The monograph presents a regional and municipal description of the development of the oil and gas industry in the Orenburg region. A brief description of the natural conditions, the resource base of hydrocarbon raw materials is given, the stages of formation and development of the oil and gas industry in the context of the region and the largest oil and gas producing enterprises are revealed. The availability of fuel and energy resources in the Orenburg region is shown, data on production volumes at the territorial level, for the largest subsurface users and small companies, including those that have ceased their economic activities, are presented. The role of the oil and gas industry in the formation and development of the oil refining and gas chemical industry is revealed. When working on the book, data from the Central Dispatch Department of the Fuel and Energy Complex of Russia, the Federal State Statistics Service, the Office of the Federal State Statistics Service for the Orenburg Region, departments and departments of the Government of the Orenburg Region, research and design institutes, major enterprises, literary sources, periodicals, Internet resources were used. It is addressed to geographers, geologists, oilmen, economists, politicians, managers, specialists dealing with the problems of the development of the oil and gas industry. It will be useful for university students studying in geographical, geological, technical and economic fields of study and specialties, teachers, graduate students, high school students, lyceums, gymnasiums and anyone interested in their "small and large Homeland".

Chapter 2, ‘After the Institutionalization of Bildung: The Potsdam Antigone of 1841’, traces the successful production of Antigone in Potsdam back to developments that began in Prussia after the devastating Napoleonic Wars—particularly to Wilhelm von Humboldt’s reform of the school system and his foundation of Berlin University. Both contributed to Philhellenism by focusing on the study of the Greek language at the Gymnasium and on Altertumswissenschaften (Classics) at the university. The emergence of historicism is identified and discussed as another important precondition that allowed for a new attitude towards the ‘foreignness’ of ancient Greek theatre, resulting in a new theatre aesthetics that maintained the idea of the ‘foreign’ but without alienating the spectator. The Potsdam Antigone created a model for performances of Greek tragedies not only in Prussia but also in other German states, and beyond. This model proved successful almost until the end of the nineteenth century.

This introductory chapter describes the “bush league” characteristics of the National Basketball Association's (NBA) early days. While basketball was quite popular in the 1940s, and college basketball had shown promise as a spectator attraction, professional basketball still had an air of disrepute: barnstorming, uncouth players, and poorly lit (and often poorly ventilated) gyms or dance halls. The Basketball Association of America (BAA), the NBA's precursor, had struggled to gain credibility and popularity among the country's sports fans during this time. The BAA/NBA during its early seasons relied on exhibition games featuring the Harlem Globetrotters, on playing doubleheaders, on using territorial draft picks of stars from local colleges, on playing regular-season games out of town, and on having teams fold mid-season. Some teams continued to play league games in high school gymnasiums well into the 1950s.

Since the start of the nineteenth century, the processes of urban development and the development of modern sport have been dialectically linked. With critical masses of potential participants, spectators, and media, the city provided the necessary ingredients for the development of sport as a structured activity and viable enterprise. With concerns over the social and public health impacts of rapid urbanization, sport helped to shape urban growth through the development of major metropolitan parks; the creation of small parks, playgrounds, and gymnasiums; the provision of resources for recreation; and the placement of facilities for spectator sports. To better understand the dialectical relationship between sport and urbanization, this chapter focuses on two time periods: 1800–1870 and 1870–1940. The period between 1800–1870 was a time of rapid change with both cities and sport developing into their modern forms. The period between 1870–1940 evinces a more instrumental relationship between sport and the city.

Das Fach Sport ist auch nach den aktuellen Vereinbarungen der Kultusministerkonferenz eines der wenigen Fächer, die vom ersten Schuljahr an bis zum Ende der gymnasialen Oberstufe in der Stundentafel als Pflichtfach verankert sind. Zugleich ist Sport jedoch das einzige Fach, das in vielen Bundesländern nur unter besonderen Bedingungen Abiturfach sein kann. Kann Sport als "praktisches Fach" so unterrichtet werden, dass in einer Abiturprüfung Leistungen erreicht werden, die dem wissenschaftspropädeutischen Anspruch der gymnasialen Oberstufe genügen? Das war die Frage eines Schulversuchs ("Erprobungsvorhaben"), der von 1999 bis 2008 zunächst an 24, dann an 54 Gymnasien und Gesamtschulen in Nordrhein-Westfalen durchgeführt wurde und dessen Ergebnisse nicht nur für das Bundesland NRW von Bedeutung sein dürften. Der Schulversuch wurde von einem sportpädagogisch interessierten Forschungsverbund der Universität Bielefeld und der Deutschen Sporthochschule Köln begleitet. Nach zehn Jahren wissenschaftlicher Begleitung dokumentiert dieses Buch die politische und fachliche Auseinandersetzung um Konzeption und Status des Faches Sport in der Oberstufe im größten Bundesland. Methodik und ausgewählte Ergebnisse der Begleitforschung werden dargestellt und in fachdidaktischem Interesse diskutiert. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Frage nach der Verknüpfung von "Praxis" (Können) und "Theorie" (Wissen). Das Buch erschließt damit ein Beispiel anwendungsorientierter Schulforschung, die sowohl der didaktischen Begründung des Faches als auch seiner Qualitätsentwicklung dienen möchte.
