Puranam, Phanish. Division of labor. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199672363.003.0003.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Division of labor involves task division and task allocation. An extremely important consequence of task division and allocation is the creation of interdependence between agents. In fact, division of labor can be seen as a process that converts interdependence between tasks into interdependence between agents. While there are many ways in which the task structure can be chunked and divided among agents, two important heuristic approaches involve division of labor by activity vs. object. I show that a choice between these two forms of division of labor only arises when the task structure is non-decomposable, but the product itself is decomposable. When the choice arises, a key criterion for selection between activity vs. object-based division of labor is the gain from specialization relative to the gain from customization.

Abstract (sommario):
The primary role of the Type 42 destroyers was providing air defense for the fleet. With their long-range sensors, the ships could also act as radar pickets, sailing ahead of a task group. HMS Southampton was the eighth ship originally destined to be a 16-ship class – two of these ships have been exported to Argentina. The type 42 comprised eight Batch 1 vessels, four Batch 2 and four Batch 3 Stretched Type 42.

McDonald, Paula, Melinda Laundon e Penny Williams. Automated management in work and employment. Queensland University of Technology, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5204/book.eprints.248702.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
As artificial intelligence becomes more sophisticated, automated decision-making is replacing human decisions about work, management and employment issues. This Briefing Paper draws on research, media sources and legal cases relating to automated work and employment to investigate the implications of this broad transformation to the digital management of work. Three dimensions of work and employment are discussed where digital management is already having a significant impact: recruitment and selection, task allocation and measuring productivity. The types, capacities and impacts of automated technologies are examined.

Puranam, Phanish. The Exercise of Authority. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199672363.003.0005.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
From an organization design perspective, authority has three very specific roles. First, authority can be the basis on which solutions to any of the universal problems of organizing (task division, task allocation, information and motivation) are selected and enforced. This is the authority to design. Second, authority can itself be a solution to problems of motivation and coordination. This is the authority to direct subordinates. Third, authority is used to resolve exceptions arising from imperfections in the solutions to the fundamental problems of organizing. This is authority as dispute resolution. These facets of authority are often bundled together in organizations, though it is not obvious if this must universally be so. I argue that authority can be delegated in two fundamentally different ways: in terms of a commitment to refrain from ex ante or ex post intervention.

Paul, Torremans. Part II Preliminary Topics, 3 Classification. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780199678983.003.0003.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This chapter discusses the classification of the cause of action and the classification of a rule of law as they relate to private international law. Classification of the cause of action refers to the allocation of the question raised by the factual situation before the court to its correct legal category, whereas classification of a rule of law is the identification of the department of law under which a particular legal rule falls. After explaining what ‘classification of the cause of action’ and ‘classification of a rule of law’ mean, the chapter considers the basis on which classification is made. In particular, it looks at two cases that illustrate the international spirit in which English judges fulfil the task of classification. It also examines the classification of an English rule and classification of a foreign rule (parental consent to marry, bona vacantia).

Gardner, Heidi. Teamwork and Collaboration in Professional Service Firms. A cura di Laura Empson, Daniel Muzio, Joseph Broschak e Bob Hinings. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199682393.013.21.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The nature of teamwork in professional service firms, as in many other knowledge-intensive environments, is evolving from highly structured project teams to more fluid, open-ended, peer-to-peer collaboration such as that between powerful, high-autonomy partners. This shift is especially challenging because senior-level collaboration requires peers from different practice groups or offices with different sub-cultures to negotiate task allocation, credit recognition, and decision-making norms, which can be difficult and politically charged. Increased partner-level collaboration is further complicated by other trends in the PSF arena such as expertise specialization, heightened professional mobility, and increased competition. Yet, this phenomenon remains largely under-researched and under-theorized. The chapter therefore lays out a research agenda focusing on opportunities to better understand peer collaboration in PSFs. In addition, the chapter identifies ways that recent changes in the professional sector challenge our understanding of traditional teamwork, and it identifies specific gaps that deserve scholarly attention.
