AbstractSándor Weöres's poetry was a life-long passion and source of inspiration for György Ligeti. This article explores the role Weöres played in Ligeti's early development as a composer by providing insight into the genesis of all of his 13 early settings of Weöres, including the unpublished choral works Hajnal [Dawn] and Tél [Winter], the incomplete song “Nagypapa leszállt a tóba” [Grandpa descended in the pond], and the unfinished oratorio “Istar pokoljárása” [Ishtar's Journey to Hell], and by making some analytical observations on them. Ligeti's early settings of Weöres were composed in three periods. The first stage in 1946–1947 was his compositional discovery of Weöres's poetry, which seems to have acted as a fuel and a challenge for him, triggering something of a musical self-liberation. His Weöres settings in 1949–1950 may be seen as a sign of solidarity with the poet effectively silenced by Communist state authorities, while in 1952–1955, Weöres texts seem to have served specifically as material for Ligeti's experimentation with static music and serialism.

Based on static data, changes in the diocese of the Masurian Evangelical-Augsburg Church were caused by the mass movement of Lutheran people to both German states. The number of faithful in the diocese decreased by 41.8% (from 39,811 to around 23,200), the parish council disintegrated, and the diocese’s income fell drastically (although the percentage of Church contributions paid by the faithful remained at the previous level). Along with the faithful, seven priests went to Germany; two state authorities were removed from the Masurian territories because of their pro-German views. 1959 is also a time of intensified efforts by the state authorities to procure the rectory and other non-religious buildings from the Church, which greatly undermined the Church’s pastoral and social work, and undermined the material basis of its existence.

Abstract In January 1958, the townspeople of San Pedro de Buena Vista hunted down and killed peasant leader Narciso Torrico, sparking a wave of violence that provoked repeated state interventions in northern Potosí department, Bolivia. Encouraged by the Movimiento Nacionalista Revolucionario (MNR) state's rightward turn, local elites had regrouped to challenge revolutionary change. Meanwhile, José Rojas—a powerful peasant leader and key MNR ally—faced a crucial crossroads. Repeatedly tapped by state authorities to pacify San Pedro de Buena Vista, Rojas vacillated between asserting political autonomy and acquiescing to state power. While previous scholarship has viewed Rojas's relationship with the revolutionary state as clear evidence of the MNR's co-optation of Bolivian peasants, the events of 1958 provide a powerful counterpoint to this narrative. I argue that crucial intermediaries like Rojas evaded state agents' control in spite of their public support for the MNR, thus challenging the historiographical portrayal of peasant leaders' passivity in the postrevolutionary years.

Abstract. The paper investigates the advance in the most intimate understanding of the construction methods of the Fabrica Solimene (1952–1955) in Vietri sul Mare, (Campania-Italy). The aim is to increase the level of geometric and informative detail of the model, digitally (re)built by means of an indirect method using a total station survey and subsequently by means of a direct method, i.e., by importing the elaborations derived from laser scanner acquisitions and photographic data sets into a BIM authoring vector software. For this purpose, using photogrammetry, new details are acquired, specifically addressed to the study of the static-mechanical behaviour of the perimeter wall studied in its mathematical configuration of the projecting bodies from bottom to top. This study is organised on the elaboration of new clean and decimated point cloud acquisitions to be converted into volumetric models for direct use in finite element calculation (FEM) codes aimed at structural analysis. Thanks to the proposed procedure, it possible to maintain the level of geometric detail appropriate to the resolution required for the analysis. At the same time, it makes it possible to find the best pipeline to reduce the size of the model and obtain the most accurate static-structural results.

Many years ago (prior to the birth of many SEG members), I published a paper on the electromagnetic fields of a line current in the presence of a homogeneous cylinder (Wait, 1952). Although the general solution presented there was correct, an omission occurred in the reduction to the quasi‐static form. Indeed, Ward and Hohmann (1988) indicated the corresponding expression for [Formula: see text] in my 1952 paper was “wrong” after they had replicated my general derivation. Also, they correctly pointed out that I should not have omitted then n = 0 term in the series expansion for [Formula: see text] in the quasi‐static limit.

Abstract:This article takes an introductory excursion into newspaper sources for researching Nigerian children's history during the colonial period by analyzing and describing items including news, editorials, stories, photos, advertisements, columns, debates, features, and letters among others. It situates these newspaper sources within the context of the circumstances under which they were produced and the prevailing politics of identity, gender, and agency, on the one hand, and the interaction between the forces of “tradition” and “modernity” on the other. Instead of approaching children's experience from the well-established stand-points of disease, violence, delinquency and crime, this paper examines the following areas: children and education; children and motherhood; and children as consumers. These uncharted areas of Nigerian children's history render alternative and useful perspectives on agency and the centrality of childhood to colonial state's ideas of progress, civilization, modernity, and social stability.

The Southern labor and desegregation movements were organized at the Highlander Folk School in Tennessee between 1932–40 and 1953–61, respectively. This historical sociology examines the role of journalism within the process of social reform by focusing on the labor and desegregation movements as racial “hot spots” of ideological tension and pragmatic transformation. A comparison of the relationship in news coverage in each movement period between the rhetoric of anti-Communism and the newspapers' normative fight against desegregation provides a point of critical analysis. In the interpretation of the resulting process of reforms, Anthony Giddens' (1984) theory of structuration supports the analysis of interactions between movement activists and their normative counterparts at the state's newspapers that ultimately produced social and institutional reforms.

Class of 2007 Abstract
Objectives: To investigate the relationship of price and prevalence of statins when new mediations enter the market and when old medications are withdrawn from the market. Methods: Patients that received a statin were enrolled in the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) from 1992 to 2002. The overall prevalence of each statin as well as the prevalence of each statin for a patient’s drug coverage (no coverage, Medicaid, Medigap, employer coverage, or other public coverage) were analyzed. Results: The overall prevalence of statin was statistically significant for 1992 versus 2002 (p<0.001). When atorvastatin came to the market towards the end of 1996, there was no difference between simvastatin (p=0.24) and pravastatin (p=0.12) in 1997 versus 1998. Conclusions: There was a difference in the prevalence of statins when atorvastatin entered the market. When cerivastatin left the market, there was a difference in the prevalence of statin use. Atorvastatin became the most prevalent statin by the end of 2002. The price of statins appeared to decrease over time from $39.01 in 1992 to $31.95 in 2002. Also, the year atorvastatin was released the average price of statins increased to $36.57 in 1997.

The commentary examines the first 192 verses of Thebaid 6, which describe the preparation and events before the funeral of Ophletes/Archemorus. The commentary explores the cultural effect and “affect” of the text. Philological and intertextual issues are discussed throughout. Textual problems are treated where appropriate. The introduction provides an overview of major themes, concepts and contexts. In the commentary itself, discursive notes introduce shorter lemmata that encompass textual, metrical, linguistic and cultural-historical issues as well as literary interpretation. Theb.6.1-24 describes the summoning of competitors to the first games at Nemea, places those games within the tradition of the other Panhellenic games and finishes with the first simile in the book. The commentary discusses the epinician, aetiological and anachronistic features of the language here and introduces the concept of the “hanging simile”. vv. 25-53 describe an “epic” Dawn, detail the lamenting in and around the palace and summarize the consolation speech of Adrastus. The commentary examines how reader expectations are defeated and how Roman and Greek rituals merge at this point. The rhetorical features of consolatio and the ineffectiveness of oratory to console are considered. vv. 54-83 focus is on the funeral couch of Opheltes. The commentary discusses the metapoetic comment in this passage; also the use of ekphrasis and the emotional significance of the gifts placed on the pyre. vv. 84-117 detail the cutting down of the grove for the funeral pyre, following aspects of the traditional topos and finishing on a second simile, the latter anachronistically describing direptio. The commentary draws out the Greek and indigenous Italian elements of this passage and shows how the language foreshadows future conflict. The animated and hyperreal nature of the landscape is explained in the commentary. vv. 118-134 the gods above and below are given equal altars and the funeral procession starts. The commentary discusses the infernal gods in the context of the poem, elucidating Roman and “Oriental”, as well as Greek, motifs. vv.135-192 Eurydice, mother of Opheltes begins a lament but, on seeing Hypsipyle, she turns it into a recriminatory speech. The commentary examines her speech as an intertextual node around which other mothers, distraught and guilty because of a lost child, can be seen. Her speech, language and non-verbal communication are then associated with these intertexts. Focus is also upon how the speech changes in terms of tone, elevation and erratic structure, and illuminates the historical/eternal conflict between birth mother and wet-nurse. The generic relationship between epic narrative and dramatic structures, such as tragedy and mime are made throughout the commentary especially at 25-192.

We construct a class of solutions to the Cauchy problem of the Klein-Gordon equation on any standard static spacetime. Specifically, we have constructed solutions to the Cauchy problem based on any self-adjoint extension (satisfying a technical condition: ``acceptability") of (some variant of) the Laplace-Beltrami operator defined on test functions in a L^2 space of the static hypersurface. The proof of the existence of this construction completes and extends work originally done by Wald. Further results include the uniqueness of these solutions, their support properties, the construction of the space of solutions and the energy and symplectic form on this space and an analysis of certain symmetries on the space of solutions and of various examples of this method, including the construction of a non-bounded below acceptable self-adjoint extension generating the dynamics.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this thesis is to show how the construction of the household as a political entity was undertaken by the Swedish state during the first half of the 1900. The household, mainly perceived as an apolitical subject, is shown to be articulated in response to the problems and ideals as formulated by the ruling body at the time. The thesis examines the period of 1911-1951, generally considered a time of great social upheaval in Sweden. The countries transition from a poor agrarian society to one of the richest countries in the world, drastically changed the perception of what a household was, and what it needed to be. By studying the material produced by Socialstyrelsen between 1913-1951 to examine the budget of different social classes, the thesis finds that the household has been formulated in different ways by the state. In the early years of the 20:th century, the household was articulated as” the frugal household” by the newly formed social authority. It was conceived as a unit for fulfilling the needs of its consistent members. The thesis shows the articulation of this particular idea of the household was an answer to the social problems formulated by the state of the time. The construction of” the frugal household” did not only formulate the thrifty housekeeping ideals of the time, but also became a way to educate the lower classes, whose economic troubles where seen mostly as a lack of self-restraint and good book keeping. As the perceived challenges to the state changed, so too did the use of the household. As the economy expanded ever further down the path of the consumption-driven welfare state, so too did the states idea of what a household was. This thesis shows how the latter use of the household concept is articulated as a unit for consumption. The frugal ideal has grown into a celebrated desire to improve one’s situation through consumption. Furthermore, both these constructions of the household serve to reproduce the core values of the state, as well as the core population of the state.

Den 1 januari 1922 öppnade det Statliga rasbiologiska institutet i Uppsala. Institutet var det första av sitt slag i världen, men kom att bli en mellanhand för den rasbiologiska gemenskapen och fler institut växte fram runt om i världen. Sverige hade sedan Carl von Linnés tid legat i framkant när det gällde att placera in djur, växter och människor i olika raser. Efter Linné följde en rad svenska forskare som också ansågs ligga i framkant i sin rasbiologiska forskning. Men ingen fick sådant internationellt genomslag i sin forskning som Herman Lundborg som ansågs vara den världsledande rasbiologen. Eftersom Herman Lundborg var en världsledande rasbiolog och aktiv inom lobbyverksamheten för att få till ett rasbiologiskt institut, valdes han till den första chefen för Statens institut för rasbiologi.
On January 1, 1922, the Swedish Institute of Racial Biology opened in Uppsala. The institute was the first of its kind in the world but came to be an intermediary for the racial biology community and more institutions emerged around the world. Since the time of Carl von Linnaeus, Sweden had been at the forefront of placing animals, plants and people in different races. After Linnaeus, several Swedish researchers followed, who were also considered to be at the forefront of their racial biology research. But nobody got such an international impact in their research as Herman Lundborg, who was considered the world-leading racial biologist. Therefore, it was natural that he should become the institute's first manager.

Redundant parallel kinematic machines are parallel mechanisms to which one or more kinematic branch is added in order to improve their mechanical properties, in particular, their stiffness. Redundant parallel kinematic machines have then more actuators than their degree of freedom. New calibration methods are developed in this thesis in order to deal with the particularities related to the actuation redundancy. First, calibration methods using geometrical models are tested. Several measurement systems and control models are compared. A self-calibration is also carried out, where the redundant branches are switched to a passive mode. Thus, they play the role of the measurement system and the mechanism can be calibrated without the help of extra sensors. Geometrical calibration methods, however, do not take into account the internal constraints due to the redundancy. Elastic deformations are neglected although they are shown to have an influence on the positioning accuracy after the calibration. Modeling methods are then developed that take into account the geometry of the mechanism as well as the stiffness of its elements to improve the accuracy of the calibration. With such modeling methods, it is possible to determine the tool-center-point position for redundantly actuated parallel mechanisms from geometrical and stiffness parameters and given positions for all actuators. The modeling methods are first demonstrated on a simple mechanism. They are then tested on a real machine and used in calibration processes.
Mechanismen mit redundanter Parallelkinematik sind Parallelmechanismen, denen eine oder mehrere kinematische Ketten zugefügt werden, um die mechanischen Eigenschaften, insbesondere die Steifigkeit, zu verbessern. Maschinen mit redundanter Parallelkinematik besitzen dann mehr Antriebe als ihr Freiheitsgrad erfordern würde. In dieser Dissertation werden neue Kalibrierungsmethoden entwickelt, um die mit der Antriebsredundanz gebundenen Besonderheiten zu betrachten. Zuerst werden Kalibrierungsmethoden basierend auf geometrischen Modellen getestet. Verschiedene Messmethoden und Messsysteme werden verglichen. Eine Selbstkalibrierung wird durchgeführt. Bei dieser Kalibrierungsmethode werden die redundanten Antriebe freigeschaltet und als Messsystem genutzt. Die Maschine kann dadurch ohne externes Messsystem kalibriert werden. Dennoch betrachten geometrische Kalibrierungsmethode keine internen Verspannungen, die mit der Redundanz verbunden sind. Die elastischen Verformungen werden vernachlässigt, obwohl gezeigt wird, dass sie einen Einfluss auf die Positioniergenauigkeit nach der Kalibrierung haben. Es werden deshalb Modellierungsmethoden entwickelt, die sowohl die Geometrie des Mechanismus als auch die Elementsteifigkeit betrachten, um die Genauigkeit der Kalibrierung zu verbessern. Mit solchen Methoden ist es möglich, die Werkzeugposition redundanter Parallelkinematiken aus den Geometrie- und Steifigkeitsparametern und allen Antriebspositionen zu bestimmen. Die Modellierungsmethoden werden zuerst an einem einfachen Mechanismus angewandt. Sie werden danach an einer realen Maschine getestet und in einem Kalibrierungsprozess genutzt
Les mécanismes à cinématique parallèle redondante sont des mécanismes parallèles auxquels a été ajoutée une branche cinématique, ou plus, dans le but d'améliorer leurs propriétés mécaniques, en particulier, leur rigidité. Les mécanismes à cinématique parallèle redondante possèdent donc plus d'actionneurs que leur degré de liberté. De nouvelles méthodes d'étalonnage sont développées dans cette thèse afin de prendre en compte les spécificités liées à la redondance d'actionnement. Les méthodes d'étalonnage utilisant des modèles géométriques sont d'abord testées. Plusieurs systèmes de mesure et plusieurs modèles de contrôle sont comparés. Un auto-étalonnage est aussi réalisé. Pour cette méthode d'étalonnage, les actionneurs redondants sont mis en mode passif et jouent le rôle de système de mesure. Le mécanisme peut être étalonné sans ajout de codeurs. Cependant, les méthodes d'étalonnage géométriques ne prennent pas en compte les contraintes internes liées à la redondance. Les déformations élastiques sont négligées bien qu'il soit montré qu'elles ont une influence sur la précision de positionnement après étalonnage. Des méthodes de modélisation qui prennent en compte la géométrie du mécanisme ainsi que la rigidité des éléments sont donc développées pour améliorer la précision de l'étalonnage. Avec de telles méthodes, il est possible de déterminer la position de l'outil des mécanismes à redondance d'actionnement à partir de paramètres géométriques et élastiques et de la position de tous les actionneurs. Les méthodes de modélisation sont d'abord appliquées sur un mécanisme simple. Elles sont ensuite testées sur une machine réelle et utilisées dans des processus d'étalonnage.

Abstract (sommario):
Machine components made of steel are subjected to heat treatment processes for improving mechanical properties in order to enhance product life and is usually done by quenching. During quenching, heat is transferred rapidly from the hot metal component to the quenchant and that rapid temperature drop induces phase transformation in the metal component. As a result, quenching generates some residual stresses and deformations in the material. Therefore, to estimate the temperature distribution, residual stress, and deformation computationally; three-dimensional finite element models are developed for two different steel components – a spur gear and a circular tube by a static and a dynamic quenching analyses, respectively. The time-varying nodal temperature distributions in both models are observed and the critical regions are identified. The variations of stress and deformation after quenching along different pathways for both models are studied. The convergence for both models is checked and validations of the models are done.

Este artículo explora la validez de los instrumentos disciplinares surgidos entre ingenieros y urbanistas a partir de la construcción del sistema de autopistas interestatales en Estados Unidos, más específicamente, en el seno de la ciudad. Los años comprendidos entre 1956 y 1962 marcan un cambio radical en la forma de la ciudad americana, pero más importante aquí, reafirman las estructuras profesionales tras su construcción. Tres conferencias, Hartford (1957), Sagamore (1958) y Hershey (1962) son el escenario de un feroz debate disciplinar, y un intento del urbanismo por recuperar el territorio perdido, aún cuando los nuevos constructores de la ciudad ya ocupan, cómodamente, sus lugares. In the middle of the twentieth century, the American city debated its future between the pragmatism of a method and the utopia of a theory. This article explores the debate over the validity of disciplinary tools that emerged between engineers and urban planners from the construction of the Interstate Highway System in the United States, more specifically, in the heart of the American city. The years between 1956 and 1962 marked a radical change in the shape of the American city, but more importantly, these years would mark the reaffirmation of the professional structures behind its construction. Three conferences, Hartford (1957), Sagamore (1958) and Hershey (1962) would be the stage of a ferocious disciplinary debate, and an attempt by the discipline of urban planning to recover lost territory, even while the new builders of the city were already occupying their places.

Dobson spectrophotometer No. 83 was established in 1962 as a standard for total ozone measurements in the United States. In 1980, the instrument was designated by the World Meteorological Organization as the Primary Standard Dobson spectrophotometer for the world. Since the early 1970’s, instrument No. 83 has been used extensively to calibrate instruments of the global Dobson total ozone station network. Calibrations of the instrument (on the Vigroux (1953) ozone absorption coefficient scale for AD wavelengths) were performed by the Langley slope method (Dobson and Normand, 1962) at Sterling, Virginia, in 1962, and at Mauna Loa, Hawaii in 1972, 1976, 1978,1979, 1980, 1981, 1984, and 1986-1989. Additionally, calibration checks on the instrument have been performed routinely since 1962 with a set of standard lamps Results of the calibrations through 1987 have been described elsewhere in detail (Komhyr et al., 1989).

O historiador Richard Morse (1922-2001) publica o livro De comunidade à metrópole, a biografia de São Paulo, em 1954, nas comemorações do IV Centenário da cidade. O livro, hoje um clássico, foi gestado entre a sua formação nos Estados Unidos e a pesquisa de campo em São Paulo. Esse artigo tem a intenção traçar paralelos entre as condições urbanas e culturais de São Paulo e Nova York em 1940 e 1950 e a estrutura narrativa do livro, apontando o que Morse traz da América para a formulação do problema encarado na tese – a evolução urbana de comunidade à metrópole – e o que ele formula na experiência de pesquisa numa cidade em processo de metropolização. Richard Morse (1922-2001) published the book From community to metropolis, the biography of São Paulo, in 1954, in celebration of the fourth centenary of the city. The book, now a classic, was conceived between his training in the United States and his field research in São Paulo. This article intends to draw parallels between the urban and cultural conditions of Sao Paulo and New York in the 40’s and 50’s and the narrative structure of the book, pointing out that Morse brings form America to the formulation of the problem faced in the thesis - the urban evolution from community to metropolis - and that he makes in the search experience in a city undergoing metropolis.

Arrivé à Paris en 1945 il intègre l’Atelier de Le Corbusier où il travaille exclusivement sur les études et le chantier de l’Unité d’Habitation de Marseille. Après avoir été chargé de représenter Le Corbusier au 7e CIAM à Bergamo en 1949 Candilis va se rendre au Maroc où il va construire des nombreuses opérations en qualité de directeur de l’ATBAT Afrique et de membre du groupe GAMMA. Il va se révéler un des acteurs du Team X assurant le passage des CIAM au Team X dont il organisera 5 réunions entre 1960 et 1977. De retour en France en 1955 Candilis va s’associer avec les architectes Woods et Josic. L’équipe va remporter le concours Million et construire près de 4000 logements à Bagnols sur Cèze, Toulouse et en région parisienne. D’autres concours vont suivre en France et à l’étranger, l’équipe construira ainsi l’université libre de Berlin. Par la suite Candilis assure seul la mission d’architecte en chef de la station de Leucate Barcares (1962-1976) et entre 1970 et 1978 il est chargé de plusieurs projets au Moyen Orient. Subsequently Candilis assumes alone the chief architect mission of Leucate Barcares station (1962-1976) and between 1970 and 1978 he was responsible for several projects in the Middle East. In parrallel Candilis is involved in the diffusion of architecture since 1953 as an editorial board member of reviews and in architectural education with a grade of Professor since 1963. The eruption effect on stratospheric aerosol was first observed during lidar sounding at Obninsk station (55°N, 37°E ) in 37 days following the eruption, 22 of July , 1991. The devices used for sounding are described in [1]. The speed of cloud movement, computed on the given measurements, has been found to be more than 1 degree per twenty four hours. 21 of February, 1992 the integral backscatter reached the value 3,67 10−3 Br−1 ( the measurements were carried out at the wavelength of 532 nm ) in the layer of 15-30 km and than began to decrease. According to preliminary results the time of relaxation of the stratospheric aerosol in latitude 55°North is close to 10 months, i.e. just less than the relaxation time of the stratospheric aerosol formed following volcano El Chichon in 1982.

In the middle of the 19th century, comprehensive river regulation and flood control works began on the entire lowland section of the Tisza/Tisa River. Soon, a number of water development plans were made for the catchment area of one of the tributaries, the River Túr/Tur. Plans outlining several technical alternatives have been prepared for the purpose of flood drainage, inland water drainage and water utilization. The implementation of the plans took place over decades, with construction started in 1914 interrupted due to the outbreak of World War I (Túr-Tisza branch channel). Most of the water facilities in the lower Hungarian section of the Túr River were built between 1926 and 1930 according to revised plans. The flood defense embankments on the Romanian river section were built in 1956-1957 and were further developed after the catastrophic floods of 1970, with half a dozen pumping stations set up to transfer the inland waters to the receiving area. Between 1972 and 1974, the Călineşti-Oaş dam and water reservoir were built. In our paper we describe the technical plans developed by the River Engineering Office in Szatmárnémeti (Satu Mare) at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century for the regulation of the Túr river. We present the findings of the technical review of the plan and the calculations made for the water supply of the reservoir. We describe the development of the hydrometric network necessary for the foundation of hydrological calculations. When writing the paper, we used the technical documentation in the Upper Tisza Region Water Historical Collection in Nyíregyháza, which has not been published so far.

The article considers the history, thematic range of expression and a number of authors and publicists of the newspaper «Christian Voice» (with the frequency of a fortnightly). It has been published in Munich by nationally conscious groups of migrants since 1949 as a part of the «Ukrainian Christian Publishing House». The significance of this Ukrainian newspaper in post-Nazi Germany is only partly comprehended in the works of a number of diaspora press’s researchers. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to supplement the scientific information about the «Christian Voice» in the postwar period, in particular, the yearbook for 1957 was chosen as the principal subject of analysis. In the process of writing the article, we used such methods: analysis, synthesis, content analysis, generalization and others. Thus, the results of our study became the socio-political and religious context in which the «Christian Voice» was founded. The article is also a concise overview of the titles of Ukrainian magazines in post-Nazi Germany in the 1940s and 1950s. The thematic analysis of publications of 1957 showed the main trends of journalistic texts in the newspaper and the journalistic skills of it’s iconic authors and publicists (D. Buchynsky, M. Bradovych, S. Shah, etc.). The thematic range of the newspaper after 1959 was somewhat narrowed due to the change in the status of the «Christian Voice» when it became the official newspaper of the UGCC in Germany. It has been distinguished two main thematic blocks of the newspaper ‒ social and religious. Historians will find interesting factual material from the newspaper publications about the life of Ukrainians in the diaspora. Historians of journalism can supplement the bibliographic apparatus in the journalistic and publicistic works of the authors in the postwar period of the newspaper and in subsequent years of publishing. Based upon the publications of the «Christian Voice» in different years, not only since 1957, journalists can study the contents and a form of different genres, linguistic peculiarities in the newspaper articles, and so on.

This paper examines how the adoption of the Australian ballot (AB), and ipso facto, the transition from the nominal to effective secret vote, shaped the nature of party politics in Brazil. Engaging the literature on political clientelism, the impact of the AB on three outcomes is studied: 1) the ideological leanings of voters at the ballot box; 2) the degree of electoral control enjoyed by local vote brokers; and 3) the capacity of citizens to effectively participate in the electoral process. In order to get leverage on these issues, the paper utilizes an original dataset -painstakingly assembled from regional electoral archives- which contains municipal-level vote returns for federal deputy and senate contests during the period before and after the AB's introduction in Brazil (1958-1962). The dataset exploits the fact that the AB was introduced at different times in different states and for different offices in the country, thereby creating an unprecedented opportunity to assess the impact of this institution. Using a triple difference-in-difference procedure, the study finds that the AB: 1) shifted the ideological balance of power from Right to Left; 2) did not greatly weaken the hand of vote brokers; and 3) greatly increased the proportion of wasted votes cast in elections.
