Abstract (sommario):
Within the western understanding of a nuclear family and the idea of good motherhood, the need for grandparental support is commonly viewed as an expression of deficient motherhood. Young mothers are often seen as incapable of maternal practices and as being in need of support from their extended family. An alternative view is that too much support might result in the grandmothers taking on the role of mother. This paper explores research around the ambivalent meanings of grandparental support in young Swedish mothers’ narratives. In this research, we identified three repertoires: inhibiting, being-there-no-matter-what and responsibility. Mothers who were following their expected life course achieved a subject position as a “real mother” within a functioning nuclear family. Mothers deviating from their expected life course achieved a subject position as either a “mother in becoming” with a functional and supportive extended family or as a “real mother” with a dysfunctional and non-supportive extended family. In the case of young mothers who are seen as insufficient, motherhood might become negotiable and fluid between the biological mother and the young mother’s own mother.

Abstract (sommario):
Background Many women experience their childbirth as traumatic, and 4-6% of mothers present with postnatal post-traumatic stress disorder. Aims To measure the relationship between obstetric intervention, perceived support in childbirth and mothers' experiences of postnatal trauma, and to identify salient aspects of the birth experience that are considered traumatic. Methods A total of 222 women in their first year postpartum were recruited between October and December 2018 via local mother and baby groups in southwest England (UK) and online social media pages. They completed an online survey regarding their birth experience. Further insight into mother's birth experiences was garnered through free-text responses in the survey. Results Overall, 29% of mothers experienced a traumatic birth and 15% met full or partial criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder. Feeling supported mediated the relationship between obstetric intervention and postnatal trauma symptoms. Conclusions This study reinforces the value of supportive healthcare professionals and the power of a nurturing environment, which can buffer the potentially negative effects of an obstetrically complicated birth on postnatal trauma symptoms.

Abstract (sommario):
About one-third of custodial mothers choose not to pursue a child support award even though it can be a significant source of income. A qualitative study was conducted with 43 mothers who have each had at least one child in a nonmarital relationship, to learn more about how mothers make the decision to file or not file for child support. The findings indicate that a key determinant in a mother's decision is the quality of her relationship with the father: a mother is less likely to file when the relationship is good and more likely to file when the relationship is poor or has ended. Other key determinants are family influence and availability of information about filing. Visitation was not found to influence these decisions. Unfortunately, mothers are often making their decisions without access to accurate and timely information. Social workers frequently are employed in settings that serve families faced with decisions about child support, and have numerous opportunities for intervention by providing both information and guidance about the decision.

Abstract (sommario):
This study extends our understanding of the positive relationship between kin-based child care support and mothers’ ability to stay in the workforce by examining why and how women seek such help. Using 100 in-depth interviews with Korean mothers, I find that although child care provided by grandmothers helps mothers maintain their employment, a mother will ask for support only when she constructs strong career aspirations and generates agreement amongst family members that she deserves support. Both of these center around the notion of who deserves to work as a mother. Mothers’ explanations of why they deserve support vary based on their educational backgrounds: less-educated mothers stress economic stability, whereas better-educated mothers emphasize the symbolic meaning of sustaining their high public status. Most mothers, however, feel the need to “prove” to themselves and to certain others that they deserve child care support. Based on these findings, I develop a theory of deservingness to explain how mothers account for their work and make decisions to seek child care support.

Abstract (sommario):
Objectives: We developed a comprehensive measure to evaluate 11 domains of maternal social support for physical activity (PA) among Latina adolescents. Methods: The 26-item questionnaire included a version for mothers to rate how often they engaged in behaviors supporting their daughters' PA, and a version for daughters to rate how often their mothers engaged in the same behaviors. Bivariate correlations examined associations between mother-daughter perceived support for daughter's moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA), and associations between daughter's perceived support for PA and current MVPA. Results: Twenty-one Latina adolescents, which included 20 adolescent-mother dyads, enrolled in the study. Mother-daughter ratings of support showed significant positive correlations for reminders (r = .573, p = .01), watching daughters' sports (r = .566, p = .01), limit-setting (r = .564, p = .01), encouragement (r = .561, p = .01), transportation (r = .544, p = .02). We found statistically significant associations between MVPA and daughters' ratings of their mothers valuing (r = .544, p = .02) and facilitating PA (r = .48, p = .05). Conclusions: Mothers accurately perceive several supportive behaviors for PA given to daughters, but only daughters' perception of received support predicts their MVPA.

Abstract (sommario):
The achievement rates for exclusive breastfeeding are still not encouraging. One of the factors that caused it is lack of support from the mothers’ husbands or family in the process of exclusive breastfeeding. This support is very pivotal since it may motivate and give mothers the confidence to breastfeed. To find out the relationship between family support and maternal self-efficacy in exclusive breastfeeding. This study uses a cross sectional approach, which consists of the dependent variable (self-efficacy) and the independent variable (family support). The inclusion criteria are as follow: (1) breastfeeding mothers who have babies aged 1-6 months (2) mothers who live with their nuclear family in one house (3) mothers who live with their extended families in one house (4) mothers are able to read and write. The sampling technique used was non-probability purposive sampling using questionnaire as an instrument. Then the data were analyzed using the Spearman’s Rho statistical correlation test with a significance of p ≤ 0.05. The total respondents of this study were 49 people. The most obtained data is nursing mothers who experience good self-efficacy (69.4%). Statistical test results with Spearman’s rho obtained p value = 0.000 (α < 0.05) which means that there is a relationship between family support and self-efficacy, with the strength of the relationship (r = 0.854) indicating that it is very strong with the same value direction, i.e., if the family support of the mother is lower, then the self-efficacy of the mother will be low. There is a relationship between family support and self-efficacy in breastfeeding mothers. The higher family support, the higher the level of self-efficacy

Abstract (sommario):
Background: Clinical lactation professionals, breastfeeding peer counseling, and mother-to-mother support are important sources of information and guidance for helping mothers initiate and maintain breastfeeding in the early weeks, months, and years postpartum. However, there is limited information concerning the geographic barriers that mothers face when seeking this support. Research aim: This study aimed to identify the geographic barriers to breastfeeding support, delineate gaps in access, assess inequities in the distribution of local support, and highlight the underlying differences in access and equity for different demographic and socioeconomic groups. Methods: The locations of formal breastfeeding support resources were collected for the state of Ohio for 2016 and were combined with demographic and socioeconomic estimates and derived transportation catchment areas to conduct an analysis of spatial access and equity. Results: Significant geographic gaps in formal breastfeeding support exist within the state of Ohio. Although urban areas benefit from a higher density of support options, including a wide variety of clinical experts and mother-to-mother support groups, inequities in exurban and rural areas were more strongly aligned with socioeconomic status than geography. In particular, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children offices in rural Ohio offer breastfeeding support to income-qualifying mothers but cannot address the needs of mothers who do not qualify. Conclusion: Spatial analytical approaches facilitate a more nuanced view of access and equity to breastfeeding support options, helping to both decompose important structural differences in the state of Ohio and identify locations that could benefit from additional breastfeeding support resources.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis study evaluated the responses of infant Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) to their mother's resumption of mating. Mothers and infants were observed before, during and after the mating season. Observations carried out during the mating season were subdivided according to the mother's consort activity with mature males. During consorts, significant decrements in mother-infant ventroventral contact and proximity, and in the roles played by mothers in maintaining contact and proximity were observed, while maternal rejection increased significantly. Social behaviour of infants and allomaternal care they received were unaffected by the mother's consort activity. Effects of consorts were more evident in female than in male infants, but were not influenced by the infant age or by the quality of the relationship it had with its mother before the mating season. These results do not support the hypothesis that the effects of the mother's resumption of mating may parallel those of experimental mother-infant separation.

Abstract (sommario):
Despite worldwide initiatives, the exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) rate is low. The study aims to investigate the role of fathers’ knowledge, attitude and support in formulating mothers’ practice of breastfeeding taking Bangladeshi parental cases as a sample. The study uses a standard survey instrument following the theory of planned behavior (TPB). Responses from 332 couples are accepted following a standard criteria and used for analysis. The sample is divided into sub-groups based on delivery mode—vaginal (n = 211, 64%) and cesarean section (n = 121, 36%). Based on the sub-groups, a multi-group structural equation modelling (SEM) is applied to analyze the phenomena. The study finds that a father’s knowledge in EBF can, in one way, significantly enhance mother’s knowledge by sharing and, in another way, can enhance his own attitude to offer different support to his partner/wife which induces the chances of EBF practices by mothers. The enhanced EBF knowledge of a mother raises her attitude to practice EBF, which is also positively affected by the father’s attitude. Thus, fathers’ support, coupled with mothers’ positive attitude, the mother’s intention to practice EBF as per standard guidelines.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose: The aim of this study was to clarify and define the concept of nursing support as perceived by mothers of preterm infants. Methods: The research was conducted using Schwartz-Barcott and Kim's hybrid model. Sixteen articles were analyzed during the theoretical phase. In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 mothers of preterm infants in the fieldwork phase. In the final analytical phase, the attributes of nursing support were defined. Results: There were four themes and 10 attributes of nursing support as perceived by mothers of preterm infants. "Professional care" and "emotional care for the baby" were identified as attributes of baby care support. "Information related to the disease", "inpatient environment", "baby's daily hospital life", and "mother-centered care" were identified as attributes of information delivery support. "Empathy for mothers" and "therapeutic communication with the mother" were identified as attributes for mental care support. Lastly, "providing a chance for the mother to take care of the baby" and "reinforcement of the maternal role" were identified as attributes of maternal role support. Conclusion: The 10 attributes of this study could provide a base for the development of a nursing support instrument and practical guidelines for mothers in neonatal intensive care units.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: Breastfeeding rates among urban, low-income populations are lower than the national average, and social support can affect breastfeeding initiation and duration both positively and negatively. Research aim: This study aimed to determine the effect of the presence of a support person and breastfeeding knowledge and attitudes of that person on a mother’s feeding choice and perceived level of support for her choice. Methods: Questionnaires were administered to 192 mothers receiving care for their infants in the Pediatric Practice at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, along with 74 adults accompanying these mothers. Data on demographics, feeding characteristics, and breastfeeding knowledge and attitudes were collected. Results: Analysis of the entire group of mothers found that breastfeeding-supportive knowledge and attitudes were an independent predictor of exclusive breastfeeding (odds ratio [ OR] = 1.89, 95% confidence interval [CI] [1.38, 2.60]) and any breastfeeding ( OR = 2.28, 95% CI [1.62, 3.21]). The presence of an accompanying adult was not related to feeding choice. Analysis of the subgroup of mothers with surveyed accompanying adults found independent predictors of any breastfeeding include maternal intention to breastfeed ( OR = 23.68, 95% CI [1.48, 377.6]) and breastfeeding-supportive knowledge and attitudes of the mother ( OR = 2.71, 95% CI [1.36, 5.40]) and the accompanying adult ( OR = 2.78, 95% CI [1.17, 6.60]). The only independent predictor of exclusive breastfeeding was maternal intention to breastfeed ( OR = 7.64, 95% CI [2.22, 26.3]). The majority of mothers (91%) felt supported, regardless of presence or absence of an accompanying adult. Conclusion: These findings emphasize the importance of breastfeeding education for mothers and their support persons.

Abstract (sommario):
Parental support and conflictual relationships in a sample of 48 Black and White adolescent mothers between the ages of 14 and 19 were examined. Adolescent mothers were interviewed when their babies were 3 months old. Most adolescent mothers reported close relationships with both their mothers and fathers before and after the births of their babies. The perception of a supportive relationship with the mother after the birth of a baby increased more than the perception of a supportive relationship with the father. Perceptions of conflict were much higher, for mothers than for fathers, and less conflict with parents was reported by Black than by White adolescent mothers. Older White adolescent mothers rated their fathers as more supportive than did younger White mothers, but these differences did not exist among Black adolescent mothers. The effects of self-esteem and parental relationships on adolescent depressive symptomatology were also examined. Self-esteem and supportive relationships with fathers were both negatively associated with depressive symptomatology among adolescent mothers. These data highlight the need to consider multiple factors that contribute to the emotional adjustment and psychological well-being of adolescent mothers. Implications of findings for mental health service delivery are discussed In this article.

Abstract (sommario):
Objective: To evaluate the effect of peer support (mother-to-mother) on depressive symptomatology among mothers identified as high-risk for postpartum depression (PPD). Method: Forty-two mothers in British Columbia were identified as high-risk for PPD according to the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and randomly assigned to either a control group (that is, to standard community postpartum care) or an experimental group. The experimental group received standard care plus telephone-based peer support, initiated within 48 to 72 hours of randomization, from a mother who previously experienced PPD and attended a 4-hour training session. Research assistants blind to group allocation conducted follow-up assessments on diverse outcomes, including depressive symptomatology, at 4 and 8 weeks postrandomization. Results: Significant group differences were found in probable major depressive symptomatology (EPDS > 12) at the 4-week (χ2 = 5.18, df = 1; P = 0.02) and 8-week (χ2 = 6.37, df = 1; P = 0.01) assessments. Specifically, at the 4-week assessment 40.9% ( n = 9) of mothers in the control group scored > 12 on the EPDS, compared with only 10% ( n = 2) in the experimental group. Similar findings were found at the 8-week assessment, when 52.4% ( n = 11) of mothers in the control group scored > 12 on the EPDS, compared with 15% ( n = 3) of mothers in the experimental group. Of the 16 mothers in the experimental group who evaluated the intervention, 87.5% were satisfied with their peer-support experience. Conclusions: Telephone-based peer support may effectively decrease depressive symptomatology among new mothers. The high maternal satisfaction with, and acceptance of, the intervention suggests that a larger trial is feasible.

This study used a waiting-list control design to investigate the hypothesis that receiving service from Big Brothers/Big Sisters enhances a single mother's social adjustment and general well-being. Mothers who had children matched with a big brother or big sister were compared with mothers who were awaiting service. Mothers receiving service were significantly better on both dependent measures. Interview data supported Gottlieb's (1983) contention that family and friends are more important sources of social support than are professionals.

Abstract (sommario):
According to the intergenerational solidarity model, family members who share similar values about family obligations should have a closer relationship and support each other more than families with a lower value consensus. The present study first describes similarities and differences between two family generations (mothers and daughters) with respect to their adherence to family values and, second, examines patterns of relations between intergenerational consensus on family values, affectual solidarity, and functional solidarity in a sample of 51 mother-daughter dyads comprising N = 102 participants from Luxembourgish and Portuguese immigrant families living in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Results showed a small generation gap in values of hierarchical gender roles, but an acculturation gap was found in Portuguese mother-daughter dyads regarding obligations toward the family. A higher mother-daughter value consensus was related to higher affectual solidarity of daughters toward their mothers but not vice versa. Whereas affection and value consensus both predicted support provided by daughters to their mothers, affection mediated the relationship between consensual solidarity and received maternal support. With regard to mothers, only affection predicted provided support for daughters, whereas mothers’ perception of received support from their daughters was predicted by value consensus and, in the case of Luxembourgish mothers, by affection toward daughters.

Abstract (sommario):
The majority of previous studies focused on mothers’ distress and considered partner support from the father to the mother. The current research studies the level and the course of distress and partner support in new mothers and fathers during the transition to parenthood and tests the protective role of partner support against distress. Data were collected in a two-wave longitudinal design from 53 heterosexual couples. Mothers and fathers completed questionnaires at two measurement occasions, that is, in the third trimester of pregnancy and 3 months after childbirth. The results provided arguments in favor of a dyadic perspective on distress during the transition to parenthood. No difference was displayed between mothers and fathers before and after childbirth. The level of distress decreased in mothers and also in fathers but only for those whose partner’s distress also decreased. The importance of partner support against postpartum distress was highlighted for mothers and fathers.

Abstract (sommario):
To support mothers to breastfeed for recommended durations, information and support are needed from multiple sources. Our previous research indicated not all mothers in our community receive support, with mothers at greater risk of breastfeeding cessation (e.g., lower educational attainment, enrolled in Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children [WIC]), receiving supports at lower rates. In addition, receiving support was not always linked to breastfeeding outcomes. Building from these findings, the current report presents a case study of one community and calls for efforts to coordinate care across contexts. Perspectives are provided by lactation professionals in WIC and hospital settings. In addition, a mother who experienced inconsistencies in information and support when she encountered breastfeeding challenges discusses her experiences. Clinical implications are provided for coordinating care across community and healthcare contexts in our community and beyond.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractHealth care and health outcomes for adolescent mothers and their children may be a result of a complex interaction between socioeconomic, psychological, and familial factors. To examine a health professional perspective on the important issues in providing health care for adolescent mothers, transcripts of seventeen interviews with health professionals were analysed. Social support was considered an important aspect influencing the health of adolescent mothers and their children. This included family support, peer support and organisational support. Opportunities for health professionals to promote good social support for young mothers include role modelling supportive care and supporting adolescents' decision making, providing referrals to peer support groups, and understanding barriers to accessing organisational support. The best outcome for adolescent mothers is when their role as mother is supported by the family and wider support network.

Abstract (sommario):
We investigate whether the anticipated risks of increasing maternal work hours for mother–adolescent relationships differ across family structures: Do intensive mothering norms exacerbate these risks particularly for mothers in two-parent biological families or does their partners’ greater involvement significantly mitigate these risks? We predict mothers’ accessible time, engaged time, and the quality of their relationship with their adolescent children using the National Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. Although the association between mothers’ labor force participation and mothers’ accessible time is significantly weaker in stepfather families relative to two-parent biological families, family structure does not moderate the associations between mothers’ labor force participation and mother’s engaged time or the quality of her relationship with her adolescent. We conclude that mothers face strong normative pressure to privilege their relationship with their child even in the face of long work hours and weaker family support.

MOTHERS' INVOLVEMENT IN THEIR LEARNING DISABLED CHILDREN SCHOOLINGRasa Barkauskienė SummaryProblem: This study deals with mothers' involvement in their learning disabled children schooling defined as different mothers' activities: support for doing homework, negative control of homework, mother-child discussions about learning and school activities, child reinforcement for learning. Mothers' involvement in child's schooling is discussed in the light of family factors - mother's feelings and attitudes toward the child, child's "goodness of fit" to mother's expectations, mother's education level, family status and stressful life events - possibly related to particular forms of mothers' involvement. Sample: Experimental group consisted of 92 primary school children (8-11 years old) diagnosed as learning disabled and control group - 90 average achievers from the same classes as children from experimental group. Evaluation tools: Mothers' involvement with child?s learning was assessed via Mothers' Involvement in Child's Schooling Scale (constructed by author of article), mothers - feelings and attitudes toward the child - via Mothers - Feelings Scale (constructed by author of article), child's "goodness of fit" to mother's expectations - via technique recommended by Feagans and al. (1991). Data on family status, mother's education level and family stressful life events were gathered through family questionnaire made by author of article. Results: Results revealed that mothers of learning disabled children are more controlling as well as give more positive reinforcement and support for child's learning when compared to mothers of average achievers. Mothers of learning disabled children report higher degree of dissatisfaction with themselves as mothers as well as more negative feelings toward child. Mother's positive feelings toward child and child' high fit within mother's expectations positively correlated with child reinforcement, mother-child discussions about learning and school as well as with general level of mother's involvement in child's schooling. Negative control of homework was higher when child's fit within mother's expectations was low. Negative control had positive statistically significant correlation with mother's negative feelings toward child. Other family features such as stressful live events, family status is to be considered in the examination of mother's involvement with their learning disabled children schooling.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: Continuing breastfeeding after three months of the postpartum period has been a challenge to mothers rather than their choice. The engagement of husbands in breastfeeding serves both as physical and mental support to their wives. This study aimed to assess the breastfeeding self-efficacy of mothers, identify their husbands’ support for breastfeeding and examine the association between breastfeeding self-efficacy of mothers and the husbands’ support for breastfeeding. Methods: This descriptive, cross sectional study recruited 110 mothers of infants, visiting Bungmati Health Post for immunization from July 2015 to November 2015. Mothers were interviewed face to face with semi structured questionnaire. Data entry and analysis was carried out using SPSS version 23. Descriptive analysis was performed on the socio-demographic characteristics, delivery characteristics, breastfeeding self-efficacy and husbands’ support scale. Bivariate analysis was used to examine the association between breastfeeding self-efficacy and husbands’ support scale and other outcomes. Results: Majority (94%) of the mothers reported to be confident on the breastfeeding self-efficacy, while 95 percent of their husbands were supportive towards breastfeeding. A significant association was seen between the breastfeeding self-efficacy and the husbands’ support scale (p<0.04). Mothers who received support from husbands were 10 times more likely to report confidence on breastfeeding than those who did not. Conclusions: The results suggested that husbands’ support increases the breastfeeding self-efficacy of mothers. Based on this finding, it is recommended that involvement of husband is crucial for encouraging mother to breastfeed child. Tweetable Abstract: Mothers who received support from their husbands were 10 times significantly more likely to breastfeed.

Abstract (sommario):
Parenting styles and mother–child interaction were examined with 97 Mainland Chinese mothers (M age 1/4 29.64 years, SD 1/4 3.64) and their young children (M 1/4 24.30 months, SD 1/4 4.57). Mothers completed questionnaires about their parenting styles, orientation to Chinese cultural values, perceived parenting stress, and sources of social support. The regression analyses showed that mothers’ adherence to Chinese values was associated with both authoritative and authoritarian parenting styles. Other characteristics of the family contexts, such as perceived parenting distress, social support, and years of education, also contributed to Chinese mothers’ parenting styles. Mother–child dysfunctional interaction was associated with mothers’ heightened parenting distress, a lack of perceived social support, and perceptions of children's difficultness. Group comparisons revealed that Chinese mothers who had high scores for both authoritative and authoritarian parenting styles adhered most strongly to the Chinese cultural values. The findings suggest that the aspects of families’ eco-cultural settings such as mothers’ endorsement of Chinese cultural values and perceived parenting stress contribute to their parenting styles and interaction with their children.

Methods: The research method used an analytical survey type with a cross sectional approach to 75 breastfeeding mothers who had babies aged 7-24 months. Data analysis was performed by univariate analysis to obtain an overview of each independent and dependent variable. Data will be presented in the form of distribution, frequency and bivariate analysis to determine whether there is a relationship between independent variables (categorical) and independent variables (categorical) using Chi Square Test. Results: The results of the study obtained the frequency distribution of respondents with good knowledge 45 people (60%), less knowledge of 30 people (40%), family support 33 respondents (44%), family support 42 respondents (56%), ASI actions Exclusive 17 respondents (22.7%), did not provide exclusive breastfeeding 58 respondents (77.3%). There is no relationship between mother's knowledge of exclusive breastfeeding (p-value 0.063). There is no relationship between family support for exclusive breastfeeding p = 0.063 and p = 0.098 (α = 0.05) means that there is no relationship between knowledge and family support for mothers with exclusive breastfeeding. Conclusion: It is recommended to the community especially to mothers and families to increase exclusive breastfeeding so that the baby's needs for breastfeeding are met, and the family continues to provide support for the mother to give the baby exclusive breastfeeding, further researchers use different and varied variables and dig deeper into the mother's attitude towards exclusive breastfeeding with direct interviews with nursing mothers.

Abstract (sommario):
Men infected with HIV are often faced with caregiving responsibilities of aging, ill parents, while simultaneously looking for support from their parents in dealing with their own health problems. Unfortunately, the reciprocal roles of HIV-positive adult sons and aging mothers as caregivers have not been examined. To address this gap in the literature, HIV-positive men ( n = 118) answered open-ended questions about the support they exchanged with their mothers, completed the Depth of Relationships Inventory, and rated the importance of health-related assistance between themselves and their mothers. The men viewed themselves as important providers of both instrumental and emotional support to their mothers. Men perceived their mothers to be significant providers of emotional support but only moderately important in providing instrumental support. About a third of the men responded that the help they provided and received from the mothers in managing each other’s health and staying healthy was extremely important. Men regarded their relationships with their mothers as one of their most important social relationships. Non-White men rated the quality of their mother–son relationships more highly, exchanged more instrumental support, and provided more emotional support to their mothers than White men. Men who disclosed their HIV-positive status to their mothers rated the importance of the help they received from their mothers in managing their illnesses higher than men who had not disclosed.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: The benefits of breastfeeding are well established and for the most part it is rather beneficial for children to drink their mother's milk One of the most commonly cited benefits of breastfeeding is that it helps connect mothers and their children; the baby feels its mother's body warmth and heartbeat (reminiscent of the womb it has left) and can become familiar with its mother's smell. Studies have shown that babies who are breastfed are more likely to reach adulthood. Breast milk is the ideal food for the infant under any circumstance. Objective of present study was to assess the breast feeding and infant feeding practices among mothers of infants aged 0- 12 months. Methods: A Community based cross-sectional study among mothers of infants aged 0-12 months at field practice area of Narayana Medical College, Nellore. This Study was undertaken during March to May 2016. A sample size of 112 respondents were included in this study. Results: 112 mothers of infants aged 0-12 months were included in this study. The source of knowledge regarding breast feeding among these mothers was health personnel 60 (53.57%), Family members was the second most common source 35 (31.25%) fallowed by others 17 (15.18%).Conclusions: Family support and mother’s literacy play important role in promoting breast feeding among mothers. Health education given to mothers helps them to establish breast feeding and take care of their infants.

Abstract (sommario):
This study examines the processes by which mothers communicate with their hearing and deaf preschool children during a problem-solving task. Mothers and children from three matched groups—hearing mother-hearing child, hearing mother-deaf child, and deaf mother-deaf child—were videotaped while the mother taught the child to assemble a wooden pyramid. Hearing mothers of deaf children were less likely to adapt their interactional strategies to meet their children's communicative needs and achieve intersubjectivity than were the other mothers. Findings support Vygotsky's dialectical notion of cognitive development.

Abstract (sommario):
The availability of breastfeeding support resources, including those provided by Baby-Friendly Hospitals, International Board Certified Lactation Consultants, breastfeeding counselors and educators, and volunteer-based mother-to-mother support organizations, such as La Leche League, are critically important for influencing breastfeeding initiation and continuation for the mother-child dyad. In addition, the emergence of community support options via information and communication technologies such as Skype and Facetime, social media (e.g., Facebook), and telelactation providers are providing mothers with a new range of support options that can help bridge geographic barriers to traditional community support. However, telelactation services that use information and communication technologies to connect breastfeeding mothers to remotely located breastfeeding experts require reliable, affordable, high-quality broadband connections to facilitate interaction between mothers and their support resources. The purpose of this paper is to explore the complex spatial landscape of virtual and face-to-face breastfeeding support options for mothers in the state of Ohio (U.S.), identifying barriers to support. Using a range of spatial and network analytics, the results suggest that a divide is emerging. While urban areas in Ohio benefit from both a density of face-to-face breastfeeding support resources and robust broadband options for engaging in telelactation, many rural areas of the state are lacking access to both. Policy implications and several potential strategies for mitigating these inequities are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe experiences and needs of mothers who lose a newborn twin were explored by sending semistructured questionnaires to 14 bereaved mothers. All mothers continued to think of the surviving child as a twin. Six had feelings of resentment towards the survivor. All felt their loss had been underestimated. Support could be improved by acknowledging the mother's grief and encouraging her to talk about the dead baby. Zygosity should be determined and reminders, such as photographs (of the babies together) and ultrasound scans, provided. All parents should be offered counselling and the opportunity to meet similarly bereaved parents.

Abstract (sommario):
Mothers and fathers separately assessed grandparent support in family situations involving grandchildren with developmental disabilities. There was high consistency in mother and father independent views of grandparent support with the maternal grandmother identified by both as the most available and supportive. Grandparent emotional support appeared to be more salient to parent psychological adjustment and parenting stress than was grandparent instrumental support (practical help). Mothers and fathers appeared to be most sensitive to the support offered by their own mother. Overall family functioning was not directly related to level of grandparent emotional or instrument support. Findings encourage multigenerational interventions with parents and grandparents in family practice involving situations of childhood disability.

Abstract (sommario):
Background. Although the World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding for six months, the rate of breastfeeding has decreased worldwide. Breastfeeding is the natural way of feeding a baby, but it is a process that has to be learnt. It is not unusual for problems to occur and hence support for breastfeeding is vital. The aim of this study was to explore first-time mothers’ experiences of the breastfeeding support offered by pediatric nurses, as well as to develop and evaluate the Mother Perceived Support from Professionals (MoPPS) scale. Methods. A qualitative design involving both inductive and deductive approaches was chosen. Nine first-time mothers were interviewed regarding their experiences of the breastfeeding support offered by pediatric nurses. Semistructured interviews were conducted. The mothers were also asked to grade their experiences of breastfeeding support on the MoPPS scale. A qualitative content analysis was applied when analyzing the data obtained using both the inductive (interviews) and deductive (MoPPS scale) approaches. Results. The results revealed that the mothers felt the desire to breastfeed, although they all experienced some difficulties. They wanted the pediatric nurses to be perceptive and provide professional support based on their own experiences. When the pediatric nurses took time and booked extra appointments, the mothers felt supported. The inductive analysis resulted in one theme: “When wanting to breastfeed, mothers have a desire to be offered professional breastfeeding support”. Two main categories were identified, namely “Mothers wanted but lacked breastfeeding support” and “Mothers received professional support.” The deductive analysis of the MoPPS scale showed similar results, and the questions were perceived as relevant to the aim. The mothers considered it important that the pediatric nurses had sufficient knowledge about breastfeeding. It was also considered important that the pediatric nurses involved the mothers’ partners in the breastfeeding support. Therefore, we suggest that these areas should be included in the MoPPS scale for pediatric nurses. Conclusions. The MoPPS scale can be a useful tool for helping pediatric nurses to offer mothers professional breastfeeding support. Indeed, when offering breastfeeding support, pediatric nurses can use the items included on the MoPPS scale as guidance.

Abstract (sommario):
Breastfeeding for infants is the best way of feeding, especially for infants less than six months old. Exclusive breastfeeding for six months has been shown to have many benefits. Although the benefits of breastfeeding have been published around the world, exclusive breastfeeding coverage rates are still far from expected. For working mothers giving exclusive breastfeeding is not easy. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of knowledge and family support to exclusive breastfeeding for working mothers. This type of observational analytic study uses atime approach cross sectional. The sample in this study is mothers who have babies aged 6-24 months who work in government agencies in the Blora Regency. The sampling technique using total sampling, as many as 30 respondents. The level of mother's knowledge and family support was measured using a questionnaire. Test data analysis using the Chi-Square test. Based on the results of data analysis, there is no relationship between the level of knowledge with exclusive breastfeeding for working mothers (p = 0.675 0.05) and there is a relationship between family support and exclusive breastfeeding for working mothers (p = 0.001 0.05) . The conclusion of this study is that there is no relationship between the level of knowledge with exclusive breastfeeding for working mothers and there is a relationship between family support and exclusive breastfeeding for working mothers.
