Christopher Langford James (1952 – 2008) was a Zimbabwean-born composer, orchestrator and pianist, whose style conflated traditional European musical textures with southern African instrumentation, rhythms, and harmonies. His compositions include works such as Four Portraits for Pianoforte in Four Movements (1982), Songs of Lamentation and Remonstration (1985), Images of Africa (1987), and Paradise Regained (1999). While my research on James’s life and music has uncovered multiple angles for critical inquiry, the dominant narrative that emerged from interviews with his family, and discussions with colleagues, was that of mental illness. This article argues that mental illness – while being a very real condition experienced by James – can simultaneously be understood as doing persona work. Through the intersecting frameworks of persona studies and life writing, this article critically interrogates the understanding of stereotypical concepts of mental illness within the construct of what Kim Barbour terms ‘artistness’. Through critical examination of how mental illness is understood and interpreted as a central construction of artistness, this article speaks to the complexity of the construction of James’s biography, and how the narrative performance of James’s mental illness can be understood within the framework of persona studies.

Abstract Both William James and Gilles Deleuze labeled their philosophies "radical empiricism." In this context, this essay explores the similarities and differences between James's radical empiricism (particularly as it is present early inches Principles of Psychology) and Deleuze's "transcendental empiricism" (particularly as set forth in The Logic of Sense). These accounts then inform a view of philosophy understood as a creative art. This art demands flexible habits--what James termed "genius"--in a changing world. Accordingly, radically empirical accounts of creativity and genius are sketched.

It is a testimony to the genius of William James that scarce a lecture on attention passes without the speaker quoting him on the subject. This has, however, also been a cause for concern: do we really understand any more about this amorphous topic now, than we did when James wrote Principles of Psychology? It might occur to more jaundiced reviewers that the fact that James abandoned psychology completely after finishing this great book implies that he was beaten by the subject of attention, for, in many senses, the study of attention is at the very heart of the science of psychology. And if the founding genius of psychology could not crack the code of attention, is there any hope for the rest of us?

The scientific and organizational activities of the worldwide known scientist in the field of molecular biology James Dewey Watson were described in this article. 55 years ago James Watson and Francis Crick made one of the key discoveries of the twentieth century. They have found that DNA has a double helix structure. This discovery was based on the X-rays patterns obtained by Maurice Wilkson and Rosalind Franklin. Subsequently, this DNA model had been proved, and J. Watson and F. Crick were awarded with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1962. Since, our knowledge of the main molecule of life has been greatly expanded. A significant flowering of molecular genetics has began: synthesis of RNA and DNA in vitro, decoding of genetic code, recombinant DNA technology, genetic engineering, sequencing of genomes and post genomic technologies. James Watson is one of the authors of the cell biology classic textbook “Molecular Biology of the Cell”. In addition, he has developed the current areas of molecular biology such as molecular oncology and molecular neurobiology. Today genomes of different animals and humans have been decoded and the functions of many genes have been determined. But at present still unknown how the DNA starts and how it affects the work of the organs and the organism as a system. Near the onset of his illustrious career, the psychologist William James proposed a theory of how individual genius can exert a unique and enduring causal impact on the history of civilization. After first attacking the prevailing view that sociocultural determinism rendered individual creators and leaders mere epiphenomena, James argued that the causal effect of the genius paralleled that of the spontaneous variation or mutation in the theory of evolution by natural selection. Although his specific arguments suffer severe problems even from the standpoint of his own theory, current psychological research on creativity and genius indicate how his basic thesis can be revised and updated with respect to creative genius. This revision and updating concentrates specifically on what is known about the behavioral productivity, thinking processes and procedures, personality characteristics, and early developmental experiences in highly creative individuals. These modern enhancements then lead to the integrated discussion of Jamesian free will and the causal agency of the creative genius. The net result is a revitalized theory of how it even becomes possible for single individuals to make creative choices that not only may cause changes in their own lives, but also alter the course of world history.

The purpose of this essay was to investigate how the James Bond films portray the beauty ideals for women during a 40-year period by looking at each woman from four different categories. The study used three Bond films, which were: The Man with the Golden gun from 1974, Goldeneye from 1995 and lastly Skyfall from 2012. By using the semiotic theory with film analysis and Yvonne Hirdmans genus theories the main research question was: How has the contemporary beauty ideals for women reflected on the women’s characters in the James Bond films?The analysis showed that the women in the first movie mostly were portrayed with thin waists with a bigger bust area and with natural faces that had little makeup. The ideal around that time was that the focus on a woman’s body should be the breasts and that came across in the movie. In the other two movies the women’s body types hadn’t changed from the first movie, and the ideals around that time were those of a small body in general. The clothes followed the ideals of the second and third feminist waves that wanted that women should be able to wear whatever she wants which the two later movies showed. The second feminist wave were what started the thesis that women could do and work with the same things as men did. This was seen in the movies as the women worked as secretaries and agents and most of them could handle a weapon which is historically seen as a man’s job.

Ce travail a pour pour but d’étudier les œuvres de Raymond Roussel (1877-1933) et de James Joyce (1882-1941). Il consiste à mettre ces auteurs en regard l’un de l’autre, en vue de l’éclairage réciproque de leurs textes, souvent qualifiés d’illisibles. Une pareille étude n’a pas encore été menée à ce jour, bien que le rapprochement de ces écrivains semble d’ores et déjà aller de soi : on range conjointement Joyce et Roussel auprès de Stéphane Mallarmé, quand on n’apparente pas leur usage du langage à celui du schizophrène Louis Wolfson. Il s’agit d’établir quelles sont les stratégies d’écriture propres à Joyce et à Roussel, de confronter l’opacité joycienne, combien problématique, à la difficile transparence – l’apparente clarté – dont témoigne l’œuvre de Roussel. L’étude comparative de Joyce et Roussel ne saurait faire l’économie d’une réflexion sur la place occupée par le commentaire au sein de l’œuvre. Cette opération revient à questionner l’autorité critique de Joyce et de Roussel. Ces auteurs produisent des textes autonomes, lesquels parlent essentiellement d’eux-mêmes. Tout en étant gros de leur projet, ils constituent leur propre objet. L’analogie avec la machine s’impose irrésistiblement. Ces manières de machines célibataires (Michel Carrouges) sont également des œuvres ouvertes (Umberto Eco). L’imaginaire des machines relie Joyce et Roussel tout en les intégrant à un espace plus vaste comprenant aussi bien Jules Verne que Marcel Duchamp. Les machines permettent d’envisager l’écriture de Joyce et de Roussel en termes de surface et de profondeur, mais elles mettent également en lumière les paradoxes du manifeste et du caché
This thesis aims to examine the writings of Raymond Roussel (1877-1933) and of James Joyce (1882-1941). Both writers are to be put into comparison so as to shed a reciprocal light upon one another’s works, which are often deemed illegible. Such a study has not yet been carried, although connecting the two writers seems already self-evident : Joyce and Roussel are simultaneously ranked beside Stéphane Mallarmé, when their use of language is not linked with that of schizophrenic Louis Wolfson. What is at stake is to define Joyce and Roussel’s writing strategies, to bring face to face Joyce’s opacity - with all the issues it entails - and the problematic transparency - the seeming clarity - displayed by Roussel’s work. The comparative study of Joyce and Roussel could not dispense with a pondering over the weight of commentary deriving from both canons. This amounts to questionning Joyce’s and Roussel’s authority in the field of criticism.These authors generate autonomous texts which essentially deal with themselves. While fortified by their project, they are fed on their own object. An analogy to the machine seems necessary and compelling. These bachelor machines (Michel Carrouges) are also open works (Umberto Eco). The machine imagination binds Joyce and Roussel while incorporating them into a wider space that comprises Jules Verne as well as Marcel Duchamp. Machines thus make it possible to consider Joyce and Roussel’s writings in terms of surface and depth, but they also highlight the paradoxes of the manifest and of the hidden

Denna uppsats utreder två frågeställningar rörande män och manlighet inom fiktion. Syftet med denna text är att försöka få en insikt i hur män porträtteras inom film och skönlitteratur, samt hur associationer påverkar gymnasielevers uppfattning av innebörden av att vara man. Skönlitteratur och film som inkluderar karaktärerna Odysseus, Batman, James Bond och Sherlock Holmes samt teoretisk litteratur med fokus på både genus och didaktik används för att besvara frågeställningarna. Dessutom används ett kvantitativt frågeformulär för att få in information om gymnasieelevers syn på män och manlighet. En av slutsatserna som kan dras utifrån undersökningsresultatet är att ideal och egenskaper som användes för att skapa fiktiva manliga karaktärer i antikens Grekland fortfarande är närvarande i moderna fiktiva karaktärer. En annan slutsats är att populärkulturen har en stor inverkan på vilka associationer till män och manlighet som människor har.

Uppsatsen är en redogörelse för en dekonstruktivistisk läsning av Karin Boyes första prosaverk Astarte (1931), utifrån James L. Calderwoods teori om creative uncreation i det poetiska skapandet. Med denna blick på texten så som varande en akt av nedmontering och med utgångspunkt i Judith Butlers teori om könets performativitet, framträder i läsningen av Boyes roman en strävan efter att plocka isär samhälleliga (van)föreställningar och schabloner gällande konsten, poesin, modet osv. i allmänhet och kvinnan, i synnerhet. Analysen är strukturerad efter Calderwoods idé om att det poetiska skapandet kan vara en rörelse från ingenting mot ett någonting eller en rörelse från någonting mot ett ingenting, och är således ordnad i två delar: en som behandlar creation, skapandet av föreställningar, och en rörande creative uncreation, nedmonterandet av dessa. I slutdiskussionen aktualiseras två essäer av Boye, ”Dagdrömmeriet som livsåskådning” och ”Språket bortom logiken”. Boyes tankar kring konst och litteratur som stelnad i konvention och hennes längtan efter ett nytt språk som kan söka sig bortom vedertagna symboler och tecken, sätts här i samband med resultaten för den dekonstruktivistiska läsningen av romanen. Uppsatsen innehåller även en kort redogörelse för Astartes mottagande vid dess utgivning och synen på romanen i tidigare forskning.

Syftet med föreliggande studie är att utifrån ett individperspektiv erhålla djupare förståelse och ökad insikt inom ramen för mäns identitetskapande på en kvinnodominerad arbetsplats. Studien utgick från en kvalitativ metod med en tematisk, semistrukturerad intervjuguide. Urvalet utgjordes av fyra män som jobbar på ett sjukhus i Halmstad. Resultatet visar att männens identitet är flyktig och att den är situationsbunden. Resultatet påvisar även hur en identitet är bunden till olika slags sociala relationer.Resultatet analyseras utifrån George Herbert Mead, Sigmund Freud, Erwig Goffman, William James samt Gregory Stone. Analysen berör aspekterna; maskulin identitet, rollskiftningar samt vad en identitet innebär.

This chapter focuses on the creativity in the UK, which manifests itself from the street music of Tottenham to the glamour of the Oscars and the James Bond movies. It focuses on the glittering successes of UK creativity as symbols of a much broader creative and inventive culture that make a muscular contribution to the UK's GDP, defy the usual rules of trading relations, and offer great hope for a rebooted UK. It also recounts how creativity in the shape of live performances and museum exhibitions was crushed by Covid-19, lockdown, and social distancing. The chapter highlights resilience as the glory of UK creativity, citing actor Bertie Carvel who took the initiative and organised a lockdown theatrical festival broadcast on Radio 3 in the summer of 2020. It looks at gaming, with its embrace of artifical intelligence, as a potent symbol of largely unseen achievements, such as the Google-owned machine 'AlphaGo.'

Abstract The few geologists who have read Robert Hooke’s Discourse of Earthquakes have been astonished by his almost clairvoyant postulations concerning the formation of geomorphological features, the origin and usefulness of fossils, biological evolution, and all the dynamic changes that constantly take place on this planet. Hooke’s ideas have been shown to reach beyond those of his contemporary, the Dane Nicholas Steno (1638-1686), who is widely hailed as a founder of geology. There is also evidence that James Hutton (1726-1797), who had some knowledge of Hooke’s hypothesis of the terraqueous globe, incorporated much of what Hooke pronounced into his own theory, a theory that laid the foundation of modern geology. Hooke was therefore important in the history of Earth science, as he was in the development of many other fields of scientific and technological endeavour. The purpose of this volume is not to engage in a search for Hutton’s precursors but to present the ideas of Robert Hooke concerning the Earth and to analyze them in light of the prevailing knowledge in the 17th century, placing the man in historical context and revealing his vital role in the development of the science of geology.

Such an anxious scrutiny is the project of the maturely resourceful James in rereading, revising, and prefacing; but it is also—and in their case the scrutiny is unrewarded—what Roderick Hudson and Rowland Mallet are doomed to in the novel itself. The fictional young sculptor’s misfortune in the book is the extinction of his relation with his work, his loss of that ‘continuity of an artist’s endeavour’ (LC ii. 1039-40) which the real resuming James notes as extant in himself.

William James offered several resources that a moral apologist can deploy. James saw it as irrational to embrace a rule of reasoning that precludes finding truth that’s really there to be found. He argued that the category of moral regret is a bad fit with a naturalistic worldview. Like other philosophers we’ve considered, his was an expansive empiricism that included considering the evidential value of relational, aesthetic, and ethical deliverances. Arthur Balfour similarly recognized the moral deficiencies of naturalism, though, more so than James, he thought reconcilable the religious and metaphysical accounts of theism. Balfour was particularly intent on underscoring the ways in which deflationary analyses of moral values and duties are better at explaining them away than actually explaining them. He didn’t think the moral argument was best thought of as a deduction; rather, he saw it as something closer to an inductive or abductive approach.
