Abstract (sommario):
The current national security environment and fiscal tightening make it necessary for the Department of Defense to transition away from a threat based acquisition mindset towards a capability based approach to acquire portfolios of systems. This requires that groups of interdependent systems must regularly interact and work together as systems of systems to deliver desired capabilities. Technological advances, especially in the areas of electronics, computing, and communications also means that these systems of systems are tightly integrated and more complex to acquire, operate, and manage. In response to this, the Department of Defense has turned to system architecting principles along with capability based analysis. However, because of the diversity of the systems, technologies, and organizations involved in creating a system of systems, the design space of architecture alternatives is discrete and highly non-linear. The design space is also very large due to the hundreds of systems that can be used, the numerous variations in the way systems can be employed and operated, and also the thousands of tasks that are often required to fulfill a capability. This makes it very difficult to fully explore the design space. As a result, capability based analysis of system of systems architectures often only considers a small number of alternatives. This places a severe limitation on the development of capabilities that are necessary to address the needs of the war fighter. The research objective for this manuscript is to develop a Rapid Architecture Alternative Modeling (RAAM) methodology to enable traceable Pre-Milestone A decision making during the conceptual phase of design of a system of systems. Rather than following current trends that place an emphasis on adding more analysis which tends to increase the complexity of the decision making problem, RAAM improves on current methods by reducing both runtime and model creation complexity. RAAM draws upon principles from computer science, system architecting, and domain specific languages to enable the automatic generation and evaluation of architecture alternatives. For example, both mission dependent and mission independent metrics are considered. Mission dependent metrics are determined by the performance of systems accomplishing a task, such as Probability of Success. In contrast, mission independent metrics, such as acquisition cost, are solely determined and influenced by the other systems in the portfolio. RAAM also leverages advances in parallel computing to significantly reduce runtime by defining executable models that are readily amendable to parallelization. This allows the use of cloud computing infrastructures such as Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud and the PASTEC cluster operated by the Georgia Institute of Technology Research Institute (GTRI). Also, the amount of data that can be generated when fully exploring the design space can quickly exceed the typical capacity of computational resources at the analyst's disposal. To counter this, specific algorithms and techniques are employed. Streaming algorithms and recursive architecture alternative evaluation algorithms are used that reduce computer memory requirements. Lastly, a domain specific language is created to provide a reduction in the computational time of executing the system of systems models. A domain specific language is a small, usually declarative language that offers expressive power focused on a particular problem domain by establishing an effective means to communicate the semantics from the RAAM framework. These techniques make it possible to include diverse multi-metric models within the RAAM framework in addition to system and operational level trades. A canonical example was used to explore the uses of the methodology. The canonical example contains all of the features of a full system of systems architecture analysis study but uses fewer tasks and systems. Using RAAM with the canonical example it was possible to consider both system and operational level trades in the same analysis. Once the methodology had been tested with the canonical example, a Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD) capability model was developed. Due to the sensitive nature of analyses on that subject, notional data was developed. The notional data has similar trends and properties to realistic Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses data. RAAM was shown to be traceable and provided a mechanism for a unified treatment of a variety of metrics. The SEAD capability model demonstrated lower computer runtimes and reduced model creation complexity as compared to methods currently in use. To determine the usefulness of the implementation of the methodology on current computing hardware, RAAM was tested with system of system architecture studies of different sizes. This was necessary since system of systems may be called upon to accomplish thousands of tasks. It has been clearly demonstrated that RAAM is able to enumerate and evaluate the types of large, complex design spaces usually encountered in capability based design, oftentimes providing the ability to efficiently search the entire decision space. The core algorithms for generation and evaluation of alternatives scale linearly with expected problem sizes. The SEAD capability model outputs prompted the discovery a new issue, the data storage and manipulation requirements for an analysis. Two strategies were developed to counter large data sizes, the use of portfolio views and top `n' analysis. This proved the usefulness of the RAAM framework and methodology during Pre-Milestone A capability based analysis.

This thesis presents an approach to applying Systems Architecture methods to the development of large, complex, commercial systems, particularly offshore oil and gas productions systems. The aim of this research was to assist BP in the development of concepts for a multi-billion dollar oil production system, particularly in the unprecedented deep water arctic locations prone to seismic activity, as well as in existing fields that must be extended. The thesis demonstrates that these systems can be decomposed and analyzed using rigorous, methodical system architecture thinking that archives and represents tacit knowledge in several graphical frameworks. The thesis breaks the architecture of oil and gas production systems into two problems. The first problem is the architecture of one facility and one reservoir; a classic problem of assigning function to form. The second problem is the architecture of multiple facilities and multiple reservoirs; a classic problem of connection and routing. For the first problem, the production process is decomposed using Object Process Methodology (OPM). The decompositions provide a methodology to capture industry knowledge that is not always explicitly stated and provides a framework to explore the entire architectural design space. The thesis then describes how these decompositions of general and specific oil systems can be used to develop software models, using the meta-language tool OPN (Object Process Network), that successfully generate thousands of architecture concepts. This set of feasible architectures can be prioritized and better understood using metrics in an effort to down-select to a handful of preferred concepts to be carried forward for more detailed study and eventual development.
(cont.) The approach to the second problem demonstrates that even a modest set of facilities and reservoirs have a huge number of connection possibilities. This space of connection possibilities is large and daunting, and typically is not fully explored. To solve the second problem the thesis presents two models that generate all the possible connection schemes between elements in a system, in this case oil facilities and reservoirs. It is then demonstrated that these possibilities can be prioritized through the use of metrics. The thesis presents a method that can identify new concepts, highlight preferred sets of concepts, and underline patterns common to those concepts. This method increases the architects' overall knowledge and understanding of the entire space of possibilities, and ensures that all options are considered in the development of complex systems.

In the period between 1993-1998 a vision was presented of an Automated Highway System developed under a contract naming Virginia Tech one of the three ITS Research Centers of Excellence in the United States by the Federal Highway Administration. The AHS envisioned would consist of a guideway constructed in the rights-of-way of the Interstate Highway System which would utilized magnetic levitation ("maglev") to propel closely-space, individual vehicles at high speeds with full longitudinal and lateral control. In this dissertation the system architecture is described in detail. The system architecture is organized according to system structural, system operational, and vehicle subsystem technological elements. The structural aspects are concerned with the decision making capability allocated between a vehicle and the guideway, the characteristics of the control and sensing equipment contained within the guideway, the traveling unit configuration, and certain of the vehicle's structural and equipment considerations. The operational aspects are concerned with vehicle entrainment policy, system fleet mixture, network type and control functions, and guideway lane separation requirements. The vehicle subsystem and the vehicle longitudinal and lateral control subsystem. The operational architecture concentrates on developing and evaluating strategies for forming platoons of vehicles on the guideway since the average platoon sizes determine the practical capacity of the guideway as well as the safety of operation. It is instructive to review how platoons form naturally on conventional highways as a prelude to developing a strategy for forming platoon on the AHS Maglev Guideway. A novel, non-linear car-following model called "car maneuvering" is explored by defining the stimuli on the right-hand side of the model in terms of several vehicles ahead of the response vehicle. In order to add still more realism in developing a strategy for platoon formation in a guideway under automatic control, an additional spacing dependent term is introduced to achieve a "magnetic coupling headway" between platooned vehicles. Once vehicles are magnetically coupled, the desired intraplatoon headway is maintained through attraction and repulsion. In this dissertation the term "architecture" is interpreted in the broadest possible sense based on the assumption that any transportation system intended to serve society throughout the 21st Century and beyond must address a hierarchy of goals and issues ranging from the strategic (sustainable development) to the tactical (the concept of operations) and including the in-between (interfacing with the existing transportation system). In the past, transportation planning, policy, investment and operating decisions have been made in isolation from each other with incomplete information inputs from a broad base of disciplines and sectors, without a synthesizing instrumentality. A new approach is described to promote the best informed decisions governing planning and management. The approach features a realistic framework for allocating public sector-private sector effort, an instrumentality for generating the knowledge needed to conceive and implement the new transportation paradigm, and a strategic vision for rallying support. The new approach to the problem begins with a strategic vision for society's AHS infrastructure. We believe that the strategic vision must be based on the concept of "sustainable development." To affect this new strategic vision, higher budgets will be a necessary, but not a sufficient condition. A fundamental Decision Support System (DSS) with knowledge bases with contributions from the braid spectrum of science and engineering disciplines, and a methodology based on system dynamics capable of synthesizing these contributions is proposed. The AHS Maglev Alternative is compared to a "Do-Nothing" Alternative and a "Traditional Expansion" Alternative using user and nonuser benefit analyses. The advantages of AHS Maglev are seen to be overwhelming. Moreover, the ability of AHS Maglev to alleviate airport congestion by reducing short and medium range of flights, and to serve as a structuring device for rational population distribution is shown.

In order to maximize operating time of an industrial machine and minimize stand-by time, service time and operating costs, a diagnostic system can be a useful tool. Diagnostic systems employ information already available in a machine’s control system (such as control signals, system state, sensor readings and so forth) to perform intelligent fault detection and localisation, and predict future faults and service needs.

CC Systems develops advanced electronics and control systems for industrial machines and vehicles operating in rough environments. One of their products is a diagnostic platform called Diagnostic Runtime Engine (DRE), supplying the customer with a tool for building a diagnostic system. The platform offers supervision of the control system. Actions are performed when it detects a possible fault or indication of a potential future fault. An action could be for example the creation of an alarm.

The DRE, as designed today, only works together with a control system running in an environment called CoDeSys. In this master thesis a new architecture of the platform is presented, with the objective to make the platform compatible with an arbitrary control system. A prototype is implemented to prove the concept of the suggested architecture model. A number of different standard diagnostic blocks, used for building the diagnostic system, are also suggested with the objective to make it easier for the user to employ the DRE. A proposition of how development with the diagnostic platform can proceed beyond this thesis is also presented.

A distributed architecture framework has been developed for NASA at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) as the basis for developing an extended series of space mission support data systems. The architecture is designed to include both mission development and operations. It specifically addresses the problems of standardizing a framework for which commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) applications and infrastructure are expected to provide most of the components of the systems. The resulting distributed architecture is developed based on a combination of a layered architecture, and carefully selected open standards. The layering provides the needed flexibility in mission design to support the wide variability of mission requirements. The standards are selected to address the most important interfaces, while not over constraining the implementation options.

In this thesis, I describe an architecture for network devices that is based on using pluggable system resource modules that can be composed together to create a close-to-optimal platform for a particular application mix and device. Frequently used applications execute efficiently, while infrequently used applications execute less efficiently. Metrics for calculating efficiencies and selected application domains and mixes are specified by individuals as opposed to one-size-fits- all metrics specified by manufacturers. I show that such a composable system architecture is effective in optimizing system performance with respect to user preferences and application requirements, while the modularity of the architecture introduces little overhead. I also explore opportunities that arise from segmenting devices into UI and computational resource components, and show that an automated design environment can be created that greatly simplifies custom device design, reducing time-to-market and lowering costs.
Network devices promise to provide a variety of user interfaces through which users can interact with network applications. The design of these devices stand in stark contrast to the design of personal computers in which new software content is accommodated by increased processor performance. Network device design, on the other hand, must take into consideration a variety of metrics including interactive performance, power consumption, battery life, transaction security, physical size and weight, and cost. Designing a general-purpose platform that caters to all of these metrics for all applications and devices is impractical. For an application mix, a processor architecture and platform can be designed that is optimized for a selected set of metrics, such as power consumption and battery life. Each of these optimized processor architectures and platforms will no doubt be applicable to a variety of devices. This suggests a modular system architecture for network devices that segments the computational resources from the device UI. Computational resources can be selected for a device UI that are optimized with respect to application mixes as well as to user preferences and metrics. Segmenting out the device UI reduces the complexity of device UIs, simplifying development and lowering costs. At the same time, with little electrical circuitry resident on device UIs, the selected platform can more fully optimize the entire device.

The fundamental issues in any discussion of a proposed system architecture must involve the relative quality of the architecture when compared to other proposals and the architecture's ability to satisfy the needs and abilities of the customer, the system environment and the system developer. While the latter issue can often be easily addressed through standard system architecture methods, the former comparative issue can often be quite difficult due to some of the uncertainty and ambiguity in the· relative merit of system architecture factors. In large government-funded space system architectures, which often span years of development/production and cost tens of billions of dollars, this difficulty is especially apparent and highlights the need for an effective method for comparative evaluation. This thesis research has developed a unique tool by which comparisons of system architectures ca.n be made. This technique, which is a. fuzzy set extension of the Axiomatic Design method, has the ability to incorporate and capture both technical and non-technical parameters that are vital to the comparison process. This tool is effectively applied to architectural proposals for the human exploration of Mars. As supporting objectives, the research examines the structure of advanced technology developments, explores the affects of the government budgetary process and comments on the government/contractor managerial relationship as they pertain to space system architectures.

On traditional operating systems only trusted software such as privileged servers or the kernel can manage resources. This thesis proposes a new approach, the exokernel architecture, which makes resource management unprivileged but safe by separating management from protection: an exokernel protects resources, while untrusted application-level software manages them. As a result, in an exokernel system, untrusted software (e.g., library operating systems) can implement abstractions such as virtual memory, file systems, and networking. Themain thrusts of this thesis are: (1) how to build an exokernel system; (2) whether it is possible to build a real one; and (3) whether doing so is a good idea. Our results, drawn from two exokernel systems [25, 48], show that the approach yields dramatic benefits. For example, Xok, an exokernel, runs a web server an order of magnitude faster than the closest equivalent on the same hardware, common unaltered Unix applications up to three times faster, and improves global system performance up to a factor of five. The thesis also discusses some of the new techniques we have used to remove the overhead of protection. Themost unusual technique, untrusted deterministic functions, enables an exokernel to verify that applications correctly track the resources they own, eliminating the need for it to do so. Additionally, the thesis reflects on the subtle issues in using downloaded code for extensibility and the sometimes painful lessons learned in building three exokernel-based systems.

This study proposes an Architectural Expert System (AES) to act as a design partner for architectural designers. Architectural designers are faced with a very complex task of searching a solution space, which is a labyrinth of several domains ranging from social to cultural, and from aesthetic to scientific. With the number of domains come a number of experts of that domain. After progressing through tedious analytical procedures involving the physical principles in architecture, and applying the knowledge of experience, the experts are able to convert the raw data into useful design guidelines.

Research in the field of artificial intelligence has developed techniques which can capture such expertise in a computer program, which then emulates the expert. This technology is know as Expert System (ES). This study has used this technology to develop a system to aid architectural design. An AES model is derived from literature review. As the nature of a system based on this model is complex and would require custom built software, an alternative is developed based on the derived model. Based on this alternative, a prototype is developed for energy audit and energy conservation by capturing the expertise of an energy conscious design expert. This prototype module is one component of the sub-system of AES and provides an example for further modules. Various areas such as design, architecture, artificial intelligence and expert systems technology, and energy conscious design and energy conservation converge, and become parts of this study.

The research described in this dissertation is a study of the application of measurement, or metrics for software engineering. This is not in itself a new idea; the concept of measuring software was first mooted close on twenty years ago. However, examination of what is a considerable body of metrics work, reveals that incorporating measurement into software engineering is rather less straightforward than one might pre-suppose and despite the advancing years, there is still a lack of maturity. The thesis commences with a dissection of three of the most popular metrics, namely Haistead's software science, McCabe's cyclomatic complexity and Henry and Kafura's information flow - all of which might be regarded as having achieved classic status. Despite their popularity these metrics are all flawed in at least three respects. First and foremost, in each case it is unclear exactly what is being measured: instead there being a preponderance of such metaphysical terms as complexIty and qualIty. Second, each metric is theoretically doubtful in that it exhibits anomalous behaviour. Third, much of the claimed empirical support for each metric is spurious arising from poor experimental design, and inappropriate statistical analysis. It is argued that these problems are not misfortune but the inevitable consequence of the ad hoc and unstructured approach of much metrics research: in particular the scant regard paid to the role of underlying models. This research seeks to address these problems by proposing a systematic method for the development and evaluation of software metrics. The method is a goal directed, combination of formal modelling techniques, and empirical ealiat%or. The met\io s applied to the problem of developing metrics to evaluate software designs - from the perspective of a software engineer wishing to minimise implementation difficulties, faults and future maintenance problems. It highlights a number of weaknesses within the original model. These are tackled in a second, more sophisticated model which is multidimensional, that is it combines, in this case, two metrics. Both the theoretical and empirical analysis show this model to have utility in its ability to identify hardto- implement and unreliable aspects of software designs. It is concluded that this method goes some way towards the problem of introducing a little more rigour into the development, evaluation and evolution of metrics for the software engineer.

Power outages are exponentially increasing because extreme weather conditions are occurring more frequently. In addition, the duration of the power outages are increasing. Unfortunately, the will to expand or convert the current electric grid is not there. The objective of this thesis is to design a new system - at a high level - that would protect homeowners from the effects of power outages. To do this, interviews were conducted with people who have actually experienced power outages during winter. Their preference for continued space heating during power outages prompted a design that uses natural gas fuel cell to power a furnace (or boiler) independent of the electric grid. The same system could also provide electricity to the homeowners, if the furnace is turned off. In addition to the system architecture design, surveys were conducted to determine pricing and financial analyses were performed to determine the commercial viability of the design. Consequently, the design proved to be too expensive. What's more, prices would have to drop significantly and / or other stakeholders, such as utility companies, insurance companies and governments, would have to cover most of the cost of the product for there to be a mass adoption.

The aircraft gas turbine product architecture and manufacturing infrastructure are used to show the importance in the relationship between the organizational architecture and product architecture. The product complexity, organizational complexity and new product development costs are compared for three major aircraft gas turbine producers spanning the market from 2500 pounds to 100,000 pounds of thrust. It is found that organizational response to product complexity varies widely, resulting in a factor of 2 to 3 in both cycle time and cost for new product development, depending on the enterprise. A relationship between the product complexity and organizational complexity is established based on the documented product development procedures within these companies, and a proportionality is observed between the product complexity derived from the procedures and the expended resources required to develop new products.

This dissertation describes the development of an architectural modeling methodology that supports the Navy's requirement to evaluate potential changes to gun weapon systems in order to identify potential software safety risks. The modeling methodology includes a tool (Eagle6) that is based on the Monterey Phoenix (MP) modeling methodology, and has the capability to create and verify MP models, execute formal assertions via pre-defined macro commands, and a visualization tool that generates graphical representations of model scenarios. The Eagle6 toolset has two scenario generation modes, Exhaustive Search for model verification within scope, and Random trace generation for statistical estimates of nonfunctional properties, such as performance. The dissertation demonstrates how the Eagle6 tool may improve the SSSTRP evaluation process by including a methodology to use formal assertions to test for software states that are considered unsafe.

Introduction: A great part of the world today is engaged in excruciating conflicts that threaten the afflicted regions locally besides holding global peace to ransom. Most of these conflicts take the form of territorial disputes that are often protracted and sap the energies out of the nation states. Kashmir, Sudan, Israel-Palestine and Sri-Lanka today are embroiled in a bitter dispute embittered by relentless bloodshed and deep-rooted animosity carried forward through generations. The disputed regions in themselves are a mute testimony of the abject neglect of its subjects by the central ruling body (could be a democratic government! a dictator or a monarch) and failure to provide some of the important political goods across the board for a long period of time. When weighed against some of the accepted norms of development indices like the GINI index, GDP, GDP per capita, infant mortality rates, HDI index, TI index, etc one would see that the disputed regions perform quite pathetically across most of the metrics and not without a reason. Nation states exist to provide political goods to people (Ref 1). However, quite unabashedly nation-states continue its tirade against each other over a piece of land pumping huge sums of public assets that could otherwise be diverted towards development efforts depressing benefits in both the disputed territory and on the whole. Territoriality is dogma that invokes strong reactions. As per Zartman (Ref 2) a state's territory is a collective good that is equally shared by the citizens of the state. This means that the territory is indivisible and is available in the same proportion to all the citizens. It is considered to be one of the three basic components--together with people and a government--which endow a state with a sovereign moral personality universally recognized by the law and the community of nations. Till the time the territoriality is perceived as a collective good, there is no room for territorial claims to erupt. They however occur when the "national territory"--or, what the state's authorities suppose to be the "national territory"--is no longer perceived as a common good by a concerned group of citizens and becomes a "need" for this specific group. Territorial claims are about the desacralization of this territorial absoluteness. They represent iconoclastic uprisings from "politically active communal groups" determined to question the absolutely sacred dogma of the state's territorial integrity. Thus fundamentally a territorial dispute is a process of deconstruction and de-institutionalization of the nation state's order and boundaries. The focus of this thesis is to understand the epistemology of a territorial dispute and develop a framework for creating a more effective conflict resolution design. This by no means is aimed at churning out a cook book kind of a recipe to solve all the territorial disputes that afflict the world. On the contrary, this work makes an attempt to trace the path as we move from a dispute system to a resolution system by understanding the underlYing architecture. It is in fact akin to taking a step backwards and revisiting the delicate theme of territorial disputes by dissecting it deeper to peel off the layers that wrap the core problem. We use the principles of systems thinking and system architecture in understanding the intrinsic nature of a territorial dispute by treating it as a system operating in a given environment. The systems thinking paradigm allows us to view the problem in an unbiased and objective manner without getting fixated on a particular solution or a problem area. It attempts to view the conflict holistically and tries to lay threadbare the embedded structural units in the system by decomposing it into its lowest entity. The objectivity that would (in all likelihood) emerge from such an exercise may provide plausible steps to architect a resolution system design template or at least strengthen the intuitive logic of the negotiators and mediators as they grapple with the specter of a territorial dispute. In taking this view on the issue, it is indeed quite well understood that architecture of systems that are laced with social and political processes is tedious as they are highly complex and non-linear in their response. The complexity stems from the deep crosscoupling between the social, political and economic processes and the non- linearity arises out of the fact that each input in a particular realm does not necessarily elicit a proportional response. There are strong causal feedback loops that make the system response counter-intuitive too. It is beyond doubt, a sizeable challenge for a resolution system architect to pick up the gauntlet and create a simple yet creative architecture that would form the vertebral column for the design of a robust resolution system. To be able to do so one needs to clearly understand the rudiments of Systems Architecture and International Relations so as to weave a concept together.

This thesis presents the development and validation of a novel interface modelling methodology integrated with a system architectural analysis framework that emphasises the need to manage the integrity of deriving and allocating requirements across multiple levels of abstraction in a structured manner. The state of the art review in this research shows that there is no shared or complete interface definition model that could integrate diverse interaction viewpoints for defining system requirements with complete information. Furthermore, while existing system modelling approaches define system architecture with functions and their allocation to subsystems to meet system requirements, they do not robustly address the importance of considering well-defined interfaces in an integrated manner at each level of systems hierarchy. This results in decomposition and integration issues across the multiple levels of systems hierarchy. Therefore, this thesis develops and validates following: -Interface Analysis Template as a systematic tool that integrates diverse interaction viewpoints for modelling system interfaces with intensive information for deriving requirements. -Coupling Matrix as an architecture analysis framework that not only allocates functions to subsystems to meet requirements but also promotes consistent consideration of well-defined interfaces at each level of design hierarchy. Insights from the validation of developed approach with engineering case studies within an automotive OEM are discussed, reflecting on the effectiveness, efficiency and usability of the methods.

System-Images capture the movements, behaviors, events and running commands of the city at any given moment; they are key software architectures to understand how machines and smart objects see and record today. Computers aren't the only ones communicating and backing up programs and operating systems to a hard disk or cloud. In today's cities, the objects that we would least suspect--parking meters, traffic lights, navigation systems, mobile phones, airplanes, alarm clocks, wireless routers, name tags, doors, virtual private networks (VPNs), steering wheels, game consoles, and even groceries-- take images of us, using hardware and software like sensors and behavioral algorithms, with human characteristics programmed into them. Whether the information logged is visual is beside the point; vital information in the form of visual cues, numbers, audio signals, colors, interaction time, computational identity and location are enough to coordinate an imprint of user and societal behavior. If collated, what kinds of narratives, philosophies and aesthetics would this data generate? System-Images provokes questions and fictions about our new spatial configuration and the nascent language it has birthed, hastened by technologies which do can everything that we can...and more.

The design of a modular, flexible and extensible distributed CAN-based battery management system is examined in this thesis. The advent of next generation networks has placed an increasing demand for greater reliability from telecommunication power systems. A crucial component of the power system is the standby battery network. Battery networks are typically monitored by battery management systems. Existing management systems are more concerned with process level control methodology rather than system level organisation of the network architecture. Moreover, most existing systems are based on proprietary communication protocols. The proposed management solution addresses these local area network limitations, as well as the distribution of intelligence at the process level, integration between the local and wide area networks and transparency between the process and user levels. The local network organisation is based on generic network nodes which perform management, monitoring and control activities through specialised hardware interfaces. Remote connectivity to the local network is facilitated through applet-servlet communication over the Internet. A modular design has been applied to the implementation of the node software to allow easy expandability of node functionality. The local battery network has been naturally and logically partitioned and a distributed data organisation has been adopted to facilitate transparency of data transfer from the process-level to the user-level via a well-defined communication channel. The system design is based on isolated concurrent processes that ensure system stability and successfully integrate the local control network with the wide network. A messaging system for the local CAN network has been formulated based on transmission of command, data and status messages related to battery management functionality. Performance analysis of the local network and the node organisation has shown the substantial capacity of the proposed system for handling the battery management application. The designed battery network simulation model allows the performance evaluation of various battery application scenarios. The simulation model focuses on the generic components within the management system and encapsulates the primary features of the network organisation. The Extend simulation package has been used in the design of the model. The key criteria of the simulation model organisation and model block design are well defined. Limitations of the simulation package have also been identified.

Fossil fuels are, by their very nature, finite resources. There are, however, numerous renewable energy sources that should be taken advantage of. One of the most abundant is also the most difficult to produce on Earthsolar energy. This thesis explores the feasibility of a space-based solar power satellite. The thesis focuses specifically on the satellite design as opposed to the end-to-end design to include the ground segment. It explores the potential orbits for such a satellite to operate from and ultimately concludes that a geostationary orbit is the only logical location for an operational orbit. This thesis also focuses on two segments of the spacecraft the solar array and the power transmission payload. The solar array area was calculated using the current best theoretical solar cells and assumed a 1 GW transmission power. Finally, this thesis explored which transmission payload to recommend for an operational system, concluding that a laser system is the most efficient use of space and weight. The final portion of this thesis was to examine the business case. Based on the design in this thesis, space-based solar power cannot compete with fossil fuels and likely will not for the foreseeable future.

This thesis lays the necessary groundwork for measuring the complexity of systems architecture models. We propose a set of complexity measures, which are usable with models defined using the Object-Process Model (OPM). In order to do this, we introduce a new concept of interface complexity multiplier for compensating the hidden information at interfaces. We also define a set of complexity metrics for system architecture models. We also develop models for three different systems for mobile entertainment. The purpose of these models is to show how OPM is suitable for modeling such systems and also to provide some comparative material for complexity measurements. We use the new metrics to determine the complexity of the models of mobile entertainment systems. The thesis also contains a rigorous definition of complexity and a survey of existing complexity measurement methods.

The root system is the plant’s principal organ for water and mineral nutrient supply. Root growth follows an endogenous, developmental programme. Yet, this programme can be modulated by external cues which makes root system architecture (RSA), the spatial configuration of all root parts, a highly plastic trait. Presence or absence of nutrients such as nitrate (N), phosphate (P), potassium (K) and sulphate (S) serve as environmental signals to which a plant responds with targeted proliferation or restriction of main or lateral root growth. In turn, RSA serves as a quantitative reporter system of nutrient starvation responses and can therefore be used to study nutrient sensing and signalling mechanisms. In this study, I have analysed root architectural responses of various Arabidopsis thaliana genotypes (wildtype, mutants and natural accessions) to single and multiple nutrient deficiency treatments. A comprehensive analysis of combinatorial N, P, K an S supply allowed me to dissect the effect of individual nutrients on individual root parameters. It also highlighted the existence of interactive effects arising from simultaneous environmental stimuli. Quantification of appropriate RSA parameters allowed for targeted testing of known regulatory genes in specific nutritional settings. This revealed, for example, a novel role for CIPK23, AKT1 and NRT1.1 in integrating K and N effects on higher order lateral root branching and main root angle. A significant contribution to phenotypic variation also arose from P*K interactions. I could show that the iron (Fe) concentration in the external medium is an important driving force of RSA responses to low-P and low-K. In fact, P and K deprivation caused Fe accumulation in distinct parts of the root system, as demonstrated by Fe staining and synchrotron X-Ray fluorescence. Again, selected K, P and Fe transport and signalling mutants were tested for aberrant low-K and/or low-P phenotypes. Most notably, the two paralogous ER-localised multicopper oxidases LPR1 and LPR2 emerged as important signalling components of P and K deprivation, potentially integrating Fe homeostasis with meristematic activity under these conditions. In addition to the targeted characterisation of specific genotype-environment interactions, I investigated novel RSA responses to low-K via a non-targeted approach based on natural variation. A morphological gradient spanned the entire genotype set, linking two extreme strategies of low-K responses. Strategy I accessions responded to low-K with a moderate reduction of main root growth but a severe restriction of lateral root elongation. In contrast, strategy II genotypes ceded main root growth in favour of lateral root proliferation. The genetic basis of these low-K responses was then subsequently mapped onto the A. thaliana genome via quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis using recombinant inbred lines derived from parental accessions that either adopt strategy I (Col-0) or II (Ct-1). In sum, this study addresses the question how plants incorporate environmental signals to modulate developmental programmes that underly RSA formation. I present evidence for novel phenotypic responses to nutrient deprivation and for novel genetic regulators involved in nutrient signalling and crosstalk.

Reliability and redundancy of safety-critical network systems is a paramount issue in system engineering. Be it in evaluating existing network systems or solving optimization problems for designing network systems, it is important to consider reliability and redundancy. This dissertation is in collaboration with AIRBUS Group, France, and they are very interest in the optimal design of safety-critical aircraft architecture systems which have to consider reliability and redundancy. To address the problem of optimally designing such systems, we chose to focus on one specific aircraft architecture system the door management system. It checks if all doors are properly closed and the cabin has the correct pressure. It is a safety-critical system since it is part of the pressurization system of an aircraft. To optimally design the DMS while considering reliability, a suitable reliability evaluation algorithm is necessary. In this dissertation, we begin by proposing a suitable reliability evaluation algorithm for a type of non series-parallel network system which includes the DMS and which can be used in an optimization model. The reliability evaluation algorithm is based on a simplification of the probability principle of inclusion-exclusion formula for intersections of unions. The simplification exploits the presence of many repeated events and has many fewer terms, which significantly reduces the number of operations needed. We compare its computational efficiency against the sum of disjoint products method KDH88 for a simple artificial example and for the DMS. Afterwards, we introduce the first MILP model for the DMS with k-redundancy. As the model is too difficult to be solved efficiently by standard MILP solvers, we discuss the issues of solving the model with general solving methods such as branch-and-bound and branch-and-price. We introduce specialized branching rules and new heuristics to solve the DMS problem with k-redundancy more efficiently and show results of computational tests which compare the specialized solving algorithms with general solving algorithms for example instances of the DMS problem. Lastly, we discuss the problems of considering reliability in MI(N)LP models for the DMS and how the new reliability evaluation algorithm can be used. In this discussion, we give different MI(N)LP models for the DMS problem with redundancy and reliability. Moreover, we propose a new heuristic for the DMS problem with redundancy and reliability. It is based on branch-and-bound, the Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition and on the new reliability evaluation algorithm. We show results of computational tests of the new heuristic for example instances of the DMS problem and discuss its validity.

Glass facades building, especially offices, always need shading devices to guarantee occupant's well-being and comfort. However, shading devices are often composed of shutters or fabric tents which creates dark interiors and do not allow access to view out. Moreover, they ruin the aesthetical appearance of glass facades. The study aims to research and propose an alternative shading system for glass facades building which can prevent from glare in the interior spaces as well as respecting the continuity of a glass facade from an exterior point of view. Research upon materials that can be integrated into glass has been carried and Ceramic ink digital printing has been found as the right technique to ensure both a functional and aesthetical value. The material today has been used mainly for decorative functions. The patterns and the colors of the shading device proposed with ceramic and digital ink printing have been tested in Deloitte Building in Copenhagen with both 3D digital models and an online survey investigating comfort preferences.

The prevalence of the Internet, client/server applications, Java, e-commerce, and electronic communications offers tremendous opportunities for business, education and communication, while simultaneously presenting big challenges to network security. In general, the web was designed with little concern for security. Thus, the issue of security is important in the design of network-based applications. The software architecture proposed in this thesis allows for the secure and efficient running of a team-based decision support system, specifically TEAMDEC. Based on the system's requirements and architecture, three types of possible attacks to the system are identified and a security solution is proposed that allows for user authentication, secure communication, and script access control. The implementation of these features will reduce security risk and allow effective use of the valuable system information data.

System architecture is driven by numerous upstream influences. Regulations, market forces, cultural biases, and a variety of other influences can significantly affect whether architecture is successful or not. To be successful the architect must include upstream influences in the design. Few if any architectural methods are available to systematically account for upstream influences. A new method, Evaluation by a Single Metric (ESM), is presented. It is based on fundamental design principles. It enhances the system architectural process by organizing upstream influences that drive architecture. The ESM method is concept independent and used before concept focused system architectural methods. Specifically, system boundaries, salient upstream elements. and functional connections thereof are systematically determined. The ESM process provides a concept neutral framework used to evaluate candidate architectural concepts. The ESM method is very general. It can be used for the design of nearly any kind of system or process. The thesis makes extensive use of a diverse set of examples which highlight ESM advantages and flexibility.

This thesis aims to develop a new innovative architecture for monitoring and SCADA systems able to centralize data and support data analytics for ideally every kind of productions. The core of the innovation is the definition and management inside the platform of a JSON configuration which describe the machine or the plant to be monitored. The state of the art gives a complete landscape about how technologies have evolved since the born of web and which of them have been applied in distributed system such as web monitoring systems. One of the most important topics here are the communication protocols, new generation of high performance databases and the purpose of machine learning algorithms in order to improve maintenance activities and support decision making process. Then the architecture of the system has been presented paying attention on the concept of reconfigurability and customization of the platform. This is done by configuring the machines by means a JSON descriptor that indicates which data collect in the system. An appendix explains in deep how the JSON configuration works and which parameters the user can manipulate in order to increase the precision and the performance of the system. Systems like the one proposed can be used in vary different ways and the thesis wants to analyze some of them and proposing solutions describing real case studies. These case studies regard quality check on the production line (online or offline), data collection for production scheduling and whole monitoring systems for textile application.

Software-based system architecture has been recognized as a foundation laying out the underpinnings that are critically important for successful engineering of large-scale complex systems. In recent years, architecting has played a more crucial role in engineering network-centric system of systems. The software paradigm has been shifting from treating software as a product (SaaP) to treating software as a service (SaaS). SaaS is also referred to as the Cloud Computing, where the term "cloud" is used as a metaphor for "network". As the complexity of the architecture of network-centric software-based system of systems has increased, the description of such architecture has posed significant technical challenges. The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has developed the DoD Architecture Framework [DoDAF 2009a, DoDAF 2009b] for describing system architectures. IEEE proposes a Recommended Practice for Architectural Description of Software-Intensive Systems [IEEE 2000]. SEI provides high-level guidelines for Documenting Software Architectures [Clements et al 2003]. However, all of the diagrams proposed by DoD, IEEE, and SEI are two-dimensional static graphical and textual representations that do not reveal the dynamic characteristics of a system architecture. This thesis presents a conceptual framework (CF) for specifying the architecture of a network-centric software-based system of systems. The developed CF provides the beginning part of a larger research effort. The main goal of the overall research is to employ the automation-based software paradigm and to automatically generate a visual simulation model of a system architecture, with which experiments can be conducted to assess the dynamic characteristics of that architecture. The CF, developed in the research described herein, enables the automatic generation of a visual simulation model representing a system architecture. The proposed CF is evaluated in half a dozen case studies to demonstrate that it provides the necessary elements for automatic generation of a simulation model as the description of a complex system of systems architecture.

Flexibility analysis using the Real Options framework is typically utilized on high-level architectural decisions. Using Real Options, a company may develop strategies to mitigate downside risk for future uncertainties while developing upside opportunities. The MIT-Ford Alliance has extended the techniques of flexibility analysis beyond high-level architecture to core product design decisions in future vehicle electrification. This thesis provides a methodology for a real-time support framework for developing novel engineering decisions. Risk is high in new product introduction. For hybrid and electric vehicles, market demand and technology forecasts have substantial uncertainty. The uncertainty is anticipated, as the high voltage battery pack hardware and control system architecture will experience multiple engineering development cycles in the next 20 years. Flexibility in product design could mitigate future risk due to uncertainty. By understanding the potential iteration of core technologies, the engineering team can provide flexibility in battery pack voltage monitoring, thermal control, and support software systems to meet future needs. The methodology used in this thesis has been applied in a Ford-MIT Alliance project. The Ford and MIT teams have valued key items within the core technology subsystems and have developed flexible strategies to allow Ford to capture upside potential while protecting against downside risk, with little-to-no extra cost at this early stage of development. A novel voltage monitoring technique and a unique flexible thermal control strategy have been identified and are under consideration by Ford. The flexibility methodology provided motivation and support for unique decisions made during product design by the Ford team.

The ongoing environmental debate emphasizes the need for reducing CO2 emissions in order to counteract rapid climate change. The transportation industry is growing and is already today a signicant contributor to green house gas emissions. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can be utilized to create intelligent transportation systems which have proven to be able to reduce fuel consumption signicantly. The concept of vehicle platooning involves vehicles traveling in a longitudinal convoy with a short intermediate distance. By introducing ICT to a vehicle platoon the intermediate distance can be even shorter without compromising trac safety. The shorter distance also allows for reduced drag, thus reduced fuel consumption. A research group from KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Scania CV AB competed successfully with an autonomous platooning system in the Grand Cooperative Driving Challenge in 2011. In 2012 the cooperation continued and a new platooning system including lateral maneuvers, i.e. lane changing, was implemented. This master thesis presents the design and implementation of a new hardware and software architecture for the platooning system. For exibility and control prototyping issues a new real-time platform supporting the system was tested. The choice was to evaluate and test the xPC Target TM system developed by MathWorks. The xPC Target platform supports real-time code generation from Simulink Rand also provides an extensive I/O library needed for communication with external physical systems. In order to adapt to the xPC Target platform and lateral platooning scenarios a new system architectural framework was suggested. The architecture emphasized the need for separated components each with clearly delimited tasks. Another important requirement was to provide a system with a short learning curve for new master students that will work with the system in the future. A new system architecture approach was presented and implemented in two real-time computer systems. The rst computer executed a real-time software created in C++ which primarily handled wireless transmission. The second unit utilized a real-time software created in Simulink Rand executed on the xPC Target platform. Successful vehicle platooning experiments, including lateral maneuvers, were performed with the new system in November 2012.

e-Learning is becoming an influential role as an economic method and a flexible mode of study in the institutions of higher education today which has a presence in an increasing number of college and university courses. e-Learning as system of systems is a dynamic and scalable environment. Within this environment, e-learning is still searching for a permanent, comfortable and serviceable position that is to be controlled, managed, flexible, accessible and continually up-to-date with the wider university structure. As most academic and business institutions and training centres around the world have adopted the e-learning concept and technology in order to create, deliver and manage their learning materials through the web, it has become the focus of investigation. However, management, monitoring and collaboration between these institutions and centres are limited. Existing technologies such as grid, web services and agents are promising better results. In this research a new architecture has been developed and adopted to make the e-learning environment more dynamic and scalable by dividing it into regional data grids which are managed and monitored by agents. Multi-agent technology has been applied to integrate each regional data grid with others in order to produce an architecture which is more scalable, reliable, and efficient. The result we refer to as Regionally Distributed Architecture for Dynamic e-Learning Environment (RDADeLE). Our RDADeLE architecture is an agent-based grid environment which is composed of components such as learners, staff, nodes, regional grids, grid services and Learning Objects (LOs). These components are built and organised as a multi-agent system (MAS) using the Java Agent Development (JADE) platform. The main role of the agents in our architecture is to control and monitor grid components in order to build an adaptable, extensible, and flexible grid-based e-learning system. Two techniques have been developed and adopted in the architecture to build LOs' information and grid services. The first technique is the XML-based Registries Technique (XRT). In this technique LOs' information is built using XML registries to be discovered by the learners. The registries are written in Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI) format. The second technique is the Registered-based Services Technique (RST). In this technique the services are grid services which are built using agents. The services are registered with the Directory Facilitator (DF) of a JADE platform in order to be discovered by all other components. All components of the RDADeLE system, including grid service, are built as a multi-agent system (MAS). Each regional grid in the first technique has only its own registry, whereas in the second technique the grid services of all regional grids have to be registered with the DF. We have evaluated the RDADeLE system guided by both techniques by building a simulation of the prototype. The prototype has a main interface which consists of the name of the system (RDADeLE) and a specification table which includes Number of Regional Grids, Number of Nodes, Maximum Number of Learners connected to each node, and Number of Grid Services to be filled by the administrator of the RDADeLE system in order to create the prototype. Using the RST technique shows that the RDADeLE system can be built with more regional grids with less memory consumption. Moreover, using the RST technique shows that more grid services can be registered in the RDADeLE system with a lower average search time and the search performance is increased compared with the XRT technique. Finally, using one or both techniques, the XRT or the RST, in the prototype does not affect the reliability of the RDADeLE system.
