Abstract (sommario):
This paper focuses on translational shifts with respect to the demonstrative determiner in French and Dutch in parallel corpora. The paper aims to identify the types of translation shifts that occur systematically, and to explore the underlying mechanisms and semantic effects of this process. For this purpose, a well-balanced sub-corpus of the Dutch Parallel Corpus is used, making it possible to analyze both directions (French – Dutch and Dutch – French). In this corpus, 50% of the demonstrative determiners are translated by a demonstrative in the target text (in both directions). In 20% of the cases, the demonstrative is translated by a definite article, or vice versa, while 30% are translated by another grammatical element (e.g., indefinite determiner, adverb, personal pronoun) or vice versa. The parallel corpus study reveals that translational shifts with respect to French and Dutch demonstratives can be attributed to three different mechanisms: (1) translator preference related to translation universals at the level of the noun phrase (omissions, additions and reformulations of the noun phrase), (2) specific manifestations of translation universals within the noun phrase (syntagmatic and paradigmatic explicitation and implicitation involving demonstrative shifting) and (3) structural divergences between the French and Dutch demonstrative determiner systems (fixed expressions and semantic differences). This analysis demonstrates the usefulness of a detailed parallel corpus study, which clearly distinguishes between changes occurring at different levels, in accounting for divergent translations of the demonstrative determiner in different languages. To this end, several types of explanation drawn from various fields (such as translation studies and contrastive linguistics), must be considered.

Abstract (sommario):
Literary translations throughout the world are mostly made from English, so a translator is needed to translate into other languages. Translation is defined as the process of transferring a source language message (TL) into the target language (TL) in an equivalent manner. Translation of the journal entitled "Fiction from the Periphery: How Dutch Writers Enter the Field of English Language Literature” discusses the analyzes carried out in translation, the translation methods and techniques applied. This analysis focuses only on Chap Fiction from the Periphery: Implications of the Dutch Case. The application of translation methods and techniques is used to produce reasonable, clear and appropriate translation. This article determines by what mechanisms Dutch writers overcome the obstacles they encounter at the macro, meso, and micro levels. This draws on sociological understandings of how writers from peripheral countries can enter internationally dominant centers, suggesting that such understandings are part of the same theoretical approach that explains the much more frequent flow from centers to peripheral countries.

Abstract (sommario):
On 12 February 2020, while on an international tour promoting Behrouz Boochani’s No Friend but the Mountains: Writing from Manus Prison, the translator of the book, Omid Tofighian, participated in a seminar at Utrecht University, organised by Australian academic, Anna Poletti (associate professor of English language and culture, Utrecht University). Poletti is also co-editor of the journal Biography: an interdisciplinary quarterly, which published a special issue on No Friend but the Mountains in 2020 (Vol. 43, No. 4). The seminar involved Poletti, Tofighian and translation scholar, Onno Kosters (assistant professor of English literature and translation studies, Utrecht University) in conversation. Iranian–Dutch filmmaker, Arash Kamali Sarvestani, co-director with Boochani of the film Chauka, Please Tell Us the Time (2017), was in attendance, as well as the Dutch publisher, Jurgen Maas (Uitgeverij Jurgen Maas, Dutch translation based on the English translation). The event was titled ‘No Friend but the Mountains: Translation in Digital Times’. The following dialogue, ‘Translation in Digital Times: Omid Tofighian on Translating the Manus Prison Narratives’, is derived from this seminar and focuses on Tofighian’s translation of the book from Persian/Farsi into English. The topics covered include the Dutch translation from Tofighian’s English translation, genre and anti-genre, horrific surrealism, Kurdish elements and influences, the Kurdish translation (from Tofighian’s English translation), translation as activism, process and technology.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper deals with key issues related to the study of the Russian translation of the Quran, printed in St. Petersburg in 1716. The article provides information about the French and Dutch editions of the Du Ryer translation of 1647. Their structure is compared with the structure of the Russian translation. The possibility of obtaining a French edition from both France and the Netherlands is considered. The question is raised about the possibility of the Russian translator acquaintance with the Dutch version made by J.H. Glazenmaker. However the presence of chapter numbering and correct transmission of the description of the mythical animal Burak in the Dutch translation show that the Dutch translation was not used by the Russian translator. Three stages of working on the Russian translation are differentiated. This raises the problem of identifying the nature of the original Russian translation and the method of work of an anonymous translator on the French text.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Ambiguity in translation is highly prevalent, and has consequences for second-language learning and for bilingual lexical processing. To better understand this phenomenon, the current study compared the determinants of translation ambiguity across four sets of translation norms from English to Spanish, Dutch, German and Hebrew. The number of translations an English word received was correlated across these different languages, and was also correlated with the number of senses the word has in English, demonstrating that translation ambiguity is partially determined by within-language semantic ambiguity. For semantically-ambiguous English words, the probability of the different translations in Spanish and Hebrew was predicted by the meaning-dominance structure in English, beyond the influence of other lexical and semantic factors, for bilinguals translating from their L1, and translating from their L2. These findings are consistent with models postulating direct access to meaning from L2 words for moderately-proficient bilinguals.

Abstract (sommario):
We may assume that there is a relationship between the various ways in which literary texts can be interpreted, and the strategies that can be applied in their translation. Inevitably, translation strategies only pay attention to a limited number of aspects of the original text. It is, indeed, impossible to preserve all the aspects of a literary text in translation - the whole contents, the exact form, the rhythm, metaphors, puns and so on. This implies that the translator always has to choose so as to keep the features he considers most important, while giving up others. Since translation is a special kind of interpreting and reading, reading and translation strategies are bound to be interrelated. This paper deals with the influence of translating on the reading competence (and vice versa) and shows that when one is translating a text, one becomes more aware of the different ways in which it can be read and interpreted, and this, in turn, makes the translator more conscious of the choices (s)he can make. It is possible, then, to establish a 'hierarchy of priorities' in which the translator can take translation decisions more deliberately. I became aware of this influence of translating on reading attitude when I was leading a translation project at the University of Groningen, in which a group of students translated a number of poems of the Spanish poets Antonio Colinas and Julio Llamazares into Dutch. It appeared that during the classes, while we discussed the first Dutch versions of the poems, the students became gradually aware of a number of features they had not realized before, such as the intentional ambiguity of Colinas' word order, the use and significant position of certain key words, the musical qualities of the poems and the etymology of certain terms. This changing attitude brought about a number of modifications in our translations: the source texts were followed with more precision, importance was given to the preservation of various interpretations and the identification of key terms, the etymology of words was maintained wherever possible, the students tried to keep rhythm and musical effects and became sensitive to word order. This experience shows us that translation can have a useful place in the teaching of foreign languages, in that it sharpens the reading attitude, stimulates the analyzing and interpreting competences, and makes students more aware of the various choices they have when translating, and of the consequences these bring about.

Abstract (sommario):
This is the first review of the existing research on the topic of indirect translation in Dutch-Russian language pair. Both theoretical justifications for the study of this problem (H. Pięta, M. Ringmar, C. Dollerup, etc.) and the results of empirical research (I. E. Kuznetsova, H. van der Tak, I. M. Michajlova, etc.) are presented. The paper includes observations on the influence of the mediating language on the creation of the first dictionaries, translation of scientific works, legal documents and fiction, and separately highlights the issue of using English as a “pivot language” in popular online translators. The main problem in this case becomes the translation of personal pronouns and homonyms. In recent years, on the one hand, researchers have been fighting the stigmatisation of mediated translation as a priori inferior and proving that mediated languages link distant cultures and play an important role in the dissemination of literature. On the other hand, textual analyses of different types of indirect translations reveal errors and inaccuracies that could have been easily avoided in direct translation. An intermediary translation can be seen as a translation made with the help of a language other than the source language, but not necessarily from a “third language”: when translation plurality occurs, we can often speak of intralanguage indirect translation. This paper uses Multatuli’s novel Max Havelaar as an illustration, in particular the 1959 Russian edition, where German and Russian translations mediate. Resorting to the help of their predecessors, the Russian translators omit the same fragments, use similar paraphrases, and repeat lexical and phonetic distortions. The use of mediating texts is certainly related to extra-linguistic factors: lack of translators, demand for texts, publishers’ desire to reduce costs or speed up the translation process. The study of specific cases of indirect translation and further systematisation of the identified distortions allows us to track negative trends, and the novel Max Havelaar and its translations into different languages can serve as material for identifying these patterns.

Korpel, Luc G. "Rhetoric and Dutch Translation Theory (1750-1820)1". Target. International Journal of Translation Studies 5, n. 1 (1 gennaio 1993): 55–69. http://dx.doi.org/10.1075/target.5.1.05kor.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Due to the influence of rhetoric, Dutch translation theory between 1750 and 1820, like translation theory in other Western European countries in those days, was primarily concerned with the effect of a translation on the Dutch public and the verbal appearance of the Dutch version. This functional approach was reinforced by the definition of translation as interpretatio, imitatio or exercitatio. The translational technique which follows from this prospective orientation is one of adaptation, correction and improvement. By the end of the period, Dutch translation theory seemed to be moving away slowly from the rhetorical tradition, as a result of two major changes: (1) a growing concern as of ± 1780 for fidelity to the verbal aspects of the original within the interpretatio-approach, and (2) a decrease in the popularity of imitatio as a creative technique after 1800. Unlike Germany, translation theory in The Netherlands had not made the crucial step towards a new theory of language before 1820.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This article discusses translation processes of proficient students who translate Latin fables into Dutch in secondary school. The participants performed two tasks on a computer. They translated a Latin fable and edited a Dutch translation of another Latin fable while their activities were monitored by eye-tracker, screencast and keystroke logging. Immediately after the tasks the participants were invited to view their eye-tracking film and retrace their thoughts at the time of translating (stimulated recall). The article focuses on the stimulated recall interviews, and more specifically on the role of revision in the translation process. It presents a case study of one participant, as well as the strategies participants described to have used in tackling two specific translation problems. Data suggest that proficient participants rely on text comprehension rather than morphological knowledge to solve translation problems. The research shows three key elements as indicators for successful translation process resulting in a coherent target text: (1) a wide variety of problem-solving strategies and the ability to switch strategies, (2) the availability and use of metalanguage to verbalise the chosen strategy, and (3) revision of the target text.

Abstract (sommario):
In a multiple-session training study, native English speakers learned foreign Dutch vocabulary items that mapped to English either in a one-to-one way (translation-unambiguous) or in a one-to-many way (translation-ambiguous), such that two Dutch words corresponded to a single English translation. Critically, these two translation-ambiguous Dutch words were taught on consecutive trials in the same session, or were presented separately, such that each word was taught in a separate session. Translation-ambiguous words were produced and recognized substantially less accurately than translation-unambiguous words on tests administered one and three weeks after training. An ambiguity advantage emerged, however, in a free-recall test. Interestingly, teaching both translations together led to superior performance over teaching them in separate sessions, in which case the translation learned first enjoyed a considerable advantage over that learned second. These findings underscore the importance of order of acquisition in second-language vocabulary learning, and have practical implications for language instruction.

Kratz, Julia. "Translating African folktales for children into German : challenges, strategies and solutions". Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/85776.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: South African author Linda Rode‘s book In die Nimmer-Immer Bos (2009a) and Elsa Silke‘s English translation thereof In the Never-Ever Wood (2009b) have won a number of prizes in South Africa, which is evidence both of the quality of the anthology and its translation, as well as of the continued significance of the folktale genre in today‘s fast-paced, modern society. People continue to make sense of the world through telling stories and, although the stories told today might be marked by life in the 21st century, our ancestors‘ stories are still appreciated by many. Although Rode‘s tales are not unlike other folktales, her collection differs in that it is a mosaic of cultures and their folklore spanning the globe, a book that appeals to the whole family, and to young readers and listeners in particular. Through a practical translation into German of selected tales from Silke‘s English version of Rode‘s book, the present thesis investigates ways and means of translating folktales for children. A functional approach was suggested, taking into account the European audience as well as the original intention of the author. As such, the author‘s style was naturalised and an attempt was made to replicate it in the target language, whereas culture-specific items relevant to the setting of the individual tales were retained. Hans J. Vermeer‘s skopos theory, as enhanced by Christiane Nord, as well as Lawrence Venuti‘s concepts of foreignisation and domestication were discussed, amongst other relevant theories. Many of the challenges discussed in the annotations to the practical translation typically occur in the translation of literature for children, and the study thus hopes to make a contribution to research on the translation of literature for children. Interviews conducted for the purpose of the present study furthermore proved the positive impact of good cooperation between the people involved in a translation project on the final translation product. The resulting translation, meant to impart knowledge and pleasure to the audience, furthermore serves as a translation sample that is intended to entice German publishers to commission a translation of Rode‘s anthology for the German book market.

Schoenaers, Dirk. "Getranslateerd uuten Franssoyse : translation from French into Dutch in Holland in the 15th century : the case of Gerard Potter's Middle Dutch translation of Froissart's 'Chroniques'". Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2010. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/1277/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation focuses on the intercultural relations between the French-speaking and Dutch-speaking world in Holland in the first half of the fifteenth century. After a turbulent war of succession between the claimants Jacqueline of Bavaria and her uncle John the Pitiless, the counties of Holland, Zeeland and Hainault were incorporated into the largely francophone Burgundian empire. It has been suggested that this event marked the end of a flourishing period of cultural production in the Dutch vernacular at the court of Holland. However, as it seems, throughout the fifteenth century translations of French texts were produced for regional and local administrators. Possibly, the Burgundian regional government of Holland, which consisted of foreign as well as indigenous noblemen, may have played an important role in the dissemination of these texts. In this thesis, the subject is addressed by means of the contextualisation of the Middle Dutch version of Jean Froissart’s Chroniques. An analysis of documentary sources suggests that the comital residence at the Hague is best characterised as a multicultural environment inhabited by both bilingual and monolingual individuals. The results of an analysis of the variant readings in the French manuscripts of the Chroniques as compared to its Dutch counterpart show that the French manuscript which served as a model for the translation was probably produced between 1410 and 1418 by the Parisian libraire Pierre de Liffol. A comparison of the translated and original text shows that the translator wants to provide his readership with a text that is optimally intelligible and relevant to their context. Gerijt Potter’s modifications show that his intended audience was familiar with the habits of European courts and had a considerable geographical horizon. Because of the presence of doublets, repetitions and French loans, Potter’s style of writing resembles the official style of the comital chancery. However, a similar style is also found in other late fourteenth and early fifteenth-century translations. In The Hague the translation was probably dispersed (be it on a small scale) among members of the council and their contacts among the high nobility of Holland. Through the intensive contact between the regional councillors and members of local administration, the translation of the Chroniques became available to an audience in the cities.

Buitendach, Samantha Angelique. "Selling translation rights in trade publishing : case studies of Dutch translations of Afrikaans fiction in the Netherlands and Belgium". Diss., University of Pretoria, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/66256.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The reading and buying market for Afrikaans fiction is limited due to historical and economical reasons. It can thus be argued that in order to expand the market for South African Afrikaans trade publishers and authors' novels, a work needs to be translated via the selling of translation rights with the assistance of the publisher or literary agents, into a language that has similar needs in terms of cultural consumption, for example book reading culture. Due to the colonial influence of the Dutch on South African culture and the development of Afrikaans, this study explores the selling of translation rights of Afrikaans fiction to trade publishers in The Netherlands and Belgium. The polystem theory is also used to illustrate the movement of languages from a peripheral position to semi-peripheral and central position within a global literary polysystem. A qualitative and exploratory research design is used. Secondary research in the form of a literature review combines theoretical information, clarifies terms and provides context from which primary research develops. In terms of primary research, interviews with key informants in the Belgian, Netherlands and South African publishing industry were conducted. Case studies of South African crime author Deon Meyer, and historical romance author Irma Joubert provide in-depth analysis of success factors, process and factors that influenced the selling of subsidiary rights to Dutch trade publishers. Lastly, visibility and discoverability of Afrikaans fiction on an international rights trading platform, as well as interaction amongst South African and foreign publishers were observed, at the largest book rights fair, the Frankfurt Book Fair. The findings of this study provide practical information and act as reference guide to role players in the publishing industry, including authors, trade publishers and literary agents. Recommendations for best practice in the selling of subsidiary rights are included, as well as initiatives for further research, experimentation, investment and development of the selling of subsidiary rights to European trade publishers to ultimately grow the Afrikaans fiction book buying and reading markets.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: The Adult Social Care Outcomes Toolkit was developed to measure outcomes of social care in England. In this study, we translated the four level self-completion version (SCT-4) of the ASCOT for use in the Netherlands and performed a cross-cultural validation. Methods: The ASCOT SCT-4 was translated into Dutch following international guidelines, including two forward and back translations. The resulting version was pilot tested among frail older adults using think-aloud interviews. Furthermore, using a subsample of the Dutch ACT-study, we investigated test-retest reliability and construct validity and compared response distributions with data from a comparable English study. Results: The pilot tests showed that translated items were in general understood as intended, that most items were reliable, and that the response distributions of the Dutch translation and associations with other measures were comparable to the original English version. Based on the results of the pilot tests, some small modifications and a revision of the Dignity items were proposed for the final translation, which were approved by the ASCOT development team. The complete original English version and the final Dutch translation can be obtained after registration on the ASCOT website (http://www.pssru.ac.uk/ascot). Conclusions: This study provides preliminary evidence that the Dutch translation of the ASCOT is valid, reliable and comparable to the original English version. We recommend further research to confirm the validity of the modified Dutch ASCOT translation. (authors' abstract)

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (DLitt (Afrikaans and Dutch))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006.
This study reports on a metalexicographical investigation into contextual guidance in Afrikaans translation dictionaries. The problem that gives rise to the need for such an investigation is demonstrated from a practical perspective, after which attention is paid to determining the genuine purpose of a dictionary by looking at the component parts of the concept, i.e. the typological placement and the target user group of the dictionary in question. The discussion of the target user group evolves into an in-depth look at the user aspect, which results in the development and presentation of the model of lexicographical parameters for user-friendly dictionaries. This model aims to provide a scientific description of lexicographical user friendliness. Existing proposed definitions of the genuine purpose of a dictionary coupled with the benefit of insights derived from the model of lexicographical parameters for user-friendly dictionaries make the presentation of a new definition of the genuine purpose of a (translation) dictionary possible, which is followed by defining a polyfunctional translation dictionary for Southern Africa. Attention is also paid to some macrostructural issues pertaining to standard translation dictionaries, among others vertical and horizontal alphabetical macrostructures and niching and nesting as manifestations of horizontal alphabetical macrostructures. With regard to nesting, the classification of first and second level nesting is expanded by the description of third and fourth level nesting. The influence of the organisation plan and the dictionary conceptualisation plan on the selection of lexical items for the macrostructure of a standard dictionary is touched upon. An in-depth evaluation of contextual guidance in Afrikaans standard translation dictionaries follows the exposition of the rationale for it and the definitions of the terms context, contextualisation and contextual guidance. The discussion produces the identification of the types of contextualising entries, among others meaning explanations, lexicographical labels and glosses, which fall under the main class of discriminators and which in turn functions alongside the main classes of cotext entries and inserted texts. Each type and subtype is studied meticulously, and distribution structures are determined and evaluated through the study of dictionary data. The study of the data also results in the identification of different levels of contextualisation as well as different types of translation equivalent paradigms. The discussion of lexicographical labels takes on the form of a critical overview of the existing literature on this topic and results in the presentation of a new and scientifically sounder model for the description of labelling in dictionaries in general, i.e. the deixis model. The study of contextualising entries is followed by a discussion of certain elements of the composition of dictionary articles that can support successful contextual guidance, i.e. types of microstructures and the rapid internal access structure. The in-depth study of contextualisation makes the revision of the definition for the term contextualising entry possible. Ultimately a practical model for more effective contextual guidance in polyfunctional Afrikaans translation dictionaries is presented in three main components, i.e. (i) standards for the application of contextual entries, (ii) the proposal of an adapted rapid internal access structure, and (iii) the effective application of functional types of microstructures. The requirements of lexicographical accountability and user-friendliness remain central motives throughout the study.

Abstract (sommario):
Rooted in the field of Descriptive Translation Studies, the thesis combines such different areas as corpus linguistics, literary, cultural, media and socio-historical studies of the UK, the Netherlands and Germany. Five translations (three German and two Dutch) of Agatha Christie's first detective novel The Mysterious Affair at Styles are analysed. Using the theories by Itamar Even-Zohar (Polysystem Theory) and Gideon Toury (Translation Norms), the different approaches translators have taken to the text are examined and their translation decisions explained by looking at the status and position translations from English, detective stories as such, and the writer Agatha Christie had in the country and at the time these translations were published.

Spies, Carla-Marie. "Die Agterhuis – Lina Spies se vertaling van Anne Frank se dagboek, Het Achterhuis, in Afrikaans : besluite, benaderings en strategieë". Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/4146.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (MPhil (Afrikaans and Dutch))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates the translation approaches and strategies used by Lina Spies in her translation of Anne Frank's diary, Het Achterhuis, from Dutch into Afrikaans (Die Agterhuis). The researcher mainly works descriptively to discuss the decisions made regarding translation approaches and strategies adopted and applied in this translation. However, when necessary, a critique of the translation is also offered. The first chapter deals with the background of, and rationale for, the study; it provides a hypothesis, problem statement, methodology and the research questions. The next chapter provides background information on the source text, as well as considering reasons why this source text was translated into Afrikaans. The translator (Spies) as an agent of power is discussed as well. In the third chapter, the literature review, the most prominent translation theories which are relevant to this study are discussed. There are amongst others focused on functionalism (Nord 1997), intercultural communication (Katan 200), descriptive translation studies (DTS) (Toury 1995), and foreignization and domestication (Venuti 1995). Chapters 4 and 5 present the practical application/empirical study. In the macro-analysis aspects such as genre, overall translation approach and the paratext are looked at. The micro-analysis investigates the translation strategies which were used on the micro-level in order to achieve the overall effect this translation has on macro-level. Pragmatic, intercultural, interlinguistic and text-specific translation problems/challenges and the way that Spies (possibly) resolved these in the target text are discussed. The conclusion is drawn that Spies adopts a functionalist approach towards the translation as she takes into consideration both Nord's (1995) yardsticks for a "good"/"adequate" translation, namely (1) the source text and source text author, as well as (2) the target text reader. The foreignization approach is the primary approach used in this translation and the translator is very faithful to the source text and loyal to the source text author. Domestication is used as a secondary approach as the target text is made accessible to the target text reader on a grammatical level. The thesis finds that the authenticity of the source text and the literary value of this text are preserved, and that the voice and style of the source text author are conveyed to the target text reader.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis considers the translation of Dutch and Flemish picture books into Swedish from 1995 to 2006. The main aim of the thesis is to study what meaning the notion translation takes on where picture books are concerned and how the translation practice for picture books is influenced by international co-productions. The thesis includes a bibliographical study and a larger case study of the Dutch picture book artist Dick Bruna and his internationally renowned picture books about the rabbit Miffy in Swedish translation. Working within the theoretical frame of descriptive translation studies (DTS), I describe and analyse picture book translation as a phenomenon and a practice that occurs at a certain moment in time in a certain sociocultural context. Using the model of Toury (1995), I study translation norms governing the selection and translation of Dutch and Flemish picture books and of Bruna’s picture books about Miffy in particular. Toury’s model is largely designed for the analysis of written texts. As picture book texts combine both verbal and visual modes of expression, I use multimodal analysis combining the social semiotic visual grammar of Kress & van Leeuwen (2006) with systemic functional linguistics (SFL) as a tool to analyse the translation of picture book texts. By combining DTS and SFL, I study translation as a cultural and social semiotic practice. The analyses in the thesis indicate that picture book translation can be characterised as an international, target culture-oriented and multimodal translation practice. The multimodal translation analysis shows that, while translated picture books have the same images as their source text due to co-production, images can be combined with different social meanings, as for instance images of children and interaction with the reader, expressed in the written text. Images can also assume different meaning potentials and also referential interplay and plausible reading paths between words and images can change.

Abstract (sommario):
This bachelor’s essay consists of a longer translation in the form of Dutch-to-Swedish subtitles, including a section commenting on the translation. The source text is made up of the segment De online fabeltjesfuik (literally ‘the fable fyke’) from the Dutch satirical news show Zondag met Lubach. The comment section describes the theoretical background behind the translation principle and the translation priorities which have guided the subtitling. Then a sample of translation problems along with the strategies used to solve them are presented, focusing on cultural references and humour. The largest issue remains the inherent limitations of subtitling as pertains to time and space, which influence all other translation choices made.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter establishes a connection between the fields of translation policy and imagology to scrutinize the strategies employed by governmental organizations in their support of literary translations. It aims to investigate the role of these strategies in facilitating cultural transfers and shaping evolving perceptions of a country internationally. An overview of the policy by the Dutch Foundation for Literature in transnational events will be followed by an examination of promotional strategies employed by the Italian publisher Iperborea. The similarities between the advertising material employed by the DFL and the images used by Iperborea to promote Dutch literature in Italy will be illustrated by means of paratexts and a series of interviews with relevant stakeholders.

Abstract (sommario):
ZusammenfassungThe first part of this article is devoted to the origins of the early German translations of John Bunyan’s works that appeared until the end of the 17th century, especially his major work The Pilgrim’s Progress (1678, dt. Eines Christen Reise nach der Seeligen Ewigkeit 1685). By means of some textual examples it will be shown that this translation – like all other early translations of Bunyan’s works – is not based on the English original but on the Dutch translation, therefore that it is an ‘indirect translation’ which reached German by way of an intermediary language. The second part of the article first examines the general question of the proportion of indirect translations in the early modern period and then devotes itself specifically to the hitherto insufficiently considered importance of Dutch, which is hardly inferior to French as an intermediary language for indirect translations from English and even occupies first place for the field of English devotional literature of the 17th century.

Abstract (sommario):
When you come to the Netherlands, you don’t expect to see poems in Russian, Chinese, Berber, or North American Indian on city walls. Even more surprising is the lack of translation or explanation of these texts. However, the (non)translation of murals in the Netherlands has a social background: at the same time when the poetry projects were most active, there was a heated discussion in the Netherlands about the possibility of creating a multicultural society. This idea dictated to the creators of the projects the image of a potential reader and obviated the need to translate poetry. In this article we will look at the ideas behind Dutch poetry projects, as well as the realization and functions of (un) translated murals. The collapse of the idea of a multicultural society has led to the need to translate poetry through various means, including modern online media. This allows us to speak of the intermediality of poetry and the mutual influence of the original text and the translation.

Abstract (sommario):
Most existing empirical work on the effects of Machine Translation (MT) use on second language (L2) writing has concentrated on its impact on writing products, with much less research addressing its effects on L2 learners’ behaviours during writing. We therefore investigate whether the L2 writing process varies depending on whether learners are provided access to MT or to an online bilingual dictionary. Twenty-seven L1 Dutch learners of Swedish were assigned four writing tasks, with two tasks completed in each condition (MT or dictionary). While writing, participants’ keystrokes were registered. Descriptive measures were used to summarize and compare participants’ writing speed, tool engagement, and pausing behaviour across the two conditions. Results indicated that participants wrote more in less time, consulted the tool more frequently but for shorter periods of time, and paused longer between higher textual units when provided access to MT.

Abstract (sommario):

An increasing number of existing bridges no longer comply to current standards or have become functionally obsolete. Complete renovation is costly, time-consuming, results in disruption of traffic and is not sustainable. Current repair alternatives are often time-consuming and heavy in weight. In addition to existing methods, fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP) could provide a repair alternative whereby applying a FRP deck will relieve the main girders and can mean that the greater part of the existing bridge can remain. The lifespan of existing structures can be longer extended. This offers new technical and strategic possibilities for the major renovation and replacement task of bridge structures of Rijkswaterstaat, explained in this paper. An updated version of the Dutch CUR-96 recommendation on the design of FRP structures was published in 2018 and an English translation in 2019. This document offers an improved framework and guidelines and is comparable to the Eurocodes regarding concrete and steel structures at material level. The recommendation may therefore be regarded as a desirable basis for the development of a Eurocode for FRP composite structures. Like other road authorities, Rijkswaterstaat is looking into the possibility of replacing current bridge deck structures of highway structures with FRP decks, mainly due to the favorable weight and durability performance. Various already applied FRP structures in Europe demonstrate the possibilities and value of its application.

Abstract (sommario):
Mobile applications that provide GPS-based route navigation advice or driver diagnostics are gaining popularity. However, these applications currently do not have knowledge of whether the driver is performing a lane change. Having such information may prove valuable to individual drivers (e.g., to provide more specific navigation instructions) or road authorities (e.g., knowledge of lane change hotspots may inform road design). The present study aimed to assess the accuracy of lane change recognition algorithms that rely solely on mobile GPS sensor input. Three trips on Dutch highways, totaling 158 km of driving, were performed while carrying two smartphones (Huawei P20, Samsung Galaxy S9), a GPS-equipped GoPro Max, and a USB GPS receiver (GlobalSat BU343-s4). The timestamps of all 215 lane changes were manually extracted from the forward-facing GoPro camera footage, and used as ground truth. After connecting the GPS trajectories to the road using Mapbox Map Matching API (2022), lane changes were identified based on the exceedance of a lateral translation threshold in set time windows. Different thresholds and window sizes were tested for their ability to discriminate between a pool of lane change segments and an equally-sized pool of no-lane-change segments. The overall accuracy of the lane-change classification was found to be 90%. The method appears promising for highway engineering and traffic behavior research that use floating car data, but there may be limited applicability to real-time advisory systems due to the occasional occurrence of false positives.
