Abstract (sommario):
People with disabilities are both functionally and socially disadvantaged and the lack of access to mobile communication technology adds to their disadvantage. Changes and benefits we have seen in our society with the advent of mobile phones and associated electronic communication for people without disabilities have not migrated to people with disabilities. The comprehensive communication capability of a mobile phone can enable users anywhere to independently access a very wide range of communication, information and control systems and services. This research has addressed the key accessibility issues faced by people with disabilities who need or want to use the mobile phone for voice and data communication. The research revealed that: there exist accessible features on mobile phones that can better assist people with disabilities in using the phone; through education and training, people with disabilities can develop or be provided with effective and efficient ways to access and use the phone; current, off-the-shelf telecommunications equipment such as car kits, speakerphone, voice recognition technology, wireless connectivity capability on mobile phones can enable people with disabilities, even severe physical disabilities, to access the telecommunications network and services; and with a suitable interfacing system in place, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device users can operate the phone for voice and data communication, which previously had not been possible. Trials established that people with a range of physical disabilities can use and should have equal access to telecommunications equipment and services. This research has shown that, with the right policies, processes and support through equipment matching, education, training and delivery, current off-the-shelf solutions can help people with disabilities to effectively communicate with other members of our society and to access the same range of information systems and services enjoyed by able-bodied members of the community. An interfacing system has been developed to provide users of AAC technology with the ability to use a mobile phone for voice calls and text messaging (SMS). It is confidently predicted that other features and services on the phone such as speakerphone, digital camera and FM radio, email and internet-based applications, and local or remote appliances and devices, can be controlled via the AAC device. Outcomes and findings have confirmed the main hypothesis of the thesis that, despite very limited mobility, speed, accuracy and vocal communication ability, users will be able to successfully operate the mobile phone itself, and use it for various modes of bidirectional communication with systems to which they choose to connect. The overall outcomes of the research have established that the benefits and usefulness of the mobile phone are so significant that they should become a necessity for people with a disability. It has been successfully demonstrated that, with the proper mechanisms and educational programs in place, the provision of accessible mobile phones for people with disabilities can significantly improve their quality of life through increased range of accessible activities, and will improve their independence, engagement with their peers, safety, security and self-esteem.

Vamvakousis, Zacharias. "Digital musical instruments for people with physical disabilities". Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/395189.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Playing a musical instrument has been shown to have a positive impact in the life of individuals in many different ways. Nevertheless, due to physical disabilities, some people are unable to play conventional musical instruments. In this dissertation, we consider different types of physical disabilities and implement specific digital musical instruments suitable for people with disabilities of each type. Firstly, we consider the case of people with limited sensorimotor upper limb functions, and we construct low-cost digital instruments for three different scenarios. Results indicate that the constructed prototypes allow musical expression and improve the quality of life of these users. Secondly, we consider disabilities such as tetraplegia or locked-in syndrome with unaffected eye-movements. For individuals with such conditions, we propose the EyeHarp, a gaze-controlled digital music instrument, and develop specific target selection algorithms which maximize the temporal and spatial accuracy required in music performance. We evaluate the instrument on subjects without physical disabilities, both from an audience and performer perspective. Results indicate that the EyeHarp has a steep learning curve and it allows expressive music performances. Finally, we examine the case of brain-controlled music interfaces. We mainly focus in auditory event related potential-based interfaces. In particular, we investigate and evaluate how timbre, pitch and spatialization auditory cues affect the performance of such interfaces.

"Tongue drive: a wireless tongue-operated assistive technology for people with severe disabilities". Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/45887.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The main objective of the presented research is to design, fabricate, fully characterize, and assess the usability and functionality of a novel wireless tongue-operated assistive technology, called Tongue Drive System (TDS), that allows individuals with severe physical disabilities (such as quadriplegics) to effectively access computers, drive powered wheelchairs, and control environments using their voluntary tongue motion. The system can wirelessly detect users' tongue movements using an array of magnetic sensors, and a magnetic tracer secured on the tongue, and translate them into a set of user-defined commands in real time, which can then be used to communicate with target devices in users' environment. The principal advantage of the TDS is that a combination of magnetic sensors and a small permanent magnet can capture a large number of tongue movements, each of which can represent one specific command. A set of dedicated tongue movements can be configured as specific commands for each individual user based on his/her preferences, lifestyle, and remaining abilities. As a result, this technology can benefit a wide range of potential users with different types of disabilities. The work carried out in this dissertation is largely split into three portions: (1) Development, fabrication and characterization of external TDS (eTDS) prototypes to verify the concept of TDS that is detecting and extracting user's intention through their voluntary tongue motion, utilizing a combination of magnetic sensors and a small magnet, as well as the application of this idea in the context of assistive technology. This part of the work is presented in Chapters IV, V and VI. (2) Assessment of the TDS performance in medium term usage for both computer access and wheelchair control. The main purpose of this work was to gain valuable insight into the TDS learning process and its current limiting factors, which could lead the way in designing new generations of TDS with improved usability. This portion of the work is described in Chapter VII. (3) Development and performance assessment of a multimodal TDS (mTDS), that operates based on the information collected from two independent input channels: the tongue motion and speech. This multimodal system expands the access beyond one input channel and therefore improves the speed of access by increasing the information transfer bandwidth between users and computers. This part of the work is presented in Chapters VIII and IX. This dissertation has contributed to the innovation and advancement of the start-of-the-art assistive technology research by exploring, realizing and validating the use of tongue motion as a voluntary motor output to substitute some of the lost arm and hand functions in people with severe disabilities for computer access, wheelchair navigation, and environmental control.

Virtual Reality has countless potential applications for the treatment and development of people with intellectual and multiple disabilities. A combination of traditional cognitive treatment and virtual reality-based methods can offer an effective, safe and interactive approach to the treatment of individuals with disabilities. Based on that, a computational method was proposed to develop a virtual reality system for supporting the cognitive and gross motor coordination development of those people, in a way that makes them more autonomous and able to do daily tasks, so improving their community participation, hence their social inclusion, by simulating and training common tasks people usually do on a daily basis. One of the main concerns of this work was to develop a low cost system, using standard and accessible devices. Furthermore, a hand-based manipulation made by augmented reality markers into the virtual reality environment was proposed, for providing a real-world experience, because, considering the cognitive and motor impairments of the participants, an interaction performed with their own hand would be easier, more intuitive and effective. The results of the experiments demonstrated the effectiveness and feasibility of using virtual reality technologies for the cognitive and motor coordination training of people with intellectual and multiple disabilities, showing that the participants were able to do the task 40% faster on average in the case study 1, which is basically a simulator where the participant should going shopping in a supermarket, and also showing an improvement of 41% related to the mistakes made in the case study 2, in which the patient must to go through a series of challenges that train the gross motor coordination and body balance. Based on the data analysis done after the intervention and also based on the physiotherapist's observation, it was possible to prove that virtual reality-based method can be effective in the cognitive and motor skills development of people with intellectual disabilities.

Abstract (sommario):
This is a qualitative study of one student’s use of assistive technology in the public school system from preschool to fourth grade. The data collected for this case study include interviews, participant observation, field and diary notes, video tapes, and other documents including school records and a teacher memoir. Throughout the study, the goals were to stay open to and reflect emerging patterns rather than to fit data into previously determined categories. The report describes how Michael--with cerebral palsy that affects his speech and prevents his standing or holding a pencil--used computers, augmentative communication devices, and other electronic technology. On one level the report becomes the story of a student who moves from a separate special education facility into an elementary school where he is integrated fulltime into a fourth grade class. Discussion and conclusions explore (1) types of support he required, (2) barriers to technology use as well as problems of "abandonment" of technology acquired, (3) the effect of integration into general education on his use of technology, and (4) how providing assistive technology influences and changes teachers’ roles.

Abstract (sommario):
Cities have employed technologies in several domains to improve the delivery of public services, attend citizens\' demands, and measure the consumption of natural resources. Known as Smart Cities, these initiatives aim to increase the overall citizens\' quality of life, and they have already had a positive impact on the way citizens interact with urban spaces, services, and with each other. On the other hand, urban spaces can be considered as a threat to the independence and autonomy of people with disabilities. In fact, according to the Social Approach, disability is not in the individual, but in society and the environment, which does not provide adequate conditions for the individual to fully participate and be a citizen of social, professional, educational, recreational activities, and so on. Society and the environment need to be corrected and their deficiencies compensated to include a significant portion of the population that is excluded from a range of activities when their abilities are not addressed in urban communication processes. Although this group of citizens has gained access to education, work and leisure, it is necessary to confront the city and all its challenges in order to enjoy these rights. In order to extend the benefits of Smart Cities to people with disabilities, we first proposed the idea of an Inclusive Smart City, which employs Smart Cities technology to provide a better urban experience for people with disabilities while overcoming accessibility barriers in urban spaces. To achieve this goal, we began using a multi-instrument approach to collect data from different stakeholders - people with disabilities, professionals that work with people with disabilities, accessibility-related experts, and policymakers -, aiming at understanding the obstacles that people with disabilities face when they are moving around the city, the strategies they use to solve unexpected problems, and how they interact with other people and with urban facilities. Based on an empirical observation, literature review and results collected using this multiinstrument approach, we first defined Inclusive Smart Cities. Then, we proposed some tools to support practitioners and researchers involved in the development of digital urban assistive technologies with the Inclusive Smart City\'s vision in mind: a list of requirements, a political structure, an implementation/operation methodology, a business model, a conceptual model, and a system architecture. According to the conceptual model we introduced, people with disabilities are able to interact with inclusive smart objects that are available in urban spaces to obtain information about the environment around them, enabling them to navigate and explore cities in an innovative way. In Inclusive Smart Cities, inclusive smart objects provide people with disabilities with user-adapted information and services, focusing on the individuals\' abilities rather than their disabilities. Moreover, the system architecture is based on equipping users and the environment with smart technologies, aiming at supporting a symbiotic relationship between citizens and inclusive smart objects, a web-based user interface to enable public agents and local authorities to register and maintain the information required by the Inclusive Smart City platform, and the Cloud infrastructure, responsible for storing system data and processing user requests. Finally, we further demonstrated a Proof of Concept to assess the experience that people with disabilities would have when using an Inclusive Smart City solution. To accomplish that, we mapped a block of Paulista Avenue, in São Paulo, Brazil, as a sequence of QR codes. In a simulated circuit, when users read each code, they received location-based information and services related to the object linked to the code. The participants evaluated the UrbanAssist application positively and recognized the relevance of the functionalities and resources provided by the application, which gave them an inventive interface to explore the urban environment in a new, safer and effective way. In conclusion, this new technology has the potential not only to improve the independence and autonomy of people with disabilities in urban spaces, but also to enable them to play a proactive role in society as a whole.
Abstract (sommario):
The design of Assistive Technology (AT) products that are highly functional as well satisfactory is presents many challenges. Various types of input are used in design of AT products to help overcome them. A study was conducted to gather data on the impact that different types of input (from simulation tools, a professional therapist, and end users) during the design of an AT product has on the effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction of the final design. The results show that input from stakeholders (end users or a therapist) can be very effective. However, effectiveness of the input is influenced by many factors and its impact on the design can be highly variable. Input from simulation tools was also found to be equally effective. Implications of these findings for the process of designing AT products are discussed.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Technology and disability are both terms laden with associations, values, meanings and even myths. This becomes clear in this research when both terms are described in the first part, and the various understandings of the terms are explained. When the two terms are considered in relation to each other, the result is a series of questions and ethical problems. In this assignment the focus is specifically on these questions and ethical problems that arise out of the relationship between technology and disability. The research is not done from a natural science perspective (with regard to technology) and lor a medical perspective (with regards to disability), but from a philosophical-ethical perspective. The main aim of this research is to think about what the role of technology is in the life of the disabled in general and what ethical questions arise from it. To form a philosophical-ethical perspective the question is asked: should technology be accepted unequivocally as something that always contributes to the humanization of the disabled? More specifically the assignment focuses on the issue: does cochlear implants contribute to the humanization of the deaf? The potential problematic relationship between the concepts is clear from the separate discussions. The limitations and problems of cochlear implants as an example of technology is shown when it is placed within the framework of a humanizing relationship. It is clear that technology can not be accepted unequivocally as something that always contributes to the humanization of the disabled. The research emphasizes that disability is much more than physical limitations and that compensating for the limitations through technology does not always address all the aspects of a disabled person's life - and can consequently have a dehumanizing effect. A more holistic approach is considered - one in which all the aspects of being human is addressed. The unique challenges of the South African context is discussed shortly and in conclusion the necessity of an "ethics of responsibility" is shown. Reflection on technology and disability is in the end reflection on life and the mysteries of life. Disability that reminds us of our limitations and shortcomings, also reminds us that life is not in our control and that a big part of living is an unsolvable riddle, a mystery.

The purpose of this project was to design, create, and implement a pilot for an adapted physical education (APE), DVD-Video teaching aid. This creative project has resulted in a DVD-Video that can be used as an instructional tool and resource for physical educators. It follows the teaching methods and skills from the wheelchair basketball chapter in Davis (2002), featuring strategies and ideas that can aid in the successful teaching of physical education (basketball) to individuals of all abilities. The use of interactive DVD-Video in a learning environment is seen as an innovative and exciting delivery method for instructional purposes. It is proposed that the majority of learners would enjoy using, and acquire a very significant learning experience from using, interactive DVD-Video instruction. Therefore, it is anticipated that physical educators would get a meaningful APE training experience from an interactive instructional DVD-Video such as the one piloted for this creative project.

Abstract (sommario):
While developing an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) application aimed at assisting persons with disabilities, it is important to take their challenges and needs into consideration. Simultaneously, it is important to understand the difficulty in designing a universal ICT product for them owing to their conflicting needs and capabilities. Additionally, many of them face economic hardships. Therefore, the issue of how to price these ICT applications arises. This research follows a case study of an ICT application devised by a Salta Friends AB to increase the social involvement of people with disabilities. It is a qualitative research conducted with the help of 15 interviews of different stakeholders of the application. These interviews provide insights that will help in mapping their different needs and challenges. The focus of the challenges is on the general, social, and technological context faced by the end-user. Based on these insights, factors have been recommended to be considered while targeting the appropriate customers and users for ICT applications. It also discusses the alternate sources of income that can exist for these applications by identifying a different customer. And finally, the research explains why including the persons with disabilities at an earlier stage in the product development process helps ease the selection of the right customers and users along with devising the right pricing model. The research also provides propositions and suggestions for Salta Friends AB and their next steps.

Abstract (sommario):
It is noticed that the technological quest to make life easier and promote functional abilities of people with disabilities. Given this model and an inclusive society, with a commitment to ensure that these people are not excluded from common activities, this research presents the conception and the development of a virtual keyboard interface nominated Mousekey, and discusses how this assistive technology can promote written for people with mobility disabilities. To understand the proposed objectives of this study, it chose a qualitative research, case study. Survey participants were five people literate, but with motor disabilities to write, that "can not in any way" or has "great difficulty". For data collection, held two meetings with these fellows, who used the technology designed, two of them with Spinal Muscular amyotrophy, two with Muscular Dystrophy, and one with Dystonia Movement. Through ergonomics verification protocol, analysis of interviews and direct observation, verified the appropriateness of the use of this tool in the process of writing, communication and interaction, using this virtual keyboard. For three research subjects, the Mousekey made writing easier, reducing the time and muscle fatigue, while for the other two subjects Mousekey writing became possible because they have not adapted to other technologies that favored. The potential of technological development for use of the most several human potentials was observed in this validation. The textual production showed that the syllables in Mousekey take the subject to rethink your learning and writing process to reduce your time and effortless. The typing manners made possible the adaptation of the application to the users' different needs. In a general way, the data show that Mousekey-UFRGS can assist the need of the participants' writing in their expectations, being Functional, Wearable and Accessible. The considerations invite to the reflection of the human potential, of the force of the life in their longings and aspirations, and of the how temporary and unexpected it can be the impossible term.

Abstract (sommario):
This qualitative study develops a model of a virtual community for people with longterm, severe physical or mobility disabilities. The model also has implications for the wider community of people with disabilities. The study uses the Strauss and Corbin grounded theory methodology to inform the investigation from which a systematic theory has been developed. On the basis of this theory, the study proposes strategies for implementing the virtual community model. In-depth interviews were conducted with twelve Queenslanders with paraplegia, quadriplegia or other severe, long-term physical or mobility disabilities and with six health care professionals, service providers, information personnel and policy advisers involved in their well-being. The methodology used one interview question to determine their experiences and perceptions regarding virtual communities and the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT). Each interview explored in detail the elements, enablers and barriers behind the usage of ICT and/or assistive technology. The personal responses and narratives of the people with disabilities who use the technology and their allied health care professionals were analysed and interpreted for meaning before the transcripts were returned to these participants for validation. Rich explanations were derived. Details of the various response categories of these interviews were analysed as part of the grounded theory, constant comparison methodology, and the relationship to the literature was considered. These de-constructed meanings were compared and contrasted with those in the current literature. The central theme to emerge from these narratives is that people with long-term disabilities regain a sense of control and independence in their lives through the use of ICT, as they move towards an on-line community. Other major themes that emerged from being on-line indicated that being on-line tended to break down people's isolation, while potentially changing the work paradigm (both vexed issues for people with disabilities). Information and communications technology and on-line communities offer ways to enhance every person's inclusion, participation and empowerment in our society. The primary outcome of the study is a theory regarding the character of virtual communities for people with long-term, severe mobility impairments that stakeholders may consider whenever such a virtual community is proposed. The theory is represented as a virtual community model. The model identifies the need for "a sense of control" as the foundational element of virtual communities for the disabled, and distinguishes the key domains in which disabled people participate in virtual communities. The barriers and enablers to their participation are specified within it. The model also provides a framework within which virtual communities can be facilitated. It melds six types of e-communities or sets of well-developed discrete categories (for example, themes, concepts) that the data from this study revealed: education-oriented, fantasy-oriented, information-oriented, interestoriented, relationship-oriented and transaction-oriented, depending on the type(s) of consumer need(s) to be met. The study concludes that although the technology itself provides strategies for independence and thus facilitates self-empowerment, it is also capable of being disempowering. Many interviewees referred to this aspect as a "double-edged sword". Empowerment and dis-empowerment are intersecting processes because of digital divide and information literacy issues and this "double-edged sword", which virtual reality presents for people with physical disabilities. Based on the new knowledge and the model as the outcomes of this study, a range of recommendations are discussed that have application in the community for persons with mobility impairments.

Abstract (sommario):
The author explores the current state of information exchange and access in the procurement process for mobility assistive equipment. While the idealized model is of a linear process starting with a need and ending with the purchase, in practice the procedures for acquiring a device such as a wheelchair or electric scooter can be a time consuming task that involves client, family, medical care specialists, vendors, manufacturers, insurance companies and possibly alternate sources of funding. This study utilized Participatory Action Research (PAR) to collect both qualitative and quantitative data about information sources such as the Internet, the medical community, and vendors. The findings of this study suggest that in spite of the presence of the Internet, overall primary sources are similar to the traditional model and that for most there is no one source that could be easily accessed for information. A brief examination is made of the “Information landscape” utilized in the process and a brief discussion of two relatively unmentioned information sources: expos and the wheelchair sports community.

Abstract (sommario):
The inclusion of people with deficiency in the work market can be a differential in the life quality of these individuals, being the participation on an equal way in the society, respecting the rights and obligations is still a challenge. Before that, there was the emerging of a legislation turned more to the inclusion, we can cite the Law 8213, created in 1991, the Quotes' Law began a process of more valuation of this part of the population in relation to the work market. The challenge of the companies is not easy, as we talk about including an amount of the population that, historically, was socially marginalized, many times presenting without qualification to work on the jobs places. This thesis presents the development of an immersive system and its evaluation focusing on making people with intellectual deficiency able to the work inclusion. The research is technological-qualitative, and the main goal is to show how a system that uses the Immersive Environment concepts can, through the mediation process, in the social-historical perspective, help to make it able and to eliminate boundaries in these students' learning. The Virtual Solassist Immersive Environment was developed using an engine of an UDK game and it was validated in a company that participates in the research. The study was performed with 11 students, with intellectual deficiency, the most excluded amount of the work market. The usage of the developed system, followed by the analysis of the mediations, highlighted categories that showed the viability of its usage, being an Assistive Technology for its labor insertion. This paper also presents contributions to the Computer Science through the development of an Immersive Environment, projected to make possible the mediation of people with intellectual deficiency, aiming their labor inclusion.

Cities have used technologies in anumber of areas to improve the delivery ofpublic services, meet the demands ofcitizens, and measure the consumption ofnatural resources. Known as Smart Cities, these initiatives aim to improve the qualityof life of citizens and have already had apositive impact on how citizens interactwith urban spaces, services and with eachother. On the other hand, urban spaces canbe considered as a threat to theindependence and autonomy of people withdisabilities. We used a multi-instrumentapproach to collect data from differentstakeholders - people with disabilities, professionals working with people withdisabilities, accessibility experts and policymakers - to understand the barriers faced bypeople with disabilities. We first developeda definition of the Smart Inclusive City, aswell as proposed tools to supportpractitioners and researchers engaged in thedevelopment of digital assistivetechnologies: an implementation andoperation methodology, a conceptual model,a business model, and a system architectureare proposed in this thesis

Abstract (sommario):
The inability to express a decision or a feeling, both provoked by a physical or psychological trauma, exposes the individual to personal and social impacts that sometimes may cause problems in his intellect or live in society. Thinking about this need and studying the methods currently available to this group of people, it was developed an application for tablets and smartphones which helps persons with difficulties in oral communication. Method: Collecting information with professionals who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication during their daily work, and making a deep study about the first words and sentences that are necessary when someone wants to be introduced in a new language, we created and classified a database of phrases and expressions. They were associated to the alternative communication symbols in order to be part of a communication board for cellphones and tablets running Android operational system. The application reproduces the sound corresponding to the meaning of the activated image through touch. Results: 400 images with sound make part of the system created as well as the possibility of the user to edit his own board with pictures of the collection. When Falante ́s interface and the architecture of the software used in mobile devices were presented to the volunteers, 80% of them was able to use the system after few minutes of instruction, and 90% used the application at some moment during the therapy to express needs. It proves the benefits that techniques of alternative communication in mobile devices can bring to people with communication difficulties. Conclusion: The prototype was able to reproduce efficiently the sound related to the meaning of the images, resulting in effective communication for children with speech difficulties. It was possible to observe positive emotions expressed by users when their desires and needs were understood and attended. Among the major positive feelings, we point out wellbeing, calmness and courage expressed by the users.

Abstract (sommario):
With the advancements in medicine and welfare systems, the average life span of modern human beings is expanding, creating a new market for elderly care and assistive technology. Along with the development of assistive devices based on traditional aids such as voice-readers, electronic wheelchairs, and prosthetic limbs, a robotic platform is one of the most suitable platforms for providing multi-purpose assistance in human life. This research focuses on the transference of environmental perception to a human user through the use of interactive multi-modal feedback and an assistive robotic platform. A novel framework for haptic telepresence is presented to solve the problem, and state-of-the-art methodologies from computer vision, haptics, and robotics are utilized. The objective of this research is to design a framework that achieves the following: 1) This framework integrates visual perception from heterogeneous vision sensors, 2) it enables real-time interactive haptic representation of the real world through a mobile manipulation robotic platform and a haptic interface, and 3) it achieves haptic fusion of multiple sensory modalities from the robotic platform and provides interactive feedback to the human user. Specifically, a set of multi-disciplinary algorithms such as stereo-vision processes, three-dimensional (3D) map-building algorithms, and virtual-proxy based haptic volume representation processes will be integrated into a unified framework to successfully accomplish the goal. The application area of this work is focused on, but not limited to, assisting people with visual impairment with a robotic platform by providing multi-modal feedback of the environment.

Abstract (sommario):
Customization is essential for Computer Assistive Technologies, or High Assistive Technology (HAT), to effectively meet the needs of people with disabilities in their daily activities and in rehabilitation therapy. These technologies are currently provided in a standardized way, and therapists have to adapt them so that their patients can use them. Participatory design (PD), as a methodology that actively involves the user in the design process, is very adequate to customize HATs, allowing active participation by users with impairments as co-designers of their solutions. However, few are the studies presenting recommendations to PD including these users. No research work was spotted considering PD methods to include people with disabilities, independently of their impairment. Aiming to fill this gap, this research proposes PD4CAT Participatory Design for Customized Assistive Technology, a method to aid multidisciplinary teams to conceive customized computer solutions using PD for actively involving the team - which includes persons with impairments, their therapists and caretakers in the design and development cycle. The methodology adopted in this work for obtaining the PD4CAT proposal was the research-action, in two cycles that inserted the researchers in rehabilitation institutions. In the process, two case studies were conducted for developing customized HATs for two patients with cerebral palsy, with motor and verbal impairments, one being a forty-six-year old adult (M) and a four-year-old child (MI). This process resulted in the guidelines composing PD4CAT, as well as the AT solutions.
