Abstract (sommario):
In 2015, South African university student protests drew critical attention to the state of higher education in the country. Newspaper reports of the student protests were pervasive. Reports of the violence that characterised parts of the protests dominated the news despite the students’ impact on the positive changes in higher education. Using a thematic analysis, this article interrogates student representation in newspapers from the inception of the protests to the end of the 2015 academic year. Four themes were identified: students as destructive vandals, violators of the rights of others, law-breakers, and agents of transformation. Results indicate that newspaper reports of the violence overshadowed reports of the positive changes that the student protestors catalysed, and in so doing, newspaper reports during this time delegitimised the students as agents of change.

Abstract (sommario):
Writing is a crucial skill for students, particularly for those at tertiary level, yet it is a fact that many find writing challenging to master. A number of methods and strategies, therefore, have been employed in an attempt to develop students’ writing skill, and a student-run school newspaper is one of them. This paper aims at reporting whether the school newspaper The SFLook results in its members’ improved writing and how the students self-evaluate the impact of the project. First, the students’ (n = 20) pre-test and post-test before and after a twelve-week action were examined to assess their writing performance. Besides, a questionnaire was delivered to investigate their attitudes towards different aspects during the time working for the newspaper. The findings indicate that the school newspaper has reinforced its members’ writing skill and their motivations for writing are bound to external factors. The research results would suggest further applications of student – run newspapers in various educational contexts.

Abstract (sommario):
This article is a case study of Wansolwara, the University of the South Pacific (USP) journalism programme student training newspaper. The article compares the outcomes of Wansolwara’s coverage of the 2000 and 2006 Fiji coups in relation to student learning and an alternative media voice in a climate of restrictions. Interviews with student journalists and lecturers involved in the coup coverage indicate that Wansolwara’s status as a campus-based newspaper has been a strategic benefit in filling some gaps in mainstream media reporting, besides providing students with empowering learning experiences. The case study illustrates the importance of an independent, campus-based newspaper somewhat less restrained by commercial pressures and less exposed to direct state coercion.

Abstract (sommario):
This study addresses the concerns over newspapers' reporting of suicide cases in Hong Kong, SAR (Special Administrative Region), using the WHO guidelines on the reporting of suicide news as a reference for comparison. We compared the official suicide information extracted from the Coroner's Court for the year 2000 with newspaper reports on suicides taken from five major Chinese local newspapers, which accounted for about 80% of the total circulation in Hong Kong. The type of newspaper reporting on suicides was also examined. Newspapers tended to report on those suicide victims who suffered relationship problems, whereas those who had family problems were significantly underreported. Among the suicides reported in the newspapers, 6.2% were found on the front page and the majority of the reports were presented pictorially. The reporting of suicides was selective and the coverage was incomplete, with student suicides reported excessively. The method of reporting for Hong Kong newspapers was not in line with the recommendations of the WHO or international best practices on presenting suicide news. For this reason we recommend a partnership approach with active participation from the media on suicide prevention so that communication professionals can proactively participate in suicide prevention work more effectively.

Abstract (sommario):
Many agenda-setting researchers argue that personal experience with issues or events in a community diminishes use of mass media. This study challenges this notion and, drawing on the community attachment model, hypothesizes that personal experience normally will increase newspaper reading. Personal experience increases reading because rarely is it identical or isomorphic with news coverage, especially in pluralistic systems, and because, like social ties in general, personal experience often stimulates additional needs for information. Data support the key hypothesis when it comes to reading of the local community weekly and student newspapers, but not for the metropolitan newspaper.

Abstract (sommario):
Todays, the newspaper has been converging from print to digital. The advantages of the digital newspaper have made the digital newspaper a top choice especially for the student as a digital native group. The purpose of this study is to know and explain the acceptance of user (students) to the digital newspaper. This study proposed a theoretical framework that includes the core constructs in TAM: namely, Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU), Perceived Usefulness (PU), Attitude Toward Use (ATU), Behaviour Intention to Use (BIU) and Actual Use (AU). The statistical test method is statistical validity, reliability, normality, and test the influence of factors using Structural Equation Model (SEM). Data were obtained through questionnaires distributed to 100 UAJY students of Atma Jaya University Yogyakarta (UAJY) respondents from 5 faculties. The overall hypothesis proposed in this study is accepted, namely: Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU) has a positive effect on Perceived Usefulness (PU); Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU) has a positive effect on Attitudes Toward Use (ATU); Perceived Usefulness (PU) has a positive effect on Behavioral Intention to Use (BIU) Attitude (ATU) has a positive effect on Behavioral Intention to Use (BIU) ); Behavior Intention to use (BIU) has a positive effect on actual using (AU) digital newspaper.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to describe the challenges associated with identifying newspapers of record for local, regional and national newspapers, specifically as those challenges pertain to students’ news media literacy. Visual literacy and information literacy intersections are explored. Design/methodology/approach Newspapers of record for province/territory and state areas of Canada and the United States of America were identified for student project purposes. Criteria for newspaper of record qualification were investigated, refined, and applied to all newspapers reviewed. Findings Distinguishing newspapers of record based on traditional criteria is inadequate in an online environment. Criteria must be more flexible and address both the visual as well as the content aspects of newspapers. Neither database access nor native website access alone is sufficient for identifying these newspapers. Straightforward and definitive identification of these newspapers will no longer be possible. Practical implications Librarians will be faced with focusing on content or visual literacy, addressing both in a meaningful way during a single instruction session will be difficult. More strategic instruction within and across disciplines is necessary to produce news media-literate and savvy students. Originality/value News media literacy for students in all disciplines is an urgent need and must incorporate both visual and content literacies. In a time of proliferation of news sources, understanding the challenges associated with identifying newspapers of record for both librarians and students is a necessary step in this area of information literacy.

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation will identify and describe the state of the law regarding student speech and press freedom. The following questions will be explored: What rights do young people have? What standards have state and federal courts established? To what extent and how clearly have state statutes defined student expressive rights? What do state laws say about this topic? What issues have yet to be addressed, either because a case has not raised certain issues or because the issue does not lend itself to compromise or a clear solution? How does the capacity of social media for widespread and rapid dissemination affect the balancing of First Amendment rights with other interests? Among other topics, the dissertation will discuss the development of First Amendment law, the strengthening of student expression law in the 1960s, the curtailment of student expression rights at the K-12 level in the 1980s, and state legislation that protects student expression at the K-12 and university levels. The conclusion will contain strategies for the enhancement of students’ First Amendment rights.

Rowlands, Alice J. "Student identified leadership competencies, skills, behaviors, and training needs: perspectives of college newspaper editors". Diss., Texas A&M University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/3809.

Abstract (sommario):
This study identified the leadership competencies, skills, behaviors, and training needs most critical to a college newspaper leader's success. A Web-based Delphi technique, supported by the Center for Distance Learning Research at Texas A&M University, was used to submit three rounds of questionnaires to a panel of 25 editors from 19 institutions in 13 states. The experts responded to 13 open-ended questions in Round One designed to elicit information to establish the leadership competencies, skills, and behaviors critical to college newsroom leaders. Round One also established information concerning participants' prior knowledge of the top leadership position. The Round Two instrument included seven questions with 189 statements developed from responses to Round One. Panelists rated responses using a four-point Likert scale. Panelists reached consensus in the final round by selecting the three most important of the ranked responses to each question returned from Round Two. Additional questions asked for recommendations for the future training and development of editors. The panel's list of leadership traits agrees with more than 50 percent of the admired traits of all leaders (Kouzes and Posner,1997), and more than 50 percent of the ideal traits of top professional journalists (Peters, 2001). The panel reached consensus on 8 situations they considered unique to the college newsroom that had a significant impact on their leadership experience. The topthree included: the need to manage everything and still publish a great paper, dealing with uncommitted students, and dealing with frequent staff changes. The panel reached consensus on the following as most important for incoming college newsroom leaders: the most critical leadership competency was "ability to communicate"; the most critical leadership behavior was "a passion to improve and develop the newspaper"; the most critical leadership competency editors "lacked" was "ability to take charge"; the experiences they considered most important to shaping their understanding of the role was that it is a full-time, difficult, and frustrating position; and they indicate that "dedication to the newspaper" is the leadership trait that separates an average from a great newsroom leader.

Abstract (sommario):
With the increase of cooperation between America and China, the average person's perception of the other country could be an important factor that influences the development of the relationship between these countries. This study was designed to explore how Americans student journalists view China and how these student journalists select the news for a campus newspaper that might influence their readers' perceptions of China. Student journalists not only represent American youth but also act as connectors and filters between a huge flow of information outside and students on campus. A convenience census sample of student journalists at a campus newspaper were surveyed and interviewed. The results showed that although Americans student journalists know more about China than before, Orientalism is still alive in their perceptions and representations of China. They have both strange "Other" and romantic images about China. They view China as a communist evil with less democracy; yet at the same time think of China as a romantic mystery with a fabulous history and colorful culture. In the process of American student journalists constructing their perceptions about China, mass media play a role of agenda-setter. Subjects depended on mass media to get to know China, and their perceptions of China mirror the orientation of the government's policy and mass media's coverage.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this essay is to study how the University Church is represented in student newspapers. By conducting an inductive thematic analysis on sixteen articles chosen from newspapers distributed by the student union at three Swedish universities, the main purpose of the study is to further understand the role and function of the University Church in a contemporary Swedish context. Three themes emerging from the initial step of the thematic analysis were chosen for further analysis: (1) a secularized church?, (2) provocation and (3) reasons to seek out the University Church. The themes were then highlighted by two theoretical perspectives: Mark Chaves’ theory of internal secularization and a theoretical framework developed by Anders Bäckström with the aim to explain the role of the church as a welfare agent in Sweden. The study shows that the University Church is portrayed as both an ambiguous and complex organization. On one hand, the material shows that the University Church is expected to serve as one student welfare provider among several others on campus. On the other hand, the University Church is blamed for enforcing the dominating Christian hegemony and thus excluding students belonging to other faith traditions. On a macro level, the study shows that the University Church’s intentions do not always correlate with the expected role of the church expressed by critics. Consequently, the University Church seems to struggle with finding its role, much like the Church of Sweden has done since the disestablishment in 2000. On a meso level, secularization of religious authorities was noticeable in the material as university chaplains are depicted spending a majority of their time on providing student welfare. However, no general decrease in the religiosity of the overall church organization could be confirmed in the study. In conclusion, the study shows that the potential secularized nature of the University Church is not necessarily perceived as negative by students. Instead, the University Church has the potential to become a hybrid institution, bridging the gap between the religious and the secular sphere at Swedish universities.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractPresentation of the problem: The goal with this graduation project is to produce a new visual concept for the student newspaper Campus, this will be expressed in the form of page templates. The page templates will have a visual concept that appears through graphical elements. The client's wishes were that the student newspaper should be audience appropriate, attractive, inviting, reliable, modern and functional to work with.Theory: In order to implement the wishes and in a good way produce a consistent visual concept, we took a starting point in theory of graphic design. This theory has taken many of its principles from aesthetic theory, and therefore have we also used aesthetics to provide a deeper theoretical aspect. The principles we used in graphic design is; how to create a unity in the layout by using basic elements such as text, images, and white space. We have also looked at alignment-, form-, color-, contrast-, typography- and placement principles. The principles we have applied from aesthetics are color repetition, color contrasts, balance, visual harmony and depth.Method: The empirical studies consisted of a qualitative content analysis of student newspapers, followed by a focus-group study with respondents from the Campus newspaper target group. The purpose of the two studies was to, via a content analysis, get a general picture of the design language that is used on the market today. This, combined with theory, helped us to create a visual expression that stands outside the general form. It was done in four different dummies, these dummies were discussed by the focus-group.Results: Our first empirical study showed how student newspapers are designed today. With support of theory, the functioning principles was sorted out and used in the four dummies. During the focus-group analysis, opinions about the dummies were presented. We could therefore see what the respondents wanted in the page templates. Together with the client's wishes and analysis from the empirical studies, a new concept developed. It will be perceived as clean and structured together with attitude.

Koch was an assistant professor of biology and author of a letter to the student newspaper condoning premarital sexual intercourse and cohabitation for sufficiently mature university students. Parents, community leaders, and Illinois newspapers strongly condemned him and called for his firing. A faculty committee quickly recommended dismissal, which President Henry approved. The American Association of University Professors (AAUP), Illinois students, and many faculty, both at Illinois and across the nation, came to Koch’s defense, to no avail. The case was appealed all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, but the firing stood.

Abstract (sommario):
The alternative black press grew in popularity and editorial stridency in the 1960s, prompting commercial publishers to try to steer the Black Power Movement into acceptable political channels. Alternative publications included student newspapers, leftist political journals, and organizational newspapers for Black Nationalist groups. The Black Panther and Muhammad Speaks claimed circulations that rivaled the largest commercial newspapers. Alternative editors questioned the value of integration, endorsed armed self-defense, and embraced a Marxist critique of American capitalism and empire. Commercial publishers attempted to advise young sit-in protesters and then tried to define Black Power as the effective use of political power. By the late 1960s, though, they almost universally condemned the Black Panther Party and other militant activists, fearing unneeded provocations would erase significant legislative achievements.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter covers the growth, development, and challenges facing UNC in the last decades of the 20th century, and the pressures on the student newspaper, both financially and ideologically. The Daily Tar Heel came under constant fire for being too politically left, or liberal, even though there were some more conservative editors and columnists. Attempts were made to defund the paper, and/or shut it down, including two lawsuits. The growing conservatism of the student body is covered, along with the rise of the New Right nationally. The Black Student Movement, the Women’s Movement, and the Gay and Lesbian Rights Movement (later LGBTQ) are topics debated heavily on campus and in the student newspaper. Importance of basketball is discussed, as the UNC tem becomes a national power. As the paper turns 100 years old, a plan is developed to again take it off-campus as a private non-profit organization.

Abstract (sommario):
By the middle of the decade, civil rights dominated the nation’s news media, but the war was escalating, and the student newspaper, the Daily Illini, was filled with stories of both. The paper introduced a different news theme when free-speech protests at the University of California at Berkeley made the headlines. Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) sponsored an event on the UI quad to debate the war, a fraternity sponsored a blood drive for the soldiers, and graduate students Vincent Wu and Vern Fein recall their experiences surrounding free speech, civil rights, and early antiwar activities.

Abstract (sommario):
Aim/Purpose: This paper focuses on student newspapers in the midst of digital transfor-mation and the impact this has on their future survival. Background: The ramification of digital transformation on commercial newspapers is not new, but looking at it from a big picture helped to us to connect to what has been happening with student newspapers across the United States. Methodology: Through a limited review of selected student newspapers across the country, this paper attempted to identify key challenges, trends, and best practices to determine the current as well as future state of this media model. Contribution: The knowledge gained was then used to inform a transition of a specific stu-dent newspaper to cope with its own challenges and to share this condition with other schools around the nation. Findings: Due to the digital transformation, the traditional student newspapers have been disrupted and are going through the transition into digital platforms similar to those in the commercial newspapers. Yet, the value of the content is still important. Recommendations for Practitioners: Rapidly advanced technology transform student newspapers into a real-time, highly customized, personal, rich with multimedia format. This means the newspapers must be able to reach where their readers are and deliver what their readers ask for. Recommendation for Researchers: The transition of newspapers to be more digitized calls for more studies on the rise of new generation of readership, the relentless changes in technology, the search for a sustainable revenue model for e-newspaper, as well as issues in self-generated journalism. Impact on Society: As more people gain access to portable digital devices, the desire for hard copy newspapers that report yesterday’s news is rapidly decreasing. In today’s world, the news is instantaneous and the lag time between the event and it being reported is sometimes mere seconds. Future Research: Research on “fake news” is important as newspapers become more digitalized.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper deals with the conception and implementation of internet-based magazines such as online newspapers and e-journals. This topic will be discussed by the use of a precise e-newspaper implementation project called “ZeWIC”. ZeWIC is short for “Zeitung der Wirtschaftsinformatik in Clausthal”. It is a source of information for the students mostly for their study purposes at the Technical University of Clausthal. First there is some information given about electronic newspapers in general. Then ZeWIC is described, starting with the data model which forms the background of this special newspaper, and continuing with the particular implementation. This paper ends with a perspective about what can and will be changed or added soon to ZeWIC to improve ZeWIC’s service even more.

Abstract (sommario):
Engineering practitioners often find themselves required to locate technical and non-technical information from a variety of sources. They may generate quotes, research equipment specifications, determine market shares, delineate a proposed manufacturing process, find company profiles, retrieve demographics data, certify compliance with international or national standards, or research any one of countless other pieces of information. This may involve books, CDs, periodicals, newspapers, corresponding via email, fax, letters or the worldwide web, across several languages. Few classroom projects address practitioner’s needs for broad information research skills. This paper details strategies for a unique student research project leading to useful experience applicable to engineering and engineering technology practitioners in any discipline, in any locality. The project could be instituted in virtually any class at any level and run in any language. It is readily adaptable to changing technology, any textbook, and has now been in use since 1982. As implemented at Purdue University, it has been cited by multiple ABET re-accreditation teams for innovation and as an excellent example of continuously improved instruction. Over the years it has grown to become one of the more noteworthy experiences cited in both student exit surveys and in graduate surveys.
