Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The topic of this chapter is the acquisition of lexical and grammatical aspect. Given wide cross-linguistic variation in aspect expression, the learnability issues center around form-meaning associations: how do learners determine the meaning of a certain aspectual form? Focusing on the literature on telicity and on the perfective-imperfective distinction, two main results stand out. Predicate telicity is easier than compositional telicity. The completion entailment of perfective is acquired at different ages across different languages, somewhere between 2.6 and 5. One novel direction of research asks whether aspect is acquired easier in some languages than in others. The answers will uncover possibly universal aspectual primitives and heuristics that guide children with their task of acquiring temporal meanings.

Ranade, Gireeja V., e Lav R. Varshney. The Role of Information Patterns in Designing Crowdsourcing Contests. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198816225.003.0007.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Crowdsourcing contests are used widely by organizations as a means of accomplishing tasks. These organizations would like to maximize the utility obtained through worker submissions to the contest. If this utility is greater than that obtained through alternative means of completing the task (e.g. hiring someone), the task should be crowdsourced. We analyze the utility generated for different types of tasks and provide a rule-of-thumb crowdsourcing contest design. Knowledge about the relative strengths of the workers participating in the contest is an important factor in contest design. When the contest organizer is unsure about the strength of the workers, crowdsourcing contests deliver higher utility than would hiring or assignment. Disseminating worker strength information acts as a lever to influence participation and increase utility in the contest. Finally, while crowdsourcing is a good option for generic tasks, it might perform poorly for highly specialized tasks.

Lobina, David J. On recursive parsing. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198785156.003.0006.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The processing of a linguistic expression, when viewed as a complex of (Specifier)-Head-Complement(s) phrases (SHCs), whilst suggestive of a recursive solution—that is, a sentence is a matrix SHC (subject-verb-object) composed of internal SHCs and the completion of the overall task is divisible into smaller but equivalent subtasks—in fact proceeds iteratively. This is here shown by manipulating the memory load of processing SHCs and measuring the reaction times of participants to extraneous tones placed at specific places within a sentence. The results show that there is a decreasing tendency in reaction times across a sentence, this pattern being explained in terms of two different types of uncertainty, a linguistic type and a more perceptual type. The results are discussed in the context of classic results with the tone-monitoring technique and future work along these lines is announced.

Young, Alasdair R. 5. The Single Market From Stagnation to Renewal? Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/hepl/9780199689675.003.0005.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This chapter examines the renewal of the single European market (SEM) as a major turning point in European policy-making. It presents the argument that many of the analyses that proliferated in response to the Single European Act (SEA) and the SEM overstated their novelty and understated some of the surrounding factors that helped to induce their ‘success’. The chapter first provides a historical background on how the single market was established before discussing the politics of policy-making in the SEM. It explains how new ideas about market regulation permeated the European Union policy process and facilitated legislative activism and important changes in the policy-implementing processes, culminating in the ‘1992 programme’ to make the single market a reality. Although the task of ‘completing’ the single market remains unfinished, the chapter shows that it has moved to the heart of European integration and altered the pattern of state–market relations in Europe.

Prassl, Jeremias. Humans as a Service. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198797012.001.0001.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The rise of the gig economy is disrupting business models across the globe. Platforms’ digital work intermediation has had a profound impact on traditional conceptions of the employment relationship. The completion of ‘tasks’, ‘gigs’, or ‘rides’ in the (digital) crowd fundamentally challenges our understanding of work in modern labour markets: gone are the stable employment relationships between firms and workers, replaced by a world in which everybody can be ‘their own boss’ and enjoy the rewards—and face the risks—of independent businesses. Is this the future of work? What are the benefits and challenges of crowdsourced work? How can we protect consumers and workers without stifling innovation? Humans as a Service provides a detailed account of the growth and operation of gig-economy platforms, and develops a blueprint for solutions to the problems facing on-demand workers, platforms, and their customers. Following a brief introduction to the growth and operation of on-demand platforms across the world, the book scrutinizes competing narratives about ‘gig’ work. Drawing on a wide range of case studies, it explores how claims of ‘disruptive innovation’ and ‘micro-entrepreneurship’ often obscure the realities of precarious work under strict algorithmic surveillance, and the return to a business model that has existed for centuries. Humans as a Service shows how employment law can address many of these problems: gigs, tasks, and rides are work—and should be regulated as such. A concluding chapter demonstrates the broader benefits of a level playing field for consumers, taxpayers, and innovative entrepreneurs.

Abstract (sommario):
At a time when I had completely abandoned the dream of completing my Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree, which took unreasonably many years; dropped out of University and didn’t want to be bothered; cried my love for the study of Law to sleep, and didn’t want to be woken up; I heard Bishop TD Jakes’ teaching on YouTube. He said, “Most life-giving experiences as a Christian come through death experiences. If nothing in you ever dies, nothing in you will ever live. When you start praying for abundant life, you’re praying for abundant death. The more you die in one area, the more you live in another. Whenever God tries to make something live, he makes something die; and the more something dies, the more something is going to live”. My sister, Lerato Florah Mmolaeng, who will forever be my hero, then stepped into my life, because she believed that I had what it takes to complete my degree. She put her own dreams on hold, and invested all kinds of resources into my life. At that time, I was a “human project” that didn’t hold much promise, and it didn’t look like I was ever going to accomplish this dream. However, with her support and hard work, I accomplished the task, and obtained my LL.B. after many years. I’m particularly inspired by my sister who uplifted me, and motivated me to continue to work hard and “sit on it until it hatched”! This book is dedicated to my sister, and to others like her, who have given up much, and sacrificed their own dreams, so that a loved one may accomplish a dream. May this book, and my dedicated life, be an everlasting blessing to these heroes!
