Kelly, Brigid Maria. "Belly dancing in New Zealand: identity, hybridity, transculture". Thesis, University of Canterbury. School of Culture, Literature and Society, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/2536.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores ways in which some New Zealanders draw on and negotiate both belly dancing and local cultural norms to construct multiple local and global identities. Drawing upon discourse analysis, post-structuralist and post-colonial theory, it argues that belly dancing outside its cultures of origin has become globalised, with its own synthetic culture arising from complex networks of activities, objects and texts focused around the act of belly dancing. This is demonstrated through analysis of New Zealand newspaper accounts, interviews, focus group discussion, the Oasis Dance Camp belly dance event in Tongariro and the work of fusion belly dance troupe Kiwi Iwi in Christchurch. Bringing New Zealand into the field of belly dance study can offer deeper insights into the processes of globalisation and hybridity, and offers possibilities for examination of the variety of ways in which belly dance is practiced around the world. The thesis fills a gap in the literature about ‘Western’ understandings and uses of the dance, which has thus far heavily emphasised the United States and notions of performing as an ‘exotic Other’. It also shifts away from a sole focus on representation to analyse participants’ experiences of belly dance as dance, rather than only as performative play. The talk of the belly dancers involved in this research demonstrates the complex and contradictory ways in which they articulate ideas about New Zealand identities and cultural conventions. Some of their reflections on belly dancing appear to reflect consciousness of and dis-ease around issues of indigeneity and multiculturalism in wider New Zealand society. Participants in this study also talk about how they explore and perform ideas about femininity, which includes both acceptance and rejection of belly dancing as innately feminine. Looking at New Zealand identities through belly dance, and vice-versa, highlights developing, nuanced and multiple articulations of self and other in a globalised world.

Song, Elodie Sung-Eun. "Transnational Organizations' Cultural Shift Through Transcultural Communication Generated by E-learning via the Global Learning Organization (GLO) Model". Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/35385.

Abstract (sommario):
Dynamic networking is a key factor for successful transnational organizations. The transcultural shift is a critical process that can enable cultural hybridization so as to inspire consensual identity and learning aptitude amongst worldwide members. The Global Learning Organization (GLO) model is re-conceptualized to bring about this cultural shift. E-learning seems an appropriate tool to generate effective transcultural communication for both culture and learning perspectives under the GLO model. A qualitative case study using document analysis and interviews is conducted to understand how transcultural communication is generated via e-learning under the GLO model in two fields. Findings reveal that firstly, trust is a core element in generating transcultural communication and the combination of face to face and e-learning can enable trust to be activated and developed. Secondly, the way to build trust varies depending on task characteristics: the detail-oriented tasks require more intense face to face communication than the concept-focused tasks. This study illustrates that design of various mixed learning pattern with strategies to build trust through the affective dimension will be key for the successful GLO.

Winterstein, Xavier Joseph. "Painting Samoan hybridity – le Va". Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/18771.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
I have always struggled to come to terms of my position between worlds. Growing up involved constant friction between my Samoan heritage and Western upbringing; resulting in a bitterness towards an unknown Samoan culture. These feelings were to be confronted directly as I was asked by my parents to undertake the role of Matai – a Samoan chief. This research paper looks at cultural hybridity and how visual dialogue aids in resolving an internal feud of clashing cultures. The Samoan term ‘Va’ is associated with one’s position and connection, and the paintings produced alongside this investigation become steps towards a resolution by forming an understanding of my position as a hybrid. In the case of this research paper, traditional style oil painting on canvas becomes my mode of choice to portray this communication. The series of paintings created through this research project embodies my connection with Samoan spirituality. The connection is conceived as stories of a sacred world being familiarized through re-enactment and re-evaluation against the present world – my reality. As this journey unfolds, the question is raised: how can the process of painting account for and help mediate the various positions of my subjectivity and the pressure of initiation into the Matai system? Critical analysis of works produced by artists Odd Nerdrum, Kehinde Wiley and Greg Semu aid in finding an answer by investigating hybridity from a contemporary perspective. The resulting research evidences a visual mode of hybrid language that has the power to speak the unspoken; the given, the Va.

Danesin, Maxime. Thesis, Tours, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019TOUR2007.

Abstract (sommario):
The blending of cultures has grown exponentially since the late 1980s. This phenomenon, which confirms the transition from modernity to postmodernity, affects the literary field and precipitates the collapse of the modern and national model of literature. It is then necessary to rethink the literary field, its history and its boundaries, and to forsake three notions that characterized it: essentialism, modernocentrism, and the arbitrary exclusion of whole areas of literature. This thesis participates in this effort through the exploration of European literary and cultural transfers in Japan, in archaic times and in the Heisei era (1989-2019). After a first observation of our present context, it revisits the archaic transfers between Europe and Japan, in order to undermine the foundations of modernocentrisme and essentialism, and to rethink the chronology and the evolution of transcultural exchanges between these two cultural eras. A third step consists of the study of Japanese mangaesque literature and its neomedieval imaginary; in particular, two key titles of this trend are analysed: Vinland Saga and Spice & Wolf. This transcultural and transtextual facet of contemporary literary creation illustrates the importance of extending the boundaries and defining criteria of literature. It also reflects the growing place of Japan on the literary chessboard and the role of the European Middle Ages in the re-enchantment of the world, of which postmodernity is the vector

Abstract (sommario):
University of Technology, Sydney. Faculty of Education.
This thesis examines the construction processes of language, culture and identities in relation to both the macro level of society and culture, as well as the micro-individual level. It argues that there is a need to understand these constructions beyond discrete notions of language, identities and culture. The thesis mobilises performativity theory to explore how exposure to a variety of practices during the life trajectory has an impact on the construction and performance of language, identities and culture. It shows how a theory of performativity can provide a comprehensive account of the complex process of, and the relationships between, hybridisation (engagement in a range of cultural practices) and monolithication (nostalgic attachments to familiar practices). The thesis also suggests that the deployment of performativity theory with a focus on individual biography as well as larger social-cultural factors may fill a gap left in some other modes of analysis such as Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Conversation Analysis (CA). Analysing data from four workplaces in Australia, the study focuses on trans-institutional talk, namely casual conversation in which people from a variety of linguistic and cultural backgrounds work together. Following the suggestion (Pennycook 2003; Luke 2002) that there is a need to shift away from the understanding that a particular language is attached to a particular nation, territory and ethnicity, the thesis shows how discrete ethnic and linguistic labels such as ‘Japanese’ and ‘English’ as well as notions of ‘code-switching’ and ‘bi-lingualism’ become problematic in the attempt to grasp the complexity of contemporary transcultural workplaces. The thesis also explores the potential agency of subjects at the convergence of various discourses through iterative linguistic and cultural performances. In summary, the thesis provides deeper insight into transcultural performances to show the links between idiosyncratic individual performances and the construction of transcultural linguistic, cultural phenomena within globalisation.

Moïse, Myriam. "African Caribbean Women Writers in Canada and the USA : can the Diaspora Speak?" Thesis, Paris 3, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA030086.

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation examines the specific discourse produced by diasporic African Caribbean women writers in Canada and the USA, namely Edwidge Danticat, Nalo Hopkinson, Jamaica Kincaid, Paule Marshall, M. NourbeSe Philip, and Olive Senior. These authors’ ambivalent positions as both cultural insiders and outsiders are conveyed through their prose and poetry, in which they reclaim their histories, bodies and tongues. The thesis highlights discourse operations in demonstrating that the selected authors articulate new forms of subjectivity, hence proving that cultural identities do not depend on static territories but rather on mobile and even volatile cultural spaces. Besides reconstructing the past through a discourse that truly unsettles hegemonic versions of history, African Caribbean diasporic women writers represent their bodies beyond materiality and choose to embrace their cultural schizophrenia. Their projects consist in un-silencing the unruly selves through the creation of embodied polyphonies, multiple counter-voices and anti-conformist utterances. The discursive constructions of the self therefore occur outside of canonical terminology, as these women writers resist single-voiced discourse and favour heteroglossic rhetorics. Ultimately, this comparative literary analysis is innovative as it proves that diasporic memories, tongues and identities are interlinked, and that beyond their respective agendas and personal discursive strategies, these authors are limbo writers who, like limbo dancers, transform instability into a recreative and artistic experience. They inscribe their self-representations into a powerful dialectic of movement, fluidity, plurality and hybridity, and truly demonstrate that the feminine Caribbean diaspora can speak

Régnier, Alain. "Word use : literary art and political intent in Quebec and Canada : the question of race and ethnicity". Thèse, Université de Sherbrooke, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/11143/8749.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract : The following dissertation provides a comparative analysis of four Québécois and Canadian literary authors—Fulvio Caccia, Ying Chen, Wayson Choy, and Lawrence Hill—and the manner in which they have responded through varied use of genre to present-day racial and ethnic discourse, as it occurs within both wider society and the Canadian and Québécois literary institutions more specifically. The dissertation begins with an introductory chapter that takes up the central concepts that inform the study, namely, those of ethnic literature, écriture migrante, race, ethnicity, hybridity, transculture, and comparative literature. The main body of the dissertation is divided into two parts, the first dealing with the francophone authors Caccia and Chen, the second with the anglophone authors Choy and Hill. In the first part, the writers are shown to employ defamiliarizing and ‘unreadable’ literary strategies drawn from the nouveau roman (or French new novel) and fantastic literary genres in an effort to resist common understandings of race and ethnicity, with the creation of a universal, deracialized literary space resulting to differing degrees in each case. In the second part, the study focuses on the use that Choy and Hill have made of more traditional and readable literary forms—realist and autobiographical in nature—in the attempt not so much to reject outright the discourse of race and ethnicity but to resignify the meaning of these latter terms in ways that allow for the production of a more open sense of identity. In this regard, by informing and historicizing certain cultural realities (here, Chinese Canadian and African Canadian respectively), Choy and Hill seek to challenge the reductive views that have in the past affected these often marginalized segments of Canadian society. Ultimately, the dissertation attempts to explore how the four authors in question participate in a shared project of sorts through their contestation of dominant racial and ethnic discourse, despite the different stylistic approaches they may take. A secondary aspect of the project addresses, through recourse to reader-response theory, some of the difficulties that may arise when a mainstream readership approaches works of ethnic literature.

Abstract (sommario):
The subject doesn't exist apart from its relation to culture and society nor frome the language that constructs it. The transcultural passage can deprive the subject of his place within the mother-tongue, and he finds himself inevitably foreign, in search of a modality of existence. The passage touches the very foundations of the identifications and can confront the subject to a rocking between the anguish of disappearance and the liberty due to an illusion of the freedoom from castration. However, an abruption in the relation of the subject to the Other does not eliminate the questions about his sexual being : on the contrary, the out-of-norm of their position is susceptible to reactivate them. Everyone knows the famous aphorism of Simone de Beauvoir : « One is not born, bay rather becomes, a woman ». This observation echoes the position of Sigmund Freud who questions himself until the end of his life on what the woman wants. The first to question the innate norms of sex, he demonstrates, with the aid of the Oedipus complex, the paths that the subject takes as a social being to become a man or a woman. In this thesis, we examine the paths that find some women taken in the issue of women's becoming in the context of a transcultural passage. All of them are the first-generation Russian-speaking migrants

Abstract (sommario):
The aging of the Tunisian population during the so called TrenteGlorieuses in France is not spared by Alzheimer phenomenon at a time when the disease has an intense stigma and popularization as much in western societies as in developing countries . With reference to the work of M. Peruchon, G. Le Gouès or A.-M. Gardey highlight of the dementia involution in addition to the achievement of benchmarks and identity limits are all addressed in a transcultural approach. The analysis of psychic functioning of ten Tunisians living in France compared with ten Tunisians living in Tunisia, all over the age of sixty years and suffering from the dementia so called Alzheimer's is suggested with protocols coming from the Thematic Apperception Test. While the representational ‘scooping out’ does not differ from one population to another, the study has highlighted a modification of a self-representation more pronounced in the group of immigrant subjects. The migration phase seems also to strengthen the research of archaic object relationship where the impulses of attachment and grasping have an important role. In between travel and colonization, the joint-culture is presented here in a job that speaks in favour of a relativism of universal data carried out by the biomedical world. Understand cultural representations so mentioned aims to provide us with elements for an appropriate care of our seniors overwhelmed by the effects of belonging to a socio-cultural minority whose identity is often defined by the loss and neurodegenerative deficit

Fotsing, Fondjo Luc. "Le transculturel romanesque africain contemporain". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/51515.

Abstract (sommario):
My thesis examines the concept of the transcultural in the contemporary African novel, specifically in Le Cavalier et son ombre (1997) by Boubacar Boris Diop, Cinéma (1997) by Tiermo Monénembo, Le lys et le flamboyant (1997) by Henri Lopes and Rue Félix-Faure (2005) by Ken Bugul. I define the transcultural as the diverse novelistic operations of appropriation or re-appropriation, interpretation or reinterpretation, as well as the borrowing of cultural signs from many different places. The transcultural thus elucidates the way in which the contemporary African novel positions itself within a conceptual space of buzzing cultural activity. Yet critics often insist on the difference and identity of African fiction and consign it to a unique status that can only amount to exclusion and discrimination. I use critical concepts such as Marc Angenot’s acceptability, Jean-Marc Ela’s bricolage and indocility, Giorgio Agamben’s exception, and Greimas and Meschonnic’s sign to emphasize the transgressive value of the transcultural option adopted by the novels studied. Thus, the novel appears as the locus of multiple crossings: the crossing of micro-narratives that proclaim the end of master narratives; the crossing of genres and of art forms (orality, music, cinema, sculpture, photography); the crossing of discourses. The transcultural seizes the novel and perverts it, turning it into a disparate mixture, because the novel itself is by nature unstable and irresolute. I conclude that the contemporary African novel, while having its frames of reference, nevertheless escapes all attempts at fixing its identity and definition because it is a framework in which generic, cultural, geographic and spatial frontiers break down and cease to present any clear configuration. The contemporary African novel increasingly constitutes itself in the fluctuating interstices of space and of literary and artistic genres, all of which writers continue to appropriate and re-appropriate.

Abstract (sommario):
Any piece of writing in the trans-cultural is inevitably conducive to questionings related to matters of identity and various belongings, taking this stand towards the flows of multiculturalism – concerning Hedi Bouraoui in any case. The shift from multi to trans brings about some thematic variations around the questions of cultural transactions and the boundaries of the imaginary. The analysis of scriptural writings practiced in fiction is bound to reveal to us the functioning of a writing that escapes the categorisations of the in-between. Writing would be this specific language where the trans-cultural, cross-border and interstitial quest is articulated

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation consists of readings of four selected films by Ang Lee — Pushing Hands, The Wedding Banquet, Brokeback Mountain and Hulk, ranging over a decade from 1992 to 2005. It explores Lee’s representation of diverse Chinese and American masculinities, discussing negotiations of masculinities in transcultural spaces. My exploration of Lee’s representation of men and masculinities is equipped with double epistemological perspectives, namely, both Chinese and Western. My project is both conceptual and analytical. On the conceptual level, I intend to demonstrate how constructions of masculinities can be more productively explained by employing not only the Western conceptual arguments of transcultural space (transdifference) but also by reading this space from different epistemological perspectives, namely the Western and Chinese. On the analytical level, I employ audio and visual textual analysis in my examination of Lee’s portrayal of male figures. My analysis has clearly demonstrated the complexity and multiplicity in negotiations of masculinities in transcultural spaces, which can be both emancipatory and repressive in re-constructing and re-negotiating one’s masculinity. Male subjectivities in Lee’s films turn to three different ways to construct or reconstruct their manliness. First, men suppress trandifference and opt for a clear belonging to a certain culture, in particular, the culture of origin for masculinity restoration. Second, men embrace transidifference to construct an ambiguous masculine identity in transcultural spaces. Third, men might transcend cultural boundaries to demonstrate transcultural manhood.

We present a multimodal, contrastive and transcultural approach of the gesture space of French speaking area and Spanish-speaking area. We describe and analyse the gesture space on the one hand and on the other hand, the function of gesture, eyes directions and prosody in reformulation examples in French-speaking area and Spanish-speaking area.In each French or Spanish speaking area, we compare gesture space and reformulation in three different cultural areas : in French-speaking area, we compare the gesture space of French speakers of Metropolitan France, (Europe), Quebec speakers, (North America), Cajun speakers in Louisiana (North America) and in Spanish-speaking area, we compare the gesture space of Spanish speakers from Spain (Europe), speakers from Argentina (South America), speakers from Venezuela (South America). We analyse the differences and/or the similarities amongst speakers with a common language, either French or Spanish, but a different cultural environment. We decided to study gesture space and reformulation and recorded from a television corpus. Therefore, with this corpus,we can analyse gesture space speakers refering to the diagram “Division of the gesture space for transcription purposes” from Pedelty, which is presented in D. Mc Neill (1992). This diagram allows us to obtain a double reading of gesture space : on the vertical axis (trunk, head, beyondhead), on the horizontal axis (close to the body and far from the body). Afterwards, we analyse the function of gesture and eyes directions and their relationship with the intonative variations during the reformulation process in an oral interview. We analyse the functionof gesture amplitude and the function of catchments and growthpoints, studied by D. Mc Neill andM.A. Morel and their relationship with the function of eyes directions and the fundamentalfrequency (F0) variability with different examples of reformulation in the oral speech. Thereforewe analyse how these three modalities seem to have a double function to help the construction ofthe own speech and/or to help the intercomprehension, the mutual understanding in the coenunciativeprocess

This research proposes a digital educational game focused on the learning of Japanese kanji. Its fundamentals are culturally based in the Japanese immigration to Brazil and, combined with the concepts and theories of transculturalism and topophilia, lead to a reflection of cultural appreciation and its hybridization. Such approaches fall within the overall context of combinations and adaptations, covering digital productions structured in accordance to concepts and theories from several areas of knowledge. The methodology is to conceive a game based on the difficulties of learning the Japanese language identified in students of non‐Japanese origin and provided by studies from other authors. It is also based on educational, psychological, philosophical and entertainment methodological assumptions organizing themselves in a position to produce an educational game, entertaining above all, that suits the needs of this generation used to challenges and reward systems. Based on such studies, some of the games found on the Internet and in the market were analyzed. It is discussed the transposition among medias, with an approach of the new media, focusing on the indication of the gaming platforms, according to the content. The process of designing and producing the game is optimized by the association of ideas and creation of an structured and elaborate game design documentation. The project creation is guided by the work process flow of a game, in which are demonstrated the steps and interactions between the teams involved in that production. The procedural and technical problems of the participants are reported by the teaching experience in the classroom, better placing and clarifying the title of this research

Abstract (sommario):
With rising demand for a workforce that can work cross-culturally (Mangan, 2011; Orahood, Woolf, & Kruze, 2008), it is not surprising that study abroad numbers continue to increase to a range of countries, destinations, and program types (Open Doors, 2012). However, while study abroad is often touted as the ideal means to incite linguistic and cultural competence, the reality of student learning is not a given (Alred & Byram, 2002; de Nooy & Hanna, 2003; Einbeck, 2002; Freed, 1995; Kearney, 2010; Kinginger, 2008; Kinginger, 2009; Rivers, 1998; Wilkinson, 2000). If higher education wishes to endorse study abroad as a means to acquire the crucial knowledge, skills, and attitudes of a globalized workforce (Miller, 2009), it is imperative that colleges and universities promote and integrate study abroad into the curriculum to foster the development of 21st century global citizens. In order to examine what businesses actually valued in hiring, Trooboff, Vande Berg, and Rayman (2007) surveyed employers and found not only that they valued study abroad as a form of international education, but also that they specifically valued many intercultural skills. However, on average, the respondents did not believe that studying abroad led to the enhancement of these skills, echoing the dominant discourse of study abroad being a frivolous endeavor for wealthy white women (Gore, 2005). Trooboff et al. (2007) noted that students need to be better trained to translate their experiences for their potential employers. In a similar vein, Root and Ngampornchai (2012) recommended that students be trained in intercultural communication to better help them articulate their learning. Nevertheless, Deardorff (2008) noted that intercultural training should not be limited to pre-departure orientation, but that a series of workshops or even a course could help address intercultural learning needs. While a number of courses of this nature have been offered either before departure or upon return (eg. With rising demand for a workforce that can work cross-culturally (Mangan, 2011; Orahood, Woolf, & Kruze, 2008), it is not surprising that study abroad numbers continue to increase to a range of countries, destinations, and program types (Open Doors, 2012). While a number of courses of this nature have been offered either before departure or upon return (eg. Brewer & Solberg, 2009; Downey, 2005), it appears that only one study to date examined the process of intercultural learning as it relates to study abroad (Anderson & Cunningham, 2009). The current study attempts to fill the gap in research by examining the effectiveness of a three-credit general education course in intercultural communication on the process of becoming interculturally competent. Additionally, it also examined the ability of post-study abroad students who enrolled in this course to articulate what they had learned while abroad in comparison with post-study abroad students who had not enrolled in the course. While most of the students (n = 33) participating in this study had enrolled in the course in intercultural communication were preparing to study abroad, there were also a number of participating students (n = 6) who had previously studied abroad. In this mixed-methods research, whose findings are reported in three separate, yet related, articles, answers to the following research questions were sought: 1. How does intercultural competence develop in post-study abroad students over the span of a semester-long course focused on the development of intercultural communication skills through critical reflection? The first article of this dissertation examines the process of unpacking the study abroad experience two students went through upon return to the home campus through the lens of experiential learning (Kolb, 1984), transformative learning (Mezirow, 2000), and ethnocentric versus ethnorelative worldviews (Bennett, 1993). The second article uses these same frameworks to investigate the learning process for four pre-study abroad students enrolled in this same course to answer the question: 2. Are there noticeable differences in the development of intercultural competence in pre-study abroad students who are enrolled in a semester-long course focused on the development of intercultural competence? Lastly, the third article examines how post-study abroad students articulated their learning abroad differently by answering the question: 3. Are post-study abroad

Abstract (sommario):
‘Transcultural aesthetics’, in Proceedings of the Pacific Rim Conference in Transcultural Aesthetics (1998), is a generic term used by comparative philosophers and aestheticians to denote a theoretical assessment of distinctive applied aesthetic concepts and experience of cultures. This thesis is concerned with transcultural art and transcultural aesthetics, and it uses the argument put forward by comparative philosopher and aesthetician Eliot Deutsch, in his On Truth: An Ontological Theory (1979), that its practitioners’ distinctive art forms, especially Anselm Kiefer, Imants Tillers, John Young, Gao Xingjian, Helmut Federle and Lee Ufan, all bear a consistent singular presentation of intentionality – crossing boundaries that are philosophical, material and aesthetic – one that draws its relationship of unity-in-diversity (an expression of unity without uniformity and diversity without fragmentation) to pure human experience. I will analyse these art forms creation with reference to key transcultural concepts such as ‘catharsis’ (cleansing), ‘kenosis’ (emptying) and ‘homeostasis’ (harmonising into equilibrium), as drawn from the Chinese, Indian and European aesthetics traditions (commonly known as unity traditions by Philosopher Karl Jaspers) and argue that transcultural aesthetics calls for critical theoretical reflexion on the hermeneutics of discourse and action, as well as on the ‘selves-as-agents’ hermeneutic: a cultivation of insight into one’s own approach to the one regulative ideal of inter-dialogue among multiple cultures. These three key concepts of transcultural aesthetics allow practitioners to regard a form of transcultural unity as the site of their final purpose and meaning in their art and practices. Finally, the actions of practitioners in their practices are not performed in a moment of impulse, but rather they stemmed from a concerted, unified motivation.

Abstract (sommario):
In 2013, France and Germany are celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the Élysée Treaty. This bilateral treaty, signed on 22 January 1963 by the President of the French Republic Charles de Gaulle and the German Chancellor Conrad Adenauer, sealed an exceptional partnership between France and Germany in the field of education. Following the treaty in 1969, the first bilingual French-German classes were established in German and French high schools. The students had to improve their knowledge of the French or German language in order to create new elite for a common Europe built as a third power in the context of the Cold War. The concept of Content and Language Integrated Learning (= CLIL) spread rapidly from the 1990s onwards following the Maastricht contract. Today, it is highly valued in the context of European language policy in order to promote "multilingualism". In France, the international sections were set up in 1981 and the European sections in 1992. France and Germany were the first to create a double diploma, the "AbiBac", created in 1994, enables the students to pass the German and the French Secondary School examination simultaneously. The priority is to develop intercultural skills through the reciprocal knowledge of the two cultures. The thesis aims at a comparison and evaluation of the didactic added value of bilingual education in France and Germany and deals the following questions: To what extent does bilingual teaching add value to the student's historical knowledge and skills? Can we observe an acquisition of a Franco-German and/or European competence? For this, we use the German concept of "historical consciousness" ("Geschichtsbewusstsein") as a heuristic instrument and place it in a European perspective. In the first part of this thesis, we present the development of this cooperation in the historical and cultural context of the Franco-German cooperation. The second part deals with the daily teaching practice and die the cross cultural potential of history teaching as CLIL. Thus, we note that bilingual education enables young people to orient themselves in European contexts by using their specific historical knowledge and skills acquired in school, provided that the education is based on close cooperation between the actors of the two countries. The interdisciplinary and intercultural approach of this project, the association of university research and practical experience in High-schools are the keys of this thesis

Abstract (sommario):

Aim The purpose of this literature study was to describe nurses’ experiences of encounters with patients from different cultural backgrounds than their own, and to describe the opportunities and barriers that nurses’ face when caring for these patients.

Method Twelve qualitative studies from different countries were included in this literature study, in which researchers interviewed nurses and presented their problems and experiences. Our study was analyzed by using a qualitative approach.

Findings The study revealed four phenomena that nurses face when caring for patients from different cultural backgrounds; the communication with the patient, encounters with family/relatives, nurses’ experiences of working conditions in cultural encounters and cultural nursing knowledge.

Conclusion Nurses felt that communication was the biggest main obstacle in meetings with patients with different cultural backgrounds. Interpreter, colleagues and relatives were seen as opportunities to avoid the obstacles that arise. Family in patients with different cultural background was very important in nursing care of these patients. Nurses saw education as an opportunity to increase their cultural knowledge and believe that access to an interpreter would facilitate health care.

Abstract (sommario):
The dragon is the national symbol of China and the rooster is of France. The dragon is an imagined animal; the rooster is a real. They are different from other symbols such as Germanic eagle who evokes strength and authority at the first sight. Why the dragon and the rooster could have been served as a country’s symbol: what characteristics do they have? what conditions have they fulfilled in the history to win this place? We try to answer the questions with three parts. The part I studies the two symbols’ presence in daily life. We find that a frequent presence produces a familiarity that allows all social communities to identify the appearance. The part II is on the iconography and aesthetics. The morphological evolutions of the two symbols reveal that their image combines the human and the animal. We discover that the two symbols present common schemas: strength, privilege, power, etc. Nevertheless, their image is obtained in a different way. The frontal dragon is in connection with the emperor, the rooster with an image of knight and hero. The part III focuses on the literature, discusses the nomination and the role. The study on the nomination reveals that the two animals’ name and appellation confirm the identified schemas of leader, emperor and elite, which allow the literary character, dragon or rooster, to manifest their authority of emperor (king), civilizing hero or mythical ancestor. These similarities bring their image closer to the national symbol. Besides the homogeneous aspects, we find a heterogeneity in the construction of the two symbols’ image on the ideal personality of the two countries: the emperor for the Chinese and the hero for the Frenchmen

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation focuses on a paradigm shift that is taking place within the field of cultural memory studies. Recently, several scholars from around the world have focused on the possibility of transcultural memory and the transcultural construction of meaning. My research offers a constructive addition to the current theory, namely that transcultural memory is not as broad and universal as many understand. To support this argument, I have taken the Alexander von Humboldt reception history within the United States and Germany to demonstrate that transcultural memory coalesces around specific memory sites that are mutually constructed among cultures for a common purpose. I show that in the years following German reunification, the U.S.-American and German textual representation, use, and understanding of Alexander von Humboldt have come to be practically identical. I go on to posit that it is in such specific instances that transcultural memory is created, and not through a supposedly universal and transnational remembrance of historical events. My research clarifies certain concepts and elements regarding the turn to the transcultural in recent memory studies in that it demands a much more specific and concrete understanding of the processes at work in meaning making in an interconnected and globalized world. In order to show such a shared transcultural understanding, I have collected and studied all published materials regarding Alexander von Humboldt in the United States and Germany since the year 1990. In this way, my dissertation serves not only to support my central thesis regarding the constitution of transcultural memory, it also functions as a detailed textual survey of Humboldt within the two cultures over the last twenty-five years.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis deals with the topic of reception studies on the one hand and works on the role of the media in the emancipation of minorities on the other hand. Cultural studies which conceive the uses of the media as spaces From a theoretical point of view, I have made a review of the main works on reception, with particular attention given to the notion of decoding and the construction of identity. The empirical approach led me to treat sub Saharan immigrants and their descendants in the Parisian suburbs involved in a transcultural process of self-construction. I notably relied on their life stories to observe their complex relationship with the mass media. In general, the image of the immigrants and their descendants reflected in the media includes a strong negative connotation which is, consequently, harmful to their expression as citizens. Expectations of a better ethnic representativeness are strong, and, lacking an alliance with the media in these expectations, the Internet and the social media seem to constitute today a relevant alternative. The Internet is a more useful tool for them in terms of information, solutions of visibility and is especially an interactivity which makes them active receptors. The story of these existential trajectories calls out to society in general and the media in particular on the necessity of accompanying the construction of identities in an ever-changing world

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
The inadequacy of the present society model to prospect viable solutions to terrorist drifts, concentration of wealth, environmental degradation, socio-economic imbalances between North and South, problems of multicultural coexistence and degeneration of the world of politics invoke the need for a new paradigm able to restructure, in their deepest roots, our relational collective schemes regarding to reality. Although in recent years there have been a lot of voices calling for ethical change of our coexistence models, the expected paradigmatic transformation can be attained only through a new way of conceiving the relation between classical dualist oppositions: West vs. Islam, reason vs. irrationality, science vs. religion, etc. In this study we propose a new approach to reality, a contradictorial logic able to host in itself the Holy through a new scientific rigor, and therefore open with renewed eyes to religious traditions. Starting from a profound and critical study of S. Lupasco's philosophy, we try to carry out – with the contribution of A. N. Whitehead's and R. Panikkar's thought – the elaboration of what we call a "musical logomitica" (a development of a L. Duch's neologism): a philosophical, epistemological and ontological interpretation of reality capable of hosting the holy dimension as a triple a-logical experience claiming a key role also in the domain of hard sciences (quantum physics, cosmology and biology): the timber, rhythm and melody experience of Being. This experiential perspective also allows us to define a new approach to religions, many of which are taken into account in this study looking for a definition of a new transcultural philosophical model. We ended up with a contradictorial hermeneutic exercise aimed at discovering a symphonic articulation between monotheisms and outline, thus, the traits of a possible transcultural renaissance that might take place in the Mediterranean world.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The thesis primarily engages with Proust and China from the following three aspects: the Chinese translations and retranslations of Proust’s A la recherche du temps perdu, contemporary mainland Chinese writers’ intertextual engagement with Proust, and the transcultural dialogue between Proust and the Franco-Chinese author, François Cheng. Part I Chapter I compares and contrasts different – integral and selective – Chinese translations of La Recherche, and explores their different emphases as well as negligence of Proustian themes, e.g. time and memory over anti-Semitism and homosexuality, due to the former’s strong resonance with Chinese philosophical and aesthetic traditions. The chapter is further substantiated by a close examination of various strategies employed to translate passages on sadomasochism and homosexuality in Proust’s work, which reflect changing discourses on and attitudes to the subjects in China. Chapter II focuses on the creative reception of Proust’s work in China. It explores how three mainland Chinese writers’ intertextual engagement with Proust is influenced by the first integral translation of La Recherche, and how they cite Proust partly to enhance the cultural prestige of their own works, while creating a horizon of expectations and a favourable climate of reception of Proust’s work in China. With a shift of focus to the Chinese diaspora in France, Part II explores Cheng’s French-language novel Le Dit de Tianyi as the author’s intellectual and artistic dialogue with Proust’s work. In addition to the intertextual relations, this part particularly examines Cheng’s conceptual and structural engagement with Proust’s novelistic conceptions of Bildungsroman and Künstlerroman, his approach to the fine arts, and finally his use of mythological motifs. Through the case of Proust, the thesis tries to gain a better understanding of the interaction between literatures and cultures, and particularly, the phenomena of cultural appropriation and dialogue in literature. More specifically, it demonstrates how the cultural heritages of China and the West can be re-negotiated, re-thought, and put into dialogue through the fictional and creative medium of literature.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis examines contemporary British transcultural psychiatry and the consequences of its practices for multi-cultural populations in metropolitan situations. It uses a combined methodology of conceptuaL textual analyses and participant observation, to explore how transcultural psychiatry constructs relationships between culture and mental disorders. In particular it examines the complexity of defining normality and pathology in this area. The intellectual origins of transcultural psychiatry in the context of colonial medical practice are explored with two aims in mind. First to show historically how the present-day theories and practices of transcultural psychiatry came into being. Second, to present an alternative picture to that painted of transcultural psychiatry by its critics. The critics see it as a racist ideology and form of domination that is forced to repeat colonial oppression in post-colonial situations. A series of case studies of key colonial psychiatrists, Laubscher, Corothers and Octave MannonL is presented to explore the logics and models of transcultural psychiatry. This exploration shows how the status and nature of transcultural psychiatry is far more intricate and ambiguous than its critics moral and political understanding can allow. This is underscored by a detailed examination of the thought of the first anti-racist revolutionary cultural psychiatrist Frantz Fanon. The role of Fanon's ideas in shaping contemporary transcultural psychiatry is explored. Ironically, Fanon's models inspire both the anti-racist ethics of transcultural psychiatry and those who are radically opposed to any psychiatric intervention. Fieldwork observations of transcultural clinicalpractice and its alternatives point to the complexity of the ways in which ethicaL political and intellectual models are used when psychiatrists attempt to tell the truth about racism and madness in society and cure the suffering of ethnic patients

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores the notion of ‘in-betweenness’ through transcultural thinking in my compositional practice as a commentary to my portfolio of compositions. My thinking has been inspired by Tim Ingold’s philosophical idea of ‘wayfaring’ as a way to navigate processes by which insights emerge from collaborative investigations. My portfolio makes an original contribution to music by engaging with Malaysian Chinese and Indigenous cultural materials in fresh ways with a focus on music and dance collaborations with Indigenous Malaysian references, aural/oral traditions in Hakka poetry, and traditions of pattern making related to Borneo bead work. These projects have enabled me to deepen my experience and understanding of notions of entanglement and of how highly diverse elements can be unified through collaboration, presenting a series of case studies that also vary in style and the modality of discussion used. The discussion focuses around four main aspects related to intercultural exchange and collaboration: the value of negotiation, the meaning of ambiguity, strategies for navigating cultural meanings, and processes of cultural and musical transmission. Through these, I gain insights into the perception and practice of cultural exchange to find a new creative threshold for opening up new cultural dialogues in my compositional work.

Abstract (sommario):
Marketers attempting to please a large part of the population in order to gain more customers, already have a demanding job. However, things get even more complicated when the population consists of a variety of cultures, such as in Sweden. With the aim to appeal to people belonging to different cultures, more and more campaigns of transcultural and multicultural content are created. Those campaigns, being controversial, do not go unnoticed and generate a division in views. We have therefore decided to investigate: “How do consumers perceive trans-cultural and multicultural marketing campaigns?” and “What are the dimensions of these types of campaigns on buyer behaviour?”. This study will attempt to answer the research questions by exploring the themes of culture and ethics alongside. This is done to clarify the reasons behind the differences among customers’ perceptions on the campaigns chosen. In order to explain the difference between transcultural and multicultural campaigns, two campaigns, one by Åhléns and one by H&M, were used. A qualitative research was conducted by interviewing twelve people, six for each campaign. Based on our results, all of the interviewees stated that culture is directly correlated with ethics. The different perspectives on the campaigns were due to matters of ethicality. Half supported the campaigns due to their inclusiveness while the other half deemed them unethical for different reasons. While everyone associated the campaigns with ethicality, the majority does not take ethics into consideration while shopping. Furthermore, corporate social responsibility proved to have a smaller impact on buyer behaviour than a company’s involvement in an unethical activity that weighs more in consumers’ eyes. Last but not least, even though the customer perceptions on these types of campaigns are divided, there is no direct effect on buyer behaviour, but more towards brand loyalty.

Hernandez, Felipe M. "Dynamic identities and the construction of transcultural architectures". Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2002. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11323/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Latin American architectural theory has not been successful in dealing with the complexity of Latin American cultures, and in engaging with the whole range of architectural practices that take place in the continent's cities and buildings. On the contrary, in most cases, architectural theories have been used as means to create hegemonic architectural narratives and systems of referentiality through which a sense of homogeneity could be reconstituted. Consequently, architectural theory appears to be in radical opposition to the realities of Latin American cultures and societies. This thesis does therefore engage in detail with cultural theory and postcolonial discourse, and uses post-structuralist methods of critique, as a means to engage with the whole range of politics and socio-cultural practices with which architecture is inherently related. Approached via the work of various cultural theorists, the complex reality of Latin America is not seen as a problem that requires resolution through the elimination of differences. On the contrary, and unlike architects and architectural theorists, cultural theorists aim their efforts at revealing those areas of conflict where the very fractures of Latin American cultures can be found, and where diverse and often antagonistic socio-cultural groups clash while attempting to negotiate their differences. Only in this way would it be possible to create a cultural politics of difference in order to deal with cultural multiplicity in situations of inequality. Engagement with broader aspects of cultural theory will provide the possibility of questioning the validity and sufficiency of existing methods of architectural analysis in Latin America. That is why the most prominent theoretical models that have been created in Latin America during the past twenty- five years will here be placed under scrutiny. Greater engagement with issues outside an exclusively architectural discourse will not only bring to light the shortcomings of existing methods of analysis, but also provide the means to correct and enhance them. In this way, aspects that have been little theorized or which have remained invisible to the eyes of architects and architectural theorists will be revealed. The theories examined throughout this thesis will also provide the means to validate minority architectural practices that have so far been dismissed for not corresponding to parameters established by hegemonic architectural narratives.

The study aimed to translate and culturally adapt to the Portuguese language in the context of Brazil the Intermittent Self-Catheterization Questionnaire. The type of this study was methodological and followed the translation procedures and transcultural adaptation, which comprises five phases, namely: initial translation, translation synthesis, translation back to the original language, review by expert committee, and translated version of the pre-test. The study participants were five translators and five judges in accordance with specific criteria in the methodological reference. The pre-test was conducted with thirty people with spinal cordy injury at home, randomly recruited from an existing database, in the months of Ausgust and September 2014, by means of two instruments: characterization form sociodemographic and clinical, and implementation of the Intermittent Self-Catheterization Questionnaire â translated version. After the the transcultural adaptation was held Content Validation Index, with 17 experts in the area of spinal cord injury and / or intermittent catheterization. The analysis of data translation and the transcultural adaptation is presented in tabular form with the descriptive analysis. The sÃciodemographic data of the pre-test were compiled and analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 19.0, presented in table form, and the descriptive analysis. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal University of CearÃ, with the report number 562 693. The results show that in the first two versions, translation 1 and 2, there were no significant differences between translations. In Translation synthesis was contemplated most of the translation of item 2.In the Step Back Translation, the translation did not show much disparity of the original questionnaire, except some English terms, but nothing that would change the context of each item. In step of the committee of judges for review was a meeting in order to evaluate semantic, idiomatic, experimental and conceptual of each questionnaire item, to display all the inconsistencies of previous translations. Some items changes, and thus obtained the pre-final version of Intermittent Self-Catheterization Questionnaire -Version translated and then applied to the pre-test. The Content Validation Index was 0.92 and the individual values of items ranging from 0.29 to 1. Three items obtained an IVC lower than the recommended, however the total instrument was considered valid in the content. It follows, therefore, that the translated version of Intermittent Self-Catheterization Questionnaire proved to be a reliable, clear and understandable instrument among the items which can evaluate the quality of life of people with spinal cord injury who perform the catheterization. Allows nurses know the problems related to intermittent catheterization and encourage the patient to promote their health, making it a person with more independence and control of your situation, besides being more one contribution to the knowledge of nursing.

Abstract (sommario):
This study had the following objectives: to understand the interaction processes among health professionals and foreign users in the Unidades Básicas de Saúde (UBS) and the Program for Family Health (PSF); to get to know the significance of the health professionals experience as they interact with foreign users; to put in evidence bioetiques issues in the experience of professionals and foreign users interaction. It was used as a theorical referential the Symbolic Interacionism and as methodological reference a Grounded Theory up to an axial coding. Data analysis presented as conceptual ordering, lead to the definition of four great issues: (1) trying to communicate; (2) detecting limits; (3) recognizing interaction as a process; (4) recognizing different perspectives. The route of professional foreign users interaction was developed from one choice: attend everyone (indiscriminately) making approximation possible. To recognize or fail to recognize in the foreign user the dignity of human person seems to be the determining factor for the openness of the professional to the interaction, in his disposition to seek strategies.

Parra, Lazcano Lourdes. "Transcultural performativities : travel literature by Mexican women writers". Thesis, University of Leeds, 2018. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/21346/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis examines travel literature by Mexican women in relation to transcultural performativities, which refers to a feminist critique of how writers capture their normative performativity and their agency as they interact with different cultural contexts. My analysis considers texts from the end of the nineteenth century, taking into consideration the first Mexican women who published travel literature, through to contemporary writers from the early twenty-first century. The major focus of this thesis will be to show how Mexican women writers repeat political and poetic performativities in their literature, based on their trips to foreign places. This thesis is composed of four parts: a theoretical analysis of transcultural performativities and three close, comparative readings of travel writing and the context of their production. In the first chapter, I propose a conceptual model named transcultural performativities to analyse travel literature. This model takes into consideration the contributions of Judith Butler, Fernando Ortiz, Walter Mignolo, Julio Ortega, Eyda Merediz, Nina Gerassi-Navarro, Gloria Anzaldúa, Homi Bhabha and Édouard Glissant. This analytical model has a tripartite structure: occidental Atlanticism, post-occidental border thinking, and the Philosophy of Relation in worldliness (globalisation). The second chapter is a comparative analysis of the works of Laura Méndez de Cuenca and Elena Garro to exemplify the Atlanticist relations among Europe, the United States, Latin America and, in particular Mexico. The third chapter examines the works of Rosario Castellanos and María Luisa Puga to grasp the cultural negotiations of the intermediate social experience between Mexico and other foreign countries. The final chapter explores the works of Esther Seligson and Myriam Moscona to analyse the positionality of Mexican Jews in relation to World Literatures. Overall, this thesis suggests that we can understand the complexities of the fluidity and non-fixity of subjectivity in Mexican women’s travel writing by dwelling on the constantly changing nature of sex/gender, social classes, racialization, nationalism, and religiosity.

Abstract (sommario):
A Social Rhythm Metric-17 (SRM-17) afere Ritmo Social. A análise fatorial revelou três componentes. A Escala de Ritmo Social apresenta validade de conteúdo e boa fidedignidade teste-reteste.

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation examines the cultural work done by French Caribbean women's theatre of the 1980s and 1990s. Through a focus on traumatic memories of slavery, l study three French Caribbean women dramatists, investigating three noteworthy plays and the staging and reception of those plays at Ubu Repertory Theater of New York. The study begins with a theoretical introduction, followed by a second chapter on slavery and its remembrance in metropolitan France and the overseas departments. The three central chapters investigate the theatres of Ina Césaire, Maryse Condé, and Gerty Dambury, as well as the production and reception of their plays at Ubu. In a first section of each chapter, l deploy textual analysis to illuminate how the plays portray links between the past and the present in order to establish and transform French Caribbean women's memory of slavery, which was largely unconscious and secret at the end of the twentieth century. In a second part of each chapter, l investigate the translation of trauma realized by Ubu artists and spectators and the conflicts generated by transcultural performances of French Caribbean women's trauma

Abstract (sommario):
When the West Indies are really visible in the news when literature is concerned, the writers from the Indian Ocean are much more unassuming. This can be explained by the political situation of those islands. While Guadeloupe and Martinique are French territories, Mauritius, being a sovereign country does not benefit from the same influence. Moreover, Edouard Glissant, distinguished theoretician, has done a lot for the Caribbean Islands, which give them a fame towards which Daniel Maximum has a special and personal position. While the Martinique writer recall a society in permanent gestation, his Guadeloupian counterpart will claim for a culture and identity capture in a positive process. The fact that he is posted to the Negro African cultures of North America and to Jazz does not exclude the link with mother Africa, where they come from, as slaves. On the other hand, Eduard Jean Maunick and Khal Torabully, poets and theoreticians of independent Mauritius, are keener to be posted to the sub-Saharan authors. However, none of those minimize the role of the environment by which they express an imagination specific to Islands. Even though History has confirmed an identity, the immediate environment has also been very determining to figure out the origin of a “Géosymbolique”. It urges on developing a “géocritical” and multidisciplinary approach. In so doing, having at these four different authors between the West Indies and the Indian Ocean, brings into focus a culture and an imaginary which these literatures are about. These Literature “de la periphérie” free themselves from atavism, liberating themselves from the French influence, and get enrolled in their own cultural impact

Abstract (sommario):
This is a qualitative study, characterized as being a mini-ethnography according to Leininger (1998), that aims to know the cultural questions of the childbirth event in a German descendent cultural group that lives in Rio Grande do Sul, this group named in this study teuto-gaúcho. The study is conducted in a city of the rural area of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, colonized by Germans, that maintain traditions and customs of their antecessors. The informants are 18 women that always lived in this town, who are mothers and practice the Lutheran religion. The data was collected through observation, semi-structured interviews and bibliographic material. The interviews were submitted to the Thematic and Pattern Analyses suggested by Leininger (1998). The emerged themes were pregnancy and childbirth as taboos, the appraisal of maternity, transformations in childbirth practices, the traditions of care, and the domestic work. The studies about some cultures allow us to know specific groups and, in this way, to care for them in more appropriate manners, the main goal of Nursing.

Abstract (sommario):
This study was conducted in order to test the hypothesis derived from the International Pilot Study of Schizophrenia (IPSS) that the existence of extended families in developing countries contributes to the more favorable course and outcome of schizophrenia in these countries in comparison with industrial countries. For this purpose, we compared data from the 5- and 10-year follow-up obtained within the IPSS at Cali, Colombia with data from two 5 to 8-year follow-up studies of former schizophrenic inpatients of the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry (MPIP) in Munich, FRG. Although, in Cali, schizophrenics are hospitalized and treated with drugs only during acute episodes of the psychosis and no facilities exist for long-term treatment, the psychopathological outcome was, on the whole, not worse than in Munich. Furthermore, the duration of hospitalization during the follow-up period was much lower at Cali and a significantly lower number of Colombian than of German patients was not separated from their families. However, contrary to the hypothesis, family size did not predict course and outcome at both centers.
