Abstract (sommario):
Despite its embedded ambiguity, conventional wisdom tends to prevail over time. This may be because old adages recurrently embrace some ingredients of truth. As James A. Mathisen highlights, conventional wisdom plays a significant role in constituting knowledge as a starting point. For many people, numerous adages (the rich get richer while the poor get poorer; birds of a feather flock together) are most commonly perceived as true. More interestingly, the accuracy of the two folk wisdoms appears to be more salient in culture-producing industries, including the motion picture industry. Concomitantly, the two adages have long been connected to diverse societal phenomena and sociological knowledge.

Abstract (sommario):
Measurements of the force generated by the legs of rock doves Columba livia during vertical and near-vertical take-off showed that the birds were able to develop an upward directed force of from 1.3 to 2.3 times their body weight. This force resulted in an instantaneous acceleration of 15.63 ms−2 at maximum thrust. Motion pictures taken during the take-off showed that as the birds' feet left the experimental perch, their wings were in the overhead clap position. We suggest that the vertical take-off in birds is accomplished in three stages; leg thrust, clap-and-fling and steady-state flight.

Abstract (sommario):
Apical sodium-dependent bile acid transporter (ASBT) retrieves bile acids from the small intestine and plays a pivotal role in enterohepatic circulation. Currently, high-resolution structures are available for two bacterial ASBT homologs (ASBTNM from Neisseria meningitides and ASBTYf from Yersinia frederiksenii), from which an elevator-style alternating-access mechanism has been proposed for substrate transport. A key concept in this model is that the substrate binds to the central cavity of the transporter so that the elevator-like motion can expose the bound substrate alternatingly to either side of the membrane during a transport cycle. However, no structure of an ASBT has been solved with a substrate bound in its central cavity, so how a substrate binds to ASBT remains to be defined. In this study, molecular docking, structure determination and functional analysis were combined to define and validate the details of substrate binding in ASBTYf. The findings provide coherent evidence to provide a clearer picture of how the substrate binds in the central cavity of ASBTYf that fits the alternating-access model.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractModern computer-aided techniques foster the availability and quality of 3D visualization and reconstruction of extinct and extant species. Moreover, animated sequences of locomotion and other movements find their way into motion pictures and documentary films, but also gain attraction in science. While movement analysis is well advanced in vertebrates, particularly in mammals and birds, analyses in arthropods, with their much higher variability regarding general anatomy and size, are still in their infancies and restricted to a few laboratory species. These restrictions and deficient understanding of terrestrial arthropod locomotion in general impedes sensible reconstruction of movements in those species that are not directly observable (e.g., extinct and cryptic species). Since shortcomings like over-simplified approaches to simulate arthropod locomotion became obvious recently, in this review we provide insight into physical, morphological, physiological, behavioral, and ecological constraints, which are essential for sensible reconstructions of terrestrial arthropod locomotion. Such concerted consideration along with sensible evaluations of stability and efficiency requirements can pave the way to realistic assessment of leg coordination and body dynamics.

Abstract (sommario):
The application of digital technology on the protection of intangible cultural heritage is a major topic of research in recent years. The motion capture technology of protection will gradually replace the traditional recording methods such as texts, pictures and videos. It is valuable to build a high-fidelity, high-modular and low-cost digital platform for choreographic data collection and extended application. This paper studies the intangible cultural heritage of Quanzhou breast-clapping dance, one of the most famous choreographic intangible cultural heritages from China with standard optical motion capture method. The data are acquiring and processing after the dance motion capture, we binds the motion data and three-dimensional model using Motion Builder and build digital demonstration platform base on an OGRE engine to display the movements. The viewer can view at any angle and distance. The system can be easily applied in motion intangible cultural heritages protection project. Furthermore, the system can be provided versatile motion data for additional use.

Abstract (sommario):
Many unpalatable butterfly species use coloration to signal their distastefulness to birds, but motion cues may also be crucial to ward off predatory attacks. In previous research, captive passion-vine butterflies Heliconius mimetic in colour pattern were also mimetic in motion. Here, I investigate whether wing motion changes with the flight demands of different behaviours. If birds select for wing motion as a warning signal, aposematic butterflies should maintain wing motion independently of behavioural context. Members of one mimicry group ( Heliconius cydno and Heliconius sapho ) beat their wings more slowly and their wing strokes were more asymmetric than their sister-species ( Heliconius melpomene and Heliconius erato , respectively), which were members of another mimicry group having a quick and steady wing motion. Within mimicry groups, wing beat frequency declined as its role in generating lift also declined in different behavioural contexts. In contrast, asymmetry of the stroke was not associated with wing beat frequency or behavioural context—strong indication that birds process and store the Fourier motion energy of butterfly wings. Although direct evidence that birds respond to subtle differences in butterfly wing motion is lacking, birds appear to generalize a motion pattern as much as they encounter members of a mimicry group in different behavioural contexts.

Abstract (sommario):
The Motion Picture Mind Reading (MPMR) Test is a novel naturalistic mind-reading task, designed to measure individual differences in a young adult population in Japan. Short scenes from TV films showing characters in social situations were presented to 128 university students; participants judged the mental state of a character in these films. The distribution of task performance (MPMR Test) of participants was approximately normal and its psychometric properties were found to be satisfactory. The MPMR Test scores correlated positively with those of the Eyes Test and also with scores on the empathy quotient (EQ); they correlated negatively with scores on the systemizing quotient (SQ). The MPMR Test provides a further method for assessing subtle individual differences in mind-reading ability in the general population.

Abstract (sommario):
The necks of birds that possess complex structures, graceful curves, and flexible movements are perfect natural motion actuators. Studying their structural features, mechanic characteristics, and motion rules can provide valuable references for imitating such actuators and motion functions artificially. Previous studies have analyzed the influence of two-dimensional motion geometric features and anatomical structure of the neck on motion efficiency and motion stability. However, the mechanism of motion flexibility from the perspective of neck structure has not been investigated. This study investigates the general law of the relationship between the structural parameters and motion characteristics of birds’ necks using tomography technology and 3D reconstruction technology. The results show that the structural characteristics of geese and ducks are similar, and there are significant differences in joint motion characteristics. Geese obtains complex neck postures through active intervertebral joints and highly flexible facet joints and possesses higher neck flexibility than ducks. This study provides a generic measuring method for obtaining birds’ cervical spinal vertebral structural dimensional parameters and offers a new theoretical concept for bionic robotic structural design and manufacture.

Abstract (sommario):
Video watermarks must maintain picture quality and withstand image processing, and resolving the tradeoff between these conflicting requirements has been one of the central problems in research on video watermarking. This paper shows that watermarks are less perceptible where picture contents are moving and proposes a new criterion for measuring watermark imperceptibility from motion vectors and deformation quantities. It also proposes a watermarking method that uses this criterion to allocate watermarks to picture areas adaptively. Experimental evaluation showed that the proposed method reduces degradation in picture quality and that, for the same picture quality after MPEG encoding and decoding, between 30% and 40% more watermarks can be embedded, improving detection reliability after MPEG processing by an average of 9.5%. The proposed method would be most effective when used with MPEG encoders because they already have the necessary motion estimation functions.

Abstract (sommario):
A method is presented for three-dimensional motion posture correction employing Fuzzy kernel estimation and affine transformation. As selecting human moving node by a visual sensor and smoothing single frame image with irregular motion, noise interference is reduced. Based on principles of perspective and affine transformation, adjustment strategy of three-dimensional posture is deduced for irregular single-frame motion picture. In addition to determination of motion picture rotation, accurate correction of irregular single-frame motion picture is proposed. Experimental results show that, under different noise conditions, the algorithm corrects posture of a three-dimensional moving image accurately and presents strong anti-noise performance.
