Abstract (sommario):
The taxonomic structure of the Therates fruhstorferi species complex (sensu lato) within the batesi-species group is revised. The lectotypes and paralectotypes of Therates fruhstorferi W. Horn, 1902 and Therates fruhstorferi sauteri W. Horn, 1912 are designated. Therates biserratus Tan, Mo, Liang, 1991 and T. vitalisi ida Mandl, 1954 are restored from the synonyms of T. vitalisi W. Horn, 1913 as the separate species and subspecies, respectively while T. sauteri is considered as a separate species, but not as a subspecies of T. fruhstorferi. Three species and two subspecies are described as new: T. fruhstorferi australis ssp. n.—from southern Vietnam; T. pseudovitalisi sp. n.—from northern Laos; T. pseudovitalisi tibetana ssp. n.—from eastern Tibet, China; T. hunanensis sp. n.—from the Chinese Province Hunan; T. ziyardamensis sp. n.—from northern Myanmar. An identification key and distribution map of the species of Therates fruhstorferi complex are provided.

Abstract (sommario):
e14297 Background: The induction of powerful CD8+ T cell immunity to tumor associated self-antigens (TAAs) represents a critical yet challenging goal. Here we report on the development of an arenavirus-based delivery platform meeting this challenge. Previously we have shown that genetically engineered replication-attenuated lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) vectors, TheraT(LCMV), induce strong TAA-specific CD8 T cell immunity, but these responses can not be substantially augmented upon TheraT(LCMV) readministration. Counter to expectations, vector-neutralizing antibodies were not accountable for limited homologous prime-boosting capacity. Instead, dominant viral backbone-reactive CD8+ T cells competed against subdominant TAA-specific responses, limiting their magnitude. Methods: Herein we engineered and characterized delivery systems based on the arenaviruses Mopeia, Candid#1 and Pichinde (TheraT(MOP), TheraT(CAND), TheraT(PIC)). Results: We demonstrate that heterologous TheraT(CAND) – TheraT(LCMV) and TheraT(PIC)-TheraT(LCMV) prime-boost substantially augment TAA-specific CD8 T cell responses by rendering them immunodominant. Accordingly, intravenous administration of mice triggered up to 50% TAA epitope-specific CD8+ T cells and cured established tumors. Conversely, TheraT(MOP) – TheraT(LCMV) prime-boost was poorly immunogenic owing to cross-reactive T cell epitopes in the respective viral backbones. Conclusions: These findings establish heterologous arenavirus prime-boost combinations as a powerful new modality in tumor immunotherapy and highlight CD8 T cell epitope dominance as a significant hurdle to overcome in the vectored delivery of TAAs.

Abstract (sommario):
Bonding to zirconia presents a great challenge, as the clinical guidelines for predictable adhesion are not sufficiently validated. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of various bonding methodologies of various resin cements on zirconia, using different aging protocols. Manufactured zirconia specimens (N = 300 and n = 20 per group) were randomly assigned to three luting protocols: 1—in mould incremental build up; 2—in mould incremental build up with mould removal; 3—in mould non-incremental bulk build up. Five dual, photo- and chemical-cure resin cements were used, namely, Variolink Esthetic (Ivoclar), Tetric (Ivoclar), Panavia (Kuraray), TheraCem (Bisco), and RelyX UniCem (3M ESPE), and were applied on primed zirconia using photopolymerization protocols. Thereafter, the specimens were subjected to the following three ageing methods: 1—dry; 2—thermocycling (×5000; 5–55 °C); 3—3–6 months of water storage. Using a universal testing machine, the specimens were loaded under shear, at 1 mm/min crosshead speed. An analysis of the data was performed using three-way ANOVA and the Bonferroni method. The moulding type, ageing and luting cement significantly affected the results (p < 0.05). Among all the protocols under dry conditions, TheraCem (16 ± 3; 11 ± 1; 16 ± 3) showed the best bond strength, while, after thermocycling, TheraCem (7 ± 2) and Tetric (7 ± 2) performed the best with Protocol 1. In Protocol 2, RelyX (7 ± 3) presented the highest result, followed by TheraCem (5 ± 3) and Tetric (5 ± 1) (p < 0.05). Using Protocol 3, RelyX (10 ± 6) showed the highest result, followed by TheraCem (7 ± 2) and Panavia21 (7 ± 2) (p < 0.05). Six months after water storage, TheraCem presented the highest result (10 ± 2) in Protocol 1, while, in Protocols 2 and 3, Tetric (10 ± 2; 15 ± 5) presented the highest result, followed by TheraCem (6 ± 2; 8 ± 3). Adhesion tests using the incremental or bulk method, using moulds, showed the highest results, but removing the mould, and the subsequent ageing, caused a decrease in the adhesion of the resin cements tested on zirconia, probably due to water absorption, with the exclusion of Tetric.

Abstract (sommario):
Considering the large area of the Indian subcontinent, its known millipede diversity is sparse with only ca. 270 described species in 90 genera, 25 families and 11 orders. So far, not a single polyzoniidan millipede has been described from India. The order Polyzoniida Cook, 1895 is one of the most species-poor millipede groups with less than 80 described species, and includes taxonomically problematic groups, especially in the family Siphonotidae Cook, 1895. Here we report the first representatives of the order Polyzoniida from India, and describe the new genus Theratta n. gen., with the three species Theratta mannavan n. sp., Theratta eravikulam n. sp., and Theratta shola n. sp., using scanning electron microscopy and COI genetic barcoding. Based on the morphological characters we place Theratta n. gen., and the three new species in the tribe Rhinotini Hoffman, 1977 of the family Siphonotidae. The gonopods of the new genus are similar to those of the genus Rhinotus Cook, 1896, but differ from all other Rhinotini in the modification of the podomere II of the anterior telopod, carrying a mesal process on the posterior side and a lamellar process on the anterior side. The three newly described species show a high interspecific genetic distance of 20.9–25.3%. The specimens were collected from the Shola forests (high altitude montane forests) of the southern Western Ghats in Kerala, India. We suggest that more extensive sampling in this area and in the Indian subcontinent in general will yield more new millipede species for science and expand our understanding of the hitherto neglected Indian millipede fauna.

Acal, Dale Ann, Anna Sulikowska-Drozd e Radomir Jaskuła. "Filling the gaps in ecology of tropical tiger beetles (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae): first quantitative data of sexual dimorphism in semi-arboreal Therates from the Philippine biodiversity hotspot". PeerJ 12 (13 marzo 2024): e16956. http://dx.doi.org/10.7717/peerj.16956.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Background Sexual dimorphism, driven by sexual selection, leads to varied morphological distinctions in male and female insects, providing insights into selection pressures across species. However, research on the morphometric variability within specific taxa of tiger beetles (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae), particularly arboreal and semi-arboreal species, remains very limited. Methods We investigate sexual dimorphism in six semi-arboreal Therates tiger beetle taxa from the Philippines, focusing on morphological traits. We employed morphometric measurements and multivariate analyses to reveal patterns of sexual dimorphism between sexes within the taxa. Results Our results indicate significant sexual dimorphism in elytra width, with females consistently displaying broader elytra, potentially enhancing fecundity. Notable sexual size dimorphism was observed in Therates fulvipennis bidentatus and T. coracinus coracinus, suggesting heightened sexual selection pressures on male body size. Ecological factors, mating behavior, and female mate choice might contribute to the observed morphological variation. These findings emphasize the need for further studies to comprehend mating dynamics, mate choice, and ecological influences on morphological variations in semi-arboreal and arboreal tiger beetles.

Abstract (sommario):
Urban concept The theater has been situated in the city center in tehe urba block, which is an endpoint of Plečniks urban axis. Main point of urban-design idea is an extention of Plečniks axis, which connects Trnovo church and Kongresni trg square, and creating connection between the square and foot-path inside the block, which connects Slovinska street and Wolfova street. The seccond point was the minimalisation of demolitions of existing buildings. Architectural concept The theater building consist of two cubic objects, whose are in interaction. Contrast between heavy and closed volume of theater and light volume of restauration with fully-glassed wall, which connects iterior space with entrance exterior space. In the stone cubus of theater have been designed only three chinks, whose admoniches to entrance. The idea of the building consists in surprising difference between close window-less exterior of the house and sunlight-full interior. Thi idea has been used for designing of all layouts.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This Chapter Addresses A Different Kind Of Opinion About capital justice from those surveyed so far. It also uses a different method. It offers a microhistory, rooted in neighbourhood and commu nity, playing to a sense of place, and of incident-to the imagination, in short. On a June evening in 1829 Elizabeth Cureton of Coalbrookdale in Shropshire let John Noden into her parents’ cottage after her parents had gone to bed. The couple then had sex on the parlour floor. A couple of days later she told the constable that he had raped her. This at once enmeshed both of them in a legal process which stripped her of privacy and reputation and threatened him with death. She prosecuted him; and at the Shrewsbury assizes in August Noden was tried for rape, con victed, and sentenced to hang. Their neighbours and betters became excited commentators upon the drama. Her sexual character was stripped bare in accusations and gossip as the community appealed to save Noden’s life at her reputation’s expense.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract VABALLATH (Lucius Julius Aurelius Septimius Vaballathus Athenodorus)(fl. mid-3rd century A.O.) King of Palmyra, the son of ODAENATH and Queen ZENOBIA; ruler of his land from 266 to 272. Vaballath assumed his father’s title upon the latter’s death in 266, and may also have taken the title of corrector Orientis,or leading official of the East for the Roman Empire. Realistically, Vaballath held little power, as his mother Zenobia was the driving force behind Palmyra’s rise to leading state of the Eastern provinces. He finally did take the rank of Augustus in 272, but he was deposed when captured by Emperor AURELIAN a short time later. VADOMAR (mid-4th century A. D.) King of the ALAMANNI who shared power with his brother Gundomadus. Together they launched attacks on Gaul but signed a peace treaty with Emperor CONSTANTIUS n in 356. When Gundomadus died shortly therafter, elements of Vadomar’s people took hostile actions in Gaul (c. 357); two years later Constantius put these incursions to use by encouraging Vadomar to make war upon Julian the Apostate, whom the emperor did not trust. Another peace was signed in 359, this time with Julian. In 361, Vadomar entered and pillaged a part of Raetia. Julian’s solution was to kidnap the barbarian ruler. Ironically, Vadomar emerged as one of the first Germans to be hired by the emperors, for Emperor VALENS made him a general and sent him to recapture Nicaea from the usurper Procopius (356-366). He subsequently fought against the Persians but did not lose touch with his own people, his son Vithicab becoming king before being assassinated in 368.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter highlights Palestinian dispersal in Europe, the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Africa. Since the establishment of the State of Israel, members of the Palestinian (refugee) ‘diaspora’ have progressively found roots in all continents. Palestinians who were abroad at the end of the British Mandate and in 1948 were not allowed to return effectively became the first Palestinian refugees sur place. In the 1950s and 1960s, Palestinian refugees (including descendants) moved further afield from their places of residence (often de facto asylum), namely Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and present-day occupied Palestinian territory (oPt). They moved primarily to MENA countries, but also, to Western Europe and North America, looking for better life opportunities and increasingly, from the 1980s and 1990s, for international protection. This triggered the application of Article 1D(2) of the 1951 Refugee Convention discussed in Chapter II. In many countries, however, Article 1D continues not to be applied (or not applied properly), with claims of Palestinian refugees being assessed under Article 1A(2), downplaying the distinctive regime set up for them under the 1951 Convention, and the continuity of protection incorporated therein. Countries that offer more robust protection – including through accessible naturalization procedures – have steadily represented important destinations for Palestinians fleeing various parts of the Middle East in search of safe haven. However, in recent years restrictive asylum policies in Western countries (rectius, the Global North) may have contributed to an unprecedented rise in numbers of Palestinian refugees seeking sanctuary in new destinations. Ultimately, the growing Palestinian dispersal around the world, marked by growing vulnerability to protection therats, is a direct result of the failure to find a just solution to their plight.
