Abstract (sommario):
In recent years public sector organisations in New South Wales have been subjected to changes in their operating environments. Changes have included micro-economic reforms by Government and changes in stakeholders' expectations of how public sector organisations manage their affairs. The need to deal with the increasing number and diversity of issues arising, has motivated public sector managers to become increasingly involved in strategic management. The focus of this research was to study how strategic issues were processed within the context of their approach to strategic management. Strategic issue management has been proposed as an appropriate management system for use in conditions of moderate to high levels of environmental turbulence as a means to providing a mechanism for real time response to emerging issues. Three of the four organisations in the study indicated a progressive increase in perceptions of environmental turbulence over a six year period to points mid way between the 'Changing' and 'Discontinuous' levels on the Ansoff and McDonnell (1990) environmental turbulence scale. Research findings indicted that all four public sector organisations undertake a form of strategic issue management which is separate to the periodic strategic planning cycle. In answer to the criticism of the theoretical void which is seen to exist in linking organisational response to changes in the environment, theoretical models were developed for the Sensing, Deciding and Executing functions of the processing dimension of Ansoff's (1987) proposed paradigm of emerging strategic behaviour. The models provide the framework for tracking how eight strategic issues were processed in four public sector organisations. Field research-was conducted over a fifteen month period collecting both secondary and primary data. A case study research methodology was developed for the project following a review of the relevant literature. There were clear indications that the Sensing, Deciding and Executing functions were performed and that the issues under study passed through numerous phases during their processing cycles. The interconnected and iterative nature of issue processing across the Sensing, Deciding and Executing phases were demonstrated in the research findings.

Pambou, Renestine Itoumba. "A comparison of public relations principles applied by political parties in campaign communication during a democratic election". Thesis, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11838/3093.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (MTech (Public Relations Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2017
In popular opinion political public relations practitioners have long been regarded as spin doctors. Their lane of actions is mostly viewed as propaganda and they are perceived as spin doctors who manipulate power-relations. The pervasive role of public relations in political campaigns cannot be denied as political actors rely on communication to reach their key stakeholders. While it can be used as an important tool that can mediate in these power relations, the facts remain in the case of this study that the political party campaign communication was rather reactive than strategic. The answer lays in the accurate application of the strategic nature and role of public relations. I believe that there is a strategic public relations role that is evident and has to be played in political party campaign communication. As a matter of fact, public relations strives to ensure an effective and efficient communication on behalf of its organisation. The purpose of this study was to explore the application of public relations principles in political parties’ campaign communication of the Democratic Alliance, in the context of three other political parties in a regional newspaper during the build-up to the 2014 South African general elections. Four distinct political parties were at the centre of this research, namely African National Congress, Democratic Alliance, Economic Freedom Fighters and Agang. Particular attention was given to the elite parties, African National Congress, and Democratic Alliance; the main environment of the study. It is true that political parties ‘communication with stakeholders reflects in essence public relations. Managing communication to promote the organisational agenda is to talk about issues important to both the public and the political party. This suggests that an effective political organisation will act on a two-way operation to build a common political position that influences public attitudes. Hence, a comparative case study was used as the strategy of inquiry. I conducted a content analysis of the political party campaign communication of the Democratic Alliance, covered in the Cape Times newspaper; as well as their election manifesto, to identify the public relations principles and strategies that were used. The daily newspapers were surveyed from January 8 to May 7, 2014. An overall of one hundred and forty-four related newspapers articles were analysed and formed the data for analysis. A close reading and counting of frequencies of varieties of themes in the newspaper revealed that the Democratic Alliance, as well as the African National congress, took a tactical and responsive approach, rather than a strategic and proactive approach, to their political party campaign communication. News coverage indicated that there was extensive counterpunching to other political parties ‘statuses, but very little promotion or management of the issues included in their election manifesto. Nkandla was the most controversial issue covered in the pre-election media coverage; while the proposed merger with AGANG; and the subsequent fall out was damaging to both political parties ‘reputation and relationship with voters. Therefore, more research on this topic needs to be undertaken, as public relations is crucial in translating public opinions to the organisation. In the political scope, this can serve as an attempt to adjust the socio-political environment to suit the political principles, as well as to help the political principles adjust to the environment by creating the right balance to mutual benefit an organisation and its publics that further ensures a real participatory democracy. Further studies should be done to investigate whether, the advocacy of the two-way symmetrical, as a way to central route to persuasion, along with the dialogical approach can impact on more effective decisions making, and ultimately create a more dynamic public sphere that seeks the resolution of socio-political conflicts. This new knowledge will lead to guidelines for public relations practitioners and can provide useful insights for political communication specialists.

Abstract (sommario):
The strategic management literature makes frequent references to the need for directing the firm's responses to perceived opportunities or threats in the environment. The purpose of this study is to determine if the top executives from different firms view an important environmental development differently, in terms of it being an opportunity or threat, and, if so, do these perceptions relate to organizational factors and to personal characteristics of the top executive? A model is proposed and includes organizational strategy, organizational structure, executive locus of control and behavioral response repertoire. Fourteen operational hypotheses are formulated. Thirty-six top executives of firms in the metalworking machinery and equipment industry are polled for their opinions of flexible manufacturing systems (PMS) developments. PMS refers to technology that is only now becoming available and consists of the integration of computer facilities and robotics mechanisms. Predecessors of PMS include numerically controlled machinery (NCM), computer aided design (CAD) and computer aided manufacturing (CAM). The effect of locus of control on PMS perceptions is not analyzed because of measurement problems. Correlation analyses reveal that organizational strategy, some aspects of organizational structure, and certain characteristics of the top executive are related to PMS perceptions at close-to-significant levels. Cluster analysis is applied to the data on strategy and structure to identify groups of firms on the basis of the similarity in their strategy-structure features. Executives' perceptions of PMS are compared across groups, and certain combinations of strategy type and structural characteristics relate to more opportunistic perceptions, although not at significant levels. The results of the statistical findings are discussed and an interpretation offered. Suggestions for future research on strategic issue perceptions are proposed.

Fichtner, Jason J. "Distribution Tables and Federal Tax Policy: A Scoring Index as a Method for Evaluation". Diss., Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/29422.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Distribution tables have become ubiquitous to the tax policy debates surrounding major legislative initiatives to change tax law at the federal level. The fairness of any proposed change to federal tax policy has become one of the most highlighted components of tax policy discussions. The presentation of tax data within distribution tables can hide or omit important information that is required in order to effectively evaluate the merits of any tax legislation. Many producers of distribution tables show only the information necessary to present their policy preferences in the best possible light. The different economic assumptions and presentations of data used by the various groups that release distribution tables have the inherent consequence of providing the public with numerous tables that are often used as political ammunition to influence and shape debate. The purpose of this research is to contribute to the tax policy research literature by exploring the limitations and biases inherent in specific designs of tax distribution tables and in specific methodological approaches to tax distribution analysis. This is done by means of a systematic examination of how different designs and methodologies provide an incomplete picture of a proposed change to federal tax policy. By comparing distribution tables as used by different groups to provide alternative perspectives of various tax proposals, the research shows how the use of tax distribution tables often provides misleading results about the impact of proposed tax legislation in order to influence and shape the issues surrounding a proposed change to federal tax policy. A method for evaluating tax distribution tables is proposed which highlights the deficiencies of design and methodology which characterize the present use of tax distribution tables. An index of questions is provided as part of this research project to serve as a new tool of policy analysis, an index termed the "Tax Distribution Table Scoring Index" (TDTSI). The TDTSI will assist in balancing the different perspectives presented via tax distribution tables by identifying the biases and limitations associated with different methodologies and presentations of data.

Abstract (sommario):
Domestic companies are increasingly trying to expand to become globalised firms or multinational corporations (MNCs). Existing business strategies, visions and information systems need to be re-analysed and perhaps reconstructed to fulfil the business goals, operations and characteristics of the global organisation. Information technology is a critical element in enabling globalisation, and enterprises need to identify and consider information technology and system management issues. Depending on the structure of multinational organisations, different emphases need to be placed on issues such as business information systems management, information technology management, people management, end-user management, and culture. A global transition issue priority model is constructed to support the following hypothesis: the global transition issue priority varies depending on the type of organisational structure. With the assistance of this model, MNCs are able to pinpoint the emphasis of issues in preparing the globalisation process according to their organisational structures. Surevsy were onducted to investigate the priority of issues, and outcomes suggest that the emphasis of each issue class is dependent on the type of organisational structure. The main contribution of this research is to develop a global information systems management priority model that will assist MNCs in preparing the strategic plan in the global transition process, and develop a global transition framework for enterprises which will facilitate construction of their global information systems.

Abstract (sommario):
In order to reach an organization’s ultimate objectives as increasing company productivity and overall profitability, it is a well-known fact that employee needs should be met through various human resources (HR) policies and practices. The literature shows that an efficient strategy of human resource management (HRM), which focuses on generating and maintaining a well-motivated workforce, is a key factor for organizational success. Thus, the main purpose of the present doctoral dissertation is to better understand the impact of strategic management of HR and High-Performance Work Practices (HPWP) on several critical business issues such as gaining competitive advantage, tackling absenteeism in the workplace, and improving job satisfaction. Firstly, developing and sustaining competitive advantage is one of the most significant factors to guarantee the survival of a company against its rivals. Many organizations attempt to generate a unique business strategy to get a competitive superiority. Some managers foresee the opportunity to gain competitive advantage through human capital, which depends on manager’s talent to utilize HR practices. Therefore, the first empirical chapter of this dissertation considers the theoretical framework and the role of Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM), which proposes a “tight-fit” between the management quality of human resources and business strategies. Analyzing a questionnaire from 2007 that covers the data for 401 Spanish manufacturing companies, our results provide evidence indicating that SHRM is a distinctive aspect of a firm to ensure gaining a sustainable competitive advantage. It is also significant to have the support of a higher intensity of industrial technology and a larger proportion of employees with higher education. Specifically, the large-sized firms with higher SHRM quality tend to have a better organizational performance trend. Moreover, it is a major challenge to reduce the absence rate as it has been an emerging issue and its effects are directly proportional to decreased productivity and profitability. Although many researchers have sought solutions, there is still a lack of European research with concrete conclusions regarding the impact of the interaction between union settings and high-performance work practices (HPWP) on absence. Hence, the second empirical chapter of this dissertation identifies the determinants of absenteeism focusing on the interaction between labor unions and HPWP components, applying a fractional logistic model on the data from Spanish manufacturing companies. The results suggest that the performance-based incentives and use of job rotation/enrichment decrease the likelihood of high absence at high levels of union influence. Besides, training time and adoption of flextime practice are found as significant workplace flexibilities to deal with absenteeism at medium and lower union-influence levels. Labor market competition also plays an important role in absenteeism. The probability of higher absence is positively related to the firm size, percentage of female workers, and percentage of part-time employees. Finally, many studies suggest that organizations with low level of job satisfaction tend to face with absenteeism, tardiness, grievances, turnover, and strikes more frequently, which causes a large decrease in performance and profitability. Low job satisfaction has been an emerging issue in challenging business environment, especially during economic crisis. The literature suggests that participative management -as an instrument that can be influenced by a manager’s talent and skills- improves job satisfaction. Therefore, the third empirical chapter of this dissertation investigates the indirect impact of participative management on job satisfaction, utilizing the European Working Conditions Survey 2010. It provides evidence that participative management style has a significant positive influence in employee job satisfaction through its intermediary determinants such as working environment and family-friendly company policies. In addition, we examine the differences in the marginal effects of participative management, interacting with gender-effects, across nine Euro-Mediterranean countries.

This thesis reflects on the issues and challenges large software product engineering managers face. Software is hard to engineer on a small scale, but at a larger scale, engineering and management tasks are even more difficult. In the context of software product line evolution, the goal of this work is to look at current managing practice, through the lens of Systems Thinking as well as my own experience. We develop a System Dynamics model to operationalize the notions examined here and run a variety of experiments representative of real situations, from which we learn some lessons and recommend policies that engineering leaders may use to manage large-scale software development organizations. During the course of this research, we found that the model developed intuitively matched experiences in the software industry. Product line engineering and tighter deadlines force software producers to require more accurate control of the production capability of their development organization. In the context of many release cycles and multiple simultaneously active releases, we present some findings about scheduling of the workload, which the engineering manager may leverage to make decisions about the allocation of work. The research presented here from the point of view of the producers of software can help other stakeholders in the software ecosystem understand the challenges these organizations face and the reasoning behind choices made by these providers.

Abstract (sommario):
Corporate governance issues resulting from bad governance, fraudulent activities, insider abuse, and corruption have attracted the attention of shareholders and regulators in the banking industry. The financial crisis that erupted from the United States affected the financial institutions of both developed and developing countries, among which Nigerian banks belong. The Central Bank of Nigeria removed 8 managing directors and executive directors due to bad governance, nonperforming loans of 61%, and toxic assets of $13.3 billion; the Central Bank injected 620 billion naira into the banks. The purpose of this multiple case study was to develop an understanding of corporate governance strategies needed to ensure regulatory compliance and enhance financial performance from the perspective of senior management of the regulatory authority and corporate financial leaders. Agency theory served as the conceptual framework for the study. The population for this study was10 senior regulatory leaders and corporate financial leaders in Nigeria. The data sources were semistructured interviews, research notes, codes of corporate governance, and financial reports of banks. Member checking was used to improve the credibility and trustworthiness of the data. After compiling, disassembling, reassembling, and coding the data, 5 themes including the need for: improvement on compliance to corporate governance regulations; effective board governance; training education and awareness on best practices, strategic risk management and internal control; and strategic and effective leadership. Potential implications for social change may include knowledge for investors and the public, who have increasingly relied on financial services in Nigeria to support personal and business goals to identify banks with best practices.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study is to compare social media's role in the proactive crisis communication planning in two administrations, two companies and two non-profit organizations. A qualitative comparative study method has been used and people familiar with social media and crisis communications work from each business has been interviewed. The interviews have been transcribed and analyzed to discover the opinions and reasoning about how businesses work with proactive crisis communication and the role they give social media. The interviews were analyzed based on selected theories and previous research in strategic crisis communications, where issues management and crisis communication plans have a significant role. Also research on the pros and cons of social media and crisis communications channels have been used. The results showed that all areas of crisis communication plans are designed in a reactive way for how to act when a crisis has already occurred. However all operations conducts external environment monitoring intelligence and say that they are trying to be proactive in crisis situations by building relationships and addressing the highlighted problems. All activities except LKAB stated that they work a lot with social media to build relationships and address problems. Businesses also see social medias speed and ability to reach many people as a great advantage. However, they also point out that the speed can be a risk when rumors and misinformation can spread quickly. It appears that businesses are seeing more benefits of social media than disadvantages. They also indicate that there is an advantage to using traditional media as a crisis communications channel when they have an immense impact that social media can´t match. All but LKAB are positive about the use of social media and intend to use them in combination with other channels in crisis situations, which means that social media is given a major role in relation to other channels. Their work with external environment monitoring and addressing the issues they highlighted suggests that they try to be proactive. However, it is worth pointing out that all defined crises as external events and their reactive crisis communications plans nonetheless suggests that they did not put a clear emphasis on actively work to proactively prevent crises to arise.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The quest towards sustainable development, both nationally and globally, puts the construction industry in the foreground as the main consumer of natural resources. The industry has profound economic, social and environmental impacts. Sustainable construction is one of the most important challenges faced by the construction industry today. In the UK, sustainability is being driven and enforced by the government through stringent fiscal policies and regulations, voluntary initiatives combined with naming and shaming strategies. Stakeholders are becoming more aware of the global challenges and are using their power to exert pressure on companies. Increasingly, construction clients are demanding that their business partners submit: their corporate sustainability policies with tender packages to demonstrate their performance in dealing with opportunities and risks stemming from economic, environmental and social aspect of sustainability. However, the lack of understanding of the concept and its practical application has been a recurrent problem. The conceptual confusion; its vagueness and ambiguity, the complexity of the myriad of challenges and fluidity of the sustainability concept, compounded with the myopic attitude of the industry, lack of clear-cut and practical framework are causing frustration in the construction industry. Consequently, a number of sustainability management frameworks have been proposed. There are probably more than one hundred frameworks for sustainable business strategy. However, the majority of these are either complicated to implement or lack sound theoretical base, effective change management and completeness. These, therefore, do not make the situation any easier. Many are still baffled as to what they should do and how they should go about affecting change. Corporate sustainability in the construction industry is a challenge to many companies. The industry is still under-performing in each of the key themes of sustainable construction and this has lead to a 'blame culture' where each sector of the industry allocates responsibility for its current failings to others (CIRIA C563, 2001). Such a situation poses a need for a comprehensive, practical and easy to use tool that would aid the implementation and management of sustainability at the core of business process. The tool will complement the existing frameworks, which breaks down the strategic and management issues into manageable components. This will enable companies to focus on individual areas and identify actions needed to facilitate change. The problem is that such a tool is virtually non-existent. The main focal point of this research is the development of a tool to facilitate the implementation, management and integration of sustainability issues at the strategic level and promote wider uptake of the concept in the construction industry. This requires a thorough understanding of the concepts of sustainable development, sustainable construction and related issues as well as drivers, benefits, barriers and enablers for achieving corporate sustainability. It also demands an examination of existing management frameworks and collation of case studies from the early adopters to establish critical factors for strategic and management issues involved in achieving corporate sustainability. Through, diverse research epistemologies (quantitative, qualitative and triangulation methods), the research established four main critical factors and thirty-six sub-critical factors for achieving corporate sustainability. These factors underpinned the development of a web-based prototype software (ConPass). This thesis presents the development and evaluation ConPass Model and the prototype software.

This dissertation consists of three essays on strategic and tactical issues in product design. The first essay presents a dynamic investment game in which firms that are initially identical develop assets which are specialized to different market segments. The model assumes there are increasing returns to investment in a segment, for example, due to word-of-mouth or learning curve effects. In equilibrium, firms that are only slightly different focus all of their investment in different segments, causing small random differences to expand into large permanent differences. Even though firms do not cooperate and do not make threats to punish each other, in the long run they divide the market, reaching the same outcome that they would if they cooperated to maximize joint profits. This second essay develops a model in which an incumbent has expertise in an old business format (e.g., running a full service airline), and a new firm enters the market with the possibility of using a new business format (e.g., running a "no frills" airline). Firms play a dynamic investment game in which the incumbent can invest in the new format and the entrant can invest in either format. If brand and format preferences are strong, and if it is easy to implement a format, then a firm already using one format does not invest in the other format, since such an attack would be met with swift retaliation. In this case, the entrant invests in the new format, while the incumbent avoids investing in order to retain the threat of investment as a punishment mechanism. The third essay shows that improved accuracy in conjoint analysis has important strategic implications. Even if two models provide unbiased part-worths, competitive game theory shows that the more accurate model (with lower error variance in an HB CBC model) implies that differentiation from competitors is more profitable. On the other hand, a less accurate model implies that each firm should forego differentiation and choose feature levels that provide customers the greatest utility (adjusting for marginal cost). I illustrate the theory by varying accuracy in a student-apparel application.

Abstract (sommario):
This study is premised on the assumption that because of increased globalisation the trend towards strategic alliances is going to increase in the 21st century. This is evident in the phenomenal growth towards the establishment of alliances the world over despite high failure rates. The study also makes an important assumption that a major cause of alliance failure is managerial in nature and therefore relates to the task performed by alliance managers.Whilst research in the West has attempted to focus on such failings, few researchers have attempted to understand the state of alliances in developing country contexts as well as the reasons for the lack of their successes or otherwise. This study therefore seeks to fill this gap by exploring the managerial issues surrounding alliance management in a developing country, Papua New Guinea. It was found that alliance managers in countries such as Papua New Guinea faced managerial challenges similar to those in their counterparts in developing countries. However, the similary ends there. The research demonstrated that governmental and socio-cultural factors predominate in the national and local environments. It also found that resource deficiencies made alliances highly susceptible to misalignment in strategic intent and structure.Several other findings are discussed in detail. The research resulted in the development of a holistic approach to the study and management of strategic alliances.

Litt, Barri A. "An Examination of Accounting and Auditing Issues Related to Strategic Environmental Initiatives". FIU Digital Commons, 2011. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/421.

Abstract (sommario):
Although corporate environmental accountability is receiving unprecedented attention in the United States from policy makers, the capital market, and the public at large, extant research is limited in its examination of the implications of strategic corporate environmental initiatives on accounting and auditing. The purpose of my dissertation is to address these implications by examining the association between firm environmental initiatives and audit fees, capital expenditures, and earnings quality using multivariate regression analysis. I find that firms engaged in more strategic environmental initiatives tend to have significantly higher audit fees and capital expenditures, and significantly lower levels of earnings manipulation measured using discretionary accruals. These results support the notion that auditors do recognize the importance of environmental initiatives when conducting the year-end financial statement audit, an idea that positively reflects upon the auditor’s monitoring role. The results also demonstrate the increased amount of capital resources required to participate in strategic environmental initiatives, an anecdotal notion that had yet to be empirically supported. This empirical support provides valuable insights on how environmental initiatives materially impact corporate financial statements. Finally, my results extend the extant literature by demonstrating that the superior financial performance reported by environmentally active firms is less likely driven by earnings manipulation by management, and by implication, more likely a result of real economic gains. Taken together, my dissertation establishes a strong and timely foundation for current and future research to explore corporate environmental initiatives in the United States and globally, a topic increasingly gaining momentum in today’s more eco-conscious world.

Abstract (sommario):
This study has been conducted with the purpose of understanding how strategic issues influenced the performance of global technological innovation projects in Brazilian multinational companies. More specifically, I tried to identify those issues that have been present in the selected projects, which performance dimensions have been affected and to what extent, and how executing organizations have dealt with the related issues. The proposed model suggests that the performance of global technological innovation projects in multinational companies is affected by project issues, R&D issues, headquarters issues, subsidiary issues, industry issues and external issues. This model has been created as a result of the theory review encompassing multinational companies, project management and issues management. The field research has been conducted in two steps, being the first qualitative and the second quantitative. The first phase has been characterizaed by the exploratory approach and carried out through the application of the case study method to two organizations. The second phase employed the descriptive approach and involved the quantitative analysis of 36 global technological innovation projects executed by Brazilian multinational companies. Results suggest high degree of presence for R&D issues, industry issues, and external issues; moderate degree of presence for project issues; and low degree of presence for headquarters issues and subsidiary issues. Findings also showed that strategic issues affected the following project performance dimensions: business results, organizations capabilities, marketing focus and synergy among organizational units. The business results dimenstion has been influenced by project issues, R&D issues, headquarters issues, subsidiary issues, industry issues and external issues. The organizations capabilities dimension has been affected by project issues, subsidiary issues, industry issues and external issues. The marketing focus dimension has been impacted by R&D issues, headquarters issues, and industry issues. The synergy among organizational units dimension has been influenced by Project issues and subsidiary issues. Regarding how companies have dealt with strategic issues, I have found the need for a formal but flexible process where the project leader is given authority to resolve the identified issues.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this Masters thesis was to explore risk management issues and strategies from the perspectives of key stakeholders of large-scale sporting events using a comparative case study of two Canadian sporting events---the ISU (International Skating Union) 2006 World Figure Skating Championships and the U-20 FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association ) World Cup Canada 2007. A new definition of risk management was proposed as the proactive process that involves assessing all possible risks to the events and its stakeholders by strategically avoiding, preventing, reducing, diffusing, re-allocating, legalizing, and building/managing relationships to mitigate those identified risks. The following categories of risk issues were identified: environment, financial, human resources, infrastructure, interdependence, legacy, media, operations, organizing, participation, political, relationships, sport, threats and visibility. Stakeholders used a variety of strategies to deal with risk in large-scale sporting events. Strategies that emerged during this research fell within the following categories: avoidance, diffusion, legal, re-allocation, prevention, reduction and relationships.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The development of new business models in the emerging Business-to-Business electronic transacting arena is demanding answers to a new set of questions being asked of businesses. Amongst the issues identified are the viability and sustainability of these new business models and their applicability in addressing identified business problems, especially those related to procurement. In assessing the benefits, obstacles and opportunities for procurement a clearer picture emerge about the value of these marketplaces. The value of marketplaces is analysed using Porter's value chain discussion and other research that highlights value creation in the digital age. Obstacles to value creation are also discussed using Zwass's hierarchy to understand the marketplace architecture. Discussing the marketplace innovation at three distinct levels assist with the definition of key challenges, such as telecommunication infrastructure, SME development, legal, security, taxation, and technology standards. Also discussed are the issues that revolve around the various business models, their uniqueness and their ability to unlock value. The comparative matrix developed in the study report confirms that competition in narrowly defined areas is intensifying and will result in a shakeout with a few marketplaces remaining in South Africa.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study has reviewed the current literature and debates on the relevance of conventional strategy formulation given the turbulence in the business environment. Conventional strategy formulation is under attack as a result of the advancement of disruptive technologies such as the Internet. Many have gone further, and referred to this digitization of the business environment as a "new" economy. This study has reviewed a range of literature from academicians as well as practitioners on the relevance of strategy in an Internet environment. Many of the authors, while admitting that real-time fine-tuning of some of the analytical tools currently in use was warranted, still feel that most of the conventional concepts still apply. Businessesare still affected by the same competitive forces of rivalry, substitutes, new entrants and the bargaining powers of suppliers and buyers. Organisations must still look for distinctiveness for them to have a sustainable competitive edge over their rivals. This study has reviewed the impact of the Internet on industry structure, the value chain, and the implications for competitive advantage. The conclusion that can be gleaned from these reviews is that doing business on the Internet will not save businessesfrom failure if they are not applying the correct strategies. The convergence of views appears to be that there is nothing new about the "new" economy, but the technological platform created by the Internet presents major opportunities that can be used in a hybrid form of online practices such as online order processing with established models of brick and mortar such as warehousing. While the study did not intend to produce new or validate existing empirical insights, it is has recommended that the Internet must be used as an enabler and integrated within existing businessprocesses.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is concerned with the patterns of work and employment within foreign owned multinationals operating in the UK's consumer electronics industry. The focus is on evaluating current debates on whether there has been any changes or shifts in relations between capital and labour, which constitute a new paradigm. There is a growing set of literature which argues that Japanese capitalism is providing new paradigms for work relations which result in highly cooperative associations between worker and employer. Much of the evidence for such claims comes from studies of Japanese owned plants operating in the UK and US. However, there is little depth to such studies, which mainly consist of interviews with managers or questionnaires. Through selection of a case study methodology and by critically assessing the nature of Japanese managerial techniques, this research challenges fundamentally the 'Japanisation' school. Moreover, the thesis provides contradictory findings concerning 'flexibility'. More tentatively, the thesis contributes to debates on labour segmentation based on gender, and on the wider debate around 'new industrial relations'. The research was based on four case studies, three Japanese and one European, but not British, owned plants of large multinational corporations. The headquarters of the Japanese plants were also visited, as were plants in Japan. More than 50 taped interviews were conducted with over 100 managers, workers and trade union officials from the UK and Japan. In addition, factory visits were made at each plant more than once and often with a almost a year between visits. The main findings are that the plants did not display any of thefeatures attributed to 'Japanisation', except with the marginal exception of the European plant. Techniques, such as 'just-in-time' and direct participation between employees and management to the exclusion of unions, were not in evidence. Instead, management was concerned with maximising production runs, minimising change and constantly trying to control workers, who were themselves conscious that for most of them, their work was repetitive boring and, especially for the women, deskilled.

Waritimi, Ekpobomene. "Stakeholder management in practice : evidence from the Nigerian oil and gas industry". Thesis, Durham University, 2012. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/3558/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Stakeholder management relates to how business organisations manage their relationships not only with their market stakeholders, but also with their nonmarket stakeholders. It requires firms and business managers to identify and develop effective strategies to balance the interests of many diverse groups or constituents. This requirement has of course been judged to be impractical by those who uphold narrow traditional views about how a firm operates; and is unsupported by those who believe that asking managers to focus on the interests or concerns of groups of constituents that do not directly contribute to the economic achievements or strategic objectives of a firm, is a distraction and an attempt to derail corporate objectives. However, in spite of the criticisms levelled against the notion of stakeholder management, firms can no longer ignore the fact that there are constituents who can affect, and are affected by their business objectives. The aim of this research is to illustrate the practical implications of stakeholder management by exploring how multinational oil corporations operating in the Nigerian oil and gas industry manage their relationships with nonmarket stakeholders; such as the local communities who are affected by their operations. In order to achieve the aims of this research, a case study approach has been adopted; the case study companies include Shell Petroleum Development Company (Shell), Total Exploration and Production (Total), and the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (AGIP). Furthermore, to achieve a balanced perspective regarding the stakeholder management practices of the oil companies, the research incorporates the views of stakeholders from local communities, and those from non-governmental organisations (NGOs). A mixed methods research strategy is employed in the data collection and analysis process to achieve not just triangulation, but also to assist in the comprehension of the research findings. The research established that each of the companies being studied has employed different stakeholder management strategies in order to manage their relationships with the local communities. The strategies employed by the companies, however, appear not to address the issue of environmental impact; the concern which triggered the breakdown in the relationship between the oil companies and the local stakeholders in the first place. They have instead mostly focused on ameliorating the socio-economic issues resulting from oil exploration and production activities, in part as a consequence of pressure from the local communities themselves. Additionally, the findings indicate that the companies have employed hostile and controlling engagement strategies such as intimidation, appeasement, and manipulation, when dealing with local community stakeholders. These strategies are believed to have undermined the quality of their relationship with the local communities. The most notable consequence of these engagement practices is damaged trust amongst community members, as well as between the communities and the oil companies. The findings of this research have strong implications for stakeholder theory, as well as future research into stakeholder management practices, particularly in relation to non-contractual or nonmarket stakeholders; they also shed light on several important practical issues in business management.

Govender, Inbanathan. "An analysis of the key drivers, decision making and strategic issues with respect to outsourcing in the SA pharmaceutical manufacturing industry". University of South Africa, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/59.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
“Outsourcing has been touted as the ideal way for organisations to reduce cost, focus on core business processes, improve services, enhance skills, reduce time-to-market and increase overall competitive advantage,” (Power, Bonifazi and Desouza, 2004). A pertinent question is therefore ‘Can South African companies in the pharmaceutical industry remain competitive by outsourcing, what is driving these companies to outsource and how effective has the initiative been?’ The purpose of the study is to identify the extent to which various key factors play an influential role in motivating pharmaceutical companies in SA to outsource. South African pharmaceutical companies as part of the global arena, have to continually assess the feasibility of manufacturing their products in-house or allowing contract manufacturers to manufacturer and or pack on their behalf. The research questions posed in this research were: why are companies outsourcing, what is outsourcing and what is happening amongst the South African pharmaceutical companies? The results of this qualitative rich study have shown that outsourcing in SA is not just about cost savings or reduction in product costs but that this process is able to afford the contract giver the ability to tap into additional capabilities (facilities, technology and skill) of their outsourcing partner. Outsourcing has enabled the contract manufacturers in SA to assist the contract givers in numerous areas such as cost reduction, cost saving, reduction in capital investment, increased flexibility and allowed the contract givers to focus on their core competencies. The implementation of off shoring may result in South African contract givers incurring additional ‘hidden costs’ which may be attributed to quality problems, reduced flexibility of transport, product write-offs (due to large volumes ordered), currency fluctuations and additional resources that may required (technology transfer, documentation review, and validation). The responses from the research questionnaires indicate that the key drivers of outsourcing in South African are aligned with those identified in global ii marketplace by Jiang and Qureshi; Copestake and Lau and Zhang (2006). The main drivers being profitability increase (cost reduction, cost saving and capital reduction), strategic considerations (focus on core competence, increased flexibility and to facilitate market penetration) and access to knowledge and skills. The key for the South African outsourcing service providers lies in ensuring that their clients are kept satisfied so that they can minimise the threat of offshore providers. The results of the study are line with Momme and Hvolby (2001) suggestions in which they advocate that organisations only outsource when suppliers have a comparative advantage and that an organisation proactively have a stronger focus on its internal core business areas. In SA governmental changes in regulations/ laws such as those addressing parallel importation, patents, foreign investors and trade would impact on the countries national competitive advantage. However although outsourcing is highly beneficial, organisations need to carefully manage the process, identify hidden costs, risks and initiate preventative measures to ensure success. This study was the first step towards conceptualising the impact of the key drivers, decision making and strategic issues on the South African pharmaceutical manufacturing industry.

Abstract (sommario):
Even with advanced technology and new project management methodologies, construction company leaders continue to face challenges to improve labor productivity. This multiple case study was an exploration of the strategies that construction company leaders use to improve labor productivity in Doha, Qatar. The case population consisted of 6 construction company leaders operating in Doha, Qatar, who successfully identified and implemented strategies to improve labor productivity. The conceptual framework for this study was the expectancy theory. The data collection process included semistructured interviews and company documentation. Data were compiled and organized, disassembled into fragments, reassembled into a sequence of groups, and interpreted for meaning. Methodological triangulation and member checking bolstered the trustworthiness of those interpretations. Five themes emerged from these 6 construction company leaders: exploring, identifying, and evaluating issues affecting labor productivity; applying an appropriate leadership style; motivating the workforce; providing training and development; and implementing effective project management processes. By improving labor productivity, similar construction companies can complete construction projects faster and with lower construction costs. The implications for positive social change include the potential to lower construction costs and enable individuals with lower incomes in Doha, Qatar, to afford houses that they could not previously afford.

Abstract (sommario):
Despite the impact of Information Technology (IT) in today's service economy, its nature and role are elusive or ambiguous to say the least. This ambiguity has made it so difficult to measure the value of IT. To clarify the ambiguity, this study, with a focus on the strategic dimension of IT application in the web of organizational activities, proposes a conceptual model that relates IT application to Knowledge Management and then to Strategy. In this effort, incorporating the Co-alignment model as a theoretical binding agent, the role of IT is defined as a facilitator of organizational knowledge management that is regarded as the core of strategic management. The conceptual model proposed is further developed into a structural model for empirical testing. The goodness of fit of the model is assessed through the technique of the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) along with first-order and second-order confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) using the survey responses of unit managers of multi-unit restaurant companies of the U.S. and Korea. Since the mail survey was conducted in two different nations, relevant multi cultural issues are also addressed to justify the use of combined samples for the study. The results of the statistical analyses indicate that IT application can be incorporated successfully into the domain of strategic management of restaurant companies as the facilitator of Knowledge Management activities. The hypotheses of the links between IT application and financial performance remained unsolved due to invalid data. However, this study made a certain degree of contribution in identifying the dynamics of IT application in the process of strategic management incorporating the principle of the Co-alignment model.

Abstract (sommario):
The Appalachian Region continues to experience higher rates of opioid misuse and overdose deaths than other parts of the country. While the impact of the burgeoning epidemic is being felt nationwide, states and counties within the Appalachian Region are particularly hard hit, with opioid overdose rates more than double national averages. Drawing on the research presented in the health disparities and Bright Spot reports, this brief: ■ summarizes statistics on opioid misuse and overdose deaths in Appalachian communities, ■ discusses key strategies and resources for addressing opioid misuse and overdose deaths, and ■ provides recommendations for community leaders, funders, and policymakers. This brief features promising practices, intervention strategies, and policy development and implementation ideas to reduce health disparities related to opioid misuse and overdose deaths. This brief discusses five recommendations in detail: 1. Prevent opioid misuse. 2. Increase access to treatment for opioid use disorder. 3. Implement harm reduction strategies to reduce the consequences of opioid use disorder. 4. Support long-term recovery of opioid use disorder. 5. Jeeva, Ananda Singgaram. "Procurement dimensions in the Australian manufacturing sector : flexibility issues in a supply chain perspective /". Curtin University of Technology, School of Management, 2004. http://espace.library.curtin.edu.au:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=15521.

Abstract (sommario):
The manufacturing sector is a highly dynamic environment subject to continuous change and environmental uncertainty as parts, components and materials are procured and sourced globally. To be competitive, manufacturers must respond to such uncertainties rapidly and with the greatest flexibility in order to procure and maintain the supply of raw materials resources to sustain their manufacturing operations. Thus, the understanding and measuring of the procurement flexibility are key steps in maintaining a competitive advantage. So, the present study examined the theoretical concepts of procurement flexibility and proposed a generalisable measurement scale for manufacturing procurement flexibility. The scale was based on five supplier-manufacturer procurement dimensions of information exchange, supplier integration, product and component delivery, logistics and organisational structure. Further, each of these dimensions was divided into three flexibility elements of range, uniformity and mobility. A measurement scale was developed fiom a review of extant literature on flexibility relationships, purchasing, procurement and supply chain management using Q-Sort methodology. A mail survey of the major industry groups in the Australian manufacturing industry was undertaken. Principal component analysis and multiple regressions were used to examine the relationships between the flexibility dimensions and their elements. The results indicate that there is still much theory formulation and research to be conducted on procurement flexibility measurement scales. The results also revealed that Australian manufacturers have a limited experience with the flexibility issue and in some cases do not have even a procurement strategy.
These results provide important practical information and establish a range of relevant implications for the Australian manufacturing sector and its future competitiveness. This study also provides a basis for the continued development and distillation of procurement flexibility measures. One of the interesting outcomes of the Supplier Manufacturer Procurement Flexibility (ProcFlex) dimensions and the implication for overall Supply Chain Management (SCM) objectives and strateges is that ProcFlex is cumulative. Any inflexibilities and constrictions, like excess and lack of inventory, in procurement activities is accumulated and increases along the supply chain. It is like a 'stock-whip' effect that runs from suppliers to customers as to the reverse of the 'bull whip' effect.

Abstract (sommario):

Miggou, Olga. "A strategic enquiry into the holistic nature of corporate identity to enable its systematic control". Thesis, De Montfort University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/7669.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This is an unconventional study, which addresses the thematic field and the esoteric nature and essence of Corporate Identity. The thesis concentrates in the understanding of Corporate Identity aiming towards an holistic explanation of the concept appropriate for practical multidisciplinary use. It proposes a systematic methodology and establishes a design practitioner perspective, which aims at reliable co-ordination and control of Corporate Identity operations. The methodology to structure the literature A Strategic methodology of questions was developed to operate as a research methodology, which explored Corporate Identity, by revealing the “Form” of its concepts, its connections and its anomalies, as they occur extensively in the published and public domain. The review of published literature was carried out through a discussion process of published material subjected to diagnostic questions; through which the Terminology, Functional concepts, Methodologies are reported to influence Corporate Identity; contributing to the understanding of Corporate Identity’s Form and to further clarifying research issues. Literature review, was subjected to discussion, provisional observations and conclusions and is presented into 8 chapters. The Strategic Enquiry continued and extended on discussing Corporate Identity Field Examples, to interrogate real life experience material, to reveal an extended understanding of overt and covert issues of Corporate Identity’s Form, and to focus research planning accordingly. This process contributed into bringing together clusters of relevant information, gleaned from a rather fragmented published literature, thus forming a more holistic and broader understanding of the concept. However, from this holistic picture it was observed that certain essential texts are missing. Hence a further information literature search, was carried out which reported on texts which are not sufficiently or at all covered in specialised Corporate Identity literature but were regognised by this researcher as essential for a meaningful development of this thesis. The most important information brought into the context of Corporate Identity, at this stage, was a well established tool applicable to complex design projects, which was considered to be useful towards a more effective and holistic Corporate Identity control. The Field work This systematic approach and treatment of the published material contributed to an holistic understanding of the nature, scope, importance, complexity and topicality, of the subject; and lead to a diagnostic understanding of important problems that continually challenge the field. This was achieved through the research design of the thesis, which incorporated the inferences and observations of the Strategic Enquiry and the tried and tested systems design model for the organisation of complex design projects was used as a reference datum to inform the compilation of the questions of a semistructured interview. The Field study explored how Corporate Identity processes were holistically carried out in a Big UK financial institution specifically looking for practice discontinuities and deviations in the procedures. A diagnostic tool appropriate to investigate Corporate Identity operations was created as a result. The interview material was also subjected to content analysis to explore whether the thesis’ inferences and deductions could d also be grounded in practice. The thesis was then evaluated by relating the thesis material, to the thesis objectives, highlighting the outcomes and limitations employing SWOT analysis. As an epilogue to this thesis, within resources available this study appears to have contributed a substantial insight to the Form and operations of Corporate Identity. It also identified the opportunity for more valuable research, to be carried out.

Yeeting, Agnes David. "An economic analysis of the domestication of the tuna fishery - the case of Kiribati". Lincoln University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10182/1493.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Western and Central Pacific Ocean (WCPO) is home to the largest tuna fishery stock in the world. However, Pacific Island members of the Western and Central Pacific Tuna Commission (WCPTC) argue that their share of the economic rent from the tuna catches taken out of the Pacific region is very small, being on average only about 6% of the total net benefit, when compared to the share earned by Distant Water Fishing Nations (DWFNs). Kiribati is one of the Pacific Island Countries (PICs), which relies heavily on its fishery for its economic development and sustainability. Kiribati earns 40% - 50 % of its government revenue from fisheries access fees paid by DWFNs for tuna caught in the the Kiribati EEZ. The Government of Kiribati (GoK) believes that Kiribati could get greater benefit if they develop their own domestic tuna fishery. This study uses Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) and SWOT Analysis to investigate whether domestication of the tuna fishery is the right move for Kiribati or not. The CBA reported in this thesis adapted a model developed by Campbell (2004) to investigate and evaluate fisheries policy in Papua New Guinea (PNG). However the model in this thesis is reflective of the situation and case of Kiribati. In analyzing the different options identified in this study, the CBA indicated negative (-) NPV(s) for the medium-sized vessel option and positive (+) NPV(s) for the large-sized vessel option. The SWOT analysis however, complemented the CBA by further investigating the tuna domestication options in the economic, social and business and business environment of Kiribati. The SWOT analysis indicated that the existing situation and business conditions in Kiribati appears to favor the small to medium sized vessel options which are less risky than the large purse seine vessel option.

Abstract (sommario):
Based on the idea that the subsidiaries of a company are able to call into question the decisions of senior management (the parent company), the holistic approach developed in this study assumes that an organization can be a “being”, implying thereby that the information in its possession is external to the individuals who compose it. This raises the question of whether it is conceivable to ignore the individual in such a relationship of domination. This thesis proposes a model based on the results which show the difficult exclusion of the individual in a meta-organizational context (in which members would be organizations and not individuals). Along these same lines, the organization’s human dynamics are at the heart of this research: there exists by and through the individual a dynamic resulting from actual activity that allows the organization to live by itself, while also allowing prescribe to evolve. Although the results show that the organization is not a dead and strengthless object, and it has the opportunity to live by itself, it is the individuals who —through their conditional commitments— allow the separate existence of an organizational structure’s intra-consciousness, which imposes rights and obligations. In this perspective, the proposed model aims to draw the structures of abstract social reality (referred as Entity X in this study) by showing the strengths and organizational constraints that weigh on individual members, while raising the human capacity to emerge from the structures prescribed by the sensemaking of links and transversal structures for cooperation that originate from the actual activity
