Scott, Clive. "Rhythm in translation, with two accounts of Leconte de Lisle’s ‘Midi’". Journal of European Studies 50, n. 1 (26 febbraio 2020): 91–105. http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/0047244119892858.

Abstract (sommario):
This article explores the translation of poetic rhythm: not the rhythm of the source text, but the rhythm of the translational act itself. This re-conception of translation’s rhythmic task is enabled by a translation designed for the polyglot, rather than for the monoglot, reader. In this new understanding of translational process, rhythm not only embodies the perceptual and cognitive experience of the translating subject, it also makes more intimate the relationship between language and voice, the linguistic and the paralinguistic. Furthermore, it has as much to do with the space of translation, its distribution on the page, as with its changing temporal modes. The translator, then, does not translate the rhythm of a text so much as a text’s capacity for rhythm, and that capacity includes both espousing the perspective of a translating ‘I’ and releasing what is not linguistically manifest in the source text. These propositions are tested in two translations of Leconte de Lisle’s ‘Midi’.

Abstract (sommario):
Philosophical translation between "linguistic violence" and translative hermeneutics. Translational considerations from the perspective of the translation(s) of Jean-Paul Sartre's L'être et le néant The establishment of translatology as a scientific discipline is a late phenomenon to which not only linguistics but also the philosophy of language has contributed significantly. Although the considerations of Schleiermacher, Ricoeur, Derrida, Balibar, Cassin and other philosophers are very stimulating for the examination of the translation problematics, they do not offer a particular translation theory of philosophical texts. Most of their works are of little help in practice when it comes to translating a complicated philosophical text. That is why I will take in this paper the opposite path and start from my own experience as a translator of philosophical literature into Bulgarian and, more concretely, from my translation of Jean-Paul Sartre's L'être et le néant. On the base of this key work of contemporary philosophy and its translations into different languages, I will address the difficulties and the specifics of philosophical translation, discuss various translation methods, and argue several theses, which could serve as impulses for a further development of translation theory and translation practice in the field of philosophy.

Abstract (sommario):
Secondary translations of Turkish literary works represent a unique translational chal- lenge, considering that the original text is written in a language that differs significantly in structure from the Indo-European languages, from which these translations are mostly made. By contrasting the Turkish onomastic words with their transcription into Serbian, the prob- lems of the translation appear when translating from a translation. Although in the transla- tion of Turkish works from English and German, the language of the mediator, a considerable number of correctly chosen solutions can be found in the transcription of anthroponyms and toponyms, the analysis carried out shows that the occurring errors are most often due to the nature of the language of the mediator or due to the negligence of the translator. This situation supports translators’ opinion that translating from a translation should be used only when direct translation is not possible.

Abstract (sommario):
Translation Epistemology: Implied and Expressed The starting point for determining the nature of translation epistemology, which develops in parallel to the philosophical theory of cognition, is to distinguish an internal epistemology that permeates the field of translation communication – one of the varieties of verbal textual communication. Its goals are cognitive and exploratory. Cognition refers to the essence of translational communication, exploration refers to the forms differentiating this type of communication. I define translation as the interlingual re-editing of a ready text; and in the space of textual communication it generates seven fundamental components: 1. foreign-language originals or foreign-language translations, 2. mental translations (paratexts), 3. complete translations, 4. fragmentary translations, 5. translation-like structures, 6. translational reflections, and 7. translational fantasies. In this area the epistemology of translation is equivalent to the documentalist’s epistemology. For the translator, any textual structure, subjected to interlingual re-editing, becomes a document as well as a task. In the process of translation, cognitive activity is intertwined with praxeological one, the acquisition of knowledge is combined with the improvement of the craft of translation, the concurrence of cognition and skill prevails. The whole epistemological activity of translators and translation scholars, implicit and explicit, consists in the fact that the translator repeats the hypothetical path of the original author, while the translation scholar repeats bot the hypothetical path of the translator and the hypothetical path of the original author.

Abstract (sommario):
The study focuses on problems encountered by translation students when translating English compound-complex sentences into Arabic. It explores their structure, their components, and the appropriate way of translating them with the preservation of the same structure and meaning into the TL. The study hypothesizes: 1) compound-complex sentences can be found in English and Arabic. 2) Such structures are problematic for students when translating them into Arabic. 3) Vinay& Darbelnet’s translational model is applicable in translating compound - complex sentences. The study presents a comprehensive theoretical explanation on compound-complex sentences in both English and Arabic. Then, (3) English compound-complex sentences have been selected from different English grammar books and handed over to (20) undergraduate 4th stage students at the Department of Translation_ College of Arts_ University of Mosul, to handle the task of translating these sentences into Arabic. Their translations were analyzed syntactically and semantically by adopting Vinay& Darbelnet’s translational model(1958/1995) as well as Catford’s classification of translation-shifts (1965); in order to detect the difficulties and problems encountered in translating the sentences; thus, it’s a qualitative study. The study concludes that:1) compound-complex sentences are found in English and Arabic, 2) such sentences are problematic for students when translating them into Arabic either by the difficulty of identifying their parts, making unnecessary shifts, or adopting inappropriate strategy during the translational process that affect their translation accuracy, syntactically and semantically. 3) Vinay& Darbelent’s translational model is applicable to translating compound-complex sentences by adopting literal translation procedure within direct translation strategy. Based on that, the study is classified as a descriptive one.

Abstract (sommario):
This study explores the performance of machine translation of literary texts from English to Chinese. The study compares two machine translation systems, Bing Translator and Youdao Machine Translation, using selected texts from the novel “Nineteen eighty-four” by George Orwell. The data collection includes the original source texts, their machine-generated translations by Bing Translator and Youdao Machine Translation, and comparisons with human reference translations to assess the performance of these systems. The research’s focal point is to evaluate the accuracy, fluency, and appropriateness of translations generated by these two machine translation systems, while also analyzing the post-editing effort required to enhance the quality of the final machine-translated product. The study revealed that despite the presence of flaws in both machine translation systems, Youdao Machine Translation demonstrated superior performance, especially in accurately translating technical terms and idiomatic expressions, making it the more effective option overall. Nevertheless, the translations from Youdao Machine Translation required more substantial post-editing efforts to improve fluency and readability. Conversely, Bing Translator yielded more fluent and natural-sounding translations, albeit with a need for improved accuracy in translating technical terms and idiomatic expressions. The study concludes that while machine translation systems are capable of generating reasonable translations for literary texts, human post-editing remains essential to ensure the final output’s accuracy, fluency, and appropriateness. The study underscores the importance of selecting the appropriate machine translation system based on the nature of the text being translated. It also highlights the critical role of post-editing in refining the quality of machine-translated outputs, suggesting that while machine translation can provide a solid foundation, human intervention is indispensable for achieving optimal accuracy, fluency, and overall readability in literary translations.

Abstract (sommario):
This article studies linguistic landscape (LL) from a translational perspective. It aims to examine the translation strategies adopted in translating texts on non-official public signs and assess the quality of their translations. For accomplishing this, the author analysed a corpus of one hundred photos of public signage representing bilingual (translational) content based on two criteria. Namely, the translation strategies employed in translating public signs and the appropriateness of public signage translations for their target readers. The study concludes that several translation strategies are used to convey the informative content of public signs, such as transference, word-for-word translation, generalisation, and omission. Furthermore, the study reveals cases of inaccurate translations that can be attributed to the translator’s linguistic incompetence, improper use of translation strategies, and linguistic incompatibilities between English and Arabic. Such mistranslations distort the informative content of the original text and give rise to different interpretations. The study’s implication is to draw attention to the importance of translational content of public signs as it serves as a medium of communication and reflects the image of linguistic cityscape.

Abstract (sommario):
The present study attempted to investigate Schjoldager's (2008) taxonomy of translation microstrategies applied by the translator for translating "Donald Trump’s Executive Orders." This led to determine the most/least microstrategies and translation macrostrategy employed by the translator as well as his success in producing the TT and in fulfilling the skopos of the translation. To achieve this, 20 English versions of "Donald Trump’s Executive Orders" were chosen as the sample of analysis and compared with their Persian translations. As the results indicated, among Schjoldager's translation microstrategies, the translator employed all 12 strategies. This includes direct transfer, calque, direct translation, oblique translation, explicitation, paraphrase, adaptation, addition, condensation, substitution, deletion, and permutation of which explicitation and direct transfer were the most/least used microstrategies. Based on the findings, TT-oriented strategies have been used more than ST-oriented ones. Thus, under the skopos theoretical approach, the translator was successful in translating "Donald Trump’s Executive Orders" and in fulfilling the skopos of the translation. This was because of that translations made by him were easy to understand to all types of TT readers. This study offers some helpful pedagogical implications to translation students and trainees, teachers, and those responsible for teaching students and training translators.

Abstract (sommario):
Qur'an Karim dan Terjemah Artinya published by Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) Yogyakarta is one of the al-Qur'an translations in Indonesia. The work has characteristics that distinguish it from other translations. The translation tried to bring the meaning of Quranic verses ignoring literal meaning and looking for its equivalent in Bahasa Indonesia. This research is focusing on the verses of the creation of man with a question about the form and style of the translation of these verses. This study uses the theoretical framework of ḥarfiyyah and tafsīriyyah translation, as well as the theory of interpretation patterns in 'Ulūm al-Qur'ān. This study found that the translator uses two translation methods, the ḥarfīyyah, and tafsīriyyah translation methods. Sometimes a verse was translated with a shorter or longer Bahasa Indonesia sentence to clarify the meaning of the verse. The translation of the Qur'an is also considered as an interpretation in a limited version so that the translator has a style in translating the verse. The translation style used is the adabī-ijtimā'ī style with a language approach because the translator uses straightforward language in translating the verse.

Abstract (sommario):
This research aims at mapping out the translation techniques applied in translating sarcasm expressions and describing the impact of translation techniques toward the translation quality in terms of the accuracy aspect. This descriptive qualitative research used documents (i.e. subtitle of television series The Big Bang Theory and its translation in bahasa Indonesia) and informant (i.e. raters) as the data sources. To collect the data, the methods that were applied are document analysis and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). As a result, there are 15 translation techniques applied by the translator in translating the sarcasm expressions. The application of appropriate translation techniques extremely affects the translation quality. The translator tends to apply established equivalent in dealing with sarcasm expressions. Consequently, the sarcasm expression translations tend to be rendered accurately. Meanwhile, reduction, discursive creation, literal techniques tend to produce less accurate and inaccurate translation.

In this article, translation is approached as a reflection of translational, translatorial, and translation-theoretical myths in their different manifestations with varying truth value. Drawing on insights from the philosophy of science and semiotics, the mythical aspect of translating and translations is first discussed with respect to the role of myths in science and research and to the nature of translation-theoretical knowledge. The author then focuses on the following questions: is translating a case of action that conveys the general or the particular; is “myth” a type of speech even in Translation Studies and a building block in the cosmology of translation; what is the status of dichotomies in translating and translation strategies, in translation studies, and in the work of translation theorists; and finally, what makes a translation-theoretical myth a living myth.

Abstract (sommario):
This article examines how the time of translation can influence the translation strategy the translator chooses when translating modern and historical realia. The material for the research was six Russian translations of Mark Twain’s novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The author chose three realia (moccasins, Pain-killer, clerk), which fit the definition of modern and historical realia provided at the beginning of the article. With the help of the dictionaries published at the same time as the various translations, the author analyzed the strategies the translators used when translating those realia. The research results are of practical importance for translators tackling the problem of translating modern and historical realia.

Abstract (sommario):
The present study aims at exploring the translation strategies used in translating culturally loaded expressions in two translations of Julian Barnes’ The Sense of an Ending. In particular, the study seeks to ascertain the extent to which cultural content is retained by the translators or domesticated to cater the target language audience. To attain this objective, translation units are purposively selected and compared across the two translations. Analysis has revealed that Masaud’s translation is ST-oriented and characterized by an overreliance on literal translation. The translator either avoids translating cultural content, specifically religious references and taboo expressions, or offers a translation that respects the ST more than the TL audience, resulting in a translation that sends the reader abroad (Venuti 1995). In comparison, Faisal’s translation is TT-oriented and brings the author back home. It domesticates the foreign text to target-language cultural values. The study concludes that Faisal’s translation is more fluent and natural because it minimizes the foreignness of the source-text, while Masaud’s translation, which champions accuracy at the expense of acceptability, doubles the cognitive demands on the reader by offering translations that fail to fit in comfortably with the established cultural reference framework.

Abstract (sommario):
The article will focus on our personal experience in Russian translation of the reference book by French semioticians Algirdas Julien Greimas and Jacques Fontanille on the semiotics of passions. In particular, possible translative variations of terms relating to passions such as ‘umbrage’ with no exact analogue in Russian have been discussed with one of the authors, Jacques Fontanille. According to Umberto Eco, for a theory of translation, not only may it be necessary to examine many examples of translation, but also to have had at least one of the following three experiences: in checking translations by others, in translating, and in being translated - or better still, in being translated in collaboration with one’s translator. We will also present Yuri Lotman’s semiosphere, being especially interested in the French translation of concepts such as ‘unpredictability.’ The experience of written scientific translation, on the one hand, and experience in the international cultural sphere, on the other hand, will allow us to put forward some hypotheses about the importance of intersemiotic translation.

Abstract (sommario):
In this article I argue that translated texts and translational paratexts invite readers to read translated texts as if they were the originals, a hitherto widely ignored premise of translations. Although translations are produced by many agents in collaboration (authors, publishers, copy-editors and translators), they are generally presented as texts produced predominantly by one agent, the author. I therefore claim that there is a ‘translation pact’ at work in translated literature, a rhetorical construction through which readers are invited to read translated texts as if they were the originals. A narratological implication of the pact is that individual readers who accept the pact will reconstruct only an ‘implied author’ and not an ‘implied translator’. This view differs from earlier works on the implied translator (e.g. Munday, 2008: 11; O’Sullivan, 2003; Schiavi, 1996). The translation pact is most often constructed implicitly, but sometimes translators draw attention to themselves and manifest their agency, for example by discussing translational decisions in prefaces and notes. Against what one would assume from previous claims on the translator’s ‘visibility’ (Venuti, 1995), I demonstrate that the translator’s presence does not necessarily work against the pact but can rather strengthen it. The translation pact explains why readers, including critics, literary scholars and other professional readers, often talk and write about translations as if they were originals composed solely by the author.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper points on the use of design thinking in fundamental translation class. Design thinking is an approach to produce the best solution of a problem. This approach includes five steps, namely empathize, define (the problem), ideate, prototype, and test. The researchers focus on the translation’s acceptability of idioms since this topic is usually problematic to students. Therefore, a case study was conducted in this research. The participants of this research were 20 students of fundamental translation class in English Literature Study Program, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman. The students translated some idioms using design thinking and their translations were randomly selected. Observation was conducted to examine the students’ behaviours in translating idioms. After that, the researchers rated their translations’ acceptability. The results indicate that design thinking’s application in translating idioms produce acceptable translations. Furthermore, this study can be beneficial for translators and translation teachers to gain acceptability in translation.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Translatology adopts psychological and cognitive approaches to study the complex processes underlying translational phenomena. As such, it deals with both translations and the translators who produce them. The present study uses think-aloud protocols and keystroke logging to explore the impact of affective factors such as self-efficacy beliefs on the selection and application of translation problem-solving strategies by a group of trainee translators completing a translation task. Four translation trainees completed a Translation Self-efficacy Questionnaire. Participants with both high and low self-efficacy rankings were asked to translate a text using the Translog keylogger while simultaneously verbalizing their mental processes. Analysis of the verbal protocols indicated considerable differences within the group regarding the cognitive and metacognitive strategies that they chose to employ. The results suggested that low self-efficacy leads subjects to spend too much time translating, due to repeated attempts at production and extensive revision. Implications of the findings for translator training are discussed.

The aim of the present article is to provide an overview of the main difficulties encountered by legal translators, and work out some practical solutions so that the translator could provide an adequate translation in compliance with the norms of the target legal system. Legal translations raise very complex theoretical and practical problems and, therefore, an interdisciplinary comparative approach to the two legal systems and languages should be manifested by specialized translators. This study demonstrates that despite the common assumption that legal translations are literal, they may be translated differently depending on the context and aim of its translation. When translating a legal document, one is thus faced with the challenge of providing a translation that makes a legal as well as linguistic sense. Consequently, a translator can provide an accurate translation only if he/she has an understanding of the SL and the TL legal systems.

The article addresses the issue of the translation of fiction in different periods of time under the influence of various linguistic, social and cultural norms, and it aims to establish differences in the use of translation strategies employed by the translator. The paper reviews the descriptive approach in Translation Studies which argues that translation is a communicative as well as social act where the translator alone is not responsible for his/her translational behaviour; other people and institutions also contribute to the formation of common notions of translational behaviour, and these are termed norms, conventions or rules. Moreover, the research emphasizes that norms are not a stable phenomenon and may vary across different periods of time and across different cultures or communities. The research is based on the contrastive analysis of two translations of Jack London’s Martin Eden with the aim to establish differences in the use of translation strategies under the influence of translation norms.

Abstract (sommario):
Knowing translation strategies allows the translator to select the best word choices when translating a text, which is especially important in entertainment media. The purpose of this research is to examine the translator's translation strategies used in translating the comic The Adventure of Tintin: Land of Black Gold into the comic Petualangan Tintin di Negeri Emas Hitam. Baker's (2018) eight translation strategies are used as the main theory of analysis in the study. The qualitative approach is used in this study's methodology. The writer examines each utterance and bubble in the book, excluding publisher information and mistakes or incorrect translations. According to the findings of this study, the translator only employs six of Baker's (2018) strategies. The loan word or loan word plus explanation, as well as translation by illustration, are not used in the translation. According to the findings of the study, translation by cultural substitution is the most used method to translate words that are unfamiliar to Indonesian readers. Following translation by omission, the translator omitted some sentences and words that were not necessary to translate into Indonesian to meet the main ideas of the sentence.

Abstract (sommario):
The field of translation studies distinguishes two main directions: firstly, the relationship between the translated and the original text, emphasising the preservation of meaning, linguistic equivalence and the strategies used in translation, and secondly the style of the translator, that has recently received attention in this field. This paper attempts to combine both of these approaches while analysing the translation of Johann W. Goethe's poetry into Albanian applied on three different translations of Goethe's ballad Erlkönig. A linguistic and textual analysis of these translations, has been also carried out. The main focus is on the analysis of the reciprocal relationship between the translator's style and the translated text. Furthermore, while comparing the translations, this paper explores the practice of poets translating poets and addresses the question of whether the fact that the translator being a poet influences the style of the translated text? Does the translator's poetic style influence the making of a good translation, and does the style of the translated poet (Goethe) have an influence on the poetic style of the translating poet? Abstract (sommario):
This paper discusses different approaches to the translation of Qur’anic metaphor, as one of the semantic problematic areas in translating the Qur’an, with a view to recommending principled criteria for translating Qur’anic metaphor. An attempt has been made to analyze, compare and assess six different approaches to the translation of Qur’anic metaphor and a blueprint is provided. The six selected translations are those by Sale (first published in1734), Ali (first published in 1937), Arberry (first published in 1955), Dawood (first published in 1956), Khatib (first published in 1986) and Khān–Hilālī (1996 edition). These translatons represent different orientations in translating the Muslim’s holy Book. Moreover, their translations are regularly reprinted.

Abstract (sommario):
In some cases the meaning-based approach used in the translation of the Good News Bible appears to support translational choices that strengthen or even introduce anti-Judaism in translation. There are instances where such translational choices are not required by the source text. It is possible, in the examples selected for discussion, to arrive at translations that follow the source text closely, are less anti-Jewish, and conform to the principles of a meaning-based approach. In principle, almost every translator of texts from the New Testament faces translational choices possibly introducing a note of anti-Judaism in translation. However, the meaning-based approach might disambiguate ambiguous passages in a way that introduces a stronger note of anti-Judaism (if compared to more formally equivalent translations), as one of the examples indicates.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper explores the manifestation of translator subjectivity in translating the Analects from the perspective of hermeneutics. Modern hermeneutics suggests that translators and readers are influenced by time, space, and cultural backgrounds, calling for the demonstration of subjectivity in the translation process. Steiner's hermeneutic translation theory introduces the four steps of "trust," "aggression," "incorporation," and "compensation," emphasizing the active role of translators in translation. Through a comparative analysis of the English translations of the Analects by James Legge and Gu Hongming, this paper discusses the translator subjectivity within these four steps.

Abstract (sommario):
The Malay stories of Pelanduk yang Bijak, Peniup Seruling and Seuncang Padi were translated to English, and analysed to identify the translation problems. The procedures were also investigated to find solutions for the problems using translation procedures as the framework for data analysis. After the translation of the stories, the source and target texts were analysed to identify problems and procedures. The findings of the study indicated two types of problems in the Malay-English translations of the stories; structural or semantic problems, and problems arising from cultural differences. Among various translation procedures used in the translations, literal translation was the most common procedure in the translation of the Malay stories. The findings from translations and the analyses in this study could be utilised in translator and interpreter training classrooms. Finding solutions to the translation problems could improve translators’ ability to better theorise while translating, and thus produce “good” translations, particularly in the translation of literary works from Malay to English. This study could have pedagogical significance, as the Malay short stories contain moral lessons by which Malay culture could be further introduced and “exported” to the English-speaking audience through literature.

Machine translation (MT) have attracted many researchers’attention in various ways. Although the advanced of technology brings development to the result of MT, the quality are still criticized. One of the texts that has great challenges and translation problems is humorous text. Humorous texts that trigger a smile or laugh should have the same effect in another language. Humor uses linguistic, cultural, and universal aspects to create joke or humor. These raise questions how do machines translate humorous texts from English into Indonesian? This article aimed at comparing the translation result and error made by three prominent Machine Translations (Google Translate, Yandex Translate, and Bing Microsoft Translator) in translating humorous texts. This research applied qualitative descriptive method. The data were taken by comparing the translation results produced by 3 online Machine Translations in translating four humorous texts. The findings show that Google Translate produced better translation result. There are some errors related to lexical, syntaxis, semantics, and pragmatics errors in the. The implication of this finding shows that machine translation still need human in post editing to produce similar effect to preserve the humor.

Abstract (sommario):
Children’s literature occupies a peripheral position in literature system according to the polysystem theory so that the translators of children’s literature can manipulate the texts with great liberty. The translator of children’s literature in the ternary relation of translation, namely the source texts, the translator and the target text, is in a relatively important position. Thus, it is a feasible way to analyze the translation of children’s literature from the translator-centered perspective. Eco-translatology is a translator-centered translation theory, aiming to analyze how the translator selects and adapts during the translation process in the translational eco-environment. In this paper, the author will adopt Eco-translatology as the translation framework to analyze the translation of children’s literature, and try to explore how ‘children’, an important factor in the translational eco-environment, influences the translator’s selection and adaptation in the process of translating children’s literature. Furthermore, the author will take Peter Pan as a case study, comparing two Chinese versions of this book to analyze how the two translators adapt and select differently from those three dimensions during the translation process, as one follows the target-reader-oriented strategy and the other one follows the source-text-oriented strategy.

This semi-autobiographical article reflects on the discipline known as Translation Studies from the point of view of the author, who was a full-time Canadian government translator from 1974 to 2014, but also taught and wrote about translation. The narrative begins with the emergence of Translation Studies in Canada and in Europe and continues through the present neoliberal era, with reflection on a variety of topics including the English name of the discipline, the lack of definition of an object of study, the original role of the journal Meta, and the notion of translation as applied linguistics. The last section considers two fictive scenarios in which Translation Studies does not emerge, and translation is studied, right from the start, in ways much more closely linked to the translation profession, with a focus on translators rather than translations, and therefore on translational production rather than the analysis of completed translations.

Abstract (sommario):
This research explores the efficacy of two prominent machine translation platforms, DeepL and ChatGPT, in translating academic idioms from English to Indonesian. Academic idioms, situated between discipline-specific jargon and universally understood expressions, pose a challenge for existing translation systems, particularly those rooted in Neural Machine Translation (NMT). The study employs a qualitative descriptive methodology, focusing on translation precision and naturalness, with bilingual experts evaluating translations through a questionnaire, focusing on translation precision and naturalness. The comprehensive analysis involved 50 participants who assessed translations on a scale of accuracy and fluency using Fiederer and O'Brian's (2009) rating scale. The results indicate that both platforms exhibit strengths and weaknesses in terms of accuracy and fluency. While DeepL demonstrates trust in its translation proficiency, ChatGPT receives a more favorable response, especially regarding fluency. Participants preferred ChatGPT for fluency in handling academic expressions, indicating its adaptability. The study also revealed a general agreement among participants regarding the difficulties both platforms encounter in accurately translating academic idioms, emphasizing continuous requirements for improved machine translation. These insights enhance understanding of machine translation's strengths and limitations in academic setting, with implications for future technology development.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper aimed at exploring the current phenomenon regarding human translation with machine translation. Human translation (HT), by definition, is when a human translator—rather than a machine—translate text. It's the oldest form of translation, relying on pure human intelligence to convert one way of saying things to another. The person who performs language translation. Learn more about using technology to reduce healthcare disparity. A person who performs language translation. The translation is necessary for the spread of information, knowledge, and ideas. It is absolutely necessary for effective and empathetic communication between different cultures. Translation, therefore, is critical for social harmony and peace. Only a human translation can tell the difference because the machine translator will just do the direct word to word translation. This is a hindrance to machines because they are not advanced to the level of rendering these nuances accurately, but they can only do word to word translations. There are different translation techniques, diverse theories about translation and eight different translation services types, including technical translation, judicial translation and certified translation. The translation is the process of translating the sequence of a messenger RNA (mRNA) molecule to a sequence of amino acids during protein synthesis. The genetic code describes the relationship between the sequence of base pairs in a gene and the corresponding amino acid sequence that it encodes.

This study aimed at determining the methods used in translating song lyrics on Harry's house album on Indolirik YouTube channel. The theory used in analyzing the data is Newmark theory (1988) which explained that there were two approaches in translating text namely SL Emphasis (Domestication) in which the emphasis was on the source language and the other one was TL Emphasis (Foreignization) in which the emphasis was on the target language. Newmark (1988) also explained there were eight methods of translations, namely, word for word, literal, faithful, semantic, adaptation, free, idiomatic, and communicative translation. The researcher conducted a descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data. The data were taken from the translation of song lyrics on Harry's house album on Indolirik YouTube channel, which consisted of 5 songs and 111 song lyrics. The findings of this research showed that there were 6 types of translation methods used by Indolirik YouTube channel in translating the lyrics. From the analyzed data, Indolirik YouTube channelused Literal translation (43,25%), Word-for-Word translation (5,41%), Free translation (10,81%), Idiomatic Translation (17,11%), and Communicative translation (23,42%). It was also found that the translator mostly used the literal translation process, it means that the translation products focused on the source language in translating the song lyrics rather than the target one.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The present paper deals with culture-specific items as a translational problem. It is based on two Polish translations of four Swedish books from the famous detective series by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö. The aim of the study is to analyze some of the practices employed by two Polish translators against the translation methods proposed by Newmark (1988), Svane (2002) and Ingo (2009). For this purpose a number of highly specific cultural items have been collected and the methods applied by translators have been identified. The analysis has shown a big difference between translators in dealing with culture-specific items. The first translator, Maria Olszańska, adopts such translation methods as calque translation, hyperonym, functional equivalent, paraphrase and omission. The other translator, Halina Thylwe, prefers transference and calque translation combined with additional explanations, either in the main part of the text or in footnotes. The methods employed by both translators are a result of choosing between global translation strategies domestication and foreignization (Venuti 1995). Domestication, adopted in the older translations, minimizes the strangeness of the Swedish text to the Polish readers, whereas foreignization in the newer translations retains the foreignness of the original.

Abstract The famous German thinker Johann Gottfried Herder (1744–1803) has insightful thought of translation. According to Herder’s exposition of the historicity of human language, the German language is in the adult phase. It can be enriched by translating from more sensuous languages. In order to achieve the enrichment, Herder advocates an accommodating translation approach with tone-fidelity. The translator must catch the tone of the original and be able to enable the tone-fidelity when translating. Herder’s folk song collections are regarded as one of his great translations. An important part of them is the translation practices of Shakespeare’s plays. Through the translation with faithfulness to the tone, Herder tries to enrich the German language and literature, which is why he is regarded as a brilliant innovator and initiator of literary translation.

Abstract (sommario):
As exchanges between nations become increasingly frequent, the importance of external promotion becomes apparent. In order to conduct effective external promotion, the role of translation is crucial. In this study, we focused on analyzing the translation of Xi Jinping's statements, speeches, lectures, directives, and letters, collected in “Xi Jinping:The Governance of China” a work that compiles his discourses. The research aimed to examine how these texts were translated into Korean, resulting in the following conclusions. First, the discourses in “Xi Jinping:The Governance of China” were categorized into three types: poetry, proverbs, and idioms. Secondly, when translating poetry, the translator mainly employed literal translation, free translation, literal translation with structural transformation, and literal translation with Chinese characters representation. When translating proverbs, the methods mainly included literal translation, literal translation with addition, and adaptation. In the case of idioms, the translator used literal translation, free translation, adaptation, Chinese Characters for Chinese Characters translation with Chinese characters representation, Chinese Characters for Chinese Characters translation with Chinese characters representation and explanation, as well as adaptation with Chinese characters representation. Thirdly, during the analysis of the translated text, it was observed that a single expression manifested in various translation patterns. This is seen as a result of the translator adhering to the principle of fidelity while simultaneously taking into account the surrounding context and the perspective of the reader. Fourthly, during the analysis of the translated text, inappropriate expressions were identified. Opinions for revisions were also provided. Through this research, it is hoped that it will contribute to the future translation projects of political texts, including “Xi Jinping:The Governance of China” and other translations related to external promotion.

Abstract (sommario):
This research paper is based on the translation of the literary text between the cultural dimension and the importance of the recipient. Since the history of translation studies has witnessed the three prominent turns, the cultural and social dimension has become the pillar of each translational activity, as the translator cannot proceed without returning to these two dimensions in order to obtain a translation that balances the basic elements of both the source text and the target text, including the linguistic and cultural elements. Through this intervention, we aim to highlight some of the concepts that are relevant to the field of our research, such as receiving translations in the target social culture and the difference between taking this element into account and ignoring it.That is why our study is divided as follows: The theoretical aspect of its concepts and everything related to it in order to avoid any form of wrong practice on the reality of the cultural and social dimension for the target recipient, especially since the translation of a literary text is one of the most difficult types of translation that requires the translator’s high skills. As for the practical aspect of the study, it relies on the comparative descriptive approach of literary texts translation reality under the sociological turn of translation studies. We will highlight the examples that we will extract from Mohamed Dib’s novel and analyze them to reach the results of this recent shift in the translation field and answer its main problem: What is the element of receiving translations in the target social culture? What are the difficulties of translating the literary text between the cultural dimension and the target recipient?

This study aimed to determine the many types of translation methods, how they were employed in the translation of the folklores "Deli Malay" and "Serdang Malay" from Indonesian to English, and why the translators used the prevailing types in these folklores. The descriptive qualitative method was used to perform this research. The data was gathered from a folklore book and an interview with the folklores' translator. Descriptive qualitative research is the method used to analyze the data. The findings of this study revealed that literal translation accounted for 39 sentences (16%), faithful translation accounted for 23 sentences (9%), semantic translation accounted for four sentences (2%), adaptation translation accounted for seven sentences (3%), free translation accounted for 158 sentences (64%) and communicative translation accounted for 16 sentences (6%). A total of 247 sentences were extracted from the data. Because he did not follow any theories or methods of translation when translating the texts, the translator utilized free translation as the dominating method. Instead, he evaluated the translations' target audience, youngsters, and made them acceptable and simple to understand.

Statutory obligation of a sworn translator to exercise special diligence obliges him to perform a diligent and faithful translation, including the names of institutions. In the process of translating names of Polish colleges, a translator may use German equivalents, which have been made available in a publicly available German database ANABIN, which contains information that make it easier for offices and schools to decide in terms of recognizing educational qualifications. However, translation and thus, choice of wording is the responsibility of the translator exclusively. He must therefore approach the suggested equivalents critically; thereby, he may not automatically accept propositions without having verified them prior. The article undertakes to establish which of the proposed equivalents of names of Polish colleges violate the rule of diligent preparation of translations and faithfulness of a sworn translation as well as the consequences of incorrect translations of university names.

Kenneth Rexroth, a well-known American poet and translator, has contributed to Du Fu poetry translation in the Western society. From the perspective of Nida’s functional equivalence theory, this research takes Rexroth’s English translations of Du Fu poems as a case to study the translation strategies adopted by Rexroth. This explores translation strategies of Du Fu poetry from the perspective of functional reciprocity theory, and is supposed to provide references for the English translation of the ancient Chinese poetry in the future. The above examples all reflect the faithfulness and accuracy of the free translation under the theory of functional equivalence, and accurately express the connotation of the original poem. Above all, the translator has adopted literal translation when translating the above verse. in order to achieve the requirement of the theory of functional equivalence, which enabled the target readers to have the same experience as the original readers. This was the most fundamental purpose of using the literal translation here.

Abstract (sommario):
The study aims at filling the gap in the translation of Quranic verses concerning social etiquette[1]. Translating culture specific items (CSIs) can be challenging because certain elements have meanings particular to the culture and the language in which they appear. These meanings do not exist necessarily in other cultures. Translation strategies tend to solve translational problems by applying specific procedures to the translated text. The article at hand has studied the translation strategies used by seven translations of the Holy Quran relating to social etiquette, based on the selection of Quranic verses pertaining to social etiquette as followed by practicing Muslims through analyzing nine English translations from 1930 to 2009. It is found that the dominant translation strategy is the literal translation, with 89% of all strategies in preference to other strategies such as free translation, neutralization, paraphrasing, lexical creation, and adaptation.[1] Eittquette is defined as “a set of customs and rules for polite behaviour, especially among a particular class of people” Collins (2022).

Abstract (sommario):
Among the many concerns about poetry translation, untranslatability is the most critical one. Translators often face difficulties in offering an authentic translation in target language. It is, after all, the translator who may decide how to address this issue. One phenomenal Bengali poem entitled Bidrohi, written by the “rebel” poet Kazi Nazrul Islam can be regarded as a text that contains untranslatability issues to a large extent. It is to be noted that there are some translation-techniques - both for any type of source text and for poetry in particular –that are suggested by translation theorists like, for example, Vinay and Darbelnet, Andre Lefevere, and Peter Newmark. Whereas Vinay and Darbelnet categorized the general translation procedures into two methods (direct and oblique translation), Lefever suggested a catalogue of seven possible strategies for translating poetry. On the other hand, Newmark’s strategies include semantic and free translation. However, as the translator is the agent of authenticity and closeness in translation, s/he has a huge role to play in assessing, choosing, and combining the existing translation techniques according to the source text. This paper aims to explore the role of the translator and to figure out if there is a certain effective approach that can be made towards a poem that is difficult to translate. In order to achieve that ground, two translations of Bidrohi– one offered by Professor Kabir Chowdhury, and the other by Mohammad Nurul Huda have been analyzed. The findings of this research paper indicate that the two translations in major parts show two different combinations of translation strategies. This paper takes the terms “Direct” and “oblique” translation as coined by Vinay and Darbelnet to show that both the translations tend to switch between these two general translation approaches. In addition, both the translations highlight some poetry translation-techniques like Lefevere’s “phonemic translation” or Peter Newmark’s semantic translation, which too, serve the purpose of overcoming untranslatability. The findings also show that there is no single effective approach in overcoming untranslatability in poetry. Overall, it can be concluded that when a poem appears nearly-untranslatable, a balanced combination of “direct” and “oblique” translation as well as some selected poetry-translation strategies can be an effective standpoint. This paper does not claim to discuss untranslatability issues in any other genre but poetry.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This paper addresses the unique challenges a translator would have when translating a text from a postcolonial country, especially one that has significance amongst the language speakers, such as Cilapattikaram. This paper compares three English translations of Cilapattikaram, a centuries-old Tamil poem that has an undeniable significance among the Tamil-speaking population. By analyzing three English translations of Cilapattikaram, done in the 1930s, 1960s, and 1990s, respectively, the paper examines how translation situated in the political space of decolonization and regional identity affects the text for a better understanding of the dilemmas of the translator and the effect of translation has on the meanings of the text.

Abstract (sommario):
This research aims to describe the errors made by students when translating the informative text using Google Translate and to describe the role of Google Translate in the translation’s process. In this study, the two data were (1) the words and phrases containing equivalence errors in the translation results by the students and (2) the students’ statements showing the role of Google Translator in the translation’s process. The results showed that the students made two errors in translating the informative text, namely (1) misinterpretation and (2) non-equivalent context. Regarding the role of Google Translate, the student considered it as a helpful tool in the translation process. They stated that Google Translate helps in providing an overview of the source text and can reduce the translation time. The result showed that Google Translate can give an overview of the meanings of the source language but doesn’t shorten the translation time.

Abstract (sommario):
In recent years, Natural Language Processing (NLP) models such as Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3 (GPT-3) have shown remarkable improvements in various language-related tasks, including machine translation. However, most studies that have evaluated the performance of NLP models in translation tasks have focused on general-purpose text, leaving the evaluation of their effectiveness in handling specialized text to be relatively unexplored. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of GPT-3 in translating specialized Arabic text to English and compare its performance to human translation. To achieve this goal, the study selected ten chapters from a specialized book written in Arabic, covering topics in specialized religious context. The chapters were translated by a professional human translator and by GPT-3 using its translation Application Programming Interface. The translation performance of GPT-3 to was compared to human translation using qualitative measures, specifically the Direct Assessment method. Additionally, the translations were evaluated using two different evaluation metrics, Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) score and Recall-Oriented Understudy for Gisting Evaluation (ROUGE) metric, which measure the similarity between the translated text and the reference text. The qualitative results show that GPT produced generally understandable translations but failed to capture nuances and cultural context. On the other hand, the quantitative results of the study showed that GPT-3 was able to achieve a relatively high level of accuracy in translating specialized religious text, with comparable scores to human translations in some cases. Specifically, the BERT score of GPT-3 translations was 0.83. The study also found that the Rouge score failed to fully reflect the capabilities of GPT-3 in translating specialized text.Overall, the findings of this study suggest that GPT-3 has promising potential as a translation tool for specialized religious text, but further research is needed to improve its capabilities and address its limitations.

Hjort-Pedersen, Mette. "Free vs. Faithful – Towards Identifying the Relationship between Academic and Professional Criteria for Legal Translation". ELOPE: English Language Overseas Perspectives and Enquiries 13, n. 2 (16 dicembre 2016): 225–39. http://dx.doi.org/10.4312/elope.13.2.225-239.

Abstract (sommario):
For many years translation theorists have discussed the degree of translational freedom a legal translator has in rendering the meaning of a legal source text in a translation. Some believe that in order to achieve the communicative purpose, legal translators should focus on readability and bias their translation towards the target language community. Others insist that because of the special nature of legal texts and the sometimes binding force of legal translations, translators should stay as close to the source text as possible, i.e., bias their translation towards the source language community. But what is the relationship between these ‘academic’ observations and the way professional users and producers, i.e., lawyers and translators, think of legal translation? This article examines how actors on the Danish legal translation market view translational manoeuvres that result in a more or less close relationship between a legal source text and its translation, and also the translator’s power to decide what the nature of this relationship should be and how it should manifest itself in the translation.
