The larvae of 12 species of Copelatinae, Copelatus alternatus Sharp, 1882, C. caelatipennis princeps Young, 1963, C. glyphicus (Say, 1823), C. japonicus Sharp, 1884, C. masculinus Régimbart, 1899, C. nakamurai Guéorguiev, 1970, C. oblitus Sharp, 1882, C. parallelus Zimmermann, 1920, C. tenebrosus Régimbart, 1880, Exocelina australiae (Clark, 1863), E. ferruginea (Sharp, 1882), and Liopterus haemorrhoidalis (Fabricius, 1787) are described or redescribed, including for the first time a detailed chaetotaxy analysis of the cephalic capsule, head appendages, legs, last abdominal segment and urogomphi. A provisional parsimony analysis based on larval characteristics of 13 copelatine species was conducted using the program TNT, which reinforces the monophyletic origin of the Copelatinae. Copelatinae larvae stand out from the remaining Dytiscidae based on several synapomorphies, including the unusual shorter length of the mesothoracic legs. Legs and urogomphi morphology suggest that Copelatinae larvae studied evolved a creeping way of life. The provisional phylogenetic analysis presented in this study provides some arguments for the validity of the taxonomic status of the genera Liopterus Dejean, 1833 and Exocelina Broun, 1886.

Deze bijdrage handelt over Bernard Van Wambeke, een uitzonderlijk man met een bewogen levensloop en carrière in een zeer woelig tijdsbestek. Tijdens zijn eerste dertig levensjaren stonden de Belgische gewesten onder Oostenrijks bestuur. Van 1795 tot 1813 waren zij een onderdeel van de Franse republiek en het Franse keizerrijk. Vanaf 1814 tot 1830 leefde Van Wambeke in het Verenigd Koninkrijk der Nederlanden onder het bewind van Koning Willem I. In het najaar van 1830 maakte Van Wambeke de Belgische revolutie mee om van 1831 tot zijn dood in een onafhankelijk België te leven. Bernard Van Wambeke, geboren te Aalst op 18 augustus 1764 en overleden te Gent op 8 januari 1841, was advocaat, politicus, hypotheekbewaarder in Gent (1796-1799), directeur-generaal van de belastingen, lid van het corps législatif (1803-1807), magistraat en professor. Hij was een notabele van het eerste Franse keizerrijk.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper addresses the journal Jahrbücher für speculative Philosophie, published between 1846 and 1848 in Darmstadt. The paper focuses on the forewords of the journal written by the sole editor Ludwig Noack (1819–1885). In these forewords, Noack elaborates the current situation of philosophy. He outlines his vision for the future philosophy. It would be meaningful not only for professional philosophers but also for the general audience. Moreover, it would be closely associated with other sciences. Noack’s vision was inspired by August Cieszkowski’s (1814–1894) so-called “Philosophie der Tat” (the philosophy of action), which resonated with the entire generation of German Hegelians from the late 1830s. Noack realized his journal in co-operation with the “Philosophische Gesellschaft zu Berlin”, founded by Cieszkowski and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel’s (1770–1831) former student Carl Ludwig Michelet (1801–1893) in 1843.

J.M. Glorie en R.L.M.M. Camps hielden zich bezig met een heel bijzonder facet van de sociale geschiedenis: de kindermoord. Vanaf de Romeinse tijd heeft West-Europa geworsteld met het probleem van het ongewenste kind. Soms bleek een uitweg mogelijk door verlating: het kind werd te vondeling gelegd. Dan weer nam de moeder haar toevlucht tot kindermoord. In de eerste decennia van de negentiende eeuw kwam verlating veel voor. In een beperkt aantal gevallen, die de auteurs nauwkeurig onderzochten, kwam echter ook kindermoord voor. Het waren gewoonlijk schrijnende gevallen.

Fernand Toussaint (Meulebeke 1805 - Elsene 1885), zoon van een Frans emigrant was eerst ambtenaar tijdens het Hollandse regime. In september 1830 vluchtte hij naar Brussel en speelde een niet onbelangrijke rol in de Belgische revolutie. Hij werd lid van de revolutionaire en republikeinse Club, de ‘Réunion Centrale’. Deze Club hield zich intens bezig met de voorbereiding van de nieuwe staatsinstellingen. Toussaint heeft zich tweemaal (in het Frans) in de debatten gemengd, op 15 en op 30 oktober 1830.Zijn republikeinse opvattingen kwamen het duidelijkst tot uiting op 15 oktober, waarbij hij de erfelijke monarchie, de instelling van een Senaat en het koninklijk veto verwerpt.Op 15 oktober verdedigde hij de ‘Vlaamse taal, op een ogenblik dat alle discussies in het Frans verliepen’. Wetten en besluiten dienden volgens hem ook in het Vlaams vertaald te worden. Hij werd daarin gesteund door de Waals-Brabander Lucien Jottrand (1804-1877). Toussaint voerde daarover een perscampagne.Deze materie kwam aan bod tijdens de werkzaamheden van het Nationaal Congres (10 november 1830-21 juli 1831). Op 27 november 1830 werd een amendement door de Oudenaardse vertegenwoordiger, Charles Liedts (1802-1878), goedgekeurd. Het stipuleerde dat alle wetten en besluiten dienden voorzien te zijn van een Vlaamse vertaling, ‘in de gemeenten waar Vlaams gesproken wordt’.In die zin is Toussaint een voorloper van de Gentse groep rond Philip Blommaert (1808-1871), de eerste ‘taalijveraars’ in de Vlaamse beweging.________Jozef Ferdinand Toussaint (1807-1885), zealot of the Flemish language. 15 October 1830Fernand Toussaint (Meulebeke 1805 – Ixelles 1885), son of a French emigrant, was at first a civil servant under the Dutch regime. In September 1830 he fled to Brussels and played a not unimportant role in the Belgian Revolution. He became a member of the revolutionary republican club, La Réunion Centrale. This club was intensely preoccupied with the preparation of the new state institutions. Toussaint took part in these debates twice, on 15 and 30 October 1830.His republican opinions were most evident on 15 October, when he rejected the hereditary monarchy, the institution of the Senate, and the royal veto.On 15 October he defended the “Flemish language, at a moment when all the discussions took place in French”. According to him, laws and decrees should also be translated into Flemish. He was supported in this by Lucien Jottrand (1804-1877) of Walloon Brabant. Toussaint lead a press campaign about this.This matter came up during the proceedings of the National Congress (10 November 1830-21 July 1831). On 27 November 1830, an amendment from the representative from Oudenaarde, Charles Liedts (1802-1878), was approved. It stipulated that all laws and decrees should be provided with a Flemish translation, “in the municipalities where Flemish is spoken”. In this sense, Toussaint is a forerunner of the Ghent group around Philip Blommaert (1808-1871), the first “language zealots” in the Flemish Movement.

Lease of the coastal dunes of the island of Texel from 1855 to 1885 In 1855, the province of North Holland started exploiting the coastal dunes of the island of Texel. The dunes were divided into 19 large plots, each of which was leased for several years. This map from around 1840 served as an official document till 1886 and was regularly updated. It shows the plots and lists of tenants and rents for each lease period. Also interventions such as the construction of ditches and dikes were drawn. The map uniquely shows the Mient (‘commons’), a low and moist dune landscape which was botanically very rich, but which was almost completely drained and forested around 1900. The present dune area of Texel still bears the traces of the lease and the interventions from the 19th century.

Abstract From Humanism to Nazism. The case of Frederik Jzn. Muller (1883-1944) Frederik Jzn. Muller (1883—1944) was professor of Latin at Leiden University from 1921 to 1944 and one of the few prominent Dutch classicists who collaborated with the German occupiers during the Second World War. The driving force behind Muller’s collaboration was not political opportunism or anti-Semitic ideology, but the conviction that only in a ‘Third Reich’ under German leadership could a new era of European culture dawn. With his belief in the close connection between cultural flourishing and state-building, Muller was a rare Dutch exponent of the intellectual movement known as the ‘third’ humanism, of which the German classicist Werner Jaeger (1888-1961) is commonly seen as the most typical representative. However, Frederik Muller’s views, much more so than Jaeger’s, expose the utterly paradoxical relationship between the ‘third’ humanism and the history of National Socialism.

L'homme se perd dans le monde des objets, et c'est a partir de son corps pris comme l'existant-type qu'il se retrouve et decouvre en meme temps que l'autre est comme le moi un sujet. Il ne s'agit pas d'une coexistence de sujets, mais de la creation d'une relation inter-subjective entre des etres. La rencontre et le le dialogue sont les moteurs d'une telle relation ; ils permettent de briser la coquille egocentrique ou le moi s'enferme et devient pour lui-meme un objet. Le moi des lors s'engage sur le chemin de l'etre. Le moi brise a besoin d'un toi pour etre vraiment, au sens marcelien de ce terme, c'est-a-dire un co-esse. L'amour et la fidelite alimentent la relation inter-subjective dans la presence et l'entiere disponibilite. Chez un etre fini, l'amour et la fidelite sont soumis a l'obstacle et conduits a l'echec, ils demandent un recours ultime qui ne peut venir de la volonte humaine creee, mais du toi absolu. C'est uniquement dans la priere et dans la foi que le rapport d'etre a etre est garanti. Et c7est ici, que la formule : j'espere en toi pour nous, prend tout son sens. Man is lost in the world of objects, and from his body he find and discover himself in the same time as the other is, like the ego, a subject. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: After 1880 more and more Jews (mostly of East European descent) moved into the rural areas of South Africa. Initially they travelled across the country as hawkers but later settled permanently in many of the smaller towns. In most cases they opened shops or started businesses of another kind. Due to the nature of their work the Jews mostly came into contact with the Afrikaans speaking community. Although these two groups differed considerably in many ways, especially as regards language and religion, the Jews adapted and integrated fairly quickly. They became involved with the Afrikaans speaking community in various ways and made a substantial contribution. Although their involvement in and contribution to the economy can be considered as the most important, they also played a considerable role in other areas such as politics, education, language, sport and recreation. The presence of the Jews in rural South Africa was important not only because of their integration with the Afrikaans speaking community and the contribution they made as a group, but also because of the extent to which the two groups influenced each other. Both groups were culturally enriched and the South African country town developed a unique character due to the presence or the Jews and their involvement in the life and activities of the townspeople. Although the Jews were influenced by the Afrikaans speaking community and thus acquired new cultural assets, they still to a large extent retained their Jewish identity. On the whole there was a very good relationship between the Afrikaans speaking rural population and the Jews. After 1950 an increasingly large number of Jews moved to the cities. The depopulation of the rural areas, as regards to Jews, took place to such an extent that today only a few Jewish families remain in rural areas.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Na 1880 is Jode (hoofsaaklik van Oos-Europese afkoms) toenemend op die Suid- Afrikaanse platteland aangetref. Aanvanklik het hulle as smouse die landelike gebiede deurkruis. Later het hulle hulle egter permanent op die plattelandse dorpe gevestig - in die meeste gevalle het hulle 'n winkel of ander soort besigheid begin. Die Jode het uit die aard van hulle werk oorwegend met die Afrikaanssprekende gemeenskap in aanraking gekom. Alhoewel daar definitiewe verskille tussen dié twee groepe was, veral ten opsigte van godsdiens en taal, het die Jode redelik gou aangepas en ingeskakel. Hulle het op verskillende terreine by die Afrikaanssprekende gemeenskap betrokke geraak en 'n substansiële bydrae gelewer. Hoewel hulle betrokkenheid en bydrae tot die ekonomiese terrein as die belangrikste beskou kan word, het hulle ook op baie ander gebiede soos byvoorbeeld politiek, opvoeding, taal, sport en ontspanning belangrike bydraes gelewer. Die Jode se teenwoordigheid op die Suid-Afrikaanse platteland was nie slegs belangrik as gevolg van hulle inskakeling by die Afrikaanssprekende gemeenskap of die bydrae wat hulle as groep gelewer het nie, maar ook as gevolg van die mate waarin albei groepe mekaar beïnvloed het. Die Jode se aanwesigheid en hulle betrokkenheid by die dorp se bedrywighede en mense het meegebring dat albei groepe kultureel verryk is en dat die Suid-Afrikaanse platteland 'n unieke karakter verkry het. Hoewel die Jode deur die Afrikaanssprekende gemeenskap beïnvloed is en hulle as groep nuwe kultuurgoedere bygekry het, het hulle steeds in 'n groot mate hulle Joodse identiteit behou. Daar was oor die algemeen 'n baie goeie verhouding tussen die Afrikaanssprekende plattelanders en die Jode. Na ongeveer 1950 het daar geleidelik 'n toenemende getal Jode na die stede verhuis. Die ontvolking van die platteland met betrekking tot die Jode het in so 'n mate plaasgevind dat daar vandag slegs enkele Joodse gesinne op die meeste plattelandse dorpe oor is.

A partir de l'ensemble des films de Tod Browning actuellement visibles, nous tentons de repérer, cerner et analyser certains des motifs, figures, procédures présidant au spectacle du corps. Après un préambule qui replace Tod Browning dans l'Hollywood des années dix à trente et plus largement dans l'histoire du cinéma, nous nous attachons à l'importance de la nomination dès le commencement du film (titre, générique, première phrases et premiers plans); puis, à la nature et à l'espace du spectacle diégénétique : quels sont les numéros présentés ? quels sont leurs enjeux ? Cela nous conduit aux coulisses du spectacle et au spectacle des coulisses, puis aux procédures d'encadrement comme rhétorique de l'avalement. Il s'agit des ouvertures et de leurs éléments - issus du décor (portes, fenêtres, rideaux. . . ), filmiques (ouvertures et fermetures au noir, mouvements de caméra. . . ), symboliques. . . - conçus comme frontières, lieux de passage et instruments de réduction des espaces. Le spectacle est le lieu de présentation d'un corps ce qui, chez Tod Browning, implique des procédures de nomination, une onomastique particulièrement significative et la mise au travail des problèmes de l'exhibition, car le spectacle présente notamment des corps monstrueux : ceux des malfaiteurs, médiums, phénomènes de foire, artistes. Le corps orchestre alors la mise en scène du spectacle, deux procédés plus particulièrement en attestent : le retournement et le travail du burlesque. Le spectacle est une recréation du monde, il fait donc maquette par rapport au social extérieur - notamment par le travail - et il est le lieu du tout possible, de la transgression des tabous - le corps apparaît alors comme un instrument de perversion et de subversion de l'ordre, il recourt à quelques moteurs (stimulants, érotisme et sexualité) - , du rêve, du merveilleux. Il intègre et véhicule des formes de symbolisations archai͏̈ques - l'animalité, les mythes -, tandis que les croyances religieuses et superstitieuses sont traitées tel un spectacle.

2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene, TNT, is an explosive used in munitions production that is known to cause both aplastic and hemolytic anemia in exposed workers. Deaths have been reported secondary to both varieties of anemia. Studies have shown that TNT systemic absorption is significant by both the respiratory and dermal routes. A literature review revealed that the most recent review article on TNT exposure arguing for a TWA drop from the PEL to the TLV was in 1977 -- this article cited anemia issues in addition to other untoward effects of TNT. No studies encountered looked at hemoglobin change or anemia cases in respiratory protected workers, this present effort may be the first. TNT PEL (1.5mg/m^3), REL (0.5mg/m^3), and TLV (0.1 mg/m^3) 8 hr TWAs all with skin notations (based on animal models and TNT urine metabolite extrapolation in TNT workers suggesting important role of skin absorption). The earliest effects of systemic TNT poisoning involve hgb and hematocrit drop. The investigator hypothesized that respiratory protection alone is insufficient to protect TNT workers from the risk of anemia development and hemoglobin concentration drop. A retrospective observational study design was incorporated utilizing a records review of TNT vapor air concentration values and worker Hgb values for 8 sets of workers in respiratory protection at a demilitarization operation from October 2006 to April 2007 in order to observe whether or not respiratory protection provided adequate protection against anemia development and hemoglobin change; and to help characterize the probable role of TNT skin absorption on hemoglobin change and anemia risk. Worker baseline hgbs were compared with their exposure hgbs for statistically significant hgb concentration changes (two-tailed paired t-tests), and anemia cases were recorded. Mean hgb changes within each of the 8 groups of workers were then regressed on mean TNT air concentrations (10 hr TWAs) using air sampling levels that were performed closest in time to exposure hgbs. Statistically significant hgb concentration drops and anemia cases were apparent at values about the REL and PEL in respiratory protected workers. There were no anemia cases or statistically significant hgb drops at values about the TLV, however. For mean TNT air concentrations from 0.12/m 3 to 0.31/m 3 there was strong positive linear association with regard to magnitude of hgb change (r=0.996). The results appear to confirm the necessity of the skin notation for TNT. However, the TLV seems to be protective against the possibility of anemia risk principally by the dermal route in workers who are respiratory protected. A question does still remain, however, as to anemia risk in workers who are below the TLV who may not be using respiratory protection. The absence of a continued linear association between mean TNT air concentrations and mean hgb change above the 0.31 mg/m 3 TNT level most likely reflects a marrow response, as the TNT levels evident in the study are reported to be mainly associated with extravascular hemolysis with a minimal, or non-existent, aplastic component assumed. This study adds evidence to the argument that the TLV should be adopted as the new PEL.

Established stars and stock players might desert the sweltering city for cooler haunts at the seashore or in the mountains, but managers continued to keep theatres open and more or less profitable, attempting to lure determined entertainment seekers with promises of icecooled air (barely perceptible), with mountings of plays deemed too uncertain for the height of the season, and with up-and-coming players anxious for a better chance in the limelight. As often as not, this was the time when newer American plays were given an opportunity. Actually, though many contemporary commentators failed to grasp the fact, important young American playwrights were coming increasingly to the fore. By now Steele MacKaye and Bronson Howard were well established, but James A. Herne, Augustus Thomas, William Gillette, Henry C. de Mille, and David Belasco also were carving out enduring niches for themselves. Gillette again had shown his mettle at the close of the previous season. De Mille and Belasco had a new play ready to launch the coming one.

Some companies seek ISO 9000 registration for competitive reasons or because customers require it. PETRONAS Gas Bhd, pipeline division company TOD or Transmission Operations Division, seek ISO 9000 registrations purely for the benefits since the management believes that a well designed and well implemented quality system has a process which tends to be lean, sensitive to customers needs, highly reactive and efficient. This paper informs how TOD sets out to put ISO 9002 international quality system to work in its operations. A Quality Steering Council was formed in Feb. 1994 and the HSE and Quality Management Manager was appointed as management representative. The current working system was first assessed. Next, an implementation plan was prepared. Training was provided and the quality manual prepared followed by all the necessary work procedures and instructions. Finally there was trial implementation and actual “live” implementation. In January 1995 TOD ISO 9002 registration was approved.

The concept of "leniency" in competition law, or better known as the "leniency programme", has proven to be an extremely important instrument in fighting unfair competition. In the Republic of Northern Macedonia (hereinafter RNM), this concept of suppressing or reducing unfair competition, more or less, exists solely as a law conception. Nowadays, when the EU discusses the impact of the global crisis and the Coronavirus pandemic on the level of utilization of ”leniency programme", this concept is still unknown or not a well-known concept for business sector in RNM. The main focus of this article is “leniency programme” in RNM. The key questions that we aim to answer here, are: whether and to what extent this instrument is predicted in Macedonian competition law? Is it predicted only as a law category, or it has practical implications too? Although this research refers to RNM, we strongly believe that a thorough study of “leniency” requires exploration of European conception of “leniency” too. For that purpose, we use relevant EU legislation, as well as practice. Thus, our main goal is to consider the position of RNM towards “leniency” and bring into relation to the Macedonian competition law. We base our hypothetical framework on the assumption that the applicability of “leniency programme” in RNM is at the lowest level. Furthermore, that the undertakings are not interested in applying “leniency”. This situation is partly due to the lack of information, the complexity of the application procedure, as well as other factors that are related not only to the attitude of the executive of undertakings, but more to the general economic circumstances, economic development, the market size of goods and services, etc. Using the analytical-descriptive method, the comparative method, and the method of analysis and synthesis, we’ll elaborate the situation in RNM regarding this issue, and we will present our views considering the questions: whether certain measures should be taken regarding „leniency program“, and what should be done to boost the use of this program in the Macedonian business sector.

Abstract Three-dimensional cylindrical and wall-like structures of copper, Ti-6Al-4V, aluminum, and stainless steel 304 were fabricated by melting the powders of these materials with a CO2 laser beam. A vapor-plasma plume is generated at the top of the melt layer. The emission spectra of the plume were recorded using an optical multichannel analyzer, and the plume temperatures are determined to be in the range of 4920 K to 6720 K. A one-dimensional model is developed to calculate the plume temperature, deposition geometry and melt pool characteristics. The model accounts for the transmission of the laser beam through the plume, energy transfer in the molten phase and the phase changes at the solid-liquid and liquid-vapor interfaces. The surface temperature at the molten surface is found to exceed the normal boiling temperature causing the pressure to be higher than one atmospheric pressure. The calculated plume temperatures are in good agreement with the values obtained from the spectral data. Also, the model predictions for remelt layer depth, deposition height and plasma height compare well with experimental data.

Abstract This paper covers the generic procedure for the creation and usage of a complete system simulation for propulsion systems of ships with focus on complex hybrid systems. Due to the large number of available components and challenging operational profiles, there is no longer a single best solution, especially in specialized shipbuilding. On top of that even minor changes in the propulsion system can have a substantial impact on plant performance and vessel behavior. Thus, the early design stage is crucial. The design procedure usually incorporates the selection and dimensioning of available components and concepts. Once this has been done, the dynamic behavior can be analyzed using the developed system simulation environment. With the knowledge gained the needed alterations in the concept can be identified and implemented in the subsequent design iteration circle. Based on the example of an offshore anchor handling vessel, the integration potential of a hybrid propulsion system is examined and evaluated according to the aforementioned procedure. The applied tool is a system simulation environment developed in the Department of Marine Engineering, consisting of a distributed co-simulation of the existing ship design environment E4 and Matlab® Simulink®.

Abstract An operator had a need to cement a 13⅜-in. casing to act as a secondary barrier against a reservoir with the top of cement 100 m above a sand formation. In a subsequent section, the operator required installing and cementing a 9⅝-in. liner as the primary barrier element prior to drilling into the reservoir and placing the top of cement up to the 13 ⅜-in. casing shoe. The operation required placing a minimum 30 m of isolating cement in the cemented interval, where verification of the barrier was to be obtained by using logging tools. To comprehend the operating environment the cement would experience, it was necessary to determine an optimal cement system for the anticipated pressure and temperature cycles in the well. The service company performed a cement integrity evaluation using specialized cement sheath stress analysis software. The simulation software determined which cement system was best suited for exposure to the anticipated pressure and temperature cycles during injection and production. Based on the simulation results, the operator decided to use an environmentally compliant flexible (ECF) cement system. This novel system also significantly reduced the CO2 emissions (CO2e) footprint vs. conventional cement. The operator drilled the 17½-in. open hole to 1888 m measured depth (MD) without any issues using a proprietary flat rheology drilling fluid system. A total of 18.9 m3 of 1.60 specific gravity (SG) ECF cement slurry was pumped. During displacement, no losses were observed as the spacer entered the annulus, and consistent lift pressure was observed as the cement entered the annulus. The job signature pressure match conducted using proprietary zonal isolation software indicated that the openhole size was near gauge hole. The 12¼-in. open hole was drilled, and the 9⅝-in. liner was successfully run to total depth without incident. A total of 16.1 m3 of 1.60 SG ECF cement slurry was pumped. No losses were observed during the cementing operation, and consistent lift pressure was recorded during displacement. The liner was logged using ultrasonic imaging tools, with the top-of-cement bond identified at the 13⅜-in. casing shoe with a total 248 m of isolating cement. The operation achieved the required isolation to install the cemented liner as the primary barrier element prior to drilling into the reservoir, in addition to the exceptional logging results. The ECF cement system provided outstanding bond quality from 1882 to 2130 m. Remarkably, as an energy transition technology when compared with a conventional foamed cement system, the ECF cement system reduced CO2 emissions by 44% and simplified the operation by eliminating the use of foamed cement. Furthermore, the ECF cement is environmentally rated as PLONOR (poses little or no risk) and eliminates the use of polymeric materials to impart flexibility.

The goal of pipeline integrity management is to reduce risks associated with pipeline failures to the lowest level possible within given budgetary constraints. A traditional method of deciding where to allocate resources most effectively begins with the assessment of risks for all pipelines within the system. The pipelines are then ranked in order of risk to decide which pipelines should be given attention first. This “worst-first” approach has many benefits but it requires a large quantity of accurate data to rank the pipelines in the correct order, and it does not readily reveal the integrity maintenance activities that are required first by the pipelines at the top of the list. A new approach is presented that focuses on prioritizing integrity management activities rather than ranking pipelines. This is more straightforward because it is only the activities that can be directly controlled by integrity managers. The new approach also involves a change in purpose. Instead of assessing risks to find the “worst” pipelines, the new approach helps integrity managers to design a well-balanced program with uniform system-wide integrity. System-wide rules are used that consider pipeline systems as a collection of many different integrity components such as pipe walls, pipe coatings, cathodic protection systems, chemical inhibition systems, signs, and fences rather than a collection of pipelines. Each different integrity component has its own specialized inspection, maintenance and repair activities that keep it in good operating condition. The new method schedules these integrity activities for each individual component of each pipeline in the system. It also provides a practical way to minimize the amount of data that is required to successfully administer the integrity program. After integrity activities have been scheduled and implemented, the new approach can be used to manage them effectively. A new concept of exposure rather than risk is proposed. It provides clear and measurable statement of goals for integrity management. It is useful for prioritizing activities and for deciding which projects can be postponed in order to stay within budgetary limitations.

Differences of opinion concerning the relationship between the Thelon tectonic zone and the Taltson magmatic zone, as to whether they are individual tectonic elements or two independent elements, have generated various plate tectonic models explaining their creation. Magnetic and gravity signatures indicate that they are separate entities and that the Thelon tectonic zone and the Great Slave Lake shear zone form a single element. Adopting the single-element concept and available age dates, a temporally evolving plate tectonic model of Slave-Rae interaction is presented. At 2350 Ma, an Archean supercontinent rifted along the eastern and southern margins of the Slave Craton. Subsequent ocean closure, apparently diachronous, began with subduction at 2070 Ma in the northern Thelon tectonic zone, followed by subduction under the Great Slave Lake shear zone at 2051 Ma. Subduction related to closure of an ocean between the Buffalo Head terrane and the Rae Craton initiated under the Taltson magmatic zone at 1986 Ma, at which time subduction continued along the Thelon tectonic zone. At 1970 Ma, collision in the northern Thelon tectonic zone is evidenced in the Kilohigok Basin. From 1957 to 1920 Ma, plutonism was active in the Taltson magmatic zone, Great Slave Lake shear zone, and southern Thelon tectonic zone. The plutonism terminated in the northern Thelon tectonic zone at 1950 Ma, but it resumed at 1910 Ma and continued until 1880 Ma. The East Arm Basin witnessed igneous activity as early as 2046 Ma, though this took place more continuously from 1928 to 1861 Ma; some igneous rocks bear subduction-related trace element signatures. These signatures, and the presence of northwest-verging nappes, may signify collision with the Great Slave Lake shear zone as a result of southeastward subduction, completing closure between the Slave and Rae cratons.

The Shia Hazaras in Pakistan are one of the most persecuted religious minorities. According to a 2019 report produced by the National Commission for Human Rights, a government formed commission, at least 509 Hazaras have been killed since 2013 (NCHR 2018: 2). According to one of the Vice Chairs of the Human Rights Commission Pakistan, the country's leading human rights watchdog, between 2009 and 2014, nearly 1,000 Hazaras were killed in sectarian violence (Butt 2014). The present population of Shia Hazaras is the result of three historical migrations from Afghanistan (Hashmi 2016: 2). The first phase of migration occurred in 1880 1901 when Abd al Rahman Khan came to power in 1880 in Afghanistan and declared war against the Hazaras as a result of a series of revolts they made against the regime.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community (AMC, or Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at) believe themselves to be Muslims. The AMC was founded by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad in 1889 as a revival movement within Islam. Unlike all other sects of Islam, they believe that Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835–1908) of Qadian (a small town in Gurdaspur district of Punjab, India) is the same promised Messiah who was prophesied by the prophet Muhammad. Other sects believe that the promised Messiah is yet to come and, therefore, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad is a false prophet and his followers are non-Muslims.

Havsfiskelaboratoriets trålexpeditioner i Västerhavet (Skagerrak och Kattegatt) genomförs två gånger årligen, i kvartal 1 och 3. Fisket utförs med den franska bottentrålen GOV. Under expeditionen gjordes totalt 46 giltiga tråldrag i hela området, 22 i Skagerrak och 19 i Kattegatt samt fem i östliga Nordsjön. Fångsten utgjordes av 18,1 ton sill, 6 ton skarpsill, 5 ton kolja och 275 kg torsk, inalles 57 fiskarter med en totalfångst av 35,6 ton. Biologiska parametrar på individnivå samlas in på sill- och torskfiskar samt några plattfiskar. Totalt provtogs 3 343 individer från 11 olika målarter med avseende på ålder och könsmognad. Torsk-index i både Skagerrak och Kattegatt har minskat kraftigt. Ettårig kolja uppvisar en relativt god förekomst i Skagerrak till följd av förra årets starka rekrytering men årets rekrytering är svag. Sillen visar en stor 1-grupp i både Skagerrak och Kattegatt.

In the state-based insurance regulatory system, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) develops model laws that create a framework for uniform standards. This uniformity among states is beneficial to insurers, especially those operating in multiple states. Since the first NAIC meeting in 1871, the NAIC has issued over 200 model laws. Though NAIC model laws have existed for decades, little attention has been paid to understanding how they spread from the NAIC to states and from states to states. This spread is a policy diffusion process, which refers to the external factors that impact states’ policy adoption. In this project, we study the general pattern in the diffusion process and key factors that affect states’ decisions to implement NAIC model laws. We aim to answer the following questions: Do the NAIC or early-adopting states exert greater influence on leading states to adopt model laws? Are there common factors that may explain state legislatures’ adoption of model laws?

Robert Duncan Milne (1844-99), from Cupar, Fife, was a pioneering author of science fiction stories, most of which appeared in San Francisco’s Argonaut magazine in the 1880s and ’90s. SF historian Sam Moskowitz credits Milne with being the first full-time SF writer, and his contribution to the genre is arguably greater than anyone else including Stevenson and Conan Doyle, yet it has all but disappeared into oblivion. Milne was fascinated by science. He drew on the work of Scottish physicists and inventors such as James Clark Maxwell and Alexander Graham Bell into the possibilities of electromagnetic forces and new communications media to overcome distances in space and time. Milne wrote about visual time-travelling long before H.G. Wells. He foresaw virtual ‘tele-presencing’, remote surveillance, mobile phones and worldwide satellite communications – not to mention climate change, scientific terrorism and drone warfare, cryogenics and molecular reengineering. Milne also wrote on alien life forms, artificial immortality, identity theft and personality exchange, lost worlds and the rediscovery of extinct species. ‘A New Palingenesis’, originally published in The Argonaut on July 7th 1883, and adapted in this comic, is a secular version of the resurrection myth. Mary Shelley was the first scientiser of the occult to rework the supernatural idea of reanimating the dead through the mysterious powers of electricity in Frankenstein (1818). In Milne’s story, in which Doctor S- dissolves his terminally ill wife’s body in order to bring her back to life in restored health, is a striking, further modernisation of Frankenstein, to reflect late-nineteenth century interest in electromagnetic science and spiritualism. In particular, it is a retelling of Shelley’s narrative strand about Frankenstein’s aborted attempt to shape a female mate for his creature, but also his misogynistic ambition to bypass the sexual principle in reproducing life altogether. By doing so, Milne interfused Shelley’s updating of the Promethean myth with others. ‘A New Palingenesis’ is also a version of Pygmalion and his male-ordered, wish-fulfilling desire to animate his idealised female sculpture, Galatea from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, perhaps giving a positive twist to Orpheus’s attempt to bring his corpse-bride Eurydice back from the underworld as well? With its basis in spiritualist ideas about the soul as a kind of electrical intelligence, detachable from the body but a material entity nonetheless, Doctor S- treats his wife as an ‘intelligent battery’. He is thus able to preserve her personality after death and renew her body simultaneously because that captured electrical intelligence also carries a DNA-like code for rebuilding the individual organism itself from its chemical constituents. The descriptions of the experiment and the body’s gradual re-materialisation are among Milne’s most visually impressive, anticipating the X-raylike anatomisation and reversal of Griffin’s disappearance process in Wells’s The Invisible Man (1897). In the context of the 1880s, it must have been a compelling scientisation of the paranormal, combining highly technical descriptions of the Doctor’s system of electrically linked glass coffins with ghostly imagery. It is both dramatic and highly visual, even cinematic in its descriptions, and is here brought to life in the form of a comic.

Bank caving rates and associated total sediment supply were calculated along the Lower Mississippi River from Cairo, IL, to Baton Rouge, LA, using historical maps between 1765 and 1992. Comparison of these maps reveals that the added sediment loads from bank erosion have greatly declined through time. During the Pre-cutoff period (1765–1931), the cumulative sediment supply from bank caving between Cairo, IL, and Baton Rouge, LA, ranged from about 395 million cubic yards/year (MCY/yr) to 535 MCY/yr with a median value of approximately 470 MCY/yr. The 1880-1931 period had the highest rate of sediment supply from bank caving with a median value of approximately 610 MCY/yr. By the 1990s, the sediment supply from bank erosion was essentially eliminated as a result of the revetment program, with significant erosion being observed at only a few locations, totaling approximately 17 MCY/yr. This equates to approximately a 96% reduction in the amount of total sediment being supplied to the channel system from bank erosion.

Natural resource management at Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield (NB) is guided by our understanding of the woodlands and prairies at the time of the Civil War battle in 1861. This report is focused on the Manley Woods unit of the park. This unit is an oak-hickory woodland in the Springfield Plain subsection of the Ozarks. Canopy closure for Missouri oak woodlands can be highly variable and ranges from 30–100% across the spectrum of savanna, open woodland, and closed woodland types. In 1861, the woodland was likely a savanna community. Changes in land use (e.g., fire exclusion) caused an increase in tree density in woodlands at Wilson’s Creek NB and across the Ozarks. Savannas and open woodlands transitioned to closed canopy woodlands over time. Park management plans include restoring the area to a savanna/open woodland structure. Prescribed fire was reintroduced to Wilson’s Creek NB in 1988 and continues as the primary mechanism for reducing the tree canopy. The Manley Woods unit of Wilson’s Creek NB has been subject to intense natural and anthropogenic disturbance events such as a tornado in 2003, timber removal in 2005, prescribed fires in 2006, 2009, and 2019, an ice storm in 2007, and periodic drought. The Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network (hereafter, Heartland Network) installed four permanent monitoring sites within the Manley Woods area of the park in 1997. Initially, we assessed ground flora and regeneration within the sites (1998–1999). We added fuel sampling after the 2003 tornado. Although overstory sampling occurred prior to the tornado, the protocol was not yet stabilized and pre-2003 overstory data were not included in these analyses. In this report, we focus on the overstory, tree regeneration, and ground cover metrics; ground flora data will be assessed in future analyses. Heartland Network monitoring data reveal that Manley Woods has undergone substantial change in canopy cover and midstory trees since 1998. While basal area and density metrics classify Manley Woods as an open woodland, the closed canopy of the midstory and overstory reveal a plant community that is moving toward closed woodland or forest structure. The most recent fire in 2019 was patchy and mild, resulting in continued increases in fuels. Ground cover metrics indicate infrequent disturbance since leaf litter continued to increase. Management objectives to restore savanna or woodland composition and structure to the Manley Woods overstory, regeneration layer, and ground cover will require implementation of prescribed fire in the future. Repeated fires can thin midstory trees and limit less fire tolerant early seral species. Additionally, mechanical or chemical treatments to reduce undesirable tree species should be considered for woodland restoration. Decreasing canopy closure is an important and essential step toward the restoration of a functioning savanna/open woodland plant community in Manley Woods. Treatments that thin the midstory and reduce fuel loading will also benefit these plant communities. With the anticipated changing climate, maintaining an open woodland community type may also provide resilience through management for native species tolerant of increasingly warmer temperatures.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Economic Research Service (ERS) International Macroeconomic Data Set provides historical and 10-year projected macroeconomic variables for 181 countries, as well as regional and income groupings, which account for more than 99 percent of the world economy. The main macroeconomic variables include the real Gross Domestic Product (real GDP), Consumer Price Index (CPI), exchange rates, and population. These indicators are the benchmark for the annual USDA Baseline agricultural supply and demand projections, providing a 10-year outlook on U.S. and global agricultural variables. These projections also relay information on the overall health of international economies in the near future to the USDA, its stakeholders, and a variety of policymakers and market participants. These projections were completed in August 2023 based on data and expectations at that time. This report details the macroeconomic projections from 2023 to 2033. To help users interpret the projection numbers, this report also provides the state of the global economy and an analysis of the influence of events over the past year in various regions and countries.
