Abstract (sommario):
Translation is an important communication skill between different languages. In modern society, audiovisualproducts are distributed to worldwide areas as a popular means of mass media. As the globalization of economy and culture is advancing in the new century, audiovisual subtitle translation plays an increasingly important part. Good subtitles can enhance the audience’s experience of appreciating foreign films and make cultural communication more effective. This thesis conducts a brief survey on the strategies for film subtitle translation using the case study of the famous film The Shawshank Redemption. In this paper, based on Skopos theory, the author made a comprehensive analysis of subtitling activities and pointed out that subtitling, as a specialized area of translation, is not only guided by translation studies but also under the constraints of film properties. The Skopos theory of film subtitle translation is to provide, within the constraints of time and space, a well-translated subtitle that can contribute to a good understanding of what is happening on the screen. In short, the end justifies the means. Therefore, during the process of subtitle translation, the subtitler should take all the factors into consideration to identify the translation purpose, and then adopt corresponding translationstrategies. From this perspective, the author takes the Skopos theory as instruction and applies the reduction and addition method to analyze the film subtitle translation. In the age of globalization, foreign films are increasingly entering people’s lives. Watching foreign films is a popular and effective way to understand foreign cultures. However, in China, subtitle translation has not attracted as much academic attention as it deserves and few theories could be appropriately applied to subtitle translation. Therefore, the author hopes that subtitle translation could be paid more attention in terms of crosscultural communication.

Abstract (sommario):
<em>The objectives of this study are (1) to classify the translation techniques used between subtitles and dubbing (2) to identify the quality of the accuracy instrument between subtitles and dubbing (3) to compare the quality of the accuracy instrument that is more accurate to use. The source data is a movie that is limited to the translated utterances that have different translations in subtitle and dubbing versions. This study used a qualitative method with the following steps; (1) Classifying the translation techniques of subtitle and dubbing data based on Molina and Albir’s (2002) classification. (2) Tabulating the comparison of translation techniques between subtitles and dubbing. (3) Identifying the translation quality of accuracy based on the theory of Nababan et al., (4) Drawing conclusions. As a result, both subtitle and dubbing mostly used the established equivalent technique. An established equivalent has a good effect on the quality of accuracy obtained. This technique makes it easier for the audience to understand because it prioritizes the prevalence and naturalness so that the message from SL is conveyed properly. The researcher discovered that dubbing translation is more accurate than subtitle translation. Some subtitle translations are still considered less accurate. The researchers concluded that subtitles are appropriate for adolescents or adults, particularly foreign language learners. Language learners can broaden their knowledge of the language by watching films with subtitles. Meanwhile, dubbing is more appropriate for younger audiences because the language used is typically simpler to comprehend and does not contain swear words or inappropriate words.</em>

Abstract (sommario):
Movies are carriers of culture and have become an indispensable means of cultural dissemination in today's society. The demand for subtitle translation is also constantly increasing. Subtitle translation in films is constrained by time, space, and culture; therefore, subtitles should be concise and easy to understand. This article analyzed and evaluated the subtitle translation of the Chinese film "Chang 'an" based on three rules of Skopos theory: skopos rules, intratextual coherence and fidelity rule. The translation purpose of the translator is to help the audience have a better viewing experience and accurately convey the information of Chinese subtitles through a concise English translation. When translating Chinese to English subtitles, translators should omit repetitive or plot-irrelevant information, add conjunctions to make the translation smooth and coherent and transform cultural differences.

Abstract (sommario):
This study examines how subtitlers in underground subtitle groups in China perform skills and display competence in applying the rules around which annotations are built. I argue that by annotating, the act of creating notes, representing information not linguistically coded in the original US TV programs, subtitlers engage in a performative act in concert. Annotations reveal not only subtitlers’ stances toward the contents being translated, but also their metathinking on these contents. The analysis shows that two contradictory forces provide the impetus for annotations. On the one hand, the desire for objectivity refers to subtitlers’ attempts to represent a professional and organized account of how Chinese subtitles are produced in the process of explicating knowledge. On the other hand, the desire for authenticity is implicit in the subtitlers’ narrative of what they actually experience when translating US TV programs.

Abstract (sommario):
The focus of this research is to analyze the subtitle of 2 types of figurative languages; personification and simile, taken from the Anna Karenina movie directed by Joe Wright. This research aims to reveal the types of subtitle strategies applied to translate personification and simile found in the movie. The researcher uses qualitative method and document analysis to explain and describe the data. To analyze personification and simile, the researcher uses the theory of personification and simile proposed by Perrine (1997). Meanwhile, the researcher uses the theory of subtitle strategies proposed by Gottlieb (1992) to analyze the subtitle strategies. The researcher finds that there are 2 data classified as personification and 5 data classified as simile. However, there are 3 of 10 strategies applied to translate personification and simile, those are transfer, decimation and deletion. The result of this research indicates that the most used of the subtitle strategy is transfer. By using transfer strategy, all of the messages in the subtitles are delivered well because there is one on one equivalent in SL and TL.

Abstract (sommario):
As film-making has evolved, subtitling has become “a translation practice that consists of presenting a written text, generally on the lower part of the screen”, which seeks to deliver “the original dialogue of the speakers” (Diaz-Cintas and Remael 2007: 8). Subtitle translation in the field of Audiovisual Translation has attracted increasing interest from scholars, who believe that the quality of subtitling is an important criterion when evaluating the quality of a film. Inspired by Even-Zohar’s (1978) polysystem theory and Gottlieb’s (1992) typology, this comparative study focuses on the subtitling of English-language animation films, which represent one of the main foreign film genres introduced to Chinese audiences, in order to identify effective strategies to improve the quality of translated subtitles from the perspective of cultural awareness. I propose three main hypotheses in this research: 1) that the length of a film subtitle translated into Chinese is generally greater than the corresponding original English text; 2) that effective translation is contingent on the use of Chinese idioms and traditional expressions within translated subtitles; 3) that effective translation is contingent on the use of popular expressions within contemporary Chinese culture. The methodologies employed to address these hypotheses are: a self-built parallel corpus (as the main research tool) comprising 15 sets of animation film subtitles; a questionnaire survey; and interviews with relevant AVT practitioners and scholars. The research findings are: 1) the length of a film subtitle translated into Chinese is generally greater than the corresponding original English text; 2) the two discussed types of expression are effectively employed in the data; 3) unnecessary, erroneous or inappropriate uses, among others, were highlighted by the data; 4) the frequency of using popular expressions is higher than for traditional expressions; 5) there is frequent use of the typology strategies of paraphrase, transfer, condensation and transcription, as well as newer strategies of globalization and localization.

Abstract (sommario):
The area of audiovisual translation indisputably awakens a growing interest amongst scholars. However, the study of the translation of songs in an audiovisual context (AVC) has not been thoroughly explored. The purpose of this research is to offer a descriptive analysis on the area of translating songs (from English into Spanish) in an AVC. In particular, the research focuses on the translation of the songs included in nine animated Disney films from the Disney Renaissance Period (1989-1999). The study assesses how non-linguistic elements such as rhyme, rhythm, images or lip synchrony affect the task of translating songs by observing specific practical examples. Both subtitling and dubbing are analysed as translation practices. The different constraints involving each form of translation are assessed. Furthermore, the thesis offers a descriptive analysis of strategies used in the translation of songs in AVCs. This study highlights the importance of assessing the impact of non-linguistic elements in future studies on the translation of vocal music in AVCs and aims to provide a model for the contrastive analysis of song lyrics between the ST and the TT.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis examines the subtitling of films depicting the French banlieue into English. The banlieues are housing estates situated on the outskirts of large towns and cities, and are primarily home to the underprivileged, and immigrants to France or their descendants. The sociolect spoken in the banlieue differs from standard French in terms of grammar, lexicon and pronunciation. Three films released between 2000 and the present day are studied; La squale (Genestal, 2000), L'esquive (Kechiche, 2003) and Divines (Benyamina, 2016). A new integrated methodology is developed, which examines the films within their broader contexts of release, and in light of paratextual material contributing to the context of reception, and to the viewer's understanding of the topic at hand. Directors representing the banlieue on screen generally do so with a view to provoking thought or public discussion in relation to the banlieues. In addition to macro- and micro-contextual analysis of the films and subtitles, the work is underpinned by an examination of the subtitling situation, encompassing the views and experiences of subtitlers working on banlieue film, and technical analysis of the subtitles in terms of readability. Through interviews of professional subtitlers, and close technical analysis of the subtitles, this research is contextualised within the industry, and within current conventions and guidelines. Close analysis of subtitles and the translation solutions they present reveals that some of the socio-political messages presented in the films may not be evident to a non-French speaking viewer of the English-subtitled versions. Although the informal nature of many conversations featuring the langage de banlieue is sometimes clear in the subtitled version, the unique sociolect of the characters is not. In two of the case study films, a dialect-for-dialect approach was adopted, where African American vernacular English was used in the subtitles to demonstrate the use of non-standard language. However, it is argued that ultimately, this dialect-for-dialect approach, combined with cultural similarities between the French banlieue and American street culture, could lead the British Anglophone viewer to negotiate the banlieues and those who live there via their knowledge of American street culture. This could contribute to American cultural hegemony, and does not convey the specificity of France's banlieues as cultural melting pots.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this thesis is to explore how the approaches identified for the translation of Taiwanese Mandarin dialogues into English subtitles is different from those described in research studies which examined the translation of English film dialogues into Mandarin subtitles using data gathered from a Taiwanese movie entitled Cape No. 7. Taiwanese Mandarin is significantly influenced by the Tai-yu dialect, and in order to carry out the translation of Taiwanese Mandarin, it is important to deal with the functions of the dialect and related culture-specific items (CSIs). Therefore, the researcher of this thesis has investigated whether the translator of Cape No. 7 successfully applied a variety of translation strategies and prioritized the translation criteria well, to enable the target audience to receive the same message of the film as the source audience, especially when subtitling is constrained by time and space. There are two research areas which have been examined: slang and humour. The data analysis of slang scenes included Tai-yu slang and swearing, while humorous scenes were divided into three areas: puns, irony and metaphor. The research data have been analysed by means of analysis diagrams, which were trialled in a pilot study, described in Chapter Three. The pilot study lead to a new categorization based on previous researchers’ taxonomies (Aixelá, 1996; Davies, 2003; Tveit and Fong 2005, as cited in Yang, 2006), and this was applied to the analysis diagrams. According to the findings from the analysis chapters (Chapter Four & Five), the translator of Cape No. 7 preferred to use mostly the paraphrasing strategy in translating Tai-yu slang and humour, and the synonymy strategy in conveying swearing. In addition, the translator often strengthened swear words rather than toning them down in the English subtitles. However, when subtitling humorous scenes, the translator preferred to incorporate two strategies to deal with the cultural barriers when conveying the humorous effect. The compensation strategy was not used often in slang translation. In regard to the translation criteria, pragmatics and accuracy appeared to have been deemed more important by the translator than other criteria. Surprisingly functional equivalence did not seem to have been the translator’s first priority, as suggested by earlier research. Overall, this research study appeared to show that the translator of Cape No. 7 considered the paraphrase strategy to be the most efficient strategy for maintaining CSIs, and that pragmatics and accuracy were the translator’s most important criteria, which differs from the findings of previous research studies.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of the study is to apply a paratext analysis to investigate what it is in thepackaging of books that can appear attractive to children and what are the distinctiveshared features of popular pupil choices among books. The analysis consists of anexamination of each book and then a comparative section. The analytical categories arethe title and subtitle, author’s name, publisher’s information, cover pictures, the backcover, the spine, the format of the book, endpapers, and the series emblem. Thetheoretical premises are hermeneutics and semiotic interpretations of signs. The studyproceeds from Genette’s concepts of paratext, peritext and epitext. A prominent common feature of the books was series emblems in the form ofmain titles and colours. Another significant conclusion is that the cover often depictssome climactic event in the content of the book. The content and the cover mustharmonize so that the reader will not feel disappointed. The didactic conclusions are thatteachers must have a good understanding of the effect a book cover can have on pupils.Often teachers try to motivate pupils by telling them about the exciting content, but ifthe pupil is not motivated by the paratext, the threshold will be too high. It is of greatrelevance that teachers offer pupils several different books with varying paratexts.

Abstract (sommario):
Within the dynamic landscape of television content, the critical need to automate the indexing and organization of archives has emerged as a paramount objective. In response, this research explores the use of deep learning techniques to automate the extraction of diverse metadata from television archives, improving their accessibility and reuse. The first contribution of this research revolves around the classification of camera motion types. This is a crucial aspect of content indexing as it allows for efficient categorization and retrieval of video content based on the visual dynamics it exhibits. The novel approach proposed employs 3D convolutional neural networks with residual blocks, a technique inspired by action recognition methods. A semi-automatic approach for constructing a reliable camera motion dataset from publicly available videos is also presented, minimizing the need for manual intervention. Additionally, the creation of a challenging evaluation dataset, comprising real-life videos shot with professional cameras at varying resolutions, underlines the robustness and generalization power of the proposed technique, achieving an average accuracy rate of 94%.The second contribution centers on the demanding task of Video Question Answering. In this context, we explore the effectiveness of attention-based transformers for facilitating grounded multimodal learning. The challenge here lies in bridging the gap between the visual and textual modalities and mitigating the quadratic complexity of transformer models. To address these issues, a novel framework is introduced, which incorporates a lightweight transformer and a cross-modality module. This module leverages cross-correlation to enable reciprocal learning between text-conditioned visual features and video-conditioned textual features. Furthermore, an adversarial testing scenario with rephrased questions highlights the model's robustness and real-world applicability. Experimental results on benchmark datasets, such as MSVD-QA and MSRVTT-QA, validate the proposed methodology, with an average accuracy of 45% and 42%, respectively, which represents notable improvements over existing approaches. The third contribution of this research addresses the multimodal video captioning problem, a critical aspect of content indexing. The introduced framework incorporates a modality-attention module that captures the intricate relationships between visual and textual data using cross-correlation. Moreover, the integration of temporal attention enhances the model's ability to produce meaningful captions, considering the temporal dynamics of video content. Our work also incorporates an auxiliary task employing a contrastive loss function, which promotes model generalization and a deeper understanding of inter-modal relationships and underlying semantics. The utilization of a transformer architecture for encoding and decoding significantly enhances the model's capacity to capture interdependencies between text and video data. The research validates the proposed methodology through rigorous evaluation on the MSRVTT benchmark, viachieving BLEU4, ROUGE, and METEOR scores of 0.4408, 0.6291 and 0.3082, respectively. In comparison to state-of-the-art methods, this approach consistently outperforms, with performance gains ranging from 1.21% to 1.52% across the three metrics considered. In conclusion, this manuscript offers a holistic exploration of deep learning-based techniques to automate television content indexing, addressing the labor-intensive and time-consuming nature of manual indexing. The contributions encompass camera motion type classification, VideoQA, and multimodal video captioning, collectively advancing the state of the art and providing valuable insights for researchers in the field. These findings not only have practical applications for content retrieval and indexing but also contribute to the broader advancement of deep learning methodologies in the multimodal context

Abstract (sommario):
This study is an analysis of the process of creating subtitles for the National Geographic documentary Fight Science: Mixed Martial Arts. The difficulties encountered during this project have included the translation of subject-specific terminology, the handling of source-text mistakes and the process of deciding how to condense the spoken dialogue when writing the subtitles. By studying these issues, certain conclusion can be drawn about the difficulties encountered when creating subtitles and translating texts with subject-specific terminology. The study is primarily based on the theories of Runo Ingo (2007), Vinay & Darbelnet (1977) and Chesterman & Wagner (2002). To find appropriate translations for subject-specific terminology, it is important to understand which translation device should be used (for example a loan or literal translation) through the examination of parallel texts and it is important that the translator be familiar with this terminology. How to properly handle mistakes in the source material depends greatly on the situation, the text concerned and the translator’s judgment. Decisions about which information can be omitted can be based on the information’s importance to the overall understanding of the show or the implicit nature of the information. The science of translation can be considered vague, but there exist theories and principles to aid translators when making such touch decisions as those encountered during this project.

Abstract (sommario):
Although Audiovisual Translation (AVT) studies have proliferated in the past two decades, studies that tackle AVT in Arabic are still in their early stages. More specifically, very few studies investigate subtitling as a norm-governed, micro-level process that reflects macro-level, socio-cultural structures. Therefore, this thesis investigates the subtitling of racial slurs from English to Arabic by utilising the principles of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS). It seeks to identify the main subtitling strategies that Arab subtitlers use to translate racial slurs in English-language films into Arabic and the ideological underpinnings behind those strategies. Racial slurs are seen as aspects of lingua-culture; their occurrence represents the ideologies of race and racism that operate within a given socio-culture. This study shows that racial slurs serve as tools for characterisation through stereotyping. Moreover, the study demonstrates how racial slurs are a manifestation of the audience design involved in producing a film’s script. A dataset that consists of 556 racial slurs found in 102 films which were recorded from Arab satellite channels is compiled. The study identifies transfer, decimation, imitation, resignation, and omission as the main strategies that Arab subtitlers use in translating racial slurs. After the main subtitling strategies have been identified, the dataset is approached from the angle of racial categories targeted by racial slurs. This approach forms the basis of the in-depth, qualitative analysis of several representative scenes from the films under investigation. First, the analysis focuses on racial slurs targeting Blacks, which are the most recurring in the dataset. Then I analyse the sporadic racial categories of Whites, Asians, Latinos, and Jews. Finally, I focus on racial slurs that target Arabs and Muslims, as these groups represent the members of the audience in the Arab socio-culture. The analysis shows that the subtitling strategy of transfer is more prone to be used with racial slurs that have readily available equivalents in Arabic, such as those that target Blacks and Jews. Reduction strategies are used more frequently with sporadic racial categories and with those categories in which finding an equivalent in Arabic poses a challenge. I argue that the subtitling of racial slurs represents a process in which slurs are entextualised from their original contexts and their linguistic and lingua-cultural layers thereby altered. This process serves as an index of the different ideologies of racism that exist in Western and Arab socio-cultural contexts. It also manifests the role of patronage in controlling the subtitling industry and the subtitled product that reaches Arab audiences. It can be suggested that Arab subtitlers tend to apply domestication as a governing norm in the subtitling of racial slurs, as the acceptability of the subtitled text for the Arab audience seems to be the main priority for subtitlers.

Abstract (sommario):
High-content screening has experienced a significant growth since the mid-2000s. This technology is of primary interest to the pharmaceutical industry as it allows in principle the discovery of therapeutic molecules for diseases whose molecular pathways are poorly identified. Until now, a measurable cell phenotype must first be identified in order to evaluate the effect of a compound library on it. From an image analysis point of view, treated cells are automatically detected in hundreds of thousands of images and measurements of descriptors allow to finely differentiate effective treatments from a negative control. In collaboration with the companies Ksilink and Sanofi, we have been confronted with a new type of high-content screen to identify compounds effective against Parkinson's disease. This one, presenting images of neurons, made analysis dependent on robust cell segmentation obsolete. In addition, using cell differentiation and genome editing techniques, the controls of the cell model are two neuron cultures, isogenic but for one mutation: the GS2019 mutation that induces the disease. Nevertheless, the heterogeneity of these complex cells and the fine differences between the two isogenic lines do not allow the human eye to identify two distinct phenotypes. In order to allow the automatic detection of differences between phenotypes, we have proposed to use deep learning approaches. This work was mainly divided into two steps. The first step consisted in identifying a network architecture capable of classifying neural images. We learned that neuron cultures show phenotype differences in a very heterogeneous and therefore not systematic way. The second step consisted in proposing methods to explain and interpret subtle differences in phenotype, to ensure that the screening is performed on the basis of a proven difference between phenotypes and not on the basis of a technical bias. Based on the premise that differences between neuronal phenotypes are difficult to visually apprehend between two different images due to the high natural variability of neurons, we propose the idea that transforming the same image from one phenotype to another may represent an interesting approach. Indeed, we show that it is possible to train antagonistic networks to transform an image of a neuron that does not carry the mutation into a neuron that carries it and vice versa. In this way, we have been able to highlight potential assay biases but also what we believe to be true morphological differences related to the pathological mutation that were previously invisible

Abstract (sommario):
This book seeks to understand cinema as a form of soft-power tool. It proposes Taiwan as a prime example of cinema’s effect in assisting a small nation gain prominence on the international stage. It maps Taiwan’s cinematic output in the twenty-first century through the three keywords in the book’s subtitle—authorship, transnationality, historiography. Its object of analysis is the legacy of Taiwan New Cinema, a movement that began in the early 1980s and has had a lasting impact upon filmmakers and cinephiles worldwide for nearly 40 years. By examining case studies that include Hou Hsiao-hsien, Ang Lee, and Tsai Ming-liang, this book suggests that authorship is central to Taiwan cinema’s ability to transcend borders to the extent that the historiographical writing of Taiwan cinema has to be reimagined. It also looks at the scaling down of soft power from the global to the regional via a cultural imaginary called “little freshness,” which describes films and cultural products from Taiwan that have become hugely popular in China and Hong Kong. In presenting Taiwan cinema’s significance as a case of a small nation with enormous soft power, this book hopes to recast the terms and stakes of both cinema studies and soft power studies in academia.

Abstract (sommario):
There are two notable discrepancies in The Anarchical Society: Bull claims that he does not canvass any solution to the problems that humankind faces, yet this is precisely what he does; and contrary to what the book’s subtitle, A Study of Order in World Politics, signifies in his own conceptual vocabulary, and to how he thinks the ‘world political system’ should be studied, the book remains almost exclusively a much more narrowly focused study of international order in the contemporary global ‘international system’. This chapter first analyses the key moves of the book’s argument step by step. It then investigates in detail the underlying sources of the two discrepancies in Bull’s argument to obtain a deeper understanding of his thought structures. A brief concluding section outlines what could fruitfully be done by others to make further contributions to a study of order, and other related goals, in contemporary world politics.

Abstract (sommario):
This collective work contains fourteen scientific contributions related to Translation and Interpretation in Sub-Saharan Africa. The subtitle ‘The New Challenges in a Multilingual Space’ is at the heart of the concerns of the authors, who often blend their undeniable professional experience with their university status. Their analyses, written in French and English, cover at least seven different countries, and sometimes describe realities and challenges that largely transcend borders. Numerous issues that are closely intertwined are addressed including multilingual education, professional training of interpreters and translators, community interpreting, the needs of governments and international organizations, the development of lexical resources, language engineering, etc.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter examines representations of sand in pre-state Hebrew poetry. It first considers the poem “A Small Letter” (1894), subtitled “From the Diaspora to My Brothers in Zion,” by Hayim Nahman Bialik, who describes the diaspora as unstable ground on which permanent residence is impossible. It then discusses changes in the Yishuv’s attitude toward the geographical space of Eretz Israel in the 1920s and how these relate to the evolving political structure of the Yishuv. It also analyzes the poetry of the Third Aliyah, including Avot Yeshurun’s Hunger and Thirst, in which the sand draws its meaning from place. The chapter suggests that the poetry of the Third Aliyah portrays Tel Aviv as a text written on sand, and that such portrayal is intertwined with the city’s location on the coast.

Abstract (sommario):
This is a work of and about literary criticism. Its title signals a contribution to debates about reading. We think “through”—“by means of,” “with”—poems, sympathetically elaborating their surfaces. We “think through” poems to their end—solving a problem, getting to their roots. And we “think through” to “go beyond,” in a philosophical, speculative criticism to which the poem carries us. All three meanings of “through” are in play throughout. The subtitle applies “field” first to Romantic studies—offering new readings of canonical British Romantic poems to address contemporary topics (depth vs. surface, formalism’s return, materialism, theory vs. history of lyric), and narrating, enacting, and conceptualizing the arc of the field’s scholarship since the 1980s. Examples are drawn especially from Wordsworth, but also from Coleridge and, for Romanticism’s afterlife, from Stevens. In addition, “field” indicates the shift during that time-span from a unitary to a field-concept of form, a concept that synthesizes form and history, privileges analytic scale, and displaces entity (text) by “relation” as object of investigation. Connecting early 19th-century intellectual trends to antecedents in Spinoza and related 20th/21st-century revolutions in the postclassical sciences, the book introduces new models to literary study. Unlike accounts of science’s influence on literature, or various “literature + X” approaches (literature and ecology, literature and cognitive science), it constructs its object in a way cognate with work in non-humanities disciplines, thus highlighting a certain unity to knowledge. The claim is that literary critics can renew understanding of their own field by studying the thinking of certain scientific communities.

Abstract (sommario):
We compare fan subtitles and subtitles produced by professionals in order to detect what concepts each of them foreground, and how they differ in register and in translation strategy. Differences are systematically explored with the help of corpus-assisted discourse analysis to contrast two sets of English subtitles from 26 Korean dramas and 451 episodes – fan subtitles from Viki and professional subtitles from Netflix. Results reveal that professional translators show more target text orientation, whereas fan translators position themselves and their readers as expert members of their community, aiming for access to the source text. We find no clear difference in register, but professional subtitles are more concise, whereas Viki subtitles are longer and employ, e.g., hedges and disfluency markers.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis chapter offers a guide on how to implement good research practices in research procedures, following the logical steps in research planning from idea development to the planning of analysis of collected data and data sharing. This chapter argues that sound research methodology is a foundation for responsible science. At the beginning of each part of the chapter, the subtitles are formulated as questions that may arise during your research process, in the attempt to bring the content closer to the everyday questions you may encounter in research. We hope to stimulate insight into how much we can predict about a research study before it even begins. Research integrity and research ethics are not presented as separate aspects of research planning, but as integral parts that are important from the beginning, and which often set the directions of research activities in the study.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Graphematical analysis marks the first stage of text processing. However, prior to it, basic text structuring takes place, resulting in the identification of paragraphs and their types, e.g. title, subtitle, author name(s), chapter and section titles, footnotes, endnotes, figures, appendices, epigraphs, etc. After that, graphematical analysis proper begins. Its aim is to decompose the flow of letter and non-letter graphemes into character strings such as individual words, abbreviations, numbers, and hybrid strings (e.g. mathematical formulae). The procedure implies an iterative process of unit assembling, from individual characters to what is called atoms, next to tokens (roughly equivalent to word occurrences), sentence parts and finally, a whole sentence. At every stage, each unit is assigned its type. Assembling relies on the rules based solely on a thorough structural analysis of context. No formal models or statistical methods are applied, this being a central principle of the linguistic analyzer, inherent in all its algorithms. At this stage, complications arise primarily through the ambiguity of punctuation marks. They are discussed at length throughout the chapter.

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the quality of environmental visualization of selected regions in Czech geography textbooks for primary and lower secondary schools. The method of quantitative content analysis of visuals was used. The categories of quantitative analysis were defined based on the content of the environmental and geographical curriculum, for example landscape type, emotional charge etc. The results show a relatively similar structure of environmental visualization between textbooks: emotionally positive visuals showing the protection of cultural-historical heritage and protection of nature dominate. The exception is the Moravskoslezský kraj, which is visually presented in a negative way compared to other regions. In textbooks there are a minimum of abstract visuals or visuals showing the tendencies of environmental components.

Abstract (sommario):
With regard to surprising results of Parliamentary elections in Slovakia their geographic dimension is also important. The aim of this article is to analyze the milieu of elections and the subsequent spatial differentiation of the results of the 8 parties which were successful to enter the Parliament. Election data were processed via the diversification of election preferences, the identification of areas of election support and correlation analysis by means of which the mutual cohesion of individual parties election results was studied. We found out that within the diversification of election preferences the one party dominance – the winning SMER – SD (40 out of Slovakia’s 79 districts) – prevails. Further we have dealt with the identification of areas of political parties support, with emphasis to their core regions.
