<p>This paper considers the fast changing developments and changes in relation to sustainable development law with its three pillars, and the needs of international development. The focus of the analysis is on the connection between international economic, international social and international environmental law which constitute sustainable development law at their intersection point, and will show how they can be the paths to sustainable peace. As sustainable development law is emerging as international concern, the qualitative approach of this paper will show its pillars separately and their connection under different conditions. This paper also demonstrates that this approach is gaining ground in the literature, and it contends that it is a more appropriate way of addressing the problems of economic, social and environmental. In support of this argument, the paper looks initially how sustainable development law fits to be the path to sustainable peace within the contemporary world which is full of economic, social and environmental conflicts. Secondly, it provides a theoretical framework how sustainable development law with its pillars can lead the world to sustainable peace. Thirdly, the three pillars, (-international economic law, international social law and international environmental law-), will be elaborated in relation to their intersection and sustainable development law.</p>

This doctoral thesis theorises on how business organisations have reacted to the legal principle of Sustainable Development. The proposition is that Sustainable Development is an event-driven principle of becoming where the present depends both on the organisation’s environment and its internal operations. The starting point of the research is the observing of decisions made in relation to Sustainable Development covering a period of around ten years. This is based on four distinctions resulting in a structural, processual, motivational and functional understanding of the organisations in question. The theoretical framework is based on Niklas Luhmann’s theory of social systems, emphasising his theory of organisations, contributing new knowledge on how organisations react to their environment, the consequence of a-centricity, poly-contexturality and the un- steerability of society. Firstly, the thesis demonstrates that, for the companies involved, Sustainable Development has resulted in a better use of resources, both natural and human and consequently capital. Secondly, the result cannot be attributed only to internal industry decisions but significantly also to the direct or indirect involvement of NGOs and other irritants. Thirdly, Sustainable Development can be highly attributed to law but when the environment of law is not satisfied, rules of behaviour outside the legal framework are created by organisations such as NGOs. The research shows that Sustainable Development is not a recipe for success in itself but, without it, long-term profit is not possible. There is a structural coupling between NGOs, businesses and legislators and this can be seen in the way they communicate with each other. It is clear that although relevant, law is not the only mechanism and, in some cases, not even the best. Rather than forcing businesses into a specific legal framework the best available solution, consistent with theory and application, is for business organisations to reduce difference between themselves and their environment through self-steering when it comes to Sustainable Development and to increase difference when it comes to organisational differentiation.

Impacts of the Olympic Games on the biosphere and on the communities that host them are significant. Increasing size, scope and costs, rising security concerns, cultural and environmental impacts are some of the key issues facing host cities and those cities bidding or considering bidding for the Olympic Games. One of the ideals of the Olympic Charter is to place sport at the service of the harmonious development of mankind and the three pillars of the Olympic movement are sport, culture and environment. This paper examines the IOC’s options for sustainability in its primary question: In what way could the International Olympic Committee (IOC) contribute to a global movement towards socio-ecological sustainability? The hypothesis that the IOC is an agent for social/cultural and environmental change is explored. The paper uses a principled definition of success for socio-ecological sustainability and presents a vision of a sustainable IOC and Olympic Movement within a sustainable society. From that vision specific IOC strategies along with past, present and short-term future actions are analysed to determine the obstacles and deficiencies in moving the IOC toward complying with scientifically relevant principles for socio-ecological sustainability. Systems thinking is used to identify obstacles and opportunities within the Olympic Movement. These obstacles and opportunities to strategically move the IOC toward sustainability are identified, analysed and discussed. The paper concludes with examples of possible actions the IOC could take to strategically move towards sustainability.

The environmental impact of human behaviour on the design, construction and operation of buildings is often overlooked, frequently resulting in sub optimal performance over the lifecycle of the building (credibility gap and value-action gap). An over-reliance on technological and market solutions (false positivity) throughout the design, construction and operation of sustainable buildings means changing user behaviour is not currently envisaged by all but the most sustainability-minded built environment professionals. This study aims to develop an understanding of the dynamic and complex systems by which responsible environmental, social and economic action (sustainable behaviour) emerges from the relationship between people and the built environment. The primary research question asks to what extent sustainable buildings encourage sustainable behaviour, with broader research objectives covering the need for sustainable buildings and their social, environmental and economic benefits; a clear definition of sustainable behaviour and sustainable buildings; identifying opportunities for behavioural change from current best practice and how behavioural change theory can be applied to the built environment to encourage and optimise sustainable behaviour. Literature review reveals existing theory and practice in the fields of sustainability, architecture, behavioural psychology and pedagogy applied generally to the design, construction and operation of sustainable buildings. Five exemplar sustainable buildings with pedagogical functions are also investigated. The primary empirical research methodology uses grounded theory, ethnography and phenomenology through interview and survey data analysis, highlighting common best practices and innovative approaches, as well as revealing barriers to achieving sustainable built environments that encourage sustainable behaviour. The research reveals that there are numerous opportunities for behavioural interventions at critical stages throughout the lifecycle of buildings where ‘value-action’ gaps between our intentions to be more sustainable and our often sub-optimal actions or behaviours are identified. Strategies includes education, information provision, training, experiential learning, feedback, participation and regulation. The research contributes original knowledge by relating the way building mechanisms for change can be understood through the lens of behavioural psychology and the synthesis of the three disciplines of sustainability, architecture and pedagogy.

The task of converting the rhetoric of sustainable development to real action and change is one that poses significant challenges for local and central government agencies. The complexity of this task is compounded by the increasing acceptance that the impediments to advancing the sustainable development agenda are largely institutional. This thesis argues that, unless explicit consideration is given to understanding institutional change for sustainable development and the ways in which it can be enabled, little progress is likely to be made. This thesis sets out to examine the contribution of building institutional capacity in enabling institutional change for sustainable development. In doing so it starts by developing conceptual frameworks for both institutional capacity and institutional change. The institutional capacity framework illustrates the integrated nature of capacity building for progressing sustainable development, and the conceptual framework of institutional change is designed to help agencies understand the complexity and holistic nature of institutional change. These conceptual frameworks were developed initially from an analysis of empirical material relating to the institutional issues associated with advancing sustainable development and were informed by the theoretical perspectives provided by new institutionalism and capacity building. Further refinement of the conceptual frameworks was possible by using a case study of a multi-agency public sector sustainable development initiative in the Auckland region of New Zealand. Analysis of interviews revealed that the building of institutional capacity is enmeshed with institutional change for sustainable development. The failure to understand the ii integrated and holistic nature of capacity building has an impact on the success of multi-agency public sector initiatives seeking to change current policy and practice. From the case study and further analysis of the empirical and theoretical literature it was possible to develop a set of institutional design principles that incorporate the conceptual frameworks and seek to make them applicable for the design of multiagency initiatives. These institutional design principles were tested and refined through further interviews with case study participants, resulting in the development of a process for designing and implementing multi-agency public sector sustainable development initiatives. The design process embeds the conceptual frameworks for institutional capacity and institutional change, and demonstrates that the task of progressing sustainable development is a process of change and can be enabled by a focus on applying the institutional design principles developed through this research. It is critical, first, that design of new initiatives takes account of the existing institutional landscape and identifies the necessary shifts in each dimension of institutions to ensure institutional change, makes as much use of existing structures as possible, is clear on the purpose of the initiative, specifies the extent of coordination sought between agencies and identifies specific mechanisms to steer integration. The second key component of institutional design is the identification of the institutional capacities required to support the institutional change sought from the initiative, their development during the course of an initiative, and the incorporation of evaluation and reflection as a key element of the process of implementation. iii The findings of this research contribute to our understanding of the capacities required to facilitate institutional change and the elements of institutional design that can shape efforts by the public sector to advance sustainable development.

Microfinance offers one way to combat poverty by providing access to credit and financial services to low-income borrowers. We argue that the interconnectedness of the socioeconomic and ecological system as well as the reliance on ecosystem services make it important to provide microcredit from a full sustainability perspective. We used the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development, a scientific based systematic and strategic approach, to create a principle-based model of a microfinance institution operating in a socioeconomic and ecologically sustainable manner. This model was then compared with the circumstances in which these institutions currently operate. We then explored how taking a full sustainability perspective could meet current challenges and maximise opportunities. After a prioritisation process, we made recommendations on how these organisations could strategically move towards sustainability.

Remotely Sustainable focuses on a specific line of work that could be called 'remote Indigenous architecture'. I define this as architecture for Aboriginal clients who are the traditional owners of their homelands, where these projects are built. This context is critical because the issues I discuss may be relevant to other Indigenous communities in Australia. However, the customs, culture, bureaucracy and conditions mean I must caution anyone in applying any of these ideas to another community without deep consideration of and good consultation with that community. The context also extends to the broader framework of federal and state governance. As architects and citizens it seems there is little we can do to impact on these systems, but if the government and agencies do not make appropriate decisions, there is little chance of improving the outcomes for Aboriginal people. Working in this field as an architect is extremely hard. There are almost insurmountable problems that arise from ineffective government agencies, difficulties in communicating with clients, extreme distances to travel, physical discomfort to be endured and very little in the way of fees to perform these tasks. The difficulties begin at the consultancy stage and continue throughout the project until occupation by the clients. There is great difficulty in ensuring that the builders and tradespeople do their jobs properly and ensuring they return to sites to fix defective work is problematic. The budgets allocated to Indigenous housing projects are often well below that required to produce buildings that satisfy the clients' needs and expectations. Finally, there is little appreciation of the work that architects do in these communities, possibly because in some cases architects do their job badly. This Master of Architecture Project uses case study buildings by iredale pedersen hook architects to reveal some of the difficulties faced when delivering these projects, in order to encourage the development of better solutions in the future.

This thesis focuses on eGovernance – the use of ICT as a means to improve public sector practice. Previous research has shown that there is a lack of long-term discussion on the purposes and directions of eGovernance development, often outlining it as unequivocally positive, while missing to consider the complexities and conflicts involved in this process. In order to understand the complexities of eGovernance a future-oriented perspective is needed. In other words a perspective that not only focuses on using ICT to be responsive to present needs but also making it possible to discuss which goals public sector ICT initiatives should strive for and how these correspond to goals and means in the public sector as a whole. In order to do this I employ a sustainability perspective. The aim of this thesis is to understand how eGovernance can be sustainable in such a complex organizational environment. This is approached in four papers; based on two case studies, situated in the public sector of Sweden, and a structured literature review of the use of the sustainability concept in eGovernance research. The findings of this thesis include a framework of sustainable eGovernance, including an outline of the different dimensions of sustainability: social, economic, environmental and technical. These dimensions are seen as carriers of different values and goals which are in a process of continuous dialogue and conflict. Cutting across these four dimensions are two themes: decision making and information infrastructure, which make up the backbone of how ICT can be used in order to improve public practice. The theoretical lens of sustainability widens our understanding and helps in the questioning of motivations, directions and implications of eGovernance initiatives. This thesis thus contributes with a theoretically and empirically founded framework, which is suitable as a foundation for sustainable eGovernance development and further research into that area.

Tese de Doutoramento em Design, com a especialização em Design apresentada na Faculdade de Arquitetura da Universidade de Lisboa para obtenção do grau de Doutora.<br>Apesar de mais de metade de um século de avanços na área do Desenvolvimento Sustentável, o Homem procura não apenas um equilíbrio socioeconómico e ambiental, mas também reintroduz novas visões globais com vista a promover o conceito de Flourishing. Deste modo, surge um novo paradigma do design que, per se, deveria promover resultados além da mera sustentabilidade ou habilidade para sobreviver. O Design de Interiores como uma disciplina multifacetada, com pesquisas emergentes promove a associação da importância subjetiva de bem-estar, com vista a atingir objetivos globais sustentáveis, desafiando a criação de habitats humanos a que correspondem novas percepções de bem-estar. O objetivo deste estudo foi explorar e entender melhor as características do paradigma emergente de qualidade de design de interiores e a sua relação com as variáveis Homem-Ambiente e Sustentabilidade aplicado às hostels em Lisboa, o que possibilitou desenvolver um modelo de avaliação deste sistema e finalmente explorar como estas relações estão associadas. A primeira fase consistiu sobretudo na exploração qualitativa destas características e a identificação de metodologias existentes que avaliam estes conceitos, deste modo foi realizada a recolha de dados e revisão de literatura, bem como a observação indireta através da análise de dados disponíveis sobre hostels de Lisboa. Os resultados desta fase foram utilizados numa segunda fase de pesquisa, com vista a construir um modelo conceptual desse sistema, identificando e explorando as principais características positivas de design de interiores que influenciam a relação Homem-Ambiente e construindo instrumentos de avaliação. Na terceira fase de investigação estes instrumentos de avaliação permitiram validar o modelo conceptual e observar se/como estas características relacionam a qualidade do design interior à qualidade do ambiente interior percepcionado, bem-estar experienciado, comportamentos pró-ambientais nas hostels de Lisboa e sustentabilidade subsequente destas entidades. Os resultados contribuem para o design de interiores e para o desenvolvimento de metodologias de avaliação da sustentabilidade, inserido no paradigma exposto, bem como para a indústria do turismo através de uma melhor compreensão da relação entre a qualidade ambiental interna percebida e o vínculo emocional com a hostel e a avaliação do alojamento.<br>ABSTRACT: Despite more than half of century advances in sustainable development, the World not only still strives for economical, social, and environmental system balance but calls for reinventing existing worldviews in order to promote flourishing. Thus arising the paradigm in design, hence it, per se, should be attempting outcomes beyond mere sustainability or ability to survive. Interior Design as a multifaceted discipline with emerging research issues encourages embracing the importance of subjective well-being to reach the overall sustainable well-being goals, thus challenged for creating human habitats that corresponds new perceptions of well-being.
The intent of this study was to explore and better understand the characteristics of emerging paradigm of interior design quality, and its relationship to people-environment variables, and sustainability in hostels, which would allow building a model of evaluation this system, and finally explore how these relationships are related in hostels of Lisbon.
The first phase, was mostly qualitative exploration of these characteristics and existing methodologies that evaluate these concepts, we did it by collecting data through literature review, and indirect observation through content analysis of available data on hostels of Lisbon. Findings from this phase were used in second research phase to construct conceptual model of this system identifying and exploring the main positive interior design characteristics that influence people-environment relationship, and build instruments of evaluation
In third research phase these instruments were used to validate conceptual model through observation and content analysis if/how these characteristics relate interior design quality to perceived indoor environment quality, experienced well-being, pro-environmental behaviours at Lisbon hostels and sub sequential sustainability of these entities. The findings contribute to interior design and sustainability evaluation methodologies within declared paradigm, and to tourism industry through better understanding of relationship between perceived indoor environmental quality and guest emotional bond with hostel and follow-up evaluation of establishment.<br>N/A

In a highly globalised world where all production and consumption activities are internationally intertwined and the environmental consequences of those actions are hard to identify, rethinking the role of work in our societies according to sustainability principles is a complex but highly necessary task. Salaried work has become one of the crucial indicators to analyse any country in the world. By looking at the proportion of the population that is employed, the working conditions they have, and how productive they are when performing their tasks, it is possible to produce an image of a country's society to assist in the understanding of the levels of well-being of its citizens. Work and labour markets not only largely structure the way the economy and society function, they also heavily influence an individual's life satisfaction and happiness; virtually the entire life of a person is designed around their work. Given the relevance work has at all levels, diving into the concept of sustainable work is a crucial project due to the urgency of environmental matters. The biggest role humanity faces is how to transform our societies so that they are sustainable from a social, ecological and economic perspective. For the sustainable society vision, work would need to be drastically altered in order to adapt it to the multi-dimensional sustainability requirements. This research aims to contribute to this enterprise by identifying the conditions that define the sustainability of work and then present an overview of seven European countries from this perspective. The present document introduces our conceptualisation of work and explains its main components. These are designed around the idea of the sustainable society and are composed of individuals' needs, equity and planetary boundaries. L’analisi presente nell’elaborato parte dalla pubblicazione di un articolo avvenuta a Giugno 2016 sul sito del Fondo Monetario Internazionale, in cui viene sostenuta la tesi per cui le politiche messe in atto dallo stesso e dalla Banca Mondiale, dagli anni ottanta fino ad oggi, non siano più sostenibili a lungo termine. L’articolo si sofferma particolarmente sulle politiche di austerità, privatizzazione e libertà di circolazione di capitali, che si inseriscono nel raggio delle cosiddette politiche “neoliberiste”, sottolineandone gli effetti negativi sulla società odierna in materia di iniqua distribuzione della ricchezza e di rischio di sempre più frequenti crisi economiche, da cui ne deriva la consapevolezza di un sistema diventato insostenibile a livello mondiale. L’elaborato si focalizza principalmente sul tema dell’insostenibilità delle politiche neoliberiste e per dimostrarne l’effettiva veridicità si concentra nella prima parte sulla spiegazione di ciò che si intende per “neoliberismo”, descrivendone il percorso di sviluppo storico e culturale per poi analizzare nel dettaglio ciò che è contenuto nell’agenda neoliberista, definendone infine la diretta conseguenza della sua implementazione: la società odierna dominata dal fenomeno della globalizzazione. La tesi si focalizzerà poi sul caso concreto della crisi del debito greco all’interno dell’unione monetaria e delle successive implementazioni di politiche di austerità, rivelatesi inefficaci. Verranno poi descritte le conseguenze di queste politiche, principalmente riprendendo quelle citate dall’articolo iniziale: l’iniquità della distribuzione della ricchezza e la stratificazione sociale come cause di insostenibilità del sistema mondo in cui oggi viviamo.

Purpose: There is an increasing interest in sustainability, literature testifies that more and more customers are requesting sustainable products. This increasing request impacts companies that are therefore forced not only to provide sustainable alternatives but also turn their business into a more sustainable one. Due to the relatively newness of this topic there is a need to investigate how sustainable marketing strategies impact companies in the business-to-business sector. This paper is a single case study that presents how an international business-to business company is implementing sustainable marketing strategies, in their process to build a circular economy company. This research aims to describe how sustainable marketing strategies affect the implementation process of a B2B company who is moving towards a circular economy business model. Design/methodology/approach: The study has been conducted using a single case study, employing an abductive approach. Semi-structured interviews, observations, documentation and field notes were collected in a large B2B company in Sweden. Findings: The following challenges have been found to affect the implementation process of sustainable marketing strategies: terminology, communication channels, price strategy, culture, greenwashing, lack of performance measurement, lack of managerial involvement, lack of rewarding system, long decision process, poor use of cross-functional teams, lack of a clear plan, marketing strategies, proactive vs reactive. Originality/value: Since sustainability has been studied mainly in the business-to-consumer sector, this paper contributes to the existing literature because it provides an overview on how an international business-to-business company implements sustainable marketing strategies. Furthermore, the study also brings up the challenges that obstacles the implementation, giving useful insights to companies that would like to approach sustainability more or are in the process of implementing sustainability. Additionally, this paper highlights the importance of involving management and employees around the world and creating a single coherent understanding of sustainability in order to reflect such cohesiveness also in the marketing strategy. Nowadays, with concerns about environmental and health issues, the awareness of more environmentally friendly and sustainable waste disposal is growing. However, due to the widespread disposal of waste items in the fashion field, such as landfills and incineration, the problems caused by these disposal methods cannot meet people’s sustainable needs for waste treatment. Therefore, the project is based on consumers, focusing on the sustainable treatment of used garments, and provides some possibilities for solving problems related to other types of used products. In order to achieve this goal, this project starts from the literature review of garments disposal behavior, and through the understanding of the theories such as life cycle assessment and waste hierarchy, as well as the collection and analysis of user survey data, completed the design of the project solution. By reference to the theoretical framework and application of the methodological framework, the project finally proposed a solution composed of three consumer-oriented design ideas, mainly in the form of social design to facilitate people’s recycling, reuse and other sustainable disposals of used garments.

The impact of unsustainable human actions has grown to become the most significant underlying factor of current environmental problems, which stresses the need for a large-scale transformative change in our modern ways of living. Sustainable development has emerged to become the primary framework to reduce climate impact, and sustainable neighbourhoods have become a highly sought out and desirable policy goal. However, there exists a concern that contemporary spatial planning policies and strategies appear to be inadequate to achieve the transformative lifestyle change needed due to their primary adoption of an ecological modernisation agenda. With this notion and by examining the ongoing urban development project Täby Park in Täby municipality is the aim of this thesis to investigate to what extent and how a more environmentally sustainable way of living can be met through (supporting) contemporary spatial planning and design policies, strategies, and its physical manifestation in the built environment. For this has a theoretical framework rooted in social and behavioural science been adopted to understand the relationship between sustainable lifestyles and influencing factors. The empirical material is based on conducted interviews with residents, public and private actors, a questionnaire, and a site visit. The findings of this study show that the development of Täby Park is primarily rooted in an approach of behavioural-economics, which in large has translated to an ecological modernisation agenda. Overall, it can be concluded that a more environmentally sustainable way of living can to a certain extent be met through the applied policies and strategies in Täby Park. Although the residents perceive that factors rooted in rational reasoning hold the most significant impact on their adoption of more environmentally sustainable actions in their everyday life, do the findings illustrate that the residents generally deviate from rational reasoning of decision-making. This illustrates that the desired sustainability vision cannot be modelled after generic assumptions of behavioural-economics.

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are widely recognized as an important part of the economy, particularly important in countries like Mexico, where SMEs make up almost 90% of the industry. However these SMEs do not consider their impact on the environment and surrounding communities to be a priority, and lack the proper information with regards to how to reduce it. The research presented in this thesis sets out to explore the implementation of Sustainable Design in Mexican SMEs, through the use of a guidebook in the form of a web based tool. This tool, tailored to the specific needs of the Mexican SMEs' aims to deliver·· clear and concise information, raise awareness and improve their environmental and social performance. Through a series of studies it was possible to identify that the socio-cultural and political context of the Mexican SMEs have an impact on the implementation of Sustainable Design. As well, these studies analyze if the proposed prototype tool is capable of working without external support. The findings from the studies were used to develop a theoretical framework for the future development of Sustainable Design information tools aimed at Mexican SMEs.

The overall motivation of this research is to understand the adoption of sustainable innovations and sustainable behavior, with a focus on sustainable mobility-related behaviors.
Contrary to the organizational adoption, research on consumer adoption investigates the determinants of adoption/non-adoption without considering the innovation-decision as a process. Hence, the first chapter aims to explore the existence of distinct stages and identify different determinants of each stage of sustainable innovation adoption. A sustainable technology, namely alternative engine cars (AECs) is selected as an empirical setting. Data is collected through an online survey in two different steps. The results from the first survey (N=110) confirmed the existence of five distinct stages namely knowledge, persuasion, decision, implementation, and confirmation in line with Rogers' (2003) consumer adoption process. Based on these results, further data was collected (N=246) in order to identify different determinants of each of these stages. Different determinants in terms of perceived innovation characteristics of AECs were analyzed using a structural model. The study contributes by confirming the existence of distinct stages and developing a framework which not only determines the direction but also the strength of the relationships between different determinants and adoption stages.
In the second chapter, the author submits that particularly for sustainable innovations, value proposition innovation (VPI) is salient since it is generally assumed that these technologies create value, yet customers fail to appreciate this value. Therefore, the research aims to answer how can a value proposition be innovated and how can VPI increase the attractiveness of sustainable technologies which otherwise are hard to diffuse? The author studied the case of a novel sustainable technology, namely vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and adopted a mixed-method approach building on two focus groups (N=8) and online experts surveys from Dutch sustainable car enthusiasts (N=54). The results suggest that value propositions increase new technologies attractiveness by (re)configuring different bundle of attributes according to values expressed by customer segments. The results suggest that VPI provides a solution to accelerate the diffusion of new technologies suffering from lock-in.
The third chapter argues that a successful shift to sustainable travel modes does not solely depend on regulatory and technology push, as it should rather focus on changing individual behaviors as well. Hence, it is vital to understand the key drivers of such travel mode choices. Although there is a vast literature on the topic, the results are still inconsistent and inconclusive. Hence, the study aims to systematically analyze and synthesize the findings in the literature by examining the predictive capability of psychological and behavioral correlates of both, actual behavior and behavioral intention. A meta-analysis was conducted followed by moderator analyses of 58 primary studies. Results suggest that besides intentions, habits and past use represent the most relevant predictor of behavior, followed by constructs referring to the Theory of Planned Behavior framework. Environmental variables play a relevant role in shaping behavioral intentions but not actual behaviors, signaling a deep intention-behavior gap. The moderator analysis confirm that behaviors’ operationalization and measurement in primary studies causes heterogeneity in outcomes the most, above trip purpose, sample type and year of the study, while location does not appear as a relevant moderator. These results have theoretical as well as practical implications.

The objective of this thesis is to explore the procedural and substantive changes that are required to create communities that are sustainable in ecological and social terms, both on a global and local level.
Current environmental problems such as global warming, ozone depletion, acid rain and deforestation indicate that human activity is changing the biosphere at an unprecedented rate. While the western world celebrates the apparent triumph of the capitalist industrial free market system, the by-products of industrialization, including the deteriorating health of the biosphere and the increasing demands of developing nations, appear to pose serious threats to the long term sustainability of biological communities including human communities.
A community is defined geographically by its physical structure, socially by its shared values, and politically by its capacity for self-determination. Creating a sustainable community requires that fundamental change occurs physically, to minimize a community's impact on ecological systems; socially, to establish a consensus on ecological and social values for the community; and, politically, to improve the capability of communities to implement appropriate locally-based solutions to environmental and social problems.
The fact that western society has allowed life-threatening global environmental and social problems to emerge indicates that there may be a serious flaw in the way the dominant society perceives reality and humanity's place in the world. Consequently, this thesis begins with an analysis of the flaws in the dominant world view and the potential for an emerging ecological world view to form the basis for defining a sustainable
community and establishing principles for ecological and social sustainability to guide community development.
A sustainable community is defined as a community that is responsible, caring, empowered, healthy, and most importantly, in balance with nature. While there are numerous approaches to creating sustainable communities, the choices that a community should make are clearer if the community has a set of values or principles to define the goals they are trying to achieve. The principles for ecological sustainability presented in this thesis are based on current ecological theories and reflect the need for communities to preserve biological diversity, maintain the productive capacity of ecosystems, integrate human activity with nutrient cycles, minimize resource and energy consumption, and establish a dynamic equilibrium between human and natural systems. The principles for social sustainability are based on current literature and emphasize the need for communities to change societal values, meet basic needs, achieve equity, promote self-determination, and create a sustainable economy.
This thesis proposes that creating a sustainable community involves both designing procedural mechanisms to support social transformation, and implementing substantive changes to ensure the long-term sustainability of the community. A process for change must include mechanisms to build community consensus on the need and direction of change, and to co-ordinate actions both within the community and with other levels of government. Specific examples of necessary substantive changes are provided based on the application of the principles for ecological and social sustainability to many aspects of community activity including land use planning, economic development, waste management, resource use, and transportation. A short examination of various models of sustainable community initiatives are provided to illustrate a variety of experiments in

The overall aim of this research was to improve scientific knowledge of the reactions that occur in, and the resulting properties of, lime mortars. Various aspects of lime mortar were Initially investigated. Firstly, Raman spectroscopy was used to study the hydration of lime which provided an insight into the phases present and their rate of hydration. Secondly, lime was produced from the calcination of egg-shell. The optimum calcination conditions found to produce the strongest mortar were 900°C for 12 hours. Egg-shell lime mortar had exceptionally high strength which was attributed to the negative effect of shrinking and compaction of the lime during curing.

This aim is subsequently met by: • hypothesising how the applicant's publications provide a representation of SUD able to get beyond the state-of-the-art and offer a conceptual framework capable of uncovering the positive role land and property can play in sustaining urban development; • reviewing the research undertaken by the applicant to define SUD and develop a framework for analysis, set of protocols and directory of assessment methods to evaluate the sustainability of urban development; • highlighting the possibility there is for the valuation methodologies and investment appraisal techniques underlying the use of land and exchange of property, to be constructive in terms of the relationship their corporate strategies and financial instruments have to the environment; • illustrating how it is possible to compute the informational basis of property management and draw upon the intelligence this offers cities to develop electronically-enhanced services underpinned by e-learning platforms, knowledge management systems and digital libraries, capable of supporting environmental improvements; • showing how the environmental improvements that surface from such developments in turn support the community-based approach to urban regeneration which underlies the UK government's socially-inclusive and participatory venture into ecological modernisation and democratic renewal; • providing examples of where the management of property by cities is intelligent, not only because the environmental improvement supporting their community-based approach to urban regeneration are socially-inclusive and participatory, but for the reason the ecological modernisation and process of democratic renewal underlying these developments meet the sustainability requirement; • reflecting on the contribution this representation of SUD as informational, intelligent, socially-inclusive, participatory, community-based, regenerative, ecological and democratic, makes to what is known and understood about the subject. Skanska is one of the leading construction companies in Sweden when it comes to sustainable construction. Buildings are responsible for 40 % of both the global energy consumption and the global resources. With the current demand on housing, the building pace needs to increase whilst improving on sustainability. The level of industrialisation in the construction sector is still low compared to other sectors. Prefabricated components such as walls or slabs are common and during the last decade, prefabricated bathroom modules (henceforth referred as pods) have been introduced and are now used quite frequently in commercial buildings. A pod is a completely factory manufactured bathroom that is just lifted in place. The aim of this master thesis is to evaluate pods from a sustainable perspective and compare them to a traditional site built bathroom. Data is collected through field studies, interviews, a survey, reference projects and research.The analysis consists of seven key factors, Design, Human Resources, Waste, Time, Transport, Economy and Energy. The analysis resulted in improving four of the seven key factors when using pods; Human resources, waste, time and economy. The main benefit was reduced production time and thereby large cost savings, that for the reference project was 6,6 % of the total project cost. Usually, life cycle costs are not included in the initial costings, which gives a misleading price. Pods are a suitable concept for projects with at least 25-30 bathrooms, where the end user does not affect the design and where there is at least 20 bathrooms for each model.<br>Skanska är ett av de ledande byggföretagen inom hållbarhet i Sverige. Byggnader står för 40 % av både den globala energianvändningen och de globala resurserna. På grund av dagens rådande bostadsbrist behöver byggtakten öka och samtidigt bli hållbarare. Industrialiseringen inom byggsektorn är jämfört med andra branscher låg, men prefabricerade komponenter såsom väggar och bjälklag används i stor utsträckning. Under det senaste decenniet har även prefabricerade badrumsmoduler blivit allt vanligare i kommersiella projekt. En modul är ett komplett badrum, tillverkat i fabrik, som enbart lyfts på plats och kopplas in. Syftet med arbetet är att utvärdera modulkonceptet ur ett hållbarhetsperspektiv och att jämföra det med ett traditionellt platsbyggt badrum. Data har samlats in genom studiebesök, intervjuer, enkät, referensprojekt och bakgrundsstudier. Analysen baseras på sju nyckeltal, design, personalresurser, spill och förluster, tid, transport, ekonomi samt energi. Användning av moduler resulterar i en förbättring i fyra av sju nyckeltal, personalresurser, spill och förluster, tid och ekonomi. Största fördelen är den förkortade produktionstiden, vilket i sin tur leder till minskade kostnader. För referensprojektet blev kostnadsbesparingarna 6,6 % av den totala projektkostnaden. Vanligtvis är livscykelkostnader i dagsläget inte inräknade i de initiala kalkylerna, vilket ger en missvisande projektkostnad. Moduler är lämpade för projekt med minst 25-30 badrum, där slutanvändaren inte påverkar design och där det är minst 20 badrum per modell.

Conventionally, the neoclassical economic discourse is used to interpret sustainability. Sustainability is regarded as an economic problem and sustainability policies focus on maintaining various forms of capital. This approach is conceptually inadequate and it is unable to recognise or correct systemic non‐sustainability that perpetuates unsustainable behaviour.This thesis challenges the epistemological authority of neoclassical economics as being an appropriate policy framework for creating effective sustainability policy.The extent, significance and persistence of sustainability issues suggest thatremediation is beyond the capacity of conventional policy approaches. The newunderstandings of complexity and uncertainty make new conceptual andmethodological demands on policy makers. The dominance and intransigence ofthe neoclassical economic episteme means that changes towards sustainability aremore than simple reform processes; conceptual and cognitive change is needed.This thesis suggests that economics needs to be, and can be, reconceptualised and reframed within a sustainability‐informed ontology that includes economic, social, cultural and ecological layers. It describes a Viability Analysis framework that accommodates pluralist, multidimensional viability constructs. It proposes a sustainability‐informed system of national accounts in which economic activity is recalibrated with qualitative data within a reconceptualised sustainability‐informed taxonomy of categories. The sustainability‐informed system of national accounts provides policy makers and businesses with information that can be used to steer economic activity towards sustainability paths. Using an opt‐in approach, businesses can qualify for lower tax rates by demonstrating their movement towards sustainability. By framing economics within a sustainability‐informed ontology and accounting narrative, a symbiosis between economics and sustainability is possible so that sustainable behaviour can be economically viable, and economic viability can be sustainable.

The world faces sustainability challenges directly attributable to human behaviour, and expected to irreparably degrade the socio-ecological system. Cartography (mapping) is a diverse planning and communicating discipline used for strategic development of global and local solutions to these challenges. Its flexible yet robust technology can generate common understanding of issues and inspire successful solutions. This thesis studied community mapping, specifically how community mapping practitioners (CMPs) can use community mapping tools (CMTs) more effectively for Strategic Sustainable Development (SSD). Data of current SSD strengths of six CMTs was collected using the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD) and 13 interviews with practitioners. Thirty-six Key Elements (KEs) of guidance for CMPs to use CMTs were developed. A Compass Model was designed to interlink the KEs, in eight interrelated categories, with the ABCD Strategic Planning Process (ABCD). The results suggest that CMPs using CMTs combined with an SSD approach have the potential to create effective solutions towards sustainability.
