Abstract (sommario):
Competitive interactions of wheat and wild oats in relation to variations in plant density of both species were investigated in field studies under irrigation and added fertilizer. Competition studies included comparisons by both additive and replacement series. The additive series was used to study plant responses to competition under fixed density of wheat and increasing density of wild oats. The replacement series was used to study plant responses to competition under constant total plant density with differing proportions of wheat and wild oats. On a per plant basis, shoot dry weight and leaf area index of wild oats were less than those of wheat at anthesis. However, the replacement series experiment indicated that wheat and wild oats were equivalent in competitiveness. Relative density of wild oats gave a better regression fit for wheat yield than did absolute wild oats density (r2values of 0.83 and 0.61, respectively). Yield of wheat grain was linearly proportional to relative density of wild oats.

Abstract (sommario):
Wild Life is a series of augmented photographs of animals and insects placed in vacant, overgrown spaces in suburban Bangalore. Taken through mobile AR apps like Holo and Augment, these photographs (or screenshots) situate virtual bodies within the frame of the mobile camera – creating something in between a document and fiction. The work investigates these processes of augmentation, which enable 3D representations of things in the real/physical world to be projected back into physical space that are then photographed. The larger phenomenon of AR photography also complicates traditional notions of “immersive” media – forcing one to interact with their environments. This essay reflects on the implications of mobile AR photography on the image and the referent. Through a phenomenological reading of and immersion into popular uses of mobile AR (like the game Pokémon Go), the essay is an observation of the convoluted relationships evoked between augmented bodies, their environments and the screens on which they manifest. Keywords: digital image, documentary, mobile AR, photography, Pokémon Go

Abstract (sommario):
Intraspecific and interspecific interference effects on growth, gas exchange, and water potential of wild oat and spring barley were measured under greenhouse conditions using a 1:1.06 barley to wild oat replacement series. Intraspecific barley interference affected barley growth more than interspecific wild oat interference. Interspecific wild oat interference with barley reduced wild oat growth more than intraspecific interference. Wild oat plant height surpassed barley plant height near barley anthesis. Growth and gas exchange of barley and wild oat responded the same to short-term water stress.

Abstract (sommario):
The modern era of professional baseball playoffs began in 1903, when the champions of the American League and the National League played the first World Series. Except for one year, 1904, this playoff system was maintained until 1969. Beginning in 1969, each of the two leagues in Major League Baseball (MLB) was divided into two divisions to accommodate the addition of extra teams in each league. From then through 1993, the two divisional champions in each league played against each other in an initial playoff round to determine which teams would go on to the World Series.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Wild forms are homogeneous polynomials whose smoothable rank is strictly larger than their border rank. The discrepancy between these two ranks is caused by the difference between the limit of spans of a family of zero-dimensional schemes and the span of their flat limit. For concise forms of minimal border rank, we show that the condition of vanishing Hessian is equivalent to being wild. This is proven by making a detour through structure tensors of smoothable and Gorenstein algebras. The equivalence fails in the non-minimal border rank regime. We exhibit an infinite series of minimal border rank wild forms of every degree $$d\ge 3$$ d ≥ 3 as well as an infinite series of wild cubics. Inspired by recent work on border apolarity of Buczyńska and Buczyński, we study the border varieties of sums of powers $$\underline{{\mathrm {VSP}}}$$ VSP ̲ of these forms in the corresponding multigraded Hilbert schemes.

Abstract (sommario):
Mushrooms have been dietary source in hilly and ethnic tribes of India. More than 5000 mushroom species are known worldwide and nearly 100 species are known to be poisonous for humans. Mushroom poisoning occurs due to unintentional and accidental ingestion of poisonous mushroom due to misidentification of poisonous variety as edible one. There has been increasingly incidence of reporting of mushroom poisoning cases nowadays. Here we are reporting case series of 4 patients admitted hailing from same village with accidental ingestion of poisonous mushrooms with clinical-laboratory profile and outcome at our institution. Mushroom Poisoning is an emerging healthcare concern nowadays. Education and mass awareness for identification of poisonous mushrooms is an important preventive measure. Early hospitalization, proper hydration, gastric decontamination, silibinin and N- acetyl cysteine therapy with hepato-renal support constitutes mainstay of treatment. Delay in treatment and complications results in poor prognosis and mortality.

Abstract (sommario):
Tom Stoppard has been credited with saying that the greatest time for radio drama was the year 1936, implying that technological change pushed radio dramas out of the mainstream and into the swamp. More recently, due in part to the advent of podcasting and on-line streaming, shifting audience interests and listening behaviours have forced the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) to adapt its programming of radio drama. In 2007, they stopped broadcasting regular, hour-long, stand-alone drama programs; shows like Sunday Showcase and Monday Night Playhouse were replaced by thirty-minute, episodic, limited-run series, broadcast in slots with higher listenerships. Afghanada1, a series about Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan, has been particularly successful and an original four-episode commitment has finally reached its conclusion at episode thirty-nine.

Abstract (sommario):
Wild plant genetic resources are increasingly becoming valuable for breeding, genomics, and ornamental horticulture programs. Wild relatives of horticultural species may offer desirable traits that are not available in cultivated varieties, but “wilds” often also have traits that are highly undesirable. Advances in comparative genomics and marker-assisted breeding facilitate the inclusion of the valued traits from wild materials in plant breeding programs. As technologies advance, wild plant genetic resources will become even more valuable for future research developments. This serves as an introduction to a series of proceedings articles from the American Society of Horticultural Science meetings in 2010 workshop entitled “Horticultural Value of Wild Genetic Resources.”

Abstract (sommario):
Addition series field experiments were conducted near Moscow, ID, in 1987 and 1988 to determine the relative aggressiveness of spring barley and wild oat and to determine the effect of barley and wild oat density and proportion on barley grain yield and wild oat seed rain. Regression analysis was used to describe the relationship of the aboveground biomass and grain yield to species density. Barley was more aggressive than wild oat. Barley biomass was affected most by intraspecific competition, while wild oat biomass was affected most by interspecific competition. Barley aggressiveness changed little throughout the growing season. Wild oat aggressiveness varied but was always less than barley aggressiveness. Increasing wild oat density had a negative, asymptotic-type effect on barley grain yield at all barley densities. However, the effect of wild oat was greatest at the lower density of barley. Increasing barley density decreased wild oat seed rain.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Maize is one of the main cereals cultivated worldwide and wild poinsettia is among the weeds that cause damage in grain production. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relative competitive ability of maize hybrids in the presence of a wild poinsettia biotype through experiments in replacement series. In preliminary experiments, it was determined the plant population in which the dry mass becomes constant. For the maize hybrids ‘Agroeste’, ‘Morgan’, ‘Nidera’, and ‘Velox’, as well as the wild poinsettia, the population was 20 individuals vase-1. Subsequently, experiments were carried out in replacement series in different combinations of species that varied the relative proportions (100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100%). The analysis of the species' competitiveness was carried out using diagrams applied to the replacement experiments and by the relative competitiveness indexes. The height (PH), chlorophyll index (CI), leaf area (LA), and the shoot dry mass (DM) of the plants were evaluated 50 days after emergence. There was competition between the maize hybrids and the wild poinsettia; both were negatively affected, regardless of the proportion of plants, causing reductions in the species' PH, CI, LA, and DM. The competition between maize and wild poinsettia occurs for the same resources in the environment, and interspecific competition caused greater damage to maize and wild poinsettia than intraspecific competition. In general, it was observed that only the hybrids ‘Nidera’ and ‘Velox’ were more competitive than the wild poinsettia.

Abstract (sommario):
Recent advances in tagging and biologging technology have yielded unprecedented insights into wild animal physiology. However, time-series data from such wild tracking studies present numerous analytical challenges owing to their unique nature, often exhibiting strong autocorrelation within and among samples, low samples sizes and complicated random effect structures. Gleaning robust quantitative estimates from these physiological data, and, therefore, accurate insights into the life histories of the animals they pertain to, requires careful and thoughtful application of existing statistical tools. Using a combination of both simulated and real datasets, I highlight the key pitfalls associated with analysing physiological data from wild monitoring studies, and investigate issues of optimal study design, statistical power, and model precision and accuracy. I also recommend best practice approaches for dealing with their inherent limitations. This work will provide a concise, accessible roadmap for researchers looking to maximize the yield of information from complex and hard-won biologging datasets. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Measuring physiology in free-living animals (Part II)’.

Abstract (sommario):
This study compares three yeast strains: two wild Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains (Sc1 and Sc5) and a commercial strain (Lc). The objective is to assess their fermentation efficiency and volatile compound production. The factors examined are yeast strain, initial sugar concentration of the must, and the presence of sulfur dioxide. Volatile aroma compounds, determined via GC–MS, were categorized into aromatic series based on aroma descriptors. Out of the volatile compounds analyzed, the yeast strain influenced 39, while sugar content and sulfur dioxide affected 16 and 23 compounds, respectively. Twelve compounds displayed odor activity values exceeding unity, with notable contributions from ethyl esters, β-damascenone, and β-ionone, impacting fruit, floral, and herbal aromatic series. Overall, the Sc1 yeast strain exhibited higher values in the aromatic series compared to the Lc strain. Multivariate analysis revealed that the Sc1 strain highlighted green fruit, citrus, and spice series, while the Lc strain stood out for smoky and herbal aromas. Cluster and principal component analyses emphasized that the aromatic composition of wines produced with wild yeast strains is more influenced by sulfur dioxide than initial sugar content, whereas the opposite holds true for the commercial strain. The key aroma series distinguishing between yeast strains were fruity, green fruit, and citrus for Sc1, and herbal, floral, and smoky for Lc. In conclusion, the Sc1 wild yeast strain showed similar fermentation behavior to the commercial strain, resulting in increased aroma compound presence. The distinctive aromatic profiles contributed by each strain enable winemakers to leverage this diversity and create wines that emphasize specific aromas.

Abstract (sommario):
The wild boar, Sus scrofa, is a mammal found in Eurasia and North Africa. The incidence of attacks has slowly risen due to the dwindling forest cover, an increase in population, and intrusion into the wild boar’s natural habitat. Injuries caused by wild boars include soft tissue injuries, fractures, internal organ damage, and, in some instances, death. Here, we describe three cases of wild boar attacks presented at Teaching Hospital Anuradhapura. Early intervention, stabilization, and transportation to the appropriate tertiary care are crucial.

Abstract (sommario):
Replacement series and growth analysis experiments under greenhouse and field conditions quantified and explained the competitive ability of wild oats and barley. Barley was a stronger competitor than wild oats under greenhouse and field conditions. The reciprocal yield approach showed that barley's intraspecific competition was 7.3 times greater than its interspecific competition with wild oats when calculated on a dry weight per plant basis. When leaf area per plant was the yield variable, barley's intraspecific competition was only 2.4 times greater than its interspecific competition. The difference was explained by wild oats' higher leaf area ratio. Barley had a greater leaf area, root and shoot biomass, absolute growth rate, and shoot-root ratio than wild oats, but wild oats' leaf area ratio was always higher. No differences were detected in relative growth rate and net assimilation rate.

Abstract (sommario):
Powdery mildew (Podosphaera leucotricha (Ell. E tEv.) Salm.) – is one of the most widespread apple diseases in world. Identification of forms, carrying resistance genes, is an important stage in breeding programs aimed at obtaining powdery mildew resistant apple varieties. Diagnostic DNA markers of target genes will increase reliability of identification and efficiency of apple breeding for the creation of resistant genotypes. The purpose of this study was molecular genetic testing of wild species of genus Malus Mill. According to Pl-1, Pl-w and Pl-d powdery mildew resistance genes for revealing polymorphism of the studied loci and identification of valuable genotypes for breeding. The study subjects were the wild species of genus Malus Mill. of different ecological and geographic origin. The Pl-1 gene was identified using AT20-SCAR marker, Pl-w gene - EM M02 marker, Pl-d gene - EM DM01 marker. AT20-SCAR marker (Pl-1 gene) was identified in 37.3 % of genotypes. EM M02 marker (Pl-w gene) was detected in 16.4 % of the studied forms. EM DM01 marker (Pl-d gene) is present in 10.4 % of the analyzed forms. At least one of the studied molecular markers is present in the genome of 52.2 % of apple wild species. The Pl-1 gene in apple wild species is most spread in Baccatae series, the Pl-w gene - in Baccatae and Sieboldinae series, the Pl-d gene - in Orientalis series. Wild species M. baccata 2319, M. mandshurica 41947, M. sachalinensis 85, M. sachalinensis 97, M. purpurea v. pendula 2396 are characterized by combination of Pl-1 and Pl-w genes; M. turkmenorum 13283 and M. turkmenorum 29 421 - Pl-1 and Pl-d genes; M. denticulata 29416 - Pl-w and Pl-d genes, which allows to recommend them as promising complex sources of high powdery mildew resistance for breeding.

Abstract (sommario):
Intraregional similarities and interregional differences in wild steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) abundance trends over time throughout British Columbia were identified using catch-per-angler-day (CpAD) as an index of abundance. This index was calculated using sport angler catch and effort data obtained by an ongoing mail-out questionnaire begun in the fiscal year 1967-1968. Despite high interannual variability in CpAD for individual rivers, its validity as an index of trends over time in wild steelhead abundance for geographic regions or watersheds is reinforced by similar trends yielded by both fishery-dependent and fishery-independent data. Time series methods generally could not build statistical support for the hypotheses that sudden regulation changes, or the gradual introduction over time of a catch and release philosophy, are generally important factors affecting trends over time in CpAD. This bolsters our confidence that the general patterns in mean CpAD over time within regions and watersheds reasonably index actual wild adult in-river steelhead abundance. We propose that the trends that we observe in wild steelhead CpAD are primarily driven by environmental influences. Some candidate environmental time series currently being considered and investigated are coastal upwelling, various ocean and atmospheric climate indices, freshwater discharge histories, and ultraviolet radiation.

A series of novel molecules were designed by substituting hydrogen at the P1/ P1′ positions with hydroxyl group increasing the bioavailability these had better ADME properties and binding affinity towards HIV-1 protease. The biological activity of these inhibitors were predicted by a model equation generated by the regression analysis between biological activity (log 1/Ki) of known inhibitors and there combined docking scores from six of the wild type protein docking. The synthetic studies are in progress.

Abstract (sommario):
Ordinality is a numerical property that nectarivores may use to remember the specific order in which to visit a sequence of flowers, a foraging strategy also known as traplining. In this experiment, we tested whether wild, free-living rufous hummingbirds ( Selasphorus rufus ) could use ordinality to visit a rewarded flower. Birds were presented with a series of linear arrays of 10 artificial flowers; only one flower in each array was rewarded with sucrose solution. During training, birds learned to locate the correct flower independent of absolute spatial location. The birds' accuracy was independent of the rewarded ordinal position (1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th), which suggests that they used an object-indexing mechanism of numerical processing, rather than a magnitude-based system. When distance cues between flowers were made irrelevant during test trials, birds could still locate the correct flower. The distribution of errors during both training and testing indicates that the birds may have used a so-called working up strategy to locate the correct ordinal position. These results provide the first demonstration of numerical ordinal abilities in a wild vertebrate and suggest that such abilities could be used during foraging in the wild.

Abstract (sommario):
Wild berry species are known to exhibit a wide range of pharmacological activities. They have long been traditionally applied for their antiseptic, antimicrobial, cardioprotective and antioxidant properties. The aim of the present study is to reveal the potential for selective antiviral activity of total methanol extracts, as well as that of the anthocyanins and the non-anthocyanins from the following wild berries picked in Bulgaria: strawberry ( Fragaria vesca L.) and raspberry ( Rubus idaeus L.) of the Rosaceae plant family, and bilberry ( Vaccinium myrtillis L.) and lingonberry ( Vaccinium vitis-idaea L) of the Ericaceae. The antiviral effect has been tested against viruses that are important human pathogens and for which chemotherapy and/or chemoprophylaxis is indicated, namely poliovirus type 1 (PV-1) and coxsackievirus B1 (CV-B1) from the Picornaviridae virus family, human respiratory syncytial virus A2 (HRSV-A2) from the Paramyxoviridae and influenza virus A/H3N2 of Orthomyxoviridae. Wild berry fruits are freeze-dried and ground, then total methanol extracts are prepared. Further the extracts are fractioned by solid phase extraction and the non-anthocyanin and anthocyanin fractions are eluted. The in vitro antiviral effect is examined by the virus cytopathic effect (CPE) inhibition test. The results reveal that the total extracts of all tested berry fruits inhibit the replication of CV-B1 and influenza A virus. CV-B1 is inhibited to the highest degree by both bilberry and strawberry, as well as by lingonberry total extracts, and influenza A by bilberry and strawberry extracts. Anthocyanin fractions of all wild berries strongly inhibit the replication of influenza virus A/H3N2. Given the obtained results it is concluded that wild berry species are a valuable resource of antiviral substances and the present study should serve as a basis for further detailed research on the matter.

Abstract (sommario):
Warsaw Wild Captive Pisula Stryjek rats (WWCPS) - Establishing a breeding colony of Norway Rat in captivity It is believed that the history of laboratory rat dates back to 1820-ies, which is about 300 generations. This relatively short evolutionary distance, drastically different environment and selective breeding could have caused differences in behaviour between the laboratory rat and his wild counterpart - Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus). The vast majority of research concerning differences between wild and laboratory rats was conducted over 30 years ago. The knowledge acquired as a result of that research seems far from being complete. Over a quarter of a century could have deepened the described differences. Nowadays the change in experimental approach, in favour of low stress conditions, can give a new insight into this problem. This article describes process of establishing a laboratory line of wild Norway rat, which will take part in a broad series of comparative studies. 16 wild rats were trapped in 5 distant parts of Warsaw. Most of wild rats successfully adapted to captive conditions, mating successfully and producing litters, which have survived to adolescence.

Abstract (sommario):
Parasite transmission between farmed and wild salmon affects the sustainability of salmon aquaculture in Pacific Canada. Understanding and managing parasites in aquaculture is challenged by spatial and temporal variation in transmission dynamics. We developed a mechanistic model that connects sea louse (Lepeoptheirus salmonis) outbreak and control on farmed salmon (Salmo salar) to spatiotemporal dynamics of sea lice on migrating wild juvenile salmon (Oncorhynchus keta and Oncorhynchus gorbuscha). We fitted the model to time series of sea lice on farmed salmon and spatial surveys of juvenile wild salmon in the Broughton Archipelago. We used the parameterized model to evaluate alternative management scenarios based on the resulting sea louse infestations and predicted mortality of wild salmon. Early and coordinated management of sea lice on salmon farms was most effective for controlling outbreaks in wild salmon, while uncoordinated treatments led to a resurgence of sea lice on salmon farms during the juvenile salmon migration. This study highlights the importance of incorporating spatiotemporal variability when considering infectious disease dynamics shared by farmed and wild hosts, particularly when migratory wildlife are involved.

Abstract (sommario):
Behavioural Approaches to Conservation in the Wild is based on a series of papers from a symposium entitled "Conservation and Behaviour in the Wild" held during the Animal Behaviour Society annual meetings in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1995. The book was compiled because the editors (and others) felt that both behavioural researchers and conservation biologists did not adequately recognize the important role that behavioural studies could play in conservation efforts. Traditionally, behavioural researchers have limited the conservation applications of their research to captive breeding and reintroduction programmes of endangered species, while conservation biologists have focussed on landscape design and ecosystem restoration without necessarily considering animal behaviour. The objectives of the book are twofold: to stimulate behavioural researchers to think about how their work can contribute to conservation of biological diversity, and to show conservation biologists the relevance of behavioural research in solving conservation problems. As expected given the location of the symposium and the high proportion of northern hemisphere contributors, most examples presented are from that region.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT In the present study, glutaryl-7-amino cephalosporanic acid acylase from Pseudomonas sp. strain 130 (CA130) was mutated to improve its enzymatic activity and stability. Based on the crystal structure of CA130, two series of amino acid residues, one from those directly involved in catalytic function and another from those putatively involved in surface charge, were selected as targets for site-directed mutagenesis. In the first series of experiments, several key residues in the substrate-binding pocket were substituted, and the genes were expressed in Escherichia coli for activity screening. Two of the mutants constructed, Y151αF and Q50βN, showed two- to threefold-increased catalytic efficiency (k cat/Km ) compared to wild-type CA130. Their Km values were decreased by ca. 50%, and the k cat values increased to 14.4 and 16.9 s−1, respectively. The ability of these mutants to hydrolyze adipoyl 6-amino penicillinic acid was also improved. In the second series of mutagenesis, several mutants with enhanced stabilities were identified. Among them, R121βA and K198βA had a 30 to 58% longer half-life than wild-type CA130, and K198βA and D286βA showed an alkaline shift of optimal pH by about 1.0 to 2.0 pH units. To construct an engineered enzyme with the properties of both increased activity and stability, the double mutant Q50βN/K198βA was expressed. This enzyme was purified and immobilized for catalytic analysis. The immobilized mutant enzyme showed a 34.2% increase in specific activity compared to the immobilized wild-type CA130.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper we provide a unified theory, and associated invariance principle, for the large-sample distributions of the Dickey–Fuller class of statistics when applied to unit root processes driven by innovations displaying nonstationary stochastic volatility of a very general form. These distributions are shown to depend on both the spot volatility and the integrated variation associated with the innovation process. We propose a partial solution (requiring any leverage effects to be asymptotically negligible) to the identified inference problem using a wild bootstrap–based approach. Results are initially presented in the context of martingale differences and are later generalized to allow for weak dependence. Monte Carlo evidence is also provided that suggests that our proposed bootstrap tests perform very well in finite samples in the presence of a range of innovation processes displaying nonstationary volatility and/or weak dependence.

Abstract (sommario):
The ciliated protozoon Tetrahymena thermophila contains membrane-bounded secretory organelles termed mucocysts, the release of which has previously been characterized ultrastructurally as a model system for the events occurring during membrane fusion and protein secretion. Recently, a series of secretory mutant strains of Tetrahymena has been isolated following mutagenesis of a parental wild-type strain designated SB210. In this study, the correlates of non-release in one unique mutant strain of this series, designated SB281, are described. SB281 appears to express a diminished (undetectable) level of the major 34000 Mr proteinaceous secretory product of Tetrahymena, as determined by Western immunoblot analysis and indirect immunofluorescence labelling. Thin-section electron-microscopic studies of these cells reveal that they possess no docked or free mature mucocysts. In addition, freeze-fracture electron microscopy demonstrates that an intramembrane particle array termed the rosette, present in the plasma membrane of wild-type cells above sites of docked mucocysts, is absent in the plasma membrane of mutant SB281 cells. A morphometric analysis of intramembrane particles in the plasma membrane of both wild-type and mutant cells indicates that both strains have a similar intramembrane particle density in both leaflets of the the plasma membrane. Although assembled rosettes are missing in the plasma membrane of mutant cells, a 15 nm intramembrane particle size class does exist in the plasma membrane of the mutant, but this size class is significantly reduced in number relative to wild-type.

Abstract (sommario):
The competitiveness of three hybrid and three open-pollinated canola cultivars against two wild oat populations was determined under controlled environment conditions at two plant densities and five canola:wild oat ratios (100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, 0:100). Analysis of replacement series and derivation of relative crowding coefficients (RCC), based on shoot dry weight or leaf area, indicated that hybrid canola cultivars were twice as competitive than open-pollinated cultivars when weed interference was relatively high (i.e., high plant density and vigorous wild oat growth). Little difference in competitiveness among cultivar types was apparent when weed interference was lower. The results of this study suggest that hybrid canola cultivars may be best suited for use in an integrated weed management program, particularly for farmers of organic or low input cropping systems. Abstract (sommario):
The extent of Neotyphodium based resistance in wild fescue to bird cherry-oat aphid (Rhopalosiphum padi) was determined by quantifying densities of this aphid on a series of Neotyphodiuminfected (E+) and uninfected (E-) tall fescue entries. Little or no aphid survival was observed on E+ 'Kentucky 31' tall fescue and three E+ wild tall fescue accessions (16079, 15978, 16075) from Tunisia; however, three E+ Tunisia accessions (16036, 16044, 16085) supported populations of R. padi. These results suggest that wild tall fescue from Tunisia harbour diverse Neotyphodium endophytes. They also support earlier observations by entomologists that the magnitude of insect (including aphids) resistance in E+ grasses varies with the host genotype and Neotyphodium strain involved in the interaction. Abstract (sommario):
AbstractWe tested a series of hypotheses on drivers of habitat selection by the Vulnerable wild yak Bos mutus, combining distribution-wide sighting data with species distribution modelling approaches. The results indicate that climatic conditions are of paramount importance in shaping the wild yak's distribution on the Tibetan Plateau. Habitat selection patterns were seasonal, with yaks appearing to select areas closer to villages during the vegetation-growing season. Unexpectedly, our index of forage quantity had a limited effect in determining the distribution of the species. Overall, our results suggest that expected changes in climate for this region could have a significant impact on habitat availability for wild yaks, and we call for more attention to be focused on the unique wildlife in this ecosystem.

Abstract (sommario):
Pathogen spillover represents an important cause of biodiversity decline. For wild bee species such as bumblebees, many of which are in decline, correlational data point towards viral spillover from managed honeybees as a potential cause. Yet, impacts of these viruses on wild bees are rarely evaluated. Here, in a series of highly controlled laboratory infection assays with well-characterized viral inocula, we show that three viral types isolated from honeybees (deformed wing virus genotype A, deformed wing virus genotype B and black queen cell virus) readily replicate within hosts of the bumblebee Bombus terrestris . Impacts of these honeybee-derived viruses - either injected or fed - on the mortality of B. terrestris workers were, however, negligible and probably dependent on host condition. Our results highlight the potential threat of viral spillover from honeybees to novel wild bee species, though they also underscore the importance of additional studies on this and other wild bee species under field-realistic conditions to evaluate whether pathogen spillover has a negative impact on wild bee individuals and population fitness.

Abstract (sommario):
In a replacement series study, barley was more competitive than green foxtail and wild oat at 28/22 and 22/16 C. Wild oat was more competitive with green foxtail at 22/16 C than at 28/22 C. Maximum green foxtail dry weight and leaf area was produced at 28/22 C. As temperature increased, maximum dry weight and leaf area occurred earlier during plant growth. Similarly, maximum wild oat leaf area occurred earlier with increasing temperature, but the greatest leaf area was observed at 16/10 C. Leaf area ratio (LAR) and relative growth rate (RGR) of wild oat did not differ markedly between temperature regimes. Green foxtail LAR was higher while RGR was lower at 16/10 C than at 22/16 or 28/22 C. Under the 16/10 C regime green foxtail produced little mature seed. Greatest seed numbers were produced at 28/22 C. Wild oat produced mature seed under all temperature regimes with the greatest seed numbers produced at 22/16 C.

Abstract (sommario):
Wild oat control options are limited in western Canada due to resistance to most common herbicides. Control of wild oat with pyroxasulfone, a soil-applied, very-long-chain fatty-acid inhibitor, was investigated. A series of greenhouse and field experiments were conducted to isolate the effects of vertical seed position, site of herbicide interception, and tillage on wild oat control with pyroxasulfone in comparison with triallate. In greenhouse experiments, wild oat shoot length (soil surface to leaf tip) was reduced (P<0.05) in shallow-seeded wild oat compared with deep-seeded wild oat with pyroxasulfone (6.2 and 9.8 cm, respectively) and triallate (3.7 and 13.2 cm, respectively). Soil-applied pyroxasulfone remained in the top 2.5 cm of the soil with or without a simulated rainfall event. Pyroxasulfone was most effective if either the seed or the shoot 1 cm above the seed intercepted the herbicide layer. If a wild oat emerges from deeper in the soil profile, the sensitive part of the seedling may not intercept an effective rate of pyroxasulfone in the soil. In field experiments comparing deep- and shallow-seeded wild oat treated with pyroxasulfone and triallate in fields with and without tillage, there were no significant effects of tillage alone on wild oat shoot length. Deep-seeded wild oat emerged early, and while herbicides reduced shoot growth, shoots were >10 cm. Shallow-seeded wild oat had delayed emergence, possibly due to reduced soil moisture, and herbicides reduced shoot growth to <10cm. Pyroxasulfone is likely to be more effective in no-till fields where wild oat seeds are not located deep in the soil.

Abstract (sommario):
Resistance to drought stress is one of the most favorable traits in breeding programs yet drought stress is one of the most poorly addressed biological processes for both phenomics and genetics. In this study, we investigated the potential of using a time-series chlorophyll fluorescence (ChlF) analysis to dissect the ChlF fingerprints of salt overly sensitive (SOS) mutants under drought stress. Principle component analysis (PCA) was used to identify a shifting pattern of different genotypes including sos mutants and wild type (WT) Col-0. A time-series deep-learning algorithm, sparse auto encoders (SAEs) neural network, was applied to extract time-series ChlF features which were used in four classification models including linear discriminant analysis (LDA), k-nearest neighbor classifier (KNN), Gaussian naive Bayes (NB) and support vector machine (SVM). The results showed that the discrimination accuracy of sos mutants SOS1-1, SOS2-3, and wild type Col-0 reached 95% with LDA classification model. Sequential forward selection (SFS) algorithm was used to obtain ChlF fingerprints of the shifting pattern, which could address the response of sos mutants and Col-0 to drought stress over time. Parameters including QY, NPQ and Fm, etc. were significantly different between sos mutants and WT. This research proved the potential of ChlF imaging for gene function analysis and the study of drought stress using ChlF in a time-series manner.
