At the root of all living beings is our breath -- without it, we are not alive. Eastern practices such as yoga and meditation are conveyed through the awareness of our breath and the encouragement to be present in what our physical bodies are telling us. This awareness is a huge influence in architectural design. Building well and thinking well are in turn living well, and this architectural thesis served as a journey in discovering how human health can manifest itself in a physical building. The architectural project is an Institute for Being and is located in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, DC. The program of this project consists of spaces to encourage people to seek their own path in spiritual grounding within the otherwise hectic urban context.

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation examines the interdenominational pursuits of the American Presbyterian Church from 1758 to 1801 in order to demonstrate how the Church helped to foster both national and sectional spirit. I have utilized a variety of sources including: the published and unpublished work of both the Synod of New York and Philadelphia and the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States, as well as published and unpublished Presbyterian sermons, lectures, hymnals, poetry and letters. With these sources I argue that a self-imposed interdenominational transformation began in the American Presbyterian Church upon its reunion in 1758 and that this process was altered by the Churchs experience during the American Revolution. The resulting interdenominational goals had both spiritual and national objectives. As the leaders in the Presbyterian Church strove for unity in Christ and Country, I contend that they created fissures in the Church that would one day divide it as well as further the sectional rift that would lead to the Civil War.

This dissertation builds upon stress and burnout research on school leaders by exploring the beliefs and practices regarding well-being and self-renewal of principals identified as successful. This study utilized a 3-fold framework that consisted of mind, body, and spirit, falling under the all-encompassing umbrella of thriving, asserting the three domains work together to support the optimal well-being of the leader. The research questions were as follows: (1) In what ways are principals' well-being and self-renewal supported by principals' personal beliefs and practices, district policies and practices, and educational programs and organizations? (2) To what extent does attentiveness to well-being and practices of self-renewal impact professional success and work satisfaction, and well-being and flourishing? This study included a diverse group of six principals, all identified as successful and all with three or more years of experience as administrators. The case study consisted of mostly interviews with some survey inquiry. The primary method of analysis was holistic descriptive and in vivo coding with loose applications of formal protocols provided by Saldaña (2009). In my final analysis the participant responses were organized into categories and layered into my pre-existing framework of mind, body, and spirit. The findings from the study revealed the current successes and challenges in the personal and professional renewal of principals. The findings yielded implications for research and practice specific to principals, school districts, and principal preparation programs.

The hypotheses of the current study are that (1) black women will be more spiritual and (2) will have more knowledge of the Holy Spirit than white women, and (3) spirituality will be negatively correlated with eating disorder symptomatology and body dissatisfaction. (4) African American women will have lower body dissatisfaction and (5) less eating disorder symptomatology than Caucasian women. It is predicted that (6) ethnicity will have more influence on eating disorder symptomatology and spirituality than current and ideal weight. (7) Current weight will have more influence on body dissatisfaction than ethnicity or ideal weight. Finally, (8) the ideal weight of black women will be higher than that of white women. Participants included 95 African American and Caucasian female college students. All the hypotheses were supported. Prospective research can discern whether racial differences in spirituality have causal influence on healthier body image held by many black women.

This dissertation considers the characteristics of a sacred feminine perspective toward death and dying in today’s United States. A sacred feminine perspective as brought to the deathbed by women healers respects the sanctity of life; intuitively adopts a holistic perspective; and witnesses, not observes, the dying through active engagement on physical, psychological, and spiritual levels. A sacred feminine perspective affirms the dying person’s journey as one of self-acceptance and release. To explore this perspective’s healing power, I pose the following question: How can end-of-life caregiving and religious perspectives on dying be integrated toward a spiritual feminist perspective to create a new paradigm of care for the dying person?

To answer this inquiry, I explored from a phenomenological perspective the stories from end-of-life caregivers, primarily in the United States, as well as literature from other healing modalities to develop a framework that may be used by those assisting the dying. The methodologies I utilized for this study are women’s spiritual ways of knowing, including spiritual feminist hermeneutics. In my research, I applied narrative analysis—integrating organic and intuitive inquiry methods—to relevant literature, including stories from end-of-life caregivers about the types of care used in their work, as well as their interpretations of the dying persons’ experiences. This methodological integration allowed me to achieve a more nuanced understanding of the human experience of dying, and to develop and enhance skillful means for the sacred work of midwifing death.

In this theoretical study, I propose a model called the Body-Soul-Spirit Positionality Paradigm, which holds that each person lives as well as dies primarily through one of three dimensions of self: the body, the soul (defined here as feelings and thoughts), or the spirit. A major objective of this dissertation is the development and illustration of the Body-Soul-Spirit Positionality Paradigm as a practical/theoretical framework for addressing the specific physical, emotional/mental, and spiritual needs of the dying person to help them truly rest in peace.

By understanding the dying person’s positionality, the end-of-life doula will be able to provide personalized access to effective healing modalities such as the implementation of positionality blessing cards.

This project investigates the practice of conducting from the conductor's perspective, informed by the author's professional practice over more than three decades. It considers the nature of conducting as professional practice through the long-held philosophical construct of a triumvirate of forces underpinning human endeavour: mind, body and spirit. The project considers these terms, and then applies this understanding to a series of professional practice contexts: a master class with conductors; a summer school involving conducting students; and a reflexive investigation of conducting practice. The aims of this research are to ascertain the effectiveness of an individual's conducting practice, and to examine what effect a conductor could have on the audience and how they received the composer's initial intent. The research does so in a discursive mode, via a series of questions that link the perception of indivisible mind, body and spirit, ultimately proposing an understanding of how these elements can be a measure of the complete conductor. The application of this concept to the conductor imposes concepts of knowledge beyond music score, physical skills beyond time beating and instrumental application, and psychology that reaches into the minds of the conductor, and the musicians, as well as into the receptors of the audience.

This study examines dance and dance-like sacred performance in four texts by or about the thirteenth-century beguines Elisabeth of Spalbeek, Hadewijch, Mechthild of Magdeburg, and Agnes Blannbekin. These women wrote about dance as a visionary experience of the joys of heaven or the relationship between God and the soul, and they also created physical performances of faith that, while not called dance by medieval authors, seem remarkably dance-like to a modern eye. The existence of these dance-like sacred performances calls into question the commonly-held belief that most medieval Christians denied their bodies in favor of their souls and considered dancing sinful. In contrast to official church prohibitions of dance I present an alternative viewpoint, that of religious Christian women who physically performed their faith. The research questions this study addresses include the following: what meanings did the concept of dance have for medieval Christians; how did both actual physical dances and the concept of dance relate to sacred performance; and which aspects of certain medieval dances and performances made them sacred to those who performed and those who observed? In a historical interplay of text and context, I thematically analyze four beguine texts and situate them within the larger tapestry of medieval dance and sacred performance. This study suggests that medieval Christian concepts of dance, sacred performance, the soul, and the body were complex and fluid; that medieval sacred performance was as much a matter of a correct inner, emotional and spiritual state as it was of appropriate outward, physical actions; and that sacred performance was a powerful, important force in medieval Europe that various Christians used to support their own beliefs or to contest the beliefs and practices of others.

Multiple studies on the topic of intergenerational transmission of trauma (IGTT) have been carried out internationally in various contexts; however little is known about IGTT in the context of the Idi Amin regime in Uganda. The present study explored the outcomes and mechanisms via which the trauma of one generation who lived through Idi Amin’s regime impacted the subsequent generation. Using an Interpretative Phenomenological Approach (IPA), this study investigated the subjective experiences, beliefs and perceptions of six Ugandans now based in the UK, whose parents lived in Uganda under Idi Amin’s military rule. Five superordinate themes were identified: 1. “Family dynamics” which described the family system as the place in which the parents’ trauma was seeded and the effects of their trauma were experienced; “Absence and loss” which highlighted the traumatic events and negative outcomes of the trauma such as psychological absence and death; “Sense making as a process” which included participants’ more positive interpretations of their experiences such as making meaning through suffering and gaining strength from their difficulties; “The dynamic nature of memories and remembering” highlighted dynamic interaction of the participants with the narrative of their traumatic experiences and ability to reframe them; and “The individuation process” which explored the impact that the participants experiences had on their adult life. The findings are discussed in terms of the existing theories on IGTT and implications for practice are explored, including a recommendation for a multilevel framework considering the family and community-societal levels, and a holistic approach to trauma treatment which integrates the mind, body and spirit.

This dissertation investigates extant literature on the contributions of spirituality within music education from perspectives of philosophical writers in the field. It introduces Integral Theory, which features a five element heuristic: a) four quadrants of human experience, specifically, subjective, objective, individual, and collective perspectives; b) levels (or stages) of human development; c) lines of human development; d) states of consciousness; and e) types or styles of being and acting in the world. Finally, this dissertation applies Integral Theory's multi-perspective approach to the dynamic elements that engage body, mind, and spirit as teacher and learner perform, listen to, compose, and improvise music. I use Integral Theory's four quadrants of human experience to summarize, categorize, analyze, and map aspects of presenters' papers and the final round table discussion at the Spirituality Symposium, Spirituality: More than just a concept?, during the International Society of Music Education Conference (ISME), July, 2008, in Bologna, Italy. I use Integral Theory's levels of human development to map Edward Sarath's Levels of Creative Awareness, as he applies it to trans-stylistic jazz improvisation pedagogy. Sarath's melding of jazz music practices, and music theory and analysis with personal and collective non-music influences, transpersonal elements, and meditation mirrors Integral Theory's second element. Results from this philosophical inquiry show that discussions and pedagogy focusing on spirituality in music education include (a) teacher and student levels of proficiency and excellence in music, (b) personal and collective transformation, (c) diverse descriptions and interpretations of transcendence as they pertain to music's effect on persons, (d) understanding self and other especially meaning, value, belief, and moral systems, (e) receiving and dealing with emotions and feelings in professional settings, (f) brain, biological, and physical aspects, (g) personal and collective imagination, creativity, mystery, wonder, intention, attention, awareness, mindfulness, playfulness, authenticity, flow, (h) identified stake-holding cultural collectives, (i) environmental, institutional, educational, religious, and ideological factors, and (j) curriculum and experiential practices and guidelines. A close reading of flow pedagogy in early childhood music teaching shows some similar methodologies.

This thesis examines spirit mediumship in Chaiyaphum, a province in northeast Thailand. It explores the subjectivity, sociality, personhood, and religiosity of Isan people in relation to modern processes of state formation and socio-economic change. Based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork in Chaiyaphum, the thesis maps the rich pantheon and networks of spirit mediums in this province and pays close attention to ritual embodiment, performativity and personhood. Documenting the centrality of mediumship in domains that range from political legitimation to healing, the findings challenge the presumption that this form of vernacular religiosity is archaic, marginal or waning. Supernaturalism is strongly manifest in the lives of the people of contemporary Chaiyaphum and functions as a supple node for assimilating new concepts and symbolizing and negotiating new relationships in society. The thesis analyzes Thailand as a ritual state where people’s life and the state’s affairs are full of ritual practices. Spirit cults crucially contribute to state formation and nationalism. Ritual performances around historical figures that are enacted by the local people reproduce their subjection under the Thai state. Such spirit practices from the margins contain spectral power and maintain the central state’s power and the monarchy’s auratic potency. At the same time they draw the charismatic power of the central state into local circuits of sociality and meaning. In a region considered the powerhouse of state Buddhism, local spirit cults are not subservient to, undermined by, or detached from state Buddhism. They form a mutualistic relationship with Buddhism to serve people’s proximate needs. The thesis documents the intriguing world of medium-abbot, medium-monks, and spirit mediums whose techniques and authority are modeled on Buddhism, introducing the reader to a cast of practitioners whose identities disrupt the presumed hierarchies between Buddhism and mediumship. Spirit mediumship is central to the reproduction of Isan personhood in a dynamic and shifting globalized social landscape. In a region marked by high levels of labor mobility and social fragmentation, spirit mediums serve as the linchpins for recombinant forms of sociality and selfhood built around an idiom of spiritual kinship. Spirit mediumship can be considered as a contemporary vernacular of empowerment. Spirits facilitate the recognition of female desire and the enactment of extra-domestic feminine social projects. Mediumship encompasses heterogeneous forms of desire and sexuality that conflict with conventional modernist identities. As a healing discipline, mediumship illuminates a material theory of the self and comprises a corporeal technology for mending afflicted personhood through ritual enactments. The multisensory and performative aspects of ritual healing shed light on the relevance of spirit mediumship in reconstituting selfhood in a region undergoing turbulent social change.

The goal of the project is to design a non-sectarian meditation center in the dense urban area of New York City. The design challenge is to draw inspiration from an interpretation of ancient philosophies of meditation, without simply importing cultural relics from places in which those philosophies have flourished in the past. More difficult was the decision to apply meditation philosophy not just to the design, but to the process of designing. The functional purpose of the building is somewhat flexible. People who practice meditation mayor may not be involved with an organized religion. The current "Dharma scene" in America is extremely diverse. The purpose of the Center is to facilitate the exploration of the mind and reality that goes on in meditation. It might serve as a meeting place for various groups, and also as a center for the study and debate. Practitioners of different schools might meet to compare notes, or to attend conferences such as the Mind Science seminars held on a semi-annual basis by the Dalai Lama and researchers in the cognitive sciences.

Dance is the language of the soul. Dance, as a theological source, can remind us of who we are in and with the living perichoresis of the Trinity. Dance, as embodied art, can provide us with a new way of viewing and discussing pneumatology and that we too, in our incarnate reality, participate in perichoresis. Within this work I seek to answer the questions of how dance is a source of theology, why a pneumatology of the body is significant, and how dance provides a framework for a pneumatology of the body. The creation of a pneumatology of the body is a rooting or re-membering of the Spirit and our own spirit in incarnational—skin and bones—reality that includes us in Trinitarian perichoresis. Pneumatology of the body is dancing with the Holy Spirit in our given time and space to retrieve the dignity of our embodied inspirited selves as made in the imago Dei. The gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit are not abstract concepts. Through dance as embodied art we can move from abstract, intellectual concepts of the Spirit to incarnational truth of our flesh and blood, wounds and joys, where the Trinity dwells within and around.Dance as a source of theology can provide a framework for a pneumtology of the body. The Holy Spirit as relationality holding all of life together is our Holy Bridge. Within this work, we re-member our foundational belief in the interconnectedness of body and soul, and that we too participate in the Trinitarian perichoresis as part of God’s dancing revelation. In a world of division and duality, the Spirit as Holy Bridge brings us back home to the core of who we are individually and collectively, while dance provides a space for honoring difference and duality together in harmony. Dance gives expression to situations and things in our lives that are challenging to grasp conceptually and intellectually, while allowing for the embodied witnessing of a person’s and community’s story.A dancing theology as a framework for a pneumatology of the body reminds us that Spirit is our Holy Bridge between body, senses, feelings, challenges, and transformations, between my body soul temple and your body soul temple, and between individual and communal. By dancing with us in our daily lives, the Holy Spirit draws us ever deeper across loving bridges into communion with Trinitarian perichoresis. The presence of some ambiguity about the two terms of soul and spirit, which up until now has not been considered, has been investigated in this research. This ambiguity has created problems in different fields of study such as philosophy, psychology and commentaries of religious texts. This is because the two words are usually used synonymously. The main aim of this research is to investigate whether the human being has an independent spirit in addition to the body and the soul or not. In other words it is attempting to establish if man is a tripartite existence made of body, soul and spirit. In order to attain this aim the ideas of various philosophers are discussed on different subjects regarding the soul with particular attention to the philosophical system introduced in the seventeenth century AD by the Muslim philosopher, Sadr al-din Shirazi. This consisted of two other philosophical systems in Islamic philosophy, peripatetic (mashā‟) and illuminative („ishrāq) combined with mystical and religious teachings. His idea about the soul was set as the basis for the arguments regarding the soul and the ideas of other philosophers were compared to it. This research explores the principles that form Sadra‟s beliefs about the soul. One of Sadra‟s principles, the fundamentality of existence, is explained. This principle aims to prove the reality of the external world and the soul as one of these realities. The topics of motion and time and the views of philosophers about these are cited. In addition, another Sadra‟s important principles, trans-substantial motion, is mentioned and explained and it is suggested that the difference between Sadra‟s and other philosophers‟ ideas about the soul lies in accepting or rejecting motion in substance. According to Sadra, the soul which is material at the beginning of its creation moves towards immateriality by trans-substantial motion. Then philosophers‟ ideas about the soul are mentioned as well as their disagreements regarding different issues such as immateriality, motion, origination of the soul etc. In addition, the problem that Sadra‟s philosophical system faces in regard to the soul is discussed in particular since it is the main aim of this research. It is concluded that Sadra‟s idea is more complete than the other ideas regarding the soul. The existence of the soul found a better justification in this idea. The problem of dualism of the soul and body with which other philosophers were faced has been resolved. Meanwhile the problem of this philosophical idea which sees the soul to be the same as the spirit was investigated and it was stated that this problem has caused many diversities of opinion between philosophers in subjects related to the soul. The propounded solution for all the cases was to accept the dichotomy of the soul and spirit. Religious texts have been classified, analysed and used to support this idea and by using different evidences it was confirmed that the soul and the spirit are two independent substances and that the human being is a tripartite existence.

Current US government risk assessment and management regulations and policies are based on a position that views risk as an objective measure of a predictable physiological morbidity or mortality outcome that is not otherwise connected to social or cultural beliefs and values. Whereas human health risk assessments are meant to determine the probability of adverse impacts from particular hazards, the conventional risk assessment framework fails to consider Native American definitions of health and so risk. This study was conducted with the Coast Salish Swinomish Indian Tribal Community of Washington State, where contamination of their aquatic natural resources has been found. By conducting two series of interviews with traditional high-use seafood consumers, experts and elders from the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community, and by averting use of what I describe herein as ‘conventional’ fish consumption survey, the study allowed interviewees to provide a more complex narrative set of details and information that bestowed a much more accurate picture of the reasoning behind seafood consumption habits within the community. Among the more salient points that emerged from the interviews was that seafood represents a symbolic, deeply meaningful food source that is linked to a multi-dimensional ‘Swinomish’ concept of health. Yet drastic changes in access, harvest and consumption have occurred over time, and continue to this day. A health evaluation tool was also devised using simple descriptive scaled rankings to elucidate non-physiological health risks and impacts in relation to contaminated seafood. Findings demonstrate that community cohesion, food security, ceremonial use and knowledge transmission all play primary roles as concerns the Swinomish notions of health, and that these indicators are regarded as equally important when juxtaposed to physical indicators of health. Thus, to eat less seafood—as prescribed by current policy and decision-making procedures when contamination is present—is actually detrimental to the multi-dimensional concept of health as defined by the Swinomish. The evaluation tool may be used in conjunction with the conventional risk assessment framework to more accurately and comprehensively deduce risks and impacts.

In dominant seventeenth-century thinking women's bodies, minds, and spirits were not only inferior to men's, but also more prone to evil. This study explores the ways in which the women writers attempted to redefine these assumptions. Through an analysis organised along various spiritual transformations the writers claim to go through, the study presents an insight into seventeenth-century women's construction and redefinition of femininity. The symbolic process of women's spiritual transfiguration results in them identifying with the metaphorical figure of Zion and in positioning women as godly agents of God, whereas male writers' transformations eventuate in their being effeminized and being turned into 'Crooked Agents' of God. Therefore, the study shows how the potentials inherent in the biblical figure of Zion were used in establishing a connection with God and in forming female and male authorial identity. The thesis draws on the understudied voices of women such as the anonymous Eliza, Elizabeth Major, An Collins or Gertrude More, and is contextualized by male-authored texts, some of them considered as canonical and popular in contemporary literature.

Growing up, I never considered myself an athlete. I did not participate in sports or compete on a track, field or slope. However, as an adult, I have chosen to step outside my comfort zone, exploring challenges that push me physically and mentally to grow as a person. In this way, I found running. Running, for me, is not a mere mundane exercise routine, nor a competitive sport by which to be judged. Instead, running at my own pace has been a physical and emotional journey that eases my mind, nourishes my body and replenishes my spirit. Like an old friend, it is always there, year round, anywhere, anytime, to get me outside, pick me up when I feel blue, keep me company while I make new discoveries and introduce me to new friends. Moreover, my body benefits as my heart gets stronger, my bones denser, my risk for disease decreases, my stress disappears and I burn a ton of calories. Above all, the skills I develop from running, including confidence, perseverance, perspective, resiliency, connection to others, setting goals, the bliss of solitude, taking notice and living in the present, transfer to all areas of my life. In fact, my experience with running has helped me not only be a better person and enjoy life more, it has given me new tools to use professionally, as an academic advisor in higher education. It is my hope that my story, and the supporting research, will inspire others to explore running as an option for physical, emotional, social and, perhaps, spiritual presence in their lives. I share my story to all educators because the inclusion of exercise and mindfulness, for professional and student, can be a source of stress reduction, balance, cognitive focus and overall health. As a result of my own experiences with these activities, I think I understand their benefits and am able to impart the necessary encouragement to students to explore their options. In my opinion, the interesting relationship between writing and running, which I discovered and touched upon in this process, warrants further exploration.

This project is a translation of ideas I have encountered in my journey through Women's Studies. With this interactive book, I offer a concise, understandable, and empowering method for self-discovery from one feminist's perspective. Traditional self-help materials often set the reader up as the one with the issue or problem and they rarely call out the functioning systems of oppression as a stumbling block or offer ways to circumvent them. With this project, I hope to shine light on the functioning systems of gender discrimination, racism, classism, and heterosexism, and to provide a framework for understanding. There are three main theoretical contexts for this project. The first context includes perspectives on language and the ways in which language limits women's communication with themselves and with each other. .The second is gender socialization and how it enforces norms of "appropriate" female behavior. The third context is recent work in feminist spirituality and the possibilities it offers for recovering a spiritual self in direct relationship to a higher being. By narrating my own experiences in these three areas, and by offering resources and tools for further exploration, I hope this thesis will enable readers to understand that it is not they who are sick or in need of "self-help" but the society and culture in which they live.

Esta tese é um estudo sobre a mente, a alma ou o espírito humano para entender o sofrimento. Entre as questões interdependentes estão o corpo, a materialidade e o simbólico. A deficiência é o objeto empírico de reflexão. Apontamos a mente enquanto: razão, em suas operações (filosófica, científica, prática e artística); desejos e sensações. Explicamos que o sofrimento e a felicidade são da ordem da mente. O sofrimento são condicionamentos mentais irracionais, que geram perturbações, ações e consequências equivalentes. São pedidos de inteleção. Descrevemos quatro deles: medo, desejo irracional, orgulho e carência. A felicidade é a ausência de sofrimento, uma mente em paz, obtida através da lapição de si. Explicamos que deficiência não é sofrimento. Detalhamos a razão científica em suas operações para definir o real, seja interno ou externo à mente (identificar indícios, dividir complexidades e fazer hipóteses e constatações). Para tanto, utilizamos comparações entre a medicina medieval e a moderna. Tratamos da materialidade, do corpo, da matéria orgânica viva, que também possui racionalidade. Explicamos o patológico, a anomalia e sua relação com a deficiência. Por fim, detalhamos o simbólico, o âmbito dos conteúdos mentais e seus compartilhamentos. Tratamos da distinção entre natureza e cultura e da criação do real. Mostramos operações do sofrimento na interação. Abordamos a explicação social da deficiência. Descrevemos conformações histórico-sociológicas que associam deficiência a: sofrimento e compaixão, abordando as Santas Casas de Misericórdia e escolas católicas para surdos e cegos; doença e anomalia, abordando a medicina moral, a degenerescência, a eugenia, o ensino dos anormais e a reabilitação; construção social, abordando os direitos humanos, o ativismo e a academia. Os principais interlocutores da tese são Descartes, Aristóteles, São Tomás de Aquino, Canguilhem, Lévi-Strauss e Geertz.
This thesis is a study of the mind, the soul or human spirit to understand suffering. Among the related issues are the body, the materiality and the symbolic. Disability is the empirical object for this analysis. We understand the mind as: reason, in its operations (philosophical, scientific, artistic and practical); desires and sensations. We explain that suffering and happiness are in the order of the mind. The suffering are irrational mental conditionings, which generate disturbances, actions and similar consequences. They are requests for intellection. We describe: fear, irrational desire, pride and shame. We explain that disability is not suffering. We detail the scientific reason in its operations to set the real, whether internal or external to the mind (to identify trace elements, to part complexities and to make hypotheses and conclusions). Therefore, we use comparisons between medieval and modern medicine. We reflect upon the materiality, the body, the living organic matter, which also has rationality. We explain the pathological, the anomaly and its relation to disability. Finally, we detail the symbolic, the scope of mental contents and their shares. We deal with the distinction between nature and culture and the creation of reality. We show the suffering operations in the interaction. We analyse the social explanation of disability. We describe historical-sociological conformations that link disability to: suffering and compassion, addressing the catholic brotherhoods for charity and schools for the deaf and blind; disease and anomaly, addressing the moral medicine, degeneracy, eugenics, the teaching of abnormal and rehabilitation; social construction, addressing human rights, activism and academic. Our main theoretical support are Descartes, Aristotle, St. Thomas Aquinas, Canguilhem, Lévi-Strauss and Geertz.

In the last two decades, Seventh-day Adventist scholars have been attempting to articulate a balanced and distinct ecclesiology, aimed at helping the denomination to retain its global unity, maintain its relevance and enable a more fruitful and meaningful interaction with others. No comprehensive account of the church has been developed yet, however. This thesis is intended to facilitate a more rounded and systematically articulated concept of church from an Adventist perspective. Part I presents a thumbnail history of the denomination and considers the advantages and limitations of its standard claim to be the 'remnant', awaiting a pre-millennial parousia. Part II engages with the ideas of some of the ablest communio ecclesiologists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and considers their ecclesiological system, built around the concept of koinonia, while Part III examines ways in which their theoretical framework can assist the Adventist community to deal with practical ecclesial issues. Four major proposals are made for deepening Adventist understanding of the nature of church. Whereas the formal structure of communio framework can help Adventists move beyond one-sided, single-metaphor communal self-descriptions, the idea of the church as essentially a koinonia of believers in God can supplement their predominantly functionalist portrayal of the church as herald or messenger. Thirdly, the Adventist notion of truth can be enriched by viewing the community of believers not only as a messenger, but also as an organic part of divine revelation. This makes ecclesiology central to the theological enterprise, intrinsic to the grounding of theological claims and the interpretation of biblical texts. Finally, the development of a richer interpretation of the Spirit's activity in the church is seen as one of the key prerequisites for a fuller, more nuanced account of the church's participation in the life of the triune God. The highlighting of these four aspects, hitherto neglected or underdeveloped in Adventism, and the presentation of tentative solutions to its ongoing ecclesiological problems, form the principal contribution of this monograph.

Within many communities and religions, including the LDS community, there is some controversy surrounding the use of stem cells – particularly embryonic stem cells (ESC). Much of this controversy arises from confusion and misconceptions about what stem cells actually are, where they come from , and when life begins. The theology of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has interesting implications for the last of these considerations, and it becomes less a question of “when does life begin” and more an exploration of “when does personhood begin” or “when does the spirit enter the body.” With no official Church stance, statements from Church leaders vary on this topic, and this first section of the thesis explores the philosophical and practical meaning of personhood with a biological background intended for those not familiar with the origin or uses of stem cells.The second portion of the thesis explores possible cloning technologies. Recent events and advances address the possibility of cloning endangered and extinct species. The ethics of these types of cloning have considerations uniquely different from the type of cloning commonly practiced. Cloning of cheetahs (and other endangered or vulnerable species) may be ethically appropriate, given certain constraints. However, the ethics of cloning extinct species varies; for example, cloning mammoths and Neanderthals is more ethically problematic than conservation cloning, and requires more attention. Cloning Neanderthals in particular is likely unethical and such a project should not be undertaken. It is important to discuss and plan for the constraints necessary to mitigate the harms of conservation and extinct cloning, and it is imperative that scientific and public discourse enlighten and guide actions in the sphere of cloning.

La douleur chronique est l’un des problèmes les plus complexes auxquels sont confrontées la médecine et les neurosciences. Au fil des siècles, il a été un casse-tête et reste encore un défi pour la recherche étant donné la complexité de sa nature. Parmi la quantité considérable de douleurs chroniques existantes, la douleur du membre fantôme est l’une de plus difficiles à traiter. Les études récentes montrent que les changements corticaux majeurs qui apparaissent après une amputation sont la conséquence de la douleur chronique fantôme. Je soutiens que la cause principale de la douleur fantôme est la non-acceptation de la perte d’une partie du corps, autrement dit, que la douleur mentale provoquée par la transformation de l’image de soi devient une douleur chronique physique, et que c’est l’esprit qui contrôle les réseaux cérébraux : bien qu’il émerge du cerveau, l’esprit arrive à le modifier du fait d’influences exogènes. L’analyse des études que j’ai réalisée pour tester mon hypothèse, m’a permis de constater que la perception douloureuse dépend de diverses influences externes qui sont indépendantes de l'entrée (signal) nociceptive. Je conclus que la plasticité corticale mise en évidence lors de l'expérience douloureuse chronique ne dépend pas seulement de l'action et de l'interaction entre les réseaux neuronaux dynamiques, mais aussi de la communication entre ces réseaux neuronaux (système endogène) et les réseaux environnementaux (système exogène), ces derniers étant capables de moduler la perception de la douleur. Je souligne donc l’importance de la reconnaissance du caractère mental de la douleur chronique et le besoin d’analyser sa dimension émotionnelle afin de la moduler
Chronic pain is one of the most complex problems facing medicine and neuroscience. Over the centuries, it has been a puzzle and remains a research challenge given the complexity of its nature. Among the large number of existing different kinds of chronic pain, phantom limb pain is one of the most difficult to treat. Recent studies show that major cortical changes that appear after amputation are the result of chronic phantom limb pain. I argue that the main cause of phantom limb pain is the non-acceptance of the loss of a part of the body, that is to say, that the mental pain caused by the transformation of the self-image becomes a chronic physical pain. It is the mind that controls the cérébral networks : even if it emerges from the brain, the mind manages to modify it as a consequence of external influences. The analysis of the studies I performed to test my hypothesis, allowed me to confirm that the perception of pain depends on various external influences that are independent of the nociceptive signals. I conclude that the cortical plasticity highlighted during chronic painful experience does not only depend on the action and interaction between dynamic neural networks, but also on the communication between these neural networks (endogenous system) and environmental networks (exogenous system). These latter networks are capable of modulating the perception of pain. I therefore emphasize the importance of recognizing the mental nature of chronic pain and the need to analyze the emotional dimensions which modulate it

Este trabajo aborda la propuesta filosófica de Eugenio Trías, la filosofía del límite, desde lo que parece ser una piedra desechada por la misma: el cuerpo. Es este concepto el que nos sirve de cuña para entrar en temas como la singularidad, la noción de símbolo en su relación con la producción filosófica y la muerte. Se trata de un diálogo entre problemas clásicos que se derivan de la consideración del cuerpo y la propuesta del filósofo barcelonés. Dicha operación nos permite abrir nuevos horizontes indagando en las fuentes de las que bebe la filosofía del límite y que no siempre resultan evidentes. El cuerpo bien podría ser la sombra que proyecta un límite que se pretendía fuera pura luminosidad.
In this lines we explore the philosophy of limit taking the concept of body as the perfect wedge to highlight some points left in shadows. As a matter of fact, the concept of body seems to be a discarded stone in the construction of the limit citadel. Therefore, this work attempts to put the “limits of limit” into a prove in order to have a global vision of the original ideas of Eugenio Trías. The journey leads us into a dialogue with some of the most important sources of the philosophy of limit and put us face to face with classic problems as singularity, the specificity of philosophy and one of the most important concepts of the last century: death. Maybe with the concept of body we do find the shadow of the limit that intended to be pure light.

How can we live and work with craft as people in an age of global climate crisis? What must we change in order to work empathically and in harmony with our surrounding world? While not in need to actively ensure our survival, it is easy for us to forget to stay humble to our own needs, thus taking our lives and our surroundings for granted. We forget our bodies and we forget the bodies of others, animals and objects alike. We forget that we need each other in order to become. This text is a complementary exploration in how awareness of the soul, body and Spirit may help bring back a balance that we've lost in town based cultures of the west. I am looking for balance as I twist fibre into thread and into rope and as I suspend rock- and human bodies into temporary sculptures. I look for inspiration in phenomenologist thought, alchemy, shamanism and daoism, as well as in the active making of craft and art. My work centers around telling stories, crafting and material exploration as well as bodily awareness and performance. In the work, body and material are synonymous concepts drifting in and out of each other, enabling and shaping each other, becoming together. I am looking to meet my surroundings not always on my own terms, but by changing, adapting and compromising myself. This helps bring an awareness that unites me with the bodies around me, placing me not above but amidst constant becomings.

Esta pesquisa teve por objetivo investigar a prática da psicografia ou escrita mediúnica com base em relatos de experiência de médiuns psicógrafos da cidade de Uberaba (MG). Sob a perspectiva da semiótica greimasiana e com base nas contribuições de Jacques Fontanille para o estudo das práticas semióticas, foi possível compreender: a sintagmática do ato mediúnico e da escrita mediúnica; a constituição do actante e do ator-médium nesses relatos de experiência; seus mecanismos enuncivos e enunciativos, responsáveis pelos efeitos de sentido de “verdade”, implicados no estabelecimento do contrato fiduciário; a existência, no córpus, de uma figuratividade “mediúnica” e do além-vida; e, finalmente, as relações entre corpo e transmissão, que nos permitem descrever como a memória de uma prática pode ser constituída e transmitida, enquanto configuração semiótica e cultural. A análise do córpus nos permitiu, assim, reconstruir o percurso da psicografia como prática semiótica, em seus diversos níveis de imanência. Considerando a influência sociocultural e o impacto editorial da escrita psicográfica no contexto brasileiro, bem como a inexistência de estudos linguísticos ou semióticos a esse respeito, acreditamos que o presente estudo tenha auxiliado a preencher uma importante lacuna para a compreensão dessa prática tão polêmica quanto inexplorada, e que atesta a diversidade linguística, linguageira e cultural de uma expressiva parcela de brasileiros.
Cette recherche a eu pour objectif d'étudier la psychographie, c’est-à-dire l’écriture médiumnique, basée sur des récits d’expérience de médiums de la ville d’Uberaba, Minas Gerais, Brésil. Sous la perspective de la sémiotique greimassienne et sur la base des contributions de Jacques Fontanille à l'étude des pratiques sémiotiques, il fut possible de comprendre : la syntagmatique de l'acte médiumnique et de l'écriture médiumnique; la constitution de l'actant et de l'acteur-médium dans les récits d'expérience; les mécanismes énoncifs et énonciatifs responsables des effets de sens de « vérité », impliqués dans la mise en place du contrat fiduciaire dans les récits; l'existence, dans le corpus, d'une figurativité « médiumnique » et de l'«au-delà » ; et, finalement, les relations entre le corps et la transmission, qui nous permettent de décrire comment la mémoire d'une pratique peut être construite et transmise pour assurer son existence en tant que configuration sémiotique et culturelle. L'analyse du corpus nous a permis ainsi de reconstruire le parcours de la psychographie comme pratique sémiotique dans ses différents niveaux d'immanence. En considérant l'influence socioculturelle et l'impact de l’écriture psychographique dans le contexte brésilien, et l'inexistence d'études linguistiques ou sémiotiques à cet égard, nous croyons que cette thèse ait aidé à combler une lacune importante dans la compréhension de cette pratique aussi controversée qu’inexplorée, et qui atteste la diversité linguistique, langagière et culturelle d'une partie représentative des Brésiliens.
This research aimed at investigating the practice of psychography or mediumistic writing based on experience reports of psychographic mediums from the city of Uberaba (MG). From the perspective of the Greimassian Semiotics and based on the contributions of Jacques Fontanille to the study of the semiotic practices, it was possible to understand: the syntagmatics of the mediumistic act and of psychographic writing; the constitution of the actant and actor-medium in these experience reports; its enuncive and enunciative mechanisms responsible for effects of meaning of “truth”, involved in the establishment of the fiduciary contract; the existence of a “mediumistic” and “afterlife” figurativity in the corpus; and, finally, the relationship between body and transmission, which made possible to describe how the memory of a practice can be constituted and transmitted as a semiotic and cultural configuration. The analysis of the corpus allowed us to reconstruct the process of psychography as a semiotic practice in its various planes of immanence. Considering the sociocultural influence and the editorial impact of psychographic writing in the Brazilian context, as well as the lack of linguistic or semiotic studies in this regard, we believe this study has helped fill an important gap in the understanding of this practice, which is so controversial as unexplored and demonstrates the linguistic and cultural diversity of a significant number of Brazilians.

Focusing on a Sufi brotherhood, the tariqa Burhaniyya Disuqiyya Shadhiliyya, which stands in a twice-subaltern position with respect to both official and Reformist Egyptian Islam, my research critically looks into the Sahwa al-Islamiyya (Islamic Revival) from the point of view of an allegedly heterodox and esoteric brotherhood, a point of view which is relatively underrepresented both in the field and in literature. In 1974 the Egyptian national newspaper Al-Ahram, together with the official Sufi newspaper Al- Tasawwuf al-Islami, began an unexpected and long lasting campaign against this theretofore-prosperous Sufi brotherhood, swiftly changing its fortune. The detractors - state employed Islamic scholars, exponents of the Ministry of Religious Endowments and the leader of the National Sufi Council - denounced Burhani practices and beliefs as being backward and superstitious, on the grounds that they were culturally rather than divinely inspired. Following these events, in the nineties the Burhaniyya was charged of heterodoxy and promiscuity, and banned from the National Sufi Council. The Burhani Shaykh (leader) decided to leave Egypt in order to concentrate his efforts on proselytizing converts in Europe, starting from a group of German Gestalt psychotherapists. Informally reaccepted by the Egyptian Sufi Council 2004 under the name of another Shaykh, the Burhani disciples have rearticulated their cosmologies in ‘Modern’ terms, in order to respond to the enduring suspicions towards their beliefs and practices. What does it mean to live a pious life in Egypt for people engaged in a subaltern form of Islam, such as my interlocutors? How do the Burhani followers deal with a public sphere dominated by an unsympathetic Reformist Islam? And how do they experience their faith under these unfavorable conditions, and under the consequent material and social constraints of everyday life?This ethnographic exploration expands on recent anthropological research that has drawn attention to Muslim selves and life-worlds, with the aim of restituting legibility to forms of religious commitment and ethical engagement otherwise incomprehensible through a secular and political vocabulary. However this literature has, to a large extent, investigated groups that rely on Reformist interpretations of the written foundations of Islam, while less work has been done on those movements claiming different Islamic traditions and interpretations. Grounded on a six-years extensive fieldwork among the different branches of the brotherhood in Cairo and in Europe (Rome, Paris and Hamburg), the research contributes to filling this gap. The first part of the dissertation concentrates on the public debates in which the Burhanis have been involved and draws attention to the vocabularies employed by my interlocutors, with the aim of disentangling the plurality of conceptual threads and material trajectories that make up the Burhani discourse on Modern Islam. Structured around the notions of ma‘anaui (spiritual) and maddi (material), this discourse relies on a floating body of cosmological notions which put into dialogue notions belonging to the Sufi mystical tradition, such as zahir (manifest reality) and batin (hidden reality), with liberal and modern conceptions of private and public dimensions of the Self, as well as with psychological notions of embodiment, linked to Gestalt psychology. Through this complex cosmology, the Burhanis vindicate a particular relation between emotions, senses, body and religious meaning, which blurs the boundaries between representations of Modern and Traditional Islam dominant in the contemporary Egyptian public sphere. The second part of the thesis explores how Burhani followers concretely mobilize their ritual practices and beliefs to understand and make sense of their everyday life needs, difficulties and desires. The notions of spiritual (mana‘ui ) and the material (maddi), in fact, are not confined to the ways in which the Burhaniyya discursively maintains its particular form of Islamic tradition, but infuse the ways in which individual followers make moral decisions and express their existential stakes. One chapter describes how some Burhani migrants understand and experience their emotional and physical displacement due to their forced migration, in terms of a jihad al-nafs (spiritual struggle) between the material and the spiritual dimensions of existence. Another chapter draws attention to the uses of music and singing, essential but contested features of Burhani spiritual and ritual engagement, and describe how my interlocutors creatively build a notion of aesthetics, which blurs the sacred/profane dichotomy dominant in contemporary Egyptian public sphere. Yet another chapter explores how young Burhani women negotiate their desires and expectations about love and Modern Islam with the dominant gender discourses and roles in which they are daily entangled. By complementing discourse analysis with a phenomenological exploration of the relation between people and between people and their surroundings, this research pledges for a more existential understanding of religious lives, in the attempt of blurring the dichotomy between the spiritual, the imaginary and the material. The research pursues a genealogy of Burhani cosmologies and practices, which takes into account both the role of public representations and of individual experiences in the shaping of a definite shared Burhani sensibility and cosmology. It therefore repositions religious commitment in relation to national and trans-national trajectories of concepts, as well as in the wider panorama of individual life-worlds, exploring the making of ethical and moral life as a conflictual and ongoing process, involving individual expectations and experiences, material needs, social constraints and public discourses. By focusing on the multiple dimensions of existence, this phenomenological methodology lays value at recognizing the urgency of the social, economic and political conditions that compel and constrain people in their pursuit of winding paths of religious commitment, thus originally contributing to anthropological scholarship on Islam and Muslim subjectivities. On a theoretical level, the research argues for a reassessment of individual creativity, which can be traced in the small, often unreflective albeit continuous, re-workings and variations that my interlocutors bring to the cosmologies and ritual practices they resort to. This analysis of religious life-worlds from the perspective of experiencing subjects highlights the fluidity of religious tradition and questions conventional understandings of Islam as a coherent set of doctrines and rules, which impose on human beings.

Stem cell research offers hope to many people suffering from incurable diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, heart disease and spinal back injuries. However this poses a moral dilemma because embryos are destroyed during embryonic stem cell research. To determine whether embryonic stem cell research is morally justifiable, two views in respect of a human being were considered: i. a human has a dualistic nature in which his body and soul are two separate entities or ii. his body and soul forms a unity which can not be separated. If a human has a dualistic nature, it means that the embryo is not a human, it does not have a soul because the soul is added later to form a human. The implication of this is that it will be morally justifiable to kill an embryo during embryonic stem cell research. However if body and soul forms a unity which can not be separated, the embryo is a human which is already developing into a full grown human with several stages of development. It will thus not be morally justifiable to kill an embryo as this will violate the sixth commandment, i.e. “Thou shalt not kill.” To determine whether a human’s body and soul is an inseparable unity or whether they are two separate entities, the Pauline letters' view on the human being was investigated. The research method employed was to do a comparative literary study to highlight the different aspects of stem cell research and then exegesis was done in respect of body (σoμα / sōma); soul (ψυχὴ / psychē) and spirit (πνεῦμα / pneuma) in the Pauline letters according to the grammatical-historical method. An electronic Bible Concordance was used to determine the texts in which the above concepts appear. A semantic word analysis was also done to analyse these concepts. Then authoritative commentaries were used to check the findings. The analysis indicated that Paul refers to a human as unity in which body and soul can not be separated. The implication of this finding is that embryonic stem cell research should be dismissed because it will result in the destruction of embryos. Humans will thus be killed in violation of the sixth commandment. On the other hand adult stem cell research should be encouraged because it has the potential to cure diseases which has up to now been incurable.

Background: Whole-body Computed Tomography (CT) scan today is considered a crucial imaging technique in the diagnostic work-up of polytrauma patients implicating a potential survival benefit. Apart from prompt identification of life threatening injuries this imaging technique provides an additional benefit by diagnosing incidental non-trauma associated medical diseases. These incidental findings might be also life threatening and warrant urgent therapy. The downside of whole-body CT is a relatively high radiation exposure that might result in an increased life time cancer risk. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency and type of non trauma associated incidental medical findings in relation to patient age and potential clinical relevance. Methods: Between January 1st 2011 and December 15th 2012, a total of 704 trauma patients were referred to our hospital’s emergency room that triggered trauma room alarm according to our trauma mechanism criteria. Of these 534 (75.8%) received a whole-body CT according to our dedicated multiple trauma protocol. Incidental Findings (IF) were assigned in three groups according to their clinical relevance. Category 1: IF with high medical relevance (urgent life threatening conditions, unless treated) needing early investigations and intervention prior to or shortly after hospital discharge. Category 2: IF with intermediate or low medical relevance, warranting further investigations. Category 3: IF without clinical relevance. Results: Overall 231 IFs (43.3%) were identified, 36 (6.7%) patients had IFs with a high clinical relevance, 48 (9.0%) with a moderate or minor clinical relevance and 147 (27.5%) with no clinical relevance. The distribution of incidental findings with high or moderate relevance according to age showed an incidence of 2.6%, 6.6% and 8.8% for patients younger than 40 years, 40 to 60 years and older than 60 years, respectively. Conclusion: Whole-body CT scans of trauma patients demonstrate a high rate of incidental findings. Potentially life-threatening, medical findings were found in approximately every 15th patient, predominantly aged over 40 years and presenting with minor to moderate injuries and an Injury Severity Score (ISS) of 10 or less.

Spinoza évaluera la révolution copernicienne et prônera un naturalisme rationaliste et matérialiste contre la tradition onto-théologique, Aristote et Descartes en étant les deux figures clés, sans parler des théologiens et de la Bible. Spinoza interprète l’erreur du géocentrisme comme signalant deux autres erreurs : le dualisme anthropologique classique qui inféodait le corps à l’âme et l’illusion du libre-arbitre. Par la réhabilitation gnoséologique, psychophysique et socio-affective du corps, il prétend conduire l’homme au salut présent, non eschatologique, le réconciliant avec lui-même et avec le Dieu-Nature. La permanence d’une sensibilité anthropologique hébraïque y est prégnante, ce qui n’annule pas des disparités conceptuelles, métaphysiques, sotériologiques et éthiques entre lui et l’Écriture. Ces disparités pourraient rapprocher Spinoza plus d’Aristote que de Descartes. Le projet spinozien tiendra-t-il ses promesses sans retomber dans les travers du mythique et du mystique ?
Spinoza assesses the Copernican revolution and advocates a rationalist and materialistic naturalismagainst the onto-theological tradition, Aristotle and Descartes as the two main figures thereof,theologians and the Bible not to mention. Spinoza interprets the error of geocentrism as indicating twoother errors: classical anthropological dualism which subjugated the body to the soul and the illusion offree-will. By gnoseological, psychophysical and socio-emotional rehabilitation of the body, he claims tolead man to present salvation, not eschatological, reconciling him with himself and with God as Nature.The permanence of Hebraic anthropological sensibility is pregnant, which does not cancel metaphysical,soteriological and ethical disparities between him and the Bible. These disparities could bring Spinozacloser to Aristotle than to Descartes. Will the spinozian project keep its promises without relapsing intothe traps of the mythical and the mystical ?

A wearable body temperature sensor would allow for early detection of fever or infection, as well as frequent and accurate hassle-free recording. This thesis explores the design of a body-temperature-sensing device inkjet-printed on a flexible substrate. All structures were first modeled by first-principles, theoretical calculations, and then simulated in HFSS. A variety of planar square inductor geometries were studied before selecting an optimal design. The designs were fabricated using multiple techniques and compared to the simulation results. It was determined that inductance must be carefully measured and documented to ensure good functionality. The same is true for parallel-plate and interdigitated capacitors. While inductance remains relatively constant with temperature, the capacitance of the device with a temperature-sensitive dielectric layer will result in a shift in the resonant frequency as environmental or ambient temperature changes. This resonant frequency can be wirelessly detected, with no battery required for the sensing device, from which the temperature can be deduced. From this work, the optimized version of the design comprises of conductive silver in with a temperature-sensitive graphene oxide layer, intended for inkjet-printing on flexible polyimide substrates. Graphene oxide demonstrates a high dielectric permittivity with good sensing capabilities and high accuracy. This work pushes the state-of-the-art in applying these novel materials and techniques to enable flexible body temperature sensors for future biomedical applications.

This thesis focuses on the significance of blood and the perception of the body in both learned and popular culture in order to investigate problems of identity and social exclusion in early modern Europe. Starting from the view of blood as a liminal matter, manifesting fertile, positive aspects in conjunction with dangerous, negative ones, I show how it was believed to attract supernatural forces within the natural world. It could empower or pollute, restore health or waste corporeal and spiritual existence. While this theme has been studied in a medieval religious context and by anthropologists, its relevance during the early modern period has not been explored. I argue that, considering the impact of the Reformation on people’s mentalities, studying the way in which ideas regarding blood and the body changed from late medieval times to the eighteenth century can provide new insights about patterns of social and religious tensions, such as the witch-trials and persecutions. In this regard the thesis engages with anthropological theories, comparing the dialectic between blood and body with that between identity and society, demonstrating that they both spread from the conflict of life with death, leading to the social embodiment or to the rejection of an individual. A comparative approach is also employed to analyze blood symbolism in Protestant and Catholic countries, and to discuss how beliefs were influenced by both cultural similarities and religious differences. Combining historical sources, such as witches’ confessions, with appropriate examples from anthropology I also examine a corpus of popular ideas, which resisted to theological and learned notions or slowly merged with them. Blood had different meanings for different sections of society, embodying both the physical struggle for life and the spiritual value of the Christian soul. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 develop the dualism of the fluid in late medieval and early modern ritual murder accusations against Jews, European witchcraft and supernatural beliefs and in the medical and philosophical knowledge, while chapters 5 and 6 focus on blood themes in Protestant England and in Counter-Reformation Italy. Through the examination of blood in these contexts I hope to demonstrate that contrasting feelings, fears and beliefs related to dangerous or extraordinary individuals, such as Jews, witches, and Catholic saints, but also superhuman beings such as fairies, vampires and werewolves, were rooted in the perception of the body as an unstable substance, that was at the base of ethnic, religious and gender stereotypes.
