Abstract (sommario):
This study explores how successful Alvin Plantinga is in his contention that belief in God can be obtained and maintained in a basic way that attains and retains rationality for reflective persons. Plantinga indeed calls into question any confident presumption that theistic belief is epistemically irresponsible. He not only seriously challenges the necessity for propositional evidence to be available for such belief to be justified, he also supplies significant support for the conclusion that it remains legitimate even if it faces a preponderance of contrary considerations. However, Plantinga does not convincingly demonstrate that basic theistic belief merits privileged status by virtue of a character sufficiently analogous to paradigmatic perceptual, memory and ascriptive beliefs. Nor does he adequately argue its independence from the bearing of evidentialist concerns, especially regarding its background moorings. He needs to do more work to show the full warrant for theistic belief.

Abstract (sommario):
The object of this thesis is to present a reinterpretation of Adam Smith's philosophy. It works to show the pessimistic character of his thought that is so often overlooked by conventional analyses. The skepticism Smith holds for man can be seen in his theories on the accumulation of knowledge, morality, economics, and human progress. By emphasizing Smith's theory of man's subjugation to the natural order, an alternative interpretation is given of liberal economics. The role of God in Smith's philosophy will be shown to serve two purposes. God serves as Smith's final line of explanation, and it also provides humanity beneficial results through unintended outcomes.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis presents descriptive and explanatory accounts of both non-theism, the lack of belief in the existence of supernatural agents, and strong atheism, the moral opposition to such beliefs on the grounds that they are both harmful and signs of weak character. Based on my fieldwork with non-theist groups and individuals in the United States, United Kingdom, and Denmark, an online survey of over 3,000 non-theists from over 50 countries, and theories from both the social and cognitive sciences, I offer a new account of why nations with low economic and normative threats produce high levels of non-theism. This account is offered in place of the common explanation that religious beliefs provide comfort in threatening circumstances, which I show to be both anthropologically and psychologically problematic. My account centres on the role of threats, both existential and normative, in increasing commitment to ingroup ideologies, many of which are religious, and the important role of witnessing displays of commitment to religious beliefs in producing such beliefs in each new generation. In environments with low levels of personal and normative threat, commitment to religious ideologies decreases, extrinsic reasons for religious participation decrease, and superstitious actions decrease. Given the human tendency to believe the communications of others to the extent that they are backed up by action, such a decrease in displays of commitment to religious beliefs leads to increased non-theism in the span of a generation. In relation to strong atheism, I document a correlation, both geographical and chronological, between strong atheism and the presence of religious beliefs and demands in the public sphere. I then offer an explanation of this correlation based on the effects of threats against a modern normative order characterized by philosopher Charles Taylor as a system of mutual benefit and individual liberty.

Abstract (sommario):
As the medium of film has become ubiquitous, it has become an influential vehicle for the transmission of gender-related values. Because gender portrayals in popular entertainment film play a role in the formation of social identity, and can affect human behavior, this thesis studies a group of popular American entertainment film's portrayals of their male and female characters. The method used to study the films, which were selected from the years 1950-2012, utilizes qualitative content analysis. The findings suggest that the female characters within the films studied broke old gender stereotypes more consistently than did their male characters. That said, there was some progress in terms of how some of the later films portrayed their primary male characters.

Abstract (sommario):
[EN] The digitisation of HR processes into cloud-based solutions is progressing continuously. This thesis examines such transformations, derives a concrete process model and identifies the critical success factors. The methodology used for the investigation is of a qualitative nature. As a basis and preparatory measure to address the research questions, an extensive literature study in the HR field was carried out, with a special focus on publications on electronic human resources management (hereinafter e-HRM). Based on this knowledge and the combination of extensive practical experience with HR transformation projects, a study was published which presents the historical development of e-HRM and derived an optimised process model taking into account the technical HR requirements as well as the limitations of the new cloud technology. Subsequently, several HR experts who had already gained first-hand experience with HR processes in a cloud environment were interviewed to find out which success factors were relevant for such an HR transformation. Main findings of this thesis are the derivation of a best-practice project procedure model for the transformation of HR processes into a cloud-based solution and the identification of potential obstacles in the implementation of such projects. In addition, the motives for such a transformation, the drivers within an organisation, the current degree of HR digitisation, the necessary operational and strategic parameters and ultimately the impact on working methods are worked out. As a further result, an assessment of the use of HR metrics is given and potential new key figures are derived.

Abstract (sommario):
The study of perfection, progress and evolution is a central theme in the history of ideas. This thesis explores this theme seen and understood as part of a discourse in the new fields of anthropology, sociology and psychology in the nineteenth century. A particular focus is on the stance taken by philosophers, scientists and writers in the discussion of theories of human physical and mental evolution, as well as on their views concerning the nature of social progress and historical change. The wisdom and feasibility of improving the human species is discussed alongside an analysis of new methods of investigating and measuring physical and mental attributes of the human organism. The instruments used to assess the development of mind, body and society are described, and are viewed as part of an increased emphasis on the use of technology as an integral part of modern life, and as a means toward the ordered gathering of information in social-scientific practice. An international perspective is taken by observing the way in which ideas about the physical and mental development of humankind was discussed in light and consequence of English and European scientific exploration in the Southern Hemisphere. Further, an evaluation is made of the manner of the spread of new thought in the social sciences from the intellectual and cultural centre of England and Europe to the Anglo-European community located at the periphery in Australia in the late nineteenth century. In particular the educative role played by the non-professional enthusiast as a pivotal conduit for the dissemination of these ideas is highlighted and linked back to a significant tradition of amateur scholarship as a central phenomenon in the study of the history of ideas.

Abstract (sommario):
This doctoral dissertation seeks to investigate the reasons that lay behind the rise, success and decline of the Italian-run migrant workers organisation FILEF during the 1970s in Melbourne by reviewing and discussing some significant historical events. It does so in light of the existing literature, archival data and a string of oral accounts gathered from former and current key FILEF members and collaborators. It is hereby offering a better understanding of an otherwise poorly researched area of the Italian-Australian left-wing grassroots organisations in post-war Australia. The thesis has been divided into two parts, including introduction and conclusion. Part One (Chapters 1-5) reviews the historical and political background (in both Italy and Australia) that favoured the establishment of FILEF in Australia, including Melbourne, in the early 1970s; Part Two (Chapters 6-9) presents an analysis of the historical development and socio-political role of FILEF Melbourne between 1972 and 1980. Chapter One reviews the theoretical context, the representation of the history of FILEF in previous publications, primary and secondary sources, the research strategy and methodology. Chapters Two and Three anchor the history of FILEF Melbourne to their respective background in Italy and Australia. That is, Chapter Two examines the post-war Italian emigration and its politicising by the Italian Left; Chapter Three focuses on the postwar emigration of Italians to Australia and outlines a profile of the Italian-Australian community. Chapter Four maps the route of the Italian-Australian Left in the 1950s and 1960s, that is from Italia Libera to the Lega Italo-Australiana. Chapter Five reviews the circumstances that led the establishment of the PCI in Australia respectively. Chapter Six examines the origins and grassroots activism of FILEF in Melbourne in the 1970s, especially by looking at three areas of activity: migrant press, migrant welfare and migrant politics. Chapter Seven researches the vulnerability of FILEF to the pressures of conservative quarters by recounting the Italian communist move in (1975) and the federal funding cut (1976) episodes. Chapter Eight, thoroughly revisits the Salemi case (1977), while Chapter Nine explores the effects of the case and Salemis deportation on FILEF towards the end of the 1970s.

Hendry, Robin Findlay. "Realism, history and the quantum theory : philosophical and historical arguments for realism as a methodological thesis". Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1996. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1442/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Scientific realists and non-realists disagree over the reach of scientific knowledge: does it extend beyond the observational realm. Intuitions about abductive inferences are at the heart of many realist positions, but are brought into question by the non-realists' contention that theories are underdetermined by data, and the alleged circularity of realist attempts to show that such inferences are reliable. Some realists have tried to circumvent this problem by constructing methodological arguments for realism: if realism is embedded in scientific practice, the realist's picture of science might provide the best explanation of scientific success. Some non-realists reply by again pointing to the circularity of this strategy, which relies, again, on an abductive inference. Others deny that scientists do adopt realist stances. A methodological realist position is constructed: realist constraints on the acceptance and pursuit of theories-for instance requirements of intertheoretic coherence, and the avoidance of ad hoc explanation-have often contributed to progress in science. The position is immune to non-realist worries about the circularity of realist arguments, for it is a thesis about how science is practised, not the kind of knowledge it provides. The argument is pursued within a diachronic account of theory appraisal: Imre Lakatos' methodology of scientific research programmes (MSRP) examines the principles that govern the construction of theories, and provides criteria-achievement of progress-for the appraisal of research programmes. Although Lakatos may have seen these selection criteria, when fulfilled, as symptoms of something else-the fulfilment in the theory's development of some ideal of scientific honesty-achievement of Lakatosian progress can Serve as an end in itself. The realist methods mentioned in the last paragraph are then appraised as means to this end. Since the position has a methodological formulation and background, it is applied as a historical thesis to case studies in line with Lakatos' metamethodology. These comprise two explanatory forays into history: the consistency of Bohr's 1913 model of the atom, and the construction by Heisenberg and Schrodinger of the two original formulations of quantum mechanics. There follows one contemporary application: the construction of explanations in quantum chemistry using approximate models of molecules.

Abstract (sommario):
Texas law regarding the legal status of women and their property rights developed from the mingling of Spanish and English laws. Spanish laws regarding the protection of women's rights developed during the centuries-long Reconquest, when the Spanish Christians slowly took back the Iberian Peninsula from the Moorish conquerors. Women were of special importance to the expansion of Spanish civilization. Later, when Spain conquered and colonized the New World, these rights for women came, too. In the New World, women's rights under Spanish law remained the same as in Spain. Again, the Spanish were spreading their civilization across frontiers and women needed protection. When the Spanish moved into Texas, they brought their laws with them yet again. Archival evidence demonstrates that Spanish laws in early Texas remained essentially unchanged with regard to the status of women. Events in the history of England caused its legal system to develop in a different manner from Spain's. In England, the protection of property was the law's most important goal. With the growth of English common law, husbands gained the right to control their wives's lives in that married women lost all legal identity. When the English legal system crossed the Atlantic and took root in the United States, little changed, especially in the southern states, when migrants from there entered Texas. When these Anglo-American colonists came into contact with Spanish/Mexican laws, they tended to prefer the legal system they knew best. Accordingly, with the creation of the Republic of Texas, and later the state of Texas, most laws derived from English common law. From Spanish laws, legislators adopted only those that dealt with the protection of women, developed on the Spanish frontier, because they were so much more suitable to life in Texas. Later lawmakers and judges used these same laws to protect the family's property from creditors, as well as to advance the legal status of women in Texas.

Bennett, Cathy. "The U.S. Forest Service : business as usual : a thesis". Scholarly Commons, 2001. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/583.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
There are two prevailing views today about our forests and natural resources. Both views are considered the "right" view, each position comprising a set of values by which we make decisions and choices about using our natural resources. The "dominant world view," is anthropocentric and agriculturally based, with a strong belief that we can "fix" environmental problems through the use of technology. The key result of this view is a belief in the efficiency of economic expansion and its continued growth. The second view maintains we are part of nature, not masters of it, and that we have developed an arrogant attitude toward nature, believing we have the right to do as we wish regardless of the consequences. The result of this view is a belief in the interconnectedness of all life, thus all life has rights. This work argues that the "dominant" worldview shaped the policies of the U.S. Forest Service (USFS). Consistent with this worldview, the USFS management. paradigm was to provide the greatest return, a commodity-driven focus. However, when public values changed towards a more ecocentric view, the USFS should have reevaluated its method of doing business. Instead, it remained entrenched in its management objective- timber production. After the courts enjoined the USFS against cutting in the Pacific Northwest, aftet struggling with confrontational environmentalists and increased activism within the agency, the USFS attempted to re-write its management paradigm. However even though the policy sounds eco-friendly, the USFS is still mandated by Congress, and forced by appropriations approved by Congress, to cut trees. Different ideologies are accommodated only when they do not conflict with economics. Thus, in spite of changing values, it is still business as usual.

Abstract (sommario):
This cross-sectional study investigates the perceptions of sexual harassment among 271 non-academic university personnel. The survey administered measured perceptions of sexual harassment using 17 dependent variables which assessed attitudes toward hostile work environment and quid pro quo sexual harassment. The study found that differences do exist in perceptions of sexual harassment based on biological sex of the respondents and the biological sex of the sexual harassment target. The study also found that there are significant positive correlations between perceptions of sexual harassment and the variables of age and number of years in the workforce. This study found no significant differences in perceptions of sexual harassment between those respondents who had participated in sexual harassment education and those who did not.

Chu, Priscila Hiu Fong. "An investigation into new music theater in Hong Kong : thesis and composition portfolio". HKBU Institutional Repository, 2018. https://repository.hkbu.edu.hk/etd_oa/599.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Collaborative arts incorporate multiple theatrical elements including sound, movements, text, design, technology and visual elements into a synthetic original form of art. The versatile possibilities of the art form allow artists to actualize their boundless imaginations, and to experiment with an innovative expression to exhibit emotions, ideas, social concerns and philosophical issues. This study briefly summarizes the historical development of collaborative arts from Wagner and Kandinsky, and explores the sub-category, New Music Theater, in the contemporary context from the 1950s onwards. Artists and theorists featured include John Cage, Heiner Goebbels, Mauricio Kagel, George Aperghis and Daniel Ott. International composer Manos Tsangaris and Hong Kong artists Kung Chi Shing, Steve Hui and Amy Chan are interviewed to exhibit their personal creative and collaborative experience, as well as the current practice of New Music Theater in Hong Kong. The insights gathered from artists and theorists considered in this study have inspired the composer to create a composition portfolio, in particular a research-based New Music Theater project, Battle, along with an analysis to illustrate the interaction between the arts, the collaborative process and the effectiveness of the approach.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis examines the development of the Internet and associated technologies from 1968 to 1996, both in the United States and in other countries. It argues that the Internet is the product of the interaction between technical, organisational and cultural factors, and that this interaction can best be described as a series of transitions and transformations. Rather than focus on individual events, it examines the wider trends these events signify, and in doing so seeks to map out the broad structural changes which affected the medium's growth in the period in question. Within the context of this general objective, the thesis also explores the role of scientific communities in the development and dissemination of Internet technologies, and in particular how notions of information-sharing which are central to scientific practice sometimes overrode political and commercial imperatives. Issues of access also constitute a key theme in this study, and are explored by examining the processes by which the criteria for access to the medium was changed from one based on professional affiliation to one based on a user-pays principle. More broadly, the thesis also examines how shifting patterns of public and private investment affected the growth of the network, focusing on the gradual commercialisation of both access and content provision. The thesis concludes with a discussion of the relationship between the Internet and Web and traditional media forms, and how the Internet was incorporated into and the pre-existing media framework.

Wright, Kenneth Lynn. "Functional and Structural Characterization of a Human H4 Histone Gene Promoter: a Thesis". eScholarship@UMMS, 1990. https://escholarship.umassmed.edu/gsbs_diss/52.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Expression of the cell cycle dependent FO10S human H4 histone gene is regulated at both the transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. We have investigated the 5' promoter elements mediating the transcriptional aspects of its regulation. A detailed in vivo and in vitro transcriptional analysis of promoter deletion mutants from this gene has identified three positive regulatory elements and two potentially negative regulatory elements within the first 1000 base pairs upstream of the transcription initiation site. In addition, the minimal promoter located within the first 70 base pairs is required for accurate transcription initiation and contains one of two in vivo identified protein-DNA interactions, site II. Binding of the nuclear factor HiNF-D to this region was correlated with the turn-on of histone gene transcription following stimulation of quiescent normal diploid fibroblasts to re-enter the proliferative phase. The most proximal positive regulatory element contains the other in vivo identified protein-DNA interaction, site I. Results from a series of in vitroprotein-DNA interaction studies revealed the binding of two nuclear factors to this element. One protein, HiNF-C, is indistinguishable from the transcription factor Sp1 while the other, HiNF-E, is a novel, potentially histone-specific member of the ATF transcription factor family. Binding of HiNF-C was required to stabilize the interaction of HiNF-E and together this region stimulated transcription 5 fold. The near-distal transcription activator region lies between -418 and -213 base pairs and forms a single protein- DNA complex, H4UA-1. The interaction domain for H4UA-1 contains recognition sequences for both the thyroid hormone receptor and the nuclear factor CTF/NF-1. The far-distal activator region (-730 and -589 base pairs) was the strongest positive regulatory element identified in the H4 promoter. This region increased transcription 10 fold and contains three protein-DNA interactions. One of the factors, H4UA-2, is an ATF transcription factor closely related to the HiNF-E interaction in the proximal positive element. These studies have defined the functional human H4 histone promoter to be a complex, modular structure extending at least 1000 base pairs.

Abstract (sommario):
The thesis is concerned with the establishment of the Anglican presence in Central Queensland and the history of the first fifty years of the Diocese of Rockhampton. The historical method employed examined the attitudes and mentalities of the Anglicans during that fifty years and attempted to determine how the process of transplantation and adaptation of the English social institution was, or was not, achieved in the new physical and social environment. Various aspects of Anglican Diocesan administration such as recruitment of clergy, financial shortages, cultural isolation, racial issues, episcopal appointments and ecumenical relationships, are taken as units and analysed in the overall context of transplantation and adaptation. It is argued that ‘Australianisation’ came gradually and without conscious manipulation. Where change from the English model was attempted, it was often initiated by the English clergy rather than the Australian laity.

Sweeney, Patrick N. "William Walker in Nicaragua : a critical review in light of dependency literature : a Master of Arts thesis /". Digital Commons @ Butler University, 1986. http://digitalcommons.butler.edu/grtheses/41.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
William Walker's expedition should be a fertile source of examples of such incipient dependency. This is because that expedition was grounded in the political desires of Manifest Destiny and the pragmatic economics of a cross-isthmus connection between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans during the crucial years just before the U.S. Civil war. Walker's actions caused a war in Central America, brought the United States and England to the brink of war, effected a significant economic relationship, and influenced diplomatic relations between Nicaragua and the U.S. for years afterward. Because of these various actions and reactions, this episode in inter-American relations provides instances of many of the basic elements of the putative dependency relationships alluded to above. There were governments seeking economic advantage, businessmen seeking profitable investments, trade treaties negotiated, and military force used. It was a brief and intense period when economic interests were ultimately controlled by policy decisions.

Galea, Nicole S. "Wings of gauze : a history of dance in Her Majesty's Theatre, Brisbane, from 1926-1960". Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2002.

Abstract (sommario):
Theatre dance history in Brisbane is a topic with a paucity of published literature. This is a cause for concern as it suggests that the city has limited dance history worthy of documentation. The texts that do exist lack analysis and discourse, and can mostly be categorised as 'coffee table' book. Texts that deconstruct or question history and its authors, are conspicuously absent. To address the misconception of a lack of theatre dance history in Brisbane, this study therefore examines and analyses the history of theatre dance in Brisbane between 1926- 1960, using Her Majesty's Theatre as a case study. In adopting a historical post modern paradigm, this thesis finally constructs its own version of theatre dance history in Brisbane.
