Abstract (sommario):
The formation of the competition system in professional golf began in the second half of the 19th century. First, tournaments were founded, which later began to be combined into tours. At the same time, the so-called majors remain the pinnacle of both the men's and women's golf calendar. Among men, in particular, there is the so-called Championship of the Professional Golf Association (PGA Championship), which is held exclusively for professional golfers. Accordingly, it has its own characteristic features, which were formed over a long historical period. The purpose of the study was to characterize the historical features of the formation of the Championship of the Professional Golf Association and its current state. Materials and methods: analysis and synthesis, historical method, systematic approach, theoretical interpretation and explanation. Results and conclusion. A key date in the history of the Championship of the Professional Golf Association is 1916, when the tournament was founded by the Professional Golf Association of America and it entered into the Championship of the Professional Golf Association Tour. The tournament is held annually and during the entire history only in 1917, 1918 and 1943, it did not take place due to the World Wars. During 1916-1958, the Championship of the Professional Golf Association was held in the format of match play (play in pairs for the elimination of one of the participants). Since 1958 until today, professional golfers play for the championship in the so-called “stroke play” format (a game for counting the number of strokes on each hole, the participant with the least number of strokes wins). The format of the playoff round, which is held on the condition that the participants in the final are equal in points, also changed during the development of the tournament. Thus, at first, the playoff took place on additional holes until one of the participants won, and today its format involves playing on three mandatory holes. In 1998, the Championship of the Professional Golf Association became a part of the Championship of the Professional Golf Association European Tour, another of golf's most prestigious tours. Today, the prize pool of the tournament is $15 million, which is the second largest award in the majors. At the same time, there have been no significant changes in the format of the Championship of the Professional Golf Association and its calendar in the last twenty years. For a long time, the tournament starts in May and is the second major among the Championship of the Professional Golf Association Tour calendar. At the same time, in 2020 and 2021, the tour experienced a decrease in total revenues as a result of measures caused by the COVID pandemic

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose:To evaluate the effects of contextual game factors on activity and physiological profiles of international-level women’s rugby sevens players. Methods:Twenty international-level female rugby sevens players from the same national team participated in this study. Global positioning system and heart-rate data were collected at 5 World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series events (2013–14 season). Results:Total, moderate-speed (0.2–3.5 m/s), and high-speed running (3.5–5.0 m/s) distances were significantly greater in the first half (20.1% ± 4.1%, 17.6% ± 6.9%, 24.5% ± 7.8%), during losses (11.4% ± 6.1%, 6.1% ± 6.4%, 26.9% ± 9.8%), during losses of large magnitudes (≥2 tries) (12.9% ± 8.8%, 6.8% ± 10.0%, 31.2% ± 14.9%), and against top-4 opponents (12.6% ± 8.7%, 11.3% ± 8.5%, 15.5% ± 13.9%). In addition, total distance increased (5.0% ± 5.5%) significantly from day 1 to day 2 of tournaments, and very-high-speed (5.0–6.5 m/s) running distance increased significantly (26.0% ± 14.2%) during losses. Time spent between 90% and 100% of maximum heart rate (16.4% ± 14.5%) and player load (19.0% ± 5.1%) were significantly greater in the second half. No significant differences in physiological or activity profiles were observed between forwards and backs. Conclusions:Game half, game outcome, tournament day, opponent rank, and margin of outcome all affected activity profiles, whereas game half affected physiological profiles. No differences in activity or physiological profiles were found between playing positions. Practitioners are advised to develop high-speed running ability in women’s rugby sevens players to prepare them to tolerate the varying factors that affect activity profiles.

Abstract (sommario):
The development of the sport of chess in Mykolaiv begins with the legendary game between the Swedish king Karl XII and the Ukrainian hetman Ivan Mazepa on the banks of the Southern Bug on a rest stop on their route after the defeat in the Battle of Poltava in 1709 (modern yacht club). Mykolaiv was formed as a center of shipbuilding, where the Main Headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet and the ports of the Russian Empire were located, and its residents became shipbuilding engineers, naval officers, scientists, industrialists, diplomats, who were the first to introduce the game of chess among the townspeople. The very first public chess battles took place in the summer Maritime Meeting, and later in the constructed buildings of the "House of Flagships and Captains" (since 1824), Mykolaiv Maritime Astronomical Observatory (since 1829), yacht club (since 1887). On June 28, 1887, the "Chess Society" was founded in Mykolaiv, which did not last long, but was revived in December 1901. The members of the Society held chess games among themselves, for the fi rst time held a city-wide chess tournament in 1902, took part in European chess tournaments and won. The society held competitions of chess problems, collected literature and materials, published endgames of famous chess players and its own materials in local, metropolitan and European chess periodicals. Historical and political vicissitudes of the beginning of the 20th century with wars and revolutions that led to economic ruin, the death of people, the emigration of a significant part of the intelligentsia, did not contribute to the development and spread of chess sports in Mykolaiv during this historical period.

Abstract (sommario):
Summary The first direct contact with rugby was made by young men from Serbia during the First World War, after retreating through Albania, watching matches of French and English soldiers. During 1916, some 3,500 Serbian boys were sent to France and the United Kingdom to study. During their education at lyceums, colleges and universities, they were given the opportunity to play various sports, including rugby union. In keeping with their interest and quality, the Serbian boys quickly became involved in the school teams. Most Serbian boys actively participated in playing rugby in three Scottish cities - Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee. Their interest in the sport was so much that in Edinburgh and Glasgow they formed special teams made up only of Serbs who played matches with other school teams. The highlight of dealing with Serb rugby in Scotland was the performance by the boys of the George Heriot School at the Rugby 7 tournament on March 9, 1918 in Edinburgh and a victory over the British Colonies selection. This performance can be considered the first appearance of a sports team under the name of Serbia on the international stage. After the end of World War I and the return to the homeland, some of the young men who became acquainted with rugby in France and the United Kingdom actively participated in academic and sports life in their homeland and the result was the establishment of two rugby clubs, in Sabac and Belgrade.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study was to assess patients' awareness of and attitudes toward physicians' receiving gifts from the pharmaceutical industry. The Alger County Community Health Study was a self-report survey targeting rural Alger County, Michigan. The survey (completion rate 10.1%) addressed issues on health, demographics, and patients' awareness of and attitudes toward gifts to physicians. Rates of awareness of gifts were: drug samples, 94 percent; ballpoint pens, 76.2 percent; medical books, 38 percent; conference/travel expenses, 34 percent; dinner out, 36.6 percent; spouse meal at dinner out, 23 percent; golf tournament fees, 19.0 percent. Rates of “approval” of physicians' accepting gifts were: drug samples, 69 percent; ballpoint pens, 54.2 percent; medical books, 49 percent; conference/travel expenses, 14 percent; dinner out, 12.1 percent; spouse meal at dinner out, 7 percent; golf tournament fees, 3.7 percent. Patients' approval of gifts seems to be related to the perceived value of the gift to patients as well as its monetary value. The patient population in the current study seems to be less approving of gifts to physicians than patients surveyed in the 1990s. Patients' opinions should be considered when establishing ethical guidelines and policies regulating physician-industry interaction.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract:This article addresses the question as to how Jane Guyer's seminal explorations of special traits of West African economies in Marginal Gains (2004) can help us understand variations within the region. This question acquires some urgency—for instance in the Cameroonian context, but elsewhere also—since the dimensions she emphasizes (reciprocity, gain, rank) play a crucial role in quite vicious ethnic stereotypes that increasingly dominate people's perceptions of economic developments. The challenge may be, therefore, to determine how an analysis in terms of disjunctures as an asset for marginal gains can steer clear of the ethnic stereotypes through which people themselves perceive discontinuities in everyday life. Starting from the historical example of the wild-rubber boom in southern Cameroon under German rule (1890–1913) and its chaotic effects at the local level, the article considers how Arjun Appadurai's notion of “tournaments of value” might help us understand such variations.

Abstract (sommario):
The presented article deals with the participation of Czechoslovak sportsmen in Inter-Allied Games. This great sports action, which was mainly organized by the YMCA, took place in Paris in 1919 to celebrate the victorious states of WWI. From the newly founded Czechoslovakia the wrestlers, tennis players, football players, fencers and rowers took part. The Czechoslovak sportsmen achieved a lot of great results, for example the first place in football tournament. Except from comparison of results of Czechoslovak and foreign sportsmen the Inter-Allied Games had a great impact for the development of physical education and sport in interwar Czechoslovakia. The Czechoslovakian participants started to cooperate with the American team coach – the Czech-American Josef Amos Pipal, who contributed to sports development in Czechoslovakia in early 1920s.

The purpose of this study was to determine if gender inequalities existed during SportsCenter's™ highlight coverage of the 2007 Wimbledon Tennis Tournament. The morning episode of the Entertainment Sports Programming Network (ESPN) television show SportsCenter™ was videotaped daily during the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament. Variables analyzed included total highlight time and average time per highlight, total number of highlights, highlights in the introduction to SportsCenter™, highlights previewed preceding commercial, when each highlight occurred, and name gender marking. Statistical significances were seen in first name only (t=2.76, p=0.05) and last name only (t=1.81, p=0.04) name gender marking and highlights occurring in second third (t=2.48, p=0.01) of SportsCenter™. Current literature supports current study's results in that male participants received quantitatively greater highlight coverage, more highlights in the second third of SportsCenter™, and were referred to by their last name while female participants were referred to by their first name.

The Historical Research on Taiwan Elementary School Sports Tournaments during the Initial Stage of Japanese Governance(1895-1911) January, 2007 Chin Hsiang-Pin Advisor:Tasi, Jen-Shiung ABSTRACT Developing smoothly, sports tournaments were introduced into Taiwan by the Japanese colonial government a hundred years ago. From colonial and modernistic points of view, this paper intends to investigate the origin and the process of development of Taiwan elementary school sports tournaments during the initial stage of Japanese governance, and to make an inquiry into the activities held by the sports tournaments and how they influence Taiwanese. The findings of the research: During the initial stage of Japanese governance, the first school sports tournament held by the first branch of kukogo school was the “trip on foot” on December, 12th, 1896. As the beginning of Taiwan elementary school sports tournament, the “trip on foot” was merely a rough model. The form of it was not established until 1901. Then, sports tournaments based on gymnastics and various competitions were separated from the “trip on foot.” On November, 23rd, 1897, the first sports tournament named “united sports tournament” was held by the first and the second branch of kukogo school. Since 1905, sports tournaments had become popular among Taiwan elementary schools. As for the goal of sports tournaments, the difference between the Taiwan elementary schools and the Japan elementary schools was that the former put emphasis on hygiene. And one unique purpose of the public elementary schools during this stage was the promotion of entering school. As for the meeting date, the sports tournaments were held on national holidays in order to convey the nationalism of the emperor of Japan. The same concept was also conveyed implicitly through the decoration and the form of the tournaments so as to teach the young colonial citizen loyalty and patriotism. Lastly, the sports tournaments not only played the role of superior checking the gymnastics in school, they also introduced modern sports, enriching the development of physical education indirectly. In short, being regarded as the best display of conveying the concept of sports, Taiwan elementary school sports tournaments had become a routine. And the Japanese colonial government showed the power of doctrines by holding them. From personal points of view, I consider sports tournaments as the first step of educating Taiwanese. Key words: the initial stage of Japanese governance, Taiwan elementary school, sports tournaments.

Abstract (sommario):
Camp leads the New Haven Clock Company as the company successfully builds a profitable business in inexpensive pocket watches. Factory expansions are made, the company builds a significant financial surplus, and sizable dividends are paid. Camp writes a series of three fictional sports books for boys from 1908 to 1911 and with assistance from ghostwriters publishes two more series: one, from 1911 to 1914, of six less expensive books under a pseudonym (Camp probably wrote the first book in this series) and another, from 1913 to 1915, of three books under Camp’s name (possibly all by a ghostwriter). A culture is growing around football, with a play on Broadway (The College Widow in 1904), added fight songs, homecoming festivities (beginning about 1910), and a first game at the Tournament of Roses (1902). The Intercollegiate Athletic Association becomes the NCAA and by 1909 has sixty-seven members; it is led until 1930 (except for the years 1913-16) by Palmer Pierce.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter explains how and why South Americans pioneered international sports in the 1910s and 1920. It highlights that South American sporting histories were central in the creation of a global sporting culture of international competition in the 1920s. In 1930, the first FIFA World Cup in Uruguay was the culmination of twenty years of international sporting tournaments in the continent, which were held to celebrate the centenary of independence from colonial rule. The success of the Uruguayan team at the Olympics originated from the continent's less visible international sporting traditions. The chapter cites how South America's international tournaments and their consolidated political meanings shaped around celebrations of national independence could now be opened to competitors from elsewhere.

Abstract The main aim of this chapter is to present an account of the work of Bose, Shrikhande, Parker and others which culminated in the 1960 proof that two mutually orthogonal Latin squares (MOLS) of order n exist whenever n ≠2 or 6. Since this has been established indirectly via Theorems 1.3.5 and 3.4.1, there is strictly no need for a further proof. However, a particularly elegant constructive one is readily available. This proof was published independently by Bose (1938) and Stevens (1939), but, remarkably, the construction is present in E.H. Moore’s long 1896 paper.

This chapter introduces the Lincoln Institute Tigers and their first trip to Kentucky's state high school basketball tournament as one of the “Sweet Sixteen” in 1960. As an African American high school, Lincoln had not been allowed to participate in the previously all-white tournament until the US Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Education prohibited segregation in public schools. Lincoln's first opponent was Owensboro Senior High School, which was one of the favorites to win the tournament. The chapter closes with Lincoln taking a slim lead with five minutes remaining in the game and Owensboro having lost two starters to fouls. Nobody expected Lincoln to be in this position, but just a few years earlier, the team would not have been allowed to play in the tournament at all.

This chapter focuses on Lexington hosting the annual North–South College All-Star lacrosse games on June 13, 1970. It explains that the Wilson Field event involved revealing all-American teams and the naming of the national champion. While lacrosse had not been well-known in Lexington, Virginia, the town knew the stakes and notion of a North and South match. The Vietnam War dominated college campuses and media across the country in 1970, which meant that lacrosse was not given a respite amidst the era marked by anxiety and protest. The chapter also notes how the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) agreed to initiate a postseason tournament for lacrosse.

He worked at Pearl Harbor until August 1911, when he competed at Honolulu Harbor in the first tournament sanctioned by the Amateur Athletic Union in Hawai‘i. Although Freeth won the diving event, the press focused on his friend Duke Kahanamoku, who broke two world records in the swimming events. Freeth suddenly had ideas of becoming Duke’s manager as Duke trained for the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm.

This chapter focuses on the 1930 World Cup. After the Uruguayan victory at the Paris Olympic Games in 1924 and Amsterdam in 1928, authorities lobbied FIFA to be chosen to host the first men's soccer World Cup in 1930 and succeeded. The success meant that the tournament would mark the centenary of the country's independence from colonial rule. Moreover, the Uruguayans used their victory over Argentina in the 1930 men's soccer World Cup finals to show how at ease they were with their diverse ancestries and independent history. The chapter highlights that the 1930 World Cup is the culmination of the intertwined histories of technologies, identities, politics, and sports.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter traces the consequences of several of the developments discussed in earlier chapters. The so-called Tennis Boom of the 1970s brought with it a surge of dollars into the professional game. The worldwide tournament circuit grew but so too did the influence of individual players who might choose to play a one-off exhibition rather than an International Tennis Federation Grand Prix tournament. The players, through the Association of Tennis Professionals, took it upon to begin managing their own tour beginning in 1990. This marked both a return to earlier player led tours and a new direction for professional tennis.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter explores the correlation between sports and business. It details the trade between South American societies and the global economy, which grew alongside the popularization of soccer, cycling, and motorsports. Moreover, the rise of international clerks, traders, and engineers with a passion for physical exercise strengthened the links between sport and business. The 1920 economic growth in South America tightened the correlation between sport, capitalism, and nationalism. The chapter explains that the popularization of sports coincides with the rise of stadia, ticket prices and advertising. It also notes that sporting tournaments implied political meanings that essentially represent the national states.

Abstract (sommario):
Tennis is a sport in which body type is not the only condition for success, but in any case, it is a very important factor that will determine an individual's playing style. The aim of this work was to determine the differences in the anthropometric characteristics of the winners of the tournament. The sample of respondents consisted of seniors, winners of Grand Slams in the last 40 years. All data such as tournament winners, players' height, and weight are taken from the official ATP website. For the statistical processing of the data, the basic descriptive parameters of height, weight and BMI for all 4 Grand Slam tournaments were taken into account. To determine the differences in the anthropometric characteristics of the tournament winners, a T-test was used for two independent groups. The results show that there is a statistically significant difference between the two time periods (1980-2000) and the time period (2001-2020). Also, from the results, it can be concluded that BMI gradually increased from year to year. Innovations in terms of equipment, changes, and improvements along the field led to a change in technique and tactics. In the future, children should be selected based on their anthropometric characteristics.
