This article deals with the issue of waste collection from yachts and tall ships that is important from the perspective of sustainable tourism. There are, of course, procedures that regulate the passing of waste by vessels, which also apply to tourist vessels. However, the authors made an attempt to analyze the process of waste collection carried out under non-standard conditions, i.e., during a mass event held at the port of the Tall Ships Races final, which took place in 2017 in Szczecin. Many yachts and tall ships participated in the event, and in addition, due to the multiplicity of attractions, the event area was very popular among tourists and visitors (over one and a half million people in three days). Due to the safety of the participants, and the need to maintain high aesthetic standards, the procedures for collecting waste from vessels had to be modified. In addition to the preparation of a flowchart on which the existing procedural modifications were presented, based on the source data received from the waste collection company, quantitative and structural analyses of the waste were carried out. The conducted research showed that the waste collection required the coordination of the activities of many entities. This article also draws attention to operational problems that occurred during waste collection from vessels during the Tall Ships Races final. Statistical analysis allowed for the determination of the days where the vessels disposed the most solid and liquid waste, and how the structure of the amount of collected waste was shaped. The Tall Ships Races is the most popular and the biggest event of this type in the world—gathering the largest number of tall ships. They are carried out annually, and their route leads through various ports; however, the regatta final is the culminating point that attracts the largest number of tourists. For this reason, many cities are trying to become its organizers. In 2018, the finals took place in the Dutch port of Harlingen, and in 2019, the Danish port of Aarhus will be responsible for its organization. Two years later, in 2021, the Tall Ships Races regatta final will be hosted by Szczecin again. The results of the research conducted in this article may be helpful for appropriate preparation by subsequent ports for waste collection, which may contribute to the safety of the participants taking part in the event.

e18557 Background: T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoblastic lymphoma (T-ALL/T-LBL) is a rare and aggressive form of malignancy of immature T-Cells. Despite advancements in treatment, disparities in survival rates among different racial/ethnic groups have been reported. While there is some data available comparing survival outcomes in children with ALL based on ethnicity, there is limited data on comparison of survival outcomes in patients specifically with T-ALL. Here we compared the survival outcomes of T-ALL patients from a minority rich cohort including both children and adults. Methods: This is a single center observational retrospective study analyzing T-ALL patients from 2004-2022 who were followed up at our center. We collected and analyzed data on demographics, race, immunophenotype, treatment regimens, and survival outcomes. Race (used here interchangeably with ethnicity) was categorized as Hispanic, Black, White and other races. Immunophenotype was classified as Pro-TALL, Pre-TALL, Cortical TALL, Medullary TALL and Early T cell precursor-ALL. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression models were used for analysis. Overall survival (OS) was compared using the Kaplan-Meier curve and log-rank test. P-values < / = 0.05 were considered as statistically significant. All analyses were done using R statistical software. Results: We included 59 patients with T-ALL (78% males and 22% females) for analysis. The median age at diagnosis was 20 years (range 1-48 years). Thirty two percent were Black, 29% Hispanic, 17% White and 14% were of other races (8%-not reported). Median follow up duration was 30 months. We compared OS based on sex, race, and immunophenotype. Univariate analysis showed significant difference in OS only for race (p value 0.006). Hispanic patients had the worse outcomes with lower OS compared to White (p = 0.02), and other ethnicities (p = 0.04). The difference was still significant (p = 0.016 and 0.01 respectively) after correction for age using multivariate analysis (age groups: < 15 and = / > 15 years; 15 years being the median age for Hispanic population). There was no difference in OS between remaining races. Median overall survival was not reached in any group. Conclusions: Although sample size is small, our study showed that the OS in Hispanics was lower than in White and other races in a minority rich population including adults and children with T-ALL. Whether this difference is due to systemic barriers in accessing care and/or due to inherent characteristics affecting disease severity/response to treatment remains to be explored. Interestingly, we didn’t find any difference in survival outcomes for black race and for different immunophenotypes. This study adds to the literature demonstrating disparities in survival among different racial groups with T-ALL and the need to address these disparities through targeted interventions.

Proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.), also known as common millet or broomcorn millet, is an important ancient crop mostly grown for food, feed, and fodder purposes largely in China, Russia, India, and the USA. It is an under-researched and under-utilized crop. Over 29,000 germplasm accessions have been conserved in genebanks globally. Five races (miliaceum, patentissimum, contractum, compactum, ovatum) have been recognized in proso millet based on panicle morphology and shape. The genebank at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics conserves 849 accessions of proso millet originating from 30 countries and represents all five races. Characterization of these germplasm accessions revealed large variability for morpho-agronomic traits, including for days to 50% flowering (26 to 50 days), plant height (20 to 133 cm), and inflorescence length (22 to 400 mm). On average, the race miliaceum was tall (62 cm) with long panicles (209 mm) and ovatum had short plants (46 cm) with small panicles (108 mm). The average Gower’s distance based on 18 morpho-agronomic traits on 841 accessions was 0.261. The race miliaceum had the highest among accessions within race average pairwise distance (0.254), while the distance was the lowest in ovatum (0.192). The races miliaceum and ovatum showed the highest divergence with each other (0.275), while the lowest divergence was observed between compactum and ovatum (0.229). Trait-specific sources were identified for early maturity, tall plants, long inflorescences, and greater seed size. The information on variability and trait-specific sources identified could potentially support proso millet improvement.

Abstract The aim of the study was to determine air pollution over the sea surface (North Sea and Baltic Sea) comparing to concentration in the closest land areas to examine the impact of ships on the level of PM concentration. The analysis is based on the measurements made during the two weeks cruise of the tall ship Fryderyk Chopin from Edinburg to Kołobrzeg. The highest pollution levels were observed in locations distant from the coast, especially over Baltic Sea, with increasing concentrations when other ships approaching. The article attempts to assess the possibility of migration of pollutants to these areas from land-based sources, and thus indicate the degree of their participation in the level of pollution present at sea.

AbstractThe genebank at ICRISAT, India that serves as a world repository for sorghum germplasm conserves 39,234 accessions from 93 countries, including 6249 from seven South Asian countries: Afghanistan (6), Bangladesh (9), India (6101), the Maldives (10), Nepal (8), Pakistan (90) and Sri Lanka (25). A total of 5340 georeferenced accessions were used to identify gaps, and 5322 accessions that were characterized at ICRISAT were used to assess the diversity in the collection. Accessions of basic races varied widely than those of intermediate races for flowering in the postrainy season, plant height in both rainy and postrainy seasons, panicle exsertion, panicle length and width, seed size and 100 seed weight. Landraces from India were late flowering, tall and produced stout panicles and larger seeds. Landraces from Pakistan flowered early in both seasons and produced stout panicles and those from Sri Lanka were late flowering and tall in both seasons, produced more basal tillers and stout panicles. A total of 110 districts in 20 provinces of India, 13 districts in three provinces of Pakistan, three districts in Bangladesh and five districts in four provinces of Sri Lanka were identified as geographical gaps. Sorghum bicolor subsp. verticilliflorum, S. halepense and S. propinquum were identified as taxonomic gaps in the collection. Therefore, it is suggested to explore the districts identified as gaps to enrich the variability in the world collection of sorghum at ICRISAT.

The aim of the study was to determine air pollution over the sea surface (North Sea and Baltic Sea) compared to the situation in ports, as well as to examine the impact of ships on the level of particulate matter (PM) concentration. The measurements, made during the two-week cruise of the tall ship Fryderyk Chopin, demonstrated that the principal source of PM emission over the sea surface are passing ships equipped with internal combustion engines, including quite numerous units powered by marine oil. The highest pollution levels were observed in locations distant from the coast, with increasing concentrations when other ships were approaching. During the cruise, at least two places were identified with increased PM concentration (18–28 μg/m3 for PM10 and 15–25 μg/m3 for PM2.5) caused by passing ships. The share of PM2.5 fraction in the general PM concentration in these places increased from 70–72% to 82–85%, which means that combustion emission dominated. In turn, measurements made in ports (Copenhagen and Kołobrzeg) showed lower levels of air pollution and indicated a typical variability of the PM concentrations characteristic for land areas. The results confirm the need for determining suitable solutions for sustainable sea transport.

AbstractThis essay reflects on the workers in Atlantic and Indian Ocean port cities who made possible the rapidly expanding system of global capitalism between 1650 and 1850. In all of the ports treated in this volume, a mixture of multi-ethnic, male and female, unskilled, often unwaged laborers collectively served as the linchpins that connected local hinterlands (and seas) to bustling waterfronts, tall ships, and finally the world market. Although the precise combination of workers varied from one port to the next, all had an occupational structure in which half or more of the population worked in trade or the defense of trade, for example in shipbuilding/repair, the hauling of commodities to and from ships, and the building of colonial infrastructure, the docks and roads instrumental to commerce. This “motley crew” – a working combination of enslaved Africans, European/Indian/Chinese indentured servants, sailors, soldiers, convicts, domestic workers, and artisans – were essential to the production and worldwide circulation of commodities and profits.

Ronald is a high-yielding, white-hulled, tall semidwarf oat (Avena sativa L.) cultivar with greatly improved panicle emergence compared with previously tested semidwarf lines. Ronald is postulated to carry the crown rust resistance combination Pc38, Pc39 and Pc68, which is highly effective against most of the present crown rust races on the Canadian prairies. It has very good resistance to loose and covered smut and good resistance to most of the prevalent races of stem rust, due to the likely presence of Pg2, Pg9 and Pg13, and moderate tolerance to barley yellow dwarf virus. Ronald has good kernel characteristics, such as high test weight, kernel weight and percent plump kernels. The grain characteristics exhibited by Ronald including hull-to-groat ratio, protein content and oil content should make it suitable for milling. It has excellent resistance to lodging. Ronald is well adapted for the oat growing areas of western Canada and in particular the Black Soil Zone of Manitoba and Saskatchewan where oat crown rust is prevalent. Tuned liquid column damper (TLCD) is a kind of passive damper that use water sloshing motion to control structural vibration in tall buildings, wind turbines and ships. This paper presents finite element analysis of sloshing in 2D water tank using a pressure based Eulerian approach. The fluid domain is discretised by an isoparametric quadrilateral finite element. The cavity was modelled with rigid contours and free surface in order to study the decoupled liquid reservoir. Next, the cavity was coupled to a flexible structure with free vibration and forced vibration. The numerical results obtained by the created program were validated using experimental results [1] presenting acceptable errors with less than 5k elements.

Talinum triangulare (Jacq.) Willd is extensively cultivated vegetable in the agro-ecological zone of the tropical rainforest. It grows to the height of about 10-100 cm tall, bearing small pink flowers, some with white to light purple flowers and with fleshy light green to forest green leaves with swollen roots. It is one of the commonly preferred leafy vegetables in southern Nigeria and Cameroon, where it is used in thickening of soup and as additive in increasing the bulk of stews. It is now attracting considerable interest worldwide as medicinal plant and spice. Previously, we have carried out the morphological characterization of this plant germplasm, where we reported paucity of information on the genetics and molecular characteristics of the plant. This present study aimed at carrying out molecular characterization of different land races of Talinum triangulare germplasm with a view to describing the genetic information / traits of the available land races. The different land races of Talinum triangulare were collected from different part of Nigeria including Uyo, AkwaIbom State bordering Cameroon republic. The research work was carried out at International Institute of Tropical Agriculture Laboratory, IITA, Ibadan, Nigeria. High quality total DNA was isolated from the different Talinumsamples, quantified and cross examined for purity. The genomic DNA samples were treated to PCR amplification using different primers (ribulosebisphosphatecarboxylase rbcL, trnH-psbA intergenic spacer trn H-psbA, maturase K matK, nuclear internal transcribed spacer ITS) and DNAbarcoding technique. Gel electrophoresis was performed and the fragment of the intact DNAi.e. the amplicons was gel eluted, subjected to sequencing and the Basic local alignment search tool BLAST were carry out to verify the sequence homology. Nevertheless, no difference was detected among the Talinum samples, signifying that the land races were genotypically identical and that the phenotypical differences observed were invariably due to environments.

Tibor is a new naked-seeded or hulless oat cultivar (Avena nuda L.) suitable for growing in eastern Canada. Compared with the naked-seeded check cultivar Terra, Tibor is higher in groat yield, seed and hectolitre weight and seed protein content. It has excellent straw strength coupled with tall plant height and early maturity, but shows no improvement over Terra in the percentage of covered seeds (approximately 5%) in threshed grain samples or in resistance to diseases such as barley yellow dwarf virus, septoria or stem rust. Tibor is susceptible to prevalent races of crown rust but the disease is slow to develop in field-scale plantings. The aim of this paper is to present the results of measurements, on the quality of internal and external environment, carried out during the cruise of the tall ship STS Fryderyk Chopin. The cruise took place between 16th and 30th September 2017 as part of the scientific seminar of the Warsaw University of Technology (WUT) on the Wave, addressed to students of the WTU. After leaving the port of Edinburgh, crossing the North Sea, the Danish straits, stops in Copenhagen and Kołobrzeg, the tall ship reached Szczecin after two weeks. The measurements carried out on the deck included the temperature and relative humidity of the indoor air in three cabins and the men’s bathroom. In two cabins, the CO2 concentration was measured additionally. The outdoor temperature, relative humidity and concentration of PM 1.0, PM 2.5 and PM 10 were also measured. The obtained results allowed to assess the quality of the internal environment in accordance with the standards and to analyze the effectiveness of the mechanical ventilation system. Measurements of particulate matter have shown significant differences between outdoor air quality in the open sea and in ports or near major shipping routes. It turned out that the impact of emissions from passing ships using diesel engines is clearly visible.

Due to the tall and large superstructures of cruise ships, the wind-induced vibration of frame structure on open decks cannot be neglected. This study investigated the wind-induced vibration of a typical frame structure on a cruise ship by using wind tunnel tests and numerical simulations. Wind tunnel tests were conducted to explore the simulation methods of the fluid–structure interaction (FSI). CFD simulations were performed to obtain the wind field data of the entire ship, which was utilized as an input for the open deck through the subdomain method. Subsequently, wind-induced vibration simulations of the guide rail frame structure on the open deck was carried out under various wind conditions. The results revealed that employing the turbulence model SST k-ω had a good agreement with the experimental data. The entire ship’s CFD results have a significant impact on the subdomain’s wind-induced vibration results. The vibration frequency of the guide rail frame structure was mainly concentrated between 0.8–10.1 Hz. The most unfavorable conditions appear at the wind attack angles of 0° and 120°. This study can provide some instructive insights for the prediction of wind-induced vibration and control of typical structures on the open decks of large cruise ships.

Zealand hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was developed using a modified bulk breeding method at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, AB. Zealand is an apically awn-letted, hollow-stemmed cultivar with a combination of high yield potential, tall plant type, large leaves, and early maturity. In three years of testing in the Western Bread Wheat Cooperative Registration Test during 2013–2015, Zealand exhibited grain yield similar to Glenn and Carberry and 5%–6% lower than Unity and AAC Viewfield, though this difference was not significant (p > 0.05). Zealand yielded 37% greater than the highest-yielding Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS) check, CDC Osler, in A-level testing at a certified organic farm. Zealand matured 1–4 d earlier and was taller than all the check cultivars, but exhibited lodging resistance better than Unity and similar to the other checks. The test weight of Zealand (79.1 kg hL−1) was lower than Glenn and similar to the other checks, while its seed mass was in the range of the check cultivars. Overall, Zealand was rated as resistant (R) to the prevalent races of leaf rust, moderately resistant (MR) to stripe rust and loose smut, intermediate (I) to stem rust and leaf spot, and moderately susceptible (MS) to common bunt and Fusarium head blight. Three years of end-use quality evaluation indicated that Zealand is acceptable for the CWRS class, with relatively few weaknesses. The tall plant type, large leaves, and early maturity render Zealand suitable for organic/high weed environments.

The paperwork is aiming to reveal the interpersonal relations particularities arose on gender diversity onboard maritime ships, considering the conclusions drawn from a set of training voyages carried out, annually, on the summer practical stage, onboard Mircea Tall Ship, owned by the “Mircea cel Batran” Naval Academy. The data were collected alongside 2003-2010 training voyage and the statistical data were collected from direct interviews with the male and female cadets, carried out during the 2010 summer voyage. The conclusion were very encouraging for the diversity management point of view, no significant gap or misalignment being observed alongside the study, in regard of interpersonal dynamic and the determinant factors in a seagoing crew. The study is really useful for the future research onset, in order to be continued with a in-depth analysis of the collected data with the reference not only to the interpersonal relations but to the individual perceptions and performance as well. The present research has been carried out by the authors within MENTORESS project - Maritime Education Network to Orient and Retain Women for Efficient Seagoing Services.

Endophytic fungi may reportedly improve summer persistence in tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.). The objective of this study was assessing whether endophytes contributed to better persistence in 2 climatically contrasting Italian locations (Sanluri, Mediterranean climate, 382 mm average rainfall; Lodi, subcontinental climate, 802 mm average rainfall). Twelve populations from Sardinia were evaluated for 4 years in each site with or without nitrogen application. The populations hosted either of 2 endophyte forms (long-conidia, Neotyphodium coenophialum; short-conidia, FaTG-2 group) and belonged to the European race of fescue (hosting N. coenophialum) or the Mediterranean race (hosting FaTG-2). Three European-race commercial varieties (hosting N. coenophialum) were included as controls. The evaluated material was present both in the endophyte-infected and the endophyte-free (after chemical treatment) status. Stand persistence was recorded at the end of each year. The effect of the endophyte presence on persistence was nil in the Mediterranean site and slightly positive in the subcontinental location. Populations of the 2 geographic races had contrasting behaviour in the 2 sites irrespective of their endophyte status. The Mediterranean-race populations persisted well in the Mediterranean environment but not in the subcontinental one, and the reverse occurred for the European-race germplasm (including the controls). The results suggest that Mediterranean conditions may be too extreme for any enhancement of persistence to be solely provided by the endophyte, and highlight the overwhelming importance of the physiological adaptation of the grass germplasm to target environment.

The migration of Ug99 variants of Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici is of concern to global wheat production (1). Seven races have been characterized in the Ug99 lineage (3), three of which occur in South Africa (4). During surveys of wheat fields for Ug99 in Zimbabwe and Mozambique in August and September 2010, high stem rust severities were found at Chiredzi, Chisumbanje, and Birchenough in Zimbabwe and at Rotanda in Mozambique. Stem rust was widespread in the lowlands (<800 m above sea level) of Zimbabwe and trace amounts were present in the mid-altitude areas. In Mozambique, stem rust was only observed at Rotanda (sample Moz1001). Collections from Chiredzi (samples Zim1004 and Zim1005), Chisumbanje (Zim1006), and Birchenough (Zim1009 and Zim1010) yielded viable urediniospores for infection studies. According to race analysis conducted on seedlings of the North American stem rust differential set (2) in a greenhouse at 18 to 25°C, Zim1005 and Zim1006 were typed as PTKST and Zim1004 and Zim1009 as TTKSF. Both TTKSF and PTKST were detected in the Zim1010 sample. Race analysis experiments were conducted three times. Urediniospores of isolate Moz1001 were not viable in infection studies, but yielded fungal DNA for simple sequence repeat (SSR) analysis. Using eight selected SSR primer combinations (4), all six isolates clustered within the Ug99 lineage. Isolates Zim1005, Zim1006, Zim1009, Zim1010, and Moz1001 and the stem rust control races TTKSF, TTKSK, and PTKST grouped into two main clusters, with Zim1009 and Zim1010 clustering together and sharing 88% similarity with the rest of the isolates. Zim1005 and Zim1006 were identical to TTKSF and TTKSK, respectively. Zim1004 shared 96% genetic similarity with the TTKSP control, with these two sharing 74% genetic similarity with the remaining isolates. The SSR data correlated with the infection data, except for Zim1004, which was typed as TTKSF but clustered close to TTKSP. Wheat cvs. SC Nduna, SC Shine, SC Stallion, SC Smart, Kana, Insiza, and Dande are predominant in Zimbabwe. Cv. SC Stallion and other unidentified cultivars were susceptible to P. graminis f. sp. tritici in the field in Zimbabwe. In Mozambique, the tall, local cv. Sitsonko was susceptible to P. graminis f. sp. tritici but no infections were observed on SC Nduna or SC Shine. The similarity in P. graminis f. sp. tritici races in Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Mozambique suggests that inoculum is exchanged within the region and explains the detection of race PTKST in South Africa in 2009. Trajectory models showed winds originating at Birchenough in October 2009, where stem rust was observed, passing directly over KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa within 48 to 72 h. Race PTKST was confirmed from collections in KwaZulu-Natal in November 2009 (4). The confirmation of Sr31 virulence in race PTKST in Zimbabwe is important because it provides new geographical records for an Ug99-related race and puts Southern African cultivars with 1B.1R resistance at risk. One of the most critical greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is carbon dioxide (CO2) due to its long-lasting and negative impact on climate change. The global atmospheric monthly mean CO2 concentration is currently greater than 410 ppm which has changed dramatically since the industrial era. To choose suitable climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies it is necessary to define carbon dioxide mass distribution and global atmospheric carbon dioxide mass. The available method to estimate the global atmospheric CO2 mass was proposed in 1980. In this study, to increase the accuracy of the available method, various observation platforms such as ground-based stations, ground-based tall towers, aircrafts, balloons, ships, and satellites are compared to define the best available observations, considering the temporal and spatial resolution. In the method proposed in this study, satellite observations (OCO2 data), from January 2019 to December 2021, are used to estimate atmospheric CO2 mass. The global atmospheric CO2 mass is estimated around 3.24 × 1015 kg in 2021. For the sake of comparison, global atmospheric CO2 mass was estimated by Fraser’s method using NOAA data for the mentioned study period. The proposed methodology in this study estimated slightly greater amounts of CO2 in comparison to Fraser’s method. This comparison resulted in 1.23% and 0.15% maximum and average difference, respectively, between the proposed method and Fraser’s method. The proposed method can be used to estimate the required capacity of systems for carbon capturing and can be applied to smaller districts to find the most critical locations in the world to plan for climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Recent scholarship on seafarers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century has tended to emphasise the mobility and diverse geographical origins of the global steamship workforce. This article, while sharing that perspective, cautions that a more nuanced view is called for, which also recognises the limits of their mobility. In doing so, it suggests, more broadly, that the period before the First World War cannot be thought of simply as an ‘Age of Acceleration’, but also needs to be seen as a period in which new kinds of limitation to mobility emerged. In the British colonial port of Durban, although there was in this period a vast increase in shipping activity, seamen were subject to an intense regime of restriction. An immigration bureaucracy initially created to exclude Indian immigrants, also shut out sailors of all nationalities and races. A particular precipitant of this policy was the hostility of Natal officials to the crews of ‘cattleboats’, ships bringing livestock to southern Africa from the Mediterranean, Argentina, Australia, the US and elsewhere. Across the globe, immigration controls in this period were in general less intense than they became after 1914, but in some places, such as Durban, new forms of limitation on mobility were being tried out. The article also highlights the vast worldwide system of labour documentation operated by the British merchant marine through Shipping Offices and Consuls in almost every significant port. Mobility in the British Empire was radically differentiated, with numerous centres of power making their own claims to control movement.

Research of the flora of some areas of the Central Russian forest-steppe shows that a number of plants has deviations from the main species characteristics. The fact that there is a continuous series of variations from individual to species level in nature has long been known for a long time (Darwin, 1991). The reasons and results of this are very different and unpredictable. The ability of plants to change their phenotype is genetically determined. The scope of intraspecific differentiation depends on many external causes. The intraspecific potential of plants reveals itself when ecological situation and geographical fragmentation modify. In result, populations which significantly differ from the main genotype are formed. The impact of new environmental conditions is shown in the examples of Genista tinctoria L., Achillea millefolium L., Salvia pratensis L. The Trifolium lupinaster or Lupinaster pentaphyllus is an example of the introduction of geographically distant genetically stable races. Some species can be represented by different morphobiotypes. For example, erect (haying) and lying (pasture) forms of Lotus corniculatus, Medicago falcata, Astragalus onobrychis. There are some transitional forms. Populations of tall and low growing Anemone sylvestris were observed. A pronounced manifestation of intraspecific diversity is the polychrome of flowers. It was found in рlants from different families: species of iris, Schrenka tulip (Tulipa suaveolens), lily of the Saranka (Lilium pilosiusculum) and others. The collection of the botanical garden for over 20 years contains garden forms of plants of natural flora, which appeared due to spontaneous new formations. These are variegated forms of Aegopodium podagraria and Galeobdolon luteum. The results of the introduction of species and intraspecific diversity of rare and economically valuable plants in the Botanical garden of the Voronezh state University are presented.

The breeding biology of Hill Mynah Gracula religiosa was studied in eight provinces of Thailand from 1991 to 1998 to evaluate how breeding behaviour has evolved to enhance reproductive success in the face of human interference. The northern race G. r. intermedia bred mostly during February to April whereas the southern race G. r. religiosa bred mostly later during April to June. Both races were cavity-nesting, non-excavating, monogamous and similar in breeding activities except for differences in body size. They nested at the bottom of deep cavities with a long entrance (mean 45 cm), in tall trees. Average nest height was 23 m. Nests were sometimes abandoned (10% of nests) during nest-building or incubation. Most Hill Mynahs (70%) had clutches of three eggs. Both parents shared incubation and feeding of young. The most detrimental factor to the reproductive success of this species was human theft of the young, rather than any natural factors. During 1991 to 1998, 80% of eggs laid were hatched, but 88% of all eggs hatched were lost before fledgling. Those illegally stolen by humans amounted to 61% of eggs hatched. Only 37 of 308 nestlings or 12% of eggs hatched survived to independence. In 1999, nests were experimentally guarded to prevent human interference, and fledgling success increased to 75% of eggs hatched. The remaining 25% of nestlings were lost to predators and unknown causes, close to the 27% lost to these causes in unguarded nests during 1991 to 1998. Although the breeding pattern of this species has evolved to promote survival of young, it does not seem to have evolved adaptations to human predation. The continuing decrease of wild Hill Mynah populations has prompted attempts at captive breeding. Data on breeding biology from this study should enhance its success.

Bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is the most widely grown crop in the world, and India is the second largest wheat producer after China. Introduction of input-responsive, semi-dwarf varieties set the foundation for the green revolution in the mid-1960s. To meet the future challenge of increasing food production with a shrinking land base, new varieties with higher yield potential and increased yield stability have to be developed by using the diverse genetic resource. The objective of this study was to evaluate genetic diversity in 74 wheat genotypes including released varieties in India occupying the pre-green revolution period (before 1965) and post-green revolution period (after 1965) and land races with microsatellite markers. SSRs represent a powerful tool to quantify genetic diversity in wheat. In total, 170 alleles were detected with an average of 3.3 alleles per locus. Overall, 24 rare alleles were present and 11 unique alleles were found in the studied landraces only. A positive correlation was found between the number of alleles and genetic diversity. Genetic relationships as determined by UPGMA (NTSYS-pc) and structure analyses grouped all modern wheat cultivars under one node. The traditional tall varieties released during the pre-green revolution era were clustered along with some of the landraces, indicating that they had possibly been developed through selection among the landraces. Diversity among the released varieties in the post-green revolution era has widened rather than narrowing down. Molecular variance analysis showed that variance was mainly distributed within (91.9%) rather than among (8.01%) the bread wheat varieties and landraces. The diversity obtained within the landraces proves them to be an important reservoir of biodiversity and source of novel alleles for use in breeding programs. Landraces such as MPG 62 and MPG 82 can be used for introgressing rare and unique alleles in the genetic background of high-yielding varieties.

Abstract. We describe the motivation, design, and execution of the Greenhouse gAs Uk and Global Emissions (GAUGE) project. The overarching scientific objective of GAUGE was to use atmospheric data to estimate the magnitude, distribution, and uncertainty of the UK greenhouse gas (GHG, defined here as CO2, CH4, and N2O) budget, 2013–2015. To address this objective, we established a multi-year and interlinked measurement and data analysis programme, building on an established tall-tower GHG measurement network. The calibrated measurement network comprises ground-based, airborne, ship-borne, balloon-borne, and space-borne GHG sensors. Our choice of measurement technologies and measurement locations reflects the heterogeneity of UK GHG sources, which range from small point sources such as landfills to large, diffuse sources such as agriculture. Atmospheric mole fraction data collected at the tall towers and on the ships provide information on sub-continental fluxes, representing the backbone to the GAUGE network. Additional spatial and temporal details of GHG fluxes over East Anglia were inferred from data collected by a regional network. Data collected during aircraft flights were used to study the transport of GHGs on local and regional scales. We purposely integrated new sensor and platform technologies into the GAUGE network, allowing us to lay the foundations of a strengthened UK capability to verify national GHG emissions beyond the project lifetime. For example, current satellites provide sparse and seasonally uneven sampling over the UK mainly because of its geographical size and cloud cover. This situation will improve with new and future satellite instruments, e.g. measurements of CH4 from the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) aboard Sentinel-5P. We use global, nested, and regional atmospheric transport models and inverse methods to infer geographically resolved CO2 and CH4 fluxes. This multi-model approach allows us to study model spread in a posteriori flux estimates. These models are used to determine the relative importance of different measurements to infer the UK GHG budget. Attributing observed GHG variations to specific sources is a major challenge. Within a UK-wide spatial context we used two approaches: (1) Δ14CO2 and other relevant isotopologues (e.g. δ13CCH4) from collected air samples to quantify the contribution from fossil fuel combustion and other sources, and (2) geographical separation of individual sources, e.g. agriculture, using a high-density measurement network. Neither of these represents a definitive approach, but they will provide invaluable information about GHG source attribution when they are adopted as part of a more comprehensive, long-term national GHG measurement programme. We also conducted a number of case studies, including an instrumented landfill experiment that provided a test bed for new technologies and flux estimation methods. We anticipate that results from the GAUGE project will help inform other countries on how to use atmospheric data to quantify their nationally determined contributions to the Paris Agreement.

Many research did not allude to the relevance of learning theory in learning. After graduating, they less develop or linking learning theory with the teaching profession. That condition makes learning essence should be strengthened to become weak or even disappear.This research aims to describe the compatibility when applying outdoor study environment subjects with the psychological theories of intelligence and meaningful learning theory in senior high school. This research used a qualitative methodology with the type of descriptive exploitative research. Data sources are students and geography teachers. The process of collecting data uses the method of observation and interviews. Data were analyzed with the 6 Cresswell's qualitative analyzing steps. The results show that the application of outdoor study is suitable both the psychological theories of intelligence and meaningful learning. The compatibility is reflected in the learning activities, there are: before, during, and after working in the outdoor. The teacher's ability to implement the basis of psychological theories of intelligence and meaningful learning makes learning more easily understood and meaningful for students.

The Sea Education Association (SEA) has an international reputation for creating powerful learning experiences in semester-long programs that involve conducting scientific research while sailing tall ships. To what extent, how and why these experiences occur was studied through interviews, extant data analysis, and participant observation of the SEA Semester program Marine Biodiversity and Conservation. Themes consistent with past studies of powerful learning emerged, for example, authenticity, openness, relationships with others, and intense engagement, while outcomes continued to be highly individual. Relationships among these themes point toward complexity, design, and systemic design and suggest seeds of a theory of powerful learning systems.

In rotating machinery, rolling elements are the key members of the rolling element bearing (REB), which has tremendous application in automobiles, aerospace, ships, machinery apparatuses, and many more industrial sectors. Bearings are a significant source of various non-linear parameters which strongly affect the whole system. In the last two decades, tremendous research and approaches have been developed, considering the different parameters and faultiness for the proper understanding of the system’s non-linear behavior. This research paper summarizes the literature review on bearing fault diagnosis with localized and distributed defects for rolling element bearings with various non-linear parameters. Artificially-generated defects on the bearing races provides the vibration analysis of the system. These factors like radial clearance, unbalanced force, preload, misalignment, etc. are also considered defects in bearings. Moreover, the literature highlights some significant gaps that should be examined for future research in the condition monitoring of the mechanism.

In this paper we argue that extant research in event studies on volunteering has predominantly been conducted through disembodied managerial lenses using formulaic conceptual frames. This has resulted in the neglect of more phenomenological approaches which explore volunteers’ lived experiences. Using the example of the 2018 Tall Ships festival in the provincial North East English city of Sunderland, we draw on embodiment theory to fill this gap in event management research. Utilising in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 31 local volunteers, our main findings are two-fold. First, they highlight the complexities and fluidity of local volunteers’ lived experiences of the festival which reflect a multitude of interrelated elements that are corporeal, emotional, and multisensory. Second, these embodied experiences, combined with knowledge of self and place, create fresh, vivid, and subjective meanings which collapse the past, present and future of post-industrial places riddled by economic decline. Our focus on the volunteer experience in the medium term after the event has occurred represents a distinctive timeline as it provides insights into how volunteers interpret, remember, and reconfigure their experience beyond initial euphoria and before long-term nostalgia.
