ZusammenfassungWir stimmen dem in der Leitlinie genannten starken Konsens für Maßnahmen der Reproduktionsmedizin als wichtige Option zur Erfüllung des Kinderwunsches bei trans Personen uneingeschränkt zu. Informationen über diese Maßnahmen müssen Bestandteil von Behandlungen von trans Personen sein. Die geschlechtsangleichende Hormontherapie bei Mann-zu-Frau trans Personen hat jedoch einen negativen Einfluß auf die Spermatogenese. Der Erfolg der Fertiltätsprotektion bei Mann-zu-Frau trans Personen hängt stark von Qualität und Quantität der Spermien bzw. der spermatogonialen Stammzellen ab. Daher sollte die Beratung vor der geschlechtsangleichenden Hormontherapie stattfinden. Zu Beginn sollten eine ausführliche Anamnese, eine körperliche Untersuchung, eine Untersuchung von Serumhormonen (LH, FSH, Testosteron, Östradiol, AMH, Inhibin B) und ggf. eine Untersuchung des Ejakulats erfolgen. Zu den etablierten Methoden der Fertilitätsprotektion zählen Kryokonservierung von Spermien nach Ejakulation, Kryokonservierung von Spermien nach mikrochirurgischer testikulärer Spermienextraktion (mTESE) oder Spermienaspiration aus dem Nebenhoden (MESA) oder Kryokonservierung von spermatogonialen Stammzellen. Letztere sind auch möglich, wenn die geschlechtsangleichende Hormontherapie vor Beginn der Pubertät begonnen wird. Dies ist derzeit noch experimentell. Kryokonservierte Spermien können dazu verwendet werden, im Rahmen einer In-vitro-Fertilisation (IVF) und intrazytoplasmatischen Spermieninjektion (ICSI) mit Frauen eigene Kinder zu zeugen. Leihmutterschaft oder Eizellenspende ist in Deutschland derzeit nicht möglich.Wir wollen betonen, dass das Gespräch über fertilitätsprotektive Maßnahmen so früh wie möglich stattfinden muss, um den Erfolg zu garantieren und Absprachen zwischen den medizinischen Diszplinen zu ermöglichen. Das Ziel sind individuelle Lösungen, die für trans Personen finanzierbar, gangbar und operativ mit einfachen Mitteln zu erreichen sind.

The distribution of beta 1,2 N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase I (NAGT I), alpha 1,3-1,6 mannosidase II (Mann II), beta 1,4 galactosyltransferase (GalT), alpha 2,6 sialyltransferase (SialylT) was determined by immuno-labelling of cryo-sections from HeLa cell lines. Antibody labelling in the HeLa cell line was made possible by stable expression of epitope-tagged forms of these proteins or forms from species to which specific antibodies were available. NAGT I and Mann II had the same distribution occupying the medial and trans cisternae of the stack. GalT and SialylT also had the same distribution but they occupied the trans cisterna and the trans-Golgi network (TGN). These results generalise our earlier observations on the overlapping distribution of Golgi enzymes and show that each of the trans compartments of the Golgi apparatus in HeLa cells contains unique mixtures of those Golgi enzymes involved in the construction of complex, N-linked oligosaccharides.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar o uso do ácido trans, trans-mucônico urinário como biomarcador na monitorização da exposição ocupacional ao benzeno. MÉTODOS: Foi estudado o comportamento do ácido trans, trans-mucônico em amostras de urina de indivíduos expostos (N=36) e não expostos (N=116) ocupacionalmente ao solvente. A concentração urinária do ácido foi determinada por Cromatografia Líquida de Alta Eficiência. A amostra foi constituída de indivíduos expostos ao benzeno em uma refinaria de petróleo localizada em Belo Horizonte, MG. Foram empregados os testes estatísticos não-paramétricos de Kruskall-Wallis, Mann Witney e de correlação de Spearman, ao nível de significância de 0,05%. RESULTADOS: A exposição média ao benzeno dos trabalhadores selecionados foi de 0,15±0,05 mg/m³ (0,05 ppm) o que resultou em um valor médio do metabólito urinário de 0,19±0,04 mg/g de creatinina. A faixa de referência do ácido trans, trans-mucônico no grupo não exposto variou de 0,03 a 0,26 mg/g de creatinina (média de 0,10±0,08 mg/g de creatinina). Foi encontrada uma diferença significativa entre os níveis de ácido trans, trans-mucônico do grupo exposto e não exposto. Entretanto, não houve correlação entre os níveis do metabólito urinário e do benzeno no ar. Foi observada a correlação entre ácido trans, trans-mucônico e hábito de fumar no grupo de indivíduos expostos. A ingestão de álcool num período de até 48 horas antes da coleta das amostras não mostrou interferir nos níveis do metabólito nos dois grupos estudados. Foi observada a correlação entre ácido trans, trans-mucônico e idade (faixa etária de 18 a 25 anos) no grupo de não expostos. CONCLUSÕES: Os resultados obtidos evidenciaram a importância de ser mais bem avaliada a influência do hábito de fumar e da faixa etária do trabalhador nos níveis urinários do ácido trans, trans-mucônico.

Zusammenfassung Einleitung Studien zur Sexualität von trans* Personen sind häufig durch das heteronormative Bias geprägt, alle trans* Personen würden eine Genitalangleichung anstreben, um penil-vaginalen penetrativen Geschlechtsverkehr ausüben zu können, als (trans*) Mann in der insertiven, als (trans*) Frau in der aufnehmenden Rolle. Diese Studie untersucht erstmals die Sexualität von trans* Personen, die keine Genitalangleichung anstreben und mit ihrer Sexualität zufrieden sind. Forschungsziele Ziel der Studie ist es, die individuelle Sexualität von Menschen dieser Personengruppe zu beleuchten und die intrapsychischen, interaktionellen und kollektiven Ressourcen zu analysieren, auf die sie dabei zurückgreifen. Darunter fallen auch Strategien, um den scheinbaren Widerspruch von Geschlechtsidentität und Körperlichkeit zu überbrücken. Methoden Es wurden sechs leitfadengestützte qualitative Interviews durchgeführt und mithilfe einer inhaltlich strukturierenden qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse ausgewertet. Die Studie beinhaltete verschiedene partizipative Elemente. So wurden die Ergebnisse im Rahmen einer partizipativen Feedbackschleife durch die Teilnehmenden kommunikativ validiert. Ergebnisse Die Teilnehmer_innen berichten von vielfältigen, genitalen wie non-genitalen sexuellen Praktiken, die unabhängig von den damit assoziierten Geschlechterrollen stattfinden. Dabei greifen sie auf verschiedene Ressourcen und Strategien zurück. Insbesondere wird die geschlechtsanzeigende Funktion von Genitalien auf drei Ebenen dekonstruiert: individuell durch die Teilnehmenden selbst, interaktionell über die Anerkennung ihrer Geschlechtsidentität durch sexuelle Partner_innen und kollektiv durch die Communitys, in denen sie sich bewegen. Schlussfolgerung Die Studie entkräftet die oft unhinterfragte Vorannahme, dass trans* Personen per se ihre Genitalien nur widerwillig oder unter Erfahrungen von körperlicher Dysphorie in der Sexualität einsetzen. Mit den richtigen Ressourcen müssen sexuelle Rolle, Genitalienstatus und Geschlechtsidentität nicht stereotyp zusammenfallen, um gelingende Sexualität zu praktizieren.

Objective. To verify the relationship between smoking, age, schooling, and the vocal self-perception of trans women. Methods. Cross-sectional observational quantitative study conducted with 24 trans women over 18 years old, living in their affirmed gender for a minimum of 6 months. Data collection involved selected questions from the translated and authorized Portuguese version of the Trans Woman Voice Questionnaire (TWVQ) and information regarding age, education, occupation, and smoking status. All variables were analyzed descriptively, and the association with smoking was assessed using Pearson's Chi-square, Fisher's Exact, Student's T, and Mann-Whitney tests, with a significance level of 5%. Results. The mean age of trans women was 28.2 +/- 6.5 years (range: 21 - 48). Most participants (41.6%) had completed their high school education and pursued diverse careers. Regarding smoking habits, 58.3% of women were either current smokers or had smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime. A statistically significant association was found between smoking and age (p = 0.001), with smokers having a lower average age (24.9 years) compared to nonsmokers (32.9 years). However, no statistical significance was observed between smoking, education, and self-perception of vocal femininity. Only 9 (37.5%) trans women perceived their voices as feminine, while 17 (70.7%) desired a more feminine-sounding voice. Limitation. The limited sample size in this study may have constrained the ability to detect significant differences between the analyzed groups using statistical tests. Conclusion. The smoking prevalence was notably high among younger trans women. However, there was no statistically significant difference in vocal self-perception between those who smoked and those who did not. The majority of trans women expressed a desire for their voices to sound more feminine, particularly among smokers.

O presente artigo tem por objetivo analisar cinco perfis da rede social Instagram com produção de conteúdos acerca da comunidade não binária. Os perfis utilizados foram: Coletivo Trans Não-Binárie (@coletivotransnaobinarie), Rexistência Não-Binária (@rexistencianaobinaria), Ser Não-Binário (@sernaobinario), Nick Nagari (@nicknagari) e Mar Facciolla (@mardemar.nb); todos eles analisados entre 2021-2022. Essa investigação permite entender como a articulação deste movimento tem criado suas rotas de fuga, subvertendo as armadilhas do CIStema, com o qual rompem, colaborando com o protagonismo trans nas redes. Aqui, debato até que ponto conseguimos cruzar a História com a não binariedade, compreendendo as disputas que há nas narrativas e nos discursos para que construamos histórias não binárias ou uma História da não binariedade no Brasil. Utilizo como aporte teórico: Cristiane Dias (2018), Maria Lugones (2014), Guacira Lopes Louro (2004), Megg Rayara Gomes de Oliveira (2020), Jota Mombaça (2021), Letícia Nascimento (2021), Fernando Seffner (2021), atrelada à Autobixografia (Thallys Mann, 2020) como ferramenta metodológica e minha escrevivência enquanto pessoa não binária para construção das narrativas. Assim, pretendo contribuir ao campo historiográfico dos estudos trans no nosso país.

Le but de cette recherche est de comparer la compréhension sur la connaissance transculturelle dans l’activité de la littératie interculturelle à travers la bande dessinée numérique intitulée "Dari Semarang ke Prancis, Perjalanan Lintas Budaya Indonesia - Prancis" chez les étudiants ayant et n’ayant pas le cours sur l’interculturalité. L'échantillon était composé de 56 étudiants de 10 universités en Indonésie. Le type d'échantillon utilisé est l'échantillonnage en grappes. La collecte de données a été effectuée à l'aide d'un test de la compréhension transculturelle sur quatre épisodes avec 20 questions à choix multiples et vrai-faux chacun via Google Form. En testant les données à l'aide du test de Mann-Whitney qui montre la signature Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) à signification de 95 % de 0,001. Ainsi, il existe une différence significative dans la compréhension dans la littératie transculturelle chez les étudiants ayant et n’ayant pas le cours interculturel. Et puis, la compréhension dans la littératie transculturelle chez des étudiants ayant le cours interculturel sont meilleure que ceux qui n’ayant pas. The aim of this research is to compare the comprehension of trans-cultural literacy between students who get cross-cultural courses and those who don’t, through digital comic entitled "Dari Semarang ke Prancis, Perjalanan Lintas Budaya Indonesia – Prancis”. The sample consisted of 56 students from 10 universities in Indonesia. The type of sample used is cluster sampling. Data collection was carried out using a trans-cultural comprehension test on four episodes with 20 multiple choice and true-false qestions each via Google Form. Testing the data using the Mann-Whitney test which shows Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) at a significance level of 95% of 0.001, so there is a significant difference in comprehension of trans-cultural literacy for students who get and don’t get cross-cultural courses.

Abstract. Regression analyses were performed to determine the storage conditions that exhibited the best outcomes for long-grain, hybrid milled rice yield and quality. This study evaluated mold population on rough rice, milled rice discoloration, and head rice yield (HRY) after storage of rough rice in airtight conditions at moisture contents (MCs) of 12.5%, 16%, 19%, and 21% wet basis and temperatures of 10°C, 15°C, 20°C, 27°C, and 40°C at two-week intervals for 12 weeks. The experiment used a popular long-grain hybrid rice cultivar (XL745). Rice lots were procured from fields with and without conventional treatment of the field with fungicide for plant disease management. Field treatment and no field treatment were considered as a block, and a Mann-Whitney test was conducted to determine effect. The response surface method, an extension of second-order polynomial regression, was used to examine optimal treatment conditions. Mold population and milled rice discoloration from a combination of storage conditions were predicted using regression models. The first-order and second-order terms of temperature indicated a nonlinear relationship between temperature and ln(discoloration). The MC was positively associated with ln(discoloration), but the degree of impact may change with temperature because the interaction term was significant. From the model evaluation (R2 and lack-of-fit test), the discoloration level is expected to be 57% (49% to 66% confidence interval) under conditions of 20% MC, 40°C, and nine weeks of storage for samples procured from fungicide-treated rice fields. This discoloration change is substantial compared to the initial discoloration of 9%. At high temperature (40°C) and MC (21%), discoloration started immediately after two weeks of storage. Anaerobic storage conditions impeded mold growth, especially at high storage temperature (40°C). Low mold populations were observed in rice stored at low MC (16%). According to the regression model, the critical storage temperature that may lead to discoloration is between 27°C and 40°C. Pre-harvest fungicide treatment of rice in the field for disease control significantly improved the HRY but had no significant influence on mold population or discoloration. This study suggests a range of storage conditions to prevent losses in milling yield and quality of rice. In addition, the studied storage conditions mimicked the typical conditions for on-farm, in-bin drying and storage in the U.S. Mid-South, especially for the top layers of rice inside the bin, and therefore provide an important reference for growers and rice processors using in-bin structures to manage the quality of long-grain hybrid rice. Abstract An UV/VIS spectrophotometric assay technique was developed that was able to routinely monitor peptidylprolyl cis/trans isomerase (PPIase) activity of biological fluids in 96-well microtiter plates. The assay, based on monitoring the cis-to-trans isomerization of succinyl-Phe-cisPro-Phe-4-nitroanilide as substrate in a chymotrypsin-coupled reaction, yields a throughput of 96 samples per 30 min. The assay’s capacity was exemplified by dealing with the PPIase activity in several normal and pathological human sera. Reference values of 151 healthy subjects (83 females, 69 males, 17 to 60 years old) were found to possess significant sex-specific differences. PPIase activity factor K of the sera was significantly greater in males (5th, 50th, 95th percentiles: 17, 36, 55 K) than females (14, 30, 48 K). PPIase activities of sera from healthy donors (n = 151) were significantly higher (Mann–Whitney rank-sum test P <0.0001) than those of patients (n = 47). PPIase activity in serum samples stored at 4 °C was stable for at least 20 h.

Specimens of Fallacia tenera were collected from the surface sediment at in a river estuary in Japan. Auxosporulation occurred in a rough culture. Morphological structures of vegetative cells and auxospores were observed in detail. The vegetative cells have one H-shaped chloroplast. The striae were interrupted by two depressed lateral sterna internally and partly covered by a finely porous conopeum on the external surface. The lateral sterna and porous conopea formed two more or less curved longitudinal canals connecting with the exterior via opening pores on both sides of a terminal fissure. This combination of characteristics is unique to the genus Fallacia. The cingulum was composed of three bands, such as an open valvocupula and two comparatively thin pleurae. The two pleurae could be distinguished by the shape of their ligulae. The second band had a triangular ligula, whereas the ligula of the third band is arc-shaped. The auxosporulation was type IA1a in Geitler’s classification. Two paired gametangia formed two anisogametes in each of them. Two auxospores formed in the thecae of the gametangia after a trans physiological anisogamy. The perizonium of the auxospore consisted of a set of transverse bands and five longitudinal bands. The primary transverse band was about twice wider than the secondary ones. The circular incunabular scales were present on the two terminals of the auxospore and on the surface of the primary transverse band. The primary longitudinal band had an acute terminal and was flanked by secondary longitudinal bands. Each side had two secondary longitudinal bands. All longitudinal bands were immediately beneath the transverse bands. Morphological comparison between Fallacia and Pseudofallaica, and the taxonomic position of F. tenera is also discussed.

La tesis es un estudio analítico de la obra literaria y teórica de la escritora afrocaribeña afincada en Canadá Marlene Nourbese Philip según teorías postcoloniales y posmodernas.
Tras algunas consideraciones sobre la estructuración y enfoque del estudio, y una primera aproximación al contexto actual de la literatura y la comunidad canadiense afrocaribeña, el texto elabora una sucinta arqueología de la posmodernidad y establece unos principios para una "literatura posmoderna" que se aplicarán al corpus literario analizado. El análisis posterior pone de manifiesto la pertinencia de combinar etiquetas relacionadas con lo posmoderno con una literatura aparentemente minoritaria como es la de Philip, una literatura, por lo demás, marcada por el deseo de combatir el endémico racismo de que adolece la sociedad canadiense, y consagrada a hallar caminos de representación de la subjetividad de todo un colectivo: el de las mujeres afrospóricas de origen caribeño que viven en Canadá.

Abstract Rydström works within a post-constructionist framework to critically explore the nature of menstruation, which many perceive to be a strictly female bodily function despite many scholars’ recognition that menstruators are of various gender identities. In challenging menstruation as a cisnormative phenomenon, the author explores various menstrual experiences among trans people and argues that cis and trans menstruators come to matter differently. More specifically, menstrual activism, public bathrooms, menstrual products, and the healthcare sector are problematized as areas wherein trans menstruators are Othered. Finally, Rydström calls for a recognition of the multiplicity of menstrual experiences as they exist and a degendering of menstruation as phenomena.

AbstractNot every person who gives birth is a woman or mother. However, legal frameworks in many countries insist that they are. This chapter demonstrates that legal frameworks around pregnancy, childbirth and parenthood are often repronormative in their effects, maintaining the hegemonic sex/gender order at the expense of the dignity of trans people who have given birth to their own children. To explore why and how these repronormative effects persist, this chapter explores two case studies of trans men who have given birth in the UK and Israel respectively, and the legal battles they faced to be recognised as fathers who have given birth. It pulls together sociological and legal scholarship to critique existing legal frameworks in Europe and beyond and explore potential solutions to the barriers they create. It concludes by placing these arguments in a wider sociological and political debate around trans and reproductive rights.

OBJETIVOS El chemsex se refiere a un consumo combinado de sustancias en contexto sexual, extendido entre GBHSH y que implica un problema creciente de Salud Pública. Hemos analizado la relación entre el consumo de chemsex y el estado emocional por los usuarios atendidos en un programa especializado durante el confinamiento estricto por COVID19. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS Estudio transversal en personas usuarias de chemsex en activo en nuestro programa comunitario en febrero2020. Encuesta sobre hábitos - consumo previo y durante el confinamiento estricto (marzo-mayo 2020): Datos sociodemográficos, consumo actual de chemsex, situación psicológica-emocional: HADS (ansiedad-depresión), DUDIT (consumo problemático de drogas), DERS (regulación emocional), PPS/EES (estrés percibido). SPSS 22.0. RESULTADOS Y CONCLUSIONES 21 personas. Edad mediana 39 años (RIC 13). Género: 19 hombres cis, 1 mujer trans, 1 no definido. 19 hombres cis, 1 mujer trans, 1 no definido. 12 Europa occidental, 9 Otros. 19 universitarios, 2 secundaria/bachillerato. 19 de los 21 refieren consumo previo al confinamiento; 11 de los 21 consumen durante el confinamiento. La mediana (rango intercuartílico) de las escalas efectuadas en todo el grupo y diferenciado por chemsex en el confinamiento [“p” mediante U Mann Whitney] fue: HADS - 16(10), 16(10) chemsex vs 14(12) no chemsex [0,65]; DUDIT - 16(11), 16(22) chemsex vs 15(8) no chemsex [0,50]; PPS/EES - 25(12), 16(13) chemsex vs 23,5(14) no chemsex [0,55]; DERS - 75(28), 74(23) chemsex vs 77(32) no chemsex [0,72]. El confinamiento durante la primera ola de COVID-19 ha reducido el consumo de los usuarios de chemsex asistidos en nuestra institución. Los problemas por consumo problemático, ansiedad/depresión, estrés percibido y desregulación emocional están presentes sin diferencias significativas relacionadas con mantener la práctica de chemsex. Sería necesario definir qué indicadores han influido en la reducción del consumo para así establecer estrategias para modificar los condicionantes con un impacto negativo.

Essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation of Teucrium montbretii subsp. montbretii Benth. (Lamiaceae) from Hatay (Turkey), were analyzed by GC/MS. Forty-four volatile components were identified in the oils, representing 98.12 % of the total oils. The sample was yielded 0.24% of yellowish oil (w/w), with a pleasant smell. The main essential oil compounds of the plant were trans-caryophyllene, germacrene-D and caryophyllene oxide, representing 66.7%. Trans-caryophyllene, which has the highest ratio (36.78%), also known as β-caryophyllene, is a component that is the main constituent of many plants included in the sesquiterpene chemical class. Second main component germacrene-D (19.87%) is also sesquiterpene and detected in the essential oil of many plants. α-Copaene, humulene, aromadendrene and globulol were the other components detected at ratio of 5.45%, 4.29%, 3.99% and 3.35%, representing 17.08%, respectively.

The development of improved trans free fats is necessary in order to replicate the functionality of trans containing systems. Several different approaches are available to oil suppliers. These have different pros and cons and are at different stages of development from well known to speculative. In this presentation we will explore some of the routes that have been used or are under development. This will comprise many different possibilities such as breeding of crops (such as canola or soy), application and blending of fats (including tropical and temperate oils), processing including novel techniques and novel oils such as those produced by micro-organisms. In this talk we will explore the different options and consider how they can be applied and used to create functional systems that can be applied in different applications. We will highlight how by understanding the behavior and physical properties of fats new systems can be designed in a way that meets the requirements of the consumer and enable customers to make high quality goods that retain all the functionalities required whilst using desirable fats.

Design of automatic gear boxes with better performance is a pursuit goal of the modern automobile industry. In order to develop CAD method for the creative design of automatic gear boxes, this paper proposes an automatic method for the structure synthesis of one degree of freedom (DOF) epicyclic gear trains (EGTs) with one main shaft which serve as the key mechanisms in automatic gear boxes. First, based on the graph representation of EGTs, the canonical perimeter graphs and the corresponding canonical adjacency matrices are obtained. Then, based on the canonical adjacency matrices, the characteristic number strings are obtained and used to identify isomorphism in the synthesis process. Third, an automatic method is proposed to generate the basic graphs of the topological graphs of EGTs, and the basic graphs up to 9 links are synthesized. After that, based on the structural characteristics for the graphs of EGTs, an automatic method is proposed to synthesize the topological graphs of EGTs from the basic graphs, and an algorithm for the detection of rigid subchains in EGTs is also presented. Finally, a program is developed, and 1-DOF EGTs having one main shaft with up to 9 links are synthesized.

Within Task 64/IV Solar Process Heat, Subtask E Guideline to Market is aiming to support a wider penetration of solar thermal technologies in the supply of heating (and cooling) in industry, demonstrating Solar Heat for Industrial Processes (SHIP) to be an important contribution to the decarbonisation of the industrial sector. This requires not only to overcome technical and/or technological barriers, but it is crucial to also address on technical barriers. Whereas well suited system integration strategies, design tools, standardized procedures or modular components are all in all paramount for the development of reliable and prompt off the shelve solutions, experience shows that often non-technological barriers might have a critical role in the decision making process. Above all, competitiveness and investment/financing related barriers prove in many cases to be the bottleneck for the adoption of solar thermal technologies in the industrial framework.

The objective of this research was to develop and apply a conceptual framework for evaluating the potential of trans-boundary bargaining with respect to water resource sharing. The research accomplished this objective by developing a framework for trans-boundary bargaining, identifying opportunities for application, and illustrating the potential benefits that can be gained thereby. Specifically, we have accomplished the following: - Developed a framework to measure the potential for improving economic efficiency considering issues of political feasibility and sustainability that are crucial in trans-boundary cooperation. - Used both cooperative and non-cooperative game theory to assess feasible coalitions among the parties involved and to model potential bargaining procedures. - Identified empirically alternative schemes of cooperation that both improve upon the economic efficiency of present water usage and appease all of the cooperating parties. - Estimated the potential short-run and long-run affects of water reallocation on the agricultural sector and used this information to understand potential strategies taken by the countries in bargaining processes. - Performed case studies in Israeli-Jordanian relations, the relationship of Israel to the Palestinian Authority, and cooperation on the Chesapeake Bay. - Published or have in process publication of a series of refereed journal articles. - Published a book which first develops the theoretical framework, then presents research results relating to the case studies, and finally draws implications for water cooperation issues generally. Background to the Topic The increase in water scarcity and decline in water quality that has resulted from increased agricultural, industrial, and urban demands raises questions regarding profitability of the agricultural sector under its present structure. The lack of efficient management has been underscored recently by consecutive years of drought in Israel and increased needs to clean up the Chesapeake Bay. Since agriculture in the Middle East (Chesapeake Bay) is both the main water user (polluter) and the low-value user (polluter), a reallocation of water use (pollution rights) away from agriculture is likely with further industrial and urban growth. Furthermore, the trans-boundary nature of water resources in the case of the Middle East and the Chesapeake Bay contributes to increased conflicts over the use of the resources and therefore requires a political economic approach. Major Conclusions, Solutions, Achievements and Implications Using game theory tools, we critically identify obstacles to cooperation. We identify potential gains from coordination on trans-boundary water policies and projects. We identify the conditions under which partial (versus grand) coalitions dominate in solving water quality disputes among riparian countries. We identify conditions under which linking water issues to unrelated disputes achieves gains in trans-boundary negotiations. We show that gains are likely only when unrelated issues satisfy certain characteristics. We find conditions for efficient water markets under price-determined and quantity-determined markets. We find water recycling and adoption of new technologies such as desalination can be part of the solution for alleviating water shortages locally and regionally but that timing is likely to be different than anticipated. These results have been disseminated through a wide variety of publications and oral presentations as well as through interaction with policymakers in both countries.

This report describes a study to determine the feasibility of using an external power source to cathodically protect the pipe surface beneath a disbonded coating. The relative advantages of using a pulsed current versus those of a direct current power supply were experimentally examined. Two main tasks were carried out during the project period; they were: i) a cathodic protection screening study using a small laboratory cell filled with either 0.6 M NaC solution or Atigun Valley ground water and ii) a cathodic protection test of a steel pipe buried in Atigun Valley soil. The second task simulated the field conditions of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline (TAPS) in the Atigun Valley Pass. These experiments were supplemented by four supporting tasks including: a literature review on the state-of-an of the cathodic protection technology for underground pipelines in high resistivity soils; potential measurements with a model crevice cell to simulate the disbonded coating with a holiday; polarization measurements of a TAPS steel coupon in neutral aqueous solutions; and electrochemical characterization of the polyethylene tapes used on the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. Food systems employ billions of people across the world, many of whom are socially and economically marginalised. The livelihoods within the food systems these people rely on tend to be precarious and low in economic return, exacerbating social and economic inequality while preventing food systems from improving their ecological sustainability. In this paper, we review the different ways in which equitable livelihoods within food systems are conceptualised across academic communities, and what interventions are suggested to make food systems livelihoods more equitable. We analyse the tensions and complementarity between these different approaches and suggest an inter- and trans-disciplinary methodology.

Begomoviruses, which constitute one genus of the Geminiviridae family, are single-stranded DNA viruses that infect many dicotyledonous crops important to large agricultural industries as well as to subsistence growers. The begomovirus, Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), has been a problem in tomato production in Israel since the 1950s and in the United States since 1997. Approximately 89 begomoviruses have now been reported to infect tomato. Crop losses due to begomoviruses such as TYLCV and Tomato mottle virus (ToMoV), are limiting factors in tomato cultivation in Israel, the U.S., and many tomato-growing regions throughout the world. To overcome these limitations, we proposed a two-step strategy that combines transgenic and conventional resistance in order to develop tomato plants that are resistant to multiple begomoviruses. In the first step, we have developed transgenic tomato plants expressing trans-dominant interfering mutants Rep and C3 from TYLCV and ToMoV, and tested whether these plants are resistant to infection by these two viruses. In the second step we have tested whether pyramiding transgenic and conventional resistance is superior to either strategy alone. The specific objectives of the proposal were: 1. Design and test trans-dominant interfering constructs for TYLCV and ToMoV Rep and C3 in transient replication interference assays. 2. Generate and test transgenic tomato plants expressing mutant Rep and C3 in resistance assays. 3. Generate and test conventional resistant lines that also express mutant Rep and C3. Two viral replication interfering constructs, expressing the trans-dominant interfering mutants Rep and C3, were designed and constructed during this project. One construct, pNSB1630 was based on TYLCV sequences and the other, pNSB1682, based on ToMoV sequences. The TYLCV transformation construct was tested in a protoplasts replication assay, and was found to inhibit TYLCV replication. The ToMoV transformation construct is yet to be tested in a protoplast assay. Both transformation vectors, pNSB1630 and pNSB1682, were used to transform four different tomato lines, and generate transgenic plants. The tomato lines used for transformation were: FL7613, MM, TY172, TY199. FL7613 and MM are susceptible to both TYLCV and ToMoV. TY172 and TY199 are breeding lines developed at Volcani Center. TY172 is resistant to TYLCV but susceptible to ToMoV, while TY199 is resistant to both TYLCV and ToMoV. When transgenic T1 plants expressing the pNSB1630 constructed were screened for TYLCV resistance, it was found that these plants showed very low level of TYLCV resistance, if any. However, some of these lines showed high level of resistance to ToMoV. Only five transgenic T1 lines expressing the pNSB1682 construct were tested (so far) for resistance to ToMoV. It was found that all five lines express very high level of resistance to ToMoV. Although we haven’t finished (yet) the screen of all the transgenic lines, it is already clear that we were able to successfully combine genetic resistance for TYLCV with transgenic resistance to ToMoV.

Much of the current seismic practice can be traced to research conducted in the 1970s to develop design criteria and procedures for the Trans-Alaska oil pipeline. The major natural gas pipeline operators in California have implemented many of the procedures in these guidelines, in one form or another. The recognition of credible seismic hazards in other parts of the United States has been the primary driver for extending current practices in California to the rest of the United States. The experience in designing pipelines in seismically active regions of the United States has also provided a basis for specifying pipeline seismic design practices in other parts of the world. This project was initiated to provide current seismic guidelines for the design and assessment of natural gas transmission pipelines. These guidelines were refined using two rounds of review by outside technical experts in 1999 and 2000. The PRCI ad hoc steering group for the project also provided regular input regarding the scope and technical content for these guidelines. A decision was made in late 2000 to expand the scope to liquid hydrocarbon pipelines (crude oil and refined products) based upon the identical analytical treatment of seismic design and assessment of these types of pipelines.

The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under four headings: 1. From Source to Sea: River systems, from their source to the sea and beyond, should form the focus for research projects, allowing the integration of all archaeological work carried out along their course. Future research should take a holistic view of the marine and maritime historic environment, from inland lakes that feed freshwater river routes, to tidal estuaries and out to the open sea. This view of the landscape/seascape encompasses a very broad range of archaeology and enables connections to be made without the restrictions of geographical or political boundaries. Research strategies, programmes From Source to Sea: ScARF Marine and Maritime Panel Report iii and projects can adopt this approach at multiple levels; from national to site-specific, with the aim of remaining holistic and cross-cutting. 2. Submerged Landscapes: The rising research profile of submerged landscapes has recently been embodied into a European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Action; Submerged Prehistoric Archaeology and Landscapes of the Continental Shelf (SPLASHCOS), with exciting proposals for future research. Future work needs to be integrated with wider initiatives such as this on an international scale. Recent projects have begun to demonstrate the research potential for submerged landscapes in and beyond Scotland, as well as the need to collaborate with industrial partners, in order that commercially-created datasets can be accessed and used. More data is required in order to fully model the changing coastline around Scotland and develop predictive models of site survival. Such work is crucial to understanding life in early prehistoric Scotland, and how the earliest communities responded to a changing environment. 3. Marine & Maritime Historic Landscapes: Scotland’s coastal and intertidal zones and maritime hinterland encompass in-shore islands, trans-continental shipping lanes, ports and harbours, and transport infrastructure to intertidal fish-traps, and define understanding and conceptualisation of the liminal zone between the land and the sea. Due to the pervasive nature of the Marine and Maritime historic landscape, a holistic approach should be taken that incorporates evidence from a variety of sources including commercial and research archaeology, local and national societies, off-shore and onshore commercial development; and including studies derived from, but not limited to history, ethnology, cultural studies, folklore and architecture and involving a wide range of recording techniques ranging from photography, laser imaging, and sonar survey through to more orthodox drawn survey and excavation. 4. Collaboration: As is implicit in all the above, multi-disciplinary, collaborative, and cross-sector approaches are essential in order to ensure the capacity to meet the research challenges of the marine and maritime historic environment. There is a need for collaboration across the heritage sector and beyond, into specific areas of industry, science and the arts. Methods of communication amongst the constituent research individuals, institutions and networks should be developed, and dissemination of research results promoted. The formation of research communities, especially virtual centres of excellence, should be encouraged in order to build capacity.

The Jurisprudence of Equality project (JEP) trains judges and other judicial actors on the applicability of international women's rights law in domestic courts, thus enhancing their ability to treat cases of violence against women and ensuring greater protection for women's rights in the region. The purpose of this report is to distill the findings and conclusions from the JEP evaluation in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay. This evaluation was meant to find out to which extent the project is being implemented as planned, identifying any difficulties during implementation, and ways to overcome them. It has also assessed the effect that project activities are having in achieving the project goal. Apart from document review and interviews in Washington and in the four countries visited in March-April 2000 with relevant stakeholders, the evaluation relies on two main instruments for each country: (a) a survey, applied to trainers and seminar participants. The questionnaires were designed with the close cooperation of the Washington IWJF director and the education director, as well as in consultation with other stakeholders in the field, and the IDB in Washington and Country Offices; (b) a series of focus groups carried out separately with trainers and seminar participants.
