Abstract (sommario):
This paper proposes a tractable sudden stop model to explain the main patterns in firm-level data from a sample of Southeast Asian firms during the Asian crisis. The model incorporates trend shocks and financial frictions, features that have so far been used separately in the literature on emerging markets. A negative shock to trend productivity growth can account, in our model, for the drop in output and its swift recovery together with the sizable and persistent downward adjustment in firms' Tobin's Q and debt levels. These patterns are broadly shared by most sudden stop episodes as documented in the literature. Trend shocks can also generate, in our model, strong leverage effects in line with the firm-level data and other observations from the literature.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT We examine contagion in earnings management using 2,376 restatements announced during the years 1997–2008. Controlling for industry and firm characteristics, firms are more likely to begin managing earnings after the public announcement of a restatement by another firm in their industry or neighborhood. Such contagion is absent when the restating firm is disciplined by the SEC or class action lawsuits, suggesting deterrent effects of enforcement activity. Contagion among peers is observed (1) in the same account as the one restated by the target firm, or (2) when larger target firms restate or the restatement is prominently disclosed, or (3) when the target firm's restatement is less severe. Contagion stops during the years 2003–2005, possibly due to the enforcement associated with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX), but reappears during 2006–2008, perhaps because the sting associated with SOX has worn off. In sum, peers' actions appear to affect a firm's earnings management decisions.

Abstract (sommario):
We develop a tractable quantitative framework to study the productivity effects of financial crises. The model features endogenous productivity, heterogeneous firm dynamics, and aggregate risk. Selection of the most promising ideas gives rise to a trade-off between mass (quantity) and composition (quality) in the entrant cohort. Chilean plant-level data from the sudden stop triggered by the Russian sovereign default in 1998 confirm the model’s main mechanism, as firms born during the credit shortage are fewer but better in terms of idiosyncratic productivity. The quantitative analysis shows that at the end of the crisis, total output is permanently 0.9 percent lower. (JEL D22, E32, F41, G01, O11, O14, O33)

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT When emerging market firms disclose relationship-based transactions, they face a trade-off in which greater transparency may help lower their cost of capital at the cost of revealing proprietary information. We find that firms overcome this challenge by relying on analysts within their private networks (i.e., connected analysts) who, through repeated interaction with the firm, can better verify relationship-based transactions. Using Chinese firms, we show that firms with more connected analysts have more accurate consensus forecasts and lower forecast dispersion. When a connected analyst departs and stops covering a firm, the accuracy and informativeness of the unconnected analysts' forecasts decrease, suggesting that information spills over from the connected analyst to analysts outside the network. We find a potential mechanism for this information spillover: communication through common institutional clients, which suggests that embedded financial analysts—those sharing close connections with firms and analysts—serve as a channel for disseminating proprietary, hard-to-verify information. Abstract (sommario):
This paper develops a dynamic two-country neoclassical stochastic growth model with incomplete markets. Short-term credit flows can be excessive and reverse suddenly. The equilibrium outcome is constrained inefficient due to pecuniary externalities. First, an undercapitalized country borrows too much since each firm does not internalize that an increase in production capacity undermines their output price, worsening their terms of trade. From an ex ante perspective each firm undermines the natural “terms of trade hedge.” Second, sudden stops and fire sales lead to sharp price drops of illiquid capital. Capital controls or domestic macro-prudential measures that limit short-term borrowing can improve welfare. (JEL F32, F43, G15, O41)

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This paper studies onset glottal stop deletion in the speech of Suva Rotumans, Fiji. The speech of 18 speakers was analysed and seven factors were tested to identify their prediction on glottal stop deletion. The linguistic factors tested were preceding sound segment, grammatical class, syllable stress, and style, while the social factors were age, gender, and denominational affiliation. Results reveal a change in progress, but towards glottal stop retention. Younger Rotumans and older Rotuman women are deleting glottal stops less compared to middle-aged women and older men. The low incidence of deletion by younger speakers is most probably due to identity, language education in Rotuman, and their increased awareness of their role in preserving the language. Additionally, older women are deleting glottal stops less, which could be attributed to contact, identity, and their consciousness of the standard.

Abstract (sommario):
The first wormhole chapter uses a speculative engagement with Alfonso Cuarón’s 2006 film Children of Men to link disparate times and spaces in the book: the history of no future shown by feminist, eugenic, imperial narratives in part 1 and the affirmative prospects for queer of color futures in part 2. The major studio film, filmed in London by the Mexican director, highlights the presence in twenty-first-century transnational popular culture of tropes from the fictional futures examined in the previous pages. Cuarón’s adaptation of the 1992 novel by P. D. James underlines the ways in which hopeful futurity is unevenly distributed along the same lines of race, gender, sexuality, capital, and globalization that determine who gets to be seen as fully human. The contradictions surrounding the character of Kee—a black woman pregnant with the first child to be born in decades whose representation in the film leaves much to be desired—become a point of possibility opening on to different worlds and futures.

Abstract (sommario):
In late 1803, Beethoven acquired a new piano from the French firm of Sébastien Erard. This piano differed from the one built by Anton Walter that he owned in the late 1790s, most notably in its heavier construction, English-style action rather than the lighter Viennese action, triple stringing, four pedal stops (lute, dampers, buff, una corda), and five-and-a-half octave range from FF to c4. The piano’s influence on Beethoven’s compositional process is apparent in his Thirty-Two Variations on an Original Theme, WoO 80 (1806), a quasi-systematic exploration of piano techniques, textures, and sonorities that exploits both the capacities and limitations of the Erard.

Abstract (sommario):
De Brug (The Bridge) is a black-and-white short silent film by Joris Ivens about the Koningshavenbrug in Rotterdam, a railroad lift bridge built between 1925 and 1927 also known as De Hef (The Lift). An iconic title of the Dutch avant-garde, the film brought Ivens international recognition. The film is largely a lyrical and abstract study; it presents the bridge as a masterpiece of modern engineering and shows the motion of, on, and around the steel construction, including all kinds of modern traffic. A train stops when the bridge lifts up, allowing ships to pass underneath on the river Maas. Ivens explores the bridge from multiple perspectives using extreme high and low angles, thus emphasizing a modern perception of fragmentation and re-composition. In a self-reflexive way, he demonstrates this perception as the rationale of cinema by integrating images of his 35mm Kinamo camera and himself at the beginning of the film. Shot against the background of Rotterdam’s skyline in a dynamic composition, the bridge becomes a product of cinema. Ivens’ film celebrates the aesthetic of the machine in its encounter of two pieces of modern technology: The Lift and the film camera.

Abstract (sommario):
What does it take to make a fire? The factors underlying fire can be illustrated with a triangle, and five fire triangles, relevant to different scales in area and time, have been defined. Let’s start with the most basic, at the smallest scale. The ‘fire fundamentals triangle’ has three elements: fuel, as there needs to be something to burn; heat, because fires can’t start without a source of heat; and oxygen, essential for a fire to combust and spread. The importance of oxygen becomes obvious when we put out a fire. The use of sand or CO2, or even smothering, is a way to exclude air, and more specifically to remove oxygen from the system so that the combustion reaction stops. Water has two effects. It reduces the amount of oxygen getting to the fire, but more importantly the heat energy from the fire goes into evaporating the water rather than heating the fuel that allows the combustion reaction to continue. Our second triangle can be called the ‘fire environment triangle’. Here again, fuel forms one of the points. Another is the weather, as this controls the moisture in the fuel, affecting its flammability. The drier the fuel, the more easily it can burn. Perhaps surprisingly, the third point of the triangle is topography, which impacts on the rate and pattern of spread of the fire. Hill slopes, for instance, can provide an updraft of air that allows the fire to spread more quickly. The next triangle up widens our perspective in terms not only of spatial scale but also time. This triangle can be called the ‘fire regime triangle’. Here we consider not simply the fuel but the type of vegetation that is being burned. Some types of vegetation are more flammable than others. The overall climate is also significant at this bigger scale. For example, temperate seasonal climates are more fire-prone than wet tropical climates, where there is rain every day. The third arm of this triangle is landform: mountainous regions are more susceptible to fire than low-lying flat areas.

Abstract (sommario):
Digital hydraulics have attracted attention towards fast switching valves and the increased focus on reliable fluid power entail that the lifetime of such valves is of great concern. An inherent feature of most valves for digital hydraulics is that of a mechanical end stop. Consequently, the squeeze film damping associated with end stops of switching valves is an interesting topic. This damping effect is perceived as beneficial for high lifetime and low impact sound, as the consequence of lowering the impact velocity at the mechanical end stops. In this paper the squeeze film damping effect is reviewed with a focus on maximum surface stresses. Using the Barus relation for viscosity-pressure dependency and different film geometries, the classical lubrication theory is applied together with the equation of motion, to obtain the gap height motion equation, both for the iso-viscous and piezo-viscous case. In consequence, this enable insights concerning the influence of piezo-viscosity on this damping effect. These models are used to investigate the loads, which the approaching surfaces experiences. Based on Hertzian theory, comparisons of impact loads and the dynamic squeeze loading are performed, whereby the relation between design parameters and the relative severity of these occurrences are analyzed.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper, piston wind effect on smoke diffusion characteristic in subway tunnel is studied by using three-dimensional transient computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. In the first simulation case, fire disaster is simulated with homogeneous resting initial field condition. In the second simulation case, the train’s decelerating process till stopping in the tunnel is simulated for getting three-dimensional tunnel air velocity field distribution. Then the final heterogeneous air velocity field when the train stops in the tunnel is taken as initial field condition and the same fire scenario as the first case is simulated again. The data obtained under both initial conditions are compared by detecting people evacuation safety and the influence of initial air velocity field is analyzed. The results show that the inertial air velocity field caused by train’s movement has significant influence on smoke diffusion at the first few minutes of fire disaster, which is the key time for people’s evacuation. The adopted method in this paper and the simulation result could be used in establishing more effective subway fire evacuation plan.

Abstract (sommario):
To reveal the inner mechanism of gas explosion, the entire scenario of premixed flame front evolution within an accidental fire is prescribed. Specifically, “finger” flame shape, which is one of the key stages of flame evolution, is scrutinized with the situation of a methane-air explosion. A transition from a globally-spherical front to a finger-shaped one occurs when a flame starts approaching the passage walls. While this acceleration is extremely strong, it stops as soon as the flame touches the passage wall. This mechanism is Reynolds-independent; being equally relevant to micro-channels and giant tunnels. The flame speed increases by an order of magnitude during this stage. To implement dusty environments, Seshadri formulation for the planar flame [Combustion and Flame 89 (1992) 333] is employed with a non-uniform distribution of inert dust gradients, specifically, linear, parabolic and hyperbolic spatial dust distribution gradients are incorporated into the “finger” flame shape. This study systematically investigates how the noncombustible dust distributions affect fire evolution, the flame shape, and propagation velocity.

Abstract (sommario):
Heavy duty and aeroderivative gas turbines for power generation and mechanical drive are installed inside an enclosure that is thermally and acoustically insulated and is equipped with fire extinguishing systems. The enclosure is bolted on the gas turbine basement and is made of a steel frame that supports removable side panels, doors and roof sections. All the fire extinguishing systems, lubricating oil pipes and electrical systems are fitted inside the enclosure and release, together with the gas turbine, a large amount of heat that has to be dissipated to avoid overheating of the gas turbine itself and its auxiliaries. Overheating of the enclosures is one of the main reasons for gas turbine unplanned stops. For avoiding high internal temperatures, the enclosure is equipped with a cooling system consisting of pipes and fans, that extracts heat from the enclosure and limits the internal temperature increase. This paper presents a calculation model developed for the study of the enclosure cooling system. Results are compared with experimental data measured on an aeroderivative gas turbine used as mechanical drive for a natural gas compression station, and acceptable correspondence is achieved.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">The compressor oil is retained at different locations of the vapor compression system during operation. After shutdown, retained oil absorbs the vapor refrigerant and mixes with the liquid refrigerant gradually. Oil retention can largely affect the heat transfer and cause insufficient oil return. In this paper, the liquid mixture behaviors at the compressor suction and discharge are observed by flow visualization. Liquid mixture property variations are estimated by existing models according to the temperature and pressure variations. At the suction, the vapor refrigerant solubility with oil rapidly increases due to the pressure increase. The viscosity and surface tension decrease quickly with temperature and refrigerant mass fraction increase in the liquid layer. Flow visualization shows that the mixture film breaks from the top of the tube wall and flows down. The oil-refrigerant mixture accumulates at the bottom of the tube within seconds. The liquid level increases then decreases. At the discharge, the refrigerant solubility fluctuates within a small range. Viscosity increases because of temperature decrease then decreases because of refrigerant mass fraction increase. After shutdown, the oil flow in contact with the inner wall of the discharge stops immediately while oil droplets in the vapor core flow slow down gradually. In the end, oil droplets flow down, coalesce with the oil film, and accumulate at the bottom of the tube. The vapor refrigerant, liquid refrigerant and oil relationship is investigated and estimated after shutdown to better understand oil retention.</div></div>

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract A new structure for determining the fracture characteristics of brittle thin films has been designed, fabricated and tested. The structure consists of a rigid central shuttle to which are attached a number of cantilever beams of varying lengths which will provide the desired fracture information. The central shuttle is tethered to the substrate by flexible beams which allow it to be moved controllably in one direction while the free ends of the cantilevers are prevented from movement by stops. By measuring the shuttle displacement at which the various beams fail, the failure strain of the beam material is determined. This structure design has been used to examine the fracture characteristics of a particular LPCVD polycrystalline silicon film, and the degradation in strength which occurs with exposure to hydrofluoric acid. The average strain at fracture measured for this heavily phosphorus doped polycrystalline silicon was 1.1% for a 10 minute exposure to hydrofluoric acid. This value drops to 0.84% after the material is exposed to hydrofluoric acid for 2 hours.

Abstract (sommario):
The joint transform architecture is well known in optical processing. Normally object and reference are presented to the system as purely real scenes. If the reference and object are identical, the joint transform power spectrum (JTPS) is the Fourier transform modulated by a cosinusoidal fringe pattern. This pattern is then itself transformed to produce the two correlation signals. Our analysis assumes that reference and object are real but that they are displayed on a device that can only modulate phase. A calculation is done for the resulting power spectrum, and the effect of displaying this power spectrum itself on a device that can only modulate phase is also modeled. Results indicate that good correlation peaks should be experimentally obtained. The effect of using an on-axis stop in the Fourier transform plane is also modeled. The correlation width can be improved greatly with a judicious choice of stops. This can be thought of as an extreme nonlinearity that imitates the behavior of photographic film in a joint transform correlator.1

Abstract (sommario):
The 1,500 kW EMD 16-645E engine is popular in switcher and shunter locomotive applications for railroads in North America. These locomotives are typically lightly loaded with extended periods of idle operation, and usually operate in large urban areas. With the advent of EPA emissions standards, and increasing fuel costs, many in the railroad industry are looking at replacing these locomotives with hybrid locomotives, installing APU systems or automatic start stops systems, repowering with newer engines, or using new technology to reduce emissions and improve fuel consumption. This paper documents results of research into ways to improve idle and low power emissions and fuel consumption from these roots-blown two-cycle EMD 645E engines. Specifically, this research looked at disabling one bank of injectors to simulate skip fire operation, and the stopping the rotation of one of the two roots-type blowers used to supply boost air to the uni-flow, two-cycle, diesel engine. The results of this work demonstrated that the EMD 16-645E engine did not respond positively when the injectors of one cylinder bank were disabled (simulating bank to bank skip fire operation). However, the engine did demonstrate both a reduction of NOx emissions and brake specific fuel consumption, over the US-EPA switcher and line haul emissions cycles, while operating on only one of the two blowers at idle and light loads. Additionally this concept of blower cut-out allows for reduced mass flow and higher exhaust temperatures at light loads, which could be beneficial for future application of exhaust aftertreatment. However, there is an associated increase in particulate matter emissions.

Abstract (sommario):
A hydrodynamic-rolling hybrid bearing (HRHB) arranged in parallel is introduced, in which the radial clearance of rolling bearing is used to prevent the rotor and hydrodynamic bearing from contacting during starts and stops. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of rolling bearing misalignment on performance of HRHB for providing a design guide of machining and assembling tolerance. An analytic model is developed to predict the static performance of HRHBs with a misalignment. The misalignment is represented as an offset and an include angle. Taking the misalignment into account, a force balance equation about oil film force, rolling bearing reaction and external load is derived. The effects of the misalignment on the locus of equilibrium position, the maximum eccentricity, and the transition speed are investigated. The results show that misalignment has significant influences on performance of HRHBs, but there are regions of included angle which are insensitive to the performance of HRHBs; according to the insensitive regions, requirement of alignment errors, machining and concentricity tolerance can be determined; distinct from conventional hydrodynamic bearings, the locus of equilibrium positions of misaligned HRHBs have three variation modes of monotone decreasing, monotone increasing, and increasing first and decreasing afterwards; the monotone decreasing mode of conventional hydrodynamic is not suitable for HRHBs below transition speed; and before the maximum eccentricity ratio, the variation mode of equilibrium positions locus should be determined.
