Federated Learning with Noisy Labels (F-LNL) aims at seeking an optimal server model via collaborative distributed learning by aggregating multiple client models trained with local noisy or clean samples. On the basis of a federated learning framework, recent advances primarily adopt label noise filtering to separate clean samples from noisy ones on each client, thereby mitigating the negative impact of label noise. However, these prior methods do not learn noise filters by exploiting knowledge across all clients, leading to sub-optimal and inferior noise filtering performance and thus damaging training stability. In this paper, we present FedDiv to tackle the challenges of F-LNL. Specifically, we propose a global noise filter called Federated Noise Filter for effectively identifying samples with noisy labels on every client, thereby raising stability during local training sessions. Without sacrificing data privacy, this is achieved by modeling the global distribution of label noise across all clients. Then, in an effort to make the global model achieve higher performance, we introduce a Predictive Consistency based Sampler to identify more credible local data for local model training, thus preventing noise memorization and further boosting the training stability. Extensive experiments on CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, and Clothing1M demonstrate that FedDiv achieves superior performance over state-of-the-art F-LNL methods under different label noise settings for both IID and non-IID data partitions. It is well-known that noises are inevitable in gene regulatory networks due to the low-copy numbers of molecules and environmental fluctuations. In this paper, we investigate the stationary probability distribution (SPD) between both low (OFF state) and high (ON state) protein levels and mean first passage time (MFPT) in an abstract model of the Myc/E2F/miR-17-92 network presented by Aguda et al., PNAS 105, 19678 (2008), where the gene expression is assumed to be disturbed simultaneously by intrinsic and extrinsic noises that were correlated. Our results show that (i) the OFF state is enhanced by the extrinsic noise (D), while the ON state is enhanced by the intrinsic noise (Q) or cross-correlation between two noises (λ); (ii) for the cases of negative or no cross-correlation (λ⩽0.0), the increase of the noise intensity (D or Q) leads to a decline of the MFPT and enhances the probability of toggle switch to the OFF state; (iii) but for the case of positive cross-correlation (λ>0.0), the MFPT as a function of the noise intensity (D or Q) exhibits a maximum, this maximum for MFPT identifies the characteristic of noise enhanced stability of the ON state and (iv) the cross-correlation between two noises can enhance stability of the ON state.

Abstract We investigate the escape dynamics of an active Brownian particle (ABP) in a spatial cubic potential subject to the cross-correlated multiplicative noise and additive noise. Based on the Schweitzer–Ebeling–Tilch model, the effects of noise strength, cross-correlation intensity between noises, damping coefficient and potential amplitude on the mean escape time (MET) from a metastable potential state are analyzed. The results indicate that the MET exhibits a non-monotonic behavior with a maximum as a function of the intensities of the multiplicative and additive noises, identifying the occurrence of the noise enhanced stability (NES) effects induced by the multiplicative noise and by the additive noise. The increase of the cross-correlation strength always enhances the NES effect induced by the additive noise, regardless of the cross-correlation between noises is positive or negative. However, the positive and negative cross-correlation play an opposite role on the NES effect induced by the multiplicative noise. Moreover, the NES effects induced by the additive and multiplicative noises can be enhanced by the increase of the damping coefficient and the potential amplitude. A physical mechanism for the NES effect of the ABP can be understood as the fact that a certain amount of noise can stabilize the sojourn of the ABP in a limit cycle. Our results demonstrate that the cross-correlation between noises may provide a possible strategy for controlling the stability of active particle systems.

In this paper, we focus on investigating the stochastic stability and the regime transition between the endangered state and the boom state for a time-delayed insect growth system driven by correlated external and internal noises. By use of the Fokker–Planck equation, the method of small time delay approximation and the fast descent method, we explore in detail the joint action of noise terms and time delay on the mean reproduction and depression time for the insect population. Our investigations indicate that the pseudo-resonance phenomenon of the mean first-passage time (MFPT) occurs because of the impact of different noises and time delay. Through the numerical calculation, it is discovered that multiplicative noise can speed up the shift of the insect population from the boom state to the endangered one, while the noise correlation and time delay can propel the insect system to evolve from the endangered state to the boom state and improve the biological stability. In addition, the impact of the additive noise on the stability of the biological system depends on the positive and negative situation of the noise correlation. On the other hand, during the process of suppressing the insect explosion, it is beneficial to the pest control to amplify the association noise strength and weaken the intensities of the multiplicative, additive noises and time delay. However, during the process of eliminating the pests, it can produce nice effect on the disinsection to increase time delay, the intensities of multiplicative and additive noises and weaken the strength of noise correlation.

AbstractFrom March 23rd to May 3rd 2020, Italy underwent a complete lockdown in the attempt to contain the spread of the pandemic due to Covid-19 outbreak. During this period, a new kind of environment has been experienced in all cities, resulting in an abatement of traffic noise levels. Consequently, due to the prohibition of all non-essential activities, traffic noise dynamics changed as well. In this paper, we analyse the data recorded from the permanent noise monitoring network installed in the pilot area of the city of Milan, Italy. The results show how, besides a dramatic reduction of the noise levels (about 6 dB on average), also the noise pattern was profoundly changed. This is particularly important in the framework of DYNAMAP, a statistically based European project able to predict traffic noise over an extended area based on the noise recorded by limited number of monitoring stations. The change of the traffic dynamics, resulting in different noise patterns of the normalized hourly median profiles for each sensor, pose some limitations about the use of such predicting tool during extraordinary situations such as that experienced during a lockdown.

The stability analysis of a Beddington–DeAngelis (B–D) type predator–prey model driven by symmetric trichotomous noises is presented in this paper. Using the Shapiro–Loginov formula, the first-order and second-order solution moments of the system are obtained. The moment stability conditions of the B–D predator–prey model are given by using Routh–Hurwitz criterion. It is found that the stabilities of the first-order and second-order solution moments depend on the noise intensities and correlation time of noise. The first-order and second-order moments are stable when the correlation time of noise is increased. That is, the trichotomous noise plays a constructive role in stabilizing the solution moment with regard to Gaussian white noise. Finally, some numerical results are performed to support the theoretical analyses.

Noise exists inherently in realistic quantum systems and affects the evolution of quantum systems. We investigate the dynamics of quantum networks in noisy environments by using the fidelity of the quantum evolved states and the classical percolation theory. We propose an analytical framework that allows us to characterize the stability of quantum networks in terms of quantum noises and network topologies. The calculation results of the framework determine the maximal time that quantum networks with different network topologies can maintain the ability to communicate under noise. We demonstrate the results of the framework through examples of specific graphs under amplitude damping and phase damping noises. We further consider the capacity of the quantum network in a noisy environment according to the proposed framework. The analytical framework helps us better understand the evolution time of a quantum network and provides a reference for designing large quantum networks.

Time-delay systems disturbed by white noise have been comprehensively modelled as stochastic functional differential equations in the existing literature. However, in some specific situations, they cannot always precisely describe the dynamic character of time-delay systems subject to non-white noise disturbances. In this paper, colour noises with finite two-order moments are introduced to time-delay systems (such systems are referred to as random ones). First, we present some general conditions to guarantee the existence and uniqueness of solutions to random time-delay systems. Next, in light of these results and the Lyapunov function approach, the noise-to-state stability and eλ t-weighted integral noise-to-state stability are analysed, respectively. One example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the obtained results.

Abstract The coupling of the dynamical core of a numerical weather prediction model to the physical parameterizations is an important component of model design. This coupling between the physics and the dynamics is explored here from the perspective of stochastic differential equations (SDEs). It will be shown that the basic properties of the impact of noisy physics on the stability and accuracy of common numerical methods may be obtained through the application of the basic principles of SDEs. A conceptual model setting is used that allows the study of the impact of noise whose character may be tuned to be either very red (smooth) or white (noisy). The change in the stability and accuracy of common numerical methods as the character of the noise changes is then studied. Distinct differences are found between the ability of multistage (Runge–Kutta) schemes as compared with multistep (Adams–Bashforth/leapfrog) schemes to handle noise of various characters. These differences will be shown to be attributable to the basic philosophy used to design the scheme. Additional experiments using the decentering of the noisy physics will also be shown to lead to strong sensitivity to the quality of the noise. As an example, the authors find the novel result that noise of a diffusive character may lead to instability when the scheme is decentered toward greater implicitness. These results are confirmed in a nonlinear shear layer simulation using a subgrid-scale mixing parameterization. This subgrid-scale mixing parameterization is modified stochastically and shown to reproduce the basic principles found here, including the notion that decentering toward implicitness may lead to instability.

Uncertainty estimation for unlabeled data is crucial to active learning. With a deep neural network employed as the backbone model, the data selection process is highly challenging due to the potential over-confidence of the model inference. Existing methods resort to special learning fashions (e.g. adversarial) or auxiliary models to address this challenge. This tends to result in complex and inefficient pipelines, which would render the methods impractical. In this work, we propose a novel algorithm that leverages noise stability to estimate data uncertainty. The key idea is to measure the output derivation from the original observation when the model parameters are randomly perturbed by noise. We provide theoretical analyses by leveraging the small Gaussian noise theory and demonstrate that our method favors a subset with large and diverse gradients. Our method is generally applicable in various tasks, including computer vision, natural language processing, and structural data analysis. It achieves competitive performance compared against state-of-the-art active learning baselines.

In this paper, we investigate the steady-state properties and the transition rate for an ecological vegetation growth system induced by the terms of the colored multiplicative and additive noises. Numerical results indicate that the multiplicative noise and the additive one can reduce the stability of the ecological system and slow down the development velocity of the vegetation, while two noise self-correlation times can increase the stability of the system and speed up the expansion process of the vegetation system. With respect to the stochastic resonance (SR) phenomenon caused by noise terms and a multiplicative weak periodic signal, the results show that the additive noise always enhances the SR effect, two noise self-correlation time terms can produce SR phenomenon, but play opposite roles in enhancing or inhibiting the SR effect under different parameter conditions. In particular, the two self-correlation times can keep up the maximum of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) invariant in specific situations. Analogously, the multiplicative noise can not only improve the SNR, but also restrain the SR phenomenon in different cases.

A stochastic generalization of the Ricker discrete population model is studied under the assumption that noise impacts the population reproduction rate. The obtained results demonstrate that the demographic-type stochastic noise increases the risk of the population extinction. In particular, the paper establishes conditions on the noise intensity under which the population will extinct even if the corresponding population with no noise survives.

This paper presents the theoretical and experimental study on the spectrogram image analysis of error signals for minimizing the impulse input noises in the active suppression of noise. Impulse inputs of some specific wave patterns as primary noises to a one-dimensional duct with the length of 1800 mm are shown. The convergence speed of the adaptive feedforward algorithm based on the least mean square approach was controlled by a normalized step size which was incorporated into the algorithm. The variations of the step size govern the stability as well as the convergence speed. Because of this reason, a normalized step size is introduced as a new method for the control of impulse noise. The spectrogram images which indicate the degree of the attenuation of the impulse input noises are considered to represent the attenuation with the new method. The algorithm is extensively investigated in both simulation and real-time control experiment. It is demonstrated that the suggested algorithm worked with a nice stability and performance against impulse noises. The results in this study can be used for practical active noise control systems.

Problems with milking and udder health can be attributed to the following causes: (1) sound intensity level (noise) &gt; 65 dB in the milking area, (2) transmission of oscillation (vibration) &gt; 0.3 m/s<sup>2 </sup>to the body of the cow in the milking parlour, (3) transmission of severe oscillation (vibration) into the vacuum system, (4) assembly and installation faults causing fluid flow problems and hence pressure fluctuations in the vacuum system. By combining technical alterations to a practical unit with the fitting of the Vibrations-schlucker<sup>&reg;</sup>, it was possible to significantly improve vacuum stability. At the same time noise dropped to one quarter of the original level and vibration was reduced by a factor of five. A significantly reduced working time requirement testified to more pleasant conditions for humans and animals. The results show that the installation requirements according to ISO 5707 (1996) have gaps here. Further studies should specifically define the comfort limits for humans and animals in milking parlours. &nbsp;

The effects of noise correlation and time delay on the transient properties of a cancer growth system are studied in terms of the mean first-passage time (MFPT), which provides a measure of the mean extinction time of the tumor cell population. The results indicate that the additive and multiplicative noises can induce the noise-enhanced stability (NES) effect. The increasing of the delay time weakens the NES effect in the presence of two noise sources and induces a shift of the maximum of the MFPT towards smaller values of the noise intensities. The increasing of cross-correlation strength between noises can only restrain the NES effect induced by the multiplicative noise and can induce a shift of the peak of the MFPT towards larger values of the noise intensities.

In this paper, the stability and the phenomenon of stochastic resonance (SR) for a stochastic time-delayed cancer development system that is induced by the multiplicative periodic signal, the multiplicative and the additive noises are investigated. By using the fast descent method, small time delay method and the two-state theory, the expressions of the steady state probability distribution function and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are obtained. Numerical results reflect that the multiplicative and additive noise always restrain the diffusion of the cancer cells. Whereas, the time delay can not only control the spread of the tumor cells, but also suppress the extinction of cancer cells. Meanwhile, the conventional SR occurs in the tumor cell growth model under the excitation of different noises and time delay. In conclusion, the multiplicative noise always plays a critical role in restraining SR, a smaller additive noise can stimulate the SR, but the larger additive noise can weaken the SR and SNR. In particular, the time delay displays relatively complicated effects on the SR phenomenon of the system. It plays different roles in motivating or suppressing SR under the different conditions of parameters.

In this paper, the stable state transformation and the effect of the stochastic resonance (SR) for a metapopulation system are investigated, which is disturbed by time delay, the multiplicative non-Gaussian noise, the additive colored Gaussian noise and a multiplicative periodic signal. By use of the fast descent method, the approximation of the unified colored noise and the SR theory, the dynamical behaviors for the steady-state probability function and the SNR are analyzed. It is found that non-Gaussian noise, the colored Gaussian noise and time delay can all reduce the stability of the biological system, and even lead to the population extinction. Inversely, the self-correlation times of two noises can both increase the stability of the population system and be in favor of the population reproduction. As regards the SNR for the metapopulation system induced by the noise terms and time delay, it is discovered that time delay and the correlation time of the multiplicative noise can effectively enhance the SR effect, while the multiplicative noise and the correlation time of the additive noise would all the time suppress the SR phenomena. In addition, the additive noise can effectively motivate the SR effect, but not alter the peak value of the SNR. It is worth noting that the departure parameter from the Gaussian noise plays the diametrical roles in stimulating the SR effect in different cases.

This work investigates the global stability of cellular neural networks with distributive time delays and noise perturbations. Two types of noise perturbations are considered in the system, one is internal noise and another is external noise. We show that the deterministic system preserves the globally exponential stability when it is perturbed by the internal noise with small noise strength. On the other hand, the deterministic system can only preserve weaker stability when it is perturbed by the external noise. We also provide some numerical simulations to support our theoretical analysis.

In this paper, the stability and the mean extinction time for a double time-delayed metapopulation system driven by associated multiplicative and additive noises are investigated. By using the Fokker–Planck equation, the fast descent method and the method of small time delay, we obtain the expressions of stationary probability distribution and the mean extinction time. The numerical results demonstrate that the multiplicative, additive noises and time delay θ can destroy the stability of the system. Whereas, the associated noise and time delay τ can consolidate the population system. Meanwhile, the resonant phenomenon of the mean first-passage time (MFPT) occurs in the metapopulation system due to the joint action of different types of noises and time delays. The increase of the strength of associated noise and time delay τ can effectively prolong the extinction time of the metapopulation. Inversely, the additive noise plays a negative role in restraining the collapse of the population. On the other hand, the appropriate multiplicative noise intensity can also extend the life of the metapopulation system. However, the varying of time delay θ cannot change the maximum of the mean extinction time, but it could produce different effects on the MFPT under the conditions of different parameters.

NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) is a key factor affecting vehicle comfort. Compared with traditional sound absorption and isolation methods, active noise control (ANC) offers a significant advantage in solving the problem of low- and medium-frequency noise from road surfaces. However, the classic filtered-x least mean squares (FxLMS) algorithm is ineffective in terms of adapting to different road noises to ensure a stable noise reduction effect when facing the complex and changeable noise environment of moving vehicles. Therefore, an adaptive step size algorithm (ASSFxLMS) is proposed in this paper, which can adjust the step size according to the size of the reference signal to ensure the stability of the adaptive process. In order to improve the performance of the algorithm, a particle swarm optimization algorithm is also used to automatically adjust the parameters, so that the step size of the adaptive algorithm always maintains a relatively ideal size. The simulated pulse noise of standard SαS distribution was used as the reference signal for the simulation. The simulation results show that compared with other algorithms, the proposed algorithm under different degrees of pulse noise conditions, noise reduction stability, and noise reduction amplitude are improved. In order to further verify the feasibility of the algorithm in vehicle road noise reduction, this paper also conducted a hardware-in-the-loop noise reduction experiment in the laboratory, employing the road noise data collected by the real vehicle. Under different interior noise conditions, the proposed active noise-control system has a maximum noise reduction effect of 12 dB for low-frequency noise below 100 Hz.

In this paper, the stochastic stability of internal HIV models driven by Gaussian white noise and Gaussian colored noise is analyzed. First, the stability of deterministic models is investigated. By analyzing the characteristic values of endemic equilibrium, we could obtain that internal HIV models reach a steady state under the influence of RTI and PI drugs. Then we discuss the stochastic stability of internal HIV models driven by Gaussian white noise and Gaussian colored noise, based on probability density functions. The functional methods are carried out to derive the approximate Fokker-Planck equation of stochastic internal HIV systems and further obtain the marginal probability density functions. Finally, numerical results show that the noise intensities have a great influence on uninfected cell, infected cell, and virus particles, for predicting the stability of stochastic dynamic systems subjected to Gaussian white noise and Gaussian colored noise.

A high stability Laser source at 1064 nm for Taiji-1 satellite is reported. The key component of the Laser source is a nonplanar ring oscillator (NPRO) solid laser with linewidth of 260 Hz. Frequency noise and power noise of Laser source are greatly improved by applying precision driving current control and temperature control. The frequency noise of 0.1 MHz/sqrt(Hz)@ 0.1 Hz and the power noise of 0.02%@0.1 Hz are obtained. Its working performances in-orbit are analyzed and compared with the ground test, showing negligible variation.

In this article, we propose a three-species prey-predator system with Holling II functional response and stochastic perturbations involving white noise and Levy noise. Firstly, we study the existence and uniqueness of a global positive solution and stochastic ultimate boundedness. Then, we obtain sufficient conditions for stability, extinction, strongly persistence in the mean and stochastic permanence in the sense of probability for the stochastic system. The results show that both white noise and Levy noise may change the asymptotic properties of the population system. We derive a loss function which is minimized by this algorithm and interpret it in a noisy PCA setting. The demand for precise positioning in noisy environments has propelled the development of research on array antenna radar systems. Although the orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm demonstrates superior performance in signal reconstruction, its application efficacy in noisy settings faces challenges. Consequently, this paper introduces an innovative OMP algorithm, DTM_OMP_ICA (a dual-threshold mask OMP algorithm based on independent component analysis), which optimizes the OMP signal reconstruction framework by utilizing two different observation bases in conjunction with independent component analysis (ICA). By implementing a mean mask strategy, it effectively denoises signals received by array antennas in noisy environments. Simulation results reveal that compared to traditional OMP algorithms, the DTM_OMP_ICA algorithm shows significant advantages in noise suppression capability and algorithm stability. Under optimal conditions, this algorithm achieves a noise suppression rate of up to 96.8%, with its stability also reaching as high as 99%. Furthermore, DTM_OMP_ICA surpasses traditional denoising algorithms in practical denoising applications, proving its effectiveness in reconstructing array antenna signals in noisy settings. This presents an efficient method for accurately reconstructing array antenna signals against a noisy backdrop.

Low-power memories typically operate in the subthreshold region of the device; however, as the supply voltage continues to decrease, the impact of leakage current on SRAM stability becomes more significant. The traditional method of measuring static noise tolerance only considers the effect of voltage, and the measurement results are not accurate enough. Therefore, this paper proposes a leakage-current-based stability analysis that provides better metrics, reads current noise tolerance (RINM) and writes current noise tolerance (WINM) to measure the stability of subthreshold SRAMs. Both currents and voltages were taken into account. The results demonstrate that the method is more accurate than the conventional method under subthreshold levels.

Premature infants in the NICU are often exposed to continuous loud noise despite research documenting the presence and damaging effects of noise on the preterm infant’s development. Excessive auditory stimulation creates negative physiologic responses such as apnea and fluctuations in heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation. Preterm infants exposed to prolonged excessive noise are also at increased risk for hearing loss, abnormal brain and sensory development, and speech and language problems. Reducing noise levels in the NICU can improve the physiologic stability of sick neonates and therefore enlarge the potential for infant brain development. Recommendations include covering incubators with blankets, removing noisy equipment from the incubator environment, implementing a quiet hour, educating staff to raise awareness, and encouraging staff to limit conversation near infants.

By means of the Lyapunov exponent and the moment Lyapunov exponent method the stochastic stability of the nano system is analyzed for different system parameters under an axial load modeled as a wideband white noise process. Abstract This paper explores how Lévy noise and Gaussian noise affect the ecological grazing system by using the fourth-order Runge–Kutta method to simulate dynamic system and the Janicki-Weron algorithm to produce Lévy noise. Two deterministic quantities, the mean first passage time (MFPT) and the probability density function (PDF) of the first passage time (FPT), are utilized to explore the transient properties of grazing ecosystem. Our research results show that: (i) The transitions between two alternative stable states can be induced by the Gaussian noise intensity, Lévy noise intensity, Lévy stability index and Lévy skewness parameter. (ii) A higher Lévy noise intensity and a larger Lévy stability index or Lévy skewness parameter make the MFPT from desert state to sustainable vegetated state shorter; a higher Gaussian noise intensity makes it longer, which indicates that increased Lévy noise intensity can mitigate ecosystem degradation; increased Gaussian noise intensity will lead to desertification of vegetation. (iii) For larger Lévy noise intensity, the MFPT from sustainable vegetated state to desert state as a function of Gaussian noise intensity exhibits one maximum value when it transformation from the sustainable vegetated state to the desert state, the noise enhanced stability (NES) phenomena of grazing ecosystems are observed.

According to the characteristics of different interference noises, their impacts on all aspects of the system are fully analyzed, and then, we give a series of targeted hardware and software measures. Finally in this paper, the adaptability of the system is studied, and we presented a feasible way to improve the anti-interference ability and stability of the system.

<abstract><p>The transient stability of power systems plays the key role in their smooth operation, which is influenced by many working condition factors. To automatically evaluate transient stability status precisely for power systems remains a practical issue. To realize data-driven evaluation for the transient stability of the power systems, this paper proposes an ensemble machine learning-based assessment approach for transient stability status of power systems, which is named as EM-TSA for short. The experiments prove that the proposed model outperforms each secondary learning model and the traditional deep learning model in terms of accuracy and safety indexes. Considering the effect of noise, the experiments are repeated by adding Gaussian noise to the original test set. The results show that the ensemble learning model can maintain 98.4% accuracy under various noisy environments. In addition, the proposed model is combined with the sample transfer learning algorithm when the system topology is changed. An online update method for transient stability models is proposed, and compared with the previous approaches, the proposed algorithm can adapt to the online update of transient stability assessment models.</p></abstract>
