Dhulipalla, Ajay Krishna. "Effect of surface finish and hard coatings on scuffing of steel discs". Thesis, Cardiff University, 2006. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/56106/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The principal purpose of the work described in this thesis was to develop an insight into the scuffing performance of steel discs used to simulate gear tooth contacts under severe conditions of load, sliding and high temperature. Different surface conditions of the discs such as ground, superfinished, ground/hard-coated, and superfinished/ hard-coated were investigated in various combinations and at sliding speeds of up to 16 m/s in order to obtain an understanding of the possible beneficial effect of improved surface finish and the application of hard coatings on scuffing performance under the severe conditions experienced in an aerospace transmission such as a helicopter main rotor gearbox. The lubricant used in all tests was an oil commonly used in aerospace transmissions. It was found that the diamond-like coating (DLC) investigated in this work had the effect of markedly improving the scuffing resistance of the hardened steel substrate. In tests using the ground/coated samples, for example, it was not found possible to produce scuffing within the load and temperature limits of the test rig used (2.0 GPa maximum Hertzian contact pressure or 300 C maximum disc bulk temperature) even at the high sliding speed of 16 m/s. In addition to improving scuffing resistance it was found that the effect of the hard coating was to reduce friction and operating temperatures for a given load/speed combination. Superfinishing of the steel discs also led to a reduction in friction, but did not produce a significant improvement in scuffing resistance. It was found that the combination of ground/hard-coated discs running against ground/uncoated discs produced a remarkable behaviour of the discs' bulk temperatures, which suggests that the hard coating acts as a thermal barrier. Micro-elastohydrodynamic lubrication (micro-EHL) analyses were conducted using surface profiles of discs used in the experimental work. These theoretical simulations demonstrated the very severe lubrication conditions which are present in the experiments. Pressure ripples far in excess of the calculated Hertzian pressure are predicted, and the films generated by hydrodynamic action are extremely thin. Under the most severe conditions transitory direct "dry" contact is predicted.

Abstract (sommario):
The effect of surface finish on fatigue limit of two types of austenitic stainless steels (AISI 304L and AISI 316L) has been investigated. Fatigue specimens having two different surface conditions were obtained by changing the final cutting condition; annealing was performed to separate the residual stress effects from surface roughness. Electropolished samples were tested as a reference for each material. A generic mechanistic model for short fatigue crack propagation proposed by Navarroand Rios (N-R model) was implemented to assess its suitability for predicting the fatigue behaviour of specimens with various controlled surface conditions, obtained by machining. The surface/material properties required to implement this model were obtained by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), surface profilometry, hardness testing and X-ray diffraction residual stress measurement. The fatigue limits were determined using rotating-bending by means of the staircase method. The fatigue limits predicted by the N-R fatigue model were compared with the results of the fatigue tests. There was no agreement between the prediction and observations, indicating that the original form of the N-R model is not appropriate for austenitic stainless steels. In AISI 304L, the surface residual stresses are the dominant parameter, allowing prediction of the effects of machining on fatigue resistance while, the surface roughness developed by machining has no significant effect. In AISI 316L, the effect of surface roughness is found to be negligible, with a weaker effect of surface residual stress than has been observed for AISI 304L. Crack nuclei in run-out (>107 cycles) fatigue tests were observed to arrest at twins and martensite packets, developed by fatigue in AISI 316L and AISI 304L, respectively. Good agreement with experiments was achieved by using a modification to the fatigue model, which takes account of the observed effect of the plastic deformation on the microstructure.

Abstract (sommario):
Corrosion resistant alloys (CRAs) used in subsea pressure-retaining components must be compatible with production fluids and resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion in seawater. Whereas materials selection in production environments is governed by well-established international standards such as ISO 15156, much debate still exists as of how to determine the seawater localized corrosion resistance of higher grade CRAs such as duplex super duplex stainless steels (DSS and SDSS, respectively). While most industry specifications rely on the ASTM G48 standard to determine localized corrosion resistance, for duplex and super-duplex stainless steels there is no consensus on surface finish prior testing (e.g. polishing or pickling) and test temperature (e.g. 50 °C in NORSOK 630 versus 40 °C in ASTM A923). Moreover, it is unclear whether existing procedures are sensitive enough to determine the onset of deleterious phases such as σ-phase and chromium nitrides. The objective of this investigation was to quantify the seawater pitting corrosion resistance of a type 25Cr SDSS (UNS S32750) and its correlation with microstructure and surface finish before testing. Cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPP) testing was used to determine the effect σ-phase on the corrosion response of the system. CPP results were then compared against industry standard practices based on the ASTM G48 Method A test. In addition, CPP tests were conducted at various temperatures, ranging from 25 to 90°C, to determine the effect of deleterious phases on critical pitting temperature (CPT) and overall localized corrosion resistance. The results from this project indicate that the Critical Pitting temperature for standard solution annealed Super Duplex Stainless Steel is 60-70°C. It is also shown that the corrosion resistance is reduced for material that contains sigma phase showing a Critical Pitting Temperature of 40-50°C. The surface treatments seem to have less effect on the values, but pickled surfaces gave a more repeatable result.

Abstract (sommario):
Temperature control is a key requirement for the production of quality steel strip. During hot rolling, various processes are carried out which improve surface and rolling characteristics but which also increase heat extraction from the slab or bar. Moreover, different hot mill configurations at different sites will give rise to different overall thermal behaviour. Temperature control is required to enable the basic properties of the steel strip to be achieved. Rather than concentrate on individual sections of the hot strip mill a custom-written thermal finite element model has been developed for Corus to stimulate the evolving temperature field in the slab and subsequent thinner bar over the entire hot rolling process. Localised cooling effects caused by hydraulic descale sprays, roll coolant, contact conduction, local atmospheric conditions, heat generation due to adiabatic heating of deformed material and rolling friction, constitute the main features of the model. Modelling of the temperature effects occurring throughout processing can then be used in the optimisation of process operations. This work describes both the practical approach and the numerical method used to develop the model and provides examples of simulations of different hot mill configurations.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis deals with the numerical simulation of cold forming processes, i. E. Wire drawing and rolling. First, high carbon steel mechanical behaviour was measured from experiments throughout this range of steel forming and a progressive mechanical anisotropy has been observed during drawing. Secondly, numerical simulations, with FORGE2005®, have been run to simulate the material behaviour during wire drawing and rolling. The main results show that the widening prediction, with an isotropic behaviour law, is not accurate with an underestimation of 10% on the total width. This underestimation is only 5% when an anisotropic behaviour is used. Then, a microstructural study coupled with an analysis of damage mechanisms was done on high carbon pearlitic steels during wire drawing and rolling. The mechanical anisotropy comes from the orientation of the pearlitic colonies in the drawing, and by the emergence of a preferential crystallographic texture. Three damage mechanisms have been identified during drawing. During rolling, damage expansion kinetics are changed because of heterogeneous strain. Simulation enabled to bring further information and to validate previous experimental observations. Finally, drawing optimization calculations have been performed and enabled to study the sensitivity of the cost functions (damage and drawing force) to optimization parameters (drawing die geometry). Moreover this study highlighted that optimal solution depends on the choice of the cost function and identified an opportunity to reduce damage by reducing the die angle without increasing the axial stresses and the fracture risk

Abstract (sommario):
The thin sheet steels, coated or not, has been widely used nowadays, mainly the hot dip galvanized steel sheets. It\'s observed as in the mechanic and automobilist industry as in the civil construction that in manufacturing of pieces and structures employ welding procedures. The aim of this work is to establish procedures to gas metal are welding with short circuit transfer of thin sheet steel elements, not coated and zinc-coated steel, in order to get junctions of acceptance quality and reduction of welding stress and distortion. This distortion arise of the thermal cycles that occur during the welding. In terms of the weld quality is defined the best consumables combination available in the market, in such a way to reduce the weld defects like porosities, spatters, cracks and loss of covering. To galvanized steel sheets, the combination: wire ER70S-3 and mixture 8%CO2 + 92% Ar showed the best performance. Three techniques were employed for control and reduce the welding distortion. One that using a spot heat sink following the arc, in this case the cooling jet, was more efficient that others techniques.

Abstract (sommario):
In the automotive industry, the requirements for polluting emissions lead to light vehicles, especially in decreasing the steel sheet thickness. This work in partnership with ArcelorMittal focuses on resistance spot welding of steel sheets. The aim is to identify the phenomena that induce operating weldability difficulties encountered with an asymmetrical stack of three coated steel sheets, including a very thin galvanized sheet of less than 0.6 mm, a sheet of DP600, and a hot stamped Usibor® sheet. Infrared camera observations show that the initial heating takes placeat the interfaces with the Usibor®1500 sheet, and that the nugget appears inside this sheet, away from the thin sheet. The very high values of the electrical and thermal contact resistances, measured at the interfaces with the Usibor®1500 sheet, are due to the Alusi® coating and are at the origin of the strong initial heating at these interfaces. A numerical model, limited to the electro- thermal aspects and developed with COMSOL Multiphysics®, shows that the nugget is initiated very quickly in Usibor®1500 sheet under the effect of adjacent contact resistances, and that its development is driven by the evolutions of the electrode-sheet contact areas. The contact resistances between the electrode and the thin sheet, the welding current evolution, and the curvature radius of electrode tips are the most efficient parameters to be optimized to improve the penetration of the nugget in the thin sheet

Abstract (sommario):
This work presents an investigation of analytical models for predicting the tensile strength to bolted connections in thin sheets and cold-formed steel members, according to four design specifications (ABNT NBR 14762:2010, ANSI AISI S100:2007-S, AS/NZS 4600:2005 and Eurocode 3 Parte1.3:2010). The study involved 404 experimental results of bolted connections, as follows: 232 connections in thin sheets, 104 connections in angles and 68 connections in channels, in which various geometric configurations were analyzed. A total of 1616 strength analysis were performed so that statistics of the random variable model error could be constructed. Thus, the model error analysis consists of plotting the probability of error model, then for the adherence tests could then be applied satisfactorily validating theoretical functions of probability distribution for the statistical representation of random variable. A regression was used in bolted connections to describe the variation of the model error with the thickness of the sheet and to describe the model uncertainty. The analysis showed that the models can predict Brazilians and Americans, on average, net section fracture more efficiently than the other specifications, for use of coefficient of reduction of net area, and also note that all models showed a great variability of results around the mean, which makes the reliability of the models is affected. The reliability analysis used to assess the safety level of design specifications, included the model error and other random parameters such as tensile strength of steel, dead (D) and live (L) loads, totaling 7092 analysis on bolted connections, revealing that the contribution the random variable model error in the security of these connections is considerable, especially for load ratios (Ln/Dn) between 0.50 and 2.50. It should also be noted that the design specifications were evaluated according to sufficient and uniform reliability criteria showing that uniformity is achieved more easily for the four specifications, for load ratios (Ln/Dn) higher than 2.0, and that the sufficiency of security, most of the analysis, is not achieved, especially for the failure modes of bearing of the hole, in which the reliability index for the connections are located around 2.0 to 2.5, below the target value of 3.5 indicated by AISI and 3.8 indicated by EUROCODE. Furthermore, when dealing with the net section fracture, the models Brazilian, American and Australian also did not reach desirable levels of security, however, provided failure probabilities well below those obtained for the failure modes of bearing. Finally, sensitivity analysis revealed that the parameters x/L and d/g, present in the analytical models for predicting the net section fracture, the specification for Brazilian and U.S., do not affect the structural safety of the connections.

Abstract (sommario):
Surface treatments used to improve the life of a material known as peening are already extensively used in industry. The main aim of peening is to introduce compressive resiudal stress to the surface and subsurface of a metallic material, however literature also includes a number of microstructural and mechanical effects that peening introduces to a material when the compressive residual stress is established. The aim of this dissertation is compare and contrast the mechanical and microstructural effects of a current industrial peening method called shot peening, with three new increasingly competitive surface treatments. These are laser shock peening, ultrasonic impact treatment and water jet cavitation peening. The surface finish, and changes in microstructure, hardness depth profile, residual stress depth profile and plastic work depth profile of the four surface treatments are analysed. The effect of the peening parameters on the material is also determined, such as length of time of treatment, shot size, step size, direction of treatment, and irradiance per centimetre squared. The effect of peening on the residual stress depth profile of a gas tungsten eight pass grooved weld is also determined. Welding is a known region of early failure of material, with one of the factors affecting this being the introduction of tensile residual stress to the surface and near surface of the weld. An analysis to determine if peening the welded region alters the residual stress was carried out. In all experiments in this dissertation, the material that was used was austenitic stainless steel, as this material is highly used, especially within the nuclear industry. The results of this dissertation show that different peening types and peenign parameters produce a variety of surface, microstructural and mechanical effects to austenitic stainless steel. Peening of an aaustenitic stainless steel welded region results in teh near surface tensile residual stress to alter to ccompressive residual stress.

O trabalho apresentado teve origem no projecto de investigação “Tailored Thin Plasma Polymers Films for Surface Engineering of Coil Coated Steel”, financiado pelo Programa Europeu ECSC Steel Research.
The present work was originated in the project “Tailored Thin Plasma Polymers Films for Surface Engineering of Coil Coated Steel”, financed by the European Program ECSC Steel Research. Polyurethane and polyester coil coatings modified with plasma polymer films prepared by hollow cathode, microwave and radio frequency plasma reactors were tested in order to obtain information about the influence of the process on the barrier properties of the coated systems and stability of the films obtained. The effects of the different steps on the whole process as well as the effect of different operating parameters were analysed. Different plasma precursors that could provide tailored surface properties, e.g. ultra-hydrophobic surface, antifinger print and enhanced cleaning properties were also tested. The experiments were performed in 0.5 M NaCl solution. The coating surface evolution was studied by means of Scanning Electronic Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy was used to study the electrochemical properties of the coating systems. Results obtained by Transmission Electronic Microscopy revealed the microstructure of the plasma polymer films applied on the top of the coil coatings. Surface optical properties modification with plasma polymerization was also investigated.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract: It can be understood by process modeling the development of a quantitative or qualitative representation of the physical phenomena associated to the process. In this work, simulations concerning the twin roll continuous caster of steels process at IPT (Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas do Estado de São Paulo) are performed. Two simulators were developed: (i) a simulator of unidirectional solidification with cooled steel mold and refractory lateral walls, by using a stainless steel as the reference metal (AISI 304), and varying superheat temperatures; (ii) a physical model, with components made of acrylic, water as the simulation fluid and potassium permanganate as a pigment. A previously developed mathematical model has been used to determine the metal/mold heat transfer coefficient by a method that compares experimenta1ltheoretical temperature curves. Measurement of secondary dendrite arm spacings is performed by microestructural examination of the samples, confirming the simulator efficiency in characterizing the solidification process in the pilot equipment. The use of the physical model has permitted to attain the best configuration for the tundish, by positioning the dam 15 cm or 20 cm from the left side of tundish

Abstract (sommario):
The use of cold-formed steel members in the steel building in Brazil comes growing of significant form. Inside of the same context, special attentions are being directed to the connections used in the cold-formed steel members, or the fact of the sheets used to this kind of steel members result each time more thin. For this reason the connections in cold-formed steel members have been studied for researchers, as much in the worldwide context as in Brazil. Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the introduction, production and sale of steel engravings in the illustrated picture books of the first half of the nineteenth century with particular reference to the publications of Henry Fisher, who began his career in Liverpool and continued it together with his son Robert in London. By looking at the processes from the initial artist's design through to its engraving and printing, and by establishing the interaction between the artist, author, publisher and engraver, this study will lead to a better understanding of both the economics and aesthetics of print production and determine the destination of these illustrated picture books by examining the relationship between the publisher and the public. Previous work on nineteenth-century topographical steel engraving has largely had a bibliographical rather than historiographical aim and has concentrated on the classification of images into regional units. Although useful these publications are not intended to be critical and do not lead to an understanding of the contextual background necessary to explain the enormous output and consumption of topographical steel-engraved books in the 1830s and 1840s. The two leading specialist topographical print-publishers were the London firms of Fisher, Son & Co. and George Virtue. The early career of Henry Fisher as a master printer of mainly religious publications issued in numbers is examined, and this study shows how his innovative marketing, selling and distribution methods led to these being adopted by others in the publishing trade. His transition from publisher of religious numbers in Liverpool to leading publisher of illustrated topographical works in London is investigated for the first time. As no records, account books or archives appear to have survived, this dissertation is based on the substantial number of illustrated travel books with steel-engraved plates that both firms produced between 1829 and 1844 as well as correspondence from Robert Fisher to the Irish artist George Petrie, in which Fisher explains some of 'the peculiarities of our business'. The two most prolific designers of illustrations for topographical picture books in this period were Thomas Allom (1804-1872) who worked for Fisher, and William Henry Bartlett (1809-1854) who worked for Virtue. Their contribution to the field of topographical book illustration has largely passed unnoticed by art historians who question whether mass produced images can be valued as art. Allom and Bartlett are usually classified as jobbing topographical artists or, at best, as architectural draughtsmen. A secondary aim of this dissertation is to offer a counterbalance to this view and show that their art was more genuinely creative than merely reproductive and moreover that their motives for doing this work were far from being similar.

Abstract (sommario):
During the last decades, the localized failure of massive structures under thermo-mechanical loads becomes the main interest in civil engineering due to a number of construction damaged and collapsed due to fire accident. Two central questions were carried out concerning the theoretical aspect and the solution aspect of the problem. In the theoretical aspect, the central problem is to introduce a thermo-mechanical model capable of modeling the interaction between these two physical effects, especially in localized failure. Particularly, we have to find the answer to the question: how mechanical loading affect the temperature of the material and inversely, how thermal loading result in the mechanical response of the structure. This question becomes more difficult when considering the localized failure zone, where the classical continuum mechanics theory can not be applied due to the discontinuity in the displacement field and, as will be proved in this thesis, in the heat flow. In terms of solution aspect, as this multi-physical problem is mathematical represented by a differential system, it can not be solved by an 'exact' analytical solution and therefore, numerical approximation solution should be carried out. This thesis contributes in both two aspects. Particularly, thermomechanical models for both steel and concrete (the two most important materials in civil engineering), which capable of controling the hardening behavior due to plasticity and/or damage and also the softening behavior due to the localized failure, are carried out and discussed. Then, the thermomechanical problems are solved by 'adiabatic' operator split procedure, which 'separates' the multi-physical process into the 'mechanical' part and the 'thermal' part. Each part is solved individually by another operator split procedure in the frame-work of embbed-discontinuity finite element method. In which, the 'local' discontinuities of the displacement field and the heat flow is solved in the element level, for each element where localized failure is detected. Then, these discontinuities are brought into the 'static condensation' form of the overall equilibrium equation, which is used to solved the displacement field and the temperature field of the structure at the global level. The thesis also contributes to determine the ultimate response of a reinforced concrete frame submitted to fire loading. In which, we take into account not only the degradation of material properties due to temperature but also the thermal effect in identifying the total response of the structure. Moreover, in the proposed method, the shear failure is also considered along with the bending failure in forming the overal failure of the reinforced structure. The thesis can also be extended and completed to solve the behavior of reinforced concrete in 2D or 3D case considering the behavior bond interface or to take into account other type of failures in material such as fatigue or buckling. The proposed models can also be improved to determine the dynamic response of the structure when subjected to earthquake and/or impact.

Abstract (sommario):
In order to diminish the harmful effects of aluminate inclusions and improve the castability of molten steel, calcium treatment is widely used in Aluminum killed steels. However, calcium treatment gives irregular results. Even with many efforts done to understand the behavior of calcium in liquid steel, it is not yet accurately predicted. Therefore, the mechanism by which the calcium dissolves into the liquid steel and transforms the solid inclusions must be understood to optimize the process conditions such as injection speed, injection depth, injection wire diameter, stirring time, etc. In order to understand the mechanism by which the calcium dissolves into the liquid steel, laboratory scale experiments have been performed in a small induction furnace of 2.5 kg metal capacity. The calcium injections are performed at the temperature below and above the boiling point of calcium. Then, the corresponding yields (calcium recovery) are compared. Rise of calcium droplet or bubble in liquid steel is a three-phase problem (calcium droplet or calcium bubble/liquid steel/air at the top). Therefore, an in-house scientific computational platform (ICI-tech) based on finite element methods is adapted to allow the modeling of such three-phase flows, which is validated using the classical benchmark issued from the literature. The dissolution model has been implemented in our software, and their validation has been performed. Thereafter, the rise of Calcium droplets and bubbles are studied in the liquid steel, and their respective average mass transfer coefficient in the liquid steel is reported. In order to study the calcium liquid/gas phase change, the nucleation model has been implemented in the code (ICI-tech). A typical test is performed where the growth of a bubble (water vapor) in uniformly superheated water and growth of a calcium bubble in uniformly superheated Ca liquid is computed

Abstract (sommario):
Electrochemical machining (ECM) is a non-conventional manufacturing process, which uses electrochemical dissolution to shape any conductive metal regardless of its mechanical properties and without leaving behind residual stresses or tool wear. Therefore, ECM can be an alternative for machining difficult-to-cut materials, complex geometries, and materials with improved characteristics, such as strength, heat-resistance or corrosion-resistance. Notwithstanding its great potential as a shaping tool, the ECM process is still not fully characterised and its research is an on-going process. Various phenomena are involved in ECM, e.g. electrodynamics, mass transfer, heat transfer, fluid dynamics and electrochemistry, which occur in parallel and this can lead to a different material dissolution rate at each point of the workpiece surface. This makes difficult an accurate prediction of the final workpiece geometry. This problem was addressed in the first part of the present thesis by developing a simulation model of the ECM process in a two-dimensional (2D) environment. A finite element analysis (FEA) package, COMSOL multiphysics® was used for this purpose due to its capacity to handle the diverse phenomena involved in ECM and couple them into a single solution. Experimental tests were carried out by applying ECM on stainless steel 316 (SS316) samples. This work was done in collaboration with pECM Systems Ltd® from Barnsley, UK. The interest of studying ECM on stainless steels (SS) resides on the fact that the application of ECM on SS typically results in various different surface finishes. The chromium in SS alloys usually induces the formation of a protective oxide film that prevents further corrosion of the alloy, giving the metal the special characteristic of corrosion resistance. This oxide film has low electrical conductivity; hence normal anodic dissolution often cannot proceed without oxide breakdown. Partial breakdown of the oxide film often occurs, which causes pits on the surface or a non-uniform surface finish. Therefore the role of the ECM machining parameters, such as interelectrode gap, voltage, electrolyte flow rate, and electrolyte inlet temperature, on the achievement of a uniform oxide film breakdown was evaluated in this work. Experimental results show that the resulting surface finish is highly influenced by the over-potential and current density, and by the characteristics of the electrolyte, flow rate and conductivity. The complexity of experimentally controlling these parameters emphasised the need for the development of a computational model that allows the simulation of the ECM process in full. The simulation of ECM in a three-dimensional (3D) environment is crucial to understand the behaviour of the ECM process in the real world. In a 3D model, information that was not visible before can be observed and a more detailed realistic solution can be achieved. Hence, in this work a computer aided design (CAD) software was used to construct a 3D geometry, which was imported to COMSOL Multiphysics® to simulate the ECM process, but this time in a 3D environment. This enhanced simulation model includes fluid dynamics, heat transfer, mass transfer, electrodynamics and electrochemistry, and has the novelty that an accurate computational simulation of the ECM process can be carry out a priori the experimental tests and allows the extraction of enough information from the ECM process in order to predict the workpiece final shape and surface finish. Moreover, this simulation model can be applied to diverse materials and electrolytes by modifying the input ECM parameters.

My intention as a sculptor is to explore the intersection between nature and industry. I seek to find a balance between the industrial (steel) and the natural (stone). Steel represents societal obligations. Stone (river rock) is specific to place and representative of family. With these juxtaposed elements I strive to create sculptural forms of wonder and contemplation. Abstract (sommario):
The growing demand for cold-formed steel members of steel structures in Brazil, allied to the obsolescence of the brazilian NB-143:1967 standard, led to the need for a new brazilian code for the \'Design of Cold-formed Steel Structural Members\', the NBR14762:2001 standard. This new standard contains expressions adapted from the american AISI:1996 code for the design of connections. The adaptations were included with the purpose of simplifying the calculation and were determined merely for theoretical adjustments; hence, they lack a more careful investigation. It has thus become a matter of priority to study the connections in thin sheets and cold-formed members to evaluate the proposed expressions. The work reported on here therefore analyzed the structural behavior of bolted connections in thin sheets and cold-formed members based on theoretical and experimental analyses of test specimens, which were defined in order to obtain the various failure modes, particularly on sheet tearing in the net section. Based on the experimental results, suggestions are made for modifications in the expressions of the reduction coefficient of the net area Ct, applied in evaluations of the tensile strength of the effective net section. It is expected that the results of this research will contribute to future editions of the new brazilian code, supplying inputs for use in future revisions.

Abstract (sommario):
The assembly of various elements of timber structures of standard dimensions such as timber beams or composite beams is often achieved by nailed steel connectors. These folded steel elements obtained by cold forming can be launched on the European market once an ETA is delivered regarding the recommendations of the ETAG 015. Up to now, the development and the characterisation of the strength of these connectors have been done within the company: CULLEN Building Products by lengthy and costly experimental tests. As an alternative to this procedure, this work presents an approach which enables modelling the behaviour of these connections by the finite element method. In the first place the influence of the type of steel used and the forming process on the strength of these hangers was studied. It is shown that it is not necessary to take into account the hardening produced by the forming of the steel so that the modelling can be achieved from the final geometry by shell elements. Secondly a simplified model of the behaviour of the nails is proposed. The parameters necessary for its implementation are identified. The model is then used to simulate the behaviour of the connection of a steel plate to timber by a single nail. These results are then confronted with the experimental results. As the model is necessarily 3 dimensional, a 3D non linear model is proposed for the timber by considering it as a structure. This structure is composed of cubes of crushable foam which are associated with elasto-plastic beams to give this structure its highly orthotropic behaviour. This structural model of wood is implemented to model the shear of timber bars, transversal compression where beams are supported, embedment tests of steel dowels and a traditional bird's mouth assembly. These various models show the capacities of this structural model to describe timber's complex behaviours; they also define the limits of this modelling. In the last section, the hanger, the nails and the timber are assembled in order to constitute the models for three characteristic and complex hangers of CULLEN's production. The results obtained are confronted with the experimental results. Finally, the models are used to explain the internal behaviour of these hangers at various loads up to their failure

Abstract (sommario):
Classical fatigue models teach that there is an intrinsic fatigue limit for steels, representing a level of stress that is too low for regular crack growth where every cyclic load propagates a fatigue crack through the material. Modern application with extreme lifetimes has shown that fatigue will still take place in steels with stress levels well below the expected fatigue limit. This relatively new area of study has been named Very High Cycle Fatigue, or VHCF, and describes fatigue failures with a number of load cycles exceeding 107. Fractography of steels that has suffered VHCF tends to reveal an especially rough crack surface adjacent to where the fatigue crack originates, which is typically some form of defect in the bulk of the steel. This area is believed to be critical for VHCF and has been referred to in a number of ways by different studies, but will herein be called Fine Granular Area, or FGA. The aim of this study is to try and get a better understanding of VHCF. This was done by fractography analysis of test specimens of high strength tool steel that suffered fatigue failure at lifetimes ranging from about 106 cycles to 1,9x109 cycles. The lower lifetimes were achieved using hydraulic testing equipment, while the specimens in the VHCF range suffered fatigue failure in ultrasonic testing equipment allowing the application of a cyclic stress at a rate of 20 000 Hz. The resulting fracture surfaces were then investigated using a scanning electron microscope, or SEM, taking special note of the fatigue initiating defects and, in the case of VHCF, the rough area found adjacent to it. In combination with the SEM an elemental analysis of the fatigue initiating defects as well as the bulk of the material was done using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, or EDS. This was done to find out what the defects consisted of; confirming that they were slags and checking that the composition of the material of the bulk of the specimen matches what was expected. Using light optical microscopy in combination with acid etching of the surface of samples cut out of the test specimens the structure of the steel was investigated. Calculating the local stresses at the location of the fatigue initiating defect was done using FEM in combination with displacement amplitude gathered from the ultrasonic testing equipment. The data gathered was then measured and compared to that of previous studies, using models of prediction and seeing how they match the experimental results. The results suggest that the stress intensity factor at the internal slags is critical for VHCF and that with lower stress intensity factors one can expect longer lifetimes. Another observation is a relatively consistent stress intensity factor at the edge of the FGA combined with the original defect, likely signifying the transition from the creation of FGA to traditional crack propagation. There also seems to be a connection between the size of the FGA and the number of cycles to failure, with larger FGA with increasing lifetimes. The most glaring shortcoming of this study is the amount satisfactory tests conducted, and thus amount of data points, is very low due to the majority of specimens suffered failure at the threading used to connect them to the ultrasonic testing equipment at lifetimes far too low to be relevant.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this work is to set up a numerical framework to simulate the behaviour of industrial size reinforced concrete structures subjected to severe impacts. Our model is based on three main features : 1) modeling of the concrete with a discrete method to handle easily strong material discontinuities such as initiation and propagation of macro-cracks ; 2) modeling of the reinforcement bars with finite element method to be able to represent complex reinforcement cages of industrial structures ; 3) an original steel-concrete bond model that we proposed and implemented in the dynamic explicit code EUROPLEXUS and that constitutes the main task of this work. We studied theoretically and numerically this model to guarantee its stability and precision during the time integration. We calibrated its parameters by simulating pull-out tests. To verify our model, we simulated a tie-test (a long concrete column which contains a reinforcement bar) and showed that our model ensures the correct transfert of forces between steel and concrete. After testing our model on simple benchmarks, we simulated real reinforced concrete structures subjected to impacts (soft impact on a beam, Meppen test n°II-4), allowing us to validate our numerical approach and to define some perspectives to improve the models we have developped

This work aims at mechanic and metallographic characterization of Maraging 300 welded joints sheets, submitted to up to three repairs, used for the fabrication of solid propellant rocket motors at the Institute of Aeronautics and Space – IAE as to comply with its range of launchers. The rocket motor is a structural part and also has the primary function of supporting the nominal pressure during the propellant burning. At present, the rocket motor is fabricated in 300M-ESR steel and IAE has decided to replace such a steel for the Maraging 300 one. Due to IAE’s existing processes, Plasma Arc Welding – PAW with the keyhole technique and the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding – GTAW have been used, both single-pass welding with filler. Before they have been submitted to the tests, the joints went through non-destructive inspection according to AWS D17.1 Standard. Manual repairs and GTAW process have been made. Samples of the welded and repaired joints were submitted to tensile testing, Vickers hardness, chemical analysis, fractrographic and metallographic analysis. Body tests of the beads adjacent to the repairs have also been assessed. Results show that after welding, repairs and solubilization and aging heating treatment, the melted zone as well as the weld joins lines zone present hardness below other heat affected zones. As for the conditions of the non-repaired and repaired welds, the PAW process has demonstrated lower hardness values in all zones in what regards the GTAW process. The welded and fractured body tests surfaces analysis indicate the predominance of a fracture process started next to the weld joins lines which goes towards the bead interior. The nature of the fracture has shown the predominance of dimples. The GTAW welded body tests presented higher mechanical strength than that of the PAW process. Similarly, the PAW welded body tests obtained from the beads of the zones adjacent to repairs presented lower strength values. Although the mechanical strength values of the welded joints submitted to up to three repairs in the same point have shown great variability, there is no indication of strength decrease regarding the non-repaired joint.

Abstract (sommario):
The objective of the PhD work was to investigate the low cycle fatigue (LCF) behaviour of Fe-3Si steel employed for rotors of new starter-alternators developed by Valeo. The study took into account the relation between mechanical response and microstructure, the fatigue mechanisms, the assessment of strain at a mesoscopic scale and an optimisation of the rotor design. Low cycle fatigue tests performed on 350μm thick specimen pointed out a cyclic hardening of the material. The brittle crack propagation mode underlined the low toughness of the material. The formation of dislocations structures observed by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and controlled Electron Channelling Contrast Imaging (cECCI) was strain dependant. The total strain variation Δεt =0.7% appeared as a transition value. Below Δεt =0.7%, homogeneous arrangement of dislocations and transgranular crack initiation are observed. Above Δεt =0.7%, a mixture of veins-channels and wall-channels were observed inside the grains and cracking became intergranular. An Electron Back-Scattered Diffraction (EBSD) study was then performed on the specimen fatigued above Δεt=0.7% and approached with KAM, GROD and GOS parameters. It pointed out the strain gradient within grain and highlighted the strain localisation at grain boundaries. Finally, by taking into account LCF properties of the Fe-3Si steel in the material database of the finite element modelling, slight modifications of the rotor geometry have been performed which improves the electromagnetic performances of the machine

Abstract (sommario):
With increasing environmental awareness, the desire to protect human beings and the environment from adverse effects induced by dispersed metals has become an issue of great concern and interest. New policies, such as REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) within the European Community, have been implemented to reduce hazards posed by the use of chemicals on producers and downstream users. The generation of exposure assessment data and relevant test procedures able to simulate realistic scenarios are essential in such legislative actions. This doctoral study was initiated to fill knowledge gaps related to the metal release process of stainless steels. A wide range of stainless steel grades, fourteen in total, were investigated. They cover a very broad range of applications, and the focus in the thesis was to simulate a few selected exposure scenarios: precipitation, the human body and food intake. Comparisons were made between metal release from stainless steel alloys and the pure metals that constitute each stainless steel in order to explore the differences between alloys and pure metals, and to provide quantitative data on metal release rates of different alloy constituents. Because of similar surface properties between stainless steel and pure chromium, this metal exhibits similar release rates, whereas iron and nickel exhibit significantly lower release rates as alloy components than as pure metals. Detailed studies were also performed to elucidate possible relations between metal release and steel surface properties. Key parameters turned out to be chromium enrichment of the self-passivating surface film, surface roughness, the electrochemically active surface area and the microstructure of the steel substrate. The degree of metal release increased with decreasing chromium content in the surface oxide, increasing surface roughness, and increasing presence of inhomogeneities in the bulk matrix. More detailed studies were initiated to possibly correlate the nucleation of metastable pits and the extent of metal release. Evidence was given that metastable pits exist even when the stainless steel is passive, and may cause extremely short-lived bursts of released metal before the surface film repassivates again.

Abstract (sommario):
The PhD project is devoted to the study of the mechanical response of the reactor pressure vessel steel A508cl3 (or 16MND5 in French nomenclature) at the microscopic scale by experimental analyses and numerical simulations. Different aspects of in-situ tests inside an SEM chamber have been considered. First, the characterization and corrections of bias and uncertainties of different SEM imaging modalities (SE, BSE, and EBSD) have been performed. Precise registrations of SEM images in different modalities have been developed in order to give a comprehensive description of the sample surface topographies. Crystallographic orientation maps (from EBSD analyses) are registered to measure the crystal rotation and displacement fields along the tensile test. The elastic deformations of the surface are assessed by integrated correlation of high-resolution electron diffraction images. The 3D microstructure of the analyzed sample is revealed a posteriori by combining FIB milling andEBSD images. The experimental test is also simulated by crystal plasticity calculations on a 3D mesh created according to the 3D microstructure observed in the deformed configuration. An algorithm has been proposed to estimate its initial configuration and to identify the plastic parameters iteratively. A synthetic 2D model has been used to prove its feasibility. Two crystal plasticity laws have been validated on the 3D mesh, namely dislocation dynamics for body-centered cubic crystals and a modified version of Méric-Cailletaud model. In thepresent work finite element model updating was used to provide two sets of parameters (for ferrite and bainite) for the latter law

Abstract (sommario):
Currently, galvannealed carbon steel has been submitted to phosphatizing and/or chromatizing as surface pre-treatment; however, for economic and environmental issues, the viability to use silanes as an alternative pre-treatment has been studied. The silanes are organofunctionals molecules known for acting as coupling agents, adhesion promoters in paintings as well as for supplying protection against corrosion. The protection against corrosion depends mainly on the silane to be used, cure and hydrolysis conditions. The aim of this work is to study the conditions of the hydrolysis by a statistical project of experiments and the effect on corrosion protection, of either redox polymerization agent(ions of cerium IV) or a corrosion inhibitor (ions of cerium III) added to silane films (bis-functional silane: bis-[trimethoxysililpropyl]amine (BTSPA) and bis-1.2- [triethoxysilylpropyl]tetrasulfide (BTESPT)) obtained at silane concentration of 1%, 2% or 3% in mass of the solvent solution (50/50%) at pHs 4,0, 5,0, 6,5 and 9,0, deposited on galvannealed steel. The natural porous nature of the galvannealed steel surface as a results of thethermal annealing treatment o the zinc coating leads to higher needed immersion times inthe hydrolised silane solution in order to promote a complete wetting of the surface to reach a compact and homogeneous film. The addition of silica nanoparticles was also studied at different concentrationsin the films. The samples of galvannealed steel were immersed in the hydrolysis solution by dip-coating process. The films were obtained in mono and double layers. The cure conditions for the monolayer were obtained at temperature of 150ºC for 40 minutes. The cure conditions for the double layer were obtained: at temperature of 150ºC for 20 minutes for the first layer and at temperature of 150ºC for 40 minutes for the second layer. The electrochemical studies were performed using the scanning vibrate technique (SVET), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), linear polarization resistance (Rp) and potenciodinamyc polarization curves, all measurements were obtained in aerated NaCl 0.1mol.L-1or 0.05 mol.L-1solution . The chemical properties of the films were analyzed by infrared (IR) and micro Ramanspectroscopies. The physical characterization of samples was performed by measuring the kinematic viscosity. The contact angle measurements were obtained in order to characterize the hydrophobicity of the silane film coated metal surface. The images from optical y, scanning electron (SEM) and atomic force microscopies (AFM) were performed to characterize the morphology of the film and/or the dispersion of silica nanoparticles in the film. The results showed that for BTSPA as well as for BTESPT the ideal pH to obtain a more corrosion resistant silane film is pH 4.0. The physico-chemical analysis showed that the addition of cerium (III) or cerium (IV) ions increases the cross linking of the film, and the film obtained was more homogeneous, compact and corrosion resistant. The morphological characterization showed that in the porous of galvannealed surface silica nanoparticles agglomerated, consequently promoting cracks and the decrease of anti-corrisive properties of the films.

The current study is an in depth look of the impact of steel pan ensemble within the college curriculum of the Midwest. The goal of the study is to further understand what perceived impacts steel pan ensemble might have on student learning through the perceptions of both instructors and students. The ensemble's impact on the students’ senses of rhythm, ability to listen and balance in an ensemble, their understanding of voicing and harmony, and appreciation of world music were all investigated through both the perceptions of the students as well as the instructors. Other areas investigated were the role of the instructor to determine how their teaching methods and topics covered impacted the students' opinion of the ensemble. This includes, but is not limited to, time spent teaching improvisation, rote teaching versus Western notation, and adding historical context by teaching the students the history of the ensemble. The Midwest region was chosen both for its high density of collegiate steel pan ensembles as well as its encompassing of some of the oldest pan ensembles in the U.S. The study used an explanatory mixed methodology employing two surveys, a student version and an instructor version, distributed to the collegiate steel pan ensembles of the Midwest via the internet. The researcher intends for the current data to serve the music community in several ways: first, by determining exactly what the students and instructors value about the ensemble, we will better understand how an instrument created less than a century ago was able to infiltrate music programs all over the world. Second, giving instructors insight on the students' perspectives will also enable them to create a more effective and enjoyable curriculum. And lastly, with this information, instructors and program supervisors will be better suited to determine just how large of a role the ensemble should play in their students' education.

Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) were discovered in the 60s and the development of various systems (NiTi, CuAlNi, CuAlBe, CuZnAl) has been explored since then, with those of the NiTi system the most commonly used. Due to its excellent mechanical properties, good corrosion resistance and biocompatibility, in addition to having the best functional properties of shape memory effect and superelasticity, the NiTi SMA and its ternary variations have become the subject of studies for various applications in different areas. One of the main problems of NiTi SMA is also related to difficulties in forming and machining. For this reason, the welding process can be a good alternative tool to achieve more complex geometry parts, involving the union of NiTi SMA with conventional metals, such as stainless steel. Stainless steel is an important option for union with NiTi SMA, since it also has desired properties of mechanical strength, biocompatibility and corrosion resistance. The union by welding between these two alloys find various barriers, the main one being the formation of brittle intermetallic compounds on the welded joint, limiting its mechanical strength and consistent application. In this context, this study aimed to assess the weldability of thin sheet metal (1 mm thick) of a NiTi SMA with AISI 304 stainless steel (SS) using the micro process GTAW, and study the influence of welding metallurgy in mechanical and metallurgical properties of the joints. The GTAW process was chosen because it is more economical than the usual welding processes for these NiTi alloys such as the laser beam welding (LBW). The NiTi-SS dissimilar joints obtained were characterized by optical microscopy techniques, SEM, EDS, DSC, tensile test to rupture and Vickers hardness. These joints were welded using NiTi SMA and also the Inconel 625 as filler metals. Overall, it was found that the joints have brittle behavior, but when using an intermediate layer of Inconel 625 at the junction between dissimilar metals and after heat treatment for stress relief, it is possible to increase the mechanical strength of the joint for values in the order of 150MPa. The joints exhibited a heterogeneous molten weld pool due to formation of elements along the embrittlement of the weld metal. It was observed the formation of a partially diluted zone (PDZ) correlated to an excessive increase of the hardness in that region and different chemical composition.

Abstract (sommario):
Decades  ago,  1  ton  of  steel  required  80  kg  of  refractory  material.  While  the  scenario  has completely changed over the years. Today, 1 ton of steel needs approximately 11 kg of refractory material   depending   on   the   steelworks.   Refractories   are   accustomed   to   high-temperature processes,  for  example,  producing  steel,  glass,  etc.  The amount of  spent  refractories has  also increased  with the increase in demand for its production. For the manufacturing of refractories, there is a tremendous use of virgin raw materials but with the increase in price and reducing raw material   sources,   it  will   be  difficult  to   continue  in  that   way  in  the  future.  While,  the environmental  concerns  in  steel  industries  are  increasing  on  a  rapid  scale  such  as  global environmental pollution, natural  resource conservation, and the most important increase in cost for  landfilling.  Therefore,  achieving  zero  waste  and  proper  usage  of  material  from  spent refractories is necessary for economic and environmental reasons in future. This project work focuses on collecting information regarding the refractory waste management for  aid  towards   more   sustainable  Swedish  steel  industries.  The  project  is  carried  out  in collaboration  with  KTH  Royal  Institute  of  Technology  and  the  Swedish  steel  producers association  Jernkontoret.  This  work  focuses  on  a   survey   of  well-known  Swedish  steel companies Sandvik Materials Technology (SMT) AB and Höganäs AB. The scientific work concentrates on the investigation of MgO-C bricks mixed waste, collected from Mireco AB, up to a grain size of 20 mm. Three samples of varying compositions and different grain sizes were collected  from  the  recycling  site  and  processed  for  carbon  reduction.  On  several  trails,  the maximum  carbon  elimination  was  achieved at a  temperature higher than  800°C with holding time longer than 5h. The fines underwent mechanical pressing of 40 MPa to form pellets of 16 mm and 32 mm in diameter. The main traced elements of MgO, SiO2, CaO, Al2O3  and Fe2O3  can be utilized for applications in the agricultural industry. MgO is present in the maximum quantity (70-80%).  By  possible  extraction  of  MgO  from  the  fines  can  be  employed  in  the  crucible industry,  construction industry  and steel  industry for slag  formation. The MgO  in the form of supplements for magnesium deficient soils or calcium magnesium oxide for neutralizing the pH of  the  soil  by  balancing  the  acidity  can  be  employed.  The  compatibility of the  fines can be helpful  to  resolve  transportation  issues and benefit  convenient addition to processes. Overall, this  work  brings  to  the  fore  a  high  potential  for  using  such  waste  refractory  materials  forapplications besides landfilling with an emphasis on agriculture.

Abstract: This work aims at mechanic and metallographic characterization of Maraging 300 welded joints sheets, submitted to up to three repairs, used for the fabrication of solid propellant rocket motors at the Institute of Aeronautics and Space - IAE as to comply with its range of launchers. The rocket motor is a structural part and also has the primary function of supporting the nominal pressure during the propellant burning. At present, the rocket motor is fabricated in 300M-ESR steel and IAE has decided to replace such a steel for the Maraging 300 one. Due to IAE's existing processes, Plasma Arc Welding - PAW with the keyhole technique and the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding - GTAW have been used, both single-pass welding with filler. Similarly, the PAW welded body tests obtained from the beads of the zones ... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Experimental and numerical studies of hot tearing and macrosegregation formation during steel solidification are reported. On one hand, an ingot punching test is considered. It consists of the application of a deformation at the surface of a solidifying 450 kg steel ingot. On the other hand, finite element thermo-mechanical modelling of the test is used. For hot tearing analysis, 3D finite element modeling is applied by use of Thercast® software. The time evolution of the strain tensor serves to evaluate the possibility for hot tear formation with a Hot Tearing Criterion (HTC). The HTC compares the local accumulation of strain over a certain solidification interval with the expression of a critical value proposed in the literature. Detailed comparisons reveal an excellent capability of the HTC to predict the formation of hot tears. For macrosegregation analysis, a two-phase formulation has been implemented (R2sol software), in which the velocities of the liquid and solid phases are concurrently solved for. The simulation shows how solutes are redistributed through the central mushy zone of the ingot under the effect of the com-pression of the solid phase resulting from the punching of the solid shell. The simulation proves its capability to reproduce the main experimental trends. However the predicted intensity of macrosegregation is lower than measured. Through discussion and analysis of different numerical sensitivity tests, critical material parameters and model improvements are identified in view of achieving better quantitative predictions in the future. The two topics studied have clearly shown the need for a good modelling of microsegregation phenomena in multicomponent alloys. A numerical model has especially been developed and implemented in the two software packages

Abstract (sommario):
9-12%Cr tempered martensite steels are used for high temperature (400-600°C) especially applications in components of fossil power plants, such as tubes, pipes, heaters. These components are exposed to creep, thermal aging, fatigue, oxidation, corrosion. The development of advanced heat resistant steels with improved long-term creep strength relies on a better understanding of the long-term microstructural evolution and of its influence on the creep strength. This study aims at better understanding of the effect of microstructural evolution on long-term creep strength at 600°C and 650°C of a Grade 92 steel. There are rather few published data on the microstructure of the Grade 92 steel after long-term creep or thermal aging exposure (times higher than 10,000h) both at 600°C and 650°C. Thus, in a first part, P92 steel specimens that had been creep tested for times up to 50,000h at 600°C and 650°C were investigated using transmission electron microscopy on extractive replicas of precipitates, scanning electron microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction to get data on the microstructure of the Grade 92 steel after long-term exposure. These investigations revealed significant precipitation of Laves phases, recovery of the matrix and little precipitation of modified Z-phase. A quantification of the Laves phases and creep damage were realized by image analysis of scanning electron micrographs. Significant precipitation of Laves phase and recovery of the matrix seem to be the most prominent microstructural degradation mechanisms. To separately investigate the effect of each of these two mechanisms on creep strength, creep tests were conducted on thermally aged and thermo-mechanically prepared creep specimens. Creep tests were also conducted on notched specimens. Thermally aged creep specimens enable to study the effect of large Laves phases on the creep strength. A time to rupture four times lower was observed on the aged creep specimens compared to a standard creep test for same testing conditions. This seems not be confirmed, however, at low stresses. Two creep specimens thermo-mechanically prepared by creep-fatigue prestraining at 550°C were used to study the effect of the matrix substructure on the creep strength. A time to rupture twice lower was observed at 600°C (short-term creep) on a thermo-mechanically prepared creep specimen compared to a standard one for the same testing conditions. No such effect was detected at 650°C in the low stress regime. Creep tests were also conducted on notched specimens with various notch shapes to study the effect of stress triaxiality on creep damage. In notched specimens higher amounts of creep damage were observed compared to smooth specimens for similar testing time. A finite element mechanical model coupling microstructural evolution and creep damage was proposed to estimate the long-term creep strength of the Grade 92 steel at 600°C and 650°C. The model taking stress triaxiality into account might also be used to estimate the remaining life of service components and to analyze service components with complex geometry more sensitive to creep damage due to stress triaxiality

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this study is to develop software tools allowing the treatment of coupled physical phenomena in a finite élément environment called S. I. C. (interactive design system). The specificities of the magnéto-thermal coupling in particular are studied. First the encountered problems are presented and then the chosen and programmed solutions are justified through an application of shaping by magnetic heating. Indeed, such a coupling involves many difficulties. First of ail, the tools and the models allowing the représentation of the magnetic and thermal phenomena need to be at one's disposai. Then, the modelling of moving parts with contacts requires the use of well adapted methods. For the movement, différent kinds of re-mesh or "assimilated" are used, while for the thermal contact, an original method of exchange between line éléments has been developed. In order to make différent physical models coexist and communicate among themselves, a "direct coupling" method is used (in such a method, the finite élément solving of each field are successively chained). This method allows to keep the vested interests of each field and to respect their needs and évolutions (This method allows to respect the partieularities of each field as well as their needs and évolutions). Moreover, this method has proved to be well adapted to an object data structuring. The generic tools thus realised hâve allowed the development of a magnéto-thermal module. This module has been used to study a sophisticated industrial process of shaping iron tubes by magnetic heating

Abstract (sommario):
Eutectoid steel strips are designed for the production of parts for intensive use such as clutches, seat slides, and springs as they exhibit

excellent strength levels and wear resistance. These properties arise from the unique morphology of lamellar pearlite which can be considered

as a self-laminated nanoscale composite. However, a spheroidization annealing step is nowadays necessary to improve the cold forming properties before further cold rolling steps.

This thesis is aimed at improving the tensile ductility of the hot rolled products of eutectoid composition in order to eliminate the intermediate

annealing step. Two strategies are proposed.

The first is to transpose the concept of controlled rolling developed for HSLA to

eutectoid steels. Through a strict adjustment of the austenite processing and of the cooling strategy, it is possible to improve the ductility

of the final lamellar microstructure. The way the processing parameters influence the hot deformation of austenite, the eutectoid transformation and of the subsequent spheroidization annealing is deeply

investigated. It is found that refinement and pancaking of austenite

is beneficial as it reduces the pearlite block size improving the total

tensile elongation. Accelerated cooling is of paramount importance to

achieve fine Interlamellar spacing (ILS), which lead to high strength

levels and accelerate spheroidization during subsequent annealing.

The second approach involves intercritical or warm deformation. Warm processing of eutectoid steels is first explored by torsion testing

and then up-scaled to a pilot rolling-line. The interactions between thermomechanical parameters, rolling forces generated and microstructural

evolution are carefully scrutinized. During concurrent hot deformation, spheroidization of cementite takes place almost instantaneously

in both torsion and rolling. The restoration processes occurring in the ferrite matrix depends on the strain path and the strain rates. Low strain rates (0,1 s−1) and simple shear promotes the formation of a recrystallized-like HABs network of about 3μm in size.

Plane strain compression and high strain rates (10 s−1) leads to the formation of a typical recovered dislocation substructure (LABs) of 1μm in size. During annealing, no recrystallization occurs and the LABs substructure remains stable. This substructure influences drammatically the mechanical properties: the strength is very high and the work-hardening behavior is poor due to high recovery rate in the region close to the LABs. However, due to the presence of spheroidized

cementite particles the ductility of warm rolled eutectoid steels is higher than that of ultra fine grained low carbon steels.

Abstract (sommario):
The principal objective of this work was to elucidate the effect of microstructural features on the intrinsic dislocation mechanisms in two FCC alloys. First alloy Al0.1CoCrFeNi was from a new class of material known as complex concentrated alloys, particularly high entropy alloys (HEA). The second was a conventional Al-Mg-Sc alloy in ultrafine-grained (UFG) condition. In the case of HEA, the lattice possess significant lattice strain due to the atomic size variation and cohesive energy differences. Moreover, both the lattice friction stress and the Peierls barrier height are significantly larger than the conventional FCC metals and alloys. The experimental evidences, so far, provide a distinctive identity to the nature and motion of dislocations in FCC HEA as compared to the conventional FCC metals and alloys. Hence, the thermally activated dislocation mechanisms and kinetics in HEA has been studied in detail. To achieve the aim of examining the dislocation kinetics, transient tests, both strain rate jump tests and stress relaxation tests, were conducted. Anomalous behavior in dislocation kinetics was observed. Surprisingly, a large rate sensitivity of the flow stress and low activation volume of dislocations were observed, which are unparalleled as compared to conventional CG FCC metals and alloys. The observed trend has been explained in terms of the lattice distortion and dislocation energy framework. As opposed to the constant dislocation line energy and Peierls potential energy (amplitude, ΔE) in conventional metals and alloys, both line energy and Peierls potential undergo continuous variation in the case of HEA. These energy fluctuations have greatly affected the dislocation mobility and can be distinctly noted from the activation volume of dislocations. The proposed hypothesis was tested by varying the grain size and also the test temperature. Activation volume of dislocations was a strong function of temperature and increased with temperature. And the reduction in grain size did not affect the dislocation mechanisms and kinetics. This further bolstered the hypothesis. The second part deals with deformation characteristics of Al-Mg-Sc alloy. The microstructure obtained from the severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques differ in dislocation density, grain/cell size, and in the grain boundary character distribution. Therefore, it is vital to understand the deformation behavior of the UFG materials produced by various SPD techniques, as the microstructural features basically control the deformation mechanisms. In this study, a detailed analysis was made to understand the deformation mechanisms operative in various regimes of a stress-strain in UFG Al-Mg-Sc alloy produced via friction stir processing. The stress-strain curves exhibited serrations from the onset of yielding to the point of sample failure. The serration amplitude and frequency was higher in UFG material as compared to CG material. Furthermore, the microstructural features that result in the serrated flow were investigated along with the avalanche characteristics. The presence of both ultrafine grains and Al3Sc precipitates were the necessary conditions to reach the critical stress required to push the grain boundary into a critical state to set off an avalanche. The microstructural conditions that did not satisfy both the requirements did not exhibit deep serrations.

Abstract (sommario):
This work focused on the experimental and numerical analysis of the normalized disk pressure test used to select metallic materials hydrogen sensitive and particularly aimed to evaluate the potential extension of the test to higher pressures. The study focused on an AISI 4135 steel, which composed hydrogen gas storage vessels. Disk pressure tests had been leading under helium and hydrogen gas in order to study the influence of some parameters on failure pressures and to obtain experimental deflection-pressure curves. The response of the test for pressures higher than in the usual domain of specifications was studied for different disk thickness. SEM-EBSD characterization of failed or cracked disks allowed examining cracks at different scales in the bainitic microstructure. Finite element simulations of disk pressure test permitted to analyze the influence of different parameters on mechanical field distributions in the disk and led to a satisfying comparison with experimental results. Helium failure pressures were obtained by a ductile damage computation ; and hydrogen failure pressures were described thanks to a cohesive elements model. Distributions of diffusive and trapped hydrogen in the material during a disk pressure test were obtained considering hydrogen diffusion is assisted by the hydrostatic pressure and the evolution of trapping with strain. Extension of the simulation at polycrystalline scale open the way to embrittlement index ; taking into account microstructural heterogeneities

Abstract (sommario):
Residual δ-ferrite is widely encountered in the as-cast microstructure of austenitic stainless steels. It stems from the incomplete high temperature solid-state δ→γ transformation occurring upon the solidification stage. Its presence has a detrimental effect the hot workability of stainless steels, leading to the formation of edge cracks and sliver defects during slabs hot rolling. This PhD work aims at bringing more understanding of the kinetics of high temperature δ→γ transformation in austenitic stainless steels via experimental and numerical modeling. The transformation was studied in a ternary Fe-Cr-Ni ingot-cast alloy with composition close to the industrial alloys. Three ferrite morphologies were identified: lathy at the edge of the ingot, vermicular and lathy at the center. Their dissolution kinetics were established at temperatures ranging from 1140°C to 1340°C and characterized in terms of ferrite fraction and Cr and Ni diffusion. The vermicular ferrite undergoes a transient growth followed by a high then a low rate dissolution regimes. On the other hand, ferrite dissolution was also studied in the multilayered microstructures. such microstructures were elaborated by alternating ferrite and austenite sheets of the Fe-Cr-Ni system, diffusion-bonded by Hot isostatic Pressing and reduced in thickness by successive rollings. Dissolution is easier to handle in such microstructures thanks to the initial planar δ/γ interfaces. Analysis of the experimental results were carried out with a numerical moving-boundary model of diffusion-controlled δ→γ transformation. Diffusion can be treated in the planar, cylindrical and spherical geometries. As a preliminary validation, the model was used to analyze kinetics of ferrite dissolution in the multilayered microstructures. It was then applied to the cast alloy using an original descriptive approach combining spheres and cylinders as equivalent morphology of dendritic ferrite. Although based on simplifying assumptions, the model was able to reproduce experimental results with satisfactory agreement. Mechanisms underlying the initial growth of vermicular ferrite and the transition in dissolution regimes were outlined. The effect of a wide range of input parameters has been considered and relevant parameters for quantitative calculations were brought to light, such as thermodynamical descriptions of the Fe-Cr-Ni system, composition gradients and distribution of ferrite's radii

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis deals with the ultimate load limit analysis of steel frame structures. The steel frame structure has a very ductile response and a large potential to dissipate energy, which is crucial in the case of earthquakes. The ductility in the response of the structure comes from the behavior of the material itself and the behavior of the semi-rigid structural connections. The semi-rigid connections between beams and columns can significantly influence the response of the structure, sometimes up to 30%. In this thesis, we propose a methodology for modeling steel frame structures with included connection behavior. The idea is to model the behavior of the structural connections by the beam elements positioned in the corners of the steel frame structure. Other members of the steel frame structure, steel beams, and columns, will be modeled with nonlinear beam elements. This research consists of two parts. The first part deals with the behavior of the structural steel connections. In the second part, we present the development of the nonlinear beam element capable of representing the ductile behavior of steel structural elements, beams and columns. In the first part of the thesis, we define constitutive parameters identification procedure for the coupled plasticity-damage model with eighteen unknowns. This constitutive model is very robust and capable of representing a wide range of problems. The identification procedure was used in the preparation of experimental tests for three different types of structural steel connections. The experimental tests have been performed for two load cases. In the first, the load was applied in one direction with both the loading and unloading cycles. From the experimental measurements, we have concluded that the response of the experimental structure can be represented by the plasticity model only because no significant change in the elastic response throughout the loading program was observed. Therefore, we have chosen an elastoplastic geometrically exact beam to describe connection behavior. The hardening response of the beam is governed by bilinear law, and the softening response is governed by nonlinear exponential law. The identification of the parameters has been successfully done with fifteen unknown parameters identified. The two types of the experimental structures were also exposed to the cyclic loading. Measured experimental data shows complex connection behavior that cannot be described by the plasticity model alone. Namely, after changing load direction stiffness of the connection decreases. This suggests that the damage model should be incorporated in the constitutive law for the connections behavior as well. Therefore, we propose a new coupled plasticity-damage model capable of representing the loss in the stiffness of the connection with the changing of the load direction. At the end of this part, we also give the constitutive parameters identification for the proposed model. The second part of the thesis deals with the theoretical formulation and numerical implementation of the elastoplastic geometrically exact beam. The hardening response of the beam includes interaction between stress resultant section forces (N, T and M), and the softening response of the beam, which is governed by the nonlinear law. This type of the beam element is capable of representing the ductile behavior of a steel frame structure, and it takes into account second order theory effects. Performed numerical simulations show that the proposed geometrically nonlinear beam element is very robust and is able to provide a more precise limit load analysis of steel frame structures. By using proposed methodology for modeling steel structures, we are able to obtain the real distribution of section forces, including their redistribution caused by forming of the hinges and the connections behavior

Zirconium nitride (ZrN) and titanium-zirconium nitride (TiZrN) thin films were deposited on 316L stainless steel substrates using de RF Sputtering methods. Design of experiment (DOE) has long been recognized as a powerful method to optimize a complex process in industry. The purposes of present study were to verify the feasibility and reliability of the application of DOE method on de RF Sputtering processes and optimize the processing parameters for the deposition process, in which the sensitive parameters that affected the film properties were also identified. For de RF Sputtering method, two parameters, deposition rate and time were chosen to be the operating parameters. After deposition, the thin film structure was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM). After the polarization test, the corrosion analysis was carried out in order to investigate the relationship between the corrosion initiation and the thickness of the deposited layer. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to assess the sensitive parameters and predict the optimum conditions. Based on the statistical analysis, the most sensitive parameters in de RF Sputtering process were both the deposition rate and time. The optimum deposition conditions in each system were maximum deposition rate and time.
