Abstract (sommario):
How do people perceive and communicate structure? We investigate this question by letting participants play a communication game, where one player describes a pattern, and another player redraws it based on the description alone. We use this paradigm to compare two models of pattern description, one compositional (complex structures built out of simpler ones) and one noncompositional. We find that compositional patterns are communicated more effectively than noncompositional patterns, that a compositional model of pattern description predicts which patterns are harder to describe, and that this model can be used to evaluate participants’ drawings, producing humanlike quality ratings. Our results suggest that natural language can tap into a compositionally structured pattern description language.

Abstract (sommario):
Vocal communication systems have a set of rules that govern the arrangement of acoustic signals, broadly defined as ‘syntax’. However, there is a limited understanding of potentially shared or analogous rules across vocal displays in different taxa. Recent work on songbirds has investigated syntax using network-based modelling. This technique quantifies features such as connectivity (adjacent signals in a sequence) and recurring patterns. Here, we apply network-based modelling to the complex, hierarchically structured songs of humpback whales ( Megaptera novaeangliae ) from east Australia. Given the song's annual evolving pattern and the cultural conformity of males within a population, network modelling captured the patterns of multiple song types over 13 consecutive years. Song arrangements in each year displayed clear ‘small-world’ network structure, characterized by clusters of highly connected sounds. Transitions between these connected sounds further suggested a combination of both structural stability and variability. Small-world network structure within humpback songs may facilitate the characteristic and persistent vocal learning observed. Similar small-world structures and transition patterns are found in several birdsong displays, indicating common syntactic patterns among vocal learning in multiple taxa. Understanding the syntactic rules governing vocal displays in multiple, independently evolving lineages may indicate what rules or structural features are important to the evolution of complex communication, including human language.

Abstract (sommario):
The subject of this investigation is light diffraction from a structure formed at the lateral projection of structured light on the surface of a 3D object. It is demonstrated that the patterns of vertically structured light fringes change their structure during the lateral illumination of a 3D object, and take on the properties of holograms. The diffraction of light from this structure forms several diffraction orders, and one of them can restore the image of the 3D object. Results of the numerical experiment demonstrating the possibility to restore 3D holographic images by these patterns at a wavelength corresponding to Bragg conditions are presented. The obtained result allows an order of magnitude higher compression of the holographic information about a 3D object to be transmitted along the communication channel, in a volume that is sufficient for visual perception, and for the observation of both the horizontal and vertical continuous parallax. Results of the experiments on the transmission of this compressed information are presented to demonstrate that the TV frame rate frequency of the 3D holographic video sequence is quite achievable.

Abstract (sommario):
Most database textbooks on conceptual modeling do not cover domainspecific patterns. The texts emphasize notation, apparently assuming that notation enables individuals to correctly model domain-specific knowledge acquired from experience. However, the domain knowledge acquired may not aid in the construction of conceptual models if it is not structured to support conceptual modeling. This study uses the Resources Events Agents (REA) pattern as an example of a domain-specific pattern that can be encoded as a knowledge structure for conceptual modeling of accounting information systems (AIS), and tests its effects on the accuracy of conceptual modeling in a familiar business setting. Fifty-three undergraduate and forty-six graduate students completed recall tasks designed to measure REA knowledge structure. The accuracy of participants' conceptual models was positively related to REA knowledge structure. Results suggest it is insufficient to know only conceptual modeling notation because structured knowledge of domain-specific patterns reduces design errors.

Abstract (sommario):
<p><em>Morphology and Syntax are very important studies in learning English. Morphology learns about how the words are structured and how they are put together from smaller part. It can be considered as the grammar of words. Meanwhile, Syntax discusses how the sentence is structured. The objectives of the research are to find out inflectional morphemes, derivational morphemes, and the patterns of clause structure which are found in political news on online Tempo in January 2019. This research used qualitative design and content analysis design where the source of data was article political news on Online Tempo in January, 2019. The major instrument of this research is the researchers themselves because they actively obtained and clustered the data and the secondary data was data sheet. The findings revealed three types of morphosyntactic, firstly, the researchers found 5 patterns of inflectional morpheme with 26 words. The most dominant pattern of inflectional morpheme was singular changing to the plural. Secondly, for derivational morpheme, it identified two types of classes including class-changing and class-mantaining. There were 3 patterns with 10 words in class-changing and 1 pattern with 1 word in class-mantaining. The study also showed that the common pattern of derivational morpheme was class-changing pattern (verb to noun). Thirdly, there were 7 patterns with 15 clauses that were used in political news. The result of this study proved that the dominant pattern of clause structure was S-V- to Infinitive pattern with 4 clauses.</em></p>

Abstract (sommario):
This paper describes a domain independent approach for automatically constructing information extraction patterns for semi-structured web pages. Given a randomly chosen page from a web site of similarly structured pages, the system identifies a region of the page that has a regular "tabular" structure, and then infers an extraction pattern that will match the "rows" of the region and identify the data elements. The approach was tested on three corpora containing a series of tabular web sites from different domains and achieved a success rate of at least 80%. A significant strength of the system is that it can infer extraction patterns from a single training page and does not require any manual labeling of the training page.

Abstract (sommario):
Interaction design patterns have evolved as a resource that facilitates documentation and the reuse of proven solutions. They provide a structured and understandable mechanism for what to do in the design. Mobile devices have characteristics, configurations, and restrictions that make the construction of their interfaces full of particularities to this environment, and problems that are often common to designers and developers. This study presented a systematic mapping of the state-of-the-art regarding interaction design patterns for mobile devices. A total of 23 studies that include articles and books met the selection criteria in this mapping, examining relevant scientific databases and books that were cited in relevant articles. As a main result, 336 patterns were compiled, with 261 of these problems and solutions being dissimilar from each other. The paper describes patterns in 18 categories covering different interaction aspects. Pattern structural elements with mentions in more than five papers included: Name, Solution, Problem, Context, Examples, Related Patterns, Forces, Consequences and Figure. Four studies reported empirical evaluation of the patterns with a limited number of users. The paper contributed with a categorization of existing patterns and the challenges for uniformization of structure and empirical evidence with user evaluation.

Abstract (sommario):
The most common pattern types for anode structuring, in particular the line, grid, and hexagonal-arranged hole pattern were evaluated in a comparable setup in full-cells and symmetrical cells. The cells with structured electrodes were compared to reference cells with unstructured anodes of similar areal capacity (4.3 mAh cm−2) and the onset of lithium plating during fast-charging was determined in situ by differential voltage analysis of the voltage relaxation and ex situ by post-mortem analysis. Furthermore, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements on symmetrical cells were used to determine the ionic resistance of structured and unstructured electrodes of similar areal capacity. All cells with structured electrodes showed lower ionic resistances and an onset of lithium plating shifted to higher C-rates compared to cells with unstructured electrodes. The structure patterns with capillary structures, i.e., lines and grids, showed significant reduced lithium plating during fast-charging and a higher rate capability compared to reference cells with unstructured electrodes and cells with hole structured electrodes. The continuous rewetting of the electrode with liquid electrolyte by capillary forces and the reduced ionic resistance of the 3D electrode are identified as key factors in improving overall battery performance. The data of the studied cells were used to calculate the resulting energy and power densities of prospective commercial pouch cells and potential pitfalls in the comparison to cells with unstructured electrodes were identified.

Abstract (sommario):
Structured illumination microscopy (SIM) is a promising super-resolution technique for imaging subcellular structures and dynamics due to its compatibility with most commonly used fluorescent labeling methods. Structured illumination can be obtained by either laser interference or projection of fringe patterns. Here, we proposed a fringe projector composed of a compact multi-wavelength LEDs module and a digital micromirror device (DMD) which can be directly attached to most commercial inverted fluorescent microscopes and update it into a SIM system. The effects of the period and duty cycle of fringe patterns on the modulation depth of the structured light field were studied. With the optimized fringe pattern, [Formula: see text] resolution improvement could be obtained with high-end oil objectives. Multicolor imaging and dynamics of subcellular organelles in live cells were also demonstrated. Our method provides a low-cost solution for SIM setup to expand its wide range of applications to most research labs in the field of life science and medicine.

Abstract (sommario):
Even though hard, low friction coatings such as diamond like carbon (DLC) would be beneficial for the performance and longevity of rubber seals, a crucial challenge remains. The elastic mismatch of rubber substrate and DLC coating prevents a fracture free coating application. In this work, a nature inspired approach is applied to render the stiff coating flexible and resilient to delamination at the same time by direct patterning. Rubber substrates were laser structured with tile patterns and subsequently DLC coated. Tensile and tribology tests were performed on structured and unstructured samples. Unstructured DLC coatings showed a crack pattern induced by the coating process, which was further fragmented by tensile stress. Coatings with tile patterns did not experience a further fragmentation under load. During continuous tribological loading, less heterogenous damage is produced for tile structured samples. The findings are ascribed to the relief of induced coating stress by the tile structure, meaning a more resilient coating.

Abstract (sommario):
Super-resolution structured illumination microscopy (SR-SIM) is an optical fluorescence microscopy method which is suitable for imaging a wide variety of cells and tissues in biological and biomedical research. Typically, SIM methods use high spatial frequency illumination patterns generated by laser interference. This approach provides high resolution but is limited to thin samples such as cultured cells. Using a different strategy for processing raw data and coarser illumination patterns, we imaged through a 150-micrometer-thick coronal section of a mouse brain expressing GFP in a subset of neurons. The resolution reached 144 nm, an improvement of 1.7-fold beyond conventional widefield imaging.

Abstract (sommario):
Companies are more frequently seen shifting their focus from technological innovation towards business model innovation. One efficient option for business model innovation is to learn from existing solutions, i.e., business model patterns. However, the various understandings of the business model pattern concept are often confusing and contradictory, with the available collections incomplete, overlapping, and inconsistently structured. Therefore, the rich body of literature on business model patterns has not yet reached its full potential for both practical application as well as theoretic advancement. To help remedy this, we conduct an exhaustive review, filter for duplicates, and structure the patterns along several dimensions by applying a rigorous taxonomy-building approach. The resulting business model pattern database allows for navigation to the relevant set of patterns for a specific impact on a company’s business model. It can be used for systematic business model innovation, which we illustrate via a simplified case study.

Abstract (sommario):
In the last years, the completion of the human genome sequencing showed a wide range of new challenging issues involving raw data analysis. In particular, the discovery of information implicitly encoded in biological sequences is assuming a prominent role in identifying genetic diseases and in deciphering biological mechanisms. This information is usually represented by patterns frequently occurring in the sequences. Because of biological observations, a specific class of patterns is becoming particularly interesting: frequent structured patterns. In this respect, it is biologically meaningful to look at both "exact" and "approximate" repetitions of pattens within the available sequences. This paper gives a contribution in this setting by providing algorithms which allow to discover frequent structured patterns, both in "exact" and "approximate" form, present in a collection of input biological sequences.

Repetitive vector patterns are common in a variety of applications but can be challenging and tedious to create. Existing automatic synthesis methods target relatively simple, unstructured patterns such as discrete elements and continuous Bézier curves. This paper proposes an algorithm for generating vector patterns with diverse shapes and structured local interactions via a sample-based representation. Our main idea is adding explicit clustering as part of neighborhood similarity and iterative sample optimization for more robust sample synthesis and pattern reconstruction. The results indicate that our method can outperform existing methods on synthesizing a variety of structured vector textures. Our project page is available at https://phtu-cs.github.io/cvt-sig22/.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study was to investigate determinants of the activity patterns of women prior to pregnancy and factors associated with quitting activities during pregnancy. Methods: These data arose from a study designed to look at the impact of exercise in pregnancy on birth weight (Campbell and Mottola, 2001). This secondary analysis explored relationships between subject characteristics and exercise patterns via a self-completed questionnaire. Univariable and multivariable odds ratios were estimated using logistic regression. Multivariable models used backward stepwise variable selection. Results: A total of 853 women agreed to participate and 529 women (62%) returned completed questionnaires. Of these, 369 (70%) and 258 (49%) engaged in a structured exercise program before pregnancy and in Trimester 3, respectively. Factors associated with engaging in regular structured exercise prior to pregnancy included: postsecondary education (OR = 1.50; 0.98, 2.30), no children (OR = 2.44; 1.56, 3.82), nonsmoker (OR = 1.84; 1.18, 2.88), and involvement in regular recreational activities (OR = 3.07; 1.81, 5.20). During pregnancy, all categories of activity decreased except walking, which increased by Trimester 3. Factors associated with quitting a regular structured exercise program by Trimester 3 were: having children (OR = 1.67; 1.05, 2.67), a prepregnancy BMI of >= 25 (OR = 1.79; 1.04, 3.13), and higher weight gain. Implications: Community programs that encourage active living should address these factors. Key words: active living, pregnant, community walking programs

Abstract (sommario):
In this investigation, we propose a motionless polarizing structured illumination microscopy as an axially sectioning and reflective-type device to measure the 3D surface profiles of specimens. Based on the spatial phase-shifting technique to obtain the visibility of the illumination pattern. Instead of using a grid, a Wollaston prism is used to generate the light pattern by the stable interference of two beams. As the polarization states of two beams are orthogonal with each other, a polarization pixelated CMOS camera can simultaneously obtain four phase-shifted patterns with the beams after passing through a quarter wave plate based on the spatial phase-shifting technique with polarization. In addition, a focus tunable lens is used to eliminate a mechanical moving part for the axial scanning of the specimen. In the experimental result, a step height sample and a concave mirror were measured with 0.05 µm and 0.2 mm repeatabilities of step height and the radius of curvature, respectively.

Abstract (sommario):
Pattern matching is an important operation in functional programs. So far, pattern matching has been investigated in the context of structured terms. This article presents an approach to extend pattern matching to terms without (much of a) structure such as binaries which is the kind of data format that network applications typically manipulate. After introducing the binary datatype and a notation for matching binary data against patterns, we present an algorithm that constructs a decision tree automaton from a set of binary patterns. We then show how the pattern matching using this tree automaton can be made adaptive, how redundant tests can be avoided, and how we can further reduce the size of the resulting automaton by taking interferences between patterns into account. Since the size of the tree automaton is exponential in the worst case, we also present an alternative new approach to compiling binary pattern matching which is conservative in space and analyze its complexity properties. The effectiveness of our techniques is evaluated using standard packet filter benchmarks and on implementations of network protocols taken from actual telecom applications.

Abstract (sommario):
Cloud computing systems offer an attractive alternative to traditional IT-systems, because of economic benefits that arise from the cloud's scalable and flexible IT-resources. The benefits are of particular interest for SME's. The reason is that using Cloud Resources allows an SME to focus on its core business rather than on IT-resources. However, numerous concerns about the security of cloud computing services exist. Potential cloud customers have to be confident that the cloud services they acquire are secure for them to use. Therefore, they have to have a clear set of security requirements covering their security needs. Eliciting these requirements is a difficult task, because of the amount of stakeholders and technical components to consider in a cloud environment. Therefore, the authors propose a structured, pattern-based method supporting eliciting security requirements and selecting security measures. The method guides potential cloud customers to model the application of their business case in a cloud computing context using a pattern-based approach. Thus, a potential cloud customer can instantiate our so-called Cloud System Analysis Pattern. Then, the information of the instantiated pattern can be used to fill-out our textual security requirements patterns and individual defined security requirement patterns, as well. The presented method is tool-supported. Our tool supports the instantiation of the cloud system analysis pattern and automatically transfers the information from the instance to the security requirements patterns. In addition, they have validation conditions that check e.g., if a security requirement refers to at least one element in the cloud. The authors illustrate their method using an online-banking system as running example.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose Patterns have proven to be useful for documenting general reusable solutions to a commonly occurring problem. In recent years, several different business process management (BPM)-related patterns have been published. Despite the large number of publications on this subject, there is no work that provides a comprehensive overview and categorization of the published business process model patterns. The purpose of this paper is to close this gap by providing a taxonomy of patterns as well as a classification of 89 research works. Design/methodology/approach The authors analyzed 280 research articles following a structured iterative procedure inspired by the method for taxonomy development from Nickerson et al. (2013). Using deductive and inductive reasoning processes embedded in concurrent as well as joint research activities, the authors created a taxonomy of patterns as well as a classification of 89 research works. Findings In general, the findings extend the current understanding of BPM patterns. The authors identify pattern categories that are highly populated with research works as well as categories that have received far less attention such as risk and security, the ecological perspective and process architecture. Further, the analysis shows that there is not yet an overarching pattern language for business process model patterns. The insights can be used as starting point for developing such a pattern language. Originality/value Up to now, no comprehensive pattern taxonomy and research classification exists. The taxonomy and classification are useful for searching pattern works which is also supported by an accompanying website complementing the work. In regard to future research and publications on patterns, the authors derive recommendations regarding the content and structure of pattern publications.

Abstract (sommario):
Constructing regular micro-structures with certain geometric characteristics on the surface of the polymer part can obtain some specific functions. Micro ultrasonic powder molding (micro-UPM) is an efficient processing technique for the fabrication of well-filled micro-structured Polypropylene (PP) parts. The micro-structure array on the surface of the core insert was obtained by low speed wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM-LS). PP polymer surfaces with micro-structured patterns were successfully replicated from the core insert surface after micro-UPM. By studying the detailed topography characterizations of micro-structured PP parts, the effects of processing parameters (ultrasonic energy, welding pressure and holding time) on the micro-structured filling show that when PP polymer was formed under the conditions of 1000 J, 115 kPa and 8 s during micro-UPM, well-filled micro-structured parts can be obtained. Besides, without low surface energy coating modification, the water contact angles (WCAs) of micro-structured PP parts increased from 85.3° to 146.8°, indicating that the wettability of the surface can be changed by replicating the micro-structure on PP parts after micro-UPM.

Abstract (sommario):
Optical microscopy, owing to its noninvasiveness and subcellular resolution, enables in vivo visualization of neuronal structure and function in the physiological context. Optical-sectioning structured illumination microscopy (OS-SIM) is a widefield fluorescence imaging technique that uses structured illumination patterns to encode in-focus structures and optically sections 3D samples. However, its application to in vivo imaging has been limited. In this study, we optimized OS-SIM for in vivo neural imaging. We modified OS-SIM reconstruction algorithms to improve signal-to-noise ratio and correct motion-induced artifacts in live samples. Incorporating an adaptive optics (AO) module to OS-SIM, we found that correcting sample-induced optical aberrations was essential for achieving accurate structural and functional characterizations in vivo. With AO OS-SIM, we demonstrated fast, high-resolution in vivo imaging with optical sectioning for structural imaging of mouse cortical neurons and zebrafish larval motor neurons, and functional imaging of quantal synaptic transmission at Drosophila larval neuromuscular junctions.

Abstract (sommario):
Molecular dynamics simulations, at different scales, have been exploited for investigating complex mechanisms ruling biologically inspired systems. Nonetheless, with recent advances and unprecedented achievements, the analysis of molecular dynamics simulations requires customized workflows. In 2018, we developed Morphoscanner to retrieve structural relations within self-assembling peptide systems. In particular, we conceived Morphoscanner for tracking the emergence of β-structured domains in self-assembling peptide systems. Here, we introduce Morphoscanner2.0. Morphoscanner2.0 is an object-oriented library for structural and temporal analysis of atomistic and coarse-grained molecular dynamics (CG-MD) simulations written in Python. The library leverages MDAnalysis, PyTorch and NetworkX to perform the pattern recognition of secondary structure patterns, and interfaces with Pandas, Numpy and Matplotlib to make the results accessible to the user. We used Morphoscanner2.0 on both simulation trajectories and protein structures. Because of its dependencies on the MDAnalysis package, Morphoscanner2.0 can read several file formats generated by widely-used molecular simulation packages such as NAMD, Gromacs, OpenMM. Morphoscanner2.0 also includes a routine for tracking the alpha-helix domain formation.

Abstract (sommario):
While Big Data analytics can provide a variety of benefits, processing heterogeneous data comes with its own set of limitations. A transaction pattern must be studied independently while working with Bitcoin data, this study examines twitter data related to Bitcoin and investigate communications pattern on bitcoin transactional tweet. Using the hashtags #Bitcoin or #BTC on Twitter, a vast amount of data was gathered, which was mined to uncover a pattern that everyone either (speculators, teaches, or the stakeholders) uses on Twitter to discuss Bitcoin transactions. This aim is to determine the direction of Bitcoin transaction tweets based on historical data. As a result, this research proposes using Big Data analytics to track Bitcoin transaction communications in tweets in order to discover a pattern. Hadoop platform MapReduce was used. The finding indicate that In the map step of the procedure, Hadoop's tokenize the dataset and parse them to the mapper where thirteen patterns were established and reduced to three patterns using the attributes previously stored data in the Hadoop context, one of which is the Emoji data that was left out in previous research discussions, but the text is only one piece of the puzzle on bitcoin transaction interaction, and the key part of it is “No certainty, only possibilities” in Bitcoin transactions

Abstract (sommario):
We created a new library of disordered patterns and disordered residues in the Protein Data Bank (PDB). To obtain such datasets, we clustered the PDB and obtained the groups of chains with different identities and marked disordered residues. We elaborated a new procedure for finding disordered patterns and created a new version of the library. This library includes three sets of patterns: unique patterns, patterns consisting of two kinds of amino acids, and homo-repeats. Using this database, the user can: (1) find homologues in the entire Protein Data Bank; (2) perform a statistical analysis of disordered residues in protein structures; (3) search for disordered patterns and homo-repeats; (4) search for disordered regions in different chains of the same protein; (5) download clusters of protein chains with different identity from our database and library of disordered patterns; and (6) observe 3D structure interactively using MView. A new library of disordered patterns will help improve the accuracy of predictions for residues that will be structured or unstructured in a given region.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Objective To identify dietary patterns in children up to thirty months of age and verify whether they are associated with parental dietary patterns, and socioeconomic and demographic characteristics. Methods This is a cross-sectional study with baseline data from a population-based study composed of 1,085 households from a representative sample of a metropolitan region in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The children's food intake was evaluated by two 24-hour recalls, and the dietary patterns were identified by principal component analysis stratified into two groups according to the children's age: 6 to 17 months; and 18 to 30 months. The explanatory variables collected by a structured questionnaire were socioeconomic and demographic characteristics, age at introduction of complementary foods, and parental dietary pattern. A Food Frequency Questionnaire was administered to assess parental dietary pattern, which was determined by principal component analysis. Multivariate linear regression estimated the effect of each explanatory variable on the children's dietary patterns. Results Three dietary patterns were identified in children aged 6-17 months (basic-mixed; mixed-plus; and milk-flours) and two dietary patterns were identified in children aged 18-30 months: basic-mixed and mixed-plus. Multivariate linear regression showed that complementary feeding (b=0.108; p=0.004) was positively associated with the basic-mixed dietary pattern, and family income (b=0.002; p£0.01), with the mixed-plus dietary pattern. A negative association was found between the traditional parental dietary pattern and children's mixed-plus pattern in children aged 6-17 months (b=0.152; p=0.006) and in children aged 18-30 months (b=0.152; p=0.016). In children aged up to 18 months, parental education level (b=0.368; p£0.01) was positively associated with the mixed-plus dietary pattern. Conclusion Family income, parental education level, and parental dietary patterns are associated with children's dietary patterns.

Abstract (sommario):
By the end of the nineties, the concept of design patterns became a hot topic among the human-computer interaction community and many workshops have been held on the subject within international HCI conferences. After more than twenty years, HCI patterns continue to attract the attention of researchers around the world, but still struggle to be more widely adopted as a practical design tool. To better understand this context, we conducted a systematic literature mapping including papers from the ACM CHI Conference and from other five reputed HCI conference series. Through the analysis of 50 papers, we were able to elicit regional aspects, common terminology, and best practices for the research of patterns in HCI. Finally, based on the findings of the literature mapping, we propose an HCI pattern development framework that can assist researchers and professionals in the process of developing practical and useful pattern languages in a structured way.

Abstract (sommario):
Recognition of architectural patterning among groups of structures at lowland Maya sites dating from the Classic period provides insights into the ways that residences and ritual complexes were organized. Each structured group arrangement, or Plaza Plan (PP), reveals an architectural grammar that provides the database enabling us to predict urban as well as rural settlement patterns. Wide variations in sizes among examples of residential PPs suggests that heterarchy was an important aspect of Classic Maya society. Examination of PP2 at Tikal indicates that a heterarchic pattern of organization existed. Heterarchy may relate to the fragility of the structure of lowland Maya kingship, and this may explain the gradual demise of states during the Terminal Classic and Postclassic periods and their replacement by re-emergent Maya chiefdoms.

Abstract (sommario):
Stripe patterns are ubiquitous in nature and everyday life. While the synthesis of these patterns has been thoroughly studied in the literature, their potential to control the mechanics of structured materials remains largely unexplored. In this work, we introduce Differentiable Stripe Patterns---a computational approach for automated design of physical surfaces structured with stripe-shaped bi-material distributions. Our method builds on the work by Knöppel and colleagues [2015] for generating globally-continuous and equally-spaced stripe patterns. To unlock the full potential of this design space, we propose a gradient-based optimization tool to automatically compute stripe patterns that best approximate macromechanical performance goals. Specifically, we propose a computational model that combines solid shell finite elements with XFEM for accurate and fully-differentiable modeling of elastic bi-material surfaces. To resolve non-uniqueness problems in the original method, we furthermore propose a robust formulation that yields unique and differentiable stripe patterns. We combine these components with equilibrium state derivatives into an end-to-end differentiable pipeline that enables inverse design of mechanical stripe patterns. We demonstrate our method on a diverse set of examples that illustrate the potential of stripe patterns as a design space for structured materials. Our simulation results are experimentally validated on physical prototypes.

Abstract (sommario):
We introduce a unique soft lithographic operation that exploits stamp roof collapse-induced gaps to selectively remove an alkanethiol self-assembled monolayer (SAM) on Au to generate surface patterns that are orders of magnitude smaller than structures on the original elastomer stamp. The smallest achieved feature dimension is 5 nm using a micrometer-scale structured stamp in a chemical lift-off lithography (CLL) process. Molecular patterns retained in the gaps between stamp features and their circumscribed or inscribed circles follow mathematical predictions, and their sizes can be tuned by altering the stamp structure dimensions, including height, pitch, and shape. These generated surface molecular patterns can function as biorecognition arrays or be transferred to the underneath Au layer for metallic structure creation. By combining CLL process with this gap phenomenon, soft material properties that are previously thought as demerits can be used to achieve sub-10 nm features in a straightforward sketch.
