Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Oil scavenge flow in aero-engine bearing chamber remains largely a challenging problem for many engine designers. Research campaign on scavenge flow has been conducted by G2TRC – Gas Turbine and Transmissions Research Centre (previously Rolls Royce University Technology Centre in Gas Turbine Transmission Systems) at the University of Nottingham. It was recognized that a deep sump performs better than shallower one due to its ability to “shield” the collected oil in the sump from the shaft windage thus reducing the amount of oil being picked up by the bulk air rotation. However, such a deep sump design cannot be employed in some engines and especially at certain locations where space is limited. A parametric study combined with phenomenological approach on shallow sump geometry has been conducted and presented in the previous publication where a certain optimized shallow sump variant was proposed depending on whether the flow in the chamber is wall film dominated or airborne droplets dominated. The parametric phenomenological approach was employed since it can be done relatively quicker than typical data gathering through an experiment. However the approach relies on qualitative interpretation of the flow features, and its application in bearing chamber flow research has never been validated before. This paper presents the results of quantitative measurements of residence volumes of an optimized shallow sump variant identified in the parametric phenomenological study. Comparison was then made with the residence volumes of some existing engine sumps. It was found that the optimized shallow sump for wall film dominated flow has lower residence volumes compared to some existing engine sumps. In some cases, the residence volume can be reduced by up to 75%. An optimized shallow sump variant for airborne droplets dominated was also identified in the previous parametric phenomenological study, although the residence volume measurement is yet to be conducted. The optimized shallow sump for wall film dominated flow was also identified as a good sump regardless of the flow regime. However when it was tested in airborne droplets dominated flow, its residence volumes are higher than some of the existing engine sumps. This highlights the importance of considering the flow regime in the bearing chamber in any attempt to optimize a sump geometry.

Abstract (sommario):
Domed suction entrapment covers (grates) are generally mounted on cylindrical sumps or frames (mud rings) that are permanently installed in the bottoms or sidewalls of swimming or wading pools. These covers constitute a first-line-of-defense against the danger of evisceration by preventing children from sealing the sumps and drains with their buttock. When the covers are missing, loose, or broken, sealing a sump with their backsides exposes their bowels to dangerous levels of suction that cause disembowelment in a fraction of a second. There is an emerging paradigm shift in the aquatic’s industry that calls for equivalent protection for covered and uncovered sumps and frames. Using a simple concept patented by Barnett (2001) [1], the planar circle formed by the inside edge of a sump is replaced by a non-planar edge, e.g., scalloped or castellated. Edge geometry is chosen that will not conform to human body parts to preclude sealing. Testing inexpensive prototypes demonstrated that the proposed anti-evisceration rings reduce the body removal force from 324 lb. to 10 to 17 lb. Further, they lower the maximum pump vacuum from −14.3 psi to −1 to −2 psi.

Abstract (sommario):
The containment sump, also known as emergency or recirculation sump, is part of the Emergency Core Cooling System (ECCS). Every nuclear power plant is required by regulations to have an ECCS to mitigate a design basis accident. The containment sump of a Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) collects reactor coolant and chemically reactive spray solutions following a Loss of Coolant Accident (LOCA). The containment sump serves as the water source to support long-term recirculation. This water source, the related pump inlets and the piping between the source and inlets are all important safety components. Suppression pools in Boiling Water Reactors (BWRs) serve the same purpose as PWR containment sumps. Historically, a passive debris screen has been used to prevent debris from entering the ECCS suction lines surrounding the containment sump. Previous incidents demonstrated that the potential for excessive head loss across the containment sump screens exists because of the accumulation of debris on the containment sump. Because of this, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has concluded that containment sump blockage is a potential concern for PWRs. US BWRs were required to conduct plant-specific evaluations of their suction strainer performance and, as required, modify their plant design. While all US PWRs are required to resolve this Generic Safety Issue (GSI-191), containment sump blockage continues to be a major concern for both BWRs and PWRs internationally. This paper describes the GE Active Strainer design, one of several strainers developed to resolve this generic safety issue. The Active Strainer presents an innovative and novel method of addressing containment sump blockage. This strainer employs a rotating, or “active”, plow and brush that sweep over a perforated surface. By keeping the perforated surface free of debris, fluid is allowed to pass through, providing sufficient coolant to the ECCS pumps to support long-term recirculation. Due to the unique method by which the Active Strainer filters coolant, a test program was developed to demonstrate its functionality and viability. Intrinsic differences between passive and active solutions make previous methods of testing obsolete for the GE Active Strainer. Moreover, the complex and varying geometries and conditions of actual plant containment sumps are difficult to replicate. Therefore, a methodology was developed to ensure prototypical test environment and strainer debris loads in a scaled test facility. This paper will discuss the GE Active Strainer design, the testing conducted and subsequent conclusions.

Abstract (sommario):
The inhabitants produce the sump waters and accumulate temporarily in the sumps. This is sewage that must be treated before it is discharged to surface waters. Slovak legislation does not allow the discharge of such waters into the soil. The possibilities of sump water treatment are given by the water management equipment of the given locality where sewage water is produced. The most common treatment method is transported at municipal wastewater treatment plants, which are, however, largely congested. In many cases, the sump water is no longer able to receive in WWTP. Another way is domestic wastewater treatment plants, and also they are wastewater treatment plants exclusively for sump waters. Sump waters have a predominantly high organic content and therefore their quality needs to be constantly monitored. The most important monitored characteristics of sump waters are COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) and BOD5 (Biological Oxygen Demand). The high concentration of these substances in the sump water can adversely affect the processes at the municipal wastewater treatment plant. Due to the rapid development of rural settlements without a functioning sewerage system, it is necessary to intensify or adapt the existing wastewater treatment plants. However, many engineers see the solution to this problem in the construction of separate wastewater treatment plants for sump waters.

Abstract (sommario):
A sump in the RPE circuit in the EDF - Nuclear Power Plant of Cruas-Meysse, showed an extremely high radiation dose rate since 2007. Different attempts to decontaminate the sump did not have the desired effect. The sump is a so-called “gatte” where two flows of different fluida circulates. A chemical flow transverses the sump within stainless steel piping, the second flow which is (contaminated) residual water, flows through this sump in contact with the sumps walls. The dose rate was estimated at 20 Sv/h, and it was presumed being a single hotspot in the dead zone of the sump, where no chemicals from the chemical decontamination attempts and no high pressure water contact had been possible, or had any effect. To protect the maintenance and exploitation people from the radiation, the sump had been protected with a physical protection system, named a sarcophagus. The client asked to leave this protection system, which was modular, on place during the dismantling works to assure its radiation protection function. The paper describes the remote controlled dismantling of the sump within the particular running conditions of the power plant, the developments made to the equipment, and the conditions in which the works had to be carried out. Some lessons learnt and particular points of attention are revealed to complete this paper.

Abstract (sommario):
Aero-engines incorporate various bearing chambers and these typically contain bearings, seals, rotating shafts, stationary walls and struts, and sometimes gears. Oil is supplied for lubrication and cooling and is removed (scavenged) from the sump region of the chamber (note that in some parts of the world the entire bearing chamber is referred to as the sump). Depending on the location and function of the bearing chamber, the sump region may be deep or shallow. Effective oil removal is essential as unnecessary working of the oil can lead to excessive heat generation and reduced overall efficiency. Therefore the design of the scavenge region in a bearing chamber, as well as the ability to assess its performance is very important. Previous work, much of which was conducted at the University of Nottingham Technology Centre in Gas Turbine Transmission Systems (UTC) suggests that oil often does not flow cleanly into the off-take due to a combination of several factors: oil momentum, windage, three-dimensional air flow that blocks the off-take flow or transports oil away from the off-take, and pooling because of separated air flow that acts on the oil once oil momentum is dissipated. Experimental research at the UTC found that scavenge performance is highly affected by the sump geometry, especially its depth. Variations of shallow sumps, although some are better than the others, cannot offer the same level of performance as a deep one. However space limitation in an engine often only allows for a shallow sump. This paper presents some experimental exploration on new design ideas. They are in the form of various inserts and attachments that were designed to improve scavenge performance of a shallow sump. These “custom” sumps were tested on the UTC’s scavenge test facility at various flow settings (wall film/flying droplets, liquid flow rates, scavenge ratios, shaft speeds). The residence volumes were measured and compared to a baseline configuration with reduction in residence volume desirable. The inserts tested were a Grille Cover, a Stepped Spillway, a Perforated Plate and a Porous Insert. Both the Porous Insert and the Perforated Plate showed reduced residence volumes in the demanding droplet/windage dominated flow condition with the Perforated Plate offering the best improvement over baseline.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract A new hot-salt pump has been developed for molten-salt solar power tower applications that will reduce the capital cost of the plant, eliminate many of the piping, valve and sump problems associated with the handling of molten salt and improve the reliability of a critical part of the operating system of the plant. Previous systems required that the pumps in these plants be housed in shallow sumps that were gravity fed by the storage tanks. This new pump arrangement will eliminate the sump-level control valves and the potential for overflowing the pump sump vessels. Until now only cantilever pumps were qualified for hot molten-salt service because no suitable bearing materials had been tested. This paper describes the successful qualification of a long-shafted pump with salt-lubricated bearings tested for over 5000 hours with nitrate salt at 565 °C.

Abstract (sommario):
An aero-engine bearing chamber is a structure that is used to contain and collect oil used in lubricating and cooling the bearings supporting the high-speed engine shafts. There are various bearings in an aero-engine. Within the bearing chambers, there are typically the bearings, rotating shafts, seals and gears (in some designs). The walls of the bearing chamber are stationary and there are vents and sumps to take out the oil, via an offtake pipe, and the sealing air. The oil collected via the sump and vents is recycled and used again in the loop. To prevent oil degradation and reduce chance of coking in the chamber, it is desired that all of the oil goes through the recycling loop, with no oil staying longer than necessary in the chamber. The sealing air is used to maintain a positive pressure to keep the oil within the chamber. The flow inside a bearing chamber is highly turbulent and consists of a rotating mixture of oil and air. A smaller amount of the oil, mostly as oil-droplets, exits at the vents and is separated from the air using de-aerators [1]. It is expected that by gravity, most of the oil collects at the sump and can be easily scavenged. This is provided the sump can be large enough. The geometry of a bearing chamber is, however, complex largely because of space limitations. It is very important that oil is not resident longer than necessary to prevent over-heating and therefore deterioration or coking. Experimental observations by Chandra & Simmons [2], have shown that bearing chambers with deep sumps perform better that those with shallow sumps. Since shallow sumps are inevitable, a number of innovative studies have been done to improve bearing chamber designs. The presence of air in the oil (e.g. as bubbles) reduces the efficiency of the scavenging pump. Other factors such as oil momentum and windage can take oil away from the off-take pipe potentially increasing oil residence volume. Chandra & Simmons [2] placed inserts such as grille cover, perforated plate, etc, on a side of the bearing wall and improvements in the residence volume were seen. In this work, we are looking at a detailed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of one of the inserts that performed well. This will aid understanding of the flow characteristics of using an insert to improve oil residence in a bearing chamber.

Abstract (sommario):
Vortex in pump station sumps could lead to equipment operation with vibration and cavitations, and its impact is even stronger in large scale pump station sumps. In this study, the flow structure and vortex behavior in the sumps of a large scale pump station were investigated with a three dimensional CFD approach. The approach solves Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations by the realizable k-ε turbulence model with wall function. The numerical simulations were carried out under three different water levels (low, standard and high) and three different pump operating combinations (operating with one, two or three pumps). The important flow feathers in the entire flow field such as submerged vortices, free-surface vortices were revealed. The strength and location of vortices under different operating conditions were presented. To reduce the vorticity magnitude in the sumps which would expand to affect the flow around pump inlet, effects of three different anti-vortex devices (DA, DB, and DC) for the pump station were also investigated numerically. It is found that the vortex attached to the floor has larger vorticity scale than that attached to side wall and back wall. The vorticity magnitude at higher sump water level is smaller than that at lower water level. The operation of multi pumps also has a strong impact to the flow patterns in sumps. Anti-vortex device DB has better performance than the two others, it decreases the floor attached and sidewall attached vortex and makes the pump inlet flow smooth.

Abstract (sommario):
The air entrainment in sumps (Pump Intake) is a commonly observed phenomenon at low water level and high Froude number corresponding to flow rates higher than the rated flow. The air entrainment initiates with the formation of small vortex like structure on the surface with its position varying in the vicinity of Pump intake portion. Normally it calls for two-phase flow analysis (and possibly transient also) to correctly predict the air entrainment phenomenon using computational fluid dynamics approach. We at CRED, Kirloskar Brothers Limited could predict the root cause for air entrainment by studying the vortex formation well within the flow. A single-phase steady state flow was analyzed. Two test cases were studied. IOWA University had published a sump case with results from computational fluid dynamics studies. The other case was the actual sump model study carried out using experimental setup wherein the air entrainment was observed. The paper presents the comparison of the predictions with results from these two test cases.

Kolb, Eugenia. Does the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) of the European Union guarantee successful citizen participation? Goethe-Universität, Institut für Humangeographie, marzo 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21248/gups.51592.

Abstract (sommario):
The Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) is a concept of the European Union. The non-binding guidelines formulated within this framework aim to help municipalities and cities to strategically define a local and long term transport and mobility plan. From the European Union's point of view, citizen participation plays a pivotal role during all phases – from the development of the plan until its implementation. This intends to achieve greater support and acceptance from the community for the plan, and to facilitate its implementation. This paper investigates whether the planning and political SUMP approach guarantees successful participatory processes, and what conclusions can be drawn to amend the SUMP process and general transport planning practice. It discusses how citizen participation is defined in the SUMP guidelines and how these elements are reflected in the SUMP guidelines of 2013 and 2019. In a second step, this paper shows how successful citizen participation is defined in an academic context and to what extent the SUMP reflects these findings. The findings derived from the academic context are then applied to the case studies of Ghent and Limburg in order to evaluate how successfully participation procedures were implemented in these SUMP processes. Finally, the question - what conclusions can be drawn from this to improve the SUMP process and general transport planning practice - is assessed.
