ABSTRACT Asthma is a common obstructive airway disease and the prevalence rate has increased in many countries, including Taiwan. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a 6-week swimming intervention for children with asthma on pulmonary function testing and the severity of asthma. Pulmonary function testing included: forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), percentage of FEV1/FVC(%) and peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR). Thirty children (20 male and 10 female) served as subjects in this study. Subjects were patients from the Chest Medicine Section at Ping-Tung Christian Hospital, Taiwan. The mean age was 9.9±1.6 years, the mean height 138.4±10.3 cm, and the mean body weight 38.5±12.3 kg. The subjects were paired and randomly assigned into the experimental or the control group, with 15 subjects in each group. Besides regular treatment for their asthma, the experimental group received a 6-week swimming training (3 sessions a week with 50 minutes per session). Results showed that there was a significant improvement in FEV1 and PEFR for the experimental group after the 6-week swimming intervention(p<.05). There was no significant improvement in FVC, FEV1 and PEFR in the control group. There were no differences between the experimental and control groups in the percentage of FEV1/FVC(%). The severity of the asthma was significantly reduced in the experimental group(p<.05). Conclusion: These data suggest that a swimming program can improve pulmonary function parameters and reduce the severity of the asthma attack for asthmatic children. Key words: swimming, asthma, children, pulmonary function testing

The Effect of Resistance Training on Propulsive Power of Front Crawl Swimming in Children June 1999 Student:Ping-Ping Chang Advisor:Shen-Yu Hsieh ABSTRACT The purposes of this study were to examine the effect of resistance training on propulsive power of arm stroke, leg kick, propulsive power percentage of arm stroke and leg kick, stroke rate, stroke length and performance in front crawl swimming. Subjects were 43 age-group swimmers. They were 11-12 yrs. old, train 5~6 times a week, 1.5~2 hours each time in water. They were tested before and after treatment training. Subjects were rank-ordered and balance-assigned into four groups: arm stroke, leg kick, whole stroke and control groups. Treatment training consisted of 6~10 repeats of 15sec all out tethered swimming, 3 days/wk, for 6 weeks. A two-way ANOVA and Pearson's product-moment correlation were used for data analysis. The results are: 1. The experimental groups (arm, leg and whole) significantly improved (p<.05) propulsive power of arm stroke, power percentage of arm stroke, stroke rate and performance time. 2. No significant differences were observed among the experimental groups using different parts of resistance training (p>.05). 3. The propulsive power of arm stroke, leg kick were correlated with front crawl performance time (r=-.39~-.62). Conclusions: After six weeks of tethered resistance training, no significant differences were observed among the different groups. It's probably because of insufficient training intensity, volume, and duration. It also may due to children's growth and development which blur the training effect. The propulsive power of arm stroke, leg kick and whole stroke swimming were correlated with front crawl swimming time. It confirms that propulsive power is one of the most important parameters that training is trying to develop.

Abstract This research was aimed to exploit the relationship between basic motor ability and swimming skill learning effects in primary school children. Subjects were 32 teenage male students at third grade in primary school who had no swimming experience. Thirteen basic motor abilities tests were examined before and after 4-weeks of teaching. Four technical tests, including kicking wall floating distance, leg kick speed, leg hand coordination, and front crawl comprehensive techniques were also carried out after 4-weeks of swimming learning for front crawl. Pearson product moment correlation was applied to examine the relationship between basic motor ability and swimming skill learning effects, and between total physical fitness score and effects of swimming skill learning. The significant level was set at α=.05. The results of this study were as following: (1) Significant correlations were found between front crawl leg kick speed and pre-test shuttle run, back strength, upper limb reaction speed and upper trunk lift ability ( r = 0.45, 0.42, -0.41, 0.41 respectively); (2) Significant correlations were revealed between total swimming skill scores and post-test vital capacity, shuttle run, back strength, upper trunk lift ability ( r =0.52, 0.39, 0.43, 0.61 respectively). This study concluded positive correlations between swimming skill learning effects and shuttle run, back strength, upper trunk lift performance of primary school children.

The purposes of the study were to investigate the effects of maximum speed with repetition training on anaerobic power and swimming performance in children swimmers. Eighteen children swimmers participated this study. The subjects were divided into short sprint high repetition (SSHR) group, long sprint low repetition (LSLR) group, and control (C) group according to their performance of 50-meter free-style swimming. All subjects sustained the training of basic swimming skill, SSHR and LSLR groups had additionally the maximum speed with repetition training for 15 meters with 10 repetitions and 25 meters with 6 repetitions, respectively. The training program proceed 3 times per week for 6 weeks. The anaerobic power of arms and legs, the performance of 50-meter free-style swimming, stroke rate, and stroke length of the subjects were measured before and after the experimental period. The paired t-test and independent one-way ANOVA were used to compare the variables within and between groups. The result showed that the peak, minimum, and average anaerobic power of arms and legs, and performance of swimming in SSHR and LSLR groups after the training were significantly higher(p<.05) than pre-test, and the fatigue indices of arms and legs were significantly lower(p<.05). There were no differences among three groups in all variables before training. Except the peak anaerobic power of legs, other variables in SSHR and LSLR groups were significantly higher than control group after training, but there were no differences between SSHR and LSLR groups. It is concluded that both of the two kinds of repetition training with maximum speed could effectively promoted the performance and anaerobic power of arms and legs in children swimmers.

The Effects of Swimming Training to Asthmatic Children in Physical Fitness, Pulmonary Function and Respiratory Inflammatory Mediators Abstract The present study aimed at exploring the effects of 8-week swimming training to indicative components of asthmatic children such as physical fitness, forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), eosinophil, immunoglobulin E (IgE), and eosinophil cationic protein (ECP). The experiment was intended for children (n=36) suffering from asthma stage 1 or stage 2, with age 8.84± 1.11 years, height 130.96 ± 9.31cm and weight 31.01 ± 9.37kg, who were divided into two 18-member groups, experimental group and control group, then allow children in former group to attend 8 week swimming training, while in contrast, those in control group neither to attend the training nor to engage in any exercises involving swimming. The subjects, the said asthmatic children, received physical fitness test, FEV1 test, and blood specimen analysis before and after receiving the swimming training and then all test data are subjected to 1-Way ANCOVA. The experiment results demonstrate the follows: 1. In Physical Fitness After having completed the 8-week swimming training, the asthmatic children demonstrate major difference (p<.05) in their Physical Fitness , excluding explosive strength. These reveal that an 8-week swimming training indeed enhances the BMI, flexibility, muscular endurance and cardio- respiratory endurance in the asthmatic children. 2. In Pulmonary Function and Respiratory Inflammatory Mediators After having completed the 8-week swimming training, the asthmatic children demonstrate significant difference only in FEV1, but not in the three blood biological values: eosinophil, IgE, and ECP. These indicate that an 8-week swimming training indeed improves largely the lung performance in the asthmatic children. Keywords: Swimming training, asthmatic children, Physical fitness, eosinophil, IgE,

The purpose of this study is to understand correlation among personality traits, leisure sports, swimming and the satisfaction of swimming learning patterns of elementary students in Xinzhuang. The research is based on the method of questionnaire survey. We perform a stratified sampling on the grade 4 to 6 students in three elementary schools and gather 251 valid samples. Basic statistics, including frequency distribution, descriptive statistics, multiple choice analysis, cluster analysis, the McNemar test, nonparametric statistical test, correspondence analysis and one-way RM-ANOVA, are performed in our study. The study shows (1) There are more than 90 percent students in the survey having leisure sport habits at which the proportion of male students is much higher than that of female in statistical sense. (2) From the study, we find there are three major reasons for students not engaging in leisure sports due to with no enough time, lazy going out of door and with no companion. (3) In the survey, there are nearly half students with leisure sports having swimming habit. Nearly 90 percent of that have participated in swimming training lecture at which most of them prefer freestyle. (4) Near one-fourth students participating in the swimming training lecture are with highly satisfaction, especially those ones following the curriculum teaching. (5) In addition, the proportion of satisfaction in the exchange of swimming skills under the learning situational structure, the order of management ability in the teacher’s professional facet and the cost of the course arrangement are lower. The improvement is worth noting.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to establish the instruction strategy of swimming lessons for the diplegia children with spastic type cerebral palsy, and to evaluate the effects of the swimming lessons on the joint angle for them. The subjects of the study were 15 diplegia children with spastic type cerebral palsy from the elementary schools in Tainan City. According to preferences, eight were assigned into one experimental group and seven were into control group. All subjects underwent one physical therapy per week while the experimental group also underwent three 60-minute swimming lessons per week for 20 weeks. Before and after the study, tested items included: shoulder joint (flexion, abduction, external rotation, internal rotation), elbow joint (flexion, pronation, supination), wrist joint (flexion, extension), hip joint (flexion, abduction, external rotation, internal rotation), knee joint (flexion), and ankle joint (dorsiflexion, plantar flexion). The results were analyzed and listed as follows: 1. Before study, all subjects didn’t show significantly difference on angle joint measurements (P> .05). 2. Experimental group showed significant improvement on right shoulder internal rotation, left shoulder joint flexion, right left elbow joint supination, right wrist joint extension, left hip joint internal rotation, right left hip external rotation, and right left hip joint flexion. 3. Control group showed significant improvement on the tests of right left hip joint flexion and left elbow joint flexion. 4. Experimental group showed significant improvement in their swimming evaluations. Two were able to swim 25 m using breaststroke in coordination with freestyle leg kick and 25 m using backstroke with arm and leg coordination. Another two were able to swim independently with dog paddle for 10 m. This study showed that diplegia children with spastic type cerebral palsy not only could undergo aquatic therapy, they could also participate in normal swimming lessons and activities, provided that the instruction strategy of swimming teaching was modified to suit the needs of these children. After taking the swimming lessons, they showed significant improvement on movements of extremities. These improvements have positive effects on the subjects’ sitting, standing and walking postures.

This Internship Report falls within the scope of obtaining the Master's Degree in Sports Training for Children and Young people taught at the Faculty of Sports Sciences and Physical Education of Coimbra. The stage was hosted by the Nautical Club of Miranda do Corvo, which has about 300 students of all ages in the teaching field, and is currently one of the largest trainers of athletes in the county. The training period lasted approximately 9 months and was limited to giving swimming lessons to swimming schools, namely the Aquatic Adaptation (AMA) level, which includes Level A0 (AMA) and Level A1 ( Alternate Learning), that is, at the A0 level the objective was to try to understand if the objectives in each domain were being overcome, in order to determine which (s) were the most difficult domains and, at level A1, the The objective was to determine whether or not the students already performed the alternating techniques according to how they should be done. The sample that was part of this report were 12 children aged between 3 and 10 years, 6 of whom were of level A0 and 6 of level A1.A characterization of the sample was performed in technical and psychological terms, in maturational terms and in anthropometric terms, and these were evaluated in the same place, on the same day, under the same conditions and with the same protocol. And, since the level of the students still did not allow the application of test batteries related to swimming, observation sheets were applied to evaluate the level in which they were.To conclude, most of the students were able to reach the objectives outlined to the level where they were inserted, and those who achieved these goals passed level at the end of the season. Those who did not succeed remained at the same level.

Purpose: To investigate the effect of different load swimming training on children’s performance (25m and 100m free style), growth hormone (GH), thyroid hormone (T3,T4) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) concentration. Methods: There were 35 male swimming team members (at least trained one year) and 15 general students (hadn’t received any training), ages from 10 to 13 years old, were recruited as the subjects of this study. The average high and weight of training boys and general boys were 143.2 +- 12.6cm and 37.2+-10.8kg, and142.1+-10.2 cm and 34.45+-7.98kg, respectively. The training load was 5 days per week, 1.5 hours each day for training team members and 3 days per week, one hour each session for general boys and lasted for 12 weeks. The blood samples were taken before training, after 4 weeks of training and after 12 weeks of training at 8 am after 8 hours fasting for GH, TSH, T3 and T4 analysis. The collected data were analyzed with 2-way ANOVA. Results: 1, The GH concentrations of trained members were significantly higher (p<.05) than that of general boys from pre test to post test. However, there were no significant differences of T3, T4, and TSH between two groups at different tests. 2, The T3 after 4 weeks and after 12 weeks of training of both groups were significantly higher than that of pre test. The TSH after 4 weeks of training was significantly higher than pre test and then dropped significantly (P<.05). The T4 was not different among different testing periods. 3, the 25m and 100m performances were improved significantly after 4 weeks of training, and the performances of 12 weeks of training were better than that of 4 weeks of training. Conclusions: The prolonged swimming training will increase children GH level may benefit the muscular and bone growth. The training programs 3 days per week for general children and 5 days per week for team members will improve their swimming performance.
