have a high degree of unity of “loose in form but not in spirit”, and his translation versions are even more remarkable in terms of “conveying the spirit” of the image in the text. Yang Xianyi & Gladys Yang attach great importance to “fidelity” in translation, giving priority to the strategy of “foreignization” in all matters relating to national cultural characteristics, and translating poetry by means of literal translation, transliteration and paraphrase.

In a recent study of Shakespeare translation in Japan, the translator and editor Ōba Kenji (14) expresses his preference for the early against the later translations of Tsubouchi Shōyō (1859-1935), a small group of basically experimental translations for stage performance published between the years 1906 and 1913; after 1913, Shōyō set about translating the rest of the plays, which he completed in 1927. Given Shōyō’s position as the pioneer of Shakespeare translation, not to mention a dominant figure in the history of modern Japanese literature, Ōba’s professional view offers insights into Shōyō’s development that invite detailed analysis and comparison with his rhetorical theories. This article attempts to identify what Shōyō may have meant by translating Shakespeare into elegant or “beautiful” Japanese with reference to excerpts from two of his translations from the 1900s.

Abstract (sommario):
The Malay stories of Pelanduk yang Bijak, Peniup Seruling and Seuncang Padi were translated to English, and analysed to identify the translation problems. The procedures were also investigated to find solutions for the problems using translation procedures as the framework for data analysis. After the translation of the stories, the source and target texts were analysed to identify problems and procedures. The findings of the study indicated two types of problems in the Malay-English translations of the stories; structural or semantic problems, and problems arising from cultural differences. Among various translation procedures used in the translations, literal translation was the most common procedure in the translation of the Malay stories. The findings from translations and the analyses in this study could be utilised in translator and interpreter training classrooms. Finding solutions to the translation problems could improve translators’ ability to better theorise while translating, and thus produce “good” translations, particularly in the translation of literary works from Malay to English. This study could have pedagogical significance, as the Malay short stories contain moral lessons by which Malay culture could be further introduced and “exported” to the English-speaking audience through literature.

Abstract (sommario):
This article examines the development of the translation manner of Fyodor Sologub. The study of the poet’s archive makes it possible to highlight a number of preparatory materials for Sologub’s translations from Paul Verlaine, in particular, interlinear translations. Sologub’s experiments with interlinear translations, which in his case represent a hybrid genre (interlinear translations that include a large number of different dictionary variants of words) are of great importance for the theory, history, and practice of literary translation. Using specific examples, the essay demonstrates that Sologub worked not just with the original text, traditional interlinear translation, and written out words. He employed his “expanded” interlinear translation where he could freely navigate, choose and rearrange words, try their “sound” while seeking to keep their meaning. The authors argue that Sologub’s translating method consisted in selecting Russian words on the basis of the interlinear translation that not only conveyed the original but also made it possible to create a new lexical, grammatical, metric, phonetic, and emotional unity close to the translator’s worldview mindset and aesthetic views.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper analyses and compares the three currently available Lithuanian translations of George Orwell’s novel Animal Farm (1945) by Arvydas Sabonis (1991), Edita Mažonienė (2021) and Jovita Liutkutė (2022) with special attention given to the frequently overlooked translation of speech tags. It aims to reveal the peculiarities as well as assess the quality of the translations of the collected speech tags. This is achieved by applying quantitative and qualitative analysis methods, i.e. by systematising the relevant elements of the text and analysing them according to the chosen classification of translation shifts as well as comparing the collected data of each individual translation. One of the most notable aspects of the translations, as observed during the analysis, is a significant variety in the translations of pronouns and verbs, occurring due to the application of the translation shifts of specification and implicitation, which function on a semantic level. These aspects reflect the linguistic preferences of translators when translating into synthetic languages and highlight the richness of the Lithuanian language. Abstract (sommario):
This article examines how the time of translation can influence the translation strategy the translator chooses when translating modern and historical realia. The material for the research was six Russian translations of Mark Twain’s novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The author chose three realia (moccasins, Pain-killer, clerk), which fit the definition of modern and historical realia provided at the beginning of the article. With the help of the dictionaries published at the same time as the various translations, the author analyzed the strategies the translators used when translating those realia. The research results are of practical importance for translators tackling the problem of translating modern and historical realia.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper discusses different approaches to the translation of Qur’anic metaphor, as one of the semantic problematic areas in translating the Qur’an, with a view to recommending principled criteria for translating Qur’anic metaphor. An attempt has been made to analyze, compare and assess six different approaches to the translation of Qur’anic metaphor and a blueprint is provided. The six selected translations are those by Sale (first published in1734), Ali (first published in 1937), Arberry (first published in 1955), Dawood (first published in 1956), Khatib (first published in 1986) and Khān–Hilālī (1996 edition). These translatons represent different orientations in translating the Muslim’s holy Book. Moreover, their translations are regularly reprinted.
