Abstract (sommario):
Abstract: Rather than attempting to prevent all overdoses, the Prescription Pill Dispenser Vial (RPPDV) aims to prevent accidental overdoses by controlling how many pills a user can access within a twenty-four hour period. The RPPDV is much like a traditional pill vial. The body is similar to a conventional pill vial; however, it is modified to prevent the cap's opening without a special screw. The cap is heavily modified and uses a CR2032 or CR2025 coin cell battery to power a gate and the unlocking of the pill cap. The RPPDV works first when the user clicks the red button on the cap of the RPPDV, which opens the pill gate and opens space into a pill container section. This section is large enough for only one pill (or two if multiple pills are required simultaneously). Once a tablet has entered the pill container section, the button must be pressed again to close the pill gate. The user cannot open the lid to the pill container section until the pill gate is closed (see Fig 1.4.1). The RPPDV is similar to an escrow service, with the pill holder section acting as a middleman. The size of the pill holder container prevents access to multiple pills at the same time. The number of times the user presses the button is recorded and timed with a 555 timer set for twenty-four hours. For example, if a drug has a maximum dose of three pills per day, the button could be capped at four cycles or eight total pushes (to allow a grace cycle if a tablet is broken or stuck). Similarly, the gate cannot be opened unless the lid to the pill container section is closed. The production price of the RPPDV is significantly higher than a traditional pill vial and can get higher depending on the additional features added to the RPPDV. The necessary components to function include CR2032 or CR2025 lithium batteries, a 555 timer, and a coin battery holder, along with plastic and metal molds. The base model alone produces an estimated average cost per unit of $1.33 USD (see Fig 4.2.1). Additional features include adding a Bluetooth Low Energy (Bluetooth LE) component to customize the number of unlocks per day and RFIDs for storage and tracking. Prices vary depending on the specifications of the RPPDV.

Abstract (sommario):
The manosphere is a collection of antifeminist men's groups. They are united by their enthusiasm for Darwinian evolution, especially around issues of sex differences. This research examines U.S. and English-speaking manosphere appropriations of evolutionary science from three angles. Firstly, it assesses the scientific literacy of manospherians with a survey, revealing relatively high levels of college science education and scientific literacy. Secondly, through qualitative discourse analysis, it thoroughly reviews the appropriations of evolutionary science found in the manosphere. Overall, manospherians tend to disproportionately apply biological theories to women, making for a uniform and strongly deterministic view of female behavior. Moreover, they also create their own evolutionary hypotheses to make sense of the world through a Darwinian lens. Yet, appropriations of evolutionary science vary between manosphere communities, depending on their political aims and narratives. Running through all these appropriations however is a presence of misogynistic biases, as well as exaggeration and simplification of academic research results. To understand this phenomenon better, this work finally explores scientific knowledge circulation and acquisition in the manosphere

The emergency contraceptive pill (EC) is a method of the emergency contraception that prevents pregnancy after sexual intercourse. It is also known as the âpost coital pillâ and contains high dose progestin-hormone. The EC can be taken immediately or up to five days after sex if the woman did not use birth control, in cases of suspected birth control failure, or if she was forced to have sex. To describe the level of knowledge and use of EC by users of the Medicine Attendance Service (SAC FARMA) in a network of community pharmacies placed in Fortaleza, CearÃ. In the months October (2008) to May (2009), after each enquiry about the âpost coital pillâ, women who were using or intended to use this pill were invited to participate in a survey on the use of emergency contraception by the application of a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed with the statistical program SPSS, version 15.0. Of the 54 women interviewed, the majority were aged between 23 and 29 years (44.4%), were single (66.7%) and resident in the State of Cearà (66.7%). (48.1%) had income between 1 and 3 minimum wages, 50,0% higher secondary education and 42.6% had higher education.). Almost all (92,6%) wished to use or have used EC without guidance/prescription and of these the majority (54%) obtained some information about EC through friends and family. More than half (64.8%) said it was not their first time of use, and 82% reported using EC once or twice previously. With respect to knowledge about the risk of loss of effectiveness if the use is repetitive, the majority (64%) were unaware of this information. Most (72%) reported no adverse reaction or other complaints. Also, 98.1% of interviewed reported that they knew other method of contraception, being the condom the most widely known (92.6%) and used (84%). One of the main reasons to justify the use of EC was unprotected sex (53.7%). When asked for how long after intercourse the method can be used, most answered within 72 hours (56.3%), 25% did not respond and 65.6% reported that "post coital pill" has no abortive effect. Most of the women studied wanted to use the EC without prescription and obtained information about EC pill from friends and family. Moreover most women had no knowledge about the risk of reduced effectiveness if the use is repetitive. These findings are of concern as they indicate the possibility of misuse of the EC given its easy access in pharmacies.

Abstract (sommario):
Augered Cast-In-Place (ACIP) Piles are used in areas were the loading from a superstructure exceeds the soil bearing capacity for usage of a shallow foundation. In Northwest Florida and along the Gulf Coast, ACIP piles are often utilized as foundation alternatives for multi-story condominium projects. Data from 25 compression load tests at 13 different project sites in Florida and Alabama were analyzed to determine their individual relationships between anticipated and determined compression load capacity. The anticipated capacity of the ACIP pile is routinely overestimated due to uncertainties involved with the process of estimating the compressive capacity and procedures of placing the piles; therefore, larger diameter and deeper piles are often used to offset this lack of understanding. The findings established in this study will provide a better empirical relationship between predicted behaviors and actual behaviors of ACIP piles in cohesionless soils. These conclusions will provide the engineer with a better understanding of ACIP pile behaviors and provide a more feasible approach to more accurately determine the pile-soil interaction in mostly cohesionless soils.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis constitutes a contribution by a systemic approach to find ways of fuel cell systems integration to form simple, effective and reliable electro generators. Indeed, the study proposes a development methodology of control and on-line energy management of hybrid systems having a fuel cell as main source and as element of storage of supercondensers. The first phase of the study tried to represent and to characterize the electric behaviour, at once static and dynamic of the fuel cell generator under variable and varied requests. This allowed to justify the use of an assistance to palliate the fuel cell generator limits. The introduction of an intermediate storage organ can be so realized by a significant number of different architectures, the analysis of their electric behaviour led to the choice of the study structures. By leaning on this choice, the second stage brought to build command algorithms and energy management. Two methods were used. The first one founded on the macroscopic energy representation REM. She allowed to highlight the explicit and implicit freedom degrees of both structures. The regulation chains identification acting on the objectives and the constraints of 2 systems facilitated the development of command structures based on the inversion rules REM. Also passivity based control was envisaged for the stability guarantees which it brings intrinsically. Through a different algorithm, the same flexibility of regulation was able to be assured. Besides, a management strategy of saturations and limits of the system was set up, to pilot the extreme functionings. An important part of the work has consisted in setting up a test bench - representative of considered hybrid fuel cell system. Thanks to this experimental means, allowed to test the various architectures of the system, but also fuel cell model and control laws developed during the thesis have been validated

Abstract (sommario):
Following a stem cell or solid organ transplant immunosuppressed patients have an increased risk of developing opportunistic infections such as invasive aspergillosis (IA), which is mainly caused by the most prevalent airborne mold, Aspergillus fumigatus. The diagnosis and therapy of IA have become increasingly relevant in recent years, making it essential to understand the mechanisms of the immune system. The infection generally spreads from the lung. Dendritic cells (DCs), whose major task is to activate T-lymphocytes, were therefore investigated for their ability to influence the immune system. 40-0-[2-Hydroxy-ethyl]rapamycin (RAD), a novel immunosuppressive drug, was analysed for its in vitro influence on the interaction of neutrophils and monocyte-derived dendritic cells (moDCs) with the pathogenic mould, A. fumigatus. RAD acts by bonding with the cytosolic FK506 binding protein (FKBP12) causing inhibition of the lipid kinase mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) which in turn results in the repression of T-cell activation. It is clinically used to prevent graft-versus-host disease or the rejection of solid organ and bone marrow transplants. RAD-treatment significantly decreased the oxidative burst of neutrophils after confrontation with A. fumigatus. moDCs were derived from monocytes through culture with granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor and interleukin-4 in the presence or absence of 10 nM RAD. Although there was no difference in the expression of the surface markers CD1a+, CD14- and HLA-DR+, RAD had various modulating effects on the immune function of moDCs. It reduced the expression of innate immunity receptors (TLR4 and dectin-1) and impaired the maturation capacity of moDCs as was observed in the reduction of co-stimulatory factors (CD40, CD83 and CD86). CD40 remained significantly reduced even after treatment with A. fumigatus, while CD83 only exhibit a downstream trend and CD86 did not stay reduced. RAD treatment significantly reduced the cytokine expression levels of IL-12, TNF-α, and CCL20 after 6 h stimulation of the moDCs with the mold. This was to some extent confirmed at protein level, where the same cytokines as well as IL-10 were significantly reduced in RAD-treated moDCs by comparison with reference cells after 12 h of stimulation with A. fumigatus. The phagocytosis and binding rate of dextran beads and conidia as well as the damage to A. fumigatus germ tubes were significantly reduced in DCs treated with the agent. It cannot be determined for certain whether moDCs under RAD-treatment were also less able to activate CD8+-Tlymphocytes because of the wide donor related discrepancies that they displayed. A home-made RNA microarray, which included genes coding for cytokines and receptors of immune cells, was used to identify several differentially regulated genes after confrontation with A. fumigatus. Furthermore, a comparison between monocyte-derived dendritic cells (moDCs) and myeloid dendritic cells (mDCs) was performed, revealing that only a few genes were regulated more than 2-fold and that fewer of these genes occured in mDCs than in moDCs. Among them were genes, such as the cytokines IL-1β, IL-8, CXCL2, CCL3, CCL4 and CCL20, the immune receptor PTX3 and the transcription factor Nf-κB. Finally, it was investigated whether the knock-down of the CXCL10-gene in moDCs potentially impaired the response of the immune cells to A. fumigatus. It is proven that the lack of CXCL10 results in a higher risk of IA. However, there was no difference in the cytokine production or the expression of co-stimulatory factors in control moDCs compared to moDCs treated with CXCL10 siRNA. In conclusion, important genes which had been up-regulated after confrontation with A. fumigatus in moDCs and mDCs, were successfully identified. Moreover, treatment with RAD during the generation of moDCs had a considerable effect on the ability of these cells to kill A. fumigatus and modulate the immune response. RAD treatment could thus increase the patient's risk of contracting invasive aspergillosis regardless of the drug's capacity to inhibit T-cell activation

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractOne of the regions of Europe where archaeological lakeshore sites or so-called pile-dwellings are found is the tripoint of Albania, Greece and North Macedonia, which includes dozens of known lakeshore sites on and in different lakes. One of the aims of the ERC Synergy Project EXPLO is the systematic underwater archaeological investigation of key pile-dwelling sites in this region. Currently, more than a dozen prehistoric lake- or river shore sites from the Neolithic and the Bronze and Iron Ages are known in the area surrounding the lakes of Ohrid, Prespa and Maliq (Fig. 5.1) (Naumov in Plattform 23:10–20, 2016; Andoni et al. in New Archaeological Discoveries in the Albanian Regions. Procedings of the International Conference, Tirana 30–31 January 2017. Botimet Albanologjike, Tirana, pp 123–140, 2017; Oberweiler et al. in Bulletin Archéologique Des Écoles Françaises à L’étranger 2020; Lera et al. in Bulletin archéologique des Écoles françaises à l’étranger 2020). Several of these sites still show waterlogged archaeological layers, in which organic matter and wooden construction elements are well preserved. However, only a few are systematically investigated and the number of absolute dates for most of the sites is still rather low. This paper summarises the recent archaeological fieldwork conducted by the University of Bern in partnership with the Museum of Ohrid and the Center for Prehistoric Research in Skopje on the site Ploča Mičov Grad in North Macedonia based on the publications of Hafner et al. (J Archaeol Sci Rep 38, 2021) and Reich et al. (J Archaeol Sci Rep 39, 2021) as well as new preliminary results of the ongoing research. We focus on ongoing research that has provided the first absolute chronologies of Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements at Lake Ohrid (Hafner et al. J Archaeol Sci Rep 38, 2021). The main methodology relies on both dendrochronological and radiocarbon datings. This high precision dating, in combination with studies of the material culture, contributes to a better chronological understanding of the prehistory of the surrounding basins and the southwestern Balkans in general.

Abstract (sommario):
This article presents the concept of blue pill, a stealth hypervisor-based rootkit, that was introduced by Joanna Rutkowska in 2006. The blue pill is a malicious thin hypervisor-based rootkit that takes control of the victim machine. Furthermore, as the blue pill does not run under the operating system context, the blue pill is very difficult to detect easily. The red pill is the competing concept (i.e., a forensics software that runs on the inspected machine and detects the existence of malicious hypervisor or blue pill). The concept of attestation of a host ensuring that no hypervisor is running was first introduced by Kennel and Jamieson in 2002. Modern advances in hypervisor technology and hardware-assisted virtualization enables more stealth and detection methods. This article presents all the recent innovation in stealth blue pills and forensics red pills.

Abstract (sommario):
This project developed a three-dimensional (3D) seepage model to evaluate efficiency of 84 relief wells and factors of safety (FoS) along the Profit Island vicinity levee (PIVL), north of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The PIVL model was built based on US Geological Survey MODFLOW-USG. Moreover, a 3D seepage model of RocScience RS3 was also built for a specific study of relief well experiments conducted by the US Army Corps of Engineers in the 1930s and 1940s. The PIVL model was calibrated with measured piezometric head data and relief well flow rates in 1997. Six flood scenarios were conducted: the extreme flood (56 feet), design flood (52.4 feet), 1997 flood (50 feet), 2008 flood (49.22 feet), 2017 flood (45.55 feet), and 2018 flood (49.1 feet). The modeling results show that FoS are all above 1.5 given relief wells at the 1997 design condition. FoS calculated by the blanket theory are more conservative than those by the PIVL model because designed discharge rates were not observed in the field. In comparison with measured flow rates in 2008, the PIVL modeling result indicates potential clogging at many relief wells. New piezometric data and well discharge data are recommended to re-evaluate factors of safety.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Transportation agencies in northern environments spend a considerable amount of their budget on salt for winter operations. For example, in the state of Indiana, there are approximately 120 salt storage facilities distributed throughout the state and the state expends between 30 M USD and 60 M USD on inventory and delivery each year. Historical techniques of relying on visual estimates of salt stockpiles can be inaccurate and unhelpful for managing the supply chain during the winter or planning for re-supply during the summer months. This project report describes the implementation of a portable and permanent LiDAR system that can be used to inventory indoor stockpiles of salt in under 15 min and describes how this system has been deployed over 300 times at over 120 facilities. A quick and easy accuracy test, based on the conservation of volume, was used to provide an independent check on the system performance by repositioning portions of the salt pile. Those tests indicated stockpile volumes can be estimated with an accuracy of 1%–3% of indicated stockpile volumes. The report concludes by discussing how this technology can be permanently installed for systematic monitoring throughout the year.
