The suppressive action of a moving textured background on responses to moving bars was investigated in 118 striate neurons, 19 dorsal lateral geniculate neurons, and 5 perigeniculate neurons in paralyzed and anesthetized cats. In standard conditions the background was a two-dimensional (2D) noise pattern, the bar moved at optimal speed, and its contrast level was adjusted to yield 50% of the maximum response. Neuronal responses to the moving bar were suppressed when the background moved at the same speed or faster than the bar. The direction of motion of the bar had little influence. This suppressive effect was equally strong in all three experimental samples. The suppressive effect of the moving background was uniformly distributed among the cortical population, being equally strong in all layers, in all parts of the visual field representation, and for different categories of cortical cells. The suppressive effect of the moving background depended little on the structure of the background or on the speed of the bar. The suppression increased with decreasing contrast of the bar. Many (80%) cortical cells and all geniculate neurons responded to the movement of the 2D noise on its own. Most of these cells responded to isolated features (“grains”) in the pattern rather than to movement of the whole pattern. There was no difference in strength of suppression between cortical neurons responsive and unresponsive to the moving 2D noise. The possible origins of this suppressive influence of moving backgrounds and its significance for the processing of visual scenes, more complicated than a single stimulus, are discussed.

Pressure is mounting on the agricultural sector to reduce reliance on herbicides for weed control leading to increased interest in the potential of cover crops to control weeds in summer fallows. The weed suppression ability of three summer cover crop species, buckwheat, millet and teff, was evaluated in field trials at two sites near Camden, NSW in 2021. Buckwheat, millet and teff reduced weed biomass by 65%, 77% and 95%, respectively at Bringelly and by 94%, 92% and 90%, respectively at Lansdowne. Following cover crop desiccation, teff residues reduced weed emergence in subsequently planted wheat by 73% and 26% at Bringelly and Lansdowne, respectively. Overall cover crops were found to be effective in suppressing weed emergence, growth, and reproductive capacity. These studies identified teff grass as an important summer crop option for the northern grains region.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of the common bean crop grown with application of osmoprotectants based on algae of the genus Durvillaea potatorum in the winter crop season, with occurrence or not of water suppression. The experiment used a randomized block design, in split plots, arranged in a 4x7 factorial scheme, in which the plots were composed of four treatments - periods of water suppression (7, 14, 21 days and the control treatment: 100% of field capacity throughout the crop cycle) and the subplots consisted of seven types of osmoprotectants. The treatments with osmoprotectants was applied during the full flowering of the common bean. Three days after application of osmoprotectants, the treatments with suppression of irrigation were established. The use of osmoprotectants based on algae of the genus Durvillaea does not affect the variables plant height, stem diameter, stem and pod dry matter, first pod height, number of pods per plant and number of grains per pod in common bean plants cultivated with occurrence of water suppression. Common bean plants under water restriction conditions have lower leaf and shoot dry matter and lower 100-grain weight. Common bean grain yield was influenced by the type of osmoprotectants and the water suppression period.

Lead-free and eco-friendly GeTe shows promising mid-temperature thermoelectric applications. However, a low Seebeck coefficient due to its intrinsically high hole concentration induced by Ge vacancies, and a relatively high thermal conductivity result in inferior thermoelectric performance in pristine GeTe. Extrinsic dopants such as Sb, Bi, and Y could play a crucial role in regulating the hole concentration of GeTe because of their different valence states as cations and high solubility in GeTe. Here we investigate the thermoelectric performance of GeTe upon Sb doping, and demonstrate a high maximum zT value up to 1.88 in Ge0.90Sb0.10Te as a result of the significant suppression in thermal conductivity while maintaining a high power factor. The maintained high power factor is due to the markable enhancement in the Seebeck coefficient, which could be attributed to the significant suppression of hole concentration and the valence band convergence upon Sb doping, while the low thermal conductivity stems from the suppression of electronic thermal conductivity due to the increase in electrical resistivity and the lowering of lattice thermal conductivity through strengthening the phonon scattering by lattice distortion, dislocations, and twin boundaries. The excellent thermoelectric performance of Ge0.90Sb0.10Te shows good reproducibility and thermal stability. This work confirms that Ge0.90Sb0.10Te is a superior thermoelectric material for practical application.

Abstract Fine-grained visual classification (FGVC) is desired to classify sub-classes of objects in the same super-class. For the FGVC tasks, it is necessary to find subtle yet discriminative information from local areas. However, traditional FGVC approaches tended to extract strong discriminative features, and overlook some subtle yet useful features. Besides, current methods ignore the influence of background noises on feature extraction. Therefore, aggregated object localization combined with salient feature suppression are proposed, which is a stacked network. First, the feature maps extracted by the coarse network are fed into aggregated object localization to obtain complete foreground object in an image. Secondly, the refined features obtained through zooming in complete foreground object are fed into fine network. Finally, through finer network processing, the feature maps are fed into salient feature suppression module to find more valuable region discriminative features for classification. Experiment results on two datasets show that our proposed method can get superior result compared with state-of-the-art methods.

The ground cover produced by green manures has a direct influence on weed suppression and, in addition, the biomass produced by these same plants influences crop growth. This study was carried out to compare the effect of green manure species on the incidence of weeds, in sequence, in order to evaluate the effects of the use of green manure cover on the productive characteristics of maize plants. A completely randomised experimental design was used, with 11 treatments and 4 replications. The treatments were cover crops Canavalia ensiformis (T1), Cajanus cajan (T2), Stizolobium pruriens (T3), Crotalaria juncea (T4), Phaseolus vulgaris (T5), Stizolobium trigre (T6), Stizolobium aterrimum (T7), Crotalaria retusa (T8), Crotalaria breviflora (T9), Dolichos lablab (T10), and conventional system (T11). Ninety days after sowing, the green manures were cut, and 30 days after the green manures were cut, the hybrid maize Crop Top 520 was sown. The variables evaluated in relation to the planting of green manures were the green and dry biomass of green manures, alongside the green biomass of weeds and suppression of weeds. Concerning maize plants, the variables evaluated were plant height at 60 DAS, stalk diameter at 60 DAS, number of grain rows per ear, number of grains per grain row, and yield. The averages were subsequently analyzed using Tukey’s test at 95% significance level. The use of green manure significantly reduces the green mass of weeds up to 90 days due to lack of access to light of the weeds, which reduces their appearance and growth. Stizolobium aterrimum showed the best results both as a dry mass producer and weed suppressor and also as a yield enhancer in maize crops.

Aflatoxin B1 is one of the most deleterious types of mycotoxins. The application of an endophytic fungus for biodegradation or biosuppression of AFB1 production by Aspergillus flavus was investigated. About 10 endophytic fungal species, isolated from healthy maize plants, were screened for their in vitro AFs-degrading activity using coumarin medium. The highest degradation potential was recorded for Trichoderma sp. (76.8%). This endophyte was identified using the rDNA-ITS sequence as Trichoderma harzianum AYM3 and assigned an accession no. of ON203053. It caused a 65% inhibition in the growth of A. flavus AYM2 in vitro. HPLC analysis revealed that T. harzianum AYM3 had a biodegradation potential against AFB1. Co-culturing of T. harazianum AYM3 and A. flavus AYM2 on maize grains led to a significant suppression (67%) in AFB1 production. GC-MS analysis identified two AFB1-suppressing compounds, acetic acid and n-propyl acetate. Investigating effect on the transcriptional expression of five AFB1 biosynthesis-related genes in A. flavus AYM2 revealed the downregulating effects of T. harzianum AYM3 metabolites on expression of aflP and aflS genes. Using HepaRG cell line, the cytotoxicity assay indicated that T. harazianum AYM3 metabolites were safe. Based on these results, it can be concluded that T. harzianum AYM3 may be used to suppress AFB1 production in maize grains.

Intercropping of maize and legume cover crop is currently usual at low technological areas, due to some high benefits and potential such as suppressing weeds, recycling nutrients and coverage of the soil. Suppression of weed is important due to its huge competitory impact on the commercial crops. The nutrient recycling is also important becuase it reduces usage of fertilizers on low technological agriculture. The soil coverage is important to prevent the erosion and reduce the nutrient leaching. All those positive effects can be influenced by type of cultivated species on the intercropping consortium. This study aimed to evaluate the soil coverage, phytomass production and accumulation of nutrients by plants in a maize and legume intercropping system. The experiment consisted of rustic maize “Caiano de Sobrália” variety, intercropped with Brazilian velvet bean, black mucuna, lablab-bean and pigeon pea, whereas a control treatment (sole maize culture) was also added. First, the maize was sown on the experiment. 64 days after emergence (DAE) the legumes were sown. The soil cover rates were evaluated at 0, 64, 84, 120, and 144 DAE. The corn grains were harvested at 120 DAE to obtain the corn grain yield. The remaining portion of maize and entire legume plants were sampled at 144 DAE, when the accumulation of dry mass and nutrient were measured. The intercropping system did not affect the corn grain yield and the soil cover rate provided by maize plants. The black mucuna had the greatest weeds suppression and nutrient accumulation among the legumes cover crops evaluated.

The establishment and management of nine cover crops in Kentucky production systems were evaluated in field experiments over a 2-yr period. ‘Wheeler’ rye, ‘Barsoy’ barley, and ‘Tyler’ wheat cereal grains produced greater biomass (180 to 260 g/m2) than the pasture species tall fescue, creeping red fescue, and white clover (55 to 110 g/m2). ‘Kentucky 31’ tall fescue, creeping red fescue, and white clover proved most difficult to control, and significant regrowth occurred regardless of herbicide or rate applied. HOE-39866 (1.7 kg ai/ha) was effective in rapidly controlling all cover crops except tall fescue by 30 days after application. Sethoxydim and fluazifop (0.4 and 0.3 kg ai/ha, respectively) effectively controlled the cereals and two ryegrass species. Glyphosate applied at 1.1 and 2.2 kg ai/ha was also effective, while 0.6 kg ai/ha controlled only cereal grain growth adequately. After chemical control, pasture grass plots contained fewest weeds/m2with some reductions likely due to density and regrowth of the sods. Cover crops were effective in suppressing weed growth at 45 days after chemical control. However, significant weed growth existed in all cover crop plots by 60 days after kill. Row crop establishment increased linearly with increasing glyphosate rate. Cereal grain covers provided the most compatible planting situations for greatest seedling establishment, with rye and wheat providing greatest weed suppression. Generally, increased weed suppression provided by a cover crop was accompanied by reduced row crop establishment, with greatest reductions observed in pasture grass plots. Cucumber was most easily established while snap pea was most difficult.

Beneficial invertebrates (predators and parasitoids) can make significant contributions to the suppression of insect pest populations in many cropping systems. In Australia, natural enemies are incorporated into integrated pest management programs in cotton and horticultural agroecosystems. They are also often key components of effective programs for the management of insect pests of grain crops in other parts of the world. However, few studies have examined the contribution of endemic natural enemies to insect pest suppression in the diverse grain agroecosystems of Australia. The potential of these organisms is assessed by reviewing the role that natural enemies play in the suppression of the major pests of Australian grain crops when they occur in overseas grain systems or other local agroecosystems. The principal methods by which the efficacy of biological control agents may be enhanced are examined and possible methods to determine the impact of natural enemies on key insect pest species are described. The financial and environmental benefits of practices that encourage the establishment and improve the efficacy of natural enemies are considered and the constraints to adoption of these practices by the Australian grains industry are discussed.

It is found that for granular indium films with activated conductivity and complete suppression of Josephson tunneling between the grains the transition of grains into the superconducting state is accompanied by a large additional increase in the resistance as the temperature is lowered. A magnetic field weakens this effect, which leads to anomalously large negative magnetoresistance. A qualitative explanation of this effect, taking into account the decrease in the number of normal electrons in the grains as they make the transition into the superconducting state, is given.

The hexagonal domain suppression-effects in cubic-GaNAs grown by metalorganic chemical-vapor deposition (MOCVD) is reported. A thin buffer layer (20 nm) was first grown on a substrate at 853 K using trimethylgallium and dimethylhydrazine (DMHy), and GaNAs samples were grown at different AsH3 flow rates (0 ∼ 450 μmol/min) at 1193 K. As a result, three types of surface morphologies were obtained: the first was a smooth surface (AsH3 = 0 μmol/min); the second was a mirrorlike surface having small and isotropic grains (AsH3 : 45 ∼ 225 μmol/min ); and the third involved three-dimensional surface morphologies (above 450 μmol/min of AsH3 flow rate). Furthermore, it was confirmed using X-ray diffraction that the mixing ratio of hexagonal GaNAs in cubic GaNAs decreased with an increase of the AsH3 flow rate. We could obtain GaNAs having a cubic component of above 85% at AsH3 flow rates above 20 μmol/min. Therefore, the MOCVD growth method using AsH3 and DMHy was mostly effective for suppressing hexagonal GaNAs. It was observed that the photoluminescence intensity of GaNAs was decreased with increase of arsine flow rate.

Abstract We study the internal and external alignment of carbonaceous grains in the interstellar medium (ISM) within the Radiative Torque (RAT) paradigm. For internal alignment (IA), we find that hydrogenated amorphous carbon (HAC) grains having nuclear paramagnetism due to hydrogen protons have efficient nuclear relaxation, whereas both HAC and graphite grains can have efficient inelastic relaxation at both low-J and high-J attractors. For external alignment, HAC and pure graphite grains can align with the radiation direction (k-RAT) at low-J attractors but cannot have stable alignment at high-J attractors due to the suppression of radiative precession. However, HAC grains can align with the magnetic field (B-RAT) at high-J attractors due to fast Larmor precession compared to gas collisions. For HAC grains drifting through the ISM, they can align along the induced electric field (E-RAT) at low-J attractors due to the fast electric precession and only small HAC grains can align at high-J attractors. Nuclear paramagnetic relaxation is inefficient for HAC due to the suppression of nuclear susceptibility. We then study the alignment of carbon dust in the envelope of a C-rich Asymptotic Giant Branch star (IRC+10216) and find that grains aligned at low-J attractors may occur via k-RAT with the wrong IA in the inner region but via B-RAT in the outer region. However, grains aligned at high-J attractors have the right IA alignment via k-RAT due to efficient inelastic relaxation. The polarization pattern observed toward IRC+10216 by SOFIA/HAWC+ can be reproduced when only grains at low-J attractors are present due to the removal of grains at high-J attractors by the RAT disruption.

Chatter vibrations arising during machining operations are detrimental for cutting process performance, since they may cause poor surface quality of the machined part and severe damages to machine tool elements. Passive approaches for chatter suppression are based on the integration of special mechanical components with high-damping properties within the machining system. They represent a good solution to this problem thanks to their intrinsic simplicity. Recently, the application of metallic lattice structures inside 3D printed parts obtained from the Selective Laser Melting technology have proven superior damping properties with respect to the same full density material. Here, this idea is further explored by considering the novel configuration where the unmelted powder grains are retained inside the lattice structure by an external shell, acting as a multiplicity of microscopic mechanical dampers. This concept is applied for passive chatter suppression of thin-walled parts that are of particular relevance for industry. Preliminary experimental investigation was first carried out on simple beam-like specimens, and then on thin-walled benchmarks that were identified through modal analysis and tested under real cutting conditions. The main conclusion is that the novel proposed configuration (lattice plus unmelted powder) has higher damping properties with respect to the full density and lattice alternatives. Accordingly, it may be successfully applied for passive chatter suppression in real machining operations.

Abstract Paddy fields are anaerobic and facilitate arsenite (As(III)) elution from the soil. Paddy-field rice accumulates arsenic (As) in its grains because silicate transporters actively assimilate As(III) during the reproductive stage. Reducing the As level in rice grains is an important challenge for agriculture. Using a forward genetic approach, we isolated a rice (Oryza sativa) mutant, low arsenic line 3 (las3), whose As levels were decreased in aerial tissues, including grains. The low-As phenotype was not observed in young plants before heading (emergence of the panicle). Genetic analyses revealed that a deficiency in alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) 2 by mutation is responsible for the phenotype. Among the three rice ADH paralogues, ADH2 was the most efficiently produced in root tissue under anaerobic conditions. In wild-type (WT), silicon and As concentrations in aerial tissues increased with growth. However, the increase was suppressed in las3 during the reproductive stage. Accordingly, the gene expression of two silicate transporters, Lsi1 and Lsi2, was increased in WT around the time of heading, whereas the increase was suppressed in las3. These results indicate that the low-As phenotype in las3 is due to silicate transporter suppression. Measurement of intracellular pH by 31P-nuclear magnetic resonance revealed intracellular acidification of las3 roots under hypoxia, suggesting that silicate transporter suppression in las3 might arise from an intracellular pH decrease, which is known to be facilitated by a deficiency in ADH activity under anaerobic conditions. This study provides valuable insight into reducing As levels in rice grains.

In this study, to understand oxygen effects on workability of titanium, edge cracking and microstructure changes with the oxygen content variations in the cold rolled sheets were observed carefully and discussed. The higher oxygen content of titanium sheet, the more the edge cracks occurred after cold rolling deformation. While the specimen containing low oxygen became fine grained structures after the cold rolling, the other high oxygen sheets consisted of relatively coarse and elongated grains. The fine-grained structures was assumed to come from an active twinning behavior, meanwhile the other’s elongated structures were due to the twinning suppression by increasing oxygen contents. In addition, distinct shear bands were appeared in the high oxygen sheets after cold rolling. The high oxygen contents may multiply dislocation density by suppression of twinning and promoting dislocation slips. The increased dislocations can also produce a concentration of strain, slip bands thus appears during the cold rolling deformation. These slip bands cause the edge cracking in the higher oxygen sheets.

This study on the effects of spacing on growth, yield and weed suppression of rice variety in Port Harcourt was conducted at the Faculty of Agriculture Teaching and Research Farm, University of Port Harcourt. Experimental design used was Randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four treatments (15cm x 15cm, 20cm x 20cm, 25cm x 25cm and 30cm x 30cm) and replicated four times. Data were collected on growth parameters such as plant height, leaf area, numbers of leaves, numbers of tillers, while yield parameters were on weight of grains, weight of panicles, weight of fresh tillers, weight of dry tillers and number of panicles at harvest. Weed parameters were also taken. The result of the study showed that a spacing of 25cm x 25cm had a higher growth rate of 114.70cm and yield of 302.70kg/ha compared to narrow row spacing of 15cm x 15cm which had 102.70cm and 220.33kg/ha respectively. The result also showed that significant differences were observed on weight of panicles, weight of fresh tillers, weight of dry tillers and weight of grains. Therefore, farmers are advised to use spacing of 25cm x 25cm for optimum yield and growth of the rice variety; and weed suppression was better in narrow spacing of 15cm x 15cm in the study area.

Lupin (Lupinus sp.) produces protein-rich grains, but its adoption in cropping systems suffers from both its low competitive ability against weeds and its high yield variability. Compared with legume sole cropping, grain legume–cereal intercropping benefits include better weed suppression and higher yield and yield stability. However, the potential of enhancing crop competitive ability against weeds in additive winter grain legume–cereal intercrops is not well-known, and this potential in long crop cycles is even less studied. We studied how intercropping with a triticale (×Triticosecale) alters weed biomass and productivity of winter white lupin (Lupinus albus L.). The experimental setup consisted of eleven sites during a two-year period in western France. In each site-year, winter white lupin sole cropping was compared to winter white lupin-triticale intercropping in an additive sowing design. We found that intercropping reduced weed biomass at lupin flowering by an average of 63%. The rapid growth and high soil N acquisition of triticale compensated for the low competitive ability of lupin against weeds until lupin flowering. Competition from triticale in the intercrop reduced lupin grain yield (−34%), but intercropping produced a higher total grain yield (+37%) than did lupin sole cropping while maintaining the total protein grain yield.

A metalorganic precursor containing Ti and Pt was synthesized using Ti alkoxide derivative, amino acid, and platinum salt. The decomposition behavior of the precursor and thin-film formation were examined in terms of microstructure evolution and crystallization. The precursor yielded anatase at 400 °C. Grain growth of platinum particles and TiO2 grains was suppressed even at 800 °C in the films. Suppression of grain growth was attributed to an effect of film thickness.

Inexpensive perovskite light-emitting devices fabricated by a simple wet chemical approach have recently demonstrated very prospective characteristics such as narrowband emission, low turn-on bias, high brightness, and high external quantum efficiency of electroluminescence, and have presented a good alternative to well-established technology of epitaxially grown III-V semiconducting alloys. Engineering of highly efficient perovskite light-emitting devices emitting green, red, and near-infrared light has been demonstrated in numerous reports and has faced no major fundamental limitations. On the contrary, the devices emitting blue light, in particular, based on 3D mixed-halide perovskites, suffer from electric field-induced phase separation (segregation). This crystal lattice defect-mediated phenomenon results in an undesirable color change of electroluminescence. Here we report a novel approach towards the suppression of the segregation in single-layer perovskite light-emitting electrochemical cells. Co-crystallization of direct band gap CsPb(Cl,Br)3 and indirect band gap Cs4Pb(Cl,Br)6 phases in the presence of poly(ethylene oxide) during a thin film deposition affords passivation of surface defect states and an increase in the density of photoexcited charge carriers in CsPb(Cl,Br)3 grains. Furthermore, the hexahalide phase prevents the dissociation of the emissive grains in the strong electric field during the device operation. Entirely resistant to 5.7 × 106 V·m−1 electric field-driven segregation light-emitting electrochemical cell exhibits stable emission at wavelength 479 nm with maximum external quantum efficiency 0.7%, maximum brightness 47 cd·m−2, and turn-on bias of 2.5 V.

Walp.) was conducted at the Department of Crop and Soil Science Laboratory, Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State, Nigeria. To determine the percentage (%) efficacy of plant essential oils and to evaluate the best plant essential oil on the suppression of the pathogen cultured and treated Potatoes Dextrose Agar (PDA) plates with the different plant essential oils concentration levels (0.1, 0.01, and 0.001%). This experiment was arranged in Complete Randomized Design (CRD) and each treatment was replicated three times and each replicate contained 12 petri dishes. The result shows that ginger oil at 0.1 in all the days of the bioassay assessment, particularly, from day 6-day10 proved more effective in suppressing the teste pathogen (A. niger), this could be the present of the active ingredient (Zingerone) on the treatment. Therefore, this result should be encouraged for Cowpea farmers as seed treatment before storage to prevent Cowpea weevils (Callosobruchus maculatus) as a grain storage insect pest, that causes serious destruction on the stored grains.

Bucket elevators are devices for the vertical conveying of bulk materials. They can be found in many plants where silos are used. There are different designs of bucket elevators, whereby for the conveying of combustible bulk materials twin-leg bucket elevators are widely used. The conveyed bulk materials might be quite different, e.g. granulates, grains or pellets, which can contain more or less fine dust. The fine dust will be whirled up and dispersed by the moving buckets. Explosive dust/air mixtures can occur inside the elevator. Bucket elevators are frequently reported as causes of dust explosions [1, 2]. Depending on both the practical operating conditions and the explosion characteristics of the bulk material in many cases explosion protection by prevention of ignition sources are not sufficient to minimize the risk of a dust explosion. Therefore, additional explosion protection by design measures is required in order to limit the dangerous effects of a dust explosion. The technical rules or standards, however, which are available for the layout of explosion protection by design measures, e.g. explosion pressure venting or explosion suppression can not be used due to the specific geometry of bucket elevators. Because there was no sufficient data base to design explosion resistant bucket elevators in combination with explosion venting or explosion suppression, large scale tests were carried out on the test site of BGN and FSA in Kappelrodeck, Germany. In this paper the latest results and findings will be presented which can be used for the practical design of explosion venting and explosion suppression on bucket elevators in process industries.

L’étude des couples δήμιος-ϊδιος et δήμος-οίκος dans les textes grecs archaïques (Homère, Hésiode, les Hymnes) montre qu’on ne peut y retrouver l’opposition moderne entre public et privé. En revanche, l’analyse du rapport entre les signifiants δήμος et δημός confirme l’interprétation avancée par Michael Nagler d’une relation entre les deux termes. L’association forrmulaire entre πίων et δήμος implique que c’est d’abord le «territoire» qui est qualifié de «gras», avec dans certains cas un glissement vers la «graisse» (δημός), ce qui pourrait expliquer les formules désignant le roi comme «dévoreur du peuple» (δημοβόρος βασιλεύς), mais aussi «dévoreur de graisse», et fournit une nouvelle interprétation du nom de l’aède Démodokos. On peut par conséquent affirmer que, par ses connotations, le terme δήμος se situe à un croisement de la notion de partage : du territoire, des honneurs (la graisse), entre peuple et rois, entre hommes et dieux.

The experiment was conducted to determine the efficacy of three plants ethanolic extracts against maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais) on stored maize grains (Zea mays). Five different ethanolic concentrations (0.5 mg/L, 1.0 mg/L, 2.0 mg/L, 4.0 mg/L and 8.0 mg/L) were made from the leaves of Hyptis suaveolens, Alstonia boonei and Tephrosia vogelii with 0.0 mg/L as the control (ethanol) and applied onto the maize grains by dipping. Theexperiment consists of six treatments (including control) and was laid in completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. Data were collected for adult mortality, number of eggs, larval development and percentage grain damage. The data were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) at 5% probability level with Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) used to separate the means that were significant. The result obtainedrevealed significant difference (P≤ 0.05) between the concentrations over the control in terms of toxicity, oviposition, induced adult mortality and progeny suppression. However, the extracts from Tephrosia vogelii are the most toxic and produced the best effect with LC of 4.85 mg/L at 24 hours of exposure and 1.94 mg/L at 48 50 hours of exposure. Similar result was found in terms of adult mortality and oviposition suppression. The effectof the extracts is concentration-dependent increase with increase in concentration. The percentage decrease in weight due to the weevil's infestation was found to be reduced with increase in concentrations. Thus, 8.0 mg/L of the ethanolic extracts of Tephrosia vogelii is recommended for biological control of Sitophilus zeamais against stored maize grains. The effect of Fusarium tumidum a potential mycoherbicide on gorse seedling emergence and growth was examined in three experiments In Experiment 1 F tumiduminoculated wheat grains (one two or three) were placed close to pregerminated gorse seeds at sowing Shoot and root dry weights of inoculated seedlings were lower than the control treatment at all three inoculum densities but there was no significant difference in percentage emergence In Experiments 2 and 3 two inoculated wheat grains were placed in contact with the seedlings at sowing Less than 50 of inoculated seedlings emerged compared with 97 in the control treatments from both experiments Soon after emergence about onethird of the inoculated seedlings that had emerged died from dampingoff disease caused by F tumidum Shoot and root dry weights of inoculated seedlings were significantly lower than the control treatment The results suggest that F tumidum can suppress gorse seedling emergence and growth

We report on the significant suppression of randomness of the electrically pumped random lasing (RL) from ZnO-based metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) structured light-emitting devices (LEDs), by means of adopting the appropriately patterned hydrothermal ZnO films featuring large crystal grains as the light-emitting layer. The hydrothermal ZnO films on silicon substrates, with the crystal grains sized over 500 nm, were firstly patterned into a number of square blocks separated by streets by using laser direct writing photolithography. Based on such patterned ZnO films, the MIS (Au/SiO<sub>2</sub>/ZnO) structured LEDs on silicon were prepared. Under the same injection current, the LED with the patterned ZnO film exhibited much fewer RL modes than the counterpart with the non-patterned ZnO film and, moreover, the former exhibited ever-fewer RL modes with the decreasing block size. Besides, the wavelength of the strongest RL modes from the LED with the patterned ZnO film fluctuated in a much narrower range with respect to that from the LED with the non-patterned ZnO film. It is worth mentioning that the LED with the patterned hydrothermal ZnO film can even be pumped into the single-mode RL under the desirable conditions such as low injection current and small patterned blocks. Moreover, the comparative investigation indicated that the LED with the large-grain hydrothermal ZnO film exhibited the smaller RL threshold current than the counterpart with the small-grain sputtered ZnO film, and, the former had fewer RL modes and a higher output lasing power than the latter under the same injection current. As for the physical mechanism underlying the aforementioned results, it is analyzed as follows. Regarding the LED with the patterned ZnO film, on one hand, due to limited numbers of crystal grains and grain boundaries within a single block, the multiple optical scattering is remarkably suppressed. Then, the paths through which the net optical gain and therefore the lasing action can be achieved via the multiple optical scattering are much fewer than those in the case of the non-patterned ZnO film. On the other hand, due to optical gain competition among different RL modes occurring within the limited space of a single block, the RL modes with significant spatial overlap could not lase simultaneously. For the two-fold reasons as mentioned above, the LED exhibits ever-fewer RL modes with decreasing size of blocks. Moreover, the inter-block optical coupling enables the optical gain competition among different RL modes to be more violent within a single block, leading to further reduction of RL modes.

The mechanical properties of Al-Cu-Li alloys after different pretreatments were investigated through tensile testing at 25 and −196 °C, and the corresponding microstructure characteristics were obtained through optical metallography, scanning electron microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. An increasing mechanism of both strength and ductility at cryogenic temperatures was revealed. The results show that the hot deformation pretreatment before homogenization promoted the precipitation of Al3Zr particles, improved particle distribution, and inhibited local precipitation-free zones (PFZ). Both hot deformation pretreatment before homogenization and cryogenic temperature were able to improve strength and ductility. The former improved strength by promoting the precipitation of Al3Zr particles while enhancing the strengthening effect of the second-phase particles and reducing the thickness of the coarse-grained layer. Meanwhile, the increase in ductility is attributable to the decrease in thickness of the coarse-grained layer, which reduced the deformation incompatibility between the coarse and fine grains and increased the strain-hardening index. The latter improved the strength by suppressing dynamic recovery during the deformation process, increasing the dislocation density, and enhancing the work hardening effect. Additionally, the increase in ductility is attributable to the suppression of planar slip and strengthening of grain boundaries, which promoted the deformation in grain interiors and made the deformation more uniform.
