Középpontjában Georg Christoph Lichtenberg Fiziognómiáról a fiziognómusok ellenében című írása áll, de részletesen kitér néhány további kritikai szövegére, valamint Lavater, Mendelssohn, Lenz és Zimmermann ezekre érkezett bírálataira, reflexióira. Igyekszik bemutatni azokat a gondolati és koncepcionális különbségeket, amelyek e vita során körvonalazódtak Lavater és követői, valamint Lichtenberg között, továbbá érzékletessé tenni a kor vitakultúráját, hogy mindezek segítségével megrajzolja Lichtenberg talán leghíresebb, Töredék a farkakról című szatirikus „antifiziognómiájának” szellemtörténeti hátterét.

Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (17421799) was one of the most prominent Enlightenment figures in Germany - alongside with Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, Moses Mendelssohn, Immanuel Kant. During his lifetime he was best known as a professor of physics, popularizer of science, witty mind, and thought-provoking essayist. His enduring philosophical legacy is based on his posthumously published so-called wastebooks (rough notebooks) which gather together countless observations and remarks and which founded a tradition of aphoristic writing that was continued by the Schlegel brothers, Novalis, Schopenhauer, and especially Ludwig Wittgenstein. The characteristic feature of the aphoristic method is not to pointedly sum up or to cast a thought in a concise witty form. Instead, the aphorism provides a pregnant formulation that occasions a movement of thought. This paper picks up on extant characterizations of Lichtenbergs Sprachdenken (thinking of, by, and through language) and seeks to develop them further. The following movement of thought is occasioned by one of Lichtenbergs playful remarks which suggests the idea of a language in which any blunder in matters of truth would be a grammatical blunder as well.

This text was first published as ‘De nova methodo naturam ac motum fluidi electrici investigandi’ in Novi Commentarrii Societatis Regiae Scientiarum Gottingensis. Commentationes physicae et mathematicae classis 8 (Göttingen 1778: 168–80). It also appeared in a printing by Joann Christian Dieterich in Göttingen in 1778. Lichtenberg delivered this talk personally to the Royal Society of Sciences in Göttingen on 21 February 1778. Although Lichtenberg was not present, he had already informed the Royal Society of Lichtenberg’s discovery of the electrical figures at a meeting on 3 May 1777. The present German version was first published in Lichtenberg’s Vermischte Schriften, vol. 9 (Physikalische und mathematische Schriften, vol. 4) (Göttingen, 1806) pp. 49–80. Wolgang Promies suggests that the German translation was likely done by Friedrich Christian Kries, who was a co-editor of the Vermischte Schriften and Lichtenberg’s student (see Georg Christoph Lichtenberg [1974], Schriften und Briefe, [ed. Wolfgang Promies (K II: Kommentar zu Band III)], Munich: Carl Hanser Verlag, p. 11). Lichtenberg was the first to propose the use of + and – to designate electricity in this article.

En primer término, se aborda la relación asimétrica de humanidades y ciencias en las instituciones contemporáneas de conocimiento sugiriendo la inconveniencia de acentuar la diferencia entre unas y otras, en la medida en que ambos órdenes epistémicos están sometidos hoy a los mismos condicionamientos estructurales. El efecto que estos tienen sobre las humanidades es analizado a través de dos aspectos críticos. En segundo término, se discute la significación epistémica de la ocurrencia como principio común de ciencias y humanidades apelando a la obra de Georg Christoph Lichtenberg a manera de caso ejemplar. En esta, experimentalismo y ensayo, singularidades, ficción y variación dan cuenta de un mismo brote epistémico en humanidades (y literatura) y ciencias.

Body text: Typography and the corporeality of literature In one of his fragments, Georg Christoph Lichtenberg explains that German books printed with roman type, instead of the then default gothic type, always give him a feeling that he needs to translate them – evidence, he says, of “the degree to which our concepts are dependent on these signs”. The article elaborates on this thought. It explores the relation between literature, text (abstract and material), and typography, and argues – by means of bibliographical theory, Goethe’s mother, Jean-Luc Nancy, Roman Ingarden, and a diagnostic comparison between hand writing and digital fonts – that the longstanding, idealistic view, within literary criticism and history, of texts’ ‘content’ as independent of books’ and texts’ materiality and form, obstructs scholars’ striving for understand-ing. Text is not only representation; it is also presentation. Text has form, and the form produces meaning.

This history of the concept of fact reveals that the fact-oriented practices of German physicists and historians derived from common origins. The concept of fact became part of the German language remarkably late. It gained momentum only toward the end of the eighteenth century. I show that the concept of fact emerged as part of a historical knowledge tradition, which comprised both human and natural empirical study. Around 1800, parts of this tradition, including the concept of fact, were integrated into the epistemological basis of several emerging disciplines, including physics and historiography. During this process of discipline formation, the concept of fact remained fluid. I reveal this fluidity by unearthing different interpretations and roles of facts in different German contexts around 1800. I demonstrate how a fact-based epistemology emerged at the University of Göttingen in the late eighteenth century, by focusing on universal historian August Ludwig Schlözer and the experimentalist Georg Christoph Lichtenberg. In a time of scientific and political revolutions, they regarded facts as eternal knowledge, contrasting them with short-lived theories and speculations. Remarkably, Schlözer and Lichtenberg construed facts as the basis of Wissenschaft, but not as Wissenschaft itself. Only after 1800, empirically minded German physicists and historians granted facts self-contained value. As physics and historiography became institutionalized at German universities, the concept of fact acquired different interpretations in different disciplinary settings. These related to fact-oriented research practices, such as precision measurement in physics and source criticism in historiography.

Müβten wir im Blick auf unsere Disziplin nicht erst recht formulieren: Ein Neutestamentler, der nur etwas vom Neuen Testament versteht,kanndieses gar nicht richtig verstehen? Ist doch der Gegenstand der neutestamentlichen Wissenschaft – zumindest wenn wir äβerlich gesehen von der Bezeichnung ausgehen – in der Gestalt des Nestle-Aland 26. A. nur ein einziges griechisches Buch im Kleinformat von jetzt 680 Seiten, der alte Nestle 25. A. hatte gar nur 657 aufgrund seines kleineren textkritischen Apparats. Nach Morgenthaler2umfaβt es 137490 Worte. Allein dieses Manuskript hat 14514. Unter den theologischen wie den geisteswissenschaftlichen Disziplinen, die mit eigenen Lehrstühlen versehen an den Universitäten gelehrt werden, hat das Fach ‘Neues Testament’ gewiβ den am starksten begrenzten Gegenstand. Man vergleiche nur die Nachbardisziplin, die Kirchengeschichte: Der ganze Migne mit 378, die Weimarana mit 100 und das Corpus Reformatorum mit 101 Bänden, dazu zahllose andere Quellen, stehen diesem einen, kleinen Buch gegenüber.

Abstract This article analyzes the significance of cyclical forms in the art of Hanne Darboven by reexamining the place of Constructivism and capitalism in her work. It tracks the lasting importance of El Lissitzky for her understanding of the relation between art and mathematics, revealing how Darboven borrowed from Lissitzky a particular interest in oscillatory dynamics. Further, it establishes the influence on Darboven's artistic practice of Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, particularly his method of note-taking—derived from accountants' ledgers—called sudeln. While sudeln works exhibit the oscillatory dynamics described by Lissitzky, they also offers a language for the vast array of citations that Darboven inscribed in her art. The concept of sudeln thus provides a framework for understanding the self-organizing and autopoietic operations that underwrite the paper machines of Darboven's practice. The article concludes by locating this same cyclical, oscillatory form in the most fundamental and abstract of Darboven's gestures, the wavy script that she called Schriftschwünge. In doing so, the article discovers an unexpected emergence of the biographical in Darboven's artworks, notebooks, and letters, in contrast to the anonymous and depersonalized aesthetic with which she is often associated.

Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742–1799), der in Göttingen mit großem Erfolg sein Hauptkolleg über ,Physica experimentalis‘ abhielt, und Johann Gottlob Krüger (1715–1759), einer der bekanntester Mediziner seiner Zeit, der als Professor der ,Weltweisheit und Arzneygelahrtheit‘ zunächst an der Universität Halle wirkte und 1754 einen umfangreichen Band Träume veröffentlichte, gelten heutzutage zu Recht als die Autoren, die ,,besonders deutlich die Personalunion von Experimentator und ,Traum‘-Dichter verkörpern“.1 Die Wiederentdeckung der bis 1988 ,,so gut wie unbekannten“ Träume Krügers, einer ,,hochinteressante[n] Randgattung der aufgeklärten Kleinprosa“, verdankt sich dabei laut Wolfgang Riedels maßgeblicher Bilanz Anthropologie und Literatur in der deutschen Spätaufklärung2 einem Aufsatz von Wolfram Mauser, der in Germanistik aus interkultureller Perspektive erschienen ist. Der Publikationsort ist bezeichnend, ebenso die minder bekannte Tatsache, dass Mauser auf den Resultaten der französischgeschriebenen Dissertation von Gonthier-Louis Fink, Naissance et apogée du conte merveilleux en Allemagne (1740–1800), aufbaut. Dieser Umstand soll einleitend erwähnt werden, weil er als Plädoyer für die Bestrebungen des Jahrbuchs gedacht ist, dem der Jubilar sich immer selbstlos gewidmet hat: Nur eine sich als international verstehende Germanistik kann zum Abbau der nicht zuletzt sprachlichen Barrieren beitragen, die im Forschungsbereich ,Traum und Aufklärung/Sogno e scienza‘3 besonders gravierend sind.

Nach den Fachkonferenzen in Leipzig (1992), Heidelberg (1997), Osnabrück (1998) und Wuppertal (2001) fand im Februar 2005 die fünfte Tagung in Boldern bei Zürich und damit erstmals außerhalb Deutschlands statt. Etwa 90 TeilnehmerInnen aus 15 Ländern waren der Einladung von Christa Dürscheid (Zürich) gefolgt, „neue Blicke durch alte Löcher“ und „neue Blicke durch neue Löcher“ zu werfen, wie es in ihrem Eröffnungsvortrag in Anlehnung an Georg Christoph Lichtenberg hieß. Neben aktuellen Ergebnissen standen also auch alte, ungelöste Grundsatzfragen der Forschung (Welchen ontologischen Status räumt man „Jugendsprache“ ein? Ist sie eine Varietät, ein Stil, ein Register? Ist „Jugend“ eher eine soziale oder eher eine biologische Kategorie? u. a.) auf dem Programm.

Abstract (sommario):

Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) was a man of literature, and his cast of mind was not scientific. However, he cultivated the friendship of several leading British and German men of science, and could almost be called one of the scientific community. Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (F.R.S., 1793), renowned as satirist and aphorist, was Professor of Natural Philosophy in Göttingen, and a leading German authority in astronomy and physics, as well as in a number of newly emerging sciences, such as chemistry, geodesy, geophysics, meteorology and statistics. He was also the foremost German anglophile during the last decades of the Enlightenment, disseminating English culture and discoveries in the popular Göttingen Pocket Calendar that he edited from 1777 to 1799, and using his Commentaries (1794-99) to Hogarth’s prints as a teaching aid for English life, literature and art. Repeatedly, but without providing details, he referred to his contacts and sources of information in England, yet so far no relevant correspondence has been found, and we are left with only indirect evidence of these, such as the last letter to reach Lichtenberg, sent on 19 February 1799 by Carl Christian von Hinliber, a distinguished member of a Hanover family with close links to the English court and the University of Göttingen. It concerned Coleridge’s wish to be introduced to Lichtenberg as soon as possible after his arrival in Göttingen, and commended the young poet as remarkably well qualified for a course in natural philosophy. As Lichtenberg was terminally ill and no longer able to respond, the note has received attention mainly for the eerie significance of the sender’s name; for hinüber , meaning across or beyond, serves as euphemism for death and dying. But the short communication is also indicative of Coleridge’s scientific interests and background knowledge at the time soon after the first edition of the Lyrical Ballads (1798) had been published.
