Testo completoIn popular opinion political public relations practitioners have long been regarded as spin doctors. Their lane of actions is mostly viewed as propaganda and they are perceived as spin doctors who manipulate power-relations. The pervasive role of public relations in political campaigns cannot be denied as political actors rely on communication to reach their key stakeholders. While it can be used as an important tool that can mediate in these power relations, the facts remain in the case of this study that the political party campaign communication was rather reactive than strategic. The answer lays in the accurate application of the strategic nature and role of public relations. I believe that there is a strategic public relations role that is evident and has to be played in political party campaign communication. As a matter of fact, public relations strives to ensure an effective and efficient communication on behalf of its organisation. The purpose of this study was to explore the application of public relations principles in political parties’ campaign communication of the Democratic Alliance, in the context of three other political parties in a regional newspaper during the build-up to the 2014 South African general elections. Four distinct political parties were at the centre of this research, namely African National Congress, Democratic Alliance, Economic Freedom Fighters and Agang. Particular attention was given to the elite parties, African National Congress, and Democratic Alliance; the main environment of the study. It is true that political parties ‘communication with stakeholders reflects in essence public relations. Managing communication to promote the organisational agenda is to talk about issues important to both the public and the political party. This suggests that an effective political organisation will act on a two-way operation to build a common political position that influences public attitudes. Hence, a comparative case study was used as the strategy of inquiry. I conducted a content analysis of the political party campaign communication of the Democratic Alliance, covered in the Cape Times newspaper; as well as their election manifesto, to identify the public relations principles and strategies that were used. The daily newspapers were surveyed from January 8 to May 7, 2014. An overall of one hundred and forty-four related newspapers articles were analysed and formed the data for analysis. A close reading and counting of frequencies of varieties of themes in the newspaper revealed that the Democratic Alliance, as well as the African National congress, took a tactical and responsive approach, rather than a strategic and proactive approach, to their political party campaign communication. News coverage indicated that there was extensive counterpunching to other political parties ‘statuses, but very little promotion or management of the issues included in their election manifesto. Nkandla was the most controversial issue covered in the pre-election media coverage; while the proposed merger with AGANG; and the subsequent fall out was damaging to both political parties ‘reputation and relationship with voters. Therefore, more research on this topic needs to be undertaken, as public relations is crucial in translating public opinions to the organisation. In the political scope, this can serve as an attempt to adjust the socio-political environment to suit the political principles, as well as to help the political principles adjust to the environment by creating the right balance to mutual benefit an organisation and its publics that further ensures a real participatory democracy. Further studies should be done to investigate whether, the advocacy of the two-way symmetrical, as a way to central route to persuasion, along with the dialogical approach can impact on more effective decisions making, and ultimately create a more dynamic public sphere that seeks the resolution of socio-political conflicts. This new knowledge will lead to guidelines for public relations practitioners and can provide useful insights for political communication specialists.

Testo completoIn order to reach an organization’s ultimate objectives as increasing company productivity and overall profitability, it is a well-known fact that employee needs should be met through various human resources (HR) policies and practices. The literature shows that an efficient strategy of human resource management (HRM), which focuses on generating and maintaining a well-motivated workforce, is a key factor for organizational success. Thus, the main purpose of the present doctoral dissertation is to better understand the impact of strategic management of HR and High-Performance Work Practices (HPWP) on several critical business issues such as gaining competitive advantage, tackling absenteeism in the workplace, and improving job satisfaction. Firstly, developing and sustaining competitive advantage is one of the most significant factors to guarantee the survival of a company against its rivals. Many organizations attempt to generate a unique business strategy to get a competitive superiority. Some managers foresee the opportunity to gain competitive advantage through human capital, which depends on manager’s talent to utilize HR practices. Therefore, the first empirical chapter of this dissertation considers the theoretical framework and the role of Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM), which proposes a “tight-fit” between the management quality of human resources and business strategies. Analyzing a questionnaire from 2007 that covers the data for 401 Spanish manufacturing companies, our results provide evidence indicating that SHRM is a distinctive aspect of a firm to ensure gaining a sustainable competitive advantage. It is also significant to have the support of a higher intensity of industrial technology and a larger proportion of employees with higher education. Specifically, the large-sized firms with higher SHRM quality tend to have a better organizational performance trend. Moreover, it is a major challenge to reduce the absence rate as it has been an emerging issue and its effects are directly proportional to decreased productivity and profitability. Although many researchers have sought solutions, there is still a lack of European research with concrete conclusions regarding the impact of the interaction between union settings and high-performance work practices (HPWP) on absence. Hence, the second empirical chapter of this dissertation identifies the determinants of absenteeism focusing on the interaction between labor unions and HPWP components, applying a fractional logistic model on the data from Spanish manufacturing companies. The results suggest that the performance-based incentives and use of job rotation/enrichment decrease the likelihood of high absence at high levels of union influence. Besides, training time and adoption of flextime practice are found as significant workplace flexibilities to deal with absenteeism at medium and lower union-influence levels. Labor market competition also plays an important role in absenteeism. The probability of higher absence is positively related to the firm size, percentage of female workers, and percentage of part-time employees. Finally, many studies suggest that organizations with low level of job satisfaction tend to face with absenteeism, tardiness, grievances, turnover, and strikes more frequently, which causes a large decrease in performance and profitability. Low job satisfaction has been an emerging issue in challenging business environment, especially during economic crisis. The literature suggests that participative management -as an instrument that can be influenced by a manager’s talent and skills- improves job satisfaction. Therefore, the third empirical chapter of this dissertation investigates the indirect impact of participative management on job satisfaction, utilizing the European Working Conditions Survey 2010. It provides evidence that participative management style has a significant positive influence in employee job satisfaction through its intermediary determinants such as working environment and family-friendly company policies. In addition, we examine the differences in the marginal effects of participative management, interacting with gender-effects, across nine Euro-Mediterranean countries.

This thesis reflects on the issues and challenges large software product engineering managers face. Software is hard to engineer on a small scale, but at a larger scale, engineering and management tasks are even more difficult. In the context of software product line evolution, the goal of this work is to look at current managing practice, through the lens of Systems Thinking as well as my own experience. We develop a System Dynamics model to operationalize the notions examined here and run a variety of experiments representative of real situations, from which we learn some lessons and recommend policies that engineering leaders may use to manage large-scale software development organizations. During the course of this research, we found that the model developed intuitively matched experiences in the software industry. Product line engineering and tighter deadlines force software producers to require more accurate control of the production capability of their development organization. In the context of many release cycles and multiple simultaneously active releases, we present some findings about scheduling of the workload, which the engineering manager may leverage to make decisions about the allocation of work. The research presented here from the point of view of the producers of software can help other stakeholders in the software ecosystem understand the challenges these organizations face and the reasoning behind choices made by these providers.

This dissertation consists of three essays on strategic and tactical issues in product design. The first essay presents a dynamic investment game in which firms that are initially identical develop assets which are specialized to different market segments. The model assumes there are increasing returns to investment in a segment, for example, due to word-of-mouth or learning curve effects. In equilibrium, firms that are only slightly different focus all of their investment in different segments, causing small random differences to expand into large permanent differences. Even though firms do not cooperate and do not make threats to punish each other, in the long run they divide the market, reaching the same outcome that they would if they cooperated to maximize joint profits. This second essay develops a model in which an incumbent has expertise in an old business format (e.g., running a full service airline), and a new firm enters the market with the possibility of using a new business format (e.g., running a "no frills" airline). Firms play a dynamic investment game in which the incumbent can invest in the new format and the entrant can invest in either format. If brand and format preferences are strong, and if it is easy to implement a format, then a firm already using one format does not invest in the other format, since such an attack would be met with swift retaliation. In this case, the entrant invests in the new format, while the incumbent avoids investing in order to retain the threat of investment as a punishment mechanism. The third essay shows that improved accuracy in conjoint analysis has important strategic implications. Even if two models provide unbiased part-worths, competitive game theory shows that the more accurate model (with lower error variance in an HB CBC model) implies that differentiation from competitors is more profitable. On the other hand, a less accurate model implies that each firm should forego differentiation and choose feature levels that provide customers the greatest utility (adjusting for marginal cost). I illustrate the theory by varying accuracy in a student-apparel application.

Testo completoThis study has been conducted with the purpose of understanding how strategic issues influenced the performance of global technological innovation projects in Brazilian multinational companies. More specifically, I tried to identify those issues that have been present in the selected projects, which performance dimensions have been affected and to what extent, and how executing organizations have dealt with the related issues. The proposed model suggests that the performance of global technological innovation projects in multinational companies is affected by project issues, R&D issues, headquarters issues, subsidiary issues, industry issues and external issues. This model has been created as a result of the theory review encompassing multinational companies, project management and issues management. The field research has been conducted in two steps, being the first qualitative and the second quantitative. The first phase has been characterizaed by the exploratory approach and carried out through the application of the case study method to two organizations. The second phase employed the descriptive approach and involved the quantitative analysis of 36 global technological innovation projects executed by Brazilian multinational companies. Results suggest high degree of presence for R&D issues, industry issues, and external issues; moderate degree of presence for project issues; and low degree of presence for headquarters issues and subsidiary issues. Findings also showed that strategic issues affected the following project performance dimensions: business results, organizations capabilities, marketing focus and synergy among organizational units. The business results dimenstion has been influenced by project issues, R&D issues, headquarters issues, subsidiary issues, industry issues and external issues. The organizations capabilities dimension has been affected by project issues, subsidiary issues, industry issues and external issues. The marketing focus dimension has been impacted by R&D issues, headquarters issues, and industry issues. The synergy among organizational units dimension has been influenced by Project issues and subsidiary issues. Regarding how companies have dealt with strategic issues, I have found the need for a formal but flexible process where the project leader is given authority to resolve the identified issues.

Testo completoENGLISH ABSTRACT: The development of new business models in the emerging Business-to-Business electronic transacting arena is demanding answers to a new set of questions being asked of businesses. Amongst the issues identified are the viability and sustainability of these new business models and their applicability in addressing identified business problems, especially those related to procurement. In assessing the benefits, obstacles and opportunities for procurement a clearer picture emerge about the value of these marketplaces. The value of marketplaces is analysed using Porter's value chain discussion and other research that highlights value creation in the digital age. Obstacles to value creation are also discussed using Zwass's hierarchy to understand the marketplace architecture. Discussing the marketplace innovation at three distinct levels assist with the definition of key challenges, such as telecommunication infrastructure, SME development, legal, security, taxation, and technology standards. Also discussed are the issues that revolve around the various business models, their uniqueness and their ability to unlock value. The comparative matrix developed in the study report confirms that competition in narrowly defined areas is intensifying and will result in a shakeout with a few marketplaces remaining in South Africa.
Kongoro, Engelhardt Zevarua. "Strategy formulation and the Internet : what are the issues? : a critical literature review". Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/53066.
Testo completoENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study has reviewed the current literature and debates on the relevance of conventional strategy formulation given the turbulence in the business environment. Conventional strategy formulation is under attack as a result of the advancement of disruptive technologies such as the Internet. Many have gone further, and referred to this digitization of the business environment as a "new" economy. This study has reviewed a range of literature from academicians as well as practitioners on the relevance of strategy in an Internet environment. Many of the authors, while admitting that real-time fine-tuning of some of the analytical tools currently in use was warranted, still feel that most of the conventional concepts still apply. Businessesare still affected by the same competitive forces of rivalry, substitutes, new entrants and the bargaining powers of suppliers and buyers. Organisations must still look for distinctiveness for them to have a sustainable competitive edge over their rivals. This study has reviewed the impact of the Internet on industry structure, the value chain, and the implications for competitive advantage. The conclusion that can be gleaned from these reviews is that doing business on the Internet will not save businessesfrom failure if they are not applying the correct strategies. The convergence of views appears to be that there is nothing new about the "new" economy, but the technological platform created by the Internet presents major opportunities that can be used in a hybrid form of online practices such as online order processing with established models of brick and mortar such as warehousing. While the study did not intend to produce new or validate existing empirical insights, it is has recommended that the Internet must be used as an enabler and integrated within existing businessprocesses.

Testo completoThese results provide important practical information and establish a range of relevant implications for the Australian manufacturing sector and its future competitiveness. This study also provides a basis for the continued development and distillation of procurement flexibility measures. One of the interesting outcomes of the Supplier Manufacturer Procurement Flexibility (ProcFlex) dimensions and the implication for overall Supply Chain Management (SCM) objectives and strateges is that ProcFlex is cumulative. Any inflexibilities and constrictions, like excess and lack of inventory, in procurement activities is accumulated and increases along the supply chain. It is like a 'stock-whip' effect that runs from suppliers to customers as to the reverse of the 'bull whip' effect.

Testo completoBased on the idea that the subsidiaries of a company are able to call into question the decisions of senior management (the parent company), the holistic approach developed in this study assumes that an organization can be a “being”, implying thereby that the information in its possession is external to the individuals who compose it. This raises the question of whether it is conceivable to ignore the individual in such a relationship of domination. This thesis proposes a model based on the results which show the difficult exclusion of the individual in a meta-organizational context (in which members would be organizations and not individuals). Along these same lines, the organization’s human dynamics are at the heart of this research: there exists by and through the individual a dynamic resulting from actual activity that allows the organization to live by itself, while also allowing prescribe to evolve. Although the results show that the organization is not a dead and strengthless object, and it has the opportunity to live by itself, it is the individuals who —through their conditional commitments— allow the separate existence of an organizational structure’s intra-consciousness, which imposes rights and obligations. In this perspective, the proposed model aims to draw the structures of abstract social reality (referred as Entity X in this study) by showing the strengths and organizational constraints that weigh on individual members, while raising the human capacity to emerge from the structures prescribed by the sensemaking of links and transversal structures for cooperation that originate from the actual activity
