Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Motivation The progress of High Throughput Sequencing (HTS) technologies and the reduction in the sequencing costs are such that Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) could replace many traditional laboratory assays and procedures. Exploiting the volume of data produced by HTS platforms requires substantial computing skills and this is the main bottleneck in the implementation of WGS as a routine laboratory technique. The way in which the vast amount of results are presented to researchers and clinicians with no specialist knowledge of genome sequencing is also a significant issue. Results Here we present TORMES, a user-friendly pipeline for WGS analysis of bacteria from any origin generated by HTS on Illumina platforms. TORMES is designed for non-bioinformatician users, and automates the steps required for WGS analysis directly from the raw sequence data: sequence quality filtering, de novo assembly, draft genome ordering against a reference, genome annotation, multi-locus sequence typing (MLST), searching for antibiotic resistance and virulence genes, and pangenome comparisons. Once the analysis is finished, TORMES generates and interactive web-like report that can be opened in any web browser and shared and revised by researchers in a simple manner. TORMES can be run by using very simple commands and represent a quick an easy way to perform WGS analysis. Availability and implementation TORMES is free available at https://github.com/nmquijada/tormes. Supplementary information Supplementary data are available at Bioinformatics online.

Abstract (sommario):
A instrução aumentou a atividade eletromiográfica somente do músculo serrátil anterior durante os exercícios isométricos (Inferior Glide e Isometric Low Row).
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the instruction for conscious contraction of the abdominal muscles on the scapulothoracic muscles activation during shoulder exercises. Methods: Sixty healthy male and female subjects (mean age 23.5 ± 3 years) volunteered for this study. Five exercises focusing on the serratus anterior muscle were assessed before and after standardized verbal, and tactile feedback applied to encourage abdominal muscle contraction. Repeated measures ANOVA and Bonferroni post-hoc test were used to compare normalized EMG amplitudes. Moderate and large magnitudes of effect size were considered indicators of the practical significance of our findings. Results: Conscious contraction of the abdominal muscles resulted in significant increase (p<.05) in serratus anterior, upper, middle and lower trapezius EMG amplitude, during dynamic exercises (Wall Slide, Wall Press, and Knee Push). Instruction increased EMG amplitude only for serratus anterior muscle during isometric exercises (Inferior Glide and Isometric Low Row). Conclusion: Conscious activation of the abdominal muscles, encouraged by verbal and tactile feedback was effective to increase the activation of periscapular muscles during shoulder exercises, in particular, the serratus anterior with large and moderate magnitudes of effect size.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The point of departure for this chapter is the large group of antique ideal sculptures that have been altered by Roman restorers active during the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. The most important additions were heads, and they had one main purpose: to transform an antique torso into a statue appearing more or less complete which, consequently, could be sold at a high price. The discussion concentrates on those sculptures whose restorations were executed with such skill that not only did the buyer, but also past and present-day scholars, believe them to be ancient works,. These scholars have published work based, apparently, on a mistaken judgment of the state of preservation of certain statues. The ambivalent role of post-antique restorations is best illustrated by a colossal marble statue of Hercules which was provided with a new head in the sixteenth century, and also with an inscription attributing the torso/statue to one of the most famous sculptors ever, Lysippos.

Abstract (sommario):
The first product of the project presented here was a prototype of video games, named IKeWYSE, which constituted the data collection tool for the experimental research project. The videogame prototype realized requires the user to navigate in a three-dimensional space through an avatar. User deals with three different tasks, two of which are designed to measure the skills of perspective taking, while the third task is calibrated on the ability of mental rotation. The default point of view is a semi-subjective view with the camera following the avatar. The player has the option to select other views, going through semi-subjective, subjective and objective point of view. The game was tested between January and March 2015, with a group of 70 children, 35 males and 35 females, from the third, fourth and fifth primary school class and from a first secondary school class of the Istituto Comprensivo San Valentino Torio, in the province of Salerno. Each user performs 10 attempts for each task. The software records the beginning of each game, the user data (age and gender), and, during the game, time for each attempt and the result (success / failure) of the attempt. The present chapter presents the research design, the path for design and development of the videogame, the methods for data collection and discusses the results obtained.

Abstract (sommario):
A computational model for simulating sound propagation in the lungs and torso is being developed and evaluated. A theoretical model for sound propagation in the airways is coupled with an acoustic boundary element (BE) model for sound propagation in the lung parenchyma and a finite element (FE) model for sound propagation in the surrounding chest wall. Models are being validated theoretically and numerically and compared with experimental studies, including: lung-chest phantom models that simulate the lung pathology of pneumothorax; and normal human subject studies. This work is relevant to the development of advanced auscultatory techniques for lung, vascular and cardiac sounds within the torso and may be useful in the development of a more effective educational tool for teaching stethoscopic skills in the future.

Abstract (sommario):
As the world of competitive sports increasingly embraces data-driven techniques, our research explores the potential of machine learning in distinguishing elite from semi-elite beach volleyball players. This study is motivated by the need to understand the subtle yet crucial differences in player movements that contribute to high-level performance in beach volleyball. Utilizing advanced machine learning techniques, we analyzed specific movement patterns of the motion of the torso during spikes, captured through vest-mounted accelerometers. Our approach offers novel insights into the nuanced dynamics of elite play, revealing that certain movement patterns are distinctly characteristic of higher skill levels. One of our key contributions is the ability to classify spiking movements at different skill levels with an accuracy rate as high as 87%. This current research provides a foundation of what separates elite players from their semi-elite counterparts.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) of robotics is a skill-oriented degree, and the students are usually not well-prepared both in theoretical knowledge and the opportunities to reach cutting-edge technologies. To overcome the above two difficulties, some challengeable projects are designed as the undergraduate projects of B.Tech of robotics. Among them, a SLAM robot spider is implemented. This project employed robotics vision, PID control, dynamics, kinematics, and additive manufacturing. Its structure is fabricated through additive manufacturing. The skeleton is composed of three main parts: six legs, torso, and head. Each leg has three joints which are driven by servo motors. The torso is used to mount the sensors, control modules, communication modules, and power source. The ‘NVIDIA Jetson Nano’ is used to control the motors, manage the communication interfaces, and process the sensing data. The ‘Intel RealSense depth camera’ and ’Intel RealSense tracking camera’ are used to futile the task of SLAM. The depth camera is used to acquire depth data to generate 3D point clouds. The tracking camera is an auxiliary reference to help to steer and to locate the position. Besides, an iPad tablet is used to provide a manual control option and render the scene in real-time.

Abstract (sommario):
Golfers must hone the sequence of the golf swing for consistent and efficient results, where a good golf shot is both precise and accurate. It takes countless hours of practice to develop the skill, and methods such as video feedback and coaching serve as aids to the process. However, few methods outside of visual observations exist to identify factors in the swing that cause a poor shot. Most golf analysis equipment is expensive and requires extensive setup time. Some systems only measure the physics of the ball and are limited to the practice range, whereas wearable sensors for golf are limited to specific motions such as the wrist. To address these challenges, a fabric-based, on-body sensor was developed and investigated to assess biomechanical movements during the swing. The wearable sensor, herein referred to as Motion Tape (MT), is a low-profile, disposable, self-adhesive, skin-strain sensor formed by spray-coating piezoresistive graphene nanocomposites directly onto kinesiology tape (K-tape). The objective of this study is to use MT to identify key movements in the swing sequence at four body locations: wrist, flexor carpi, anterior deltoid, and torso. First, MT sensors were fabricated for testing. Second, a human subject test protocol recording the golf swing of an experienced golfer was designed and conducted with participants wearing four MT sensors at the aforementioned locations. Last, the test data were processed, and the results showed that MT was able to identify unique movements during the swing. The MT data was analyzed using machine learning algorithms to identify movement abnormalities associated with poor swings. This allows for analysis of swing tempo for direct feedback to the golfer for improved performance.

Abstract (sommario):
BackgroundBystanders often hesitate when rendering first aid to females, particularly it requires disrobing the individual (Leary et al, 2018). In addition to the delayed application of first aid, the lifesaver’s actual task performance may also be less effective than when treating injured males. This can occur, for example, when the lifesaver does not fully expose the wound (Bell et al., 2020). The Army has invested heavily in the acquisition of realistic patient manikins for training combat medicine skills. However, given logistical constraints, it will be difficult to acquire an equal number of female patient manikins. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop and test a low-cost manikin “Gender Retrofit Kit” (GRK). The GRK included a breast “vest” that is affixed to the torso, a realistic vagina that is affixed to the groin, a wig, facial makeup, and instructions for “feminizing” the manikin’s appearance. MethodWe recruited a convenience sample of 36 Combat Lifesavers and Combat Medics who were completing their recurrent annual training. At the end of their scheduled training, the participants were invited to practice three medical procedures (treatment of penetrating trauma to the leg via tourniquet, treatment of gunshot wound via application of a chest seal, and treatment of tension pneumothorax via needle chest decompression). Of the three medical procedures, only the last two required disrobing the patient. Therefore, we hypothesized that if performance issues were to occur, they would be localized here. The participants practiced the three procedures using two different manikin types: a standard male manikin and the GRK-outfitted manikin. The order of manikin presentation was counterbalanced. Measures of task quality, task completion times, and usability questionnaires were collected. Results and ConclusionsThe sample was primarily male (78%), and included nearly equal numbers of Combat Lifesavers (42%) and Combat Medics (44%). A post-simulation questionnaire suggested no significant mean differences between the standard vs. GRK manikins with regard to the simulators’ perceived realism, anatomical correctness, or ability to provide meaningful skills practice. However, statistically higher mean scores were reported for questionnaire items that focused on the female manikin’s realistic breast tissue, realistic skin texture, and feminine facial appearance. Linear mixed models were used to separately test the effects of participant gender (or job title), manikin gender, and their interaction on both task performance speed and quality. There were no statistically significant differences in task completion order or speed of task completion. All participants performed the three tasks in accordance with the Army’s MARCH-E algorithm, and all had similar completion times. With regard to the quality of task performance, the analyses revealed only one statistically significant main effect of manikin gender: the GRK manikin had a lower mean task performance score for the treatment of gunshot wounds, which required disrobing the patient to apply the chest seal. Based on the results of this exploratory study, we are prioritizing potential improvements to the GRK, and are planning a more rigorously-controlled validation study with the revised prototype. Additional implications and lessons learned will be discussed.
